speak up for what they believe in, to reach out to the underprivileged and the marginalised on a larger scale than ever before.

2005 hos been a year of mixed blessings for our world as well as our College Community. I recall the human loss and devastation associated with the Tsunami, Cyclone Katrina, the London and Bali Bombings and the continuing war in Iraq. As a College Community we hove also mourned the loss of Year 11 Student, Sarah Zonotto. At times of such intense loss we ore reminded of the vulnerability and preciousness of the gift of life. The stories of courage and compassion of ordinary people doing extraordinary things for others gives us renewed hope and optimism. I hove been particularly proud of the outreach support and leadership that many of our senior students hove provided to others throughout the year. As a Catholic people, we hove honoured Pope John Poul 11 at the time of his death; we hove also celebrated the subsequent election of Pope Benedict. These hove been proud times for our tradition and faith, with the notions of compassion and justice being clearly articulated through Pope Benedict's leadership. This year hos also seen our Inaugural Indigenous Immersion to Central Australia. The seven students and two staff members were representing our College Community as they travelled through remote areas of Central Australia; the students ore now leading our Community to a greater understanding and awareness of Indigenous issues facing our country. I om certain you will enjoy their reflections of this unique and privileged opportunity. The pages of Coritos celebrate the many achievements and initiatives of 2005. The new Year 9 Program, with its Inquiry Based Learning Projects, hos enabled a rich and diverse learning environment to emerge for our Year 9 Students. It hos been delightful to shore the enthusiasm of the Snow Sports Team as they participated in this event for the first time. Our Performing Arts Concert Spectacular in August was a great tribute to the talent and energy of so many students .· Throughout the lotter port of the year staff groups hove worked on the review, evaluation and renewal of the current Strategic Pion . As a College, we hove much to be proud of and celebrate; the 20062009 Strategic Pion will be promulgated early in 2006_

It is through this new generation of women that the chorism of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Charity can continue to be seen in action:

"To bring to each the love, tenderness and concern of Christ for the poor, seeing Christ in everyone we serve".

At this time of year, we ore mindful of those who ore finishing their time at Catholic Ladies ' College, be they students, families or staff. I sincerely thank them for their time with us. The good reputation the College holds in the Community is due to the wonderful work and contributions of people such as these. In acknowledging the many gifts within our community, I would particularly thank the College Boord of Directors, and Chairman Mr John Mitcham. Under the Core of the Sisters of Charity, the Boord, together with College Stoff strive to provide the best possible learning environment for the students of this College. Moy you enjoy and treasure the memories of 2005 at Catholic Ladies' College as presented in this edition of Coritos.

Margaret McKenna (Mrs) Principal

CONGREGATIONAL LEADER OF THE SISTERS OF CHARITY This edition of the College magazine crowded with images of lively young women engaging with every aspect of school life, demonstrates how much there is to celebrate in the life of Catholic Ladies' College. I om very heartened by what I see as CLC strives to be not only a learning community but a spiritual community where gospel values ore given primacy and the inner life of individuals is nourished. This is a new generation of Australian women in whom we ore encouraging optimism, openness of mind, and inclusiveness. This is a new generation of Australian women whom we ore educating to be contributors on the world stage as well as locally. This is a new generation of Australian women whom we ore educating to

The education ministry of the Sisters of Charity in Australia is a very significant port of our history, at primary, secondary and tertiary levels. As in the time of Mory Aikenheod , our founder, we ore educating with on awareness of the need for young people to be well equipped to face the challenges of the times. In the twenty first century this means being young women who hove a critical awareness of social and political issues, who ore prepared to be leaders in a world of change, where the rote of change is fast and the complexity of issues con be daunting . A solid understanding of our spiritual heritage will enable our young women to toke their place optimistically and compassionately in the contemporary world . Young women who, as the College Mission statement soys, ore "confident of their own worth as women , and wholly involved in the transformation of society" . On behalf of the Sisters of Charity, I extend my deep appreciation to all members of the school community who hove contributed to continuing our proud heritage of mission based education at Catholic Ladies' College Elthom in 2005.

Sr. Elizabeth Dodds, rsc Congregational leader

The end of another year provides us with an opportunity to reflect on the year that was 2005. We welcomed a new group of Year 7s, we farewelled another group of Year l 2s. Along the way some came and some left to move into different environments. The life of a school, especially CLC, is never static, it is dynamic, always moving . It continually evolves and changes because it is filled with life. As a community filled with life, so it is also a life giving community to all those who belong. Achievements abound , successes are obvious, friendships are forged and the spirit of CLC permeates all. Coritos 2005 reflects this beautifully. A year filled with many celebrations and great blessings. But it is also reflects great commitment from so many people who make up our community. The question needs to be asked about what is at the core of our community. Sister Stanislaus Kennedy, an Irish Sister of Charity, reflects on her visit to a school in Ireland. This visit took place towards the end of the academic year and offers a timely reflection for us. Sister Stanislaus writes about her experience whilst visiting the school: Recently I was guest of honour at on award ceremony in a school. The awards covered a wide range of cultural, social, spiritual, artistic and academic achievements, gifts and talents. Clearly in this school education was seen not as something purely academic but as a process of becoming full human beings. The children were taught to co-operate with one another, to appreciate each other and to rejoice in each other's promises, hopes and fruitfulness. I could not help wondering what life would be like for these children when they left that caring school and entered the materialistic, consumerorientated, achievement-driven world . But then I thought, if they have acquired the right values at school and at home, these values will sustain them in the future.

SR STANISLAUS KENNEDY RSC GARDENING THE SOUL Sr Stanislaus understood much more about this particular school than just the mere granting of awards at this ceremony. When we reflect on life at CLC it is important to ide~tify what we value. It seems obvious to me when I look around and see the interactions of all within our community. On the whole these interactions are based on the values of compassion, justice, reconciliation , peace and love. And when at times - this seems not to be the case, it is necessary to reflect on how these values can be promoted to come to the fore when they are not so apparent. These values speak volumes about our CLC community.

This vision based on compassion and justice, leads us to look beyond ourselves and to be individuals for others in our society and world. The young women of CLC are to be women filled with hope for the future, open to change and to be discerning about choices to be made. As 2005 draws to a close I offer my best wishes to all in our community.

Mr Christopher Dalton Deputy Principal

Coordinator to write a report for Coritos. This position was created to help unify the Middle School and to work with students, staff and parents/ guardians to strengthen the experience which each girl hos as she moves into CLC and through Years 7, 8 and 9. The range of educative experiences students have participated in has been rich and varied and while students and staff worked intensely throughout the year it is clear to me that CLC is generally a very happy environment where each girl can and does thrive. Both the classroom and extra curricular activities reflect the idea that students learn better when they feel , safe, connected well known and valued in their environment. Programs at Years 7, 8 and 9 all encourage students to develop an awareness of their thinking and learning styles and engage students in rich , inquiry tasks. The Outdoor Education Program challenged individuals and groups to take risks in a safe and guided bush setting. Many friendships between students and staff have been formed through a brood range of college activities. Only recently it was my pleasure to both view and also be on duty at our CLC Concert Spectacular. I was moved by the sheer joy and pleasure students experienced as they shared their achievements and gifts with the college community. This year many students have actively participated in an extensive range of leadership formation activities. Many teachers worked with students and together they have enriched our life here at CLC and contributed to the ongoing life of the College.

SENIOR YEARS COORDINATOR Catholic Ladies' College is always "buzzi ng " with great activities. Every term our girls have had the opportunity to participate in and contribute to the life of the College community. This hos been the case for the College Student Representative Council. The girls led by Captain Erin Anderson and Vice Captain Courtney Ashworth , hove undertaken their responsibilities with great gusto and professionali sm. Starting with Project Compassion in Term l , the CLC Factor in Term 2 that raised money for Moira Kelly and Footy day in Term 3 raising money for the Sisters of Charity in Zambia. I am proud of the way in which the girls have developed in their roles and responsibilities since the start of the year. Across Senior School the girls have faced different challenges and hove grown and matured during the course of the year. Toastmasters was a terrific opportunity for the Year l 0 girls to sharpen their public speaking skills. They became more self-assured overcoming their timidity and thus speaking more convincingly as the weeks progressed. The Year l 0 Social was a notable highlight and under the expert direction of Ms Young , much preparation went into the organisation of the night which proved to be a great success. Selection of subjects for Year l l has made our Year l 0 girls aware of the demands required of them for the next two years. Thi s was a great learning experience and excellent use was made of the time to seek guidance from teachers for their subject choices. The Year l l and Year 12 Formals were memorable events. The success of these nights was testimony to the hard work of the students involved in the organization and of the caring guidance and dedication of Ms Keogh and Ms Fortini. I would like to thank the Year Level Team Leaders : Year 10 Ms Anne Young Year 11 Ms Sonia Fortini Year 12 Ms Annette Keogh

My congratulations to all students and staff in the Middle School for all your outstanding efforts and achievements throughout the year.

Their dedication and attention to every detail year levels has made it possible for the girl s at Catholic Ladies' College to remember 2005 as a year where they grew together, learned many new skills and more importantly were port of a caring community.

SENIOR EXECUTIVE COUNCIL 2005 2nd Row L-R : Erin Anderson , Stephanie Audley, Christina Ghabodi , Stephanie Smeriglio Front Row L-R : Courtney Ashworth, Katie O'Neill

It feels like only yesterday I slipped into my beloved black jumper, my new T-bar shoes and set myself up in Currajeen - the home of the year l 2's for the next nine months. Nine months ago, I was not alone in facing the long journey from the base of the CLC driveway to the far end of the school - our first challenge of the year. I was full of excitement, energy, enthusiasm and a touch of fear. It is difficult to describe such a year in only a few words when so many people made so many accomplishments. I have had an inspiring year. Year 12 is a combination of opportunity, delight, happiness, challenges, and at times, misery and tears . I can't believe how quickly the past nine months have flown by. It has been such an amazing honour and privilege to represent the CLC community as College Captain and SRC President. There are many people who have contributed to the success of the SRC this year. Firstly, Courtney Ashworth , our Vice Captain , thank you so much for your support this year. Without your organization and assistance the SRC would not have been able to achieve such goals as we did. Your dedication and enthusiasm is indeed something to be very proud of. I have enjoyed working with you and having you by my side when I most needed it. A huge thank you also goes to Mrs Fornito, an amazing teacher and friend whose utmost dedication, guidance, support and hard work has been invaluable to the SRC. Your first year as Senior Years coordinator has been especially successful, and I appreciate all you have done for me this year.

