In the year of the 'I\-.ienty Third Olympiad, many young Australians in Los Angeles proved that they were capable of producing 'personal test' performances which went far teyong even their highest expectations. "Caritas '84" includes many contrilutions and examples of students' life and work which are 'personal test' achieverrents and we hope this edition of the College magazine affords great pleasure and satisfaction as the students of 1984 look throogh its pages now and in years to care. The year was marked by many and varied activities, perhaps the rrost notable l::eing the completion of a magnificent new luilding extension which features a music and drarr6 centre , with provision for group performances and music tuition rooms. Included in the project are also a new Religious Education teaching area and resource room and a large double classroom area, with canrron-room facilities for H.S.C. students.
Staffroom facilities have also teen
added for Music, English and Mathematics faculties. The luilding project which caters for the rapid expansion in
Dotrrc
class size was ready for occupancy at the carrrencerrent of Term 111, and forms a natural extension to the existing architectural design. The teautiful grounds and imposing luilding of our College certainly make learning easier, lut ultimately it is the

REPORT ON STU DENT TEAC HER DAY The d ay sta rted well : the whole hou se sle pt in a nd we had to ma ke a dash to school! JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHN ICOLORED DREAM COAT For many people 'Joseph ' was the first live production they had seen . There were many excited whispers and giggles echoing around the walls of the Comedy Theatre as we waited for the curtains to rise. Some of the St. Francis girls had put on their own production in Primary School and were exchanging 'learned' opinions of how they thought the show wou ld go. The rest of us sat in comfortable chairs (how about getting some for the Yr. 8 rooms?) and hoped to be enterta ined but expected to be bored. Afterall , how could a R.E. excursion be exciting? The orchestra began to play the live ly tunes that would become fami liar (favourites) over the next few hours. Finally the moment we'd a ll been waiting for arrived , and as hundreds of expectant faces turned from forbidden packets of lollies to the stage, we enterted a totally different world. Not the world of several thousand years B .C. nor that of the 20th century but a jumble of th e two where the King of Egypt looked remarkabl y like the King of Rock and Joseph was purchased as a slave with Bankcard. Anyone who thought the play was going to be boring was soon proved wrong. From the instant God told Jacob to 'Go forth and multiply' (w hich the Prophet did with remarkable speed) until the curtains dropped with the songs sti ll ringing in our ears, we were captivated by the songs , the music, the lighting and the costuming. The standard of singing was high and as nearl y the whole show was set to music.we were amazed that the lead performers - Jose ph (Danyl Cotton) and th e Narrator (Angela Ayers) didn't finish the show by croaking the last words. These two were not the on ly good performers in the show. The cast was kept small and Josephs' brothers changed in seconds to be transformed in the kings bod yguards or the Captains servants. "Elvis Presley" was another great favour ite and he gave us a good idea of why the king was so loved by people all over the world. Many of the songs echoed around th e halls ofC.L.C. for the next week but neve r did we sing with as much e nthusiasm as when the whole cast came on for the Grand Finale. All the songs and characters were greeted with vigorous applause and laughs . The cast began skipping down the ais les and Joseph came out in th e last of his many dreamcoats . This striped tent took up nearl y the whole stage. The whole production vibrated with origina lity, humor and life and the entire performance was a lmost fau ltl ess. Although many factors contributed to the excited , warm feeling a ppare nt after the show 1 believe th e main reason was summed up by Sister Joan who thoughtfully remarked , "Wasn 't .... a spunk ?" She was heartily agreed with! Carolyn Evans, Year 8
EBONY A lot of people own pet rabbits but it was different with Ebony our rabbit. We didn't really own him; he decided to stay. Even his beginning was unusual. Caught wild as a tiny black baby rabbit under a house in suburban Box Hill, he never lost his freedom . He made his home in the compost heap and what a home it was! It was cosy and warm providing perfect shelter and protection. The maze of secret passages all came out to special parts of the compost. One went to the top of the compost where he used to sit in the sun and eat at the .bushes. Another went to the back fence where it opened up to a private path leading to the ground. The last and best of all led to the gourmet bar, full of delicacies. Food ranged from lettuce and apples to bananas and cauliflower, his favourites. The whole family loved Ebony. He came when ever anyone called him and none of us ever tired of watching him. He was never any trouble and because he wasn't caged, he never tried to escape. He grew into a beautiful, health y and affectionate rabbit so full of life and energy. His death was unexpected though I had noticed he wasn't as lively as usual and his eyes were full of pus. Despite all we could do to help him, he grew weaker and crawled under his favourite bush to die. We buried him in the backyard and we all still miss him.
