The fir st of two ski-trips to Mt. Baw Baw. Our wo rthy reporters were on board the bus. blearyeyed , at 6.1 5. We all had an enjoyab le day on the mountain. The highlight of our day was watch in g Mr. Byrnes' skiing ski ll s fail (on ly occasiona ll y o f course)! ! RELIGIOUS EDUCATION ACTIVITIES The religious education programme in the College is based on the guidelines published by the Archdiocese of Melbourne.

The doctrinal programme is integra ted into the Church's liturgical year and major feasts are both studied and celebrated.

Easter is always a highlight and at the various form levels special activities were undertaken - for example Form I making a feature of the pascha l candle and together renewing their baptismal promises, Form II preparing and celebrating a Passover Meal, other Forms made detailed study of the Easter ceremonies o n the Stations of the Cross, always in an attempt to seek their significance for us in our life today.

The main thrust for 1978 has been in the H.S.C. area where the year bega n with a night for parents and girls at which the total H.S.C. programme was explained.

At another meeting early in Term ll parents shared in further explanation of the programme especially of the marriage study being undertaken throughout second term.

Three married couples shared ideas and experiences over a period of 14 weeks thi s provided an invaluable opportunity for discussion and the development of attitudes, and we acknowledge our gratitude and indebtedness to these generous people - Leonie and John Morris, