Young Women's Day was held on August 4, at the World Congress Centre. It was part of the XII International Association of Physi cal Education and Sport for Girls and Women Congress. Over 50 C.L.C. students from years nine to twelve attended Julie-Anne Kelly, Helene Agius, that day.

Catherine Mc lnerney and I were the sole student members of the organising committee which was formed in February 1992 .

The day was a resounding success, with the degree of active involvement by students in activities such as tai-chi, aerobics, wheelchair basketball, volleyball, and rowing a highlight.

As committee me mbers, we were fortunate enough to meet many people, in c luding Kay Cottee, Jane Kennedy, Danny Toro, Jenny D01111ett and Lori · Cameron.

Over 1400 students from across Vi c toria attended the day. All responded enthusiastically to a brilliant opening ceremony, ;vhich included a spectacular Rock Eisteddfod depicting women in many varied sports. Kay Cottee our first speaker was a true inspiration lo all, and encouraged everyone to pursue their goals- no matter how big or small. Students were then able to browse through hundreds or information displays and participate in activity workshops.

This was followed by the panel of speakers.

- Chaired by Jane Kennedy, the panel responded to various questions regarding women in sport.

Daniela di Toro a Behavioural Science student at La Trobe, and Australian wheel c hair tennis player, impress e d everyone with her sense of humour and immense courage. She encouraged students to pursue their sLudies lo their full ability. Other pan e l speakers in c luded jenny Donnett(diving) Lori Cameron (triathalon ) and Anne Quinn (sports sc ien ce ). DEBAT ING final, but again, as for the last few years, Country overcame City.

Nevertheless, our debaters gave very good accounts of themselves in every contest.

DEBATING There were several innovations in debating this year. We were transferred by the Debaters Association of Victoria to the Carey Grammar School region. This entailed not only a new set of schools but, it would seem, a higher overall standard among the competitors.

Our experiences were definitely more multi-cultural , in so far as our opponents in cluded Mt. Scopas, and King Khalid Islamic College, with the latter giving us a strongly exemplary lesson on how to turn out in numbers to support one's school.

The second new feature was our e nte ring a Yea r 8 team into the Year 9 (D grade) co mpetition. This team, coached, organised and enthused by their teacher of English, Mrs Val. Findling, did very well, winning their first debate and going on to win others, always against Year 9 teams. Angela O'M eara and Ali c ia Kege le won Best Speaker awards.

Our other three D grade teams, all from year 9, had their share of success. For D 2, Louise Scolieri and Seana Rough won Best Speaker awards.

In C Grade(year 10), our three teams broke even overall. In C2 . Mi c hell e Rees, Sarah Phan a nd Hayley Postance won Best Speaker awards: Lauren Cooper and Bonnie Miller had similar successes for their C3 tea m, a tea m which scored some interesting and exciting wins he lped by the guiding mind of Mr. Salmic.

All the students in Year 8 took part in debates as part of their English course. Judging by their reports, they can't wait to progress to the "real thing" next year.

We should be able to look forward to more participation and further success in 1994.

Debating!

Debating has taken C.L.C by storm over th e last few years, and the number of debating tea ms at our school have multiplied quite substantially.

We're out there arguing with the best of them now!

Debating is great; it develops publi c sp eakin g skills in argument struc ture that is partic ul a r ly helpful for the all important Year 12 En glish course blah ..... blah ..... bla h.

I recommend debating because it develop s confidence and ability, but besides that it looks great on your University profile!

All I can say is, get into it, you won't regre t it.

The initial nerves are worth it for the adrenalin rush, and the shining fam e of the C.L.C d eba ti ng badge.

At year 11 level, we had three teams , one up on last year. Best performed was the B3 tea m led by Justine Stewart, who set a high standard with her two Best Speaker avvards. Our two Year 12 teams having their last d e bates for C.L.C. broke even on win/ loss ratio: Josie Sinni , Larissa Telly and Li z Bibby won Best Speaker awards. Vanessa IVlcEvoy was recognised for h e r great co ntributions to debating over the yea rs by an Honour Avvard.

Overall,this was a year in the D.A.V. Schools Competition which saw greater numb ers in more C.L.C. teams than ever before.

Twenty-f ive enthusias tic Year 10 students took part in the 1993 Peer Support program. As an introduct ion to the program, the twenty-fi ve students attended a two day retreat at the Eltham Commun ity Centre. The retreat was run by the teachers of C.L.C and the students gained much knowledg e and understa nding through their teaching skills.

Sometime s I feel like I'm the only one on earth , having to go through the ups and downs of life, but it is a comfort to me to know that my own peers, Peer Support group and teachers are also on the same rollercoas ter. Through participat ion in the the Peer Support program and actually being a Peer Support leader, I have learnt this and I hope many others have, and , will too.

We worked in groups and took part in activities which encourag ed us to gain the trust of others.

We were given challengi ng situations where we had to make good judgemen ts and decisions .

I believe that it is importan t for everyone to have someone in whom they can trust and confide in , especiall y when a problem arises. Even if a problem doesn't arise it is still reassurin g to know that someone is there. Peer Support is a way this can be provided.

During the two days we learnt a lot about each other. It improved our communi cation skills and also our level of confiden ce. Following this program each Peer Support leader met weekly with a small group of Year 7 students. We discussed any difficultie s or problems they had with their transition into secondar y school.

It was a rewardin g program for the Year 10 students because we have built up a 5reat bond and friendshi p with the Year 7 students.

Clare Deehan Year 10

I enjoyed becomin g acquaint ed with each individua l in my group and loved hearing about all the different events in their lives in the meetings each week. Each student was unique and special and contribut ed to the group in her own way. It wasn't surprisin g that all the leaders had different experienc es and feelings about her own group, because they were all individua ls.

Peer Support is a learning experien ce for everyone involved. It is an experienc e where a sense of belongin g and together ness is establishe d.

STUDENT DAY STUDENT DAY Student day was intToduced to CLC by Mr Raj (a former CLC teacher), which involves the senior students of the school taking over the duties of th e teachers. The year 12 s found it necessary to present an interpretation of the tea c h er whose role they adopted in manner of clothing, speech and action. These interpretations were taken in good humour by the teachers, and the day pulled together to be one of th e most successful Student Days ever. The year 12 s had a ball and learnt to appreciate the difficult and time consuming duties of their teachers.