A baby rabbit eyes full of pus is the work of scientific us. m yxomatosis Spike Milligan. E. Rose, Year 8

A CAUTIONARY TALE There was a little boy called Tim Whose parents rather spoilt him . They gave him cakes, andjammy buns They gave him cars and boats and guns. They gave him all the toys there were In doing this they did greatly err And then one very fateful day ... They took him down to town And said - "have anything yo u like" So Timmy chose a BIG RED BIKE. They bought him a Rosebank Stackhat too But Timmy only said "Oh Pooh " And no matter what they did He wouldn't wear that lovely lid. The next da y that silly dill had a very nasty spill He rode into a white brick wall It was a rather awful fall Now the wall is very red And Tim of course is very DEAD Cracked heads will not yo u enhance With safety never take a chance Don't be like Tim, whose dead Wear your Rosebank stackhat instead .

After a month's practice and preparation, during lessons and lunchtime, the dreaded day, the 13th August, finally arrived. At Eltham station we boarded the train and as it sped along our destination seemed too close. Upon arrival at Melbourne University the panic set in as we all recited our poems over and over again. The tension grew as we waited for our turn to come. However when it did come, we discovered with some relief, that the examiners weren 't monsters but were actually quite human. Once having said our poems we relaxed and enjoyed the rest of the day. Before leaving the University we looked around at some of the buildings including the library. For lunch we feasted on some 'delicious' food at Paradiso. After a stroll down Lygon Street, on our way back to the station , we stopped off at a 'Pasticceria e gelateria' for a gelati and some cream cakes which were a welcomed and delicious sight after 'lunch'. Once having finished eating we visited 'Casa Delle Bomboniere' where we marvelled at the various different types of sugar almonds and ornaments. Back at the station we · boarded the train, tired and extremely thankful it was all over.

RABBIT
yeor
Dawn arrived, long after I did And the hillside before me Glittered, gleamed As the sun's rays caught the early morn's crystal droplets , ,Sprinkled carelessly on the brittle grass. Movement caught my eye As a quivering nose appeared, sniffing the crisp morning air for danger. None came, and Rabbit grew bolder, Moving out onto the grassy flats, Prancing, dancing His little cottontail wriggling gaily. Stealthily, moving slowly,. quietly I aimed. Bang! Crimson red appeared like a splash of paint On the white fur of Rabbit As he was flung on the grassy flats That would be his resting place For ever. The quivering nose would smell for danger no more ; y aim was true once again. Sonia Vescovi, Year JO
KENNY, THE KENTUCKY FRIED CHICKEN You sit, lifeless, oblivious of the industry which surrounds you. Then you are lifted, dumped on a cold bench. Your body is torn apart by cruel tormentors. I too can feel their hands ripping off my limbs, The steel knives slicing into my breast. I feel the knife come down, severing my head. The hands reach into my stomach, Disembowelling me with a sharp twist. Oh, how I feel your agony, you useless wretch, Too stupid to enjoy the little life you had. What .is left for you now? They'll roll your limbs in crumbs, Immerse you in their spitting oil, Then package you into their cheap, cardboard box . You were too young to die, But too stupid to deserve the life you had. I despise you as I bite into your succulent flesh. F G •v ·. rant, I ear 10
