other Tim Horlock The school community was disappointed to hear that Father Tim Horlock has decided to take time off and will not be the school chaplian next year.

His boyish good looks and the strong splrltual support he gave to both students and staff wlll be missed greatly.

Father Tim brought great dignity and a sense of occasion and spirituality to all the services he performed. He was just at home celebrating . Mass for year 12 students around a bonfire as he was officiating at the funeral of a beloved member of the school community.

We wish him well In his decisions for the future.

SRC PRESIDENTS REPORT

As SRC President for 1995, I have faced challenges beyond my wildest expectations - the most

notable being, bribing girls to turn up to meetings! I have learnt many things from being in such a position, including how many steps it takes to get to the office and how to successfully pry open an abundance of exciting; albeit meaningless - letters.

I have also learnt that the SRC is able to achieve many goals when it puts its mind to it. Some of these include: selling red noses for research into SIDS, hundreds of daffodils for the anti-cancer .. council, and for the girls appetites, a doughnut day for the Royal Children's Hospital "Good Friday Appeal". We have also managed to have a casual clothes day each term - with the money raised J'1 V going towards places such as the Eltham Foods hare Organisatiol'\ However, one of the most fulfilling achievements for all, was snaring the Coke machine. For those parents who do not as yet know about it, this is where your daughter's pocket money is going.!

Special thanks to Rachael Croall for her magnificent effort on this project.

Another world-first for CLC was the Year 12 activities day with the Paradians (yes, boys). This proved to be an enlightening experience, with the Parade jazz Band and our own Soul Promise playing, as well as a competitive trivia quiz and an even more competitive volleyball tournament being conducted. Perhaps it will become tradition for future year 12s?

., Whilst the SRC has accomplished many feats, it has not done it alone. I must acknowledge the .. help of various groups throughout the school, in particular the Social justice Group, for working in conjunction with the SRC in numerous fundraising activities. I must also thank various~ . individuals within the school, including the office ladies for their kind words and their frequent · . : support unending his for Morgan Mr meetings, at voice loud and faxing, Mr Toohey for his input · and continual cuteness, and the SRC reps - particularly the Year 12 reps - who worked tirelessly to ever. successful most the was SRC year's ensure that this And now, as I pass over my responsibilities of SRC President, I wish my successor the very best of luck, and hope that her time is as momentous and satisfying as mine has been.

FAREWELL TO SR. JOAN STAPLETON It is with regret that we bid a fond farewell to Sr. Joan Stapleton. Sr. Joan has had two ierms of appointment to C.L.C. - a total of sixteen years. As well as teaching English and Religious Education, she has undertaken the roles of Year Nine Co-ordinator and Head of Religious Education, and since 1991 has been a member of the College Administration Team. In 1993, Sr. Joan was appointed to the Board of Directors of the College.

Sr. Joan's gentle presence has been enormously important to all members of the College community, both for her own quiet strength and deep faith, and for the very human and caring face of the Sisters of Charity which she has been in the College.

For many staff and students she has been a source of support and hope in times of worry and grief, and she has always taken a personal interest in those students who were experiencing difficulties at home or at school. The Liturgical life of the College has been enriched by Sr. Joan's creativity and As a well-informed, loyal and unwavering prayerfulness, together with a keen sense of occasion. supporter of the Collingwood Football Club, Sr. Joan has been a key contributor to the Friday prematch and Monday post-mortem discussions in the staff room.

We thank God for the gift that Sr. Joan has been to us, especially her commitment to, and love for the C.L.C. community, and we ask him to Bless her abundantly.

PERl'=ORMING EVENING The Performing Arts evening gave parents and friends an opportunity to see what a wealth .o f talent in music, drama and dance we have In the school. Items ranged from Year 7 class drama to year 12 Solo Performance C.A.T. sin both music and drama . The evening included performances from the Soul Band and Senior Ensemble.

Congratulations to all performers on their standard of excellence and thanks to the Performing Arts staff.

Nillumbik Art Show Once a year the Nillumbik Council holds a Youth Art Show, consisting of works from young people in Each Tuesday for three months the Committee of students including three from C.L.C. met the Shire . at the Shire Offices and discussed all issues concerning the art show. Other students on the committee came from Eltham Secondary College, and Loyola Secondary College.

Everything had to be organised, from the art work categories, sponsors, prizes, rules of entry, right down to the food and drinks that were going to be served on the night.

The day before the art show we had to sort the works and hang them , which was a challenging but beneficial experience when it was completed. The opening night was successful, well attended, which pleased the committee. Overall it was a worth while experience - one in which I am glad I was able to participate.

An amazing display of pamtmg, pottery, textiles, graphics and drawings were on view for the school community at the Student Art Show held In October . Those who attended the opening were treated to the fine music played by the Senior Orchestra and delicious hors d'hoevres and drinks served by the Catering team.

The Show was officially declared open by Natalie Lysenko an ex-student of C.L.C. who is currently studying architecture at Sydney University.

We partied until the early hours and had a heap of fun!!

All in all, camp has left us with many memories and was a great chance to learn to understand others and appreciate those who We all we'd never really known before. learnt heaps, had a great time and it was a welcome break from school.

The beginning of 1995 saw nine CLC debating teams register for the DAV (Debating Association of Victoria) Schools competition. Dates, venues, topics and opponents were all organised early term one and by round one in March, the teams were ready to begin a rather successful debating year for CLC. Our single year 12 and four year 11 teams were rather experienced in debating. The single year 10 team had been in debating for two years, while the novices for the 1995 were our three year 8 and 9 teams.

The A grade year 12 team began the year debating Throughout the year, we had three secret topics debate which included "Compulsory testing for HIV " and that "The UN should pull out of Bosnia". The team was often acknowledged for its consistency.

Now, for many of the girls, it is the end of four years of debating for CLC. For some, debating will be missed yet for others, it will be a relief not to be faced with the challenge of having one hour to write a ten minute speech!

The year 11 teams were faced with many interesting topics including "Paul Keating is an Australian hero" and "Power grows from the barrel of a gun". The year 11 's had consistent results, with their manner being superior to many of their opponents. Regularly the teams won due to their high scoring manner, with several students receiving the highest points when compared with other debaters.

The year 10 debating team continued to impress many people (and opponents). The team of Nicola Fitzgerald, Alicia Dudley, Alicia Kegele, Lucy Mason, Sarah Mock and Angela O'Meara won four of their five debates including "That we should close the zoos" and an advised topic on weapon control.

Lucy and Alicia Dudley were awarded three best speaker awards between them. Again, this team is a model of team consistency and have a great future ahead in debating.

The CLC D grade teams (year 8 and 9) have begun their debating careers extremely well. Regularly girls were awarded best speaker awards, as their teams won arguing topics such as "Smoking should be banned" and "Brandon is better than Bart". During many of the debates, the students consistently equalled or outscored their opponents in all categories.

As the year · of debating has now finished, all debaters can look back on 1995 and be proud of the ir achievements. This year has highlighted the many talented debaters throughout the school. Hopefull y in the further, no talent will be wasted as debating continues it's success at CLC.

SOCIAL JUSTICE GROUP

"You have been told... what the lord requires of you: Only to do the right and to love goodness, and to walk humbly with your Goer (Micah, 6, 8-9) Inspired by these words of the prophet Micah and by the Sisters of Charity Educational Philosophy which calls for active involvement in creating a more just society, the members of the Social Justice Group meet regularly to promote concern for human rights.

The Social Justice Group was formed in 1993 and membership is open to any student and staff member. The aims of the group ore to raise awareness about issues of social justice, to encourage people to reflect on social justice issues and to do what we can to help. The collective responsibilities of the Group ore to provide information on issues via the daily and weekly bulletins and at assemblies, to keep a notice board of current issues, to invite guest speakers and to organise a range of activities.

The social justice group has instigated a number of fund - raising and awareness - raising activtties. The "Buy a Brick" campaign was organised in response to the devastating earthquakes in India, and the life - shattering floods in North - eastern Victoria in 1994. In conjunction with the S.R.C., casual clothes days have been promoted to support organisations such as St. Kilda Mission, Eltham Foodshare, the Salvation Army and World Vision. Letter drops for St. Vincent de ........... Poul Society hove been undertaken. Food clothes and blankets hove been generously donated for those people in our community who struggle to hove the basic necessities of life.

One of the highlights of the Social Justice Group's calendar in 1994 was the running of "Social ·Justice Week". A wide range of speakers and activtties stimulated interest in issues affecting a brood spectrum of people in the local and world community. The focus for "Social Justice Week" this year was the theme ·Appreciating Differences· and again the school community had the opportunity to deepen our commitment to promoting a more just society.

The activities and interests of the Social Justice Group compliment the many other ways in which the school community attempts to become better informed about and more actively involved in promoting human rights for all people. _ _...

The two days have made us aware of the irreversible damage we are doing to our earth and it has made us alert to the significance of our jobs as environment group members.

Overall we felt the two days were a great learning experience as we got to discuss with other students what our environment group was doing and what else we are going to do.

A WEEK OF CELEBRATION Fifty years since the war fmished. That seems like a fair enough reason to celebrate - and C. L.C. did with the rest of Australia because it had been fifty years since Australia experienced victory in the Pacific.

Celebrations took place at C.L.C. for the whole week with parades and most subjects focussing on the war.

My year seven class (room 4) was lucky enough to be picked to go to the ticket tape parade and were so excited that we were going to watch what would become history.

During the day, we found out some interesting war stories from men who fought in the war and we shook a lot of hands and gave a lot of "high fives" to the crowd.

Ticket tape was thrown and people danced and cried because the war had been over for fifty years. Hopefully another fifty years will pass so other people can experience what Year Seven, Room Four 1995 has experienced.

On Wednesday August 2nd, Emma Gilmartin, my great uncle (a World War II Veteran) and I travelled to the World Congress Centre in Melbourne for a State luncheon, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II. Upon arrival, I found myself surrounded by hundreds of old gentlemen and year 11 and 12 students from all over Victoria We were addressed by the Premier and then by a Veteran who told us stories of the war. It wasn't until the Captain of P.L.C. stood up to speak, that I realised just how fortunate the youth of Australia are.

We were delighted to of the hear distinguished achievements in their medical studies at Melbourne studies at Melbourne University of two of our ex-students Giuliana Antolovich who left CLC in 1981 and completed a doctorate in Physiology before beginning her medical studies, was the top student in final year Medicine.

Joanne Said who completed VCE in 1988 was awarded the final year prizes in Obstetrics and Psychiatry.

Congratulations to the 1994 VCE students on the very pleasing results they achieved.

Congratulations must also go to their VCE teachers, their parents, and to the entire school staff who have contributed over the last six years to their development and success.

All 102 students successfully completed their VCE. It is interesting to note that: 6 students achieved TER's (Tertiary

Entrance Ranks) between 97 and 98. 75, ie. within the top 3% of students in the State.

13 students achieved TERs above 90, ie, within the top 10%.

31 students achieved TERs above 80, ie, within the top 20%.

67 students (2/3 of the VCE class) achieved TERs above 50, ie, within the top 50%.