DEBATING Last night at "We're so stuck up we wear straw hats" Grammar, DAV Round 4.5 took place. We only had one team competing, (as no-one else could be bothered). However, they debated very well. It's just a pity that they were arguing the wrong topic! It was supposed to be "That the However, they V.C.E. is all in good faith". accidentally misinterpreted this topic and ended up debating "That the V.C.E. is about as funny as a **** in an elevator!" Surprisingly enough, every point made was found to be completely relevant.

To continue this amazingly interesting article about debating, I might just keep writing a little bit longer a bout absolutely nothing just to fill in a lot of room on the page and make it look as if I've actually got something really interesting to say.

Unfortunately, I don't have anything really interesting to say ... um ... did you hear the one about .the Englishman, the Irishman and the German? Well, I haven't heard it either but I'm sure that in the punch line the Irishman does something hilariously foolish.

But enough joking around. Have I filled up enough room yet? Maybe just a bit more ..... if you read this report backwards it spells out a subliminal satanic message. Well, it doesn't really. It's actually an ad for Kellog's Cornflakes; "Y'know they're golden and crunchy and only cost 20c a bowl." Okay, I think I've filled up enough room for this to pass as a debating report.

GUNDUL A COMES TO STAY In February of this year German exchange student Gundula Marorde came to stay with my family in Eltham North for a period of ten weeks.

During this time my family and I did our best to familiaris e our guest with as much of the Australian way of life as we were able.

Gundula's understand ing of the English language and her easy manner enabled her to be a welcome member of our family.

Gundula's greatest desire was to visit our beaches which we satisfied with a week at Easter in Merimbula . The weather was glorious and we were able to swim regularly .

Gundula's appreciati ve family back in Frankfurt, Germany were in regular contact with her and were extremely pleased when she returned home with a fine selection of Australian made gifts for them.

11 LEGAL STUDIES

H.MBA RWON On Tuesday, March 22nd, Year eleven Legal Studies students took part in a schools' program run by H.M Prison Barwon. The prison is a maximum security facility which detains both male and female offenders .

As the day of the visit came closer, there was some uncertain ty, on our part, as to whether we would be going a week prior to the visit as two offenders had escaped from the Melbourn e Remand Centre with the help of a female warder.

As a conseque nce there was a tightenin g of security which resulted in riots at Pentridge and Barwon. However, we did not have to worry as when the program co-ordina tor came out to the college to brief us he informed us that the media coverage of the "riots" was somewha t exaggerat ed and the program was still operating as per usual.

At the briefing, we were informed about the lay out and the format of the program. We were told that we were not going to get a tour of the prison and its facilities but that we were going to meet four to six inmates and have morning tea with them.. Our homewor k was to think of as many questions as we could ask the inmates, as the success of the day would depend upon the questions we asked. Most of us were quite excited about participa ting in the program while some of us did feel somewha t apprehen sive despite the fact that the program co-ordina tor assured us that none of the three thousand or so students, victims and private citizens who had participa ted in this program over the last three years had come under any threat or danger.

The day finally arrived and it took approxim ately two hours to get there. Barwon's buildings are modern and we were told that the cells in this prison differ to many others because they have a shower, toilet with a lid and a television set, hence the title "Barwon Hilton".

On arrival, we signed a visitors' registry book and each of us was given a wrist tag with a number on it and our hands were stamped with an illuminou s date. We then progresse d through a metal detector and through the grounds of the prison. Looking around, we could see fences dividing the different sections of the prison and noted that it was a very modern , neat and open area.

We were taken to a large room where inmates visit with their families and friends. Here we met our panel of four inmates, three observers and a police officer. The police officer spoke to us about his involvem ent in the program and then

the leader of the panel introduce d h<imself and the other prisoners . Two of the male prisoners were incarcera ted for murder, the other male was a drug trafficker and the female panel member had been convicted of drug usage and theft offences. In regard to the three observers , the female inmate was in Barwon for drug possessio n and usage offences and one male for murder and the other was an arsonist who specialis~d in burning down schools!!!!!

The floor was now open for question s and although it took a while for us to warm up, the questions soon started to flow. The inmates answered the questions readily and did not deny their involvem ent in their crimes. In fact, they all displayed a degree of remorse especially in light of the effect that their incarcera tion has had on thier families. The first question session passed quickly and soon we found ourselves having morning tea with the panel members . We were then able to speak to each prisoner on an individua l basis and this proved to be very in teres ting.

After this, we participa ted in another question session. We were intereste d to know about the crimes committe d by each inmate, life in prison, how the females and males co-exist in Barwon what the opinions of the inmates were on capitai punishm ent, whether or not a pecking order existed, the plans of the inmates once they had complete d their sentences , and the relationsh ip between the inmates and the warders.

Unfortun ately, the question time went very quickly and before we knew it it was time to go.

The answers the inmates gave to the questions that we asked enabled us to gain a good insight into prison life. Many of us were surprised that the inmates did not fit the stereotyp e of a prisoner but actually could have been a "next door neighbou r" and furtherm ore it was quite surprisin g to discover how articulate they were.

Overall, it was an invaluabl e learning activity about our criminal justice system.

Work ex~erience was great fun for me, and apart fro_m ?avrng to catch the 7:12 train every morning, l d1dn t have any problems or painful memories. l was with the Australian Associated Press (journalism ) , for one week and worked with a Barrister the next. Law was pretty good: the people were friendly, and I visited all the courts and met people from all co rners of Melbourne.

With journalism, I was always on the move, going to press co nferences, the courts to report on :ario~s trials, asking questions to people being 10terv1ewed , and seeing many other events worth reporting on. When we got back to the news room l was given a computer and had to write my own articles. I even got on the news twice! .

So for those girls who are doing work experience next ~ear and haven't found a placement yet, or are still undecided about where to go, have you ever thought about journalism ?. You don't have to be intere_s ted in that line of work, in fact if you have no idea of what you want to do, journalism for a week is ideal as you get to sec a whole variety of jobs at once when you go to report on whatever is happening. Even for those girls who just don't want to be filing or photocopyi ng for a whole week may be interested .