ALL THAT CRASHING AND BANGING IS NEEDED AND LOVED There was a man who lived alone with his three daughters as he had separated from his wife. He loved his daughters very much and thought the world of them. He gave them mone y to buy clothes a nd records a nd even let the m turn the stereo up as loud as they wanted. As long as he could read his newspape r he was quite happ y. One da y, he wanted to find out how much his daughters loved him. "As much as I love Paul ," said his eldest daughter. He was very pleased at that because he knew by the dreamy look in her eyes that she really adored Paul. "As much as I love chocolate," said the second, rathe r plump d aughter. He was also very pleased at this because you only had to take one look at the acne on her face to know that she loved lollies . "As much as bands love their drummer," said his youngest daughter. At this he was very angry and unhappy. You see although he loved his daughters, he was rather out of touch with their interests and didn't realise that the drums are essential to music. He always thought that they "merely exist to a nnoy people's fathers with all that bashing and banging business." He told his daughter Felicity to leave the house. Poor Felicity was only fifteen and as she had no other options; she had to go and work in St. Kilda . She hated the work but the other girls were very kind to her and to cheer her up took her to the Blue Light disco . At the disco, Felicity met a boy whom everyone called Bub. She was rapt in him immediately for he was so nice and goodlooking. He had brown hair, a slim but muscular build , beautiful teeth and an irresistible smile. He wore reflector sunglasses and looked very mys terious. The problem was that nobod y knew anything about him except that he played the drums in a band . For the next week after the disco, Felicity tried every conceivable way of finding him . She rang up any music teache rs from the papers to ask if they had a pupil called "Bub" and even asked any of her customers if they knew of any bands with a drummer called Bub, but it was no use. At the next Blue Light, Felicity was ecstatic to see Bub, for the others had never seen him before last week. She gritted her teeth and asked if she could dance with him . Bub danced with her all evening and revealed that he'd seen her last week but had been too shy to ask her to dance . Felicity was very happy and for a while she could forget about her father whom she really did love. At the end of the evening, Bub asked Felicity if she'd like to come to a parish where his band were playing so that she could listen to them , she said yes, and arranged to meet him at the hall where it was being held . During the first half, the band played two songs and Felicity was amazed at how well they played, and especially at how good Bub was. But she received a shock, for after the song, in walked her father and she watched as he slid into a seat a few rows in front of her. She was of course very upset because she loved her father very much and it had been very hard for her to leave him simply because he didn't understand . But she had a plan. During the interval she sneaked behind stage and asked Bub to play one song without the drums . He was confused and puzzled, but did as she asked. When the song ended, Felicity's father stood up and walked out of the hall. Felicity ran after him . "Dad! Wait! Why are you going?" "Felicity! I'm so glad to see you," he said. "I just realised then that you really love me more than the others. When the band played without the drums I almost died . It sounded even worse. I realise now that the band doesn't only love to have a drummer but they need him as well! Just as you love and need me. Oh, I'm so sorry, Felicity! " When he said that, Felicity gave him a great big hug and said that she did love him very much and she had missed him too . So they went home together and lived happily ever after. And by know Felicity had realised that she loved the drummer as much as the band needed him , and so she found herself a boyfriend . Bub remained the same gorgeous guy, but he too learned something- that music and his mates didn't have to be the only thing that he cared about. ]. Van Bavel, Year JO

