A Word From the Principal

This year for the first time we celebrated Founders' Day at Catholic Ladies' College. We heard the story and celebrated the memory of the courageous women of faith who began the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity, those who crossed the seas from Ireland in 1838 to bring their ministry of love and service to the convict women of Sydney, and those who in 1902, founded our College.

This celebration of our story and our heritage became as well a celebration of our life as a community and the faith that we share with our founders.

Our story is a continuing and ever-changing one. This year the College Board, by commissioning a Strategic Plan for the next five years, has charted a course for our College into the next millenium. That plan will enable us to meet the educational needs of our students in the changing world of the 21st century, and to continue the mission of the founders of our college to educate young women to be leaders in society and the church, imbued with a sense of justice and inspired by the spirit of love. By making available to the college in 1999, the beautiful building Currajeen, now used as a Retreat Centre, the Sisters of Charity are showing once again their love and care for Catholic Ladies' College and their faith in its future. Their motto "Caritas Christi Urget Nos" continues to be our inspiration.

1997 Student Representative Council

1997 has been an extremely busy and challenging year. As I look back on the year, I feel a sense of pride and sadness that it has come to an end. My role as S.R.C. President has made 1997 the most fulfilling of all the six years I spent at Catholic Ladies' College.

Friends will vouch that at times, the stresses of trying to manage my role as school president and the hectic nature of V.C.E. meant that occasionally I thought I was experiencing a personal crisis. However, there were many teachers and students who offered endless amounts of support and for that, I am eternally grateful. Firstly, I'd like to thank Ms Bassett for her encouragement and complete support and assistance, the two Vice-Presidents Sharon Ghraiche and Sarah Fox, Mr Morgan for his constant reassurance and invaluable guidance, Miss Ryan and Mr Blake for endless amounts of encouragement, and Mrs Saunders, Mrs Ryan, Mrs Hosking, Mrs Selleck and Mrs Garbutt for their obliging assistance at the office. I would also like to thank the S.R.C. representatives for 1997, who through their willingness to help and attt:ndance at meetings made my job so much easier, in particular I'd like to thank Stephanie Puls who offered me more support and assistance than anyone this year and whose kind and encouraging words I really appreciate.

The 1997 Student Representative Council ran successful fund-raising activities such as 'Jeans for Genes Day' to raise money for research into genetic diseases in children. Through this activity, we raised approximately one thousand four hundred dollars and I would like to thank everyone who got involved.

We also ran 'Sun Day' a fund-raising activity to raise money for the Anti-Cancer Council, and raised approximately seven hundred dollars for the organisation. Again, I'd like to thank all those who got involved.

When I look back on the year, the one important aspect that sticks out in my mind is the Talent Quest. In the 1997 S.R.C Talent Quest held on Founders Day, we witnessed some of the most impressive displays of talent ever seen before at Catholic Ladies College. Here, a special mention must go to Lauren Nicholas, Sharon Ghraiche, Jessica Esposito and Laura Pianezzola for their act 'Hey girls, want some Pitta?'. It was an outstanding performance and one that helped to make this years Talent Quest, to quote many teachers and students: 'The best Talent Quest Ever!'. Again, I'd like to thank everyone who entered the Quest and made the day a very enjoyable one.

As my final year at C.L.C draws a close, I'd like to congratulate and wish Kate Moloney the best of luck for next year in her role as the 1998 S.R.C President. I'm sure that she will receive the same amount of encouragement and support from her teachers and friends as I have. Finally, I'd like to thank everyone for giving me this opportunity to represent the school and develop important leadership skills that will assist me for the rest of my life and I wish you all the very best of luck in the future.

Mrs Margaret Cross The diminutive energetic figure of Mrs Cross busily organising sports carnivals or netball teams or most other forms of sport at C.L.C. will be missed greatly when she retires at the end of this year.

When Mrs Cross was asked to reflect on her time at C.L.C. she made the following observations.

"I started teaching at C.L.C. in 1974 and worked part-time until 1984. In that year I taught full time but again went back to part-time teaching until May I 991. I again took up a position of full time teaching to try to fill the void left by a loved and respected friend and colleague - Janette Clarke who died suddenly.

I have seen many changes during the 24 years I have taught at C.L.C. 'Change Rooms' in the seventies were the Dining Room and the P.E. staff also had their working desks in this room! The first running track at C.L.C. was a strip of land where the gymnasium now stands. Then the blackberries and scrub were cleared from where our current oval exists but initially a smaller oval was established where rabbits with myxomatosis were often seen running through our 100 meter sprint races. This original oval was then extended to a full sized track and side areas cleared for long jump and throwing events. Our gymnasium has been the greatest addition for the P.E. in the school. On wet days you often see over 60 enthusiastic students playing volleyball in a 50 minute lesson I am looking forward to retirement and would like to thank Miss Ryan, Mr Blake and Mrs Willis for letting me stay so long and to my good friends in the P.E. office -Debbie, Celia, Debbie and Annette for their ever ready support and friendship. To all the students I have loved teaching you and have fond memories over the years of you all. I will miss you all"

Miss Kitchen has been with C.L.C. for just twelve months and during that time she has won the hearts and admiration of staff and students. A talented musician herself she has worked tirelessly with the music students preparing them for the school production, band performances and her B-natural choir. We will miss her dedication and gentle manner. We wish her well for the future.

Miss Niki Hassold Miss Hassold has taught pottery at C.L.C. for the past three terms.

During that time she held a very successful exhibition of her own work which reflected her love of bright colours and ability to create joyful work. We wish her well I for the future and look forward to her future exhibitions with great anticipation.

Mrs Suzanne Tobin We will also be farewelling Mrs Tobin who has so ably taught Humanities and R.E. as a replacement teacher in second semester. We wish her well and thank her for her work at C.L.C.

Mr Andrew Berzins Mr Berzins has to be one of the best, funniest most

inspiring Chemistry teachers to ever grace the grounds of C.L.C. With his keen interest in sherbet, and his finesse in making Home-brews he made his classes both exciting and informative. He left with respect and dignity (along with two bottles of red wine) always to be remembered by his Chemistry class of'97.

Congratulations to Ms Simonetti who has recently become engaged and who will be leaving to live in the country. She will be missed greatly by her classes who enjoyed her imaginative lessons.

Mrs Ruta Kenny During the year we farewelled Mrs Ruta Kenny who has taught at C.L. C. since 1976. When Rachel Nolan asked her thoughts and fee lings about C.L.C. she made the following observations.

Mrs Rosemarie Stynes During the earlier part of this year, C.L.C. said goodbye to another wonderful teacher and an amazing artist - Mrs Rosemary Stynes.

When Mrs Stynes came to C.L.C. in 1976 as a fill-in teacher for one term, little did she know that she would continue to be a member of the C.L.C. faculty for the next 20 years.

What impressed you most about C.L.C.?

The atmosphere - the external environment - the beautiful grounds, trees and surroundings. - the people - their friendliness, both the staff and students - the curriculum - how it is always developing and improving - the spiritual nurturing and growth of students.

She played an active role within the school community over the years by, not only being an exceptional ceramics teacher, but also by attending school camps for Year 7 and year 9 students which she " loved ' and "thoroughly enjoying" the infamous Year 11 Central trips on two occasions.

What subjects have you taught?

History (my favourite), Geography and I have also taught Music. I taught the HSCN.C.E. subject Australian Studies when it was first introduced. 1 like to teach subjects that broaden one 's aspects of humanity, that deals with people.

Why have you decided to leave?

I want to travel to places like Prague, Siberia and other parts of Europe. Because of my Lithuanian background I want to visit relatives there and help the people by teaching English or working as a translator for some company. I also hope to do courses in technology.

How do you feel about leaving Australia?

Well l will have to give up a very nice comfortable house to live by myself in a fl at in Lithuania. I will miss my daughters, my grandchildren and all my friends. But I may be able to help my people and also bring back to Australia new skills and experiences. It is hard to leave C.L .C. as it became a large part of my life.

What advice do you give to the students of C.L.C. I will never forget you.

We wish Mrs Kenny well and we will all miss the wonderful breadth of her knowledge, expertise and involvement with the students.

There have been many memorable events durin g Mrs Stynes ' years at C.L.C; one of the most precious in her mind being the 25 year celebration at the College. Other events include the visual Arts Shows, School Plays, religious celebrations - particularly a beautiful Easter Passover celebration - th at Mrs Stynes recalls from a couple of years ago.

She supported and encouraged many of her students to participate in the Eltham Youth Art Shows with many of her students winning awards. Her own work has also been in various art shows including Eltham College, Scotch Co llege, Carey Grammar, and Ivanhoe Grammar.

Mrs Stynes has decided to retire in Blairgowrie with her husband and to continue doin g her own work. She will be dearly missed by both staff and students and we all wish her every success in th e future.

Anne Green - A Remembrance On the third of August 1991 Mrs Anne Green passed away suddenly. The many students she taught and the love they still have for her is expressed in the following poem. Anne was a young energetic art teacher and member of the library staff, we all still mourn her sudden death .

Eileen Ryan - A Remembrance Eileen Ryan entered eternal life on July 2nd, 1997, after a lengthy illness. Because of her illness, Eileen retired from her position as assistant to the business manager at the end of 1996 after seven and a half years of dedicated service to the college.

There is no member of the college staff whom Eileen had not touched in some significant way, as she had the rare gift of being able to make each person an important part of her own life. Noted for her energy, her sense of fun , and her zest for life, Eileen had what has been described as a deliciously wicked sense of humour which kept us entertained but also helped us to keep things in perspective when the going got tough . It was perhaps her practical generosity and her generosity of spirit which was most endearing about Eileen, nothing was too much trouble if it meant helping someone, and her friendship and care were extended to all, no matter what.

Eileen was proud of her Catholic upbringing and heritage, and her deep but practical faith in a loving Father, "Him up there" as she would often say, was loudly proclaimed in her daily living. Next to God, the centre of Eileen ' s life was her family to whom she was a devoted and much loved wife and mother, grandmother and sister. Those of us who were privileged to be able to call her friend and colleague remember her with love and fondness , and we ,are confident that she is now with the Lord whom she loved and served so well. We ask God to comfort all of those who grieve for her.

When she went away my Fridays were no longer fun , no more saladas, rice cakes, peanut butter and cheese, no more orange mineral water and milky ways, my Fridays were no longer fun when she went away .

The long talks about anything and everything, walks through her garden, a smile, the caring that was always there on Fridays with my friend, but she went away and they were no longer fun No more old photos to look at, the sketches and beautiful drawings that she drew, no more billycart races and cricket, no more swinging on the swing, my Fridays weren ' t fun anymore and they still aren't She used to speak of the future, my friend her great new house she'd worked so hard to get, she lived in that little house for so long, ten years at least.

I wasn't there that morning when my friend passed away and I didn't get to tell her all the things I had to say - It was a Saturday morning l' d seen her only hours before, but my Friday friend went away, my Friday friend Annie.

She left her two boys, her new house, husband and a great future, she left to go to heaven and now she lives upon the hill.

When I think of this my eyes swell and begin to fill.

Yes Anne, you were a "Touch of Paradise" ......... .

Jaslin Kearney Year 12 (written in I 993)

Ms Jenny Ricketts Ln March this year we farewelled Ms. Jenny Ricketts who took leave for the remainder of 1997 to gain experience in counselling. Ms Ricketts has made a great contribution to Catholic Ladies ' College both as a class room teacher in English and her involvement in extra-curricular activities. Ms Ricketts established a systematic leadership program in the school and organised workshops for students involved in leadership. Ms Ricketts will be especially remembered for her work in the field of Social Justice where she raised both student and staff awareness of issues in this area.

Congratulations Mr. Garkel Congratulations to Mr James Garkel on his recent Marriage to Miss Jacqueline Nathanielsz. We wish them every happiness for the future

Mrs Margaret Spain We are sorry to report that Mrs Margaret Spain a much loved and respected teacher of music has decided to retire.

Mrs Spain began her association with C,L.C. at the age of eleven as a student at C.L.C. (East Melbourne) and has taught C.L.C. students for over 26 years. Mrs Spain spoke to us of her many associations and happy memories. " My school years were very happy, my musical education stemmed from my mother (who was also a piano teacher at C.L.C. East Melbourne) and Sister Teresa (a Sister of Charity) who was in charge of music at the college and who taught me to love singing and choral work.

Congratulations to Ms Elsa Viertmann on the birth of her son Christopher

I recall one time in particular after my studies at the University Conservatorium when she called on me in a real emergency.

Her well known C.L.C. choir was to sing at the Melbourne Town Hall and at short notice she was without a conductor that was in the pre- Vatican II era when a religious nun was not permitted to perform in public.

After my marriage and having five sons I was teaching at C.L.C. (East Melb.) in the late 60's when the decision was made to re-locate the college to Eltharn in 1971.

Some of my happiest memories from teaching were; a choral performance of "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" with 200 enthusiastic voices from years 7 to I 0. It was performed with a Shadow Play directed by a talented staff member Nicky Nicholls, and also the excellent piano accompaniment of my sister Val for our choral performances.

I also worked with the late Connie Casey on many musicals such as "Fiddler on the Roof' and "the Sound of Music" Finally may I say what a pleasure it has been to be part of the College at Eltham, and to watch its development over the last 26 years. I hope I have helped my music students to acquire skills and develop a love of music which will enrich their lives"

On behalf of the school community we would like to thank Mrs Spain for her great contribution to the musical life of C.L.C. and wish her well in her retirement.

The opening of our exhibition of student work in art graphics, textiles, ceramics and dressmaking was a wonderful occasion that demonstrated the excellence of teaching and the excellent talent of students in the Visual Arts. The exhibition was opened by Peter Dougherty, editor of an arts journal, who was most impressed by the creativity and skill of the student work.