At the end of March, an analysis of the destinations of our students reveal that: 91 % of our students were offered a place at either University or TAFE. of these, 72.5 % were offered a university course and 18.5% were offered a T AFE course.

2.5% were studying at private colleges .

5% were working fulltime and 1.5% were working part-time.

PREMIERS AW ARD. Jodie Ryan (Year 12 1994) received a Premier's A ward as one of the top five students in the state in VCE Economics.

LEADERSHIP INDUCTION. Every student has the potential to develop good leadership skills and Catholic Ladies College provides students with opportunities to do this.

The daily functioning the development of our school community relies in the generosity and the skills of the students who have

particular leadership roles to fulfil.

At our assembly last Friday, we held an induction ceremony for some of our school leaden.

As part of this ceremony we prayed for the ability to model our leadership skills of those showed in Jesus.

S.C.S.A SWIMMING SPORTS. The combined Catholic Schools' Swimming Sports were held at the State Swimming Centre at Batman Avenue on Monday, March 20. Our swimmers performed creditably and there were movable performances by Sioban Robinson, Jennifer Maher and Lizzie Gardner.

Diving results were pleasing with Lizzie Gardner, Marnie Norfolk and Siobhan Robinson, Lizzie Gardner, Marnie Norfolk and Siobhan Robinson all gaining 2nd place, Fiona O'Neil 4th place and Kate Cooper 5th place.

CONGRATULATIONS. Kathleen Spaun, Year 8 recently competed in the Victorian State Judo Titles. She won gold in the Under 13 Division, then competed in the Under 16 where she won a silver medal which earnt her the right to represent Victoria at the National Titles in June .

UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE'S UNILIFE PROGRAM. Congratulations to Kylie Blair who was offered one of 200 places at the University of Melbourne's Unilife Program.

Kylie attended the university from Wednesday, April 19 until Friday, April 21. She was a resident in one of the university colleges part in a wide range of issues including career options, employment opportunities and study skills. Kylie had all the facilities of the university available for her use including the Sports Centre and the Baillieu Library.

Congratulations to her and we hope her university experience was beneficial and enjoyable.

CURRICULUM COMMITTEE. A significant and valuable contribution has been made by Kelly Haines, Mary Futol, Claire Enright and Larissa Robinson as members of the Curriculum Committee who have been working diligently for the well being of the student body.

Last November, I began my student exchange in Germany and, for ten weeks, stayed in Wurzburg with my exchange sister, Kathrin Weber.

She lives with her parents and has no brothers or sisters.

This exchange was one of the most exciting times of my life and an experience I'll never forget . I meet some great people of whom I hope, I will keep in contact with forever.

Kathrin and I got along like sisters. It was such. a contrast living with a girl my own age m another country. There was so much to learn and it really helped my German.

Kathrin lives in a small village called Eisingen and every day we would catch the bus to school in Wurzburg. School was from Sam to lpm, then we usually went shopping, skiing or visited Kathrin's friends at home where we'd drink hot tea and play games. In early January, the fifty Australian exchange students from around Victoria spent a week in Berlin. Berlin was about 800km north of Wurzburg.

It was the equivalent of trip to Central Australia when she was in Australia.

Over the Christmas holidays, I took part in a ten week exchange to Germany. I stayed in a town called Wurzburg in Bavaria. I really enjoyed my stay there, especially because my host family were so friendly. My host sister, Mira, was in Year 11 so I went to school with her each day.

For their two week Christmas holiday we went to the Bavarian Alps where it had been snowing.

I had a fantastic time in Germany and look forward to going back. I recommend the exchange to anyone as it is not only a learning experience but a chance to meet new people.

THE SCHOOL PRODUCTION GREASE - is the word .... . and it really was all over school especially in August.

The school production for 1995 was that fantastic 50's and 60's musical 'Grease'.

Girls participated in this years production in many different ways acting, singing, dancing, playing instruments, designing and building sets, working backstage, lighting, assisting with sound and catering.

The production involved about 150 students from different year levels and brought them together as one team with one goal creating a successful school production.

Putting Grease together was a lot of fun and hard work but I'm sure all involved would say it was well worth it.

Over 1600 people saw Grease including some students from our local primary schools.

Apart from showing off our Y...e.I.l'.talented students at C.L.C. and the strength of the Creative Arts skills, it created friendships and memories of a real team work experience that I'm sure all of the girls will remember.

Congratulations to every student involved - the show was a credit to you all.

FOOD TECHNOLOGY Another year has passed in which the Catering team has been busy planning and cooking for various school functions throughout the year.

The first major catering function for 1995 was the C.L.C .. fete . Once again, the girls served up dozens of freshly baked sconescomplemented by lashings of jam and cream and a good ol' cuppa Whilst the catering team tempted guests at the C.L.C . open day with the smell of oven -fresh biscuits and other deliqcies, the year 12 Technology Design and Development students treated visitors to afternoon tea .

The school production - "Grease" saw the theme of the fifties carried from the stage into a novel interval with refreshments of hot dogs, Coke, and Iced donuts served by the Catering Team.

Dressed in bobby socks, tee-shirts and full skirts, the team would have been at home at Rydell High as they served several hundred patrons over the three nights of the Play.

Under the guidance and direction of Mrs Loretta Falvo, the team provided a supper of savouries and h_ors d 'oeuvres at the Creative Arts Festival in October.

Each of these functions has provided participants with an opportunity to experience, first hand, practical applications of the

skills and theory learnt in ·class, as well as develop confidence in interpersonal interactions.

From simple beginnings - of a couple of ovens and a sink in the Undercroft, in 1986 Food Technology has developed at C.L.C. as a very popular subject - originally available in years 9 to 11, with year 12 introduced in 1992. C.L.C. will see a further development in 1996 when the subject becomes available for the first time at year 8.