Mrs Rita Viapiano, Mrs Lyn Hosking , Mrs Anne Fookes and the entire administration staff have been fantastic in helping me out this year, making so many of my tasks easier. Their friendly faces have made every visit to the office pleasing. The Senior SRC - Erin Norton , Lauren McGhettian , Amanda Ceravolo, Rebecca Harris and Bridget loniadees - all helped out this year in every way they could . Their leadership skills and school spirit have made a positive contribution to the SRC. I have loved working with you all . You are a fantastic group of girls and together it was the team the SRC made that allowed us to achieve so very much . I have enjoyed working with the SRC representatives from each year level. Their dedication and support, especially through fundraising has been fantastic. In particular, I wish our Year l l SRC representative, Marita Snipe, the best of luck in taking on the role of College Captain next year. I would like to thank the entire staff, students and wider community. Your endless support, encouragement and friendship have certainly made my job a lot easier. Forming friendships with teachers has been a fantastic experience. They all work so hard for the school to operate successfully and offer students so many opportunities . Mrs McKenna and Mr Dalton have kept me on track this year and are an inspiration to the school community. Their dedication and guidance is phenomenal.

I could never have survived the year without the help and on-going support of each of my Year 12 peers . Our year level has bonded strongly and many girls have formed close and lasting friendships .Thank you for your guidance. You are all amazing individuals and I have enjoyed spending the last six years with you. They have been unforgettable and being honoured with the role of College Captain makes the already difficult task of leaving at the end of the year so much harder. I wish you all the best in the future and may you find all the fulfilment and enjoyment life has to offer. I encourage all girls to hold close the CLC spirit and may the College motto ' knowledge and virtue' stay close to you . I can't express how grateful I am to CLC for the opportunities offered to me over my years here. CLC is a place I have always, and will always, hold close to my heart. I will carry on the Mission statement of a learning, spiritual , celebrating and prophetic community with me forever. Thank you CLC

Erin Anderson

2005 has been a challenging year for bath staff and students alike . A year full or fun, experience, personal growth and learning for the CLC community. The Student Representative Council and SRC successfully raised money for various charities by holding a number of school events. In Term 1, the SRC raised money for Caritas Project Compassion with a total of $3660.35. This is double what was collected last year and the girls are to be commended for their fantastic efforts . The SRC held a cake stall that raised over $300 . 7D and 12B raised the most money in their respective year levels and were rewarded with a hot chip lunch . Also Ms Randazzo and Ms Farchione's Year 8 homeroom are to be commended for their efforts raising over $400 combined . In 2005 Caritas has been working in over 50 countries providing support in some of the world 's poorest countries . Its aim is to bring about long-term change by addressing the ca uses of poverty and creating suitable development programs, such as providing access to clean running water, creating income generating activities and providing support to HIV/ AIDS sufferers and their families in South Africa and the Pacific . In Term 2, the SRC raised money for Moira Kelly's Children

SRC 20.05 2nd Row L-R: Bridgette Ioannid is, Erin Norton, Merila Snipe, Courtney Ashworth , Amy Tambakis, Lauren McGett1gan, Rebecca Harris, Emma Lydiate Fron.I Row L~R : Madison Livingstone, Amanda Ceravolo, Erin Anderson , Danielle Busuttil, Cara Thompson , Alexis Agostino, Fel1c10 Pantaleo, Tess Wright Absent: Amy Bryans First Foundation . This is a foundation for children from Third World with curable illnesses, to be treated in Australia. She organizes for their rehabilitation and care whilst here in Australia. Her other work includes providing homes for disadvantaged or at-risk Victoria children and long-term accommodation and care for Australian foster children . In 2004 at a school assembly, we were lucky enough for Moira to visit with a number of 'her children ' . We, as a school community, promised her to raise enough money to pay for return airfares to Australia for a child. Our major event for Term 2 was the SRC, CLC-Factor, a singing and dancing competition open to all students . It was a fantastic five days with many talented girls singing their hearts out and dancing away, while at the same time earning points for their houses. We also had fantastic support from the staff and students. Our thanks go to the staff that helped with supervision and especially to Mrs Morgana Walker and Mr Cain MacDonald who entertained the audience with their rendition of ' Almost Here' by Deltra Good rem and Brian McFadden . The SRC would like to congratulate Shannon Pike from Year 8, who at the end of the week, was deemed to display the 'CLC-Factor' by the audience and judges. On May 27 the SRC ran a cosual clothes day, which from a gold coin collection, collected around $1200. This along with over $600 raised from CLCFactor, (the very successful Dancing Like the Stars run by the Year S's), an anonymous staff donation and chocolate and softdrink sales coordinated by Sr Judith and her enthusiastic team , the CLC community managed to raise $4338.40 for Moira Kelly's Foundation , enough for two return airfares. Moira has promised to bring the children to a school assembly next year. This will enable the girls to see the people their donations helped . Term 3 was a big one for the SRC with our annual SRC Footy Day. The day contained much fun and excitement for staff and students who were given the opportunity to show team support of the AFL kind. At lunchtime in the gym a number of activities were held including handballing competitions and relay races. Outside many staff and students braved the cold Melbourne weather to watch the year 12 Footy Match where again Mrs Morgana Walker's and Mr Cain MacDonald showed extra enthusiasm as they coached the Year 12 Blue and Yellow football teams respectively. In the end Blue thoroughly

defeated the undermanned Yellows- 6 .3 .39 to 0 . 1. 1. The Nestle Milo Van also attended providing a lovely chocolate milk boost to students to accompany the hot food lunches . CLC was also very lucky this year to host Collingwood's Alan Didak, Ben Johnson and David King , all of whom happily

signed autographs and posed for photos with many girls. The gold coins collection raised $653.95 to support the Sisters of Charity with their work with the elderly in Zambia, Africa . Our thanks go to all staff and students who helped with the successful running of this day. Term 4 concluded with a very successful " Bandanna Week " in October. The girls were given the opportunity to purchase and wear bandannas in their house colours and show their support for Can Teen. Can Teen , The Australian Organisation for Young People Living with cancer, is the national support organisation for young people (aged 12-24) living with cancer. It includes cancer patients, their brothers and sisters and young people with parents or primary carers with cancer They organise recreational winter and summer camps as well as various weekend trips for both the teenagers with cancer and their families. At the end of the year a number of students from various year levels were recognised for their achievements through the SRC Awards. The girls were recognised for their contributions in one of three major areas : Service, Non-academic Achievement and Leadership. The SRC would like to congratulate all these girls for their efforts . Erin and I would like to thank all the SRC for their contributions and the College Staff for their support throughout the year. We have worked hard and learnt many new things about ourselves as leaders and as a team . We are very grateful for the opportunities we have been provided with whilst at CLC.

The class of Year 12 2005 have been challenged by the VCE, have strengthened their friendships and have built on their commitment to social justice. I'm sure all at Year 12 will remember their final year at CLC with great fondness and a sense of achievement. We celebrated the Formal on a fantastic evening in June at The Centre in Ivanhoe. We raised funds for the AIDS Trust at the CLC and Parade Gala, at the same time showcasing the many and varied talents of our students. We acknowledged our sporting prowess at the Sports Award Night and celebrated CLC at the Performing Arts Spectacular. The next stpge of the journey is to complete the end of year exams. I won't say this is an ending but rather a new beginning , so I acknowledge each of our graduating students and wish them farewell as they leave our College. This has been a year that we have all enjoyed, and we wish all the Year l 2s well for their futures .

1

May you be blessed with good friends . May you learn to be a good friend to yourself. May you be able to journey to that place in your soul where there is great love, warmth and forgiveness . May this change you. May it transfigure that which is negative, distant or cold in you. May you be brought into real passion, kinship and belonging. May you treasure your friends . May you be good to them and may they bring you all the blessings challenges, truth and light that you need for the journey. May our College Molto of Knowledge and Virtue continue to guide and inform your lives. And most especially, may you always be in the gentle nest of belonging with your loving God.

This year was CLC's biggest year in sport ever. 2005 saw the introduction of Badminton, Golf and Life Saving into our already hectic sporting calendar. Some of the other sports the College competed in were basketball, netball, cross country, volleyball , soccer, hockey and tenn is just to name a few. In addition to all the sports we participate, there were the two major sporting carnivals, swimming and athletics. Our Swimming Carnival kicked off the year with the ' Under the Sea ' theme for the day. We were wrap! to see bright team colours and hear loud voices filling the stand at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre as students supported their teams. Turtles and fish were the big hits in the costume department. It was a fantastic day had by all who participated . The team spirit at sporting events didn't stop there, the Athletics Carnival saw some of you dressed in house colours as crocodiles and even Kermit the frog. Although there were champions of each year level you were all champions for taking part in another successful athletics carnival. CLC hosting the lnterschool Athletes Carnival was also a huge highlight of our year as Captains. Being part of the sport within CLC over the last six years has been a great experience. We urge all of you to participate in sports within the College because the PE teachers devote a lot of hard work and time to making all the events we compete in a success. Continue to play sport and enjoy the many friends you will make. We were both extremely proud to be the Sports Captains for 2005 . We were also proud to be part of the friendly College Community both from students and teachers here at C.L.C. We would like to wish the Sports Captains of 2006 the best of luck. We' re sure they' ll be enthusiastic in their roles, but they can only do it with your support.

PERFORMING ARTS REPORT We are so proud of the efforts by the Performing Arts Team throughout the course of the year. Through the combined efforts of the different performing arts areas; dance, drama, choir and orchestra, we have found much new talent and have put on amazing shows. The drama club has had a lot of fun creating and perform ing plays for different year levels and the school. They were privileged to have a Martial Arts expert come in and teach the girls the art of play fighting in preparation for the Spectacular concert. Both the senior and junior dance group have choreographed many dances that have entertained the school at many assemblies. Their many lunchtimes dedicated to hard work paid off at the Concert Spectacular. The choir has been privileged to have their new conductor, Gemma Hedger, guide them through a repertoire of challenging and exciting songs . The girls have flourished in preparation for the concert Spectacular and the choir tour, and put on a breathtaking performance at both events. The CLC orchestra has been kept busy this year with the CLC Concert Spectacular. To help them prepare, they were met by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, which helped them to develop their already rich talents. A thanks to all those who participated throughout the year, and we are sure that the foundations of new talent and hard work we built together, will prosper for many more years to come. A special thanks to Mrs. Boyle for all her time and dedication in all aspects of the performing arts, and for supporting us through all our endeavours.

VISUAL ARTS REPORT 2005 has been an enormously productive year in Visual Arts. This year has seen some amazing artistic talent arise, as all the visual art students have explored their deep horizons and exciting imaginations.

behalf of all the students. Ms. Flanagan, Ms. Quinn, Ms Twigden, Mrs . Falvo and Mrs . Mason - your constant support, time, love and care is much valued as each student has benefited from your phenomenal efforts. Finally, I would like to thank the CLC community for giving me the opportunity of being Visual Arts Captain in 2005 . This has been a great honor and a fantastic privilege. Every term has seen the production of personalised and unique creations that are constantly filling the art rooms whether it has been the Year l's bending wire into representations of themselves, the Year S's creating colourful and intricate carnivale inspired masks, or the introduction of new and innovative visual art class in the middle school year levels. Each different class has showcased their enormous capabilities and love for being creative, which has not only impressed myself, but all the staff and students at CLC. I' m so proud of you girls! For the senior students, this year has thrown many constant challenges and difficult obstacles, which, nevertheless, we seem to have effectively overcome. The demanding time, work and effort each art and visual design and communication student has put into their folios must be applauded and congratulated . Their abilities to deal with tasks and be productive under pressure is truly amazing.

To the fabulous Visual Arts Staff, I would like to show my appreciation by thanking you on

VCE VISUAL ART EXHIBITION This year's Visual Art Exhibition in October was a chance for our artwork to be admired by friends, family, past arts students and the CLC community. Having diverse artwork from Visual Art, Visual Communication and Design and Media showcased together, acknowledge d how much talent and passion goes into the work produced in these subjects. Preparing folios is a test of pure commitment, vision , motivation and time management. This exhibition was a wonderful chance for all to view how much hard work has been put in by students and teachers in these subject areas .

Her strong sense of fairness and discretion in dealing with students is a hallmark of her loyal and supportive style. These qualities hove been evident in tne relations she hos had with students and colleagues alike. Ruth will be missed by the College community. We wish her the very best as she moves into a new phase of her life, and trust she finds fulfilment in her retirement.

Sonia Fortini

is leaving our CLC community to toke up on appointment at Siena College Comberwell as LOTE Co-ordinator, where she will rekindle her love of teaching the Italian language. Sonia hos been a valued member of the CLC staff for 5 years where hos taught Italian , English , Careers and Religious Education and held Positions of Leadership as LOTE Co-ordinator and both Year l 0 and Year l l Team Leader. In her enormous capacity, Sonia hos touched the lives of students and staff with her truly caring and sensitive nature. She hos imparted enthusiasm , creativity and passion in her teaching and displayed a true spirit of community in her involvement with numerous activities beyond the classroom . Both the staff and students alike will miss her presence and sense of fun and witty humor. As a community, we thank Sonia for all her many contributions and wish her every success with her new position and know that she will toke great memories of CLC with her.

Stephanie Turbach We farewell Stephanie ofter 5 years at CLC as Computer Network Manager. Stephanie hos been with the College since October 2000, . during this time she hos provided excellent service and direction in the ways she hos supported the growth and development of the College ICT Network. Stephanie commenced at CLC fresh from Canada and settled in the area with her family. We hove all enjoyed Stephonies quiet friendly ways and her patience with many of us when it come to using computers. She hos always been a well liked member of staff and we wish her well for the future .

Ross McDonald worked as the College Property Officer from January 1995 to September 2001 and returned 15 April 2002 until 25 February 2005. Ross hos been a hard working , diligent member of staff whose workmanship con be clearly seen around the property. He hos helped all of us at some point in time with many and varied requests which he went about doing in his quiet efficient manner. We soy goodbye again to Ross as he pursues he own business interests and wish him well in these endeavours. Paola Fornito joined us at CLC two years ago and it is with sadness that we now bid her farewell as she pursues her interests at another J school , where she will I be able to teach Italian, her mother tongue. Paolo was appointed as Senior Years Coordinator and it is in this area that she hos directed most of her energy and initiatives. She also hod a number of Indonesian classes and her students will miss her a lot. She will be remembered for the Indonesian masks she mode so well w ith her classes during LOTE Week and for her commitment to the subject. Paolo accompanied a group of students of Indonesian when they travelled to Darwin at the end of 2004 for on Indonesian Experience. She enjoyed this opportunity immensely. We wish her well in her new position. Mary·Anne McCudden hos been at CLC since 1994. During much of this time she hos been the Religious Education KLA team leader, and she leaves us having been the Director of Faith Development for the lost two years. A gihed and inspiring Religious Education and English teacher, Mary-Anne is passionate about Literature and really loves a night at the theatre. One of the legacies which Mary-Anne leaves is Founder's Doy, which she started in 1997. It is gratifying to read the buddy letters to the incoming Year 7s for 2006 from this year's Year 11 , where many of them soy that Founder's Doy is the best day of the school year! Mory-Anne is a good source of anecdotes about her life. Hove you heard the one where she asked students if they hod anything appropriate to wear for the Good Friday liturgy - they said 'yes' and they turned up wearing fluffy ballet tutus? When Mory-Anne was newly arrived at CLC as a teacher, being on Old Collegian, when the music for the College Song struck up she song with gusto at her first College Assembly. No one else was singing! Now, with Mory-Anne's drive for school spirit, it is a very enjoyable finale to every College

Assembly. Mory-Anne soys that she hos found working with the College chaplains a real privilege, in particular Fr Peter Matheson and Fr Barry Coldwell. All your friends wish you well in your new role of Deon of Religious Education at Morymede Catholic College. Farewell to Morgana Walker We bid a very sad farewell to one of the liveliest staff members CLC hos had in the lost few years. While Morgano hos been integral in the teaching of Psychology, Science and Moths, she hos also been active in a range of co-curricular events throughout the college . We would like to extend our thanks to Morgano for her efforts in coaching sporting teams, assisting in College productions and concerts, raising funds for the Moira Kelly Children 's First Foundation and her many efforts in supporting student events. Some of these efforts included a cameo as Delta Goodrem and a Year l 0 student! We wish her all the very best for her new role in Special Education at Methodist Ladies' College .

Stephen Boyle hos been a Maintenance/Groundsman at CLC from September 1997 to June 2005 . As well as his regular work Steve dedicated a great deal of time to assisting with the annual College production . Making and positioning sets, setting up lighting , anything and everything else he was asked, Steve was always behind the scenes helping out in some way. He will be sorely missed in the Performing Arts area . We will all miss Steve around the College grounds and wish him well in his own business pursuits. Good Luck Steve! Andrew Howlett joined the P.E faculty this year under the AFL SportsReody Traineeship scheme . He hos proved to be invaluable to both staff and students alike . His easy-going manner hos meant that nothing he hos been asked to do hos been a problem . In fact, his favourite saying is : "Too easy". Drew hos coached many lnterschool sporting teams and was awarded the Cooch of the Year at our recent Sports Awards night. He hos encouraged many girls to get involved in physical activity and hos helped to run many carnivals. As the College hosted the lnterschool Tennis, Athletics and Sohboll, his help was invaluable. We would like to thank him for all of his efforts this year and we wish him well as he embarks on his next stage in life, which is hopefully studying for a Physical Education teaching degree.

During March 2005 the Year 11 s embarked on a journey that would show us an entirely different world to the familiar one we live in . So, forfeiting our environment and sociological safety nets, we moved into a world of responsibility and, heaven forbid, actual work. My four days spent at Rowville Health Clinic was an unforgettable time . I was placed with Myotherapists, Physiotherapists and Chiropractors as my ambition is to work in the field of Myotherapy. I spent my time watching the different methods of therapy, discussing possible treatment and learning some of the basic problems that a Myotherapist deals with . While I was there I learnt how to conduct myself appropriately in front of patients, and how to meet strangers without being shy. Most of the lessons I learnt whilst on work experience are things that cannot be taught in a classroom and I am sure that the other girls agree that these were very valuable lessons . From my discussions with my peers, I know that everyone believed that work experience was time well spent. Each girl has their own stories to tell , the funny moments, the big mistakes and many more new situations. We all agreed this was an enjoyable and memorable experience.

YEAR 11 TEAM LEADER REPORT Congratulations must go to all Year 11 students for making the decision and commitment to face the rigours of VCE. Students noticed a significant difference in their transition from middle school to senior studies. One of the obvious differences was the increased workload and higher expectations from teachers. The girls managed their time efficiently and were focused on achieving the best results they could through consistent and effective study and revision habits. Well done, girls! This year saw all Year 11 s participate in a number of worthwhile and character-building programs. As part of their commitment to serving the community, our students took time out from their schedules to assist in the 'Fitzroy Project' on Saturday afternoons throughout 2005 . The girls also donated generously to 'Project Compassion ', raised funds for Moira Kelly's 'Children First Foundation ' and gave bigheartedly to our annual 'Soap Collection'. I was also very proud of the contributions of the girls to the life of the College through participating in events including swimming, athletics, and team sports, Founder's Day, Debating and Performing Arts. 2005 was certainly a busy and exciting year for the Level. The girls got their first taste of full-time work during Work Experience Week, which took

Sarah Zanatta Year 11 student died 10 September, 2005. Sarah wrote this piece as part of an English writing task in early September, 2005. It is with the permission of her parents, Catherine and Paul, that we include her work in our 2005 Caritas. May her soul rest in peace.

place in early March . In late March, some of our Year 11 s were fortunate enough to travel to Germany for three weeks travel , where they were immersed in the German language and culture . April saw 'Elevate Education ' provide all Year 11 s with a half-day workshop on study skills. The girls also visited the Holocaust Museum in Elsternwick as part of their Reflection Day in May. During the June/ July holidays, three of our Year 11 s were selected to experience Aboriginal Immersion in Central Australia . The stories they shared with us upon their return to the College were remarkable. Throughout Semester One, our team of dedicated Homeroom Representatives, our two SRC Representatives and Shea Spitty ( 11 Ej and Annette Colautti ( 11 BJ worked tireless y to organise our Year 11 Formal, which took place on 15 July. I really admired the way the girls pooled their ideas and worked as one with minimal fuss and unconditional dedication to make the evening a success for all of our guests. Sincere thanks goes to all of you. Of course the year could not have run as smoothly as it did without the involvement and commitment of our wonderful team of Homeroom Teachers. I would like to thank Dr Jane Westerman ( 11 A) , Mrs . Alison Pharaoh (11 A) , Ms Tania McGuire (11 B), Mr. David Tod ( 11 C), Mrs. Suzanne Tobin ( 1 lD), Mrs. Julie Boyle and Mrs. Rene Varvaris (11 E)

So what about you? What are your hobbies? What's your lave colour? Who do you live with? What do you like? What don't you like?

Sarah Zanetta 11 E

VALE SARAH An open letter to a Year 7 student First of all, my name is Sarah Zanatta. I tell you this so that you don't have to skip to the end of the letter to see who is writing to you! I will begin by telling you a little bit about myself. My full name is Sarah Louise Zanella . My Confirmation name is John (Don) Bosco. I went to Our Lady Help of Christians Primary School in Elthom . In the middle of Year 6, my family and I moved to Swan Hill. In the middle of Year 8 we moved back, and that is when I started here at CLC! I was born on the 22 July, 1988, so I am 17. I like all colours. I do martial arts, which I love. I adore reading (I never stop!), spending time with my family and spending time with my friend 's three georgous dingoes. I do pretty well at school and I hope to become ~ a Paediatric (children 's) nurse or a Paramedic. I like playing drums, singing and acting . I can 't have lactose or red meat. I have no idea what size shoe I wear. Now I really am running out of things lo tell you about myself!