The evening was made more enjoyable by the musical program provided by students and staff from the Performing Arts Faculty (special thanks to Miss Kitchen and Mrs Von Moller) and the delicious supper prepared by the Food technology students and served by student hostesses. Congratulations to all the students whose work was exhibited. Special thanks to the Visual Arts Staff - Mrs Janet Twigden, Mrs Diana Warrell, Mrs Kaye Flanagan, Ms Niki Hassold, Mrs Loretta Falvo, and Mrs Lynn Mason.

The following is the talk give by Mariella McKinley about the process of envisaging and creating her beautiful quilt which was part of her V.C.E. art folio and which was an outstanding feature of the exhibition.

"The quilt is one of three final artworks, that along with developmental work, make up my Art CAT 2 - the folio.

After experimenting with fairly traditional quilting and textile techniques, I decided to make a water-colour quilt. This style which I first saw in a book, generally uses small 2" squares, arranged so that they blend together to form a particular design .

The entire front of my quilt consists of 2", Patterned squares. Altogether there are 5, 929 squares.

The steps involved in making this quilt included: Sketching a design for its front, which I had to change slightly as I worked.

- collecting a wide variety of different coloured and patterned fabrics from home, shops and curtain sample booklets.

- washing, ironing, and carefully cutting the fabric into 2" squares.

- sorting these into colours, and then arranging them in tone from light to dark.

- drawing a 2" square grid on a large sheet. Roughly sketching my design onto it and hanging the sheet on to a large frame .

-Piecing the squares onto the sheet - blending the colours carefully according to my sketch . I had to use a step ladder for the higher areas.

- pinning and sewing the blocks together.

-joining the front, cotton wadding and backing together, which was difficult at times because the quilt is quite heavy - and lastly adding the finishing touches with hand embroidery.

In the work of the French Impressionists, they often placed unmixed strokes of paints side by side, creating an image that looked rough up close. However, when viewed from a distance, the eye blurs the individual elements into soft images creating a beautiful overall effect. I tried to do the same with this quilt. I wanted to create it in such a way, that the picture on the front is not immediately evident. But if you stand back and look at it for a while the picture becomes clearer and parts start to stand out, such as the butterflies, the tree trunk and climbing flowers, the house, the path and the pond.

I began this quilt early this year and tried to work on it regularly. It took nine months to complete and hundreds of hours altogether.

The garden - with its many beautiful colours and different lights - is the common theme and inspiration behind my work."

1997 has proved to be a very successful and fulfilling year for C.L.C.'s sporting curriculum.

The year has seen many students excel on the sporting field, producing some outstanding achievements, particularly at the annual inter-school sports carnivals.

To kick off the year the inter-house swimming carnival was first on the agenda. All students participated and supported their house captains on the day. Many students took an active role in ensuring the day was once again a great success. Aikenhead did particularly well claiming first place on the winner's podium . Loyola was a close second.

Following this, athletes were selected to represent C.L.C. at the annual inter-school Swimming Carnival at the State Swim Centre. All participants did extremely well especially the junior and diving categories, who both came an outstanding second. Overall C.L.C. came a commendable fourth. All members of the squad should be congratulated for their dedication to early morning training.

The Inter-house Athletics Carnival was another significant highlight of the year. At the end of the day the results were very close with Aikenhead making it a double and winning the athletics as well. Loyala were runners-up for the second time in the year.

An Inter-school athletics team was selected and the hard early morning training began . All the girls must be commended for their terrific attitudes towards training and on the day of competition. The lnterschool Athletics Carnival was held at Olympic Park with C.L.C. having an outstanding day with an overall placing of second.

This year has been a great year of sport not only for C.L.C. but also for many individual efforts from our students. Our sporting teams have ranged from equestrian teams, basketball teams to netball and cross country teams. Carla and I have decided to present "Sports Captain's Awards" to a girl from each section of the school for dedication and outstanding achievement in sport.

These girls are: Junior - Kate Hewson. Intermediate - Nacara Constance. Senior - Jenni Taylor.

To sum up the year, it has been most enjoyable and successful and we wish our successors Hannah Petropolous and Lizzy Gardner the best for 1998.

Intersch ool Athletic s Sports Congratulations to all competitors for a great effort at the S.C.S.A. Athletic sports at Olympic Park on Friday, May ninth. Our athletes were fortunate to run on the newly upgraded track that overseas competitors such as Carl Lewis compete on . Our team worked hard for five weeks training regularly at 6.45 am at Willinda Park or on the school oval with Claire Abakumenko, Carla Morgan and the P.E. staff. Field event competitors were also keen and took throwing implements home to train over the holiday period.

Diverse Course Offerings

Australian Student Prize Winner Christine Lewis who won the 1996 award for outstanding Academic Achieveme nt was also awarded an Australian Student Prize from the Commonw ealth governmen t for her outstanding scholarship in her V .C.E. ( 1996). Christine achieved a perfect study score of 50 in Accounting and an overall TER score of99.65

The range and variety of courses offered to our students reflects their individuality. While the results are pleasing, they are only part of the larger picture. The years at CL.C. have helped the girls develop their individual talents in a variety of ways and have given them the confidence and skills to face the challenges of the future . Outstanding Achievements for 1996 Congratulations Alicia Harrington In 1996 every year 12 student completed her V .C.E. In particular we congratulate the following students who achieved TER scores above 90: Vanessa Bolger, Megan Clifford, Serina Cucuzza, Michelle Gaff, Emma Gilmartin, Joanne Gurry, Jacinta Hanlon, Kirsty Heim, Rachaele May, Amy McEwen, Carly O' Donovan, Emily Vella and Catherine West. Special congratulations must go to the three girls who achieved TER scores over 99. Christine Lewis 99.65, Karen Robins-Browne 99.45, and Lucy Cotter 99.10.

Lucinda Mason (Year 11) received a perfect study score in Geography V.C.E. units 3 and 4 and is to be congratulated for this achievement. Carly O' Donovan gained a perfect study score in History. Lucy Cotter gained a High Distinction and Kirsty Heim a Distinction in a first year university Maths subject which they were able to use as part of their TER score.

Overall 18% of our students achieved scores of over 40 in individual studies. Using this as a measure, C.L.C. was ranked fifth highest among Victorian Catholic Schools.

Congratulation to all the girls of 1996.

Tertiary Places 78% of C.L.C. students were offered a University place, 18% a TAFE place and 4% chose to enter the work force .

Alicia Harrington who completed her V.C.E. at C.L.C in 1994 recently received on of Victoria University of Technolog y's inaugural awards for first year students. The awards were described by the Vice - Chancellor as being " students who showed motivation, determination to succeed and aptitude for their course, our brightest and best, the leaders of the university" Congratulations Alicia.

Young Artists V.C.E. TOP CAT Exhibition Laura Colbert' s 1996 V.C.E. artwork, "Alliance of the Unborn" was selected as part of the V.C.E. Top Cats Arts exhibition at the Prestigious National Gallery of Victoria.

This exhibition is set up each year as a representative sample of outstanding student work from across the state. Laura's futuristic wedding dress was assembled from found objects such as dry-cleaning bags, cardboard, string and wire, whilst tulle, spray paint and sequins added the finishing touches.

Discarded joggers, an old belt and sunglasses were the chosen Laura employed these simple mediums to accessories. stunning effect. The dramatic result certainly turned heads.

Laura has taken a year off study to work this year but hopes to study Fashion Design next year.

Mathematics Encouragem ent Award Katherine Gilbert is the winner of the La Trobe University Mathematics Encouragement Award th is year.

Dr. Bob Stuadte, a lecturer in biostatistics attended the final school assembly, and presented Katherine with a certificate and book voucher. Katherine was also invited to participate in a special program of activities at the university. This involved a "Hands -on" introduction to university studies in Computer Science and Computer Engineering, Mathematics and Statistical Science.

V.C.E. Units 3 and 4 Katherine is to be congratulated on her most successful academic year. Not only did shP, achieve the La Trobe University Mathematics Encouragement Award but she also represented C.L.C. at the Australian Youth Forum held in Canberra this year, and she participated in and presented a most interesting report on the "Constitutional Convention" held at Loyala College.

Triathlon Success Congratulations to Year 12 student Carla Morgan the school's vicesports captain for 1997 who came second in the 16-17 year old State Series Triathlon last year and won "The Great South West Coast Triathlon" in Portland this year.

This exciting sport caters for novices with short races of 300m swim, 3km bike ride and a 2km run, to the Hawaii Ironman consisting of a 6km swim, I 80km bike ride and 42.2krn run .

Carla has been training as a triathlete for the past five years. She belongs to Jones Cycles Triathlon Club and trains with coach Bob Kelly. Carla has recently been chosen to join the Saucony Junior Development Squad to be coached by the State coaching director, Digger Elrick, with a view of competing in the National Championships next season.

Carla is not only a talented athlete herself but she has assisted with the trai ning of others at the school. Her efforts were recognised when she was awarded (jointly with Claire Abakumenko) the "Janette Clarke Memorial Trophy" which is given each year to a student or students who have made an all round contribution to the sporting life of the school. Congratulations to both Carla and Claire for winning this trophy fo r 1997.

Vanessa Rischitelli Year 11 Congratulations to Vanessa who won selection as a member of the 1997 Victorian Secondary Schools Sports Association Basketball Team to compete in the Australian Schools Sports Council's National basketball Championships in Sydney in August. Vanessa has also been invited to join the Intensive Training program for 1997 with the Victorian Basketball Association. Vanessa has been identified with exceptional potential for basketball and her training program has been mapped out by the National Teams Coaches from the Institute of Australian Sport.

Vanessa has not only performed well personally in basketball but has found time with Lauren Sonza, Alyssa Heim and Tamsin Payne to assist with the coaching of the school's interm ediate and junior basketball teams.

Sacha L'Huillier Yr 12 Sacha has proved herself a formidable opponent on the squash court. She was runner -up in the Victorian Junior Squash Titles this year and she is ranked second in Victoria for her age group in 1997. Congratulations Sacha!

Michelle Wicking Caltex all rounder award winner The Ampol All-Rounder Award is made to a student who contributes significantly to the life of the college across a number of fields and who has been an ambassador for the College and a role model for all other students.

Michelle Wicking clearly fulfilled these criteria.

Throughout her years at Catholic Ladies' College she has achieved outstanding academic results, culminating in an achievement Award for Excellence in Year 11 , and continued fine results so far in Year 12.

In the sporting field she has represented C.L.C. in inter-school athletics every year from years 7 to 12.

She has been a Year level Representative for the last Three years and a Peer Support leader in Year 10.

Her contribution to the development of the college is marked by her involvement as a member of the student consultation for Project 2000, and as a member of the Curriculum Committee for the past two years.

She has contributed in the Performing Arts field as a cast member of the Rock Eisteddfod in 1994 and the school Production of"Grease" in 1995.

As if that is not enough, this student has been a wonderful ambassador for the College, for her State and for her country as a champion Irish Dancer. For the record, she has won ten consecutive State Titles, an Australian title and represented her country in international competition overseas.

An Oxygen Matter Sitting pretty in the periodic table, firmly and securely nestled in between nitrogen and fluorine, at element number eight is oxygen. One such oxygen atom, Charlie, when he was old enough, set out from his haven of conformity and structure into the real world of chemistry around him.

Finding himself as part of a water molecule, Charlie tried to make friends with Howard and Brian, the two small hydrogen atoms he was attached to. Knowing that a water molecule consisted of two hydrogen atoms plus one oxygen, Charlie often wondered about his other namesakes floating around him with their own hydrogen partners. One day he asked Howard for a chat, but was rudely silenced. "Look I am forced to share my only electron with you so don't talk to, or even think about me, OK?". Brian piped up, "Same goes for me!" And that was that.

With Brian and Howard constantly gossiping to each other, ignoring the very atom that kept them stable, Charlie felt abandoned so he just sighed and continued along his lonely way.

Feeling Jost and isolated Charlie tried to chat to other water molecules that gently and peacefully floated around him.

Unfortunately though, he soon discovers that the molecules have already passed him before any atom can murmur a greeting back.

Charlie's hopes for company are destroyed because in just a tiny drop of water there are more than a thousand billion billion other atoms floating around so he will never see the one same water molecule again .

One morning, after days of sitting in an ugly brown jar Charlie begins to look on the bright side because he awakens to find that his environment has changed. Through the translucent glass he can vaguely make out the shapes of beakers and test tubes standing patiently next to his bottle; he is in a chemistry lab.

With excitement washing over him, Charlie feels the entire bottle shake violently as it is wheeled into an adjoining lab and to his sheer delight, feels himself sliding closer towards an empty beaker. This beaker is then lifted clean out of the air and across the room to a table that contained metal rods and wire. Curious now, Charlie fights to see over and through other molecules as he feels two of the metal rods pushed into the beaker along with a foreign substance. A salt named PJ, or so he was told, consisting of copper sulfate is now present, mingling with the water molecules. Aching to be able to talk to PJ, Charlie tries to talk Howard and Brian into moving closer to a salt particle, but is severely disappointed when they refuse. Being a private sort of couple, Howard and Brian are happy moving along their merry way ignoring any other signs of communication.

Poor Charlie is devastated but doesn't brood for too long because an astounding thing happens. In an intense moment of heat Charlie, without knowing it was lifted clear away from Howard and Brian and found himself floating freely among many other atoms. Charlie had just lived the phenomenon he had only previously heard about, electrolysis. However, to his dismay, instead of rejoicing Charlie finds himself yearning for his hydrogen counterparts back, at least he would feel stable by sharing their electrons. In a sudden panic Charlie realises that he needed Howard and Brian for survival. If he doesn't connect with another atom, other than hydrogen soon, he would spend the rest of his days in a watery grave when abruptly he feels someone grasp him from behind. In a second all of his panic and yearning had ceased; he was now sharing his electrons with another oxygen atom, known as Cecile.