NO PLACE LIKE HOME I packed m y bag with haste throwing in an ything and everythin g in sight. It wasn't unti l late r that I realised I had nothing I wou ld need . It had become very dark quickl y and the city lights were ablaze, but that night they we re n't the wa rm , exciting lights that shone whe n I went out with my fri e nds. They we re cold and m yste riou s, e mpty. I walked for hou rs while the me rcury d ro pped and my shoes fill ed with the earl y mo rning moistu re. I had tried to rest several times but the q iscom fo rt o f the cold gro und was unbearable. T he streets we re exceptio nally quiet. Not just quie t but dead sile nt, the silence that m akes yo u r sto mac h turn . T he sick feeling was getting wo rse. It was n't un til I heard a tre me ndou s roa r fro m the bottom of m y sto mac h that I realised l hadn 't eate n since lunch time. We we re having spaghetti fo r tea too, blow it! My favo urite ! I had thirty cents left'a nd I knew that was n't going to get me fa r. I sat in silence o n a street seat whe n I realised that in the resta ura nt beside me the re we re little bas kets filled with bread o n the tables . I reached into my lu ggage a nd pulled o ut a Coles th row-away bag. Boldly I walked into the e mpty resta ura nt a nd we nt to three ta bles, de positing the conte nts of the baskets into m y bag, whe n from be hind the curtain s at the bac k of the room a ppeared a very angry looking old m an "What a re yo u d oing? Get ou t!" I ra n o ut o f the sho p with the old ma n o n m y heels. Fortuna tel y he gave up the chase by the time I had reached the second block. My clothes we re all dirty, m y stomac h aching from lack of food , m y bod y numb from cold and exhau stio n . As I wo ndered aimlessly d ow n the alleys I slo uched against a bin a nd happily ate m y bread . T he fi rs t ni ght had been and go ne a nd the second was n't far off. My eyes were held o pe n , it a ppeared, by the bags that had d evelo ped under the m . My h air was ta ngled and my clothes smelt. I knew I had to have a good n ight's slee p soon a nd I was in need o f more fo od . I e nte red a n alley way th at was d ark and quiet so I decided tha t, afte r I had fo und some fo od , this was whe re I would retire for th e night. It was n't lo ng before I had fo und some food that people had rece ntl y le ft o n a seat nea r a bin . Pleased with m y find I sat limply in th e alley between the bins and a te m y fo od . It was n't un til the n th a t I beca me conscio us o f the fact tha t I had been thinking co ntinuo usly o f home a nd the wi sh to be bac k home with mum was stro ng. It mu st have been two o'clock. I had never see n a nybod y so tall as he was or nearl y as wide. H e towe red over me like a nothe r building a nd his fee t were massive. As he reached dow n a nd grabbed m y ha nd I sank my teeth into his flesh , kicked him whe re it hu rt, a nd fl ed. "Oh m y God ." Yes! At the other e nd of th e alley was a nothe r solid ma n but of a smalle r fra me tha n the fi rst. Th oughts of what they had in mind fo r me rushed throu gh my mind . I had no escape. My life rushed before my eyes as I was convinced the e nd was near. I stru ggled again st the two me n , awa re that it was useless. "Calm down Girl y," I heard o ne of the m say. "Do n't you kn ow help wh e n yo u see it?" "Girly, we' re police me n . ls you r na m e Kerry? Yo ur mother is ve ry wo rried a bout yo u and wa nts you home." My battle stopped . T he fi ght was over. Tea rs ca me to m y eyes as I tho ught o f m y mo ther. She wa nted me home, even after I had been so selfish a nd foo lish . As I sa t bac k in the police car I th o ug ht of o ne of my favo urite fa iry tale movies, "Th e Wi za rd o f Oz", a nd though t abo u t how true the magical words we re, "The re's no place like ho me." H .S.C. CAMP It's lights out time o n th e first nig ht o f the 1984 H .S. C. ca mp a t Gilwell Park , Ge m brook . Tho ugh it's past midnig ht, we're all just d ev io usly killin g tim e until the 3a. m. B.Y.O. junk-food rage in "C uckoo" cabin. Mea nwhile, it's a good cha nce to sna tch a couple o f ho urs sleep o r, as in the case of m y h ype ractive roo mm ates, Michele a nd Ka re n , to di splay som e aerobi cs tale nt (o r lac k of it), wi thin the ve ry limited space of o ur room . On a rri val at the ca mp site we spilled o ut of the two buses a nd a "runne r" from most cliques cha rged in the gene ral directio n of the cabin s in the ho pe of reserving o n.e, while the rest of th e gro up foll o wed doggedl y, draggin g bla nke ts, s l e~ pin g- b ags a