I suppose I had better tell you a little bit about CLC . It's a great school! The grounds are beautiful and the teachers are great (most of them anyway!). The classes are really interesting and trust me, you will have so much fun here! When I first started secondary school, I was terrified! But I loved it! Even if you don't know many people, you will make friends really quickly, because there are so many new people you will meet. You will soon learn your way around the building and if you ever get lost, just ask someone. Everyone's really friendly, they'll be happy to help you . The main thing I was worried about was switching rooms and sub "\ects throughout the day, but its actually real y easy! The best thing is that you switch subjects before you have a chance to get bored. I doubt you 'll get bored though , because all the classes here really grab your interest! There are heaps of events here to look forward to, and heaps of groups to be involved in! Here are some groups according to interests: Reading - Book Club Sports - Aths and Swimming Carnival, lunchtime games and you can try out for various sports teams Trying to make the world a better place - Social Justice Group Playing games and meeting people - Circle of Friends Singing - Choir Music - Orchestra Acting - Try out for the production

and Mrs. Janel Deller (11 F) for their ongoing support and significant contributions to life at Year 11. I could not have survived without their generosity and patience. This year we have faced a number of challenges both individually and as a group; however, our strengths of character and genuine care and concern for one another have seen us through . I will never forget the way this Year level worked to support one another in times of great need and sorrow. Sadly, my partnership with Year 11 , 2005 has come to an end . It has been my verf great pleasure to lead this group and I wil miss the wonderful experiences we have shared during the past two years and treasure every moment of both the serious and the ridiculous . Thank you all for being ... YOU. Winston Churchill once said, " You will make all kinds of mistakes: but as long as you are generous and true and also fierce you cannot hurt the world or even seriously distress her". Remember these words girls, as you go forth into the future . Treat each other as the precious gems you ore, always!

Sonia Fortini (Ms) Year 11 Team Leader

Editing , writing , photography - try out lo become a Magazine Representative Being a Leader - Apply to be on SRC rep or Homeroom Leader As you can see - heaps of stuff to look forward to! If you want to catch up during the holidays or before school starts just give me a call and we ' ll do something! Anyway until we meet again - Have fun!

Yours, Sarah Zanalla

Whispers on a Rainy Day The rain slides down The students saddened faces , Mixing with the salt tears of despair. Blood shot eyes stare into infinity Lost in a multitude of thoughts. Words are whispers Floating on the air Traces of normality on a day of misery. We sit together, in o distanced silence In a room of warmth and iove Holding each other against the darkThe candle scent masking the air. We stay together in the face of loss We keep each other strong . We pray for she who is gone, And cry for what is unchangeable . The darkness will pass, We will live again . She will never be forgotten. Our days will go on, And she will be with us As we hold each other Against the retreating dark.

Jacinta Fry With love from Year 11

INTER-SCHOOL SWIMMING CARNIVAL Last term on the evening of Tuesday, 29 March, the Annual Division One Inter-School Swimming Carnival was held ot Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre. The atmosphere was great, with each school cheering their swimmers on until they could cheer no more . Eight school s competed in the Carnival, and the competition was fierce . The schools represented were Genazzano College, Loreto Mandeville College, Siena College, Sacred Heart College, Star of the Sea College, Avila College, St. Columba 's College, who hosted the Carnival , and of course the ever so gracious Catholic Ladies ' College . Now, moving up from Division Two to Division One competition is a big step up, and our College is lucky enough to have some very talented swimmers . Even though overall our school finished 7th , with our Junior and Intermediate squads both finishing 7th in their section , and our Senior squad finishing 5th in their section , we had some standout swimmers in each section and swimm ing all different kind s of strokes . Courtney Gawne, Year 7 started us off in fighting style with finishing 3rd in the Junior l OOm Freestyle; also from Year 7 Emily McGenniskin finished 2nd in the 50m Freestyle (A) , and 3rd in the 50m Backstroke . Steffi Burns, Year 7 was 2nd in the 50m Freestyle (B) . From Year 9 Tegan French , was our star swimmer on the night, finishing 3rd in the l OOm Freestyle, l st in the 50m Breaststroke, and 3rd in the 50m Freestyle (A) ; also from Year 9 Tess Lane, finished 3rd in the 50m Freestyle (B) . From Year 11 Kate van Nugteren finished 3rd in the l OOm Freestyle and l st in the 50m Breaststroke (A) ; also from Year l l Marita Snipe finished 3rd in the 50m Breaststroke (B), and finishing 2nd in the 50m Freestyle was Cassandra Northrop . From Year 12 Katie O ' Neill fini shed a gallant 3rd in the 50m Freestyle, and Elizabeth Lamers finished 3rd in the 50m Backstroke. From the individual races to the team relays , in the Year 7 - 4 x 50m Freestyle Relay our girls finished 3rd, which is an amazing effort considering how hard it was to compete with the depth of swimmers from the other schools. As you can see from these outstanding results , our College has great talent of all ages! Fantastic effort girls!

e~ were 61SO'if'nl1mber of records broken on the day. Congratulations to the following girls:

GLEN ROY SPECIALIST SCHOOL It's amazing how lour days can change your perspective about thing s. At the risk of sounding melodramatic and cliched , Glenroy Specialist School truly did change my life and the way I think of people that society classes as 'disabled '. These child ren are beautiful in the true sense of the word. I was unimaginably lucky to be able to meet with them and the people who care for them every day through the community service program . Glenroy Specialist School has classes from Junior Primary right through to Transition which is the equivalent of years 11 and 12 . The students who attend the school have a variety of condition s so naturally some students require more one-onone care than others . When at the school I was fortunate enough to work in all of the year levels. I, along with the other students from CLC, participated in activities such as story time, music class , art class, singing lessons (luckily not too much talent was required in this area) and my all time favourite , swimming lessons. Swimming was one of the most incredible experiences I have ever had . There is an indoor swimming pool at the actual school, which is shallow enough to stand up in all the way through . The swimming lessons were taught by the very welcoming and funny Corrine . The ideas behind the swimming lessons were to build the children 's muscles, help them make use of their senses, build their confidence and above all give them some time to splash around and have fun. Believe me, these kids were little but they had no trouble splashing me in the fa ce many, many times. Swimming around supporting these children as they laughed and splashed around was amazing . It was especially rewarding to watch their confidence grow as they learned to trust you to support them around the pool. My favourite swimming buddy was Sammy-Jo who at one stage was convin ced that I was his mother but later settled for the fact that we were just good friends . The children at Glenroy are so beautiful and amazing . The teachers and carers who look after them every day are equally as wonderful. These people devote their lives to their students . They work astoundingly hard every day to help them learn and grow, and still manage to be nice to the confused, anxious schoolgirls who come and help them out. I owe so much to the students and staff of Glenroy Specialist School. The time I spent there has helped me expand my knowledge of people with impaired abilities and I hope I am a better and more accepting person because of it. I urge people to visit organisations such as this one and help those whose lives are more complicated than our own . I am sure all students I worked with will grow up to be truly amazing people and helping them become those people brings me a feeling of satisfaction ~ that no money or material possessions could ever create . For that I am eternally thankful.

YEAR 10 TEAM LEADER REPORT We are a community of one hundred and twenty-four students at Year l 0 this year. Each of us is unique and brings something special to share. We learn w ith and from each other. We began the year in anticipation and full of hope, determined that we would build on the successes of last year and leave behind the mistakes and follies . There was change, a new Year l 0 program , and we coped with that. There were challenges and struggles too , work wa s sometimes difficult, there were things we didn 't immediately understand or couldn 't

grasp, and there were new skill s and wa ys of doing things that had to be mastered : exams and a VCE unit. We have stumbled , and yet, each in our own way, we are learning to manage . There have been opportunities that we have embraced. Our community servi ce experience enabled us to give something back in loving service . We met new people who lived differently to us, and we were called to do thing s in ways that were unfamiliar. We learned to work cooperatively, and grew in independence and leadership . Choices have been made this year, carefully con sidered ones: the VCE subjects that will lead us into our futures. We have asked ourselves: who are we and how are we called to live and serve? What brings us life and how do we bring life to our community?

We will continue to ask ourselves these questions as we grow and change . We have celebrated and prayed together, competed and played together and we have supported one another with sensitivity and compassion . Where there has been conflict we have been learning to listen and understand. We are saying yes to life! We say thank you for our parents and our teachers. We give thanks for our Year l Os, a warm and generous group of students who are already helping to shape their world.

Anne Young (Ms) Year 10 Team leader

As two Year l 0 girls studying German , we'd never really thought about travelling to Germany. When the opportunity arose for girls to take part in a tour of Germany with the school , we jumped at it. When the day finally came around after many months of planning , all 21 CLC girls from Years 9-12 boarded the plane with butterflies in their stomachs and Frau Henderson and Frau McGuire by their sides. After the long plane trip , we hopped on a train and nervously waited to meet our host families in Passau . Most of the girls got along really well with their host sister, and felt at home in the family, although it was starting to sink in that we were actually on the other side of the world! Before we knew it we had already been to Passau and to Germany's capital , Berlin . In Berlin we stayed at a youth hostel and met heaps of new people from all over the world. Berlin was the ultimate place for shopping - as many of us soon found out! Our next stop was Gutersloh where we'd stay with our second host family and get the chance to go to a co-ed school! Many of us rode bikes to school in the wee hours of the morning in the freezing cold. We had to ride on the opposite side of the road so it was quite scary! Each time we left our families there would be tears flowing down our faces as the train pulled away, watching our host sisters wave white hankies good bye. For the last week of our tour we would be on our own private coach , travelling around as tourists and staying in youth hostels . A highlight of our coach tour was being guests at a party that a school in Rothenberg had planned for us . It was really good to meet more guys and girls our age . Before we knew it we were in Munich packing our suitcases, many of us stressing about how much they weighed with all the presents we had been given and things we had bought for our loved ones back home. Many girls still keep in contact with their host sisters via email and have formed unbelievably close friendships on the other side of the world! We are all very thankful for this amazing opportunity and without a doubt would recommend it to everyone! Aul Wiedersehen!

INDONESIAN IMMERSION EXPERIENCE PROGRAM IN DARWIN

YEAR 9 HAHN DORF TRIP 38 CLC German students completed their last week of Year 9 German in 2004 by travelling to Hahndorf, South Australia for a live day tour. A big " thank you " is extended to the exceptional girls who participated and helped make the tour such a wonderful success. The purpose of the trip was to learn first hand about the history of German settlement in South Australia last century and what better place to go than Hahndorf and the surrounding district. The students, accompanied by Frau Henderson , Frau McGuire, Frau von Moller and Ms Forchione (who was bestowed the honorary title of Frau Forchione for the duration of the tour) stayed at The Hahndorf Resort in Bavarian style chalets and the resort once again proved to be a very popular spot. On the first morning in South Australia we were officially welcomed and shown through the streets of Hahndorf by the Mayor before visiting the National Trust classified art studio and family home of the late Hans Heysen. Visits to the Beerenberg Strawberry Farm, Melba 's Chocolate Factory and the National Costume Museum all made an impression before dining out at the German Arms Hotel . The second day was spent in Adelaide where we visited the excellent Port Adelaide Maritime Museum and the fascinating Migration Museum before engaging in a girl 's most popular activity, shopping ! The Rundle Mall in the heart of Adelaide was fully approved by the girls as a shopping venue! The students also had a late afternoon stroll around Glenelg Beach before heading back to Hahndorf. The next day saw us travelling to the Barossa Valley where the students gazed in disbelief inside Herbig 's Tree, the home of a German settler and his wife for two years. A stop was made at the settlers' cemetery in Bethany, the oldest settlement in the Barossa Valley. An unforgettable highlight of the tour for Frau McGuire was finding the grave of her German great-great-great-grandfather, a man by the name of Christian Heppner. The girls enjoyed the German lunch at Lyndoch and the nonalcoholic wine tasting at Choteau Yaldara. It is hoped that the girls will long remember the activities undertaken on the 2004 German Heritage Tour.