Charlie and Cecile were a happy couple, a diatomic particle, perfectly matched and at peace floating aimlessly arm in arm around the air. In a mixture of nitrogen and oxygen this couple felt at home and often told the story of how they met. Back in the chemistry lab, in the beaker, the action of a current passing through the metal rods, or electrodes as Cecile would affectionately call them, caused the water and the copper sulfate to dissociate, forming sulfuric acid and oxygen gas. While oxygen atoms all around them easily found a partner, and before any nasty hydrogen could connect with her, Cecile had blindly held on to anything willing to share electrons and in turn found Charlie. They both laughed about this story now, about their panic and desperation, and were now very content with their new lives together.

Their lives together, as bad luck would have it, doesn ' t last as long as Charlie would have hoped because they were soon separated. It seems that as Cecile and Charlie floated further and higher up into the atmosphere, the ultra-violet radiation from the sun tore them apart forcing them to live separate lives. Charlie, now a depressed atom again, couldn't bear to go on any further without his Cecile.

He moped around the atmosphere desperately searching for his love when one day he bumped into his childhood neighbours Jim and Tim Nitrogen. The Nitrogen twins from the good old periodic table days weren ' t only his neighbours, but good friends of Charlie's so they spent all their time together reminiscing, but all through this, not once did Charlie stop thinking about Cecile.

Charlie and the twins constantly searched for Cecile, until one day the twins were suddenly charged into a very high energy state, they couldn't stop itching and scratching. Charlie found this quite funny, to see them spinning around attacking themselves, wh.en unexpectedly an oxygen molecule attached itself to him. Charlie was then introduced to 'Elvis & Co.'.

Unable to see Elvis's partner or even speak to her Charlie was overwhelmed by this guy's constant chatter and seeing that he had no choice slumped next to 'The 0. King ', as Elvis liked to call himself. Charlie's thoughts wandered, again towards Cecile, as he tried to block out Elvis's conceited talk and awful singing when he heard that all too familiar voice telling 'The Oxygen King' to quit singing. His emotions soared as he realised that Cecile was the other unfortunate atom attached to Elvis. He soon discovered that after they were separated, Cecile, spending all of her time thinking about Charlie was suddenly intruded upon by another oxygen atom, Elvis, and their duo formed. Charlie then was connected to them to form ozone, an allotropic form of oxygen.

Charlie and Cecile were so overjoyed to be with each other again they almost forgot that they were carrying the extra baggage of Elvis. Elvis was all too quick to remind them that they can ' t forget 'The 0. King', when the ultra violet radiation, ironically, was the power that saved them from Elvis. They were separated from him and were, once again the special oxygen molecule they deserved to be. Charlie and Cecile continued their adventures together, sharing electrons, travelling arm in arm.

United?

"A united Australia which respects this land of ours: Values the Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander heritage: and provides justice and equity for all" These words epitomise the hopes of all who attend the Aboriginal Reconciliation Convention, held at the Melbourne Convention Centre fro m May 26-28th 1997. Delegates came from all around the country, and included politicians and members of the Aboriginal community.

Inside the auditorium, there was a hopeful air of expectation. An ex pectation that at the end of the three-day convention, white Australians would be reconciled with the indigenous peoples, and that we could all live in harmony, united together.

However, two storeys above the auditorium, in the dressing room, there was a very different feeling. Fourteen Irish Dancers and their mothers rushed around getting ready to perform. The item had been a long time coming together: a five hour long technical rehearsal the night before had failed to iron out all the problems, and butterflies fluttered inside the stomachs of all. The small room was crowded, because it included six Spanish dancers and a three-piece band, ten Aboriginal dancers, a Brazilian band, approximately twelve other performers, and John Williamson, the Australian singer/songwriter.

Being part of such a diverse, multicultural group of talented performers made the whole experience all the more exciting. As well as being excited we were all nervous. Everyone knew how important th is performance was. Simply knowing that John Howard and Jeff Kennett were there was enough for us to know that we had to perform well. However it was obvious to me that most of my friends particularly the younger girls, did not realise just how important the convention was, and how much it meant to so many people.

Emotions were running high in the auditorium, a fact which became increasingly obvious as the morning proceed ....... .

The audience was hushed by the rhythmic tapping of sticks. The distinct vocalisations of an aborigine filled the room, as spotlights illuminated the stage, to reveal members of the Bangarra Aboriginal Dance Troupe escorting others onto the stage. These included aboriginal elders, one of whom we had spoken to earlier, when she to ld us stories of her life on the land. The dancers also escorted John Howard, Jeff Kennett, Cheryl Kernot, Kim Beasley, and Patrick Dobson( chairman of the convention) into their chairs, lined up on the left of the stage. The aboriginal people then performed a traditional welcome, where they ward off evil spirits and called on the Gods to be present.

Following the welcome, came speeches. This was the time the emotions, particularly those of the aboriginal people, came flowing out. Before the first official speaker had a chance to get to the microphone, an aboriginal woman took the stage and began to tell "her story"; the story of how government bureaucrats had falsely accused her of child abuse when she went to ask for help with her mentally disabled son. Her anger showed everyone how much pain she had gone through, and her words drew sympathy from everyone.

As I listened to her speak, I realised how little I actually knew about indigenous issues. This woman did not deserve to be accused of child abuse; the social workers had never even seen her son. But sadly I now realise, this is the way so many of the aborigines are treated; unfairly. However she was not there for sympathy. The main point she wanted to make was regarding Pauline Hanson. She totally denounced the way Hanson is treating the aboriginal people, and warned her she should not mess with them: "Where we come from, it' s only the quick and the dead, and we are too quick for you,

so you may as well consider yourself dead." The speech evoked applause from the aboriginal members of the audience, while her presence on stage brought disbelief from others. She was eventually escorted off the stage by Bangarra members, who apologised to delegates for any offence she may have caused.

However, the aboriginal delegates were even more offended by the speech given by John Howard. Some of them stood and turned around, their backs facing Howard. It was at this moment that I felt a real sense of history. His refusal to apologise for the "stolen children", and the audience members with their backs to him, was sure to be remembered for a long time to come, and it felt to me like we had stepped back into an era when white and indigenous Australia were truly divided. I certainly did not feel as though I was at a convention which was aiming to end that division. The audience yelled and jeered, and standing backstage, it became increasingly worrying, as the audience grew more angry, and Howard yelled to be heard above the noise. The speech finally ended, and he was heckled as he walked back to his seat. The speeches of Jeff Kennett, Cheryl Kernot and Kim Beasley were somewhat less eventful, with a tearyeyed Beasley gaining both the audience's silence and respect.

The auditorium still abuzz over the thoughts provoked by the speeches, the entertainment portion of the morning began. As we danced onto the stage, the audience clapped and cheered, realising that we were "Riverdancers". The whole scene looking out over the audience was much more relaxed and jubilant than it had been just ten short minutes ago. They clapped in time to the music, and the dance went off without a hitch . The response was overwhelming .

Thunderous applause, and a standing ovation after the finale gave the feeling that the convention would be a success after all. It certainly made me and many others realise just how much heartache the aboriginal people have gone through over the past 209 years.

Kath Walker, an aboriginal poet, who later took her tribal name Oodgeroo Noonucal wrote in one of her poems " Let us not be bitter" "Away with bitterness and the bitter past; Let us try to understand the white man ' s ways And accept them as they accept us; Let us judge the white people by the best of their race" After my experiences at the convention, I can see why it's so hard for aboriginal people to do.

Michelle Wicking Michelle Wicking competed in the 1997 North American Irish Dancing Championships in Vancouver (Canada). Dancing in this world class competition , Michelle reached the finals in her grade (under 18) and achieved 8th place overall. This is an outstanding result and we are very proud of Michelle's achievement.

Argumentative Essay Marijuana should be decriminalized Marijuana should be decriminalised because it can be helpful towards sick people, can assist people with relieving stress and getting away from their worries and occasionally can be fun. I think marijuana use is okay if it is used occasionally but I still think it should be kept illegal because otherwise it could get too many individuals addicted. I believe an occasional smoke of marijuana will not do much harm . I know that once pe<?ple ask if you have tried marijuana and you say " Yeah, I smoke once in a blue moon", they think you are a druggie even though you have tried it only a few times, but I don't believe smoking marijuana occasionally will do as much harm as long as it is not too frequent.

Marijuana should be decriminalized because it is said to have good effects on individuals who are sick, especially cancer chemotherapy patients. Marijuana is said to help relieve the pain of cancer chemotherapy patients and help with their sleeping patterns. If sick individuals used marijuana as a reliable source to help with their sickness to try and help cure or give them a longer life expectancy then I think marijuana is fine to be used in this situation.

Another reason for decriminalizing marijuana is that it can be used to relieve stress and help people to get away from their worries. If people are stressed or worried I think that marijuana could be used to relieve their stress, but with their worries the individual has to realize that once the marijuana has worn off, their worries will still be there but marijuana can help put them off for a little while. Frequent excessive amounts of marijuana could then get the individual addicted. I don ' t think the drug is the actual problem even though it does contain chemicals that can be addictive but I believe it is people that are the problem. People may only aim to try marijuana but by smoking it socially when they are with friends they may then start to get addicted and think they have to do it everytime they are with their friends : it is peer pressure as they smoke marijuana to fit in .

The Australian Youth Forum Vasco Da Garma Conference In June of this year I was lucky enough to be selected to represent C.L.C. for three days at the well known International Garma VascoDa Quincentenary Conference, as part of a small group of from delegates student secondary schools all over Melbourne. Commemorating the travels of the Portuguese conference the explorer, program presented a varied of range absorbing and lectures and workshops which focused on aspects of early Portuguese history, concluding with a vigorous debate with historian Alan Frost about the I 5th century controversial discovery of Australia by the Portuguese. The conference gave me an opportunity to use and analytical the communication skills acquired through V.C.E. history on challenging and fascinating topics, while also providing to be a thoroughly rewarding further which experience reinforced the relevance and studying of importance history.

When J.J . Kahla was eighteen and unemployed, he had a dream. He wanted to give young Australi.ans an opportunity to voice their opiniorts on contemporary issues. Last weekend the first Australian Youth Forum was held, and JJ 's dream became a reality. I was lucky enough to be selected as C.L.C.'s representative to attend the forum, held in Canberra at Old Parliament House.

The three hundred students who travelled to Canberra discussed many current issues, including racism, drug and alcohol abuse, youth suicide, education, homelessness, youth rights, self•esteem, entertainment, the future of Australia and unemployment. The issue 1 discussed, Unemployment, is a very interesting, complicated and debatable problem. Our task was to devise. ways in which to lessen the problem of unemployment. A very hard task indeed.

By Sunday night each group compiled a report outlining their suggestions. High profile MPs, Dr. Brendan Nelson, and ALP Senator Kate Lundy, and Democrat Senator Natasha Stott Despoja attended the Sunday luncheon and were each presented with a copy of the report to give to their respective leaders.

On Sunday we were given the opportunity to dream wildly and we were asked to write a statement to the rest of Australia's youth, Australia's politicians and Australia' s business people. My favourite message written to all young people reads, "Dream for the future, act now".

Highlights from the forum included : participating in the Mexican wave in the old Senate, meeting and making friends with students from around Australia, inspiring speeches from Rev. Tim Costello, Gordon Jackson, and Brendan Nelson; and the sense of achievement I felt after our report was finished. Apart from strengthening my understanding of economics and teaching me how tp .solve problems and make decisi.ons, the forum inspired me to chase after my dreams, and to start right now Katherine Gilbert Year 11 .

Constitutional Convention On July 24th six year eleven students attended the constitutional Convention held at Loyala College. Those who attended included Stephanie Puls, Kathryn Ioannidis, Kim Hennessy, Deborah Micallef, Sarah Molloy, Katherine Gilbert and Mrs Kelly. Around forty students representing four different schools attended the convention. The convention gave us an opportunity to voice our opinions on Australia's constitution. Guest speakers include Ms. Sheryl Garbutt MP and the former premier John Cain. They provide us with information on our current preamble to the constitution. A preamble is a piece of writing before the constitution. It should reflect our country and describe what it means to be an Australian and what we value.

It was then left to us to do the talking. Our first discussion focused on what changes we think should be made to our very boring and lifeless preamble. It led to a very heated debate. We then realised just how difficult it will be to make changes to our constitution.

Our second discussion centred on what our constitution should say about the rights and lives of indigenous people. Again the topic sparked very lively discussion. WE ALL LEARNED SO MUCH FROM THE CONVENTION. After we realised America was not the only . country which had a constitution and that we actually have one of our own, we learnt that it was extremely boring. Our constitution was written in 190 I and therefor fails to reflect the Australia that we live in today. The questions put to us at the convention are the problems my generation will face in the future. The convention was such a fantastic opportunity to learn more about our country and to voice our very own opinions and thoughts.

Year 11 Formal The weeks, or shall I say months, leading up to the formal proved to be a chaotic trialling time! Not just for the students: I can remember numerous occasions when we were told not to talk about the formal by teachers. But lets face it, with the inevitable questions such as "What will I wear?" "Who will I take?" facing us all, we had to talk!

But as one o'clock approached on Friday the 25th of July, excitement filled the air as we all made a mad dash out of school to our appointments in need of transforming ourselves.

Before we knew it the clock struck seven, and masses of limos started to arrive out the front of Lincoln of Toorak receptions. Whether you went solo, or sported your dream babe, friend or blind date by your side, it didn 't matter!

The night was full of socialising, dancing, chilling with your buddies and taking many rolls of photos! In between all this a three course meal was enjoyed and so was the great mix of music provided by the DJ, and the antics of our friendly photographer "Jeffrey" The great thing about the formal is the atmosphere. The whole year level is together.. .... ... I have never seen so many gorgeous people in one room before!

The night proved to be a great success thanks to Mrs Young and all the Class representatives. Even now, many moons later the formal still creeps into our conservation proving what a memorable evening it was.

Carla De Angelis Year 11

Central Australia Our trip to Central Australia went from the 17th of September to the 27th and I was lucky enough to attend this trip. I was extremely excited about leaving and had been counting down the days from the beginning of Term Three. None of my close friends were going on this trip but that did not bother me as I soon made new friends and by the end of the trip we had become pretty close.

My first night on the bus is probably one I will never forget. I had the pleasure of being able to sleep next to "Fearless Phil". I spent the whole night plastered up against the window too scared to get too close. I was not quite sure what kept me awake all night, Phil snoring or the fact that my face was squashed up against the window!

I would have to say that my greatest achievement was climbing Ayers Rock. The scenery at the top of Ayers Rock was breathtaking.

Most of the girls didn't get too many photos of the view from Ayers Rock as most were taking a particular piece of scenery, and that was " The Orange-T-shirt Man". I think that a lot of girls would climb Ayers Rock over and over just to see this guy again . I wonder if he knew that all the girls were getting their photos taken with him in the background!

Overall I found Central Australia to be one of the most exciting trips I have ever been on.

Once again, C.L.C. held it's Open day on Sunday 2nd March. From 11 .00 am till 3.00 pm, the school grounds were filled with the community, students, teachers and parents. Open Day started in the hall with a performance

by Year seven students with a mask parade that was followed by an official welcome by Ms . Ryan. Displays and activities were conducted throughout the school building. The College Choir, School bands, Drama and Dance performances were all held in the hall; Physical Challenges in the P.E. Center, Students verses Teachers Workshops in Ceramics, Debate and many more.

Robotics, Multimedia and Science were also held in certain classrooms. An Information Desk, Enrollment Inquiries, Souvenirs ancf Guided Tours given by Year I 0 students were available in the foyer.

Fro m the minute l wa lked into th e room l knew it was goi ng to be great week. l was very nervo us whi ch co mes natu ra ll y to me when l am beginning somethin g new, but the fee li ng inside Prep J's classroom was so cute and loveable th at I fe lt we lcome immedi ately. I co uldn ' t he lp but fee l relieved that my work ex perience was in this env iro nment and not at a desk in a crowded office. Finger paintings, pictures of people with no body, just feet and arms co ming ou t of heads and brightly co loured picture books framed every inch of wa ll space that co ul d be seen. It all seemed so familiar and my primary school memori es fl ooded back to me. l wo uld never have thought that five years after my primary schoo l days I wo uld be back to teach myself.

The be ll rang and an army of little peo ple marched into the classroom, unpacked the ir bags and sat on th e floor. It seemed so natura l for them but it was only recently that they had learnt to do this. All th ose half days of kinder, seemingly endless hours pl ay ing an d watching Sesame Street were over for these eager faced, intrigued loo king fi ve year olds.

They came to school to learn and play "Does anyone recognise someone new in our class?". Said Jane, Prep J' s teacher(my fri end .) l had every fin ger in the class poi nting at me. The children looked shy but each face had a little grin on it. l looked into each ones eyes, all I saw was yo un g innocent eyes th at would believe anything you to ld them. That was when I reali sed there was more to teachin g prep than cuttin g and pasting.

It amazed me how much time and effort Eve ry went in to a day of teaching. activity or game was completed fo r a reason and l soo n fi gured out th at a simple "show and te ll" session was there to build the children's co nfidence in speakin g to people. l was fo rtun ate enough to attend two staff meeti ngs. The first with all th e Prep teachers was to organise th e Easter program with wo rk sheets, acti vities and stories. Each of th e teachers worked so we ll with th e oth ers and I could really see · thei r team spiri t.

My first taste of auth ority came when I had to correct th e prep' s wo rk. Some of th em were fantasti c and settl ed so qui ckly whil e oth ers were really chatty or slow to get started. I didn ' t want th e kid s to think I was really mean so at first I overl oo ked misbehav iour but then realised th at if I was to pursue a career in teaching, I would have to keep contro l. l kn ew if I didn ' t th ey would soon be wa lk ing all over me and l wo uld get no res pect. T he great thin g about young children is that wh en th ey do something wrong, they know it was bad and th ey feel wo rse fo r do ing it th an fo r yo u te lling th em off.

Calling "m preps"(whi ch I fo ndly named th em) affectionate wo uld have to be the biggest understatement in the wo rld . If l dared to leave the safety of the staffro om at lunchtime l was bombarded with arms wrapped around my waist and the greatest battl e of the playground was which two lucky people got one of my hands. l got hugs and ki sses from both the girl s and boys whi ch made me feel extremely wanted and loved. It was a fantasti c fee ling.

On my last day I received little presents and cards from my preps. One of my preps called Jake got up and said "Thank-you for teaching us Sarah. We love you, come back soon!" Well, that set me right off! I looked around at all their beautiful little faces and started bawling my eyes out. Jane announced that it was time for a group hug and I was immediately buried in a sea of little bodies.

I had th e most enj oyable and fulfillin g week at wo rk experi ence than I co uld have I know I will always dreamed of. remember Prep J as my fi rst teaching experi ence and I know it won' t be my last.

YEAR 10 COMMUNITY SERVICE Over a period of ten weeks the year 10 girls were lucky enough to take part in one of many places for Community Service. I was lucky enough to do my Community Service at Judge Book Retirement home with three other year I 0 friends, Nacara Constance, Vanessa Cortese and Gianna Bunney.

When we first heard that we would be going to Judge Book, we were a little disappointed as we had our hearts set on helping out with little children, but this was not to be the case. Judge Book has been one of the best things I have ever taken part in at school.

For next year' s year tens I really do think that working with old people was fantastic. We learnt so much from them . They have so much to tell you about and so many stories-funny and sad, even if you do hear them over and over again.

YEAR 10 SYDNEY I CANBERRA CAMP 1997 Overall all I have to say is that my time at Judge Book was not only fun but also an experience I will never forget. I made many friends and have great memories that will be cherished always. If anyone has a chance to go to Judge Book Go!!

At 6.00am on 26th June, 40 students, Mr Nil sson, Mrs Bowyer, Mrs Falvo and Ms Twigden, boarded the ' Desert Rat' for the traditional Year 10 Sydney and Canberra camp.

After enjoying morning tea provided by Mr Nilsson and admiring the Dog on Tuckerbox, we set off for a two hour drive to our resting place for the next two nights; Canberra. We arrived at our motel at 6.00pm, and after unloading our luggage and sorting out our rooms we headed for the dining room .

After a nice meal and singing happy birthday to Belinda Haines, we started getting organised for some sightseeing. Our first stop was to see the historical sites that were made to honour the men and women who fought and died for our country during WWI , WW2, and the Vietnam and Korean wars. Then it was on to see the magnificent sight of the A.C.T from the top of Mt. Ainsle.

Everyone was up bright and early the next day. First we were taken on a tour of the little village of embassies. There were requests to stop to take photos of the different embassies particularly Italy, but the one that surprised everyone on the size and detail was the Chinese embassy, which was extremely large with at least 300 rooms. Our next stop was Parliament House, which everyone enjoyed. We all participated in a

mock parliament, then went on to see what the real Parliament was like, with our P.M. John Howard in action.

After Parliament House we took a visit to the High Court, where we were informed about the legal system and taken to see a court case. Just outside of the Law Courts and next to Lake Burley Griffin, we ate lunch in the great weather, that lasted for the whole four days.

Questacon, which is a similar version to Science Works, was enjoyable with a lot of hands on activities for everyone to keep themselves amused. Some found the futuristic Space Food, that was sold at the gift shop, an interesting snack.

It was time to head back to our hotel, to clean up then dinner, and sing happy birthday to Mrs Falvo. Not long after dinner we were gone again to the movies with a lot of different opinions of what to see, and then for supper at Pancake After a little communication lapse Parlour. teachers and our bus driver, we our between relocated the bus and were back to our hotels for a well earned sleep. Before we left Canberra we visited the old colonial like Parliament House, which is a lot smaller after being to the modern Parliament House.

It was Wednesday, so that meant we were off to Sydney and we were all very excited.

Before we knew it, we were travelling through the suburbs of Sydney, and had arrived at the Rocks, were we just shopped and shopped. We met back at the bus about 5.30pm and left for our hotel, which was a five minute walk from Darling Harbour, where we walked to from dinner. We had spare time for three hours, where we ate dinner, watched the light show, shopped and enjoyed ourselves. The next morning some people looked like walking zombies, now knowing that having only about twelve hours sleep for three nights wasn ' t such a good idea after all.

Today was unfortunately our last day, and we travelled by monorail everywhere. First stop was the Sydney Aquarium, which was a bit terrifying for a few people with sharks swimming over their heads. Next was the Centrepoint Tower, Powerhouse Museum , then back to Darling Harbour for lunch, and a walk through Chinatown.

While having such a good time we lost track of time and had to run to the ferry which took us to Manly. Fortunately we had a smooth ride which, over the past couple of years, had not been the same for other year levels. Manly was an interesting place, with beaches and more shops, which of course we had to take advantage of. As

we were coming back on the ferry the sun was setting and we just admired the beautiful surroundings Sydney has on it's bay line like, Opera House, Harbour Bridge, Taronga Zoo, and some of the mansions.

Peter, our bus driver, and the bus were there waiting to take us to the airport, We were stuck in peak hour traffic on the way to the airport, but still got there in plenty of time. Waiting for the plane, some were all worn out, but could not fall asleep because were having such a great time.

Unfortunately our camp had to end but fortunately it was a successful camp enjoyed by all.

C.L.C. Debating in 1997. There were two highlights for this year: the large number of Year Eight teams in the D Grade competition (usually for Year Nines) and C.L.C.'s winning of a Regional Best Speaker Award. Another feature 'of the year perhaps reflects the on-going perceived level of stress in the V.C.E.: we had no year eleven or twelve teams, with the increasing number of year eleven students attempting year twelve subjects a possible factor.

Sally Wilkinson debated in the D5 Year 9 team which won all four debates it was able to (an unfortunate Round two forfeit cost them a play-off berth) Sally scored two "Best Speaker" awards in Rounds 1 and five, and so impressed the regional adjudicators that she won the Loyola Region's Award.

The C2 team of Kate Bolmat (Captain) Megan Cosgriff, Belinda Haines, Monique Warrilow, Claire Pitcher and Christine Jowett won five regular session debates (including one by forfeit), but met their match in the first round play-off. Megan and Belinda excelled with two "Best Speaker" awards.

Our D 1 team of Fiona Shaw, Emily Strickland, Mirna Abouzeid, Lisa Madafferi, Davina Hanlon and Nicole Leech repeated their 1996 achievement of qualifying for the play-offs with four wins (and a bye) In their play-off debate, they debated very well as a team but didn't sufficiently impress their adjudicators.

Our other D Grade teams from Year eight had a sprinkling of wins against their generally older opponents. Of our other two Year ten teams (Cl and C3) Maree Ioannou's achievement in being twice nominated as "Best Speaker" was a highlight.

Debating in 1997 maintained overall the momentum it received in 1989 when Messrs Salmic and Spiller renewed our participation in the Debaters' Association's . School Competition. With so many teams from the middle and junior Schools, it should continue to prosper in its own unassuming way.

It has been a slow year for the Social Justice Group as we had to adjust to the departure of Ms Ricketts. We thank her for establishing the Social Justice Group which examines issues that confront us in our aim for a more just society and world.

We thank Mr Nilsson for taking on Ms Ricketts role. We have had some great fund-raising activities throughout semester one- such as several casual clothes days for example - "Go casual for a cause day" and with the SRC we participated in the "Simply Sharing Food Collection". Our efforts resulted in a wonderful amount of food and money which was distributed between Eltham Food Share and Scared Heart Mission, St. Kilda. The following is part of a letter we received from the secretary of Eltham Food Share.

"We are delighted that local people, especially our schools, are still supporting our service to assist their neighbours in difficulty. Unfortunately, there are still very many people who need this help; we packed 122 parcels in May, for 405 people, 86 in June, and over 97 parcels had been given out at the start of August (over 300 people) .... " Thank you to all our trustworthy members long-standing and new who helped us this year. Your support is greatly appreciated. Once again we say that this year has been great and we look forward to an even better one for the "Social Justice Group" next year.

C.L.C. Book Club As members of the C.L.C. book club we enjoy meeting on day 4 every fortnight to discuss books, prepare activities and write to authors. We have had the experience of recommending books to others and helping to select books for purchase. We have also created displays to promote Book Week and arranged competitions for students to compete in. New members are always welcome and we hope to see lots of you next year.

Lunch -time Sport For our Communication project, Kate Moloney and I organised a lunchtime Volleyball tournament. The four houses, Marita, Loyala, Aikenhead and Vincentia rotated competing against each other. The final saw Marita take on Aikenhead, with Aikenhead winning by a very small margin , just before the final whistle.

This lunchtime sport activity was just one of the many on offer to students. Others include tennis, soccer and badminton just to name a few.

All the girls involved showed excellent sportswomanship in their participation, Marita in particular had a great team spirit.

Gongratulations to all groups who got involved in lunchtime sport. Your participation was much appreciated.

Social Justice Group

For the first time in the history of Catholic Ladies' College an Equestrian team was formed.

Our team competed in the Victorian Inter-school Equestrian Competition on the twenty-seventh of March this year. We were lucky enough to be able to enter two teams which included girls from years seven to eleven.

TeamA Judi Chambeyron, Kate Bolmat(Captain) Stella Carmody and Kate Lanaghan.