Many students have taken their Food technology studies to tertiary level in the areas of hospitality and food sciences and now work in related businesses.

I would like to thank all the members of the Catering Team for their contributions this year, Loretta Falvo for her consistent support and professional contributions, and all those members of the C.L.C. community who have assisted Food technology duringl995 .

SET DESIGN A brief mention must be made of the skills students developed in set design . for "Grease" . Three ye ar 12 students grasped the challenges of technical drawing and illustration to use the designing of scenes from the production for their graphics folio .

On Wednesday the 26th of July Catholic Ladle•' College hosted a Schools Constitutional Convention sponsored by the Centenary Consfftut/onal Fol.lldatfon.

Participants were year 11 students from Catholic Ladies College and nine neighbouring schools.

The students heard Mr. Michael Tehan, a barrister speak on the topic "How should Judges be Chosen", Dr John Hirst, Senior lecturer in . History at La Trobe University address the issues of selection of the Head of State under both a monarchy or a republic, and Ms Morag Fraser, Editor of Eureka Street Magazine questioning "Should the Constitution require the equal representation of men and women in Parliament?".

After each speaker , students had the opportunity to debate the questions raised in the discussion groups.

The input in each case was informative, succinct and challenging, and stimulated lively discussion This day was a wonderful opportunity for students to become better informed about important constitutional issues and to exchange ideas with their c q,unterparts from other

A STUDENT'S PERSPECTIVE The Constitutional Convention was a chance for year eleven students from both C.L.C. and neighbouring schools to get together to discuss our own thoughts and ideas on topics that we do not usually have a vioce on in our daily lives.

We also had the opportunity to mix informally over the lunch provided by the T AFE students from C.L.C .

Visiting speakers and teachers were also treated to a fine lunch organised and prepared by the Tafe course students from C.L.C. The Convent ion was a beneficial day for all who attended.

YEAR 11 WORK EXPERIENCE I was lucky to spend my two weeks of work experience at two most competitive music magazines, IN*Press and Beat.

I was able to obtain an Interesting Insight as to how the magazines run and was also able to compare and distinguish better ways In which to go about doing things for my own 'Youth Music Newsletter, INFLOW'. IN*Press magazine prompted me to ask questions and welcomed any queries that I had, whereas Beat left me by myself and chose not to help.

At IN*Press I gained important knowledge about the layout and the amount of detail that Is required for each page, I was also able to sell advertisement places to the public. answer phones. and I wrote some pieces which were later printed . I gained all of my knowledge at IN*Press, and found it a highly beneficial experience that stabilised my feelings about going Into the field of Journalism.

Beat, however, were not so welcoming at first, proving that silence and a little Ignorance to my Inexperience was a virtue. and a great amount of the time I spent there was by myself with no assistance.

However, by the end of the week they had grown accustomed to my silence and made me feel more welcome . This did not stop them from copying my written piece on a musical Instrument and printing my editorial In 'Mix Down' under another man's name. This person, whilst I was there, informed me that he has no journalism skills and copies other magazines.

Overall, I believe my work experience was highly benenc/al to my Idea of my future occupation and I am now sattsned that I would like to work In ,/ol.lnallsm.

Ever since grade six, when I made up stories about KGB agents kidnapping members of the English royal family, I've known that I want to make writing my life. When work experience took place in the last two weeks of term one, I, along with the rest of year eleven, were given the chance to sample thei r dreams first hand.

For the entire week I spent my time tripping around Melbourne with different journalists, attending press conferences and following up stories. , The highlight of my week with A.A.P, ~on the Friday, when

along with a great number of repre1entatlve1 from Melbourne's media. I attended the opening of the new Ford plant In Altona, On this day I had the chance to hear speeches from Mr Keating and Mr Kennett.

When the formalities were over.A chance encounter saw me making social chit-chat with Premier Jeff Kennett.

For the second week I gained a whole new perspective on journalism, from working at the office of Eureka St. Magazine (also the base of Jesuit Publications).

This week tended to drag somewhat after my first week of activity.

The only day that I did anything other than basic office duties was on the Wednesday when I attended a movie preview and had the opportunity to speak on the radio.

On the whole , my two weeks of work experience were probably two of the most exciting weeks of my life. I am now looking forward to finishing school and starting a career In journalism. The work experience program Is very beneficial for all students.

A/though not everybody may nnd the occupation of their dreams, It's a chance to get a taste of life outside the dassroom.

SHINES ALONE

A child so frightened, a life undecided feeling like one is the only.

The sadness and hurt I feel when my eyes stare into the body of the curled up foetus on the ground.

A child, a young child, this little star shines alone and she wishes for acceptance and freedom - to hide the pain she turns inward to seek relief, relief only given by her mind which soothes her pain and substitutes it with kisses that sweetly press against each cheek.

She prays each night that when her eyes awake the next day, she will see soft pastel colours that engulf her and blanket her with love.

I give my life for her because I know that someday when I am scared and there is no blanket with which covers me, I will curl myself Into a foetal ball and wish I was home.

When she lifts herself and her salty tears fall from her coffee eyes, she will tear apart her hands to search for her mother and snuggle deep inside her warmth. But mummy is not there, so she clutches her soul and cries herself to death for the hope of freedom.

YEAR 10 -A YEAR OF ..... ?

From the "Middlers -verging -on - young - ladies" year nines to the "This is the Preparation for your V.C.E . which is next year" threat, we began as year l Os. It's been a hell of a year, though of course it's had its ups and downs, but I think we've all enjoyed it.