One would not be blamed for skipping over this rather bland in appearance paperback novel or for skimming over the plot summary only to replace it on the shelf. The plot summary describes "llear The Rain Blow" as being the true story of a remarkabl e young girl growing up in the Australian bush during the Great Depression - not exactly riveting "stuff'.

However, in this instance the old saying "Don't judge a book by its cover" is extremely appropriate . The simple plot and familiar setting of the novel combined with the witty writing style of Patsy Adam-Smit h results in a humorous, lighthearted and enjoyable novel.

"Hear the Rain Blow" tells the story of Paddy and her sister, Miss Hickie, growing up as rai lway children, their mother, a Station Mistress, and father, a Fettler. The family move from tow n to town to where their hearts arrive at the small onepub town of Waaia.

Waaia is a town that all readers are guaranteed to fall in love with. In this town everyday events such as school, c hurch working at the railway station (a popular job) and social eve nts (eg: bush dances) have an almost magical dimension to them.

Waaia is a town with an incredib le amount of co mmunity spirit which is often demonstrat ed by the lengths that the people go to, to help eac h other out.

Patsy Adam-Smi th amazingly draws the read e r into the mind of a c hild. This is shown through th e basi c language that she us es to des c rib e events and the way in which she expresse s emotions using c hild-like words such as "gosh" and "gee".

These were just a few of the traumas with which we were confronted as we anticipated the event ahead of us.

Finally th e fifth of August had arrived and what a day it was! It was rilled with exc ite ment and enormous co nfusi on . Te nsi o n was mo unting upon arrival at Lincoln Receptions but everyone was dressed to perfectio n. The traditional sea of black dresses was a thing of the past, co lour was in full bloom. As the night wore on food was served, but we were more interested in dancing the night away. Overall, we thought the night was a bla"s t (as was the next day at school).

MRS ANDREA BURTON In 1993 CLC says goodbye to a much loved Mrs Burton is teacher, Mrs Andrea Burton. leaving us to return to her home state QLD to have her first baby. Mrs Burton has been at CLC since the end of 1989 and her contribution to the performing arts has developed its prominence As well as teaching drama, within our school. she was responsible for the mammoth task of directing four of CLC's most acclaimed school productions; " Nuclear Holocaust And All That Jazz ", " The Magic Of Stage And Screen", "Fame" She and this year's success " Aspects Of Eve" is pleased at the way CLC has developed such a profile for drama.

MRS JANELLE LECINSKI Sadly, 1993 sees the end of another much loved and versatile friend and teacher, J'vlrs Janelle Lecinski.

Off to her sunny home state Queensland, Mrs Lecinski is glad to be free from Melbourne's "treacherous" weather and what she refers to as "the very different V.C.E". During her three years spent at C.L.C. Mrs Lecinski has been a dedicated, not to mention devoted Drama and English teacher, despite the often "superfluous C.A.T drafting process."

Mrs Lecinski has also directed her experience and kindness to the past two C.L.C. productions, where her generous contributions pulled together the 'business side of things'. Apart from her substantial role within the school, l'vlrs Lecinski has become a friend to many of the senior students, supporting them with encouragement, especially during the agonizing extended C.A.T period!

We thank Mrs Lecinski for her dedication and hope that she will remember us wilh the fondest of memories, as we know that \Ve will always remember her in our hearts.

TEACHER TRIBUTES MR. FLATILEY This year Mr. Flattley left C.L.C. after twelve years of running the careers program that he originally set up. During his years at C.L.C. he has done a great deal to help students make choices about their futures.

Mr. Flattley was also a supporter of Amnesty International and different environmental issues. He always made the point of promoting these issues within the school community.

At the present, Mr. Flattley is renovating his home and enjoying building. He is also doing some writing and looking fonvard to the simple life.

Mr. Flattley leaves us with fond memories of the friendships he has made with members of staff and knowing he made significant changes in the futures of many C.L.C. students.

We, as students, will always remember Mr. Flattley for the concern and helpful advice he has given us about our career choices over the past years .

Keely Scicluna Keely is leaving us next year! She will be sadly missed and fondly remembered for whizzing down the corridors with her TV's and VCR's.

Keely has been responsable for organising the Year 11 Central Australia trip each year and what a fine job she's done. We wish you goodluck for next year Keely!

MRS HEATHER CHALMERS This year we will be farewelling Mrs fleather Chalmers. She will be sadly missed by both students and staff. During her time at C.L.C. she has been involved in innovations which have made life more enjoyable for students at many different levels. It would be impossible to list everything she has done but we are all aware of the value of the Peer Support Program she introduced making it easier for Year 7 to settle in to life at secondary school with the support of Year 10 student leaders. Mrs Chalmers has also been involved in the Rainbows Program which helps students during difficult times of stress.

Mrs Chalmers has served on many committees involved in the organisation and development of school policy and teacher development. She has been most generous in the time and interest she has given and shown to all.

As Year 7 Co -Ordinator she has expressed pleasure in watching her Year 7 students develop into mature young ladies by Year 12 with purpose and direction in their lives.

MRS JANE ARUNDELL We wish Mrs Jane Arundell all the best for the birth of her second child. We thank her for all she has done particularly in the Commerce Department.

PRODUCTION- ASPECTS OF EVE THE C. LC. PRODUCTION The eerie soundtrack to "2001 A Space Odyssey" boomed from the hall's new sound system as the house lights dimmed and the audience hushed.

The stage filled with smoke, the spot-light rose and a half naked Adam emerged from the depths of the stage--- soon to be attacked by "woman" on a mission from Eve. Yes it was another C.L.C. production opening scene, bursting with energy and showing the audience what to expect for the evening. It was the final product of endless hours of rehearsals, organisations, compilation, hair-tearing, blood sweat and tears. Well, the whole thing may not have been quite that melodramatic but dedication and talenl was definitely present.

Students and teachers alike were once again able to show what they're made of. The mixture of performing, directing, backstage, technical, cooking, vvaitressing, and organising talents were abundant and were an indication of the tTue spirit of lhis school.That's what is so good about the production. It provides an outlet for everyone to have a go and try their hand at something that contributes to the one spectacular event.