TeamB Jessica Wadge, Claire Hyland, Vanessa Zorzut and Liz Cullen who was unfortunately injured before the day.

The competition was held at the Victorian Equestrian Centre in Upper Beaconsfield. This meant a very early morning for competitors supporters, and horses! There were over 100 competitors competing in six skilled disciplines.

All competitors rode extremely well all day and overall our A team was placed sixth. This qualified the team for the State finals on April 12. Judi was third in the individual section and also qualified for the State finals!

There were thirty schools involved in the finals and every section was hotly contested. After an extremely long day of tough competition Catholic Ladies' College achieved numerous placings but was unplaced as a team.

Overall the Equestrian Team was a great success which could not have been achieved without the support of Miss Hick, parents, friends and strappers.

We are looking forward to more great successes in 1998.

Future Problem Solving What problems could occur if everyone lived in small complexes completely run by computers? If extra-terrestrial life made contact with us? If we lived in a completely cashless society?

Throughout terms one two and three, several Future Problem Solving teams have been pondering these questions. There are four team members in each team and the members come from Years Seven to Nine.

For each Future Situation, every group has to complete a booklet. The booklet consists of twenty problems that could possibly occur. The team then choose one of these problems.

This is called the underlying problem. After this they have to create twenty solutions for this problem. The best solution is then picked based on five criteria. They then make a grid on which the ten best solutions are marked, and the best one is decided by using the selected criteria. Last of all, they have to write an elaboration of the best solution, showing exactly how it would be put into action. The first two booklets can be done over a couple of weeks, but the last and most important booklet must be done in two hours. The booklets, when finished, are sent off and marked by a judge who also marks four other booklets. The teams in each section are then told if they have been granted a place.

C.L.C. 's teams did quite well, with some teams getting consistently high scores. The two hour booklet is slightly different as it is actually a qualification booklet for the finals of " Future Problem Solving".

This year our Year Eight F.P.S. team made it through to these finals, which is a first for C.L.C. The team consisted of Claire Hyland, Taryn Bates, Emily Reardon and Melissa Cusick.

They will be travelling to Geelong for the finals, which are run over October the 17th, 18th and 19th, which are a Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. On the Friday they will spend the day

actually doing their booklet. On the Saturday they will be going to a movie and meet competitors from other states. On the Sunday they will be performing a skit that is connected to the situation they developed on the Friday . We wish them the best of luck!

Future Problem Solving is a lot of fun and is a great extracurricular activity to get involved in if you are looking for a challenge and have a BIG imagination. Perhaps we' ll see you next year!

Leah Strauch Year 7

Tournament Of Minds Tournament of Minds is a program which runs for six weeks and is open to students from Years Seven to Ten. The program has three sections - Maths/Engineering, Social Science, and English literature.

This year we entered three groups of seven, each group doing a different section. Team One was entered into "Rota-Quota" .

It was about Slangos coming and ruining the village and what Rota Quota did to protect the village. Team Two did a "Test of Time" which was about a time machine and how things changed after going back in History. Team Three had to build a device which turned itself off after a minute without physical contact.

Congratulations to Team Two who won a special award for their outstanding skill in spontaneous problem solving.

Australian Maths Competition The A.M.C. which attracts over half a million entrants Australia wide was held in June this year. This competition which is designed for the average maths student presents a question paper that includes a number of mathetical problems related to everyday situations.

C.L.C. students from all year levels participated and the school was very pleased to announce that Leah Strauch of year seven was awarded a prize (a cheque for $30) and a "Special Achievement Certificate in the Junior Division", Leah gained a percentile ranking of 99. Congratulations.

When the reports were completed they were marked initially

by Mr Morgan and Mrs Westerman. They were then sent away to the State Challenge directors.

Maths Challenge Girls in years eight, nine and ten participated in this problem solving competition. Students were asked to solve six difficult problems, and to write a report on each . The last two problems could be solved with the help of a partner, but otherwise students were asked to work individually. There were two periods alloted for students to work together when they could ask teachers for clarification of tasks, but all other work was done by the students in their own time.

In Term two all year sevens and eights worked either in small groups or on individual projects for the "Mathematics Talent Quest". Topics ranged from The Australian Open, basketball in Eltham, the popularity of different brands of make-up to our recent spectacular summer. Six of these projects were selected to enter the Victorian final in July.

Victorian Schoolgirls' Netball Tournament Four Catholic Ladies' College teams competed in this Statewide competition with over 800 teams entered. Our girls competed on Tuesday August 12 against teams from Geelong, Pakenham, Woodend, Sale, Bairnsdale, weeribee, Wesley College, Drysdate and Luther College.

Our teams achieved the following results; Years 11 and 12 team finished 3rd in their section . Year 9 and I 0 team finished 5th. Year 8 finished 4th. Year 7 won their section and moved on to the final rounds of the tournament.

Jennifer Maher Year 11

Nacara Constance, Vincentia Intermediate Captain, has recently returned from America where she had been selected to compete in long distance running against students from high schools in cities such as California and New York. I had the chance to ask Nacara a few questions about her running career.

Jennifer Maher, Year eleven , is a distinguished swimmer who after making the State finals, qualified for the Nationals for both her freestyle swimming and synchronised swimming.

What exactly did you go to America for?

I went to America to improve my running skills, and to see if I could compete against people over the other side of the world.

How did you get selected to compete over in America?

When I was running at Olympic Park for school, the officials recorded my time on their computer. Then a couple of months later I received a letter in the mail asking me if I'd like to go overseas and compete.

Who did you go with?

I went with the International Athletes Exchange, and I was one of forty students from across Victoria, to be chosen.

How did you get the money to go?

I sold chocolates at tennis and at school, but I didn't have enough money, so I paid the rest with the money I had earned from working at McDonalds.

How old were you when you started running?

I was in grade four, I ran in the school cross country, and I came third. Then I went on to the zone cross country and decided then that I wanted to do more running.

When did you start competing?

The first time I competed in running was in year seven, when I joined the Diamond Valley Athletics Club.

What is your regular training session?

I used to run with my Dad, for a couple ofkms a week, but now I am trying to improve my distance running by running around Eltham about four times a week.

Jennifer is continually breaking her own records at our school sports, but also slashed an incredible ten seconds from her 1OOm freestyle record.

This year Jennifer was unable to attend the school's swimming carnival because she was in Sydney swimming in the National Championships. Although Jennifer did not perform as well as expected, the Nationals proved to be a great experience for herafter all just being there is a great achievement!

This year after being a member of a synchronised swimming team for only a year and a half Jennifer and her team made it to the National Titles held in Perth where they came second out of all the teams in Australia.

We congratulate Jennifer on her fabulous achievements and wish her luck for the future.

Victorian Schools Relay Championships Congratulations to the Year 10 relay team who took part in the Victorian Schools Relay Championships on August 6. The girls competed against twenty-five other schools in the under 17 age group, placing third in their heat with a time of 53.0seconds. This gained them a place in the finals and they finished 6th with a time of 53. l seconds, an excellent result after months of training. Congratulations to Megan Cosgriff, Siobhan Robinson, Nacara Constance and Cody Moore.

After weeks of intense rehearsals the day finally came when I would sing on the centre stage at the AFL Grandfinal. I got involved in the production through the Australian Girls' Choir.

It was a fantastic experience to sing with all the famous stars, like Marina Prior and Tommy Emmanual. In fact I ended up having a conversation with Tommy Emmmanual about "minties!"- of all topics!? I didn 't complain about chatting to Nathan Cavilerie either! Overall, the atmosphere of the crowd on the day was overwhelming and I am very proud to have been part of this wonderful event Katie Weston Year 9

Another of our multi-talented students is Kathleen Spaul. Not only is Kathleen a talented Singer and song writer but she is also a champion at Judo. Kathleen won a silver medal at the V.A.J.U. State Judo Titles in May of this year and won state selection for the National Titles in Perth in July of this year where she won another silver medal at the Kodokan Judo Titles.

Kathleen played the part of the "Lion" in the school's production of the "Wiz" and has performed with "Le Cattive Bambine" as a singer.

Le Cattive Bambine Katie is also to be congratulated for her performance as the "Tinman" in the school production of"The Wiz". She is also a member of the "Le Cattive Bambine" where she has written numbers and performed as a singer.

In June of this year Kathleen and other members of Le Cattive Bambine spent a profitable and enjoyable session performing to and "jamming" with members of a similar band from Billanook College. Thanks go to Miss Kitchen (from C.L. C.) and Paul Cotton who co-ordinates the Billanook Band for organising this event. Thanks also to Miss Kitchen and the band for the many exciting, enjoyable performances given by "Le Cattive Bambine".

They have had many valuable experiences too, such as their performance at the Yarra Plenty "Music Fest '97", the free drum workshop led by the drummer from the "Black Sorrows"and the cutting of their first CD. "Cinque Canzone". Congratulations to all the members of this band.

Going for gold I stepped onto the mezzanine floor and gave an evil glare to my opponent opposite me. I could feel my heart thumping with both excitement and apprehension, excitement because the possibility of winning was well within my grasp and apprehension for I didn't know my opponent's moves.

The referee sliced his hand vertically through the air, his decision solemn and final.

The fight had begun.

My mind was an abundance of muddled thoughts and feelings all directed at winning.

I blocked out everything around me and remembered my coach's last words, " You've done the training, you know you can do it, give it your best and have fun ". With this in mind I remembered a quote from a Bruce Lee movie "act like water seem weak but when your mind joins strongly be fierce as water can be".

With these inspiring words I regained all cohfidence and leapt up. This time my kicks were accurate and on target. My score kept rising and it wasn't until the bell rang that I calmed down and pulled my helmet off. I looked across at the other girl who had a large crystal tear trickling down the side of her face.

r didn't know whether she was crying because she knew she had lost, or because of the pain r had caused her. r turned and looked at the judge awaiting his decision.

The referee came over and yanked my arm up. A smile broke out upon my face, the title was mine!

Momentarily my mind slipped back to past memories when I had been in intensive training and preparing for this day. r had been trained to be able to perform under all sorts of circumstances and different situations. We had learnt physical solutions to overcome nerves and to be able to outsmart our opponent and score. I had also meditated and mentally prepared myself so I was equipped with all the skills to enable me to come home with a gold medal strung proudly around my neck.

"Smash" went the protector as I scored dead right in the centre of her guard. I could hear the cheers of the spectators. A point was added to my score. My opponent hesitated momentarily then charged at me with a head kick. Automatically, without thinking I counter-attacked scoring with a brilliant head kick. The referee parted us, pulling her alongside for a standing eight count. Hana, Du, Sett, Nett, he counted m Korean, his voice barely reaching over the crowd.

My opponent's face was downcast and it was as if, with that one kick, I had shattered her confidence. I knew that if she didn't recover this loss immediately, the fight was over. She looked at me. Hatred filled her eyes, and I could tell that she was mentally concentrating on forming new strategies to beat me.

She wanted revenge.

She came back strong, a pure fighting machine, and began scoring against me. Without warning a kick landed me squarely in the face . I fell.

Looking from the floor I saw my coach mouth across the floor, "Mind over matter. Don't give in"

Congratulations Belinda Belinda won both the under 15 and under 18 sections of the National Taekwondo championships this year.

Advice On How to Handle Parents

If you want to go out and you are afraid that your parents are going to say no then here are a few simple steps to follow to help you persuade their decision!

Step one. A few days before you wish to go out be very helpful around the house, do things that you would normally have to be told to do or do things that you would never do, but be careful not to be obvious that you want something.

Step two. Then you have to approach one of your parents.

Choose the one that you wouldn ' t usually ask or the parent that has no real say in what you do.

Step three. Ask nicely by calling your parent "Mummy" or" Daddy", then just saying that you simply want to go out with your friends, not telling your parents where you are going or who exactly you are going with.

Step Eleven. Then all of a sudden take notice of what they are doing, then start to ask harmless questions about every five minutes. Simple questions that you already know th e answer to but you are just out to annoy them and very soon they will start to get p*****.

Step twelve. Now it's time for the kill by saying " Mum (o r Dad) you know how you said no about me going out, well is there any possible way I could change your mind?" Then add these pleases and I promise that I will be good, and if you work on it for a while they will soon let you go out!

But be careful with this information. If parents get their hands on it then it will be the last time any of us will get to go out.

Danielle Meehan Year 9 Step four. If this parent says " ask your mother" or "ask your father" then just do that. Go up to the other parent and ask them. If this parent tells you it's all right with them if it's all right with the other parent then simply tell him or her that the other parent said yes but you were making doubly sure. Then you will be able to go out.

Step five. Sometimes parents get used to this procedure and start to ask questions. If it's simply going out with your friends then it shouldn't be any need to worry, but if you want to go out with your boy friend and your parents don ' t want you or won't let you then you may have to draw them away from the subject. How? Step six If both parents say no it's time for reinforcements.

Don't start to yell and scream as soon as they say no (that comes later) simply try to reason with them by acting like an adult. Discus the matter with them and try to come up with a compromise.

Step seven. But if the answer is still no then leave it ' till the next day then ask again. If by any chance there has been no change of heart then it's time to lay the guilt trip.

Step Eight. Say how unfair it is that they won't let you go out with your friends on a simple and harmless night out and that you really, really want to go out.

Step nine. If all the above doesn ' t work then it's time to exercise those vocal chords, kick, yell and scream tell them how mean they are and that you will never talk to them again and that you will lock yourself in your room and never come out until they have come to their senses and let you go out.

Step ten. But if by any chance your parents are glad that you have locked yourself in your room and you are not annoying them anymore, you are going to have to start the moping.

This is easily done by walking around the house (every two minutes walking through the room your parents are in) looki!Jg sad and making them feel guilty.

HOW TO BE SPICE GIRL Imitations are never as good as the real thing, but I think anyone could be a Spice Girl if they followed some simple instructions. You don 't have to be particularly musical, intelligent, or good looking.