The social was the dressiest night of the year, held on the Monday night in October at C.L.C. Boys from Parade and Marcellin attended(Not a 'Friar in sight ...... .I wonder why? ) and with an excellent DJ . and great music we danced (some romanced -both old and new flames!) the night away.

We've all been on various excursions throughout the year, most have been memorable - The 'Tread the Boards" excursion to Beauty and the Beast" being a good example.

However the R.E. "Agape"at the Tennis centre although 11ot memorable was enjoyed because of the time off school.

Subject selection and Work Experience preparation hit us all like a punch in the stomach.

Cries of "I don't know what I want to do!" echoed down the hall for weeks. But at last, everyone decided whether to do Legal Studies or Psychology, and where to go for work experience, ·and how to get there .

Last but not least, I'd Like to thank Mr Nillson, who checked our blazers every night, set up hot dog days especially for year 10 and made year l 0 a memorable experience for all of us.

When the dreaded Monday night arrived, we were all trying to hold back our excitement. As we walked in the door, we feasted our eyes on the many guys from Marcellin, Parade and St. Kevin's .

Tessa Sibbel It took a while to gee kicking and for people to start mingling with the opposite sex (yes! the opposite sex!!)

Many found the loves of their lives while others danced away to the groovy tunes supplied by DJ IVO .

SPORTS DAY

All in all, it turned out to be quite a success, the year 10 band got a little bit of exposure (much to the pleasure of the head bangers!) and most of us enjoyed the night out.

V. Serafin

A good way to judge how good the interschool sports were is to judge how hoarse your throat is.

Mine was pretty hoarse this year. The day took place at Olympic Park, and was off well for C. L.C. with year ten student Samantha Carroll easily storming away to break the record for the 1500 metre run..

With this victory the cheer squad warmed up and the atmosphere was fantastic.

Mighty C.L.C. represented themselves well, coming second in the juniors, third in the intermediate and equal first in the seniors, and with an overall placement of second . Our athletes should be proud of themselves, as should the unbeatable cheer squad

Right now, everyone is loaded up with hours of work with only five weeks left.

Let's hope everyone survives this last hurdle .

YEAR 10 SOCIAL

Lastly I would like to thank all the rom"eroom teachers who put up with our cries of " I hate year IO" and "I've got sooh much work!" and laughed with us over footy tipping.

"It's Gonna Be crap'" were the words on everyone's lips about the year 10 social, only weeks before the big night.

"I've got nothing to wear!" were the next words said, only days beforehand.

When we first became Peer Support Leaders in year 10 we never thought that it would involve two days of training (if you call eating chocolate, talking with friends and playing games training!)

After choosing groups from a long list of year sevens, we started to get a bit worried about what they were going to be like. This is the nineties, kids these days aren't exactly sugar and spice!!, but the first lesson was quite suprising . For around the first forty minutes they sat there, like vegies, staring at us, (I suppose at least it was some sort of communication!). In the last ten minutes they started to come out of their shells, and were introducing themselves After this lesson, the other lessons just got better and the fifteen week program flew by. Overall we enjoyed Peer Support and helping the year sevens to fit in .

We strongly recommend to all the year nines to become a Peer Support Leaders . help out the year sevens, and to get classes off!

It's a great chance to

COMMUNITY SERVICE. Every year ten student takes part in a Community service program as part of their Religious Education.

Students are given the choice of whether they would like to spend time with mothers and babies, at kindergartens or with the elderly. Many students form special friendships with the people they meet and will remember the encouragement given to them by Sr. Margaret Nabbs.

Unfortunately this year we are farewelling Sister Margaret Nabbs who has organised this act1v1ty for the student with great sensitivity. Sister Margaret is retiring. On the 6th of August this year Sr. Margaret (an ex-St. Columbus student) joined Sr. Dierdre Hickey (an ex-C.L.C .. student) Sr. Marina Ward, Maureen Porteous, and Grace Mc Donald to celebrate 40 years as a Sister of Charity. On the 2nd of February 1953 these ladies and seven others (Totalling 12 in all) entered the Sisters of Charity Novitiate at Wahroonga, N .S.W . The years between have taken many directions. The Celebrations were enjoyed hy the five as they shared experiences and remembered people and places that had affected their lives between 1953 and 1995.

- - - - - - - Y E A R NINE YEAR NINE CAMP Everyone had mixed feelings about this years outdoor- ed camp. This was mainly because we were scared out of our minds by the older year levels, who were telling us, "Don't go, it's really horrible!" and "Good luck, you're gonna need it!!" So, after hearing that, we weren't exactly excited.

The day of departure arrived, and we set off into the wilderness. On arrival we played initiative games and packed our bags for our two nights in the bush.

YEAR NINE SOCIAL

Despite what everyone said to us before the camp, I think that camp was an excellent experience and I'm glad I didn't miss it.

For the last two or three weeks of term 2, it seemed that all Year 9, talked about was the up and coming social.

To everyone else who has the choice about going to camp, don't miss it, because I'm telling you now, it's really not as bad as it sounds!!!

The most often asked question, which made us all stress was "what are you wearing?" The night took a lot of organising, collecting money, ringing up schools and finding a good DJ.

Finally it was the day of the social. We all arrived at 7:30 ready to have heaps of fun.

There were boys from Whitfriars, Marcellin and Parade.

At first, the boys kept to one side of the hall and the girls to the other, but it wasn't long before we were all in one big group having heaps of fun. The music was good, with the DJ playing a variety of songs to please everyone

I think that the highlight of the whole trip was the toilet, [a hole in the ground and a shovel named Doug] I'm absolutely certain that no one will ever forget our toilet experience s although some of us may want to!

Apart from the toilet, there were lots of other memorable experiences .