Of course it would not have been possible without ....... you guessed it, Burton Enterprises ( soon to be expanded! ), who never cease to amaze and impress. Also this year a handful of Year 12s were given the acute honour of helping brainstorm We also had the for "Aspec ts of Eve" . opportunity of experiencing the trials and It was a learning tribulations of dire c ting. experien ce.

And when it comes down to it, learning is what it is all aboul. I know personally that the last four ye ars of involvement in the annual school production has taught me things that I'll carry with me forever. I hope everyone involved in the production in the future will also leave, as I am, \Vith the knowledge that they have contributed to so mething very spec ial.

I look forward to coming back and seeing the tradition continue in years to come and hope that many more students can gain from this irreplaceable experience, as I have.

HOME ECONOMICS 1993 has been an exceptionally busy year for the Home Economics Department.

Early in March we had the school Art show which opened with a Champagne supper prepared, cooked and served by students from all Home Economics classes.

Up bright and early the next morning for the school fete, students were again rushed off their feet whipping up scones at a great pace in order to keep up with the demand for Devonshire teas.

Another large function our students catered for was the lnterschool Athletics Sports hosted by Catholic Ladies' College. Supper was prepared and provided to all officials from participating schools.

Three weeks later followed the Catholic Ladies' College Open Day where a delicious afternoon tea for -all guests visiting the school was made possible by the Home Economics students .

Our Theatre Restaurant was held in May and students from all levels worked tirelessly together for many days to provide a beautiful and tasty three course meal to th e 600 people fortunate enough to attend . The Dramatic Arts and Culinary Arts combined to provide three most enjoyable and successful nights of entertainment.

The Visual and Performing /\ns Festival was held at the end of Octqber and students again this year, provided a delicious supper for all guests.

Throughout the year students from l!ome Economics classes in years 9, 10, 11 and 12 have efficiently catered for in excess of 1400 people a sterling effort!

Without these very c apable students, the culinary delights made avai lable at these sc hool functions would not have been possible.

PERFORMANCE POETRY TROUPE PERFORMANCE POETRY TROUPE

It was born when we were encouraged to audition by reciting a poem that we had memorised to a new teacher called Miss Wall (now Mrs. Burton). A brave group of about twenty Year 7 and 8s arrived in room 31. I don't know what possessed me to go that lunchtime but I had always enjoyed a good story or poem, and the promise of performing was in my mind too.

We took it in turns to recite our scratchy verses with Miss Wall ordering us to speak up and be expressive without much success. Everyone was accepted and we were dubbed the "Verse Speaking Choir" - the only one in Victoria.

We became a unique part of the C.L.C performing arts and were soon more than a verse speaking choir as we incorporated movement into our poetry. We therefore changed our name to "The Performance Poetry Troupe".

When we stepped up onto the stage for our very first performance to the C.L.C -a-udience, none of the students or teachers knew what to expect.

They were all very surprised because they had never seen or heard anything like us before.

Over the years we have performed in a variety of locations and for numerous celebrations . These assemblies, school included have drama / performing arts conferences, year level concerts, festivals and school productions. Our most recent performance was in the Botanical Gardens for "In Celebration".

My four years in the Performance Poetry Troupe have enabled me to learn public speaking skills, how to make literature more interesting through expression and emphasis, and most importantly how to appreciate poetry.

IN-CELEBRATION On the 26th of September this year, C.L.C took part in an In-Celebration for the first time. The day was held in the Botanical Gardens during the holidays and it celebrated both, the opening of the conference about Youth in the Performing Arts and, The Year of the Indigenous People.

C.L.C was represented by our Performance Poetry Troupe and Movement group who combined to create an extremely effective piece about Aboriginal people and women in our society.

Schools from all over Victoria took part in the celebration, ranging from primary level through to tertiary students. Each school put in many hours of preparation into their piece and we all felt it was a worthwhile experience.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

COMMUNITY SERVICE REFLECTION Every student in year 10 took part in Community Service as part of their Religious Education course. Students were given the choice of whether they would like to spend time with mothers and babies, at a kindergarten or with the elderly.

Community Service went for a period of ten weeks and students gave up their lunch times and time after school on Thursdays. During that time many students looked forward to the days they had Community Service. Many students formed special friendships with the people they met.

Students who helped mothers with babies provided time for the mothers to spend on themselves. Students folded clothes, cleaned up or played with the children. There were a few sets of twins and a beautiful girl with cerebral palsy. Another student and I looked after a wonderful little boy who was blind and had severe brain damage. His mother was a Foster Mother who showed such love and tenderness towards Vasil that it would touch a lot of hearts.

Students who went to kindergartens generally played with pre-schoolers, painted, made hats and masks and were generally kept on their feet by the youngsters.

Students who visited the elderly at Judge Book Village , Eltham Lodge, and Para Lodge, were great company for the elderly, who enjoyed their visits each week. Students played Bingo, painted nails, and served afternoon tea. Many students had great conversations and dis c ussed many topics.

Students were also able to hear about the beautiful past of these people. These students found that going to see the elderly was really interesting and enjoyed going eac h week.

Overall, from the positive attitudes towards Community Service I have found that many students learnt a great d ea l from this experience.

Many students have become attached to the people they helped and still kee p in contact.

On behalf of all the students l would like to thank Sister Margaret and the teachers and parents who gave their time to take students to and from their destinations. I feel that every student in Year 10 will never forget the expe ri e nce and that the majority of students found the experience worthwhile.

U ND ERSTANDING NEW PEOPLE IT TAKES

YouR SENSITIVITY ENTHUSIASM RESPECT AND VIRTUE. IT'S GREAT COMMUNITY ENJOYMENT For my 10 week community service program, I went to judgebook Retirement village, with 5 other girls. Although it was difficult at times we all found it a worthwhile experience.

At first we found it a bit hard to talk to the residents and we felt uncomforta ble around them. As the weeks went by though, we found it easier. They started to recognize us and th ey often told us how mu ch they looked forward to our time with them.

