98. First We Party, Then We Say Goodbye 99. Final Thanks & Celebration of the Class of 2007 100. Editorial
"Let Your Light Shine" .. In June this year, I had the good fortune to participate in a Study Tour to the United Kingdom. The program provided opportunities to visit UNESCO and the OECD, a range of secondary colleges throughout rural and city areas of the United Kingdom and the Sisters of Charity Heritage Centre in Dublin . The richness of this experience enabled real insights into the characteristics of a great school as well as the recognition that Australian schools already strive to ensure a depth and variety of learning options for all students. I was also made more aware of the importance of parental aspirations in the educational outcomes achieved by their chi ldren . It was most interesting and stimulating to learn of international innovations, initiatives and directions and then return to make them our own within the Catholic Ladies' College Learning Community. It is within this context and the achievements of students, staff and parents that I reflect with gratitude on this year and the many ways our students have flourished and blossomed within their educational journey. Our 2007 College Theme of "Let Your Light Shine" provided encouragement and vision for the many different learning experiences that have emerged throughout this year. It was with real pride and school spirit that 120 students entertained parents and friends to packed houses at the cabaret style Showcase in August this year. The year's House and lnterschool Sporting events have seen an increasing number of students involved in sports at Catholic Ladies' College. The many individual and team achievements were aptly celebrated at our Sports Award Night early in Term Four. A significant number of students have participated in DAV Debating Competition. Congratulations to all involved.
Mrs Margaret McKenna
Our Student Leadership Program has enabled students from Years 7-12 to grow in awareness, capacity and commitment in their respective leadership roles. I would particularly commend the diligent, sensitive and thorough leadership provided by the 2007 College Captain, Rachel Imam and College Vice Capta in, Vanessa Batsanis. Thank you, Rachel and Vanessa, for all that you have been and given to Catholic Ladies' College this year. Social Justice, Community Service and Indigenous Reconciliation have remained as important themes and outreach activities throughout 2007. It is in giving that we truly grow in self-knowledge and understanding. These are important areas of personal growth and development for the young women of this College; I commend them to all within our community. The College Board of Directors, under the leadership of Mr John Mitcham has provided wise, compassionate and visionary governance for the College throughout 2007. The Board, together with the College Leadership Team and Staff strive to provide a learning environment that encompasses the Mission of the Sisters of Charity, celebrates the rich heritage of the College and looks to the future with hope and optimism. As you read this Caritas may you share my pride in the achievements of all our students. Congratulations to the 2007 Student Magazine Committee, who, together with Mrs Lynn Mason, have presented us with this accomplished memory of this year at Catholic Ladies' College. As we anticipate this Christmas with family and friends, May the humility of the shepherds, the perseverance of the wise men, the joy of the angels and the peace of the Christ chi ld be God's gift to all as we celebrate His birth .
Mrs Margaret McKenna - Principal
Sisters of Charit y As I write my message for th is year's Col lege magazine I recall everybody's wonderful hospital ity when all 75 delegates from the Sisters of Charity Education Conference visited CLC in May this year. Each of you was so generous with your time and hospitality not to mention the giftedness you displayed in your work as we visited classrooms, studios and laboratories. Most delegates commented on the wonderful natural setting in which teaching and learning at CLC takes place. CLC Eltham is unique among Sisters of Charity Colleges. For some readers of this message it will be their last College magazine. The end of the year marks the culmination of six years of education under the care of the Sisters of Charity and the beginning of a new chapter in life's journey. Few of the class of 2007 would have been taught by a Sister of Charity. Today the Sisters of Charity have hundreds of women and men who continue our work in education and are deeply committed to it. My personal and sincere thanks go to the Board of Directors, Mrs Margaret McKenna, all Staff of the College and all those who make CLC a learning environment where all can pursue knowledge, aspire to virtue and live life to the full. I strongly encourage all graduates of 2007 to thank and pay tribute to those women and men who have cared for you at Catholic Ladies' College on behalf of all Sisters of Charity and who have encouraged you to love learning and to want to make a difference.
Sr Elizabeth Dodds
Each year at school brings its own challenges and opportunities. Every student who attends CLC is educated in faithfulness to the College motto 'knowledge and virtue' . These are the two goals that every CLC student is challenged to achieve. In possession of 'knowledge and virtue' every young woman can be confident of her own worth. Every student is well placed to be wholly involved in the transformation of society as described in the College Mission Statement. On a personal level how have you demonstrated your commitment to 'knowledge and virtue' this year7 What difference does increasing and maturing 'knowledge and virtue' make to the way you relate to others, care for those less fortunate, respect the environment and bring the love of Christ to the wider ,community? My prayer for each of you is that enriched by 'knowledge and virtue' you will have many opportunities to let your light shine as a woman of faith, integrity, individuality and compassion. The world beyond CLC awaits women of 'knowledge and virtue'. In the words of Mary Aikenhead , Foundress of the Sisters of Charity:" May we never act contrary to justice and truth - and may we ever be guided by charity in all our actions and words.
Sr Elizabeth Dodds rsc - Congregational Leader, Sisters of Charity of Australia