These included the petrifying rock climbing, the long bushwalks, the luxurious tents, the unforgettab le food, the raft-buildin g, the songs, hide and seek, which was played in the middle of the night, in the middle of nowhere, the friendship made, the smell of everyone after three days without showers, and finally the trip home.

That night, quite a few new relationshi ps were formed and the social was a great experience for everyone.

Thanks to Mrs Warrell and all of the class reps everything turned out perfect and the night was full of fun. We had lots of parents there to help and if it wasn't for them, the night couldn't have gone ahead.

Prize Winning Essay

by Lauren Colbert year 9, written for "Mental Health" compeffllon School had Just ended and I was walking home. I decide to take the long way home because Leah will be going the quick way. It's not like I don't love my sister. It's that I get a bit scared of her. You see. she has schizophrenia .. She Is pretty normal but at times. she gets a little weird.

I get home at 4:30 pm. I know Leah Is already home because her bag Is In the doorway. I dump my bag wherever and hang my blazer behind a chair. I see Leah sitting at the bench watching TV and eating a piece of chocolate cake. Mum Is making a cup of tea for her.

"HI". I say.

"Hello honey. How was your day?"

"Alright" "Did you get Into trouble?"

"No"

"Okay then· Mum asks me that everyday as I was nearly suspended from school a couple of months ago.

It wasn't for anything serious; I punched a glrl as she was teasing me. All my teachers and my parents thought It was because of Leah so they sent me to the counsellor. I never went.

Leah looks at me for a little moment.

"Why didn't you walk home with mer Leah says.

Mum looks up at me In a sternful sort of way. I know what she Is thinking. ·1 walked home with Tammy as she was feeling lonely; I reply without hesitation.

"Yeah right: Leah says, under her breath.

I grab a piece of cake and go to my room. I am sitting on my bed, listening to the radio and I hear Leah run to her room.

It was Thursday and every Thursday. Mum and Leah go to see Dr Harry. Leah doesn't like him.

Whenever she looks at him. she goes psycho (bad choice of words). She thinks the doctor Is In love with her and wants to kill her. That's the part I don't get - If he loved her. why would he kill her?

Mum and Leah leave the house. I can tell Leah Is frightened.

I am watching lV when Mum and Leah come home. She has been crying. Mum dumps her handbag and tries to calm Leah down. I don't get worried as this Is a common occurrence on a Thursday.

Mum tells me to get Leah her medication. When I come back . she Is staring into space . All of a sudden. she starts banging her head and looking around as If trying to find someone who is talking to her. Dr Harry told us that people like Leah sometimes hear voices. It's called auditory hallucinations.

I am frightened by Leah doing this. She has done this before. but I can never get used to it. I give Mum Leah's medication as I don't want to give It to Leah myself. Everytlme I am frightened. I go to my room and just stare at the ceiling and think about things. I hear Mum calm Leah down and the front door opens. Dad Is home. Leah's

bedroom door opens and shuts. She has @one to bed. Mum and Dad are talking quietly. ' It Is the dull drone as I know they don't want me to hear anything. It's not like I don't already know what's wrong with Leah.

Today. I get up and get ready for school like normal. At the breakfast table . my parents are talking. They stop talking when they see me. I get my bowl of 'Coco Pops'. when Leah comes In. She goes and hugs Dad with a morning kiss.

She gives Mum an evil eye and Ignores her. I can tell Mum Is hurt but hides It with a brave face. there Is a silence for a long time. so I try to break It by finally telling Mum and Dad about parentteacher Interviews. They get mad at me for not having told them sooner. I Ignore them.

Mum makes me walk to school with Leah today. I protest. but she gives me a tried and angry she has. I shut my mouth.

"So, how are your I ask Leah. She looks at me.

"Do you want to go to the mllkbar before school?"

"No"

"Okay then. Are Mum and Dad going to see any of your teachers this term?"

"Look. you don't have to talk to me. okay?"

"Sorry.· I stop talking for I don't want to get her worked up.

School Is fun today as It Is the last day for the term. I am at my third class party for the day when I am called to the office. All my friends look at me. worried. We all think It's because we wagged PE, so I am scared.

At the office. the receptionist looks at me like she has seen a ghost. ·vou called for mer I ask hesitantly. ·ves. come with me quickly."

I am thinking she Is taking me to the principals office. but she takes me to Leah's homeroom.

Relief washes over me. I know something Is wrong with Leah. but I'm glad I'm not In trouble.

"Please help her.

The other students are frightenedl"Mrs Hill tells me. I can feel everyone's eyes on me and I am terrified. I go slowt y over to Leah . She Is In the comer. holding her knees to her chin and rocking back and forth. This has happened a time before. but Mum has always taken charge. I don't know what to do.

I take Leah's arm and she yelps and pulls away from me. She Is crying. I am so scared. I start crying too. I am sitting with my legs crossed. crying Into my hands. I am thinking · my sister Is sick. She is crying and I can't help her' . I hear Leah stop crying and I feel her hand on my back.

She rubs it up and down. that has not happened to me for a couple of years since Leah was diagnosed .

Leah and I are hugging in the middle of the room when Mum rushes in. She takes Leah away and I follow. I am quiet as I am thinking about how much I do love Leah and the next time something like this happens. I will not be afraid.

YEAR 8 BREAKFAST

Well, what a fun morning, and I think I si}eak for all year 8s when I say that.

All the girls came to school dressed in their nightwear - may I add looking rather attractive. We had pigtails and ribbons, teddy bears and dressing gowns, I think even a hot water bottle was in the crowd somewhere. However, I think the slippers really took the cake, where did you get them???

The highlight of the morning was of course ... breakfast!

Those mouth watering croissants and irresistible hot cross buns ... yummy! They were obviously enjoyed by everyone since the remains were crumbs and empty juice cups.

