PRINCIPAL'S REPORT

From this my first year at Catholic Ladies' College, there are two happenings that I would highlight as being of major significance to the life of the school.

The first of these was the completion and opening of the new Religious Education Centre. Already students have learned to appreciate the special atmosphere of this lovely new building. It will be a place where I hope many will be able to experience the quiet of reflective prayer and the joy of celebrated liturgy, a place where people may hear the word of God and grow in and through that word. The fact that the community of the school saw this as a project of importance, into which so many were prepared to put energy and effort and imagination, shows that to this community the school is primarily a meeting-place with God. The second event of significance to me has been the establishment of the Peer Support Programme, an opportunity for Year 10 students to support and befriend Year 7 students and to grow in their own confidence and qualities ofleadership in doing so. This is a tangible way of demonstrating that care and concern for one another, which must be at the heart of our school, if we are to be what we claim - a community of faith.

God has blessed us with many gifts in the course of 198 7. The Religious Education Centre and the Peer Support Programme will be two signs of his loving presence among us that we take into 1988.

May I thank all of these people - staff, students and parents, who have made me feel so welcome at Catholic Ladies' College this year. I am especially grat eful to Mrs Margaret Barratt, the Deputy Principal, for her whole-hearted and self-effacing commitment to the school and its students, and to the community of the Sisters of Charity for their unfailing kindness and hospitality.

PEER SUPPORT

198 7 saw the establishment of the Peer Support Program at Catholic Ladies' College. The Program was seen as providing a more structured way of - making easier for Year 7 students the transition from Primary to Secondary education.

- providing a greater support network for students.

- encouraging students to take some responsibi li ty for supporting each other.

- enabling students to see the very positive impact they can have on their peers, and realise their capacity for leadership.

The adoption of the Program involved six staff members undertaking a two-day training workshop. All Year I 0 students were then presented with the idea, aims and processes of the Program and given the opportunity to volunteer to train as Peer Support Leaders. From the fifty volunteers thirty were randomly selected. These students took part in a three day training programme and, after careful planning, the Program was launched. During the fourteen week Program each leader met with her group of Year 7 studen ts for activities and d iscussion. The teacher leaders were available for guidance and support.

An evaluation of the Program showed a very positive response from both Year 7 and Year JO students as their comments show.

Peer Support will continue at Catholic Ladies' College in 1988 .

OPENING OF THE RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CENTRE On 19th August the n ew Religious Education Centre was blessed and open ed by His Grace Archbishop Little. Th e Centre has been planned to provide an appropriate setting for liturgies and prayer, and to provide for indoor and outdoor teachin g areas. Its setting takes advantage of o ur bea utiful, natural surround ings and provides a peaceful atmosphere, whi le still b eing access ible from the rest of the school.

For the initial inspiration of the des ign , we are inde bted to Mr J o hn J am ieson , Dep uty Principal at Catholic Ladies ' College, 1979 to 1986. It was J ohn 's idea, too , to in volve students, parents and teac hers in the actual building, and there are many in the school communi ty who can truly feel that they have a share in this building.

Mr Dav id Wrig ht, who designed and created th e beautiful stained-glass windows, ha s given visual form to the Euch aristic th em e that wi ll b e central to the use of this building.

We thank all o f those w ho have contributed to th e crea tion of this bea utifu l bui ldin g. Notab le among them, Mr Leo Chiocci o f Quadric, a ge n erous fri end o f the College who supervised the construction , Mr Brendan O'Sulli va n , the builder, Mr Da vi d Wright, and of co urse Sister Patricia Nun an for her enthusiastic suppo rt for 1hc proj ect.

STUDENTS SLAVES TO SPORTS? C. L. C has many varied sports for us students to try out for. They are the Swimming Squad, Athletics Squad, Netball Teams, Basketball Teams, and the Cross Country Teams. Hard work, practice and the maximum of effort is required as well as all of the members having that well known C.L.C. sporting spirit. Many students achieve their goal of making it into the squad or team. I'd like to introduce to you a few of our sporting stars The Interschool swimming carnival was held early this year at the State swimming Centre, with C.L.C running in at third place. One of the swimmers in the squad was a year 9 student, Pauline Loftus Hills.