At its heart, education is about discovering who we are and how we are to live. In a Catholic school, we are invited to do this within the context of the Christian story - we understand that each of us is a unique individual created by God in God's own image, endowed with special gifts and called to use these gifts to bring life in whatever time, place and community we find ourselves. This journey of discovery is one full of hope, joy, challenge and commitment. It is not an easy journey but it is one that we undertake together and it is a journey that we begin again with each new day. Each of us has journeyed a long way in 2007. We began with a set of hopes and goals, places to aim for and head towards. There have been obstacles along the way-fear, frustration, distraction, conflict, pride, lack of commitment but these have been managed and often overcome with determination, effort, a positive attitude and the love and support of our family, friends and school community.
Ms Anne Young
We are all in a different place now from where we started . We see thing s differently because we are standing in a different place. We know more about ourselves, who we are and where we are meant to be going and we know more about the people around us and what they need . We have much to be thankful for, much to build on, much to do and much to look forward to.
We have reached the end of this year's journey to find ourselves at the beginning again .. ..a place of hope, joy, challenge and commitment, a place that promises new life. Ms Anne Young - Deputy Principal - Mission & Head of Student Wellbeing 2007 has been a year where the life of the students in the Middle School has been rich and varied. We have all been blessed with abundant opportunities to participate in class and extra curricular programs which cater for all our individual needs. It is therefore rewarding to reflect on our experiences, achievements and even disappointments before moving forward to welcome the next beginning . At CLC we are fortunate to be sharing our school lives with so many unique and inspired students and staff. The range of excellent programs which staff have prepared so carefully is really remarkable. I am continually in awe of the creative expressions of life and the diverse perceptions of our students which are given form in their work and presentations. For example, at the Year 8 level we heard the story of how we live as Melburnians through our City Experience Program while Performing and Visual Arts displays revealed not only the many influences in the lives of our students but also the highly individual ways they choose to express their ideas .
Ms Janet Twigden
We continue to focus on the relationship of wellbeing and learning and teaching as is evident in the close relationships formed in the Year 7 Integrated Studies program, within the deep learning tasks in the Year 9 IBP program and in Pastoral Care and Camp programs across the Middle Years. The Peer Support and Conflict Resolution programs provided valuable opportunities for students to give guided support to each other across the year levels.
I continue to be proud of and happy for students who invest so much of themselves to create outstanding outcomes and who have expressed compassion and consideration for their class mates, teachers and for other groups of people within the community. It is in part because of this that CLC continues to grow in stature and influence as a Sisters of Charity school. Our Middle Years student leaders and teachers who have worked to support them have certainly led the way for us in our cultural development. The Year Level Homeroom teachers and Year Level Coordinators - Mrs Debbie Brock,(Year 7) Ms Simone Cymbalak (Year 8) and Mrs Trish Kirley (Year 9) - are to be thanked for their care, generosity and dedication to their year levels and to the Middle Years Team . As 2007 draws to a close I would like to congratulate all students on their efforts and to thank you for all you have shared within the community that is CLC. Ms Janet Twigden - Middle Years Coordinator
2007 has been an exciting year for the senior students. The Year 10, 11 and 12 students have been involved in many social cultural and sporting activities, sharing their talents with not only their peers but also the wider community. Debating, Toastmasters and the Gala Evening are just some of the highlights of a very successful 2007 . Perhaps one of the most significant social events for each year level was the Formal at Years 12 and 11 and the Social at Year 10. These events were enjoyable and most successful due to the hard work of the student organisers at each level and their respective Team Leaders, Ms Annette Keogh (Year 12), Mr Jeff Hobbs (Year 11) and Mr Frank Salmic (Year 10). The senior students showed their sense of community and respect for others in their very positive and mature involvement in their Reflection Days for the Year 11 s, the Year 12 Retreat and Community Service for the Year 1Os.
Mrs Christina Pascalis
Over the year I worked with a wonderful group of students who made up the 2007 Student Representative Council. Under the inspiring leadership of Rachael Imam and Vanessa Batsa.nis, the students organised fundraising and awareness building activities for the whole school. In Term 1 the SRC focused on fundraising, working with each year level to organise different activities to raise money for Caritas Australia. Term 2 saw the organisation of Crazy Stockings Day to raise money for medical stockings for the Royal District Nursing Service. The SRC representatives held a fashion parade for the funkiest stockings and at the same time made sure that each year level understood the reason for the day - to support organisations which work with those in need.
Continuing the work begun in 2006 on raising awareness of our environment, the SRC organised the 2007 Environment Week. This began with a presentation at an assembly and finished with "Clean Up CLC Day" with Captain Planet being the symbol for the event. The student leaders put in a lot of work for the event and certainly encouraged the rest of the school to have a greater understanding of the need to protect and respect the beautiful surroundings we have at CLC. To finish off the year the SRC organised Footy Day which was a great success and enjoyed by all. Over the year student leaders were able to attend many different forums on leadership to help them develop their skills in leading and supporting others. The success of all activities over the year must be attributed to the very supportive Year Level Team Leaders and all the Homeroom Teachers of Years 10, 11 and 12. The commitment they have shown to their students enabled a smooth running of each year level and allowed for each student to feel a part of the community of CLC. I would like to thank the Senior Teams for their willingness to be involved in all activities and their consistent support over the year.
Mrs Christina Pascalis - Senior Years Coordinator
As the academic side of 2007 draws to a close for myself and my fellow Year 12s, one can't help but look back with satisfaction for what we have achieved and a cheeky grin for the fun we've had achieving it. For us, 2007 has been a combination of homework, SACs, mid-years, homework, 18th birthdays and 18th birthday parties, folios, deadlines, homework, formals, late-nights, early mornings, homework, toasted sandwiches, coffee, coke and other caffeine filled products and, of course, homework. No year is without its challenges, but we're a lively bunch and in the close quarters of Currajeen we have become like a big, crazy, teenage family. Thank-you to my year level of champions, I couldn't have done any of this without you. In particular I would like to show my appreciation to my partner in crime, my rock, my saviour Vice Captain Vanessa Batsanis. Your friendship and support has made a challenging year possible to conquer and an initially overwhelming role something that I have thoroughly enjoyed. Your ability to change a situation from stressful to humorous is truly a gift and one that helped me more often than I can count. I only hope I have been able to support you to the same extent that you have supported me, thankyou. Many thanks go out to this years SRC. ·it's been a pleasure to work with you all and your efforts and onginal ideas are greatly appreciated. Good luck to you all in the yeais to come, the school is most definitely in safe hands. Special mention must go to the Senior SRC dream team of Lauren, Meg, Tash, Laura and Danielle; you are amazing. In addition to my new assortment of nicknames (el capitano, the cap, capi and for those who were slightly more daring, 0 Captain my Captain) my role at CLC this year has allowed me to look at my schooling from a slightly different perspective. My backstage pass has enlightened me to how much work really goes into running our school and, as a result, my appreciation and respect for those who help to do that has increased substantially.
College Captain - Rachael Imam and Vice Captain - Vanessa Batsanis
I am eternally gratefully to Mrs Pascalis for her enthusiasm, ideas, support and endless words of wisdom that I have been lucky enough to receive this year. In your first year of being VCE Coordinator you have been handed quite a juggling act, one that you pulled off marvelously and with tremendous aplomb. Ms Keogh, between collecting permission forms, organizing formals and graduations, teaching classes, running year level assemblies and watching over Year 12 you still managed a smile and a good morning every day of the school week, and for all of the above I must thank you. Many thanks to both Miss Young and Mrs McKenna for assisting Vanessa and myself in our roles. Your help enabled us to put our ideas and the ideas of the SRC into practice, developing skills that will continue to benefit us once we have entered the professional world. Thanks also to the multitalented ladies in the Office whose message giving and teacher locating skills averted disaster on a regular basis. Finally to my teachers, thankyou for everything. CLC, I bid you farewell. That big, scary world is calling me and after six years I feel that I am now ready to face it. My best wishes to each of you for 2008 and congratulations to your new College Captain and Vice Captain Sarah Jupp and Briallen Curtis the role is what you make it so be sure to make it your own. Stay happy CLC, stay safe, stand up for what you believe, don't forget to laugh and never, ever underestimate the power of chocolate. Peace and IOYe,

Year 8
The theme for Year Eight 2007 is "Respect for Myself, Others and the Environment". Our students have been challenged and have had the opportunity to try new things and learn from a variety of experiences. I too have had the opportunity to learn and grow with them. The Year Eight girls of 2007 have embraced many of the challenges set before them and worked hard to give of their best in all aspects of our t~eme We raised considerable funds for Advocacy Relief Transformation Empowerment as a year level. I would like to thank all the girls for the generosity in the way of cakes and goodies for the many raffles and cake stall s we had as well as the commitment that was made to such a worthy cause. We were able to raise enough monies for a Community School. I would like to thank the Year Eight Team for their support and dedication to our girls: Chris Haller, Laura Farchione, Tania McGuire, Susan Maher and Debbie Willoughby. As a team we have been able to provide our girls with an opportunity to explore a variety of curriculum areas, to join in the adventures of the City Experience Program and to take up the many challenges of cross country skiing. The Year Eight "Spooky" dinner was a great opportunity to share a meal and have some fun as an entire year level. This year we have been well represented in many areas of the College programs. Girls have been involved in Sport, The College Performance Gala, Fiddler on the Roof, Tournament of Minds, Social Justice Group and many other activities that have been offered. Thank you to all the girls who gave up their time and energy for our college programs. This year has been an exciting adventure for all of us. I must thank the wonderful homeroom representatives I have had the privilege of working with this year - Stephanie Fithall, Caty Grierer, Georgia Betts, Lauren Sandars and Scout Rodrigo. Thank you sincerely for embracing your role and working together to provide some great activities for the year eight group. Founders Day will certa inly go down as a wonderful memory for 2007 . I wish all of you great success and encourage you to continue to pursue leadership roles in the future . I enco urage all the girls to enjoy and participate in all the adventures 2008 has to offer. Thank you again for sharing so much of yourselves with all your teachers and peers this year and all the best for the future . Swimming carnival
2007 has seen yet another exciting and successful year in sport at CLC, especially with the introduction of the aerobics team to add to the various list of sporting teams we already have to offer. The range of sports we compete in here at CLC caters for many enthusiastic girls and includes indoor cricket, netball, volleyball, tennis, soccer, basketball, hockey, badminton, cross country, football, indoor soccer, netball and softball. To add to the sports we participate in, there are two annual major housesporting carnivals in swimming and athletics. These provide all girls with the chance to show off their talents and represent their house in what proves to be a fun day of competition, cheering and of course dressing up. Our Annual House Swimming Carnival kicked off a big year in sport, with a 'pirate' theme. The girls filled the stand of the new and improved pool at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre in their costumes and house colours, set for a big day of excitement, cheering and support for their fellow house members. By day's end the carnival had proved a big success for all who participated. Congratulations to Vincentia, the overall winner on the day. The fun and house spirit did not stop there, however, as the girls prepared for another big day - The Athletics Carnival. This year's theme, the 80's, saw girls go back in time, dressing up in all sorts of styles. The day once again had the girls cheering loudly in hopes of winning the House Spirit Cup, breaking records and winning points for their house. Congratulations to Loyola, the overall winner on the day. Here, at Catholic Ladies' College, the sporting facilities and opportunities are endless. We are honoured to have had the chance over the past six years to be a part of the sports on offer and it has been a great experience. We encourage all girls to get involved and participate as much as possible; that includes coming down to the gym at lunchtime, getting involved in the lunchtime sports or trying out for one of the many sports here at CLC. We are both extremely proud and honoured to have been Sports Captains for 2007. Sports at CLC have played a big part in our six years here and the memories will stay with us for years to come. A big thank you to all the PE staff for your dedication, enthusiasm, hard work and endless support towards us and sporting life here at CLC. We could not have done it without you. Finally we would like to wish Emma Lydiate and Sarah Collins, the Sports Captains for 2008, the best of luck. We are sure you will take on the role with pride and continue to encourage participation in sporting life here at CLC. Amy Petropulous and Emma Glynn Sports Captain and Sports Vice-Captain

2007 Athletics Carnival The 2007 House Athletics Carnival was a huge success. CLC girls were enthusiastic in dressing up in their House colours and extremely supportive of the girls competing.
Whether it be sprinting down the track, launching a discus into the air or raking the long jump pit, all of the students were involved. Each and every girl who attended the day should be extremely proud of herself for making the Athletics Carnival one of the liveliest days on the CLC Ealendar·-.