We usually played Bingo which everyone enjoyed or we would sic and talk, telling th e m about things in our lives a nd listening to wh a t they had to say. l learned a lot about elderly people and a lso about the girls I went to judgebook with. From our time there we have beco me more patient parti cularly around older peopl e and are more capable around th e m too. I hav e found my co mmunity service time e njoya ble.

In June this year 40 Year 10 students and 4 teac hers set off on the annual Canberra trip. After the traditional lunch at the Tuckerbox we headed to the capital and arrived in time to enjoy our roast chi cke n dinner, at our LUXURIOUS motel!

Parliament House was a highlight as we studied the workings of our political system. The mock parliament was animated and the cries of 'Shame, Shame' and 'Here, Here' echoed around the one billion dollar political palace.

The n ew Vietnam Memorial was superb. Such a simple but effective design was enhanced as we made a special late night trip. The War Memorial provided a great opportunity to think about Australian history.

The evening tour of Canberra was spectacular. All students e njoyed the glittering lights and the view of the old Parliament from the top of Mt Ainslie.

The staff were most impressed with the demeanour of the stud e nts. It was a succ essful trip that provided unbeatable value for money.

Our coach drive r took us on an interesting tour of th e e mbassi es. The Chinese embassy was diffi c ult Mr. Lan ce Nilsson. to d esc rib e, howev e r, the buildings alone would -~~~--'llT"....,".':°"-.,.~~-------....-......, co nta in ab o ut 3 00 different rooms. YEAR 9 YEAR NINE CAMP On Tu esday morning when we left for camp I was n't loo king forward to sleeping out, cooking me als , walking with heavy packs on and not having toilets! To be honest I thought this was go ing to be the worst camp ever but I was wrong.

I had a fantastic time. One night we slept under the stars. We abseiled forward s down the rocks a nd stood in the canoes and played see-saw. I loved nearly every minute of the camp and I'm so glad we we nt.

Eve ryo ne had heaps of fun on camp and we all ha d a n o ppo rtunity to try lots of differen t th in gs . We went for four days with two day s slee ping out in the bush. This included cooking a ll o ur own food, digging our own toilet and ca rry in g eve ryth ing we needed for the three d ays in a big back pack. On the days we had the o pp o rtunity to do things like abseilin g, ro c kc limbing , canoein g, rafting and bushwal king.

Ca mp ta ught me lots of new stuff that I may not have o th e rwise had a c han ce to do and it was hea ps o f fun.

OCEAN POLLU TION 1 would like to make a c omplain t about our polluted seas. L:i.tely, I have been doing some research on all the chemica ls that are killing our sea life. There are many differen t chemica ls in which no sea creature s can survive. An example is oil that results in birds being unable to ny and get away from their predator s.

I am greatly disturbe d about the untreate d sewage that flows into our seas each year. That is 100,000 tons of pollutio n a year from many countrie s.

On ce a sea creature is contami nated, the chemi cals are stored in the fat and cannot come out. This pollutio n that kills sea creature s has over 150 chemica ls in it. The long term effects of these che micals are the weakeni ng of bones and death.

Pollution also causes genetic disorder s.

If you care for our seas you will stop dumpin g all y our waste and help with the c leaning up and caring of our seas.

SAVE OUR SEALS I became aware of the serious danger our sea a nimals are in during a science class at school.

Po isonous chemica ls, heavy metals, sewage disposa l and industri al waste are the main problem s.

When chemica ls are in a sea animal's body it can cause mutilati on, genetic disorder s, a weakeni ng of the immune system, cancer and loss of teeth.

All o f these have a huge effect on the animal's way o f life and ultimate ly death! The chemica ls travel a long the food chain and even after they're banned take many years to fade out.

Our seals, among many other animals , are dying and nobody knows about it. Please become aware and do your bit to stop pollutio n.

YEAR NINE RETREAT The year nine retreat was nothing like what we expected . We thought we would sit around all day and talk about God. Instead the leaders made an ace day for all of us with plays, making up songs and playing electric guitars. The way we did all the activitie s made them meaning ful but fun. I had a really good day.

I really enjoyed the year nine retreat. It was a lot differen t to what I expecte d it to be. It was actually fun. There were two singers who played their guitars and they played us songs through out the day. We did some small role plays, and played games that linked to the topic of learning about God.

SCIENCE AT C.L.C SCIENCE REPORT What an eventful year it has been for our Science Department.

With the introduction of VCE Psychology, we welcomed Mrs. Ruth Pendavingh and Mrs. Val Findling to the Science Staff. Some seventy girls are taking Psychology at Years 11 and 12, and from all accounts, have responded well to the challenges presented to them.

We welcomed back Mrs. Judith Ratican from twelve months study leave.

Her interest in and enthusiasm for the preservation of our school environment has resulted in some progress being made in rehabilitating the natural vegetation along the Diamond Creek in the vicinity of our VCE Biology Study Site.

would ever make it to the book stores, but proof now sits on the shelves in the school library.

The introduction of our new Science units at Years 9 and 10 has been met with much approval. Mr. Pearce has even managed to make Physics fun.

His classes have been rocking along to the latest songs, all in the name of Physics .

Each of us in the Science Department is enthusiastic about and committed to our ongoing improvements to the curriculum. We thank Mrs. Wilson for her contribution to the work that is done in the classroom and beyond.

It is our hope that each girl, through her experiences of Science at C.L.C, sees Science as an important part of her education.

It's been a year of surprises too.

Firstly, we were thrilled to learn of the engagement of Miss Tina Guardiani to Mark Bosio.

The birth of Joseph Regan to Mrs Leanne Regan and of Matthew Gersh to Mrs Jenny Gersh in September, saw our extended Science family increase.

With the departure of our new mums, we welcomed Mrs. Emma Reynoldson to the staff.

Some of our Year 7s and 8s have been involved in extra curricular Science, participating in the Spectra Awards.

These awards enable students to perform activities at home, from topics of their own choice.

Each task accrues points towards a certificate or badge. Some of the more popular topics have been 'Chemistry in the Home' and 'Zoology.'

During August, the Swinburne Travelling Science Show visited our school. All students in Years 7-10 were able to see one of the two shows that were performed. The shows gave students a chance to see some of the more spectacular demonstrations in Science.