Pauline did and still does training regularly to stay up with the high standard, in which she has to compete. She trains with the Diamond Valley Swimming Club. In the 6 years of her.competing, Pauline has attained 12 trophies and a silver medal in the Victorian Championships Butterfly event. Her future ambition is to make it into the Australian Swimming Championships as she believes that she can achieve a higher standard there.

The Aths inter school Carnival came next on our agenda. Monica Williams was one of the out going Athletes in our squad. Last year Monica received a gold medal in the Victorian Championships for her 800 meters. Monica only trains in her Summer Aths Season. She has her share of medals and trophies for a year 8 student. But she feels that she c;an improve on her skills and techniques.

Daniella and Angela Bouos are two sisters of sport, thex compete in Athletics and Basketball together. And Dan abo plays a bit of Netball.

They enjoy each others company a lot and Angels agrees that it is good to be involved wiili the family in sport. Daniella has received 10 Vic· torian medals and 29 trophies whilst Angela has received 12 Victorian medals and 13 trophies. Angela hali her mind set on the Olympics. I'm sure that Daniella has too.

Andrea Bensch of year IO plays Netball. She Cloesn't train for it although competes 2 times a week. She is in 2 teams, and they are: The Mid Hens and The Jigsaws. Her favourite positions on the court are Centre, Goal Attack and Goal Defence. Andrea's a·m in Netball is the Victorian team. She has tried out for this 2 times rmw. Although this goal hasn't been achieved as yet, Andrea holds 10 trophies and 9 badges to her name, she also plays soft ball and tennis.

I think that Basketball is a hard game to play yet Carleigh Evans of our year 7 doesn't seem to have any trouble coping at all. Carleigh plays championship basketball for Eltham and also in a team for Rosanna East. She trains for these 4 times a week in all. Carleigh believes that individual competition isn't as much fun to play as a team sport. Her aim in basketball is to get into the Victorian Basketball Team but that is still a little bit further ahead of her at the moment.

As we all know running is only for the fit and well adjusted, and is over all a hard sport to do if you have to nui any further than one kilometre. But our little Adele Willet doesn't believ<; so. Adele competes regularly in little ~thletics and Cross Country competitions on Saturdays. She also belongs to the Diamond Valley Little Ath's club and also competes in the summer track and field events. This year in the Inter-school team Adele came 3rd in the 1500 metres. She also plays Basketball, Netball and learns dancing in her spare time.

Now that you have been able to get to know some of our sporting achievers and fellow competitors, you could one day become just as successful as them by just giving any sport a go. You don't know you might even have a bit of fun doing it. So come on give it a go.

SPORTSWEEK Sporting act1v1t1es at C.L.C. were highlighted this year during National P.E. Week wh ich took place durin g October. The week commenced with a gym display performed by the very ta lented gymnasts of the junior schoo l, and also included o ther activities such as fitness testing, a healthy B.B.Q lunch prov ided by the Mothers ' Auxihary and a huge, monster aerobics session. The week finish ed o ff with staff versus student gam es, arranged 'Its a knockout' style. It was great to see so many students participating in the various activities offered during the week, a further example of th e marvellous support and contribution students and teachers give to sport at C.L.C. DECEMBER, 1986

Canoe Trip It was a long trip to "Heard's Carvan Park", but it was all worth it.

For four days we tackled the rapids. Our instructors , Rick, Nick and Stud persevered, and we made it down the Goulbum . The weather was fantastic and we had an exciting 4 days trying to stop our food and clothing from getting water logged. The only thing my partner and I regret is that I never found soft ground to pitch my tent.

Base Camp (Canoe - Rockclimb - Bushwalk) The Year 10 Base Camp was an amazing experience. We canoed , we ab-sailed and we bushwalked - for many of us the first time. We found out what it was like to rough it!

OUTDOOR EDUCATION

DUKE OF EDINBURGH, 198 7 PROGRESS REPORT We did a lot this year. We learned English sign language, prepared for and eventually went on a practice bushwalk. The walk was great fun, and we enjoyed our community service at Eltham Childcare Centre and Montmorency Guides. We are looking forward to completing our sport section next year and receiving our Bronze A wards.

MT. FEATHERTOP WALK -

MARCH, 1987

We arrived at Mt. Feathertop with overenthusiastic intentions about conquering the mountain which was elevated 5,000 feet into the air.

After the initial shock of seeing the mountain at a 180° angle had worn off we ventured off onto the track, quickly becoming desperate for a respite from the ongoing hills.