It was a tight finish with Vincentia the overall winner with a total score of 1,237 points. Closely followed behind them in second position was Marita with a score of 1, 136 points, Loyola in third position with 1, 119 points and in fourth place was Aikenhead with a score of 903. In 2007 the Catholic Ladies' College community proved that House Spirit is alive and well through the participation of every member of Aikenhead, Loyola, Marita and Vincentia. The year commenced with 'Pirates of the CLC' invading the MSAC for lnterhouse Swimming. Loyola went home with the treasure and Aikenhead sang up a storm to be awarded with the Spirit Cup.

In April everyone travelled back in time to the 1980s for lnterhouse Athletics, our second House competition for the year. There were lycra leotards and headbands aplenty as House members strutted their stuff and their sporting ability. On a glorious day, Vincentia triumphed . Winter saw the beginning of the Simply Sharing Collection. Food and other items that we often take for granted were collected by House Captains. Over 1500 items were donated by generous members of Aikenhead, Loyola, Vincentia and Marita and distributed between the St Vincent de Paul Society and Sacred Heart Mission in St Kilda . Competition between the four Houses was fierce during the Founder's Day Super Challenge. Dream Teams suitably attired in mad ensembles of green, yellow, blue and red matched wits and physical endurance over four gruelling rounds. With the assistance of their Houses each team made a valiant effort but victory belonged to Loyola for the second year running . Thanks to the efforts of the 24 House Captains, and the participation of enthusiastic House members, 2007 has been another exciting and eventful year for Vincentia, Marita, Loyola and Aikenhead .

ec Reflection on Year 9 As I sit here my thoughts hovering, Memories seep as I believe it. Pictures of Year Nine flood my mind, How do I perceive it? The answer is so effortless, It hits me in such a way. To understan d my Year Nine life, I must travel through a day. The morning greet s me early, I emerge from the deep . My parents roar at me to move, But I just want to sleep. I arrive w ith school to w elcome me, In the chilly, frosty morning. I see Michelle's beaming face, Just as day is dawning . Bolting to the library, There is homework to be done. I know it should be finished, But I forgot in all my fun . Mr Ramsdale's cheerful greeting, I talk books with Mr Scorg ie. Just as I return to homework, Here comes Madison, Shannyn and Georgie. I say goodbye to old fri ends I kn ew, Though I'm sad and there is doubt. A dawning reali sation co mes, I see what year nine is all about. Some days pass us quickly, Others seem long and sa d. But we slowly understand, The outcome is far from bad . Becoming stronger peopl e, When the challenges arise. The time to change presents itse lf, So we consider and comprise. We work hard and persist in life, As we grow and learn. And when we try to understand , We will always gain in return . We thank our fam ily, friends and teachers, For what they have given us and t aught. We become who we truly are, With their love and support. I leave Year Nine with successes, I let go of sadness and fear. Although it is never perfect, It has been one amazing year. Amy Bryans

2007 has been an eventful and exciting year for Performing Arts at CLC right from the beginning of the year when many girls from Years 10 -12 took part in the 2007 Class Clowns competition as a part of the Melbourne Comedy Festival. Congratulations to all the girls who participated and represented the fantastic comedians we have at CLC However, the biggest highlight for Performing Arts this year was undoubtedly the CLC Showcase 2007 . All the girls and staff worked tirelessly to put on a fantastic show which included music from the Year 7 Band and Orchestra and performances by the Drama Club, the Choir and the Dance Troupe. Everyone involved should be incredibly proud of putting on such an entertaining and wellrehearsed show. I feel privileged to have been the Performing Arts Captain for 2007, and to have had the opportunity of working with such wonderful staff. I would like to encourage anyone who was not able to be a part of the Showcase to get involved in Performing Arts in years to come, and wish the 2008 Performing Arts Captain, Rachael Flynn, good luck. I hope that they have as much fun and learn as much as I did. Ashleigh Tucker - Performing Arts Captain 2007

The Paperclips Project at Mt Scopus College
My trip in Central Australia was a life changing experience. The Indigenous Australians are the most genuine people and are happy to share their stories. They informed us about the real truth behind the media. On this trip I learnt not to trust the media unless you have experienced it and have seen it with your own eyes.
Olivia Spitty 9A.
I was lucky enough to be one of the five girls to go on the Indigenous Immersion Experience. It was amazing, but one thing that I noticed was the difference between what the media has portrayed and what it is really like at an Aboriginal school. The media made the schools out to be a place where the kids hated going, always trying to avoid, and the children had sadness and misery on their faces, but it was nothing like that. From the moment that I stepped into the school grounds I felt happy. It was not only an educational place, but also a place for the children to make friends and have a really good day. We each were allocated a buddy and they were so full of excitement that we wanted to come and play with them and learn their language (Pitjantjatjara). We learnt how to say all different body parts, but my favourite was winpinpi, which means lips. They also put on a concert for us; the children were so lively and full of energy the entire day. The whole experience was fantastic. It was the best place and the most rewarding thing I have ever done.
Rebecca Gray, 9A.
After all the new things I've learnt and song lines I have travelled, my eyes have been opened and I now see the world with a whole new perspective. I have learnt so many morals (some I taught myself and others from the Aboriginal story lines), that I am a completely different person. The Aboriginals are such warm, forgiving and trustful people that I only hope some of that rubbed off on me during our stay. Leaving that place- our home, our country and or land, was extremely hard, as I became so attached. Given the chance, I would go on the Immersion Experience again, and again and again. Madeleine Egan, 98
Shannon Donovan 9C.
Learning about the song lines was an eye-opening experience. I knew the Anangu people had their Dreamtime stories, but I didn't realize they actually had big stories of the land, that ran for thousands of kilometres. Two of my favourite song lines were Wati Ngintaka (lizard man) and the seven sisters. The first one, because it was such an intricate tale, and the second, because of the beautifully, meaningful moral of sisterhood, which, although it is thousands of years old, still applies to all women, particularly young girls today. This was something that we took to heart on the experience, as we all looked out for each other and kept each other strong, something that we as a wider community should all do for our sisters.
Amelia O'Dell 98
And what a year it's been! When I look back on 2007 at the Social Justice group, what I always seem to come back to is that wise saying: "Let Your Light Shine". I truly see this in everything that we do at Social Justice and this is particularly highlighted by the number of activities our girls have been involved in. We started with a Clean Up Australia campaign, in which our group got active in our community by picking up rubbish in an Eltham area. Next, we started selling ribbons in the support of disadvantaged and abused women in our local area. The green, white and violet colours of the ribbons were symbolic of the slogan " Give women the vote" and definitely reminded me of the inspiring women of the suffragette movement whose actions were powerful beyond measure. A particular highlight of the Social Justice group this year was definitely the Reconciliation Week celebrations. It was designed to raise awareness of Reconciliation and how far we still have to go in the struggle for equality for our indigenous brothers and sisters. We gave girls the opportunity to cut out an outline of their hand and write a message on these hands about their commitment to reconciliation. We were simply overwhelmed by the response we received, receiving at least 200 hands for our "sea of hands." Overall, it has been a huge year with many activities ranging from selling butterfly badges, selling chocolate and painting banners. I'd like to say a big thank you to all the supportive teachers behind the Social Justice group particularly Mrs Tobin, Ms Maher and Ms Barry; their support has been invaluable. Most of all I would like to thank our beautiful Social Justice girls who have truly inspired me this year and whose energy has kept this group turning. I would like to sign off with one last quote: "We are born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us .. .It is not just in some of us, it is in everyone" Keep on keeping on! Roslyn Hiser