Andrea Henderson (Mrs) Head of LOTE

On 29th November 2004 17 students studying Indonesian in Years 9 to 11 at Catholic Ladies College were offered the chance to take part in an Indonesian experience in Darwin. This enabled us to get a greater idea of Indonesian culture and climate and to help get a better grasp on the language in a rewarding five-day experience . Stepping out through the sliding doors at the Darwin Airport was like stepping into another world. Not only the heat but also the sheer intensity of the humidity blew everyone away. Driving into the city we could not believe how small Darwin was compared to Melbourne, and how many palm trees there were . The second day we went to the Northern Territory School of Languages, where we worked through a series of challenges that required us to use our knowledge of the Indonesian language . The highlight was the auction, where we were given fake Indonesian currency to purchase small souvenir items from Indonesia. We also got to try a variety of Indonesian food for lunch, such as 'nasi goreng' (fried rice) and 'kerupuk' (prawn crackers) . Day 3 saw us take a trip to the Darwin Botanical Gardens, where an Indonesian tour guide led us through the gardens, identifying many plants also found in Indonesia. We saw some areas of very beautiful rainforest that was likened to that of out northern neighbour, but by mid-morning every girl had cried out 'Cuoco ini terlalu panes don lembab' ('this weather is too hot and humid! ') so we left for the air conditioned Darwin Museum . Here we saw a variety of exhibits from a giant Saltwater Crocodile (stuffed, of course) to a large display of boats, many of which were Indonesian fishing boats . 'Tunas Mekar', the home of an Indonesian family, was our main destination for Day 4 . We were able to experience a range of Indonesian cultural activities. For our final day we drove out to the Northern Territory Wildlife Park. The Park contained many different animal species from those native to the Top End, such as the Saltwater Crocodile, to those introduced from countries like Indonesia. Our Indonesian immersion experience was not only an incredibly fun experience, but also one that aided me in my further Indonesian studies. If I never make it to Indonesia I hope I can return to the closest thing Australia has to it.

LOTE HAPPENINGS IN 2005 LOTE students at CLC applied themselves enthu siastically to their learning , became involved in many LOTE activities and met with success in their studies in 2005 . The locus of the first part of the year was the exten sive planning , followed by the three week trip to Germany for 21 students of German, Frau Henderson, Frau McGuire and the Principal , Mrs Margaret McKenna . Not only did the girls travel throughout Germany seeing the most notable tourist attraction s, they also became vi siting pupil s at two German schools and stayed with host families for several nights. One of the sc hools was CLC's sister school in Pa ssau , the Gisela School , which is also a Catholic school for young ladies. This was the first time that such a venture had been undertaken by students at CLC end the success of the program will ensure that the opportunity is offered again in the future to students of German . It was truly an amazing experience and the girls certainly improved their understanding of the German language and the culture . The thoughts of CLC's Indonesian students and teachers could not help but be with the Indonesian people alter the devastating Box ing Day tsunami which wiped out the province of Aceh. At the end of March , Puk Sil took hi s Year 11 class to an Indonesian Cultural Day, held at Melbourne University, to raise funds for the tsunami victims. The program started with a welcome speech from Proles:;or Ariel Budiman , Head of Indonesian Studies at Melbourne University and concluded with some very entertaining dances and wonderful music.

On 20 June the three Year 9 German classes travelled to Olinda for a lunch at the popular German restaurant, The Cuckoo. This excursion is always a firm favourite with the Year 9 students and this year's event was no exception. The girls enioyed the fun and entertainment as much as the tasty German style food . On 21 June it wa s time for the senior classes of German to view a German film at the cinema. The students saw the screening of " Rosenstrasse " at the Cinema Como in South Yarra and the film , subtitled in English, was highly moving . The impact of the film was strong because of the fact that the story was based an a true occurrence . At the end of June some new German exchange students were welcomed to the school. Li sa Oberlaender and Anja Eichler were the first to arrive, followed by Linda Auer and Svenia Hole . Lastly, the students enjoyed a visit by Johanna Hepp to CLC and all of these girls helped the students of German at CLC become more motivated about the learning of German . The Year l 0 Indonesian students had a memorable day in June when they went to the Indonesian Consulate, as well as to an Indonesian restaurant. The Indonesian Consulate was again visited on 18 August, Indonesia 's Independence Day. On that occasion the students of Indonesian in Years 11 and 12 attended the special ceremony. The students were then provided with an Indonesian lunch to celebrate . In August every LOTE student sat for the Australian Language Certificate testing and the LOTE teachers were very proud of the success the students had in the competition . LOTE Week took place at the beginning of

September and the week was full of exciting language activities including films , excursions, games, food sampling , cooking and performances by visiting artists . The year fini shed with the trip to Hahndorf, South Australia , for 37 of the Year 9 students of German. This year we stayed right in heart of Hahndorf and the trip wa s once again a fantastic educational experience. 2005 ha s been an unforgettable year for CLC's LOTE students and their teachers . Students and LOTE staff alike are sincerely thanked for their great contribution to the LOTE program at CLC.

For monyJeors the diocese of Melbourne hos celebrate Catholic Eduction Week around the feast of St Patrick. This began in the 1930s with the famous marches up Bourke Street which passed Archbishop Mannix. In recent times the week hos officially begun with a Schools ' Eucharist on that day in St Patrick 's Cathedral attended by groups representing all primary and Secondary schools. The liturgy begins with a most colourful procession of schools banners. This year CLC was represented by Emma Murphy, Som Hayes, Stephanie Boker, Chloe Stello, Alexandria Phillips, Soskio Hayes, Jacqueline Henwood, Nicole Milwoin, Ali Towers and Eden Clark. PRAYER OF BELIEF I believe in God the father who wrote the preface of my life. He makes me in his image yet unique in a world of millions. I believe in his son Jesus who come to earth to guide me through the most important chapter of my life. He taught me how to respect, to core and love. I believe in the Holy Spirit who lives within every man and woman. The Spirit is my world, my thought, my action , which is lived out in the paragraphs of my story. I believe in the church which is moved by the spirit, the church that is lived out through every chapter of my life, the church that welcomes me, teaches me forgiveness and the church that emphasizes community. I believe that in the epilogue of my story on earth, alter all my chapters hove been read , I will move to a life of eternal peace with God who created me.

A TASTE OF YOUR OWN MEDICINE! I couldn 't wait to go to the mountains. I was excited for about a year. My family never went on holidays . Mum always said we couldn 't afford them, but I thought she just didn 't want to go, especially when she had to leave the house . The holiday was in perfect timing too. It was my birthday in just three days and I couldn 't think of any other way to make it more exciting . I packed my bags two weeks before we left and I was constantly talking about the place to my friends (you could tell that they were bored out of their brains though!) Mum didn 't seem that wound up about the idea either. She really hated going camping . She didn 't see any reason for it. She always believed that it is a home for the insects and bugs and not humans, she also couldn 't stand the fact that she couldn 't do her hair or have a shower. According to mum , this would be the only time we would be able to drag her camping , so that is why I had to make the most of my trip. We arrived at the mountains on Thursday afternoon . We unpacked the car and set up the tent as quickly as possible . "Mum is already fussing ," I mumbled to Dad. "Hey, you, you do realize that I have ears! By the way, I wasn 't fussing , son . I'm just upset that I have already broken a nail and it hasn 't even been one day! " "Take a chill pill Mum . We can just buy a cheap pack of lake nails once we get home and I'm sure no one will notice ."

"What could you possibly be onto in the middle of nowhere, Dad? " "Stop being such a smartie pants, or I'll make you stay with your mother." We peered over a great boulder. A precipitous valley full of thin , lifeless trees and dense undergrowth was covering the ground like a thick carpet. This dreary atmosphere seemed to amaze Dad, so we carefully wandered our way down the steep hill like a pair of wild mountain goats. "You can do it, son . Don 't you worry! " It's not me I'm worried about Dad, it's you! You do seem to be going grey and you are missing a rather large patch of hair. " "Well , what is you point, boy? " " You ' re just not that young anymore, that's all. "Oh rubbish. I haven't even lived half of my life yet. Besides, it's just the light. I' m sure my head doesn't look like what you make it out to be." " Whatever, Dad, whatever. " At that moment I noticed a few large rocks sliding down the valley. They were coming straight for Dad and me. "Move, Dad, move! Landslide! ' I jumped into a nearby shrub for safety. I lay there, heart pounding. I thought of Dad . Where was Dad? I slowly picked up my head and gazed like a hawk for Dad . I couldn 't see him . "Oh no," I thought to myself, " he must be buried underneath the rocks. I have to get help. "

"You boys just don 't seem to understand the rules of being feminine, do you? "

I ran up to the hill, through the trees until I finally reached the campsite. I found Mum now fussing over having no place to plug in her curling wand and hairdryer.

Once dad and I had finished setting up, we left Mum to enter her girl world again.

"Mum , I can 't find Dad, I think he might be hurt! "

"We 'll be back before dark, Honey," cried Dad .

" Don 't be silly. Your lather could never hurt himself. This is ju st one of your practical jokes, isn 't it? "

Dad and I ventured off and explored the surroundings. We were climbing rocks and jumping broken branches. I was getting tired, I didn't think I had ever used so many muscles In my own life . An hour passed . I was nagging dad to go home, but the only response I got was "Shut up, Jordan. I think I am on to something ."

"No seriously. C'mon." "Oh all right, Mr. Grumble Bumbles ."

worried ." Oh , George, how could you? " Mum and I stormed off back to the campsite and left Dad in the valley. Dad eventually came and sat down by the lire. Mum and I wouldn 't say a word . We ate tea and then Mum and I zipped up the tent and continued ignoring Dad. When it was time for Dad to go to bed as well , he opened the tent and lay down . He started apologizing . I' m sorry, it was just a joke ." Mum and I didn't reply. We just lay there. At that moment I had an idea, so I gave Mum a signal to play dead . "Fine, good night. " He wondered why we didn't respond. He shook Mum, "Julie, Julie are you alright? " He checked her pulse, but he couldn't find it. He sat there in shock. That very second Mum said, "Ha, Ha, fooled you! " "Julie! " " What, I just gave you a taste of your own medicine! "

MY UTILE AFRICAN FRIEND What's wrong , my little African friend? Watching your people die . If I were there and you were here, I would want to cry. What's wrong , my little African friend? Weeping with hunger pain . If I were there and you were here, I would feel the same. What's wrong , my little African friend? Losing all your hope. If I were there and you were here, I don't know how I'd cope. What's wrong , my little African friend? Too young to understand . Watching family disappear, Like waves upon the sand. What's wrong , my little African friend? Wishing you weren 't you. If I were there and you were here, I'd be dying too.