After sleeping through rain and hail, we were awakened by the noise of snow, which rapidly increased the water level at the bottom of our tents!' While we were descending however, we gradually stripped off woollen jumpers, tracksuits, mittens and hats to greet the river in shorts and t-shirts. After a long-deserved swim, and 5,000 feet later, it was time to depart. As usual many incriminating photos were taken as we then clung to our parents, in obvious desperation for a "cooked tea" and a doona! Once again I would like to thank Mrs. McCutchan, Miss Gillespie, Miss De Simone and Mr. Suter for all the time and effort that was evident in the preparation of the camp. Thanks' Anna Dixon

TASMANIA: JANUARY, 1987 As a finale to several years of bush walking, 6 Year 12 students and 3 staff with spouses and friends spent I 0 days in Tasmania and walked the Overland Track from Cradle Mountain to Lake St. Clair. The track can be covered in 5 days, but allowing I 0 enabled several delightful side trips to visit waterfalls and climb both Mt. Ossa (Tasmania's highest) and Mt. Oal<leigh where several days' walk can be seen at a glance. The usual Tasmanian conditions prevailed : misty rain, deep mud on the track, and snow showers on the last day, but there were also days for swimming in clear pools, and panoramic views. It was an unforgettable adventure for all.

OUR FINNISH EXCHANGE STUDENT

A Description of My Home Town I live in Palokka, which actually is not a town. It is an area of about 6000 inhabitants. Palokka is situated in central Finland. The nearest town is six kilometres from us; it is Jyvaskyla with 65 000 inhabitants.

We do most of our shopping there, except for foad.

Palokka belongs to the rural district ofJyvaskyla. It is a nice place to live. We have two lakes with small sand beaches, a mountain with a jogging path and much forest with good cross country skiing facilities in winter. Apart from that we can play other sports like tennis, soccer, Finnish baseball, athletics, cycling many indoor sports, skating and ice hockey in winter. The nearest down hill skiing lift is six kilometres from Palokka. Cross country skiing on the ice of a lake is enjoyable especially on sunny days.

There are different sort of houses in Palokka. Most of them are single family houses but there are also apartment houses and houses con· nected together. The street in which I live has only single family houses.

Ours is made of red brick and a half of it is two story. We have to build houses so that they will be very warm during our cold winters.

Windows are usually triple glass. We have three bedrooms, a kitchen , a living-room and some other rooms. The floor and ceiling are wood. A really typical part of Finnish life is a sauna, which we use nearly every night except in summer.

We also have a nice garden. Unlike Australian native gardens our garden as very different, from season to season. In summer it is colour· ful with grass, flowers , birches and pines. In winter, the ground is covered with snow, and the trees are bare.

The snow is white and cold. It often looks beautiful when it is snow· ing. We usually get snow at the end of November or·at the beginning of December. We have snow probably 50-100 cm on the ground. there is much work for snow ploughs to clear the streets and we have to dig out paths and car-parks as well. The snow starts to melt in March and it disappears mostly in April, but that varies in different parts of Finland.

My school is less than half a kilometre from home. I go there on foot or by bike. The school is quite big with about I 000 students from year 1 to 12. It is a lot different from CLC. Finnish schools are co-ed ones and we n ever have to wear a school uniform either. The length of a school day varies, which is nice. We get hot lunches every day and we do not have to pay for it ourselves. The subjects I do are Finnish, English, Swedish, French, maths, physics, chemistry, biology, geography, history, religion , P.E. and music. Our school year starts in the middle of August. When we first go to school we are 7 years old or turning 7.

My mum works as a teacher in a kindergarten and my dad has a factory and a flow er shop with the undertakers. I also have a 20 year old brother. H e studies wood engineering in another town and he spends weekends and holidays at home. We do not have any pets.

Like quite many families we also have a summer cottage. It is on an island beside a lake. There is a very old sauna as well. We fish, pick up berries and mushrooms, windsurf, water ski and just relax there. In the evenings we usually have a barbeque with sausages and bread and we may play some games together.

Finland looks very different from Australia; the scenery and the natura, the climate, also the houses and streets .. . But I think people are the same everywhere once you get to know them.