Year 1Cle
'Let Your Light Shine' was the theme for 2007 and our students have lived out this invitation in numerous ways. The move into the senior years of their education and the consequent challenges and opportunities this move presented has enabled many students to display their academic light. The year began with the usual mix of excitement, apprehension and high hopes. One of the highlights of the first day was to see the clear delight of friends catching up after the summer break and exchanging holiday stories. It was also uplifting to see students move into new leadership roles such as house leaders, SRC representatives, magazine representatives, peer support and peer mediation with such enthusiasm and sense of service. The generous welcoming and hosting of exchange students during various times of the year showed our light as a community. The Community Service Program four weeks into Term One was also a most rewarding experience for our Year 10 community. The students were appreciative of the chance to learn about aspects of community based work in our city. They gained a sense of satisfaction in being able to contribute meaningfully in areas and in ways that were often quite testing. The positive way they spoke of their experiences during the Community Service Reflection Day was most impressive. Founder's Day on Thursday July 19 was also a special event. Each Year 1O Homeroom organised a prayer and reflection in recognition of our gratitude and appreciation of the Sisters of Charity past and present. Sister Elizabeth spoke to the students about her life and work and was warmly received by them. After this the classes thoroughly enjoyed the inter class 'challenges' each homeroom had prepared. Other special events that will be remembered and valued by students in Year 1O is the audience with the Dalai Lama at the Vodaphone Arena in June on the theme of 'Open Arms for Peace' {hosted by Rove McManus} and the chance to talk with a Buddhist Monk afterwards. Other Year 1O students had the opportunity to attend a forum hosted by Jason McCartney where they got to hear firsthand about his AFL career and more importantly, his response to his life changing injuries as a result of the Bali bombings. The annual Year 1O Social with Parade, Marcell in and Whitefriars was again a 'hit ' with the students. The students danced and socialised in good spirits. Thanks must go to the class leaders who helped to make the event a success. As I write, the students have just completed their subject selections for 2008. Many students commented on how quickly the year has passed and it impressed the need to make the most of our time on many of them. The next step in the move into VCE is the ordering of the treasured black jumper, a highlight of term and a signal that 2007 is drawing to a close all too quickly. The Year 10 Team wishes the Year 1Os of 2007 God's blessing as they continue their journey in 2008. Mr Frank Salmic - Year 10 Team Leader
Staff Mr Tony Morgan is retiring after 24 years at Catholic Ladies' College during which time he has held a variety of roles including a notable period as Year 12 Co-ordinator. "Papa Smurf" or "Morgy", as he was affectionately known, helped many a Year 12 student cope with the demands of her VC Eyear. He has also been an enthusiastic participant in many extra-curricular aspects of school life such as camps, the Outdoor Education program and, some would argue most memorably, in school musical productions such as Fiddler on the Roof and, more recently, Showcase 2007. However, it is as a passionate teacher of Mathematics that Mr Morgan will be most clearly remembered by generations of CLC students. His love of his subject and his willingness to try new approaches enabled him to generate enthusiasm and interest even in those students who are sometimes difficult to engage in such a challenging subject. For staff he proved an inspiring role model, someone whose professionalism, dedication and sincerity earned the esteem and affection of his col leagues. Mr Morgan's many interests and talents should ensure him a fu lfil ling and interesting retirement. We wish him all the best in the years to come.

Mrs Kaye Flanagan has worked at Catholic Ladies' College since 1990. During that time, not only has she taught Art at all levels, she has also been involved with Pastoral Care, numerous camps, trips to Central Australia and Bali, Peer Support training, Art exhibitions and has made an enormous contribution in her role as the College's Public Relations Officer. Among the myriad of roles Mrs Flanagan has performed, the most prominent has been 'teacher', and she would agree that no other responsibility has been more crucia l or more important to her than that of delivering a quality education to the young women in her care. As an educator, Mrs Flanagan is passionate, thorough, professional and truly inspiring. The members of the facu lty admire her perfect balancing act. She pushes and chal lenges her students to take risks, yet at the same time nurtures, encourages and makes them feel safe, teaching them and learning from them, inspiring and being inspired. We wish Mrs Flanagan a happy retirement and hope she enjoys the time with friends and fam ily as well as pursuing her own creative, cu linary and travel interests.
Mrs Janine Enright has been a staff member at Catholic Ladies' College since 1989. During this time Mrs Enright has provided generations of students with rich, relevant and engaging learning in all fields of Science, most particularly senior Biology. Mrs Enright has held the positions of Science Coordinator, Professional Development Coordinator, Director of Studies and more recently Head of Learning and Teaching . Mrs Enright is a compassionate, visionary educator, who encourages and enables her students to th ink deeply and with perception about all aspects of their learning. In recent years Mrs Enright has lead, advised and mentored students and their parents through the important decisions associated with subject choices in the senior years. Mrs Enright leaves Catholic Ladies' College to take up work as an Educational Consultant. We wish her well in this endeavour and thank her for the many and generous ways that she has contributed to the life of this College.
Mrs Elizabeth Seow was appointed to Catholic Ladies' College in 1995 as the first Teacher Librarian to hold the position of Head of Resource Centre. At this time libraries were moving from being focused mainly on books to becoming technology rich centres enabling access to information from the internet and databases. Her Mrs Seow's main role in those early years was to oversee the transformation of the newly refurbished Resource Centre. Mrs Seow also worked with classes at all levels, helping students to develop critical literacy as well as effective research skills. Through activities such as Book Club, Book Week, book talks and a variety of engaging displays, she encouraged students to read widely and to explore the wonderful fascinating world of literature. Students and staff alike always found Mrs Seow approachable, friendly and helpful. Among staff she is also renowned as an adventu rous traveller as well as someone who embraces new experiences; we wish her the opportunity for many new adventures in her retirement.
Mrs Alex McKay retires after 20 years as Coordinator of Student Services at Catholic Ladies' College. Generations of students have appreciated her kindness, her enthusiasm and her commitment to developing the ta lents and ski lls of each individual girl. As well as providing students with many hours of educational support on an individual basis, Mrs McKay also introduced many innovative and popular programs such as Peer Support, Toastmasters, Tournament of Minds and Future Problem-Solving. Student Services are now centrally located in the CentennialCentenary Building and are thus very accessible to all students; however, regard less of where her office has been, Mrs McKay has always had an open door policy. In fact, it was sometimes difficult to move in her room as five or six different groups worked on their various activities! Mrs McKay has always been admired by staff for the passion she brought to her work and the determination she displayed in achieving the best possible outcomes for every student she came into contact with. Overall, Mrs McKay set a wonderfu l example of involvement in school life with participation in excursions, camps, concerts and many other activities. We wish her all the best for a busy, productive and enjoyable retirement. We say goodbye to Mrs Ilona von Moller at the end of 2007 after 25 years of continuous service at CLC. When she fi rst arrived, the Music Department had just been opened in a new wing at the school. A woman of many ta lents, Mrs von Moller was Head of the Performing Arts for many years and also taug ht History, English and German. Many of her German students will fondly remember her colorful toy parrot Maxi with whom they held conversations in class, as well as Mrs von Moller dressing up in her dirndl during language week. Mrs von Moller has always loved the outdoors and has participated in many of the Outdoor Education camps, including the Year 8 Cross Country Skiing camps and the Central Australia trip with Year 1ls. Mrs von Moller's contribution to the Performing Arts Faculty has been significant and we thank her for the musical talents she has helped foster. A most accomplished violinist herself, Mrs von Moller has conducted School Orchestras, Ensembles and musical groups for school productions and assemblies. She has also organized Performing Arts Festivals, year level musical evenings, Soirees, workshops and excursions all aimed at developing inherent musical talents in the students. We thank her for her contribution to life at the College, the exceptional musical talents that she has shared with students and staff and also her C()llegiality. Mrs Suzanne Tobin temporarily joined Catholic Ladies' College ten years ago to replace a teacher on leave. Her vitality and hard work in this role ensured that she would be invited to rejoin the staff on a permanent basis. Mrs Tobin has taken on a number of roles since then, incl uding the essential but time consuming task of constructing the student booklist! She was appointed Team Leader of Religious Education in 2005; her deep knowledge and love of theology has been evident in the number of curricular innovations she has been involved in at and beyond the College. Mrs Tobin has been instrumental in preparing several liturgical celebrations over the years and leaves behind some tangible reminders of her creativity through her replica of Eltham's Copper Butterfly and the beautiful banners she instigated for Jubilee 2000 and the Centenary. She continued to promote the profile and activities of the Social Justice group at the College and now looks forvvard to having the time to further her involvement in voluntary work. We wish Mrs Tobin well in her endeavours.
Staff News Staff Leaving Miss Amy Quinn joined our staff as a young teacher from the country in the role of Head of Visual Arts and taught Art and Design. Her inspiration and enthusiasm as a senior Design teacher, has inspired many of her students to take up careers in Design, her flair was always evident in the visual presentations produced for assemblies and year level celebrations.
Miss Quinn's involvement in extra curricular programs, such as Outdoor Education camps and school netball, has touched the lives of many students. She also instigated the College's popular Snow Sports program with ski trips and interschool competitions producing the famous "Get on Board" snow videos.
Ms Tammie Kite has been the Drama teacher at Catholic Ladies' College for the past two years, replacing Mrs Julie Boyle who has been on maternity leave. She leaves CLC to take up a position as Drama teacher at St Columba's College. During her time at CLC, Ms Kite introduced many varied concepts and activities in her drama classes including circus performance, puppeteering and acrobatics. Her students thoroughly enjoyed the wide range of drama initiatives and many vibrant performances took place in the drama room. During her short time at CLC, Ms Kite also directed school productions Godspell and Showcase 2007 - and prepared drama presentations for college assemblies. Students participated in all these activities with energy and enthusiasm. We wish Ms Kite every success in the future and thank her for the contribution she has made to the life of Catholic Ladies' College.
Miss Quinn has been a positive, encouraging role model for her students. Over her six and a half years at the College she has inspired them with her integrity and personal approach. In 2008 Miss Quinn leaves us for an overseas trip before returning to Adelaide with her husband. We wish her well for the future.