I lead Mum into the valley, but we could not see him , only the solid outlines of the trees .

April Wilson SD

" Dad , Dad, " I called , but there was no response . "Where is he? If he is not here and he can 't hear us ..... hmm ."

WONDERING

"Darling , stop it, you are beginning to worry me". A small tear tickled down the side of her cheek . I gave her a hug .

Nice, friendly and funny. Do they like the rain or prefer it sunny? Do they follow footy and eat meat pies?

Suddenly a voice moaned : "Honey, is that you? "

Or stay inside and swear at the blowflies? Are they friends with their neighbours?

We searched around looking for the hidden voice. I found Dad under a small bush amongst a few trees.

Do they shop at Savers? Did they do well at school? Were they classified as 'cool'?

"Oh , George, here you are! Are you alright?"

So many questions,

A large unexpected cry poured out, "Fooled you! "

All go unanswered ....

" What a terrible man . You actually had me

Elissa Rontoni and Bianco Garzia As another year po sses, Catholi c Ladies' College was proud to enter 12 teams into this years Debater 's Association of Victoria competition , comprising of over 60 students from Years 9-12 . It wa s excellent to see on overwhelming number of girls from Year 9 getting involved in their first year of debating . We encourage these girls to pursue this interest in the coming years and hope they hove enjoyed participating in this year's competition . Teams l , 2 and 4 finished equal second in the Wotsonio Region , and Teams 3 and 5 fini shed third . Congratulations! This year, Year l ls were faced with a new challenge - The Secret Topic! The actual topic is not released until one-hour before the debate starts, during which time teams have to prepare their debate unaided. The topics were addressed with spirit and fought with gusto. CLC Team 2 is to be commended for their outstanding performance this year, finishing in an excellent second place.

At the time of writing , a house debating competition is being organised , to get the junior levels involved in on intra-school competition. This will be an excellent opportunity for the girls to improve their public speaking skills and develop the ability to work as a team, while gaining points for their house. This is sure to be a valuable and enjoyable experience and w ill motivate students to enter into the DAV competition in Year 9 . Congratulations lo all the girls for representing CLC so proudly. Your dedication and enthusiasm has certainly paid off and has seen another successful year of Debating at CLC.

Many thanks to Debating coaches; Ms Fortini , Mrs Maher, Mr McDonald, Mrs Oaten , Ms Pascalis, Mr Ramsdale , Mr Salmic, Mr Scorgie and Ms Smythe. Particularly, we must thank Public Speaker Co-ordinator, Mrs Dorgan. Without you the season could not hove run as smoothly and successfully as it ha s. Your encouragement, support, time and effort is much appreciated and such impressive debating would not have been possible.

This has been a year of emotional highs and lows for the College community and for the Parents ' Association , with our involvement in many projects in supportive, social and fundraising roles. We have involved ourselves in several fundraising activities including the running of the Trivia Night, which now seems to have become a permanent part of the College calendar of events. Once again , Rachid Imam was Trivia Master at the Annual Trivia Night, and once again he did a wonderful job. The numbers attending , as well as the funds raised , were both well in advance of previous yea rs . Our chocolate drive, although relatively successful , was disappointing in so far as having to continuously follow-up a small number of families who failed to return chocolates or money. However, we do congratulate and thank all those who supported this fundraising activity and assure you that our girls will benefit from your efforts and generosity. On a positive note, I am pleased to announce that it would seem that our efforts will result in our being in a position to hand over a modest increase in the amount of funds provided to the College . At time of writing , we are preparing for the second hand book and uniform sale. We are also in preparation mode for next year's fundraising activities. As part of this preparation The Parents ' Association is also reviewing its activities and discussing its future and direction and, as such, any thoughts from parents would be greatly appreciated. We would like to wish everyone much happiness for the upcoming Christmas and holiday period, and look forward to seeing as many of you as we can at various functions throughout next year.

THANK YOU TO THE PARENTS WHO WORKED AT THE MONTHLY BBQ DAYS

In 2005, the SOSE KLA saw curriculum changes to all year levels; in particular though were the changes evident in Years 9 and 10. These improvements were made largely as a result of our Middle School review, but gave us the chance to implement new, challenging and diverse topics. Year 9 students were exposed to three key areas throughout the year that also fitted into the themes that ran concurrently throughout the whole year level. The year began by studying The Yarra Valley. The highlight was an excursion exploring the regions including Warrandyte, Warburton , Mount Donna Buang and Domaine Chandon Winery. All of these students then competed in the National Geography Competition during Term 2. Later in the year, Year 9 students explored issues of civics and citizenship, in particular a new unit on the Victorian Jury System . Students explored their rights and responsibilities as citizens in a changing society. To finish the year the issues surrounding globalisation were explored, including the role of the United Nations and the growing problem of poverty in developing countries. This unit concluded with a focus on the 2004 Asian tsunami and the developments have taken place within a year since this catastrophic natural disaster. Meanwhile, in Year 10, all students were given a taste of SOSE subjects in first semester before electing to locus on more specific areas in Semester 2. Students were given the option of either a Societies and Environments based subject or a Business and Law subject. These changes have provided students with more rigorous and demanding content, while at the same time preparing them for the two years of VCE studies ahead of them. Once again , many students became actively involved in our SOSE week activities . This year saw the continuation of our daily quiz questions as well as the annual SOSE quiz on the last day. Students also had the opportunity to compete in the 'CLC Amazing Race' throughout the five days and guess the items in the 'Mystery Objects ' competition . Thank you to the dedicated SOSE stall for their enthusiasm and expertise and also to the students who have supported and actively participated in classes, excursions and activities this year.

Cain McDonald (Mr) SOSE KLA Team leader

ENGLISH Many wonderful and exciting activities take place in English classes and 2005 was no exception . Many students took part in a variety of competitions and the Debating teams did very well under the guidance of Ms Elaine Dargan . Toastmasters and Tournament of Minds showcased the many talents of the students . Students have had the chance this year to see Shakespeare at the theatre with the VCE Literature class attending a performance al 'Measure for Measure' at the Playhouse Theatre. In Book Week every year level had the chance to view a live performance from Oedipus Rex for the Year 12s to Bush Ballads for the Year 7s . Every student was able to enjoy a line theatrical experience . 2005 also saw the participation of a number of students from Years 7, 8 and 9 in the Australian English Competition . The experience for some of the girls was challenging but rewarding at the same time . 2005 has also seen the introduction of Extension Units for some students at years 7 and 8 . The girls enjoyed these lessons and certainly gained a greater insight into aspects of their English work. A special thank-you to Mrs Trish Smith for the time and effort she has put into these units. Another introduction this year to the College's English program has been the Literature Circles at Years 7 , 8 and 9 . The activities involved in this approach to reading are

both stimulating and worthwhile for the students. Term 3 saw the Year 1Os having the possibility of listening to a young Musl im woman , Randa Abdel-Fattah, who has just written a book based on her own experiences called , "Does My Head Look Big In This? " The girls found her story most interesting and were an appreciative audience. The Year 9 program has certainly been a challenging but beneficial one for the Year 9 students. They developed their skill s in teamwork and literacy, two very important components of any education for the 21st century. The displays produced by the various groups were excellent and reflected the very interesting and stimulating activities that had gone on in the classrooms. My thanks must go out to all those who have supported the study of English at CLC in 2005 , especially the very able and gifted teachers at each year level. My thanks must also go to the Team in Student Services for the very important work they do inside our classes , and in the resource they provide for us throughout the year. The work we have done in 2005 could not have been achieved without the untiring support of the Resource Centre stall who are always on hand to assist teachers in any way the{ can with resources, both in the areas o the print and visual media.

Doy at Melbourne Aquarium , Science Expo at RMIT, Endeavour 2005 Exhibition at Melbourne University and Project Lobcoot at the Austin Research Institute. Our successful involvement through student Ashlea Constance (Year 11) in the 2005 ANZAAS Science Youth Conference in Sydney was a highlight.

MATHEMATICS Throughout 2005 , the changes to the 2006 - 2009 Mathematics Course Design for VCE students hove become more evident. This hos meant staff members hove been required to embrace new technology and ideas in order to help prepare our students for these changes . CAS (Computer Algebraic Systems) will soon be port of oil students' mathematical vocabulary. Stoff members ore gradually becom ing more familiar and confident with this calculator, and hopefully they will soon be using this technology in the classrooms . The next 3 years will be busy with new programs and units of work being developed and written using CAS. During 2005 , 8 students from both Year 8 and 9 hove token port in Gomes Days . The Gomes Days provide on opportunity for students from many schools to participate in a series of moths games and problem-solving tasks . Many students from Years 7 to 9 were able to test their knowledge by participating in the NSW Mathematics Competition and once again , the year 7 students enjoyed a visit from World of Moths, where they worked in groups solving a variety of puzzles . It is great to hear that the girls ore toking advantage of the lunchtime tutorials offered by the Special Education Deportment. We encourage this commitment to learn ing . No doubt very the students find the benefits of giving up some of their lunchtime to study rewording.

SCIENCE 2005 hos offered many opportunities for our students to participate in meaningful learning , both within and beyond the Science classroom. The Science staff hos through their dedication , expertise, professionalism and enthusiasm , provided students with both engaging learning experiences and a Science program that is focused on providing students with a balance between the acquisition of scientific content, application of these concepts and insight into the Science issues encountered in the world today. Science hos seen many highlights this year, with many students becoming involved in the opportunities offered . Over 160 students participated in the Australasian Science competition , where 41 students were recognised and awarded for their outstanding achievements, while 50 VCE Chemistry students participated in the University of New South Wales Chemistry Quiz where excellent results were also received . Participation in Science Week this year with a thematic focus of Future Energy sow students and staff alike invest energy in raising the awareness of this important topic. Within Science classes , Year 7 students explored Wind Energy by making windmills and a wind measuring device, Year 8 students focused on Solar Energy and listened to on expert engineer discuss 5-stor energy efficient homes, Yr 9 students investigated the use of energy within the College, while Year 10 students discussed the use of Nuclear Energy. Beyond the classroom, the annual Science Competition, Slime making activity and array of competitions were on offer for students to involve themselves in . An opportunity to explore Science beyond the CLC classroom was a real focus this year. Many different students were given the opportunity to explore and participate in programs such as Morine Biology Careers

EXTENSION ENGLISH 2005 has seen the piloting of an Extension English Program at Years 7 and 8 with a focus on challenging the girls to think beyond the standard classroom curriculum. The texts used were selected to encourage the girls to take risks with their reading , writing and language skills. The girls who participated were invited to attend weekly small group sessions which allowed avid discussion on a broad range of themes. At the same time they were given the opportunity to share thei r work and learn with each other. Semester 1 saw the Year 8 girls participating in the program and Semester 2 Year 7s.