The Science Department offered students a chance to try their hand at bark painting during the Year of Indigenous People Celebrations.

Mrs. Willis provided the recipes and formulae for making and mixing ochres, which made for some wonderful bark paintings.

October saw the launching of Miss Gooden's and Mrs. Enright's VCE Biology book, "Success in Biology." Some of us were wondering whether it

SCIE NCE AT C.L. C. MELBOURNE ZOO CAREERS DAY FORT THE DAY GRAVITY STOPPED! GIRLS In August we were among the fortunat e group who were selected to particip ate in a program about careers for women in the zoo. We first heard a speech from Lorraine Elliot who is the Liberal member for Mooralb ark. She gave a very inspirin g speech to all the girls from various schools present. We were then welcom ed and introdu ced to the zoologic al board and told about various position s related to animals . We had many tours around the zoo, which showed the manual and hardwo rking side to these occupati ons.

This day helped us by showing us that there are many careers that women can apply and excel in a basically male orientat ed field.

ALCOA In Mid May, The year 11 Chemis try student s made the trip to Geelong to visit Alcoa. This excursio n was part of our Unit 1 Materia ls study. The day began with a brief outline of the Point Henry Works. We split into groups and gathere d up our hard hats, goggles and safctv vests, before entering the first factory with th~ electro magnet ic field. This field ran undergr ound to the pot line and allowed heavy magneti c objects to be held in the air with very little assistan ce. Alumini um was produce d here.

The molten alumini um was transpor ted in huge crucible s to the second factory where it was made into ignots. Molten alumini um is silver, not red hot. We then walked around the rest of the plant viewing the science laborato ries, amode recyclin g centTe, and the final factorv where the alumini um was rolled into sheets.

Overall the day was very successf ul. We learned a lot about aluminiu m.

Suza nn e Hevey Early on the morning of 7th April f\ooms 6 and 7 we re invaded by a group of girls in bunn y slippers and dressing gowns, while thousand s of teddy bea rs , old and new, were lined up against the wind ow. Whil e we waite d for the food to arrive we all dis c uss ed o u r ever so fashionabl e outfits and vvh e re and when we had got our teddies. Then the stampede bega n! Our food had arrived, (we had croissants, hot cross buns and hot chocolate), and our poor teddies were abandoned. There were a numb er of c uri o us o nlooke rs by this time , who were o bviousl y very , puzzled by all these strange g irls hu gg ing ted d ies and numerous mugs littering th e ground. But we didn't care, we were too full!

YEAR 7 YEAR SEVEN CONC ERT REVIEW On Frid~y the 10th Septem ber, the annua l Cathol ic Ladies ' Colleg e Year 7 conce rt was held in the school hall. A lot parent s, grandp arents , auntie s and uncles came. The night was very enjoya ble.

The concer t was opene d by Miss Ryan. She made a welcom ing speech and then the co ncert began. The first item was the school c h oir. They sang l:\vo songs which were "Mr. Sandm an" and "Tears in Heave n".

They were both well sung. The Perfor mance Poetry Troup e also perfor med a numb er of things .

I espe cially e njo yed the clappi ng poem.

Eac h Year 7 class played a song on the record er.

Room 2 played "Amaz ing Grace" . We played very well and no one squeak ed or mucke d up. Rooms 1 and 3 also played one song but Room 4 played a few.

At the end all the Year 7s join ed to make a big c hoir to sing two songs, "Lean on Me" and "Sister ".

They both sound ed really good thanks to Miss I-lopping and Mrs. Von Moller .

Lots of studen ts did solo items. The two I really enjoye d were the piano and double bass solos.

Room 4 sang a song in Germa n which was really good.

I think that the majori ty of the audien ce enjoye d the perfor mance but I did see a few people catc hing forty winks!! As my parent s could not make it to the co n cert my grand father took me.

He really enjoye d il bul my brothe r (who also went) though t it was too long. I think that was the only bad thing about the whole concer t.

The funny thing I did on the night was sing a medle y with eight other girls from Room 2 that we made up one day. It was a medley of about twenty nine differe nt songs and the studen ts who sang it were: Carly White, Kather ine Bell, Lisa Howar d, Alicia Flemin g, Louise Anton ello, Melin da Schmi dt, Sarah Willia mson, Jennie Taylor and myself . We did a really good job and the audien ce loved it.

I think that for the Year 8 conce rt it should be a lot shorte r with not as many items from other year levels.

I would like to thank Miss I-lopping and Mrs. Von Moller for makin g the concer t such a succes s.

SCHOOL ACTIVITIES YEAR 12 GEOG RAP HY The Year 12 Geography course centred on two main themes,"Use and Management of Resources" and "People, Power and Place". It involved a study of global issues that are often difficult to resolve.

While studying these units we were required tc. go on two field trips. Our first field trip was to Toolangi State Forest. Here we studied the use of t h is forest and how it is managed, we were accompanied by the Year 12 Geography students fro m Parade College. This was a most valuable investigation as it helped prepare us for the first CAT. Our second field investigation involved a study o f the waste management practices in the Eltham Sh ire. This was a cold wintery July day where we jo ined Year 12 Geography students from six other local schools. Our task was to visit a range of tip sites, a recycling depot and Transfer Station. The material collec ted contributed to our second cxtf' ded CAT.

The Buckyballs Recently scientists have discovered a third form of Carbon, and it's been called Buckyballs.

The shape of this Carbon molecule is a very similar shape to the familiar soccer ball, fashioned from five and six sided pieces stitched together.

Year 9 students. made a successful attempt to construct the shape of this amazing molecule in their science class.

T he going was tough Cleos, Cosmos, Dollys a nd the sports section of a ny newsp a per were passed around the coach, more junk food than a 7 Eleve n co uld hold was co nsumed and the video ran overtime for the first two days of trave l. As we neared the N.T bord er, more and more kn eecaps ca me out of winter hiding and razor sales soared. Coober Pedy - the opal capital of Australia - gave us the opportunity of sleeping und e rground and (hopefully) a good toilet ex perie nce.

On we trave ll ed , through the heat and dust, to a nice spot by th e side of th e road. Five star accommodation was po nd ered as the tents were put up and th e toil et h o le dug. We had spaghetti for tea that night.