Mr Nick Dabbs has been Director of Music at Catholic Ladies' College since 2005. As well as being and involved and committed classroom teacher of Music and Literature, Mr Dabbs has been instrumental in the ongoing implementation of the College Music programs. In the past two years, Mr Dabbs has established a new Year 7 Music program. This saw the introduction of the highly successful Year 7 Band which performed for the first time in public at Showcase 2007 . Students from all levels are involved in the College Concert Band which has grown significantly in number under Mr Dabbs' energetic direction. He has also been responsible for the highly successful College Choir which has performed at many venues and concerts.
Mr Dabbs will be greatly missed for his vision and contribution to the growth and success of the College Music program . We wish him every success on his return to Perth in 2008 and thank him for all he has done in his time at CLC.
Frau Andrea Henderson, German teacher and LOTE KLA Team Leader, left us in March 2007 after nearly five years at Catholic Ladies' College. The energy and enthusiasm with which Frau Henderson embraced and promoted language learning at CLC was infectious. As well as introducing a Cultural Heritage Tour to South Australia for Year 9 students of German and an Indonesian Immersion Experience in Darwin for Years 9 and 1O students of Indonesian, she also co-ordinated CLC's hugely successful inaugural Tour of Germany in 2005 . On this trip, students of German in Years 9-12 explored diverse German cities and enjoyed homestay visits with German families. Former students, parents and colleagues will remember Frau Henderson for her love of the German language and culture as well as for her warmth, friendliness and great sense of humour.
Mr David Vandenberg was a teacher at Catholic Ladies' College from 2006 until the middle of 2007. During his time he supported students in the Student Services area and also taught year 9 English. He implemented enrichment activities with students and successfully co-ordinated the Toastmasters program with Marcellin College. He was enthusiastic about his work and was well regarded by students and staff.
Staff Celebrations Congratulations to Miss Amy Quinn who married Mr Peter Fear in Port Fairy on 22 December 2006. We wish them every happiness in the futur&. We offer our best wishes to Mr Wayne Simmonds and his wife Naomi on the arrival of baby Abbey who was born 19 February 2007. Abbey is a little sister for Emma (5) and Matthew (7). We congratulate Sr Elizabeth Costigan rsc who celebrated with family and friends, the Golden Jubilee of her Religious profession on Sunday 5 August 2007.
English English is the only subject that is compulsory throughout a student's secondary school education. The key dimensions of English - reading, writing, speaking and listening - are at the heart of not only the intellectual development but the social and emotional maturation of the individual. English speaks to the whole person and acknowledges the different learning styles of the individual. It also recognises the connection between the classroom and world beyond and fosters creative links between these worlds.
Lies Lies are like a building a wall A wall that isolates It turns around and becomes karma Lies become an addictive habit A habit hard to break It becomes you
In 2007, students have benefited from a number of creative connections, most notably the translation of the printed word to the stage. In May, our Year 12 English students attended a production by the Melbourne Theatre Company of A Man For All Seasons at the Playhouse Theatre. In August, VCE Literature students were delighted by the Royal Shakespeare Company's performance of Th e Seagull at the State Theatre of the Arts Centre.
And takes over your life Nothing will come of it But pain in the end Lies will ruin your life.
Dayle Humphreys 88
Fire Sometimes I am like fire Bright Loud Filled with hurt And so much ain Burning so brightly For all around.
Bonnie Clare Fyffe 88
English Week, this year held in August to coincide with National Book Week, is always a highlight of the Faculty's calendar and theatre performances were a feature of this year's activities. Students were treated to a number of performances by the Complete Works Theatre Company. This lively troupe of actors presented a condensed version of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet to Year 10 and a condensed version of the bard's Macbeth to students in Year 11 . The company congratulated our students on their attentive and appreciative response. Poetry came to life for Year 7 students with the juggling, acrobatics, rap and rhyme antics of the actors. Our students were brimming with questions at the end of the performance. Writing is a skill that many of our girls excel in, and through the auspices of the lnvergowrie Bequest, which aims to promote excellence in girls' education, a number of Year 9 students were invited to participate in a creative writing workshop with novelist Archie Fusillo. Archie is a charismatic presenter who invites students to make those connections between our lives and our writing; our purpose and our audience. Engagement is fundamental to good teaching and English actively supports those key interdisciplinary programs, such as City Experience in Year 8 and the Inquiry Based Programs in Year 9, which strive to make learning self-directed and engaged. Debating is another avenue for giving speaking and listening a public stage, and this year many teams were successful over the season. Teamwork is essential for a Faculty to operate successfully. To implement the new VELS reporting system, to continue to develop our VELS curriculum, and to foster those connections between the classroom and the wider world, a great deal of energy, commitment and creativity is demanded of our teaching team. The support of the College Leadershi p Team, the dedication of our Student Welfare Team, the expertise and assistance of the Resource Centre Staff, all have been vita l in the continuing process of renewal and innovation . Dr Christine Crowle - English KLA Team Leader
This year Debating and Public Speaking has seen over 30 girls in Years 10 and 11 participate in the Debaters' Association of Victoria's competition The girls competed in five rounds against other schools in our region . The girls had many successes, with special congratulations to Mr Scorgie's Year 10 C Grade team who made it into the play-offs. The team, comprising of Kim Blackwood, Ella Clarke-Schwartz, Sinead Flynn, Kate Gilmartin and Felicity Stewart-Short, worked very hard and were undefeated going into the play-offs. Every year, the prestigious Swannie Award is given to the student who has the best personal speaking score across the region for each year level. It is my pleasure to note that Catholic Ladies' College has a Swannie recipient this year: Rachael Mika in Year 11. Rachael is always well prepared for debates; she is a fair and cooperative member of her debating team. She was awarded with the Swannie trophy at an awards ceremony held in October at Melbourne Grammar School.

The girls have also participated in various public speaking competitions held externally throughout the year. Featuring prominently were the Legacy Public Speaking Awards and the AussieSpeak07 competition for students in Years 7-9. The girls are to be commended on the way that they have embraced the debating and public speaking culture of the College. Term Four brought with it an opportunity for the junior levels to get a taste of debating with the new House Debating competition held at Year 7. The girls are to be congratulated on their enthusiasm and dedication to attending the lunchtime debates. The senior students also enjoyed the thrill of the annual CLC/Parade debate, a chance to add a COrT)ic element to debating whilst promoting some healthy competition! My thanks go to all the coaches: Mrs Margaret McKenna, Ms Adelle Barry, Mr Jeff Hobbs, Mr Frank Salmic and Mr Seamus Scorgie. Tournament of the Minds In Term Three thi s year a number of students from Years Seven to Nine participated in th e Tournament of Minds program . A competition whi ch involves choosing a creative challenge to solve and complete. Th ere are three categories and our group chose to complete the Language Literature problem . We worked in our gro up to come up with a suitable solution and then performed it at La Trobe University. However, before all of this could happen, our team spent many hours writing scripts, making and designing costumes, painting props, and rehearsing . Our task was to invent a new genre for Pangea bookshop . We had several in spired ideas but in the end chose our favourite one. and then began writing the script and making costumes. Although coming up with the genre was incredibly hard, eventually we succeeded and then proceeded to perform it. In my opinion we did a fantastic job and I think that all of the members of my team had a fabulous time and will be back next year!