- straighten your hair to the point that when you spin around you may well damage someone' s eyes.

- wear totally posh frocks that come over your thighs. This may seem a little Nun-like but when you sit down you can't have your skirts inching their way up to your navel. That is Sexy Spice's job!

-you ' re the conservative one so you don't have to be quite so acrobatic. Does Princess Diana make her point by a high kick in fluro pants? I don't think so!

SEXY SPICE -try to pose starkers in at least one magazine.

- have like ten different streaks of red through your hair just to emphasise how sizzling your are.

-Skirts should be worn ever so slightly covering the buttocks but don 't feel · restricted to this particular length.

-Purr like a kitten to as many politicians and celebrities as possible and maybe pinch their bums as well for best results.

SPORTY SPICE -needs to have an extensive range of Adidas sportswear in lime green and orange.

-Must bear midriff at all times.

-must have powerful arms and biceps for backflips and the like.

NAUGHTY SPICE - must have piece of metal protruding through tongue.

- afro at least I 5cm in height (a similar look could be achieved by sticking your hand in an electric socket) - leopard skin underwear must be too small, visible and bursting out of clothing.

- this girl is crazy so she must be always pulling stunts such as giving the prime minister a royal wedgie then hurling cake at him, all the while saying totally outrageous things such as "Girl Power" " That Sux" and doing a few high kicks and air punches.

- wear rectangular framed glasses for that intelligent look. It fools everybody!

BABY SPICE - wear your blond hair in spiky pigtails or ringlets and if you are resembling an electrocuted chowowa or a constipated Shirley Temple you're doing something right.

- wear pink and white and gurgle at people when they look at you.

- always punctuate the end of your sentences with a giggle.

Now you are a spice girl with attitude! Go spread the good news to your fellow teeny bopper friends and make the world a better place.

Look I'm sopping wet!" screamed Danielle. " Let me just undo the zip and let the freezing cold air flow in and then we will see who is going to rise and shine", I said.

"You do and you're a dead woman" "Too late! " AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! " screamed Danielle, " It's bloody Antarctica out there! I am not moving from this position" "O yes you are " I said.

Our inaugural Founders ' Day celebration on the Feast of the Assumption, August 15th was a memorable and enjoyable day.

We were privileged to have as guest speaker at our assembly Sr. Annette Cunliffe RSC, Congregation Leader of the Sisters of Charity who recounted for us the story of Mary Aikenhead ' s founding of the Sisters of Charity to provide education for the poor children of Ireland, and that of the Sisters of Charity who came to Australia in 1838 to minister to the convict women. From those beginnings developed the work of the congregation in education, health care and social work which continues today .

Other items at our assembly included a humorous recollection of a ballet class at Catholic Ladies ' College in the sixties, and a splendid exhibition of Irish dancing by Michelle Wicking, Sarah Maher, and Bree Moriarty, Gabrielle Cosgriff's singing of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" from "The Wiz" and the reading by three year eleven students of a Woman ' s Creed.

A shared lunch at each level provided an opportunity for an informal gathering of staff and students and the afternoon 's talent quest revealed an amazing diversity of staff and student talent.

Many thanks to all who shared in making this such a successful day and special thanks to Ms. Mary-Anne Mc Cudden who inspired and planned the day.

This year's production of "The Wiz" was full of energy, excitement, enthusiasm and pride. It was immensly enjoyable to watch and there was a reason why; the students involved in this year's production worked as a team, across all year levels and across all aspects of the show which included acting and dancing, singing and playing instruments, set design and construction, lighting and make-up, sound and choreography through to catering and ushering.

Hours of hard work, commitment and dedication to the task were put in and the fabulous cast and crew made it their show.

The development of skills in performing arts, art, and communication was a pleasure to observe as a staff member, but just as importantly it was the development of friendships between students and between students and staff and parents that will be treasured.

Congratulations to all those involved who made all the hours of hard work worthwhile and a special thanks to those students who took on leadership roles and those dedicated staff and parents without whom there would be no show.

May the magic of the show, the colour, the sets, the glitter, the costumes, the make-up, the songs of hope and dreams and the friendships be treasured memories of a special event.

Without their time and dedication this extrar.urricular activity would not be possible.

Performing Arts at C.L.C. has always been an exciting and rewarding aspect of school life. This year has been no exception, bringing success and satisfaction to all those involved in the many areas of performing arts. The students and staff of 1997 have been extremely dedicated, devoting their positive energy to the goals of the college throughout the year.

Highlighting this year was the school's production of "The Wiz" which was performed in early August. Many hours of work resulted in a fantastic performance, enjoyed by the local community, family and friends. Within the school, other groups and ensembles also worked hard to produce great work. "Le Cattive Bambine", the school's Latin/pop band had a great night early on in the year with the launch of their debut CD, "Cinque Canzoni", This event was truly a success and everyone had an exciting time. Following this, the band also played at the Yarra Plenty Regional Library in association with the 1997 Music Festival.

The V.C.E. Performing Arts evening in May was a work requirement for senior performing arts students. It provided an excellent opportunity for parents and friends to view the senior Drama Solo C.A.T.s and senior Music Solo performances.

C.L.C. has many talented ensembles who have involved themselves in the College's life by playing on Open Day 1997, at the Nilumbik Garden Show and other communal events. They include, "The B Natural Choir", the "Chamber Choir", the "Guitar Ensemble" the "Flute Ensemble" the "Grunge Band" and "Drama Club". C.L.C. also has a new orchestra which is doing very well.

Everyone involved in the Performing Arts this year should be congratulated on their hard work and diligence. Katie Crowle and myself are extremely proud to have had the privilege to be student representatives for the Performing Arts faculty during such a successful year.

German Regional Poetry Competition Congratulations to Kathryn Fitzgerald (Year I 0) who won third place in this competition and Anita Milczuk (Year 8) who won second place at the regional final and who won the honour of representing C.L.C. at the State Finals.

'Wogboys' An enjoyable excursion organised for the Italian students was to see an evening performance of the acclaimed production 'Wogboys'. Despite its seemingly derogatory name, it was hilarious, as it was more of a send-up of males than Italian or Greek communities. However it did also give the audience an insight into the humorous aspects of living in a multicultural society.

After the show we were lucky enough to meet the cast, Vince Colosimo, Alex DimitI'~adis, Nick Giannopoulos and John Baresi, most of whom are also well known TV actors. Vince, who is probably been the most successful screen actor, was also the most down-to- earth, charming and friendly.

Overall, it was a most enjoyable night indeed.

Congratulations to the following girls who were very successful in the Dante Alighieri Society Poetry Competition. Three students made it into the finals - Carla Franzo (Year 10) Vitorria Formica and Nicole Gilmartin (Year 9). Certificates of "Honourable Mention" were also awarded to Daniella Buccella, Lana Kandilakis, and Cody Moore (Year I 0), and Daniella Garreffa, Sarah Gatto, Rachel Palumbo, Natalie Pettolino, Carly Geisler, Alicia Nielsen, Emma O' Sullivan and Fiona Shaw (Year 9).

Exchange Programs with Germany Several of our students have enjoyed or are currently enjoying the experience of living in Germany or are anticipating their time in Germany.

Alise Hewson, Jessica Wiltshire and Renee Stekel will be going to Germany for two months in 1998 with B. J. R. Exchange program . Kate Galea and Michelle Best (year 10) are currently in Germany for two months (BJ.R. Exchange) Dhineli Perera (yearlO) is also currently in Germany for two months but her trip was an Independently organised exchange. Rachel Nolan, and Vanessa Hewson (yearl I) have also spent time in Germany organised by the B.J.R. Exchange program. While Natalie Marsh who went to Switzerland and Sally Collins (who went to Germany) had their trips organised by A .F.S.

We are also happy to have Astrid Mare an exchange student from Norway in our German class for one year. Willkommen Astrid!

Earlier this year several language students from years eight to eleven participated in this Australia wide competition. Students sat two tests: Reading Comprehension, and Listening Comprehension and were awarded certificates of Listening Comprehension and were awarded Certificates of Achievement in both areas according to how well they performed. Level three is the highest level and we would like to congratulate the following girls who attained Level Three in either one or both sections.

Germany

Switzerland

I participated in the A.F.S. International Exchange program to Germany for twelve months during '96-'97.

Going on exchange to Switzerland for a year would have to have been the best year of my life. Sure it was really hard, probably the hardest thing I've ever had to do. But it was also the most rewarding.

I stayed with a wonderful family in the war destroyed East German city of Dresden, close to the borders of the Czech Republic and Poland.

The weather was a little extreme with a winter of temperatures down to -29 degrees centigrade, but it was nice having a white Christmas and trying different winter sports.

School played some part in the exchange year, but it certainly wasn ' t the most important and dominating part. What would stay in my memories for the rest fo my life are the friends, night clubs, cities, holidays and cheese!.

School was a social and cultural event for me because I met a lot of different people and also learnt how to speak and understand the language.

Not only did I learn to speak fluent German, and Swiss Dialect, I also got to see a lot of Europe, including Germany, Italy, Austria, Monarco, and the French Riviera.

The school system had an extremely free environment with co-ed classes, no school uniform and even a beer machine (which came in quite handy!)

I now have a second family with two sisters, and two brothers, who mean a lot to me. I also made a group of lifelong friends, whom I still keep in contact with, and can ' t wait to see again.

Overall my year away was both enjoyable and rewarding and I recommend it to anybody with a sense of adventure and is ready for a real challenge.

Sally Collins Year 12

My exchange organization A.F.S. was a great help. They provided counsellors to whom I could talk whenever I was going through a rough patch, and they organized camps throughout the year, where I made friends with people from all over the world, including Scandinavia, Jamaica, Africa, U.S.A., Italy, Russia and Canada.

I recommend an exchange year to anyone, because it' ll be the best thing you ' ll ever do, and you ' II have the time of your life doing it.

Natalie Marsh Year 12

Host Families It was really great to have the experience of a person from Germany come and stay with me and my family . I became really good friends with Johanna and we had a lot of fun together. She tried to helpme improve my German, especially the swear words!. I can ' t wait until November when I'll be leaving to spend Christmas with Johanna and her famil y in Munich. Hopefully my German will improve when I' m over there.

It was a very enjoyable ten weeks when Kathrin stayed with me and my family in Feburary this year. It was fun showing Kathrin local attractions in Melbourne. We both enjoyed a family trip to Sydney but Kathrin ' s favourite part was the German Exchange Trip to Uluru.

We both had memorable and funny times together and I' m counting down the days until I leave and stay with her for ten weeks in November.

A Golden Dream "I never could have imagined the heartbreak I felt. Not that I ever thought anything like this would happen. But things only happen to other people, that's what I use to think anyway. It's one year to the day that tragedy changed my life forever. Mum ' s finding it hard to cope without Dad and Jazz, Sean too although he was only seven months old. She's been talking about getting a baby-sitter or a nanny or someone like that to help take care of me and keep the house in order. I' m 15 for God 's sake! I've had to make enough changes and sacrifices in my life, I don ' t want some little old lady running around telling me to wash behind my ears and tidying my room so that I don ' t know where everything is anymore. It' s bad enough having my own grandma whinging about horses being too big and dangerous and complaining when I come to greet her in jodhpurs and riding boots rather than a pink frilly dress with a basket of roses. Honestly, those clothes would have been out of date three hundred years ago!

Anyway, back to the nanny. I'd rather be spending my time practising for my flute exam or working Star dancer than have a little granny on my back all the time. It's just not fair. .... ... ... ..

Haley closed the diary quietly. " Wow, poor Tina" she whispered glancing at Kat who sat on the floor opposite her" Kate looked very concerned, " mm ., I hadn't realised things were so bad" Her frown instantly changed into a broad smile as Tina entered the room. "Sorry I took so long, Tammy wouldn't stop barking, she 's so territorial! . By the way, that was your mum on the phone, Haley. She ' ll be here in five minutes. They need you down at the shelter, a new horse has come in.' The shelter Tina was referring to was the R.S.P.C.A. in Burwood and ' they' were a team of volunteers working in the Large Animal department which of course included the girl's favourite animal- the horse. Haley had been working there for just over six months and already practically famous for her kind and gentle ways of mothering sick and abused horses so that the animals gained trust in the young girl immediately. "Oh I hope this one isn ' t as bad as the last case." Haley remembered back a fo rtnight when she'd found an orphaned foal trapped in a wire fence beside its mother's body. Haley and two other members of the rescue team had stayed with the terrified filly until 2.00 am when she was finally cut free but unfortunately the injuries were too severe and the young horse had to be destroyed. Haley snapped back to reality as she heard the car horn outside. "Thanks for lunch Tina. See you tomorrow." The three girls walked outside to see Mrs Mansel's waiting car. Kat waved to Haley. "Good luck with the Horse" " He's in here, Haley," called Mel, who was in charge. Haley followed her friend to the last stall. "You can open the door if you want to but be careful he's petrified.' Haley pulled the top door open slowly then. "Hey boy . It's all right. I'm not going to hurt you." An enormous black colt stood quivering the dark corner. Haley turned to Mel, " What happened to him?" " He was found in a paddock with lash marks and no water supply." Picking up a halter, Haley eased in, talking to the horse in a quiet, soothing voice. The animal snorted and paced the side of the stall. Slowly he moved towards the young girl and stretched out his neck as far as possible. Haley reached up to rub the horse 's nose. Gradually he became calmer and let the halter be slipped over his head. Haley clucked to the colt and began to walk forward. "I don't know how you do it Haley. You can put him in the

paddock if he'll follow you" Melee said in amazement. The black horse very cautiously, stepped past the gate, trailing after Haley, into the wider expanse of the field. For hours on end the young girl spoke reassuringly to the horse and led him around the field, growing in confidence with lap that they covered. Eventually , Haley left him to graze in peace and went to talk with her work mate, Mel. " Mel what are you planning to do with the horse?" Mel thought for a moment. " I'm not sure, Haley. We'll see how he goes and then try to find him a suitable home" "Because I'm thinking, well, I'd have to ask my parents ....but maybe, I might be able to adopt him." She looked questionly at the older girl. Mel smiled, "That might not be such a bad idea Haley, seeing as he trusts you so much already. " I' m not joking! Mum and Dad really said 'yes ' !" Tina and Kat stared at Haley, mouths open. Kat was the first to respond. " Does that mean that you ' re going to have a horse just like us and we can all go riding together?" Haley nodded furiously and Tina squealed with excitement. " We' re moving him out here on Saturday" " It will be so good Haley . Next year we can all enter the Pony Club rallies together. But, I' m not sure how much time I' ll have. Mum ' s having a lady come around twice a week now to help look after me and she doesn't approve of my riding Star Dancer at all," Haley looked at the floor, " Um Tina I know that I shouldn't have but I was reading your diary last week and spoke to Mum about it. She said that anytime you or your Mum need anything you can always come to us." Tina's eyes widened. "You what?" 'Tm really sorry but I couldn ' t help it... .."