After the feast was photo time, and what would a party be without a group photo?! Well, once this was mentioned everyone, I mean everyone, flocked together as if some guy was going to walk past (gee girls, wouldn't want to be modest!)

Unfortunately the bell went, which meant uniforms on (yuk!), yet we managed to con the teachers into letting us relax in our PJ's until recess.

The day ended with happy faces and pigtails still in, a great day for everyone.

YEAR 7 GEOGRAPH Y On Friday June 2nd, all the year 7's went on a geography the to excursion Commonweal th Educational Re search/Enviro nmental Studies, or CERES, an African environment and village awareness centre . At about 9:30am, we arrived at our destination in Brunswick .

Once inside the gates, we we re split into our four homerooms and each set off for different activities.

My group 's first activity was to learn about the jobs and daily routines of the women in Africa. We were told that mo st women in Africa had to wa lk for about one or two hours each morning to find suitable wood and water. We had it easy - we only had to walk around the corner to the wood heap.

During the activities we were taught to sing an African chant. We were told that to pas s the time quicker the women would sing, chant and talk to each other.

Next on the agenda was learning about some customs and traditions of Africa. One pa rticular thing we learnt attend was that only boys school. School for them is often just under a tree on long wooden benches and tables.

of the things we found out is that the men are allowed more than one wife, and that when they pay must they marry, the father of the bride a price. bride The last lot of activities for the day consisted of making mud bricks and building a rough African hut. With the mud bricks, half of us dug up some dirt, wheeled it over to the others in a wheelbarrow and sloshed in some water.

Then the other half of us did the dirty work. They mixed it all up and put them into moulds, tipped them out and With the left them to dry. hut, we put up a simple wooden structure and covered the roof with palm leaves.

Well the day had finally come to an end. We had all and educational an had enjoyable time at CERES, and we hope that if you ever visit it you will enjoy it as much as we did .

The next stop was a session with a well known author from New Zealand - William He talked about Taylor. himself for a while and told us that he has ideas for books in his head all the time. He then mentioned that he wrote about two books per year and got his ideas from real-life situations. For example when he became a grandparent, he wrote a book about a baby.

He allowed us to ask him questions. Many more could have been asked but we ran out of time.

TOURN AMENT OF MINDS Fourteen girls participat ed in Tourname nt of Minds and used their creativity and problem solving skills to come up with a solution in the Language /Literatur e section and the Social Sciences.

We had a wonderfu l time preparing for the tournamen t day at Monash University and both teams were very confiden t and eager to perform their long term problems.

The tourname nt experienc e provided the girls with the opportuni ty to participat e in cr-eative spontaneo us and long term problem solving, developed co-operat ive skills and an enthusias tic attitude of life -long learning.

DIAMO ND VALLE Y CLUST ER GROUP Montmo rency Seconda ry College, Catholic Ladies' College and Eltham College formed the "Diamond Valley Cluster Group" as a pilot group to challenge more able students and exchange ideas across levels.

Three one-off classes were proposed and advertised to students in the participat ing schools.

Each school could place seven students in the class (class size of 21) Different students would attend different activities.

Classes offered were Maths for years 9/10 at C.L.C. Writers Workshop using word processor s for students in years 8 and 9 at Montmore ncy Secondar y College, and Creative Arts for students in Years 9/10 at Eltham College.

Over the past two years we have had the privilege of taking part in the "Future Problem Solving" program.

Through this we have learnt various skills and steps which we have found useful in other areas of our school work.

"Future Problem Solving " consists of research, a lot of brainstor ming, finding out solutions, and getting a fair view of issues in our world today.

In August we were given a problem to solve and for two solid hours with no help we went through the six steps to solve it. Everything was to a time and a schedule and we were all so nervous.

But we accomplis hed our task and booklets were sent to Deakin University .

Our teams came first, second and third in their booklet sections.

Over all we have found F.P.S• to not only be a challenge and chance to understan d today 's world, but also a benefit to our school work.

to warm everyone up, we discovered just how cold Canberra can get, we were all frozen walking back to the bus.

It was so cold It could have been snowing (except for the fact that there was no fluffy white stuff anywhere)

YEAR 10 CANBERRA /SYDNEY TRIP "This room Is mine· .

'No Mr. Nielson. you said we could have a big room' .

'But that's not fair!'

And so the cat fight for the room began. I could tell this was going to be a tough trip.

The bus ride to Canberra took over nine hours, that Is. nine hours of ; Janet Jackson tour videos , movies we couldn ' t hear . discussion of boys, magazines, music, games, and above all an enormous consumption of food I. I awoke suddenly to a loud buzzing noise that sounded like a phone , I quickly got up to answer It, but there was no one there!. So I went back to bed.

Again the same strange noise, again I got up to answer It, again bewildered , because there was no one there. After this had happened twice , I realised this was our wake-up call , and there was no-one I felt trying to ring me . extremely stupid.

We spent time seeing the sights of Canberra , Including Parliament House . where we had a dress up game of Parliament, and some of us discovered our future careers as polltlclans , the War Memorial. the National Science Centre, and some other groovy places. On our final night In Canberra we went to the movies and saw 'Die Hard with We arrived a Vengeance' home very late and as we were soon to discover, this was our last night of luxury. The next morning we awoke to the same strange noise, this time I was smart, I Ignored It and stayed In bed!. After breakfast we packed up and continued on our way, to the second part of our adventure.

Our first wonderful experience In Sydney was walking over an outline of where a dead body had fallen, (the forensic sketch of the body's position done by police). It looked very realistic and we were all horrified!.