Congratulations to all those Year1 O students who made the commitment to the College's long-running Peer Support program . The girls trained as Peer Support Leaders over two days at the Eltham Community Centre and then worked collaboratively in pairs to lead groups of Year 7 students over a 14 week period . Year 7 students found this support a very valuable component in their transition into the CLC community. Many students expressed that th is helped them to feel that they had made many new friends and assisted them to really become part of the CLC commun ity. I would like to thank all student leaders for their careful session planning and dedicated approach to their groups and al so to the Teacher leaders, Mrs Tina Bosio, Miss Amy Quinn, Frau Tania McGuire, Mrs Alison Pharoah, Miss Diana Randazzo and Mr Tony Morgan for assisting student leaders at their weekly meetings.
Ms Janet Twigden - Middle Years Coordinator
Congratulations to Marcellin student Cristian Rubin and CLC's Chloe Stella who won Best Speech Awards at the final Toastmasters evening .
Adventures from Luna Park to the South Pole have made 2007 a very busy year in Science. Staff and students have seen the introduction of a number of new courses which have an increased focus on sustainability and the environment.
For our Year 1O students, the year began with a Physics Excursion to Luna Park in order to show them a practical application for their learning . This was just one of many opportunities CLC students had to experience Science outside the classroom. The Cunningham Dax Exhibition at the Mental Health Research Institute of Victoria, Healesville Sanctuary, Melbourne Zoological Gardens, the Gene Technology Access Centre and the Australian Synchrotron at Monash University were some of the other venues that hosted our students. Eight lucky Year 1O students were also given the chance to take part in the Genetech 2007 Conference at GTAC in Parkville. Here they listened to a number of eminent scientists and performed a range of experiments utilising the latest in high tech scientific equipment. The ICAS (International Competitions and Assessments for Schools) Science Test gave 195 students across Years 7 to 10 a chance to assess their knowledge . Forty students were recognised for their outstanding achievement. A special mention goes to Olivia Dickson and Jennifer Carrucan who were awarded places in the prestigious STARS Science School at Melbourne University in July. This program gave the girls the opportunity to experience university life and allowed them to attain a first hand understanding of a range of sciences including Cell Biology, Zoology and Nuclear Physics. It was the nuclear physics component that provided the highlight of the experience with the girls being flown to Sydney to visit the Lucas Heights Nuclear Reactor The major focus of the year was Science Week and, with Antarctica as its theme, penguins were bound to feature! The girls were given the opportunity to watch both " Happy Feet" and "March of the Penguins ". They showed off their scientific knowledge by making slime and conducting experiments where their aim was to prevent eggs from breaking when dropped. But the highlights of the week were the performance from the Hot Ice drama group and an address by Barbara Bobbe. Her regaling of her own Antarctic adventure captivated our Year 7 students. All of these wonderful opportunities for our students reflect the hard work and dedication of our Science staff who have made the past year a great learning experience for both the students and myself. To the students of CLC, thank you for your enthusiasm and curiosity in everything Science in 2007. Mr Seamus Scorgie Science KLA Team Leader

lOTE The year 2007 has been another productive one for the LOTE Key Learning Area. Opportunities have been provided for all students of German and Indonesian to experience enjoyment and success both in and beyond the classroom. In addition to making progress with their language studies, students have embraced cultural aspects on various excursions throughout the year. Indonesian students have sampled culinary delights at the Nelayan Indonesian Restaurant (Year 9); participated in a "Gamelan" music workshop at the Indonesian Consulate (Year 1O); and joined native Indonesians for a celebration of Indonesian Independence Day (Years 11 and 12). German students have dined and danced German-style at the Cuckoo Restaurant (Year 9); increased their knowledge of former East Germany with their viewing of the film "The Lives of Others" (Year 12); and watched a theatre production of "Alice im Wunderland" (Years 11 and 12). During LOTE Week from 10-14 September, all students were involved in a range of food tasting activities. Students of Indonesian also performed cultural dances, made traditional Indonesian face-masks, cooked Indonesian pancakes ("Kueh dadar") and worked with Indonesian shadow puppets known as "Wayang kulit". Students of German sang along to German pop and folk songs, and indulged in hot waffles with jam and icecream. Senior LOTE students did not miss out on the festivities - they further developed their listening skills and cultural understanding by watching critically acclaimed films in the target language. One of the highlights of LOTE Week was a visit by the Indonesian Satay Hut, which sold delicious noodles and chicken skewers at recess and lunchtime.

As has become tradition in recent years, Catholic Ladies' College has accommodated a number of German exchange students this year. In Term One, Clarissa Blum, Hannah Schlags and Marie-Christin Bareuther were hosted by Year 10 students Genevieve Atkins, Elena Szymanski and Amy Angel. In Term Three, Verena Schropp stayed with the family of Jessica and Grace Bryant (Years 12 and 8 respectively), while Evelyn Mastalier was billoted by Jenna Hartney, Renee Deeth and Keira Shara rd (Year 10). In Term Four, Samantha Hayes (Year 1O) as well as Lauren and Lisa Garner (Year 11) reciprocated for Benedicte Baier, Vanessa Di Giulio and Lena Schweitzer, who had shown them great kindness and hospitality during their four-week stay in June at the Gisela Schule, CLC's sister school in the beautiful Bavarian city of Passau. Exchange opportunities always prove to be an enriching experience for the students themselves, their host families and indeed the entire school community. We are excited about the prospect of more such exchanges next year. Moreover, we are eagerly awaiting CLC's "Tour of Germany 2008", to be held in the Easter school holidays and the first week of Term Two. Sixteen students of German who have just completed Years 9, 10 and 12 will be embarking on this three-week mini exchange program and cultural sightseeing tour. Congratulations to all students of German and Indonesian in Years 9-12, who participated in the Assessment of Language Competence Certificates in early August. Many students were awarded Credit and Distinction grades in either or both of the Listening and Reading sections, and some even earned a High Distinction for exceptionally fine performances. Congratulations also to those students who voluntarily partook in the Sayembara Lisan Indonesian Oral Competition, in which Alexandra Towers (Year 9) progressed to the State Finals. Following in the footsteps of Jenna Morcom (1993), Genevieve Le Hunt (1994) and Jessica Bryant (1996), Jennifer Carrucan (Year 11 student of German) was granted a scholarship for a ten-week exchange program to Germany through the Society for Australian-German Student Exchange. She will leave for her adventures in Deutschland in late November. Jennifer is to be commended for her success. ~
At the end of Term One, Frau Andrea Henderson departed Catholic Ladies' College after four and half years service as a teacher of German and LOTE KLA Team Leader. During her time at the school, Frau Henderson was admired by students for her warm nature and passion for all things German. At the
beginning of Term Two, we welcomed a new member to the LOTE Key Learning Area, Frau Rosanne Moller. Frau Moller's love of the language is equally evident and she demonstrates great dedication to her work. We wish her many happy and fruitful years at CLC. At the conclusion of 2007, we also farewell Frau Ilona von Moller, teacher of German at Year 7 and/or Year 8 level for the past six years. Frau von Moller will be fondly remembered, in particular, for her use of the toy parrot "Maxi" in her classes. We wish her well in her retirement. Finally, I extend a personal thank you to all LOTE teaching staff Frau von Moller, lbu Pauline Khoo and Pak Silvinus Ruron - for their enthusiasm, commitment and significant contributions to language learning at Catholic Ladies' College in 2007. They have worked tirelessly to inspire, foster and support the development of their students. Together, we look forward to an exciting year of LOTE study in 2008. Frau Tania McGuire - LOTE KLA Team Leader
There have been many exciting developments in Mathematics this year. Students and teachers have been busy adjusting to, and becoming competent with, new technology, resources and updated courses . There is a wide range of mathematics topics and levels, with students being equipped for tertiary level (eg engineering, science, medicine, teaching), maths in the workplace (eg nursing, health sciences, business) as well as competency with the everyday maths that is expected (eg measurement, data analysis, percentages, arithmetic, problem solving). The Mathematics staff have worked with commitment, patience and energy to help our students achieve their best. Year 9 students have worked w ith the CAS (Computer Algebra System) class set of calculators in their Algebra, Equations and Graphs topics, becoming more familiar with this relatively new technology. The CAS calculators have the same graphing and arithmetic features as the current graphical calculators, but al so have the added capability of symbolic (algebra, calculus) manipulation as well as a host of other features. Just as we moved from log tables books to scientific calculators to graphic calculators, we now move to the next generation of calculators, the CAS . The VCE administrator, the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority, has deemed that for the 2010 Mathematical Methods exams they will assume all students have a CAS calculator, so it is with this in mind that our 2008 Year 10 students will be expected to have the Tl-89(Titanium) model as per the booklist. This group will go through Year 11 and 12 to pilot thi s new technology. The potential of the CAS to assist students in problem solving and understanding makes this an exciting part of the students ' maths learning. Of course this technology won't replace the "by hand" working of the students, who will need to develop both technology assisted and technology free methods for solving problem s. Knowledgeable staff w ill help guide students through this journey of understanding . Students who don't select Methods in Year 11 2009, preferring to do General then Further Maths, will also use their CAS calculator. It should be noted that our Year 11 and 12 2008 students will continue to only require their previously purchased Tl-83 or Tl-84 models and will not be part of the CAS project. Our Year 7 and 8 Maths classes have been approached with consideration of students ' different learning styles and abilities. It is with this in mind that we have used the Mathletics internet program (as well as other resources and software packages) as part of their learning. Students have the opportunity to access their M athletics both at school and at home with on-line maths competition s being quite popular. Teachers also set homework problems for the girls to consolidate and master certain skills. Students and their teachers were able to quickly diagnose strengths and attempt to address any weaknesses. The program, in conjunction with quality teaching, has helped students with their arithmetic skill s, mental computation and topic based knowledge. The students have responded enthusiastically to this way of learning and the Mathletics will again be available in 2008, along w ith some exciting new "Maths with Attitude" problem solving resources. Students competed in the UNSW Maths Competition gaining many distinctions and credits as well as the Mathematics Challenge for Young Australians (high level problem solving by invitation). Year 7 participated in a History of Mathematics performance which involved an interactive look at some of the famous mathematicians, male and female, as well as students attempting to solve some of the classic problems over the centuries. Maths Week was a highlight with various games, quizzes, competitions and activities (reciting pi , maths cake decorations, maths trail, bingo, mathletics) enthusiastically embraced by students and staff. Many thanks to our wonderful Maths Staff for their excellent teaching and role modelling, and to all our Maths students (nearly everyone in the College does Maths!) for their determination, persistence and willingness to do what it takes to become competent and confident Maths students.

