Historical Retrospective -
A look al the History of ClC
On Sa turday, 14t h August 198 1, about 2000 people assemb led at t he new Ca th o lic Ladies' College at E ltha m , to assis t in th e Bl ess ing and Ope ni ng of th e sc h ool. His Grace, Arc h b isho p Knox, pe r fo rmed the cere m o nies, includ ing t h e u nve iling of a bronze p la que e mbedded in a la rge bou lder of natura l roc k. T ha t importa nt occas io n took p lace te n yea rs ago, but as we celebra te thi s a nni ve rsary of ours, we need to look fur t he r back into o ur hi story, pas t the beginnings a t E ltha m , to t he very incep tio n of Ca tho li c La dies' Co ll ege. The sc hool we know today ac tua ll y bega n in 1889 as " St. Pntric k' s Co nve nt Sc hoo l fo r Secondary Educa tio n" , run by t he Sis ters o f C h a rity. In 190 1, th e comm u nity moved fr o m its s ite in V ictoria Pa ra de, to G ipps St reet, Eas t M e lbourne. In 1902 , as new sc hool bu ild ings we re fini shed , the sc h oo l offi c ia ll y beca m e Catho li c Lad ies' Co llege. Three hund red stude nts a tte nded tha t first year a t E ltha m , guided by seve ntee n me mbe rs of sta ff, te n of who m we re Siste rs o f C ha rity. T od ay, we ha ve d oubled th e numbe r of stude nts a nd the sta ff h as inc reased to a bout fo rty. Four of the staff w h o we re w ith the sc h oo l in 19 71 are still prese nt in 1981 : Mrs Va nd erslik a nd Mrs Casey, a nd M rs Spa in a nd Mrs J ac h . Both Mrs Spa in a nd Mrs J ac h a lso ta ught at East M e lbo urne. Catho li c La dies' Co llege, E ltha m , has made muc h progress in its te n yea rs of e xiste nce. So m e of the m ore obvious a nd rece nt signs are the new sc ie nce la b ora to ries, the e nlarge ning of the ova l, a nd th e purc hase of much sport equipme nt. Al so, to the sc h ool's c redit, the re is a nothe r fac t to be noted: C LC offers a very e xte nsive ra nge of subj ects in a ll a reas a nd form s of the sc h ool. Som etimes this is not poss ible a t a ll sc h ools, but C L C ha s a lways provided a very th orough educati o n through out its history. In the wo rd s of Hi s Grace, Arc hbi sho p Sir Fra nk Little, (at th e E nd of Year Mass , 1980) :
"It has been yet another very successful year. We hope that the school motto 'Knowledge and Virtue', in the true meaning of these words, will become a real part of the lives of those who are fortunate enough to be associated with Catholic Ladies' College." K a tri na Pavo ne

The team from CLC, Linda Smith, Joanne Banks, Cami lle Woodward, Angela Molinaro, L inda Perry,J acinta Furlong, Danielle Silvagni, Michelle Silvagni a nd J e nny Evans, won the open section of the competition. It was a very close game, with CLC winning by one goa l against Kyabram High.
After many weeks of strenuous training, our track and ield representatives for the interschool sports competed iuite successfully. Not only the runners, jumpers and hrowe rs contributed to this very eventful day, but also the eachers and students who kindly and willingly participated ts officials and supporters. CLC was the host school and nuc h effort and organisation was given to make t h e day run :moothly. We did not come home with every trophy but did nanage to obtain a trophy for t h e intermediate aggregate . We came fourth out of the eight schools that competed , a :!Tort - but next year will be ours. Delia Caddy

1981 Swimming Carnival Report
Thursday, Marc h 5th once aga in saw our rather unusua l version of a swiming carnival. Much to the 3.mazement of passers-by, CLC aga in turned out in fu ll : hee r squad rega lia , and the Greensborough Swimming Poo l resounded with fe rve nt c h a nts of support for th e four tea ms .
But the co mpetitive side of the ca rniva l was o nl y o ne feature of the day . Everyone in t he school co mmunit y was catered for during thi s e xce pti o nal da y. Acco mpli shed sw immers had the chance to e xerc ise their skills; onlookers were ab le to enjoy the ca rnival 's co lourful sights and sounds and the many " soc ia l swim!Jlers " could get in and have a go - just for the fun of it . Participation was th e theme - not winn ing or losing - and consequently many of the girls were ready, with heart 's brave toil una[frzghted , to take part in the races , riskin g their lives or pride - whichever they he ld dearest . T he results: Loyo a, fourt h ; Marita , third ; V ince ntia , runners-up ; Aikenhead , overall winners . Co ngratulations to a ll teams and many thanks to the tire less organisers . Annette K eogh