PEER SUPPORT REFLECTION In Sem ester l th is year a group of Year l 0 students were in involved in the Peer Support Program. Pairs of Year l Os are allocated a group of Year 7 s, whom they helped settle in and learn their way around the school. I think Peer Support really helped the girls to step out of their comfo rt zone and to meet new friends . We did lots of fun thing s including games, parties and some learning activities . I think this program was really worthwhile as we have formed lasting friendships and will remember th is time for the rest of our lives.

We went on an excursion to the Eltham Bookshops on the 12th of May to purchase new books for the Resource Centre. On this trip, the members were allowed to choose any book from the shelf that the library did not already own, and through this system we found literally stacks of brand new books for our library. The Book Club has written book reviews for the Intranet, so that students can read them and see some references to great books that we have read . The Book Club sets up displays for books of different themes in the library, like the Fantasy theme earlier of this year, or the recent theme, Diaries and Letters. This year's Book Week's theme was Reading Rocks, and was held from the 29th of August to the 2nd al September. There were quizzes and activities, and it was tied in with Engli sh week . There was a visit to the State Library, to see a dramatization of the book, "The Boy, the Bear, the Baron and the Ba·rd", and hear a talk by the author - Gregory Rogers . It was held on the 24th of August. An author, Randa Abdel-Fattah, came to the school and talked to the Year l Os, as well as some of the Book Club . She spoke about her new book, which is about a Muslim girl. The book is called , "Does My Head Look Big in This?" The Book Club thisJear was far big ger than it was last year. The members purchase quite a lot more books for the library, and everyone h<:d fun at the meetings.

YEAR 9 WOMEN'S HEALTH FORUM One of the highlights in the Yeor 9 PE/PD Program wos the Inaugural Women 's Health Forum at the conclusion of Term 2. The day was a culmination of the semester's work in Personal Development. The areas covered exposed students to many aspects of physical, social, mental and emotional health and enabled them to reflect on their lives and the hopes they have for the future. Students participated in various sessions throughout the day related to beauty, birth and childcare and nutrition and healthy eating . Students had the opportunity to give each other facials, learn how to apply make-up, cook (and eat!) healthy snacks, discover what was required to have a baby and how to care for infants and toddlers . The day concluded with an active session in the afternoon where students participated in a new and dynamic fitness activity. Choices available to students were self-defence, pilates , yoga , tai chi, aerobics and massage. Students approached the day with enthusiasm and a willingness to learn and were rewarded with a show bag containing products and information related to the various sessions offered throughout the day.

Congratulations ta Victoria Parkes (Year 10) for her recent equestrian success at the Victorian State Championships in Rosedale on 30 April and 1 May. The two-day event covered three disciplines - dressage, showjumping and cross-country. After an impressive dressage test and clean showjumping round, Victoria found herself in second place at the end of Doy One. Day Two sow the cross-country phase and at the end of competition she had held her second place. This fantastic result means Victoria has been selected to compete at the National Championships to be held in Perth later this year. Well done Victoria!

On Tuesday July 21st seven girls from CLC, nine from Our Lady of Sion and three teachers, along with Pauline Clayton, travelled by plane to Central Australia . Our destination , after two plane rides and four plane delays, was Angatja , a campsite about four hours south , by corrugated dirt road , from Uluru. We were on aboriginal land owned by the Pitjantjatjara people. The next day we travelled to the most remote school in Australia , the Murpurtja Nyapari school, where we were greeted by students and had the priviledge of meeting members of the Community. Over the next few days we were involved in many cultural activities such as making and using clapping sticks and hunting for Maku (witcherty grubs). We heard the trioal songline (creation story) of Wati Nigntaka, the lizard man, and learned the dance, the traditional way of passing down Tribal laws and history. When we moved to the next campsite Ngarutjara , Peters Place, we learnt the songline of the Seven Sisters. That night, camping in a dry river bed, one of the Sion girls Dani, celebrated her 16th birthday with a candlelit damper. The days spent at Uluru and Kata Tjuta were also a highlight of the trip. There we discovered how the indigenous people regard these places as very sacred sites with many Creation Stories attached to them . Each of us benefited immensely from this experience in many different ways, but mostly learning about the indigenous people and their culture has left us with many lasting memories.

This year has been a very exiting and action packed year for the Social Justice Group . We got off to a great start with many of the junior students participatin g in the annual Clean Up Australia Day and the collection of stationery for students of an East Timorese School. We were also privileged to have guest speakers from World Vision and Fairwear, who were very inspiring in sharing their knowledge on what we can do as a community for the benefit of others. Once again many students, from all year levels, participated in the World Vision 40 Hour Famine, bravely giving up food, technology and in some cases furniture , to raise money for some of the poorest people in the world. Congratulations to all girls involved , as you all did a fanta stic job for a wonderful cause! For a few of the senior members, the Amnesty International All Schools Justice Day was a great opportunity to share ideas with other students from around the state and to spend a day listening to some excellent guest speakers and participate in various workshops . Kaitlin Smith and Alexis Agostino also attended the World Vision Youth Leadership Convention where they spent a weekend participatin g in workshops, learning about the work of World Vision and discovering what it is like to be an aid worker. The sale of "Make Poverty History" Bands has proven to be very popular amongst the students. Their overwhelming support has raised a substantial amount of funds and awareness for Caritas Australia . Term 3 found the group in the kitchen making food to be sold at the very successful cake stall to raise money for the Indigenous Student Fund at Northland High School. August 26th was the Tampa Anniversary Rally, for which many of the group braved the cold to protest the end of mandatory detention and show their support for increased rights for refugees. Once again, we had many students participate in the Fitzroy Project, giving their time out of school to help out in the Soup Kitchen. Thank you also to all staff involved . Thank you to all of the members of the Social Justice Group for your hard work this year. It is inspiring to see so many girls with so much passion and commitment to improving the lives of others. Thank you also to Mrs . McCudden who has dedicated much of her time to helping the group . Thank you also to Mrs . Tobin and Mr. Dalton and all other stall involved for your support, which is greatly appreciated.

YEAR 9 OUTDOOR EDUCATION CAMP Early morning on the 15th of Morch , the Year 9s set off on a bus to Eildon , for what was going to be four days of fun , experience and adventure. We were going on survival camp. When we got there we sat on the grass at our home base. We all met our group leaders and we played some 'get to know you games' . While we were at the home base, we were issued with a big backpack that we had to fit ALL of our stuff in . That wa s a nightmare because having all our equipment in our bag, including the group's cooking utensils and food , meant that we had to carry it all the way to our camp sight. The students could choose from two nights or three nights out in the bush. The girls who picked the two nights slept at home base for one night out of the three . Our group chose the three nights. Before choosing this we didn 't realise that our group would be walking 26km up and down steep hills in those very few days . Not only did we have to walk all that way, we also had to find our own way there using a compass . We were very lucky to have 2 full days of river rafting . Stephanie, our Outdoor Education Guide leader and Mr. Scorgie our teacher, joined in the fun of rafting by jumping in the icy cold water with us . Some of the other activities that the other groups enjoyed included high ropes , bike riding and bush walking. At breakfast, lunch and dinner, we had students prepare the meals and then some others to clean up for us . We also had to set up our own tents and dig our own toilets, with only a shovel. We pretty much had to do everything ourselves . It was a hard few days with no shower or real toilet but yet it was a great last camp . It was the best camp we have had in our school years.

YEAR 9 TEAM LEADER REPORT As I reflect on the year, I feel privileged to hove mode the journey with the Year 9 students and om tinged with sadness as we soy farewell to them . Students entered Year 9 with a certain amount of trepidation about the new middle school program . However, they willingly took on board a new way of working and learning . In fact, they are now quite the experts when it comes to collaborative learning and problem solving . The wonderful co-curricular program made it a memorable year. The Outdoor Education Comp saw the girls departing with mixed feelings, yet they returned to school extremely proud of their achievements, which for some was quite challenging . Another highlight was the Year 9 Social. The night was a great opportunity to make new friends from Parade College, Marcellin College and Whitefriars College. A variety of guest speakers visited the College as port of the Pastoral Core Program . These included a theatrical group who dealt with issues very relevant to adolescents and also the women 's health forum organised by the PD staff. Four Year 9 students went on the trip to Central Australia which was a wonderfully memorable experience . They returned with real a sen se of justice for all and were challenged by many unanswered questions about the living cond itions of our indigenous people. I am constantly in awe of the varied talents of our Year 9 students. Many students were acknowledg ed for their achievements in performing arts, sporting arenas, leadership, academic prowess and other areas. Special thanks goes to our Year 9 SRC Representatives, House Captains and Class Representatives who have willingly served their fellow students . Importantly, the real measure of success lies in who the students become as people and also their innate goodness. To the students who ore not acknowled ged for their positive influence on the lives of others, your contribution has not been overlooked . Finally, I express my sincere gratitude to the Year 9 Homeroom Teachers for their support, enth4.siosm and endless amounts of energy. They willingly gave of their time and showed genuine care and concern for the students and their well-being . It has been an honour being part of the Year 9 team . ~

Founder 's day is what we celebrated on Friday the 22nd of July. This day was full of excitement and games because the whole school was celebrating the day this school was founded . The Year 7s did a coin race where they had to put it in a line and see who got the furthest. 7C won the race . They also did a dance-a-then, which was fun. While the Year 7s were having a fun time the Year 9s did a breakfast/karaoke morning. All girls were having fun in singing along to their favourite songs played by Mr. Mac. Year 9s even begged him to sing a song, which he did! As the year nine's were doing that, Year 1Os were building a house out of straws and toothpicks without falling so it could fit a person in it. They had a great time because they laughed at their friend 's houses falling down! The Year 11 s had a breakfast that was a blast. While they were eating their breakfast, they were viewing their formal photos, which were very nice. Then all the year levels set off far lunch with the Milo van and had pizza, meat pies, icy poles and a refreshing fizzy drink. Everyone almost thought it was over but .......... There was the HOUSE TRIVIA CHALLENGE!!! The hosts were Miss Smyth and Mr. Mac . It was really fun because everyone was included . There were some games like eating the doughnut off the string and how many apples can you get from the bowl. There was "Guess Which Teacher Owns The Object" and "Guess The Picture " . The winning house was MARITA!! I think everyone had a good time because it was FOUNDER'S DAY!!