SOSE New curriculum changes, including the addition of Economics at the junior levels, and a range of learning experiences have been evident through the SOSE KLA in 2007. The staff in this area continue to offer dedicated learning opportunities for students in History, Geography, Accounting, Legal Studies, Civics and Citizenship and Business Management. Year 8 students were again treated to a Medieval Day, in which fashion, dance, games and jousting were all part of the experience. Many students embraced the day coming clothed in the garments of the period. Students were fascinated by the different activities throughout this immersion experience, gaining valuable insight into this period of history which would be impossible to achieve in the classroom. The highlight of the day for many was to dress in armour and attempt to defeat the Master Jouster at his own game! Year 9 students focused on various themes throughout the year: The Yarra Valley, The Gold Rush, Civics and Citizenship and the Australian Economy. These units encompassed a number of different traditional SOSE subjects and gave students the opportunity to explore a range of views and sources, as well as gaining new skills. Students were challenged during the Gold unit where they researched an aspect of the gold rush in Australia and worked together to create a 3D model of a fictional town. SOSE Week 2007 continued to provide challenges and experiences for all students. The 'SOSE Amazing Race' ran for the whole week and saw teams eliminated each day until the final race for the finish line on the Friday. After much discovery and exploration, some strange experiences with food and many discussions with staff around the College, eleven able teams finished the race. This year also saw the inaugural CLC Geography Bee take place. Students were tested on their knowledge of both the physical and social geography of the world around them with winners being crowned in both Junior and Senior sections. My appreciation and thanks goes to each and every SOSE staff member for their expertise and to the students who have supported and actively participated in classes, excursions and activities this year. Ms Therese Smyth - SOSE KLA Team Leader
Parrernts' Associatie>n I would like to take the opportunity to publicly thank the small but committed group of parents that make up the Parents' Association who have selflessly given their time to organize and run a number of social and fund raising activities throughout 2007. Fundraising activities have included the running of a trivia night, film night, s~opping tour and raffle none of which would have been successful without the support of the College Community. I am pleased to announce that we were able to present the College with a donation of $23,000 which will be used to purchase outdoor furniture, to be supplied and installed by the end of the 07/08 summer. With the purchase of this furniture, the Parents' Association has completed the project of replacing most if not all of the outdoor furniture. It is hoped that, following th is year's fu ndraising activities, we will be in a position to donate a modest amount of funds in 2008. We would like to wish everyone much happiness for the upcoming Christmas and holiday period, and look forward to seeing many of you at various functions throughout next year.

2007 has offered many opportunities within the Health and Personal Development classrooms to participate in meaningful learning. The learning experiences have focused on encouraging and supporting all CLC students to adopt a healthy lifestyle and participate regularly in physical activity. The commencement of VELS has redefined the structure of curriculum within our Key Learning Area. The introduction of Rich Tasks gave students the opportunity to assume a more active role in their multifaceted learning. This was evident when the Year 8 students completed a unit of work that integrated with the Science Key Learning Area. The task was titled 'Exploring nutrition, diet and body systems'. The students enjoyed the chance to work within two subject areas and developed their knowledge of health status, healthy eating and consumer product labelling.

We have continued to strengthen our relationships with those outside our community. Year 7 students visited Jets Gymnastics for an introduction to the world of competitive gymnastics while Year 10 students enjoyed participating in practical sessions run by Mark from Nolasco Taekwondo and Eltham YMCA The Year 9 and 10 Health Forums once again saw the involvement of many community organisations and helped expose students to many aspects of physical, social and emotional health . The "Girls On The Move at CLC" theme was embraced throughout the year and encouraged a love of life-long physical activity for students. The diversity of sports included within the Personal Development curriculum allowed students to develop and refine motor skills, gain a sense of satisfaction and enjoyment through sport and overall build teamwork with peers. The redevelopment of the oval was completed mid year and further enhanced our first-class PE facilities. A new addition of a dividing curtain in the gymnasium provided opportunities for greater utilisation of the space, allowing for multiple classes to be conducted simultaneously. Many thanks are extended to the Health and Personal Development staff; your continued dedication, vision and enthusiasm for teaching all students the importance of a healthy lifestyle and participation in physical activity is truly appreciated. To all the CLC students, thank you for all your commitment and involvement in all that was Health and Physical Education in 2007.
Ms Natalie Beaston - Health & Personal Development KLA Team Leader
The Visual Art's Faculty grew this year with five new classes running and a new staff member Ms Rachael Nolan. The staff has helped greatly in supporting the Visual Arts this year giving all they had to the students. We were very lucky to have had the Guggenheim Collection in Melbourne, giving the VCE Art students an opportunity to view artworks of famous artists such as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein . During the year, Art Week gave the whole school an opportunity to show off their talent in various competitions such as photography. In Third Term we were lucky enough to have an Artist in Residence, Ms Petra Reece, who painted a landscape of the College grounds while the students watched. There was a great level of participation from students from all year levels including the completion of the Walkway Mosaic that all the Middle School students were involved in. All students submitted work of a high standard , making me, as Visual Arts Captain very proud . Visual Art has also expanded through the College community with our own personal gallery hung around the walls of the school, ranging from photography, paintings, graphic designs and many more. On a sad note, we bid goodbye to both Mrs Flanagan and Ms Quinn who will both be missed greatly. We wish them the best for what ever their futures entail. Thanks!
Jessica Quinlan - Visual Arts Captain
It has proven to be yet another busy and exciting year for both staff and students in the Technology faculty. Across all year levels, students use computers to enhance their learning. In Year 8 Materials & Technology students enjoy the challenge of designing and making fan powered cars; they learn to make a simple circuit, to solder and to create a technical drawing . Plastic moulded wall clocks and acrylic jewellery are made in Technology in Yr 9; here they are taught to use the band saw to cut wood and hand saws to cut and shape layered acrylic into wearable costume jewellery. In Year 9 Technology, existing technological skills are taken and together with the use of Photoshop and Audition, effects and soundtracks are generated to produce animations. Year 1O Business Computing competently prepares the girls for the business world. Word, Excel, Access, Powerpoint, Inspiration and Photoshop are some of the programs used to develop significant skills for their future . From Years 8 to 12, Food Technology students study a diverse range of topics. They delve into the world of multicultural Australia and learn to prepare a great variety of European, Asian, Middle Eastern and South American foods. Adolescent nutrition, food models, meal planning, food safety, product development, new and emerging food trends are some of the many topics covered . The girls learn to investigate, design, produce and evaluate a range of food products. They thoroughly enjoy discovering new tastes and fl avours and ea ti ng and sharing their foods with family and fri ends. In August we celebrated Technology Week. Many students and staff became actively involved in the digital photo and animation competitions; the week finished with dancing in the hall to DJ U Mase. In September at the College, Years 11 & 12 Food Technology students attended a cooking demonstration by Gabriel Gate, celebrity chef and presenter of cookery programmes on television, radio and other venues. Gabriel shared many stories with humour and gusto and gave the girls hints on how to start their lives as successful single young women. Gabriel's presence proved to be a truly momentous and exciting experience for those who participated . It was an occasion we will all remember and treasure. I personally wish to thank the dedicated and committed Technology team: Mrs Anne Maynes, Mr Brian Pearce, Mr David Todd, Mrs Anne Major, Mrs Kerry McKiterick and Ms Gayanne Galyston for sharing their diverse talents and expertise with their students. It has been a wonderful year and we look forward to 2008 with excitement and enthusiasm.