Tina's face formed a smile, "It' s all right, Haley. I'm kind of glad you read it, it helps when someone else knows what I'm feeling especially if it involves .. .. um .... ' the accident.' 'The accident' was the car crash that killed Tina' s father, older brother Jarrod and her baby brother Sean. The girls didn't talk about it much but often it was a difficult topic to avoid. Tina looked up, "It's sad though, that Dad 's not going to see you ride this horse. I remember he used to joke about you being such a good rider, that you would go to the Olympics and win the gold medal even without a horse! " Haley put a comforting arm around her friend as the smile faded and the tears began to flow.

"Competitor number five - Haley Mansel and Stolen Thunder" Haley rode into the ring proudly astride her beautiful black, fully grown stallion. As the bell sounded, the crowd silenced. Haley urged her mount into a smooth flowing canter and directed him towards the first jump which was cleared effortlessly.. ... .. .... .. ..... Haley gave her mount all the room he needed and they soared over each obstacle as only a horse of such class knew how. After the last jump as they touched the ground, Stolen Thunder powered on through to the finish line in record time. Wild cheers erupted from the crowd.

Moments later, Haley Mansel was joined by her team mates, Tina Castles, Katherine Brushstone and Melanie Smyth with their now famous horses, Star Dancer, Sky Lark and Prince Edward. In turn, the 'human foursome' bowed their heads to receive Olympic Gold Medals. Tina stepped to the microphone. "This win was for you Dad. We really did make it and not one of us not even Haley, came without a horse! " Claire Hyland Year 8

Year Eight Camp On the morning of the 25th of August, Room 11 and 13 set off upon the trusty mini-bus to "Lake Mountain Ski Resort" The buses trudged plodding up the curved mountain (with a hasty stop for one nauseous traveller!) before we finally reached our destination.

After being fitted in our ever - so - fashionable ski clothes, Frog green jackets, etc., we one again boarded the buses and travelled to the ski lodge. What followed, was a day of fun laughter and falls.

Back at the cabins, we showered and rested our aching bodies.

After a full nights sleep, (well ...... sort of) we were up raring to go. All day we zoomed professionally down the slopes, and even had a few stacks!.

The bus ride home was one with over tired teenagers - some moaning, some sleeping, and others, just plain hyper-active.

The two days of camp supplied many new experiences, good times and was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Lauren Jones Year 8

Poisonous Candy She strutted carelesly down the crowded hallway, turning heads with every step she took. Candy was her name. Girls stared enviously, as they hurled their books into their lockers, jealously marking every page. Guys leaned casually against their lockers.. ..... almost too casually, Ryan thought,as he edged cautiously down the hallway.

Every boy was drooling enough to fill a bib, every girl had her claws out, but Ryan just dawdled along. When you're a new student, it's wise to just blend in .... not be the pair of hot pink hipsters at a funeral.

Remembering this, the timid boy strolled on. Just as Ryan was nearing his locker, an open window carried fresh pollen from spring's glorious gardens inside. Ryan's nostrils twitched tormentingly, and his eyes began to create puddles. With a sudden gust of wind, Ryan's books were blown swiftly from his frail arms, as an explosive sneeze erupted from his nose. His books were spread on the floor, in a mass of papers. Yellow liquid poured out of his nose and dripped down his crimson face. Candy, with her masses of black ringlets and creamy olive complexion was lucky enough to catch most of the sneeze. Snot oozed down her head, quickly demolishing the invisible crown she wore. Her flimsy heels stumbled over the papers, and she plunged to the floor. The whole hallway gasped, before breaking into uncontrollabe laughter. Candy heaved her body up angrily, throwing Ryan an insulted look.

"How dare you trip m~!" she roared so loudly that Queen Elizabeth would have heard, before storming away.

Ryan was mortified and apologetic, but was not given the chance to express his feelings. Humilation summed up his day.

Lauren Jones Year 8

Wormy Ice - Creams!

"Aren't you going to eat that?" my eleven year old brother yelled from the lounge room.

"Um, yeah in a minute" I answered. I stood there gazing at the ice - cream creation my brother had concocted for me.

Questions zoomed around in my head like an out of control helicopter. What if he was trying to poison me? What if he' s trying to get back at me for the fight we had yesterday? What if he's just trying to be nice? Will I hurt his feelings if I don't eat it? What if it tastes disgusting? I had no idea about what I was going to do. I had been making dumb excuses all night just so that I didn't have to eat it. My brother was watching me with challenging eyes so slowly and cautiously I began to draw the ice-cream closer to my mouth, I closed my eyes and then in one quick gulp I swallowed. Almost immediately after that, laughter sprung from the lounge room. Between hysterical laughter my brother managed to yell out,"Ah Ha I put worms in it!" Year Seven Breakfast Ding, ding, ding, the sound of my alarm clock woke me half an hour earlier than usual so I wouldn ' t miss out on the Year Seven breakfast. When I got to school I was happy to see that I wasn't the only funny looking sleepy person in my pyjamas.

Everyone came in their pyjamas at about 8.00 am ready to eat their croissants or fruit buns. Once we got our breakfast we went and got a drink of juice or milk and sat down with a bunch of friends in the Year Seven corridor. By the time the bell went, the carpet had all these crumbs and bits of bread everywhere but it was the teachers' job to clean it up. There was loud music coming from Room Three, so before we went to get our books with our friends we had to find them - they were dancing like mad in room three!

Belinda Cavallin Year 7

BLABBERMOUTH DAY On Tuesday March fourth the Year Sevens had a " Blabbermouth day" It was an interesting and fun day. We had to make blabber food to eat and the best ones won a book. Some of the foods included apple pies with worms hanging out of it, jelly, frogs faces and different sandwiches. We all enjoyed the day although there were many other highlights including music stories and poems.

CENTRE FOR EDUCATIONAL AND RESEARCH IN ENVIRONMENTAL STRATEGIES On Friday the sixteenth of May, Year Sevens went on an excursion to C.E.R.E.S. in Brunswick, an environmental reserve built on an old ten acre rubbish tip. Year Sevens participated in different African and Indonesian activities. We went to an Indonesian Village where we learnt to play the Anklung, an Indonesian bamboo instrument.

We also learnt about Wayang Kulit, which are traditional shadow puppets that are used often in Indonesian entertainment.

We went to the African part of the reserve and learnt how to play African Instruments. There were shakers, nnewule, which are cow bells and different types of drums. We played an African game where we danced and chanted around our bags, pretending that they were a successful catch of fish . We made African tea and participated in the crushing of wheat, cinnamon and cloves using a mortar and pestle. The added ingredients were brown sugar and milk. All of the ingredients were added to a pot of boiling water on an outdoor wood fire.

We also made mud bricks in the African part of the reserve. We used picks and shovels to dig a hole. We then added water to make mud. We then put the mud into brick shaped stencils. The mud was left to harden then the stencil was removed leaving a mud brick.

The Our trip to C.E.R.E.S was interesting and enjoyable. information we picked up was extremely useful in our African cultural studies.

Katherine Crea Year 7

Year 7 Outdoor Education On the fifth and seventh of November all year sevens participated in Outdoor Education. The activities on offer were rafting, canoeing, bush walking, cycling and rope course. These two days were enjoyed greatly by all of the year sevens, with only a few complaints about sore arms and legs.

I personally did rafting and canoeing over the two days. The best part of day one was the rapids, which were scary at times.

The best part of day two was having a nice calm paddle down the Yarra, and jumping in at the end.

Overall Outdoor Education taught me to work as a team, and talk thing out before doing them.

Jessica De Angelis Year 7

The Rialto AAAAGHH! ! ! Screamed a lift full of terrified year sevens. AAAAGHHH! !

The lift was now on the tenth, no eleventh no twelth floor, but would it stop? Not yet obvously!. Our ears were popping like mad, everyone kept on screaming and the lift was still going- thirtyseven, thirtyeight- when would we reach the top? A woman's voice was droning out of the speakers installed in the lift- fortyfour, fortyfive- but no-one was listening.

After forty-five seconds of terror, the lift slowed down at the fifty-fith floor and we stepped out - calm, serene, but breathless onto the Rialto Tower's Observation Deck.

It was our first field trip with C.L.C. and all of the Year Sevens were v1s1tmg the Rialto Towers, St. Patrick' s Cathedral and the site of the East Melbourne C.L.C.

The first thing I can remember doing on the observation deck is simply staring. There was a window directly in front of me and I could see all over the city and beyond. I mean, I had realized that the Rialto was very tall, but not this tall!

It towered over almost every other building in the city.

After the first quick gasps, everyone got down to work. We had many worksheets to do and not that much time. Having to do those sheets made me notice some things such as the roof-top kindergarten on Collins Street, and the large yellow sculpture in Batman Park, which we later visited.

After visiting the Rialto we walked to the C.L.C. site via Batman Park, where we had lunch. It was pretty dismal for a csite that was once a great school, as it was a vacent lot being used for carparking. The only things left from the school were the gate and a brick wall.

THE BIG STEP From Primary school to Secondary school was or is a very big step.

Coming from easy going classes and homework like crosswords and finishing little bits of work from classtime to a huge school with over an hours homework nearly every night from different subjects. Coming from a school where you do maths whenever and science once a week to where you have planners and timetables to remind you that you have two periods of ceramics this morning and Indonesian INT before lunch and so on. Hey you guys it' s not as easy as you think.

I was so happy coming to C.L.C. a school that I had heard great and interesting comments about and I can tell you that most of these comments are true. It is big, great and it is exciting. We also have a lot of homework!

The first few weeks were hard trying to get used to the bell times, trying not to get lost and remembering where everything is, but we managed.

The first few weeks we got let off if we were late for class or if we forgot a special book for that class, but that soon changed.

After about three weeks the " Peer Support" program started. Every year seven was involved in this program. It was especially great to have it in year seven because you got to know and got friendly with the other year sevens in your group. The year ten group leaders helped us to settle in to C.L.C. Now we're into term three or should I say the term of hard work. Well that's what the teachers tell us. If we have coped this far I' m sure we cope all the way as we strive for year eight.

But this isn't possible, my baby died in hospital.

Just a simple bit of machinery, to start his heart pumping, wouldn't even have been a help to him.

So he left us all to mourn ..... my child was a stillborn.

After dreams of having a child, and dreams of making a familymy time finally came.

But now my child is dead .....

I have only bad memories in my head.

We prayed that people would 'survive' But no body was pulled out alive.

He's been given a lot of fame.

The reason he is filled with a lot of tears, Is that he lost his wife of two years.

Although many people are to be laid in a grave, Amidst this terrible tragedy, one man was saved.

Gown of the Year 1997 This glamorous competition established in 1953 has provided new Australian designers with the opportunity to demonstrate their talent, imagination and creativity for the past forty years and to make themselves known to fashion houses and the public in general.

1964-Winner.

Designer: Nora Peters The simplest basic crochet stitch was used to create the fabric for this gown - handcrafted to shape a spectacular design in a lurex blend yarn.

Each year the competition is judged over several weeks with hundreds of dresses being viewed by the public and judges. Finally a selection of seven to eight dress for each section are chosen for the finals with "The Gown " selected from these.

This year's show provide the audience with a sumptuous array of garments from casual wear to wedding dresses inspiring budding designers or providing an indulgent "night -out" for the girls ( as 99% of the audience were females) at the Restaurants Chaucers and Rem brand ts.

However it must also be mentioned that many charity groups have benefited from this event.

All profits go to charity and literally millions of dollars have been raised for organisations ranging from the Smith Family to the Red Cross, from Lions Clubs to local hospitals and school auxiliaries.

Alicia Fleming Year 11 who won "The Mannequin Elect Competition" run by "The Mannequins and Models Division of the S.D.A.(Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees' Association) was the youngest entrant (ages ranged from 16 to 23) in the competition . Her success in this competition led to her selection by the " Mannequins and Models Division of the S.D A. ' and ' Gown of The Year ' designers as one of the models for the 1997 show.

1980 Winner Designer: John Claringbold.

This gown based on a straight sheath in beige wool achieved magical results by the layers of silk fringing that swing gently, and the sheen of ,these fine silken cords playing tricks of light and shade. Alicia wore this gown in the Retrospective Section of The 1997 " Gown of the Year"

Alicia was lucky enough not only to model in the preliminary shows but also in the very popular final shows. Several of the dresses Alicia modelled in the preliminary parades were selected fo r th e finals testimony to her poise and professionalism. Alicia's poise and grace can also be attributed to the fact that she is an accomplished dancer and her well toned body highlighted the design of the garments.