Th e best was yet to co me ..... So metime the n ext day, in the distan ce, we cou ld see a flickering light - was it a Ma cDo nalds? Was it the new edition of Cleo? No, it was a transmitte r station. So on we trave ll ed.

T he Olgas definitely get a me nti o n but Trephina Go rge was good too. It could be the weather, the shopping, but what about those ca mels? The food, then again what about kitc hen duty? St. Leo's boys, hang on - anybody of the opposite sex should get a mention!

Was it the Harley rides that no one took or was it doing a load of washing? The volleyball, the swimming, the games, th e sunbaking or mayb e tent life. As I said, it's hard to say. I guess it's the only thing all of us intrepid, shorts clad travellers would agree on is that it was a great experience and one we will remember.

For those who want to go next year - start saving! For those who went this year .... Thanks!!

SPECIAL ACHIEVEMENTS

25th VICTORIAN NETBALL SCHOOL CHAMPIONSHIPS Over 850 schools entered this championship in 1993 and we congratulate the team members of the senior, intermediate and junior teams who reached the final 24 for their section. All teams competed creditably.

Congratulatio ns to Catherine Mcinerney who was selected to represent the Victorian Catholic Netball Association at the annual Australian Catholic Netball Championshi ps in Sydney from September 24 to Oc tober 3rd.

TONY FRITH Congratulatio ns to Toni Frith who was selected as a member of the Victorian Secondary Schools Sports Association girl's basketball team . The team competed in the Australian Schools' Sports Council National Basketball Championshi ps in Newcastle on August 29, to Septe mber 3.

INTER-SCHOOL BASKETBALL The junior basketball team participated in an all day tournament at Albert Park Stadium on Thursday 2nd of July. They won a well deserved third place out of the ten competing teams.

The Intermediate basketball team competed at the same tournament . They remained undefeated in the round-robin section and went on to win the tournament for their age group in a closely fought final against Our Lady of Mercy College.

FUTURE PROBLEM SOLVING Future Problem Solving is an initi a tive of the Victorian Association for Gifted and Talented Students.

The Australian-N ew Zealand Future Problem Solving program is administered from an office at Deakin University in Burwood, Melbourne and the Director of the program is Keith Frampton .

The program is a wonderful way of giving very able students the opportunity to stretch their minds in an exciting way using creative thinking experiences . We have been involved in the program for three years.

Each fuzzy problem presented requires stud e nts to use the F.P.S. process with the emphasi s o n finding a solution to the Problem. Their writin g up of the Problem is in the form of a thirteen page booklet.

The booklets are submitted fo r evaluation and are submitted from all th e Australian States and New Zealand. Train e d Evaluator assess the booklets and these are th e n returned with a very comprehensiv e evaluation sheet indicating the level of performance o n a particular problem.

AUSTRALIAN SCHOOLS' SCIENCE COMPETITION Catholic Ladies' College entered 264 students in the Australian Schools Science competition thi s year. Students from the school gained 5 2 certificates which included 4 Distinctions. 4 0 Credits and 8 Certificates of Achievement.

A total of 283,000 students in Australia, New Zealand , Papua New Guinea, Singapore, Fiji , an d Vanuatu participated in this competition.

The competition is written, produced a n d organised each year by the Educational Testin g Centre of the University of New South Wales. The Australian Schools Sc ience comp e titi o n is proudly sponsored by Esso Australia Ltd .

The aim of the competition is to provide stud e nts with a stimulating c hallenge and comprehensi ve feedba c k on their performan ce . Students are required to answer questions which cover a ran ge of Science processes and skill s .

The questionnaire s not limited to an y parti c ula r State's syllabus, but are designed to enhan ce everyday c lassroom learning by providin g students with real life problems to solve.

THE ROSE As time passes th e sepals un curl a nd th e petals are exposed . For a mome nt th e rose is beautirul - admired for the maj es ti c quality which it flaunts.

Divulged, mad e vulnerable. Like a knight with no armour; it has become ope n to adversity.

Attacked by nature - by aphids, thrips, ca te rpillars. Attacked by disease - by mild ew, black spot, rust. Attacked by man as he cuts its stem in two; dividing it, destroying it. BetTayed by each passing hour.

The rose opened up; beca me susceptible to I c urs e it for its harm. Careless flower! ignoran ce. Yet, for some reaso n I marvel at its bravery.

The rose ...... mankind. The distin c tion bet\veen the two appears far from subtle. How eve r reality ca nnot possibly be co nstru c ted upon appearances . Like the perianth, each person has something beautiful to offer; and like the thorns, each has the potential to harm. !n this respect they are comparable.

Life embodies an assortment of 'gardens' throughout which we can wander. The street so often traversed, I see as a field brimming with roses. As always, a myriad of faces pass me by.

I am startled by the realisation that I am a willing participant in a masquerade; a parade of people whose complexities are withheld, who represent the rosebud destined to remain closed, covered by the calyx, covered by a mask.

I move on, travelling further through the field until I reach a garden dense and hard, embracing those who occasionally lower their mask, ever so slightly - never completely. They sway between total closure and the outset of bloom , but never, in their entirety, are the sepals allowed to unfurl.

Cautious, vigilant, these are the survivors. For some reason I do not envy them. To me th ey appear cow ardly, and their c hangeability frustrates me . Yet 1 pres ume myse lf to be one of them.

Then, 1 discover a smaller garden. In this garden are those whom we presume to kn ow so well. It is often tragedy which acts as the instrume nt unveiling the mask and re vea lin g the tru e being. I a lways thought I was seeing a perfec t rose, an image of radial symmetry, a vision of glory. But then the mask which 1 had always presumed to be non-existent was dropped, the calyx I had always thought was already open, finally opened, and I saw the truth. Not a rose at a ll.. ..... .

CREATIVE MEMORIES I have a special box of memories in which I have gathered things over the years which have sentimental value.

There are a whole range of things in my unique shoe box, ranging from diaries that didn't get past the month of February, letters, cards, even teeth that the tooth fairy never collected, and everything in between . One thing there is lots of is photos, heaps of photos.