Meeting people and enjoy activities that are never available to the general public were life changing experiences for Emma, affirming her intention to pursue a career in science.
Year 11 Work Experience ~~~~~~~~-
Walking into Victoria Legal Aid was a very anxious experien ce. It wa s quarter to nine in the morning. I wa nted to be early the first day, so I co uld make a good impress ion on Kylie, the person in charge of the criminal law division, and her personal assist ant, Sarah . " Good morning. My name is Jess ica De Petro and I am doing w ork experience at Legal Aid in the criminal law division . I received a letter explaining that I was t o co me to reception and someone would come down from the criminal division to coll ect me," I managed to say confidently to the receptioni st. She told me to wait in the lounge room and someone would be w ith me shortly. I could feel butterflies in my stoma ch as I w as very nervous. Travelling in the elevator to the eighteenth floor with Sarah, who w as personal ass istant to Kylie, w as quite thrilling. I started f eeling excited when Sarah told me all of the wonderful experiences I would be having . Once in the office, Kylie introduced me t o all the employees and showed me my very own desk with all the equipment I needed to carry out my duties properly. Every morning I went to the Magistrates ' Court and I even had the chance to attend the County Court. There, I listened to court hearings, trials and sentences. I had the unique opportunity to sit in on the meetings between the lawyers and the accused person, hearing what they had done to deserve a court summons. In the afternoons I would walk back to the office and complete tasks that needed to be done. I had to deli ver confidential documents to a Forensic Psychologist, photocopy files of old cases, find court transcripts and help a new lawyer move her belongings into her new office. While on Work Experience, I learned a lot about court procedures and all the documentation that needs to be filled out in regards to crimes being committed. It has opened my eyes into a life of a lawyer and the court environment. Hopefully, one day I will become a police prosecutor and punish those who fail to obey the law.

VCAL once again afforded the opportunity for students to take part in a range of activities this year. Several students undertook hair and beauty courses at institutions such as Headmasters and Victoria University, and work placements and other excursions allowed students to learn beyond the classroom on a regu lar basis. One of the highlights of 2007 was the highly successful VCALrun coffee shop that operated for two days early in Term 4. A visit to the William Angliss Coffee Academy for a short course on Tuesday, 4th September ensured that the students knew how to pour the perfect espresso and were competent in making cappuccinos, lattes and a variety of other coffees. Practice making hot chocolate was also a necessary part of the course if the VCAL girls were to be prepared to cater for the huge demand at CLC. On Tuesday, 9th October, the students were open for business. Mr Colin Barnard, from Cafe-a-la-Carte, provided the espresso machine and some quick refresher instruction. Nothing, however, could have prepared the girls for the onslaught once the.. bell for recess had rung! The VCAL students rose to the occasion and were successful in selling excellent coffee, hot chocolate, cookies and muffins. Staff appreciated the pre-order and delivery service available to them and were impressed with the efficient teamwork, skill and hard work of the VCAL students. With numbers in VCAL doubling for 2008, Catholic Ladies' College is committed to providing students with experiences to learn in a practical way and to take positive steps towards preparing them for a satisfying career.

Year 11 Formal
Year 11 lefleetion Year 11 s are always caught between the seriousness of Year 12 and the longing for the days which they remember as being more carefree and joyous. As such they often find settling down to a study regimen a challenging task but one which most adapt to reasonably quickly. To alleviate the pain such a transition has been known to cause, we reward their efforts with the Formal half way through the year. The Formal is the opportunity for students to organise and enjoy a night of festivities in a more 'adult' setting than they may be used to from previous school socials. Set at Lincoln of Toorak, the Formal this year was a great success which brought out the social best from most members of the year level. Another step forward in their journey to adulthood is the girls starting to learn to drive. At the end of Term 2 the entire year level participated in a day's activities under the banner of " Fit to Drive". Run by Victoria Police, this day aims to give the girls strategies to handle situations where their friends may be making decisions which impede their ability to drive. It raised the awareness of the students and hopefully sent them away with the idea that it is never true that "it won't happen to me." On the social justice front, Year 11 s are involved in the Fitzroy Project where a number of girls have given up a couple of hours on a Saturday night to assist with serving meals to homeless men in Fitzroy. For a small time commitment, the girls are able to gain an insight into the lives of less fortunate members of our society. We would hope that some are inspired to carry on such work outside the school setting. The homeroom teachers this year - Mrs Janet Deller, Ms Diana Randazzo, Ms Melinda Wills, Mrs Marianne Roberts, Dr Dawn Duncan and Mr David Young - have all been a great asset in helping the girls find their way through the maze of "VCEisms" and Subject Selection for Year 12. Homeroom teachers were also very involved in the process of electing the School Captains for 2008: Sarah Jupp and Brianna Curtis. I would like to thank the students, parents and teachers of Year 11 for their support of one another and for their ongoing work in making Year 11 at CLC a time of growth and learning.

A highlight on the careers calendar this year was the Careers Forum held in July. As the girls in the senior school began to make decisions about their own futures through choosing subjects for VCE and looking at post-school options, the opportunity to hear about the experiences of past CLC students was a valuable one. A wide range of occupational areas was represented including design, business, science, tourism, law and the medical field. A highlight was hearing the individual stories and how each person had achieved her goals. We are very grateful that former students are so willing to give up their time in order to share their experiences with our current students.
Ms Annette Kilsby - Careers Coordinator
Once a CLC girl, always a CLC girl! 2007 has seen a number of opportunities for former students to re-establish their links with the College. Early in the year the graduates of 2005 met in the Year 12 Common Room to share their many experiences since they left school - not all that long ago. An afternoon tea was held in August for current students and their mothers and/or grandmothers who were former students (pictured). Some of the grandmothers went to school at East Melbourne in the 1940s! School was certainly different then. The class of 1977 celebrated their 30 year reunion at CLC Eltham with champagne and chatter flowing freely. Some had even flown in from interstate. A highlight of the evening was a rousing rendition of the College Song, conducted by their Music teacher who also attended the celebrations. The 10 and 20 year reunions also brought together many friends many of whom had not seen each other for a whole decade. Former students have continued to make valuable contributions to the school community as was evident at the Careers Forum . Our Alumni presenters were wonderful role models for current students as they shared their journeys of life after school. Friendships made at CLC often last a lifetime. Maintaining links with the College certainly helps former pupils to stay connected with one another, as well as with the wider College community.

Yearr 1 2 Reflection
In 2002, 145 girls arrived at CLC with wide eyes, unifmt4\s too big and an apprehension about their 'ne beginning' . They wondered what their new school might be like, who their new friends might be and whether they would ever remember their new lock combination. At the end of the year 2007, these same girls are embarking on another 'new beginning', this time with the experience and growth they have ga ined from their shared journey as Year 12 students of Catholic Ladies' College. They leave CLC in the knowledge that they are important and valued members of our College community. The girls embark on the next phase of their lives with all our best wishes and hopes that theirs is a world richer for the contributions they make . 2007 was a very important year for all of us at Year 12. Whilst recognizing that the year brought with it unique challenges and tests, we also have had the opportunity to share and celebrate some memorable experiences. The Retreats at Millgrove and Creswick were wonderful opportun ities to share important time together. We celebrated a fun night at the Formal and shared many laughs on Founders' Day. Some of us had the great fortune to work with Somali refugee students in a tutoring capacity at the Edmund Rice centre and others had their first experience as Donors with Service. The 2007 VCE Art Show was a fantastic success once agai amazing talents of our senior students. Along w ith studies, sports, dram and academic achievements, 2007 has been a very full and varied year. On behalf of the Year 12 students, I would like to thank all the staff for their work with the girls over the year. Thank you to the Year 12 staff, Mrs Pascalis, Dr Crowle, Puk Sil Ruron, Ms Barry and Mr Tod. Particular thanks and good luck to Ms Amy Quinn as she embarks on her travel adventures, and best wishes to Mrs Suzanne Tob in in her retirement. We thank her very much for all she has contributed to Catholic Ladies' College. The care and concern she has shown Year 12 students over the last two years especially has been very much appreciated. As we leave 2007 and continue the next phase of our individual journeys, we wish everyone a safe, happy and replenishing New Year.

First We Party Then We Sa¥ Goodbye
Year 12 2007 is most definitely a year level of remarkable and charismatic individuals. However, even we could not have survived our final year of our schooling without the help of those around us at CLC and in particular our year 12 teachers. Thanks must go to our homeroom teachers; Dr Crowle, Puk Sil Ruron, Mrs Tobin, Miss Quinn, Ms Barry and Mr Tod who had the difficult task of motivating and enthusing us every morning. Although we may not always have expressed it, we all greatly appreciate your help and support, especially towards the end of this year. Thanks also to our fearless leader, Ms Keogh, and organizer extraordinaire, Mrs Pascalis, who both offered not only support and wisdom but helped all of us out of a myriad of complex situations at least once during the year. Your hard work is often unseen but it is sincerely valued by all of us in Year 12. Thank you CLC for our six years of education and for the many experiences we have had here.