PUBLIC SPEAKING 198 7 was a most successful year for Carolyn Evans of Year I I. For the second success ive year Carolyn competed in the State Final of the Plain English Speaking Competition at Wilson Hall , Melbourne University, and this time she was the winner of the state fin al. Carolyn also won the State section-of the J aycees Public Speaking Competition, so represented Vi ctoria at both the J aycees National Final in Brisbane and the Plain English Speaking Final in Penh. About the Play '/assure you that unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven . ' (Matthew 18:3) 'Godspell' (the anglo·saxon wo rd for 'Gospel '), was a sm as h.hit of Broadway in the early seventies. It is characteristic of this era in its bright and witty presentation of the script and score.

The intention of this play is not to seem childish, but to sho w the innocence and black and white logic that is the treasure o f youth , ye t too soon is replaced by the money·centred routine of the grown ·up's world.

In this playground, free o f binding social and monetary respon· sibilities, the innocent players learn about all aspects, good and bad. o f human nature. We, the audience as well as the playe rs, learn these valuable truths under the ever watchful eye of the 'Visitor' (J es us), who brings them to us.

POETRY THE BLACK DRAPED GHOST Every year on halloween night The children gather, no fail, At the old hermit's hut at the edge of a wood, To hear a hair raising tale.1 The hermit's name was George McRae Strange adventures; that he had, but one from his youth was the strangest of all A nd actually was quite bad.1 McRae was walking home from work It was quite dark all round, When close behind him suddenly There came an eerie sound.

He turned around and saw a light A glowing flame of blue, It was moving towards him now And he didn 't know what to do.

All at once he had the urge To touch the bright blue light, He reached up very longingly But it disappeared from sight.

Before him was a headstone Engraved in black and gold The name engraved was 'George McRae' The poor man 's blood went cold. "/ don't understand," George stuttered, "Please tell me what this means, Does it mean that I shall die soon Or am I dead now, as it seems?" " You 're a lonely man," the ghost replied, " You 're always selfish and mad, This does no good to anyone It only makes you sad.'"

COLONIAL SCHOOL COLONIAL SCHOOL 15/4/1987 -

YEAR 9

Everyone was eager to start the session. Once costumes were sorted out (we looked ridiculous) we all sat down to a lesson that we thought was going to be really slack. However, to our surprise, the teacher (who looked really mean) laid down many strict rules which we were to follow.

Firstly , our teachers (Madam Kenny, Madam Chalmers) received a cane to keep us in control. They were not hesitant to use it. Then we were given slates, chalk and cloth. The slates were used as an alternative to paper as it was expensive in those days. On one side of the slate we were to write 'Sir' and were to raise that as we would raise our hand in class.

We learned about the lifestyle - mainly about the currency. It was difficult to pick up - but we managed. After that we had a writing session. We used ink and a nib (this time we used paper!). Our instructions for writing were: bottom on the chair, feet together and on the floor, legs together, back straight, hand high and nib at a 45° angle.

After all this we were supposed to attempt writing the elaborate colonial writing.

When our hands were not in use (i.e. writing) we were expected to sit on them. After the writing session we were dismissed.

Overall, we all enjoyed the day and thought it to be very educational.

Our favourite part was learning the new style of writing and ex per· imenting with it.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES THE PRODUCTION OF 'MY BROTHER JACK' This year George Johnson's 'My Brother Jack' was chosen as one of the set English texts to be studied by V.C.E. English students. In order to gain a better understanding and knowledge of the text, a group of Year 12 students from C.L.C. and Marcellin College banded together to script and perform the text.

The scripting process lasted many weeks during which the important scenes from the text were chosen, edited and scripted. This process allowed the students to analyse closely characters and character development. Following this process the final product was a play which depicted both the important events in the life of the main character , David Meredith, and significant events in Australia's history such as the Depression and World War II. The play was first performed at the 'Catholic Schools ' Drama Festival' and later on two consecutive evenings at C.L.C. For both the students involved in actually performing the play , and the students who saw it, the play was valuable in their study of the text because it made the text more accessible to the students , enabling them to actually visualise the characters and plot development.

S.R.C. THE SCIENCE REPORT This year has been a splendid year for science at the College. Several noteworthy students have contributed to this.

CLC once again has a student selected to attend the National Science Summer School. Odette Li (Year I I) will attend the school in Canberra in January.

Deborah Rossell (Year I I), after completing a difficult exam in October, was selected to train with 19 other students from all over Australia for the World Chemistry Olympiad. After the training period the four best students will travel to Finland for the Olympiad in June, I 988.

In the Science Talent Search two entries received bursaries.