Like the one of my brother James and I all dressed up in Mum and Dad's clothes right down to the finishing touches of a handbag, tie and make-up .

Such photos bring a s mile as they dust off memories from the shelves in the back of my mind ........... .

Mum would usually be doing shift work at the ho spital on a Saturday, and with Dad busily working either in the toolshed or on the car, w hile listening hopefully to the hor sera ces on th e radio, the whole house was left to us ... ..... It was after lunch on thi s particular day, when Jam es and I aged five and four re spectively, sn uck into Mum and Dad 's bedroom to open up th eir huge old wooden wardrobe that made more creaks and mo a ns than elderly floorboards when walked on by elephants.

It was in the dark depths of this antique box that we scrounged around in to find the clothes that even Mum and Dad were now ashamed to wear.

The platform shoes (Dad's mind you), whi ch were a shiny cream white , had buckles on th e sides. We argued over who was going to gel the blonde wig.

I won. James got the shoes because he was older.

We had a most wonderful time. It felt great to pretend we were Mum and Dad for a change. Me in one of Mum's prettiest dresses, and a handbag swung over my shoulder.

I remember nearly twisting my ankle with every step I took in those high heeled shoes . James clomped around in his platform shoes, proudly what's more, and I found Dad's golfing hat to cover his blonde head.

W e both helped to put his tie on, and in hindsight, I can remember it taking a lot more effort to get off than on We tried not to mess up Mum's make-up too much, and we didn't touch her earings because we knew they were precious . It was just that the eyeshadow kept crumbling .... but that lipstick was good, boy! Did we make the best clown noses!

I finished off my outfit with a · net veil

contraption on my head and James grabbed Dad's sports jacket, that looked more like an overcoat that a flasher might wear on him.

We stood in front of the mirrors together and laughed ourselves hysterical.

It wasn't until hours later that Dad found us, pretending we were on our way to "work'', (I had my doll in a pram, wheeling her down the hallway. Why I was taking her to work, I don't know).

It was grouse being a grown-up.

We laughed at everything and played so well together that afternoon.

We had two big cheesy grins for Dad's camera too, which is handy to look at now that James isn't so easy to get along with.

CREATIVE WRITING GIMLI Although you can sympathise with other people and their tragedies, nothing can compare with your own personal tragedy. The death of my dog Gimli was the most traumatic event that has ever taken place in my life. Knowledge that he would soon need to be put down did not prepare me for the unbelievable loss I felt: the salty tears 1 shed stung my face. Gimli will forever be a symbol of my childhood. I have few memories of the five years before we got him and he has been a prominent figure in my life ever since.

When I was young and imagined 1 could have three wishes, one of them would always be that Gimli would live forever.

Gimli was an important member of my family and he was always there for me; when 1 was upset about something I could tell him all about it and he would lick my tears away. I always believed that Gimli would be the one I cried to when someone important in my life died .

Unfortunately he was the first.

Gimli had been sick for about a month, his arthritis was getting worse and the vet believed he had an inflamed liver. A dose of tablets made some improvement but afterwards his condition deteriorated: he could hardly walk and slept most of the day. The vet suggested an operation to determine the cause of the problem, but through discussions, my family decided that he would not survive the anaesthetic and that he would eventually have to be put down; any other course of action would have been selfish. As we knew this, we spoilt Gimli rotten: feeding him Monte Carlos and allowing him to sleep on the couch. Soon Gimli started falling down the stairs and urinating inside the ultimate degradation for this proud dog. My sisters and I winced whenever he attempted to climb or walk down the stairs leading to our room. On one occasion my brother witnessed Gimli throwing himself down them, landing flat on his stomach.

On Saturday the 15th of May, Gimli kept collapsing - his legs just couldn't hold him up any more. I left for work at lOam giving him a kiss goodbye, at 11 o'clock Gimli was put to sleep; Dad told me about it in the car. I kept trying to tell myself that Gimli was in pain and that he would no longer be suffering, but it was to no avail, the tears came gushing down my face. I thought I had gotten over the shock when I saw Gimli's favourite rug hanging on the washing line - he was lying on it when I left in the morning. This forced on me the realisation that Gimli really was dead. I sobbed myself to sleep with the awful knowledge that I'd neve r again be able to see my dog or tell him off for snoring. I had lost the best dog in the world.

The next morning I buried my h ead into th e couch where he used to sleep, I could still smell his slee py, doggy sme ll. I c lung to this desperately; the smell and photos were the only physical ways to prove that Gimli had ever existed. I didn't want him to be forgotte n. For the whole day I cried at the slighte st provocation - I fe lt so alon e and e mpty ; no on e else in my family see med as affec ted as I did , maybe they've experien ced worse - 1 know I hadn't. I knew that Gimli wouldn't be suffe ring but I still missed him and wanted him to kn ow I loved him. In my praye rs I told him to vi sit me in heaven when I died and it comforted me lO know that he knew others up th e re. In my mind most religions got it wrong, animals do have souls.

I will always miss Gimli, he is the kind of dog people would tell their grand c hildren a bout.

Seeing things such as his collar evoke me mori es of him hunting lizards, biting people at slumb er parties and vomiting at Easter from eating too many easter eggs. Talking about Gimli to oth er people is hard - responses can range from sincere sympathy to comments such as "he was only an animal". Only others who have lost a beloved pet can truly understand. 1 know his death doesn't compare with the horrors of war or the famine in third world countries, but this is my personal grief - Gimli meant the world to me.

On the outside I was withering away pale, weak, frail.

Callously it sucked the life from my veins.

I got used to the c ramps, the h eadac hes, the obscured vision.

They were all insignifica nt.

I was spurred on by the trepidation which plagued my mind when I heard those words; failure, imperfectio n, second best.

I was angry for a while, but who can I blame?

The media, fashion industries, or society as a great mass of uninformed , uncaring imbecil es?

Yes I was angry, but no I couldn't accuse anyone.

Perhaps it was my fault, being so weak, not taking control?

I tried, God knows I tTied, but I lost.

It was my obsession, food the enemv.

It was my life, my life was it.

"C'mon Sarah, you can do it," I would sav.

It was just too strong.

Curled up in a foetal position, my eyes are shut tightly now.