Breakfast was better than the dinner they served up the night before; which consisted of boiled, frozen vegetables. a piece of meat, which I swear was still alive , and some unrecognisable pieces of. God knowswhatl After our pleasant d inner, one of the most memorable events of the trip happened. We were war visiting the Vietnam memorial. and while admiring the superb craftsmanship of this marvel. a student, who shall remain nameless, walked right up to it and stepped straight into the moat. For about five seconds, silence .... .. . a silence so thick you could have cut It with a knife I. Then everyone broke out In hysterical laughter. as she climbed out of the water, totally soaked!. After supper In the Pancake Parlour,

While In Sydney we visited Centre point tower. the power House Museum, we went on the monorail. which only holds six people per carriage, but I think we managed a new record of about twenty.

Finally we arrived at the airport. we received our tickets and waited patiently. The flight home was not as bad as I thought It would be . I was packing death on the plane before It took off, I had the chuck bag out, until I reallsed It had a two for one photo processing voucher on It so that Is Incentive to not throw up, because If you do , you miss out on the photo developing offer I. Again I looked around to see a few blue faces. we arrived at the airport quite late, I was hungry, tired and out of cash but It felt good to be home. we arrived In Eltham after midnight and everyone breathed a slgh of rellef. we were sad that the trip was over, but extremely glad to be home.

Once was dancer, Dancing to the sounds of the waves, accepting roses from a wonderful audience, signing autographs for a "thankyou" crowd, taking curtsies again and again, walking out into an admiring and congratulating mob ..... but now I'm not.

Once I was an actor, performing to an ecstatic audience, their faces showing their enjoyment bowing again and again, receiving rave reviews in the papers , tears filling my eyes as the final curtain falls .. ... . but now I'm not.

Once I was a writer, scrolling out stories of truth, romance, realism and westerns, having book launches, meeting other writers who soon became my friends, being a writer-in-residence to children I remember fondly, writing my first Novel , which now lays dusty in a box somewhere .... but now I'm not.

Once I was a teacher, teaching classes of English and Science, correcting work into the early hours of morning, finding lost jumpers in paperinfested lockers, watching the kids grow up, change; going over their files when they 'd finished for the year ... .. but now I'm not.

Once I was a wife, standing in the church in my wedding dress, throwing my bouquet to my best friend, wearing something old, borrowed, and blue, cutting the two metre cake at the reception, smiling for photos ..... but now I'm not.

Once, was a mother, holding my baby close, getting up to feed her at two am , watching her sit, crawl, walk, and speak, buying her pretty dresses and shiny shoes , watching her grow ... .. but now I'm not.

I was, once, all of these things, but now I am old.

Old and forgotten, like the last novel ever wrote, my first dance I ever danced. my final curtain call of my final play, my first wedding anniversary. my last night with my daughter. before she left.

I was once all these things , but now I'm no t.

I' m now o nly o ld and forgotten. a memory off th e times behind me, all these things ... .

MARIO He was just like one of the gnarled old olive trees he used to climb when he was a boy . Steadfast and constant, he withstood all the things Ii fe threw at him Ii ke the harsh the olive endured Tramontana wind and the the of sun relentless Mezzogiorno.

He moved with an easy grace, the gentle music of his voice accompanying his eloquent almost dancing - expressive hands, like the olive sighing and sw c. ying in the fresh sea breeze .

He had always had a mass of coal luminous ever ringlets, black He since he was young. would cut them so short almost they that but a few disappeared, weeks later, never failed His to cheekily return. eyelashes were the same shade as his hair, and he smiled through them at shy a with me we when youthfulness were courting.

But his face, his polished brown walnut face, was the most exqu1s1te thing about him. The whole world lit up The when Mario smiled . moon and the stars shone out of his face when he was Liquid gold flowed happy. through his veins, making his skin glow with vivid warmth that radiated from him, and I often thought he looked as though he'd swallowed the sun .

I could see his soul in those eyes. dark luminous they when Sometimes, flickered with blue and green candle light I knew he was thinking of his children, and I could see oceans of pride that ebbed and flowed in his heart. When they flashed and blazed with ambition, I knew he was thinking about our

future in Australia, and other times, when they grew green and misty, and raindrops formed from the clouds in his eyes, his thoughts were with his mamma and pap, buried underneath that same old olive tree.

I saw the seasons of his life through those windows to his and freshness the soul, spring, of optimism exuberance and vitality of summer, and the burnished copper and crisp warmth of the autumn of his life, but I never once saw the despair He has and chill of winter. passed away, but his spirit lives in that gnarled old olive tree that he lies under.

She had to change. The glint of sharp, metallic scissors caught her eye . Grasping the scissors in one hand and her hair in the other,, she sawed away at the blanket of pain .

Putting down the scissors she studied the reflected result.

Short, spiky hair, a mask and they troubled so eyes threatened to ruin the mask Taking a at any moment. quietly she breath deep opened the door and stepped out to face yet another day.

What "You've cut your hair! did you think you were doing?! You look like a tart!

A tramp! Why? ... " But she didn't hear. She only felt the stinging slaps - the the sinister brutal kicks She didn't fight scratches. back. She didn't cry out. But then she ran.

And as she ran, so did the tears. They flooded her eyes, broke through the mask and bruised over the flowed cheeks. Blinded by the tears and emotions, she felt for the door and knocked sending a stab of pain up her arm.

They They let her in.

They sat her down. they and listened It was not the cared. first time she had come, and sadly, it would not be the last.

Each time she came they tended to her wounds, but they could never heal the emotional scars which lay deeply embedded in her soul.

They asked her to stay - but It would only she couldn 't.

She make matters worse. but she wanted to stay She loved this couldn't. this beater, this abuser, criminal - this mother.