nd suitcases be hind . Those wh o eithe r couldn 't be both e red ex pe ndin g that ene rgy o r who had lost the braw l o n the doOI·ste p of a cabin, piled into th e five-roo med dormito ry. The good news for girls in th e dorm. was th at th e re was quick access to th e toilets a nd showers. The bad ne ws was th a t those o f us (like m yself) who need o ur bea uty slee p, had to put up with e ne rgetic neighbo urs thumpin g their ow n style of Morse-cod e messages o n th e wall. The re was a mixed res po nse to o ur first (a nd las t) ae robics class . To ince nti ve songs fro m Flas hda nce we got o urse lves into positio ns we hadn 't tho ug ht we re possible - and almost didn 't get o ut o f the m again ! At least everybod y t ried. T hat is, some tried to ENJOY doing the exe rcises , some tried just to DO the e xe rcises, and some tried to esca pe o ut the back d oo r! Puttin g o ur a rtistic tale nts into p rac tice in the a fte rn oon was hun gry work , so a barbeq ue tea we nt down reall y we ll , exce pt fo r a certain group for wh om it didn 't "go d own" a t all ; Ma ria a nd compa ny chose teatime to go explo rin g th e bu sh -a nd arrived back just in time to dry the dishes!! Ka trina Pavo ne was o ur guest speake r - a re p1·ese ntative o f those lucky, LUC KY people who have pu t their H .S.C. year successfull y behind the m . Sha recounted to us so me of the gru elling detail s of he r bi g yea r with sadi stic reassura nces of o ur gradu al disintegratio n in the coming mo nth s. Thou gh ve ry helpful , Ka trina left us all feeling basically suicidal. (Gabrielle too k immedia te actio n to e nd he r sorro ws, but e nded up with concussio n o nl y a nd she was bac k slogging a way a t her books within a fe w d ays). Thursday mornin g, the re we re mo re teachers a t th e bre kkie ta ble tha n students! Abo ut half of us bothe red to ma ke an a ppeara nce - a nd that was a n appearance bette r fo rgotte n !! Bronwyn a tte mpted to liven us up wi th a n earl y ga me of volleyball ; it was played sitting dow n ! At least that managed to get the to p halves of us fun ctio ning properl y. Bo bby a nd Mr. Mo rgan held a real mind-be nde r of a math s session. We learnt how to construct a ... um ... well , a green-and-white, 80-sided , 3-dim ensio nal OBJECT ! I'm sure that. will be a mazingly useful to us in la te r life - in fac t, nearl y as helpful as Mrs. J oss's educatio n session which certainl y held eve ry girl 's inte rest. Despite the miserabl y cold weathe r, some eager little fi shies braved conditio ns a nd visited the da m down a mo ngst the trees, beyond the cabin s. Shive ring, they made their way o n ha nds and knees alo ng the log which protruded into the freezing dam , a nd then stood uncertainly at the ed ge , posing for photos until they we re give n a quick shove in ... Afte rnoon tea was great fun - the girls in fa ncy dress looked almost as o ut of place as a ce rtain three teache rs did with babies in their arms! Ms . McCra ne wouldn't let go of hers, Brun o a nd his wife took turn s at holdin g th eirs, and Ms. Pe ndavingh was trying to give hers to everybody passing by!! ~·, The mass was on e of the highlights of our camp . The church was a n o utside one so we we re surrounded by nature . By candlelight Mo rag led the singin g, g uitarists strummed alo ng and babies howled o ut of time. By Christine's T ORCHLIGHT the priest tried to read the sermon. ~ A typical Aussie bu shdance had e veryone waltzin g around , even our Japanese stude nts who see med to be e njoying themselves . To sa ve a ny e mbarrass me nt, I won't me ntion the na me of our budding "Summertime" soloist who provided some light e ntertainm ent for us, but I will suggest tha t the ge ne ral o pinio n is tha t she should stick to P.E. teaching ... The re we re great plans for a midnight feast, that final night, but most of us we nt into a deep slee p as soon as we hit the beds , absolutely exha usted from the days' activities. O ve rall , the H .S. C . ca mp had been a lot of fun , and as we a - d o u r luggage beside the bu ses the next day, I do n 't doubt tha t