The parades have been an exciting experience for Alicia who had to make the difficult decision not to go on the National tour with "The Gown of The Year" but to keep up her attendances and studies at school.

Healthier Nation Symposium, Deakin University (Faculty of Health and behavioural Science) 1st to the 3rd of October 1997 54 students from all over Victoria and I received a scholarship to Deakin University for three days. It was a symposium for a healthier nation and also to experience uni life. We never stopped working from the time we got there until the day we went home. We had keynote lectures by David Parkin (Carlton Football Club coach). He enthused us to become motivated and discussed how he motivates his team . Christopher J Shen was a keynote speaker on mental toughness, he discussed how after all the physical training the mental toughness is what pushes you to go for gold! And you are the only one who can limit yourselt1 We experienced hands - on facilities in nursing - we took blood and gave needles. We went to a celebrity dinner with stars fro m "Neighbours" and national sports champions. During all th is time we also had to organise a twenty minute presentation in groups on a specific health issue. Our group explored the topic of youth suicide. We discovered that it was the number one killer in young males - even higher than the road toll. Other topics were " Body Image'', Winners and Losers in Sport", " Drugs'', and "Medical Technology" During my time there we definitely experienced some Uni life.

On our first day in the Deakin cafe 55 innocent Year 11 students witnessed Karioki on stage with lesbians and drag queens - a sight we weren ' t expecting to see.

After my experience at Deakin I came out more motivated and enthusiastic to reach for the stars. I learnt that the sky is the lim it and to aim for my goals and dreams .

Constitutional Convention 1997 In October of this year, along with appr~ximately I 00 other year 11 students, I attended the fourth state Constitutional Convention at the Parliament of Victoria.

The students attending the convention represented schools in Melbourne and country Victoria as well as the three school sectors.

The main presentations were made in the Legislative Assembly on two main topics. These topics were "should our rights be protected by the Constitution?" and "How should judges be appointed?"

We listened to four speakers including Kim Rubenstein, a lecturer in Constitutional Law, Joseph O' Reilly from Liberty Victoria, Leonie Burke, the member for Prahan and His Honour, Mr Justice Cummins.

The highlight of the day would have to have been the extremely heated argument about the rights of indigenous people, which involved many of us standing up in our places and arguing with others who didn ' t have the same opinions as us, in true parliamentary fashion . Or perhaps it was when a boy from Mill Park Secondary College tried to recruit me to the Young Liberals, handing me an enormous pile of pamphlets to read in my own spare time.

Or maybe it was when a boy in my discussion group told us in a very matter-of-fact tone that Pauline Hansen is, and I quote, "a bloody legend. She should be Prime Minister ..... .. " No actually, it was definitely being able to yell in parliament.

This was a great experience for me, and I recommend that any Year l 0 students who get the opportunity to get involved, do so. Just finally I'd like to thank Mrs Kelly for organising this and encouraging me to get involved.

Port Fairy The car purred to a halt in its customary parking space outside the block of beach flats, where a dilapidated metal plate scrawled with the number six hung from one loose nail on the wall in front. Jolted awake, I wearily opened my bleary eyes to the late afternoon sun and cursed inwardly with the realisation that I had fallen asleep and missed all the favourite landmarks of our drive into Port Fairy. Suppressing a sigh, I followed my parents and brother out of the car. Mum unlocked the boot and doubtfully surveyed its contents.

"We ' ll need some bread, milk .... " "I'll go and get it" Gratefully I accepted this minor shopping mission. It would give me a chance to get my mind into gear again, to reorientate myself in this familiar landscape. A few coins jingling merrily in my pocket, I made my way out of the car park and onto the street, stepping over the faded green guarding chain, the broken links of which were bound together with rusted wire in many places. My feet plodded rhythmically as I ambled over the cracked asphalt path past the caravan park. Already my usual frantic pace had been sedated to complement the relaxed, fluid flowing of my thoughts. There was no hurry. It's not like that in Port Fairy.

Leaving the footpath behind, I crossed the stout old bridge over the Moyne River. To my right was a broad sweep of flat marshes where a few black swans pottered about in the shallows, and two distant fishermen sat · in peaceful contemplation as they waited for a bite. I turned my head to the other side of the bridge and gazed along the wharf, where a spindly forest of masts and sails ran alongside the greyed planks of the jetty. The waterfront, which glowed gold at sunset and sparkled silver at dawn, had become vaguely fashionable a few years ago and now a scattering of salubrious new houses, matched by their gleaming yachts, sat alongside dilapidated holiday homes and barnacle - encrusted boats.

Further along, the wide grass verge narrowed as I approached the denser region of the town, packed with the immovable stone cottages of the whalers who had established Port Fairy under the ancient Norfolk Island pines which towered overhead. The trees whip-like needles littered the ground and their faint aroma wafted on the air. I passed the town 's three old hotels, set close together on the main street. Dated with chipped paint and interiors carpeted in the lurid greens, browns and oranges of another era, none of them would look inviting to a passing traveller. But later, when the dark set in and the wild winds began to howl through corrugated roofs, bite the unsuspecting, scorched summer faces and claw the treetops in earnest, the little pubs would become havens of warmth and soft golden light. Families would gather around rickety wooden tables in the bistro, and the local regulars would pull up a bar stool and settle in for the night with their mates, laughing over old memories with twinkling eyes in wrinkled faces: I waved a greeting as I recognised one of the waitresses from The Stump, who stood on the footpath painstakingly chalking the Specials menu on a weather-beaten She always remembered what my finicky blackboard. younger brother ordered when we came here. Year after year, his tastes never varied.

A tinny bell jangled as I en.tered the Heritage Milk Bar, where the chatty proprietor and his wife beamed a welcome. As I waited patiently for my change, they proceeded to detail the events which had taken place in our family's twelve months absence. I had to suppress a grin of amusement - the most exciting thing that had happened to Port Fairy in the last year was the establishment of a new surf shop around the comer.

Stepping outside onto the footpath with a bag of groceries, I inhaled the sharp, evocative scent of the sea on the light wind, and decided to take the long way home.

I slid my shoes off when I reached the bottom of the rugged stone blocks which led the way down to the beach, and strode forward with a spring in my step. The fine, pale sand was still warm as it slid between my toes, though a breeze was already beginning to whip along the shore with a forcefulness that send little flurries of sand scudding along the dunes. The dove grey expanse of ocean, forming itself into frothy ripples that lapped gently at the coast, reflected the vast marbled sky.

Twilight was now descending and most of the bright beach towel brigade had left, except for one man with his dog trotting placidly at his heels, and a little girl, excitedly exploring the protected rocky bay that I had learned to swim in as a child. Her snowy- haired grandmother sat nearby on a solid deck chair, hands folded over her bulky form. She watched her charge complacently, with a satisfied smile which seemed to radiate her wisdom and contentment. I smiled too as the girl skipped and splashed through in her pink bathers, chasing lithe little fish in fruitless circles, with sand speckling her sun-gilded hair. Would she still love this place in years to come, as I had done? I imagined the girl growing older, her bubbling laughter replaced with a cool smile as the reserve of age and the restrictions of social conventions concealed her natural liveliness. So many families travelled the familiar highways and the smaller, winding roads to this same destination year after year, each small group adhering unconsciously to a similar pattern. Children grew older, their faces rapidly moulding into their inevitable cast of adulthood their once vibrant parents slowing with age. When offsprin~ moved on or some other reason stopped them returning, they would be supplanted by new groups, repeating the chain of events.

It had seen the phases and fluctuations of so many lives, but Port Fairy never really changed. The sand and the sea and the blustery winds had been here time out of mind, and would continue to form a picturesque background while countless human dramas and trivialities played themselves out with the passing of the seasons; different faces, new words each time, but all episodes staying essentially the same as those which had resolved themselves decades before.

This would be the last that my family would savour the rituals of our annual seaside escape: the tradition would be terminated when I turned eighteen. Yet I was not sad. I knew the atmosphere, the pure tranquillity of the place would compel me to return, if not in quite the usual way or with all the people of before. And when I did come back, I knew my beloved Port Fairy, even if partially altered on the outside, would still feel exactly the same.

Year 12 Camp: Mt. Macedon

"A Weird Job"

From the 25-28 February, 1997 half of Year 12 was carted off (although perhaps not unwillingly) to Mt. Macedon for a 3 day camp of self-awareness and spiritual healing. The weather was beautiful for most of the time, which meant that we could carry out some of the activities in the sprawling grounds of the beautiful old house in which we lived.

" What a weird job" was all of my friends first reaction to what I said when I told them I wanted to be a Chick Sexer.

These days they don't bat an eyelid if I happen to mention the genital eminence of a day old chick in the middle of a conversation.

At the beginning of the camp we were given a journal in which we were to write (as if we needed any more of that after starting Year 12!) about ourselves, our feelings and the group. The ' group ' was a selected number of about six Year 12' s and one teacher, who met together during certain times in a particular place to talk about what we had been di scussing as a main group. These discussions included themes such as growing up and the particular talents and gifts of each person. At the end of the camp we were given the task of writing a positive letter in each other' s journal. These were quite surprising for some, as people di scovered that the way they saw themselves was different to the way others see them .

Unlike the younger years, where camp is constantly bustling with activity, the Year 12's were given some free time, which of course, we put to extreme good use! These included a walk up Mt. Macedon, which you never really know how high or steep it is until you reach the top! As well as the watching of ' Ricki Lake ', playing sardines, sitting around the ' smoking hedge ' smoking and nattering, and trying to forget that you were actually in Year 12 and that you did have to go back to school the next week!

The Year 12 Camp ended with a very beautiful and very moving Mass on the Thursday night, which was before the likes of the talent quest! During this Mass, we gave thanks fo r being able to take time out and share this time as a group and get to know others in our year a bit better. On behalf of all the Year 12 students, I would like to thank all the teachers who participated in both camps and gave us such encouragement during that very special week.

Secondly, to Mr. Morgan, who not only managed to share his birthday with us (29th February) but also painstakingly organised the whole thing.

Tessa Sibbel Year 12

"How did you find that job?" is a popular question and that is what Don Bourke of "Bourke' s Backyard" asked me when I did a segment with him and three fellow chick sexers recently . It all started when I was given a book on chick sexing. After reading the book (which was a history of the topic rather than a practical teaching text on how to be a chicken sexer) I decided I would like to have a career in chick sexing. Finding anyone who even knew what chick sexing was is hard enough but finding someone to teach me was near on impossible. Luckily there were a lot of names in my chick sexing ' bible ' and I found a man (Charlie Bode) who lived in Eltham at the time he learnt chick sexing in 1934. After a bit of detective work and letter writing to find him I was able to convince Charlie to teach me the art of chick sexing.

After one year of sexing chickens I have discovered that the more I do it, the more I like it. Every chicken is a challenge. 1 have also discovered that for me, my career prospects are very good. I am the only person learning in Australia and many of the chick sexers currently working will be retiring shortly, not because of lack of work but they are just getting to old for it.

Chick sexing is a good career for girls as they have nimble hands which is necessary for opening the vents and girls are generally gentler than boys, so they care for the chicks they are sexing. It is definitely not everyone ' s cup of tea but an incredibly worthwhile and satisfying career for those choosing to pursue it.

Dearna McKay Year 12

Toastmaster International - Public Speaking and Youth Leadership.

In Second Term Catholic Ladies' College, in conjunction with Marcellin College, Bulleen offered a program to develop the speaking and leadership skills of young people in Years Ten and Eleven . By developing these skills, young people are better prepared to meet the demands and challenges of today 's world . The program was designed as a series of eight workshops, each lasting two hours. Participants learnt how to prepare and present a speech, how to evaluate, and also to develop effective listening skills. By the end of the eight sessions students had developed their self-confidence and inter-personal communication skills. These skills will remain with them and be useful to them for the rest of their lives.

Laura Pelka as best speaker was requested to speak to fifty Eltham Rotarians.

Her chosen topic was "Capital Punishment" Laura was able to very clearly demonstrate her speaking skills, answer questions and generally represent herself extremely well in the wider community.

Congratulations Laura on a job well done!

More than one hundred student leaders participated in this workshop. The afternoon began with a task where random groups were asked to construct a tower from pipe cleaners and other simple materials. This task had to be completed in complete silence forcing students to adopt other form s of communication and to be more sensitive to the feelings/communication of others.

During the program students were asked to reflect on the leadership roles they had undertaken, and to identify goals and difficulties which they may reasonably expect to face in the performance of their duties. Each group of leaders was asked to select goals relevant to their leadership group and to develop a set of actions which might assist them in bringing their ideas to fruition. They were then asked to develop and record an action plan which could be set in place in the following days and weeks.

An informal lunch of hot pizza and cordial eaten and drunk in the pleasant grounds of the Eltham Community Centre provide a refreshing break and an opportunity for informal conversation and exchange of ideas on how the day was progressing.

A highlight of the workshop was a visit by Ms. Jenny Macklin, Federal MHR for Jaga Jaga who spoke to the girls about women in leadership. She spoke about some of the difficulties encountered by woman in leadership positions and shared some of her experiences in the Parliament. Ms. Macklin spent some time with the students as they worked in groups and encouraged them to develop strategies which would see their good ideas converted into reality. Renee O'Donovan, the S.R.C. President for 1997, thanked Ms. Macklin on behalf of all present and for her generosity and interest.

The leadership workshop was once again a great success with each girl receiving a certificate acknowledging her leadership role and participation.

Principal After weeks of planing by the leadership committee (Mrs Bassett, Mrs Kelly, Mrs Warrell, Mrs Willis, and Mr.Blake) led by Ms Ricketts, and the election of student leaders after due consideration of their future roles by their peers, a wofkshop was held at the Eltham Community Centre to allow them to further identify their roles.