It hos been a very busy and productive year in all of the Technology subjects. The subjects that make up this diverse area include, Food Technology, Materials Technology, Systems Technology and Information Technology. Year 8 students rotated through a variety of Arts/Technology subjects and had the chance to experience at least one of Materials, Systems or Food Technology. Each term students focussed on a theme and completed work related to the overall theme. In Materials Technology students created fan powered cars with variety of interesting shapes; in Systems Technology students created music boxes incorporating lights and sound and in Food Technology students cooked up a vast array of appetising dishes . Year 9 students have had very different experiences of Technology. Some students have used the computers to record and arrange their own music tracks. Some used computers to design three-dimensional wall hangings, which were then created from wood, and finally a plastic mold was created. Others planned restaurant menus and cooked foods from around the world. In Year 10 students elected to complete studies in different areas of Technology. This included learning how to prepare documents for Business in a variety of Microsoft packages, learning different programming languages to create Web Pages and Animation and a variety of cooking and preparation methods to cook up a storm. In Years 11 and 12 Food Technology is a popular choice for many students. Students build on their skills in the preparation of food and learn advanced techniques for the cooking of foods . The smell of freshly baked foods and cooked meals regularly drifts throughout the building. All students have completed work they can be proud of and hove been exposed to the vast variety on offer in the Technology area . This would not be possible without the creativity, patience and expertise of our dedicatea Technology teachers, Mrs Falvo, Mrs Major, Mrs Maynes, Mr Pearce and Mr Tod . I would like to thank each of them for making each students experience enjoyable.

City Experience Reflection Early in the morning, When it's cold and dark I wake up and get ready For a new journey to embark. Squished up amongst strangers Sta ding on the train • arrive at our station Leaving others to remain. We gather at the old church hall And check if all the girls are here We are about to begin our adventure Without a frown and without fear. The fo of us alon Wanderl a narrow o d hectk Slrfft

I' carious t think of what we wlll see Anti whom we will meet.

It's lunchtime already And it feels like we just begun, But I suppose time flies When you're having FUN! So many people, So many places, So maay ottractlons y rocesl So This city is extraordinary So much to do and so much to see Chinatown, Fed. Square, The Rialto! Melbourne, That's me! The day is almost over, It has been a blast! I wish I could repeat It And bring it back from the past.

As part of our school work in Yeor 8, We had City Experience, which turned out great At first it was dull because all we did was writing But as the days went on it became more exciting We travelled by train into Melbourne Central Station Where the teachers gave us helpful information We were then led to a different place Where we would come every morning ; this was called 'Base .' The teachers informed us what we were going to do And told us to be back at 'Base', right on cue. It was then time for my group to leave the church Find some buskers and start our research . The first busker we saw was drawing with chalk. We gave her some money and started to talk. There was another busker playing guitar, I thought she was the best performer by far. The next day was Tuesday, we caught another train , We were going into the city again. We decided what our tasks would be And we strolled around happy and free . City Experience was a fun , exciting treat Even if you caught a tram down the wrong street! So I hope that you enjoyed my rhyme And I would do City Experience again , anytime .

and I didn 't have a care in the world. Except for one small problem , Bruce McGee. He had the appearance of a Neanderthal. Big hands, big muscles and enough hair to go around the whole school , twice! Ever since that experience at the pool in 1998, Bruce has never let me live it down. I walked into the school gates and took a big deep breath. Today was the swimming sports and I wa sn't at all looking forward to it. The last time I had been in a pool was at the swimming sports back in 1998 . I was in the diving team and I was standing on the live metre board ready to dive. What a mistake. I got so scared that I wet my pants, slipped on the wet board and fell off the plank landing in a belly-wacker on top of the pool. If I hadn't become so nervous, I could have ended up with a ribbon -instead I had nothing but a red lace. Ever si nee then I have been too scared to even look at a pool. But this year wa s going to be different. I was once again in the diving team and this was the year to stand up to my fears and take the plunge! The buses were loading , so I ran to the nearest one and sat down in a vacant seat. As I started to get myself comfortable , Bruce McGee walked past." Gonna embarrass yourself again this year, twerp? " he smirked as he made his way to the back of the bus. I ignored him and continued calming myself. About twenty minutes later we arrived at the Sydney Sports and Aquatic Centre. I followed everybody else into the arena . Almost immediately I saw the diving board that I would soon risk my entire social life on. I got changed into my togs and made my way up the stairs to the live metre diving board. "There 's nothing to worry about," I thought to myself. " It w ill all be over in an instant. " I stepped up onto the wet board . Wow, my knees and hands started to shake. What a time to have second thoughts. I should have never forced myself into it. I looked down at the cheering crowd below. I knew that I had made a big mistake. The crowd suddenly seemed to go quiet, except for Bruce shouting , "Don 't mess it up loser! " Once again I ignored him and began to concentrate on my dive. The clock was ticking and I knew that I had to make my decision . Should I take the plunge, or be an outcast for the rest of my life?

BRUCE, GET LOST!!! What a time ta have second thoughts . I should have never forced • myself into it. I looked down at the cheering crowd below. I knew that this was a big mistake. It all started off as a normal day at Sinders High . The sun was shining , the birds were singing

I walked to the end of the board and gripped my toes on the edge . I thought to myself "Bruce isn't going to control my life! " I then crouched down and flipped myself backwards into the air, did a double somersault and landed in the water. I immediately broke to the surface and looked around at the stunned crowd. The arena quickly filled w ith cheering and I quietly said to myself with a smile, "Bruce, get lost!!! "

YEAR 8 TEAM LEADER REPORT The theme for Year 8 2005 is "The Me I'm Learning To Be ". Our students have been challenged , have had the opportunity to try new things and learn from a variety of experiences. I too have had the opportunity to learn and grow with them . The Year 8 Team - students and stall have embraced our theme. As the year draws to an end, I think back to all the challenges and change we have laced and I smile. I have been blessed with an amazing group of girls to work with in my role this year and I would like to sincerely thank all of them for challenging me, smiling and letting me be a part of their growth and experiences this year. I would like to thank the Year 8 Team for their support and dedication to our girls : Brian Pearce, Laura Forchione, Seamus Scorgie, Debbie Willoughby and Diana Randazzo . As a team we have been able to provide our girls with an opportunity to explore a variety of curriculum areas, join in the adventures of the City Experience Program and provide the opportunity to take up the many challenges of cross country skiing . As a year level we have been well represented in many areas of the College programs . Girls have been involved in Sport, The College Concert, Tournament of Minds, Social Ju stice Group and many other activities that have been offered. Thank you to all the girls who gave up their time and energy for our college programs. Without any doubt, this year has been an exciting adventure for all of us. The roller coaster has been flying hard and last and the ride has been memorable. Thank you to our families who have shown so much support throughout the year - you have blessed us with an amazing group of young women . I encourage all the girls to indulge and enjoy in all the adventures 2006 has to offer. Thank you again for sharing so much of yourselves with me this year and all the best for the future .

Simone Cymbalak (Ms) Year 8 Team Leader

The very beginning of my high school years began on Friday the 28th of January 2005 . After arriving at the crowded grounds of CLC my mum and I hauled two bags completely filled with books to my new classroom 7E . I said goodbye to my mum and then waited with my new classmates for our homeroom teacher, Mrs . McKiterick. After introducing herself, Mrs McKiterick gave us new combination locks and a locker number. We tackled the task of learning to crack our combination codes, which took a lot of effort and brainwork. It was very exciting to get our own combination locks with their own codes!! During lunchtime of our first day at school , our Year 12 buddies greeted us with an icypole. They gave us a quick tour of the school and then took us up to Currajeen for lunch . On the bell of the fourth period the Year 7 and 12 students parted into groups of tables in the College Hall. We all participated in a Trivia Questionnaire and, even though my group didn 't do so well, I had a lot of fun and enjoyed my very first day of attending CLC. On Monday our proper classes began and we were each given a timetable to let us know what subjects we would be having at certain times in the week. At first the timetable was extremely confusing with us trying to figure out how the timetables worked . However, as the day continued on , it began to make sense, or at least some. Our swimming carnival was held on Wednesday. We caught the bus to the Melbourne Sport and Aquatic Centre . Once settled , the day sprang into life and the events started . I entered two events for the day, the 25m freestyle and the novelty race. At the beginning of the first race I was feeling very nervous and tense. Everyone would be watching!! When the horn sounded I was off, and in what seemed like seconds the race was over!! I was handed a third place so I was pretty happy. In the novelty race we were also placed third . Apart from the cold , wet weather I had lots of fun and it was fantastic to see everyone in their house colours . The swimming carnival was definitely the highlight of my week. I love everything about CLC and look forward to spend ing my secondary school years here.

SCSA HOCKEY On Tuesday, 21 June, the annual SCSA Division One Hackey Tournament took place at Foatscray Hackey Grounds . It was a beautiful day for competition and the girls were read{ ta play. The schools competing consisted o St Columba 's, Sacred Heart Geelang , Sacred Heart Girls College, CLC and Clonard. The day was a round robin tournament, with each team playing each other once, and the team who finished on tap at the end of the round robin , winning the tournament. Our junior girls team played extremely well and kept a positive attitude right throughout the day. We finished in a fantastic 2nd place in the end behind St Calumba 's College, who came out on top quite convincingly.

3rd Row L-R: Simone Azzopordi , Caitlin Ward , Rachel Bartlett, Emma Lydiate 2nd Row L-R: Jemma Matthews, Naomi Jardine, Jodie Barns, Olivia Dickson Front Row L- R: Anna Feeney, Madeleine Shelly, Rachel Walson , Claire Smoorenburg Absent: Eden Clark, Stephanie Livingstone

Our senior girls, however, went one better and actually finished the tournament in 1st place, w.hich was a great effort, especially considering we had to come from behind in the final game to take the points and the tournament trophy home as Division One Champions! A fantastic effort to all girls who competed , and also a big thank you to Mr Scorgie and Ms Beaston , who gave up their time to coach the girls .

For the first time this year golf was introduced as a competitive sport at CLC. The selection process for the Golf Team was guile tough , with lessons on Tuesdays and Thursdays to hone our skills and finally nine holes to show our talents . For a lot of us it was our first time we had even picked up a golf club and believe me it is not as easy as it looks in Happy Gilmore! With all the practice under our belts we were ready to take on the world , or at least the other Catholic girls' school at Goonawarra Golf Course, Sunbury. So the morning of 7 March · came along ; like all golfers we were up early, poli shing our clubs and focusing on the task that lay ahead of us. We met at school at 7 :30 am ready and raring to go. The team consi sted of four team members: Christine Oltvay, Megan Lamont, Emma Lydiate and Stephanie Audley. Mrs Morgana Walker and Mrs Carmel Audley drove us to the golf course , they both had their own ways of trying to rev up the team . Lines like " hit it long and straight" and " block out the crowd s and focus on your own game" were used . By the time we got there we w ere in the zone and ready for anything the opposition could throw at us . We were very nervous but played extremely well on a very long and tough course . Christine Oltvay finished second in the handicap event and was only narrowly beaten . Well done, Christina. The rest of us in the team exceeded both our own and the coaches ' expectation s. With a very young team this year I am sure that golf at CLC will only get stronger so I encourage all students to try out for the team , becau se a fantastic day was had by all. Well done girls!

i1Ml9Ye91'.JO~ . .I09 met~ witneu firsthand how evolving technology 1s allowing us to be more creative and more independent from the printers. With the introduction of a new computer pack<1ge, Adobe lndesign, we are now able to do a larger amount of the magaz·ne ourselves. This enables us to have such benefits as additional pages, and a greater percentage of pages in full colour.