Cassandra Meagher in Year 9 presented an excellent research paper entitled " How does evaporation affect pool level?" Cassandra's work went on to be displayed in the "Science Beyond 2000" Awards.

Emma Butler and Monique Robinson in Year 8 presented a model of a hot water system.

In the National Chemistry Quiz several students won Higher Dis· tinction Certificates. They were Odette Li, Deborah Rossell (Year I I), Lara Breen, Amanda Emerson, Joanne Humphrey, Sue Mackay, Kendrea Pope, Natalie Rankin, Cathy Sonnemann (Year IO), Ruth Rossell and Anthea Scott (Year 9). While in the Australian Science Competition Distinctions went to Narelle Farmer (Year 7), Maryza Khalil (Year 9) and Natalie Rankin (Year I 0). Natalie also received a Certificate of Honour.

Several excursions were undertaken. Year 12 visited PIT for a day of chemical analysis. Year I I visited a rock platform at Flinders, a bush community at Kinglake and the Zoo Education Centre. Geology excur· sions took place in Term 4 when Year 9 visited Studley Park and Year 8 visited Mt Fraser. Year 7 visited the Zoo Education Centre in Term 3.

The place to be seen of a Thursday lun chtime at CLC is Room 15 - m eeting spot of the school's 28 SRC Reps and one staff representative.

Meetings are usually a hive of activity - food being eaten, ideas being thrown around and considerable organisation taking place. This year's SRC have been an enthusiastic bunch this is evident from the ir list of achievem ents. As well as the usual Casual Clothes Days , Hot Dog Day, Donut Day, Litter Week, Talent Ques t and St. Patrick's Day Celebrations, this year's SRC has taken a giant step forward in introducing Market Day - a mini fete run over one lunchtim e. I hope this can be continued next year. Other proj ects this year included raising money to provide th e Peer Support Group with a filing cabinet, selling CLC pens and d ecorating the much malign ed sick bay. Plans were afoot to produce a schoo l newspaper, but unfortunately these fell by the wayside.

As we ll as providing the students with food and fi.in , the SRC involved the school in raisin g money for severa l needy charities - the 40 Ho ur Famine for Community Aid Abroad, the Royal Children 's Hospital Good Friday Appeal and the Legacy Appeal through the sellin g of Legacy badges.

In I 98 7 we a lso aimed to get more recognitio n for the SRC and its m embers. A Constitutio n was drawn up, outlining th e role of the SRC in the school, its functi o ns and the procedures it 'operates by.

I would like to thank a ll SRC Representatives this year for the ir support, enthusiasm and hard work and in particular o ur Vice·Pres iclent, Kati e Mulvenna , and Staff Representative , Miss Gleeson. I wish next year's SRC all th e best of luck.

CENTRAL AUSTRALIA TOUR, JULY 1987 At 6: 15 a.m. th irty·eigh t Year 11 students with Mrs. McCutchan, Mrs. Barratt, Mrs. Eynaud, and Mr. Webb set off in the Hussey coach for Loxton in South Austra lia o n the way to Uluru and Alice Springs. Forgotten supplies were picked· u p in Bend igo. T he days were clea r and sunny and the nights sub-zero or so it seem ed.

T he hi ghli ght of the trip was ca mping in the Oodnadatta desert closely fo llowed by our climb of Uluru and Right over the top. We surv ived three b lown out tyres to make it to Alice Springs nine days later for our Right home. We made a considerable impression on the Northern Territory.

WATER ...

Turn a handle and out it comes Running clean and fresh, into your thirsty glass.

Run to the river, where the water flow filthy, scoop some up, into an old tin mug Then boil it, until it's as clean as . . . the tap stuff When it goes, drinkers run frantically.

During drought, necessity is greater.

Tongues desperate for something cold, Need it quick or .

Poor old water never has a say, fortunate for drinkers, who take it for granted.

Always there to take and drink from .

THE WITCH queen of doom upon her broom,

The swept the star-lit sky.

Her dangling nose Nearly reaching her ten twisted toes.

In her brew She put some stew Made out of snakes Which makes you ache.

Her big black cloak Can make her disappear in smoke.

When she goes, she takes her hat And she mustn't forget her little black cat.

A candle burning bright glowing lighing our way The innocent flame dances and flickers brighter and brighter Till slowly ever so slowly The flame dies The wax falls drip ... drip.