Year 9 Activity Day : l 980- l.
Yr. 9 Bushwalking: Fraser National Park The first hill was the hardest , but with enco urage ment from Mrs M cCutc han, we finally reached our goa l - a tall , dead tree . After resting, we "psyched" ourse lves up for the next hill . But by then we were initiated ; we reached th e peak easily and looked back w ith satisfaction. The walk back was fl at or downhill . We lunched at Sc hool Point , then wa lked down a long the trac k, leav ing the teache rs be hind . The scenery was beautiful , a lmost as beautiful as the sight of our own bus' Louise Scan lon
Yr. 9 Skiing: Mt Buller August '81 The skiing trip was very enjoyable and there was no one who didn't ac quire a new ski ll . Our skiin g lessons were exce lle nt , but it was a waste of time teaching us how to stop , because we had a lready worked out an easier way - just fa II ' The weather was mostly fine , and eve n the snow a nd cloud of the afternoon didn't dampen our determination to sk i down Bourke Street without fa llin g. Louise Scan lon
Year 11-Ski Weekend Afte1· about five hours of travelling we finally arrived at the Caravan Park, loaded with our ski's and boots from Rio's in Po1·epunkah, and eve1yt hing e lse that we needed. Gradually the teachers and their fami li es arrived , so we beca me one great big h appy fam ily. Saturday morning the public bus arrived to pick us up at the caravan park , and we were on our way to the slopes. We were a ll excited as we nea red Dingo-Dell where we were going to ski, but the bus just kept travelling past. We all nearly fli pped, but t h e nice bus driver turned back and dropped us off, even though ot her skiers complained. The day was bright and sun ny, really good for skiing. Some of us went straight to the top and began skiing, while the others had a private lesson by our own top ski instructor, MR BYRNES ... Thanks to th is instructor, most of us were sk iing at the top of th e slope by lunchtime. That night we went to Mass in Bright and were ente rtained by a little boy who took a fancy to Fiona Csabi and hovered over h er during Mass. When we arrived back at the Caravan Park, we built a bonfire and made our own fun. Sunday was_ an awfu l, foggy day and most of us were exh austed , with ac hing feet and legs before we even started skiin g. After skiing for most of the day without the help of our instructor, we were sh own a new technique by Mr Byrnes . After attempting to show us this "very difficult" technique, he too joined the rest of the group by toppling over in the snow. The day finally came to a close and we were on our way home. But it did not end very well, as on the way home, the tyre on the trailer blew, so we were caught in the middle of nowhere in need of a few parts. We finally arrived at school two hours late. But over all it was a fantastic weekend.

We would like to thank Mr Byrnes for organising the weekend, and also would like to thank all the teachers involved, for coming. Sonia Daris

"A.B.C . ... Look at Me" This _yea r saw the introduction of th e w rit er's wo rkshop optio n in HS C English. Th e girls have now obtained fi rst-hand experience of so me of th e ago nies and ecstacies of w riting -as -a-profession ( and have added so mewhat to A PM profits') Th e fo llowing story was one of the pieces that missed th e R oom I 3 waste paper bin .

" Damn " , the tea c her th o ught , " a late a rriva l to ope n the flood gates aga in ." Smiling reassuredl y a t th e wobbling bo ttom lips and wide eyes , she turned towa rds the doo r. Sma ll a nd passive, th ey had h esitatingly ga th ered to join the ra nks of the educated.
Th e girl s' unwa verying gaze co ntinued to filt e r t h ro ugh th e teac h e r's assura nce . Deprived of resoluti o n by thi s une xpected e ntra nce, th e teac her hes ita ted a mome nt and surveyed h e r newest charge . Th ere we re, h oweve r, no ribbo ns restraining this girl 's h a ir. This was a pity, th e teac h e r noted . Thin a nd straight , it see m ed moulded to her head in it s close -cropped sho rtness , with a fringe revealing fin e, th ough quite da rk, brows. H e r eyebrows we re high a nd na rrow , giving a n impress io n of wide eyes. Any no tion thi s gave of inqui sitive ness, h oweve r, wa s dispelled by the mirro r-like grey of the eyes . Slightly a lmo nd-sha ped , th ey we re e nclosed by sho rt , da rk lashes . He r nose was sm a ll a nd snub a nd h e r lips we re thin a nd pa le, set in a stra ight line, giving no sign of t,earful weakness .
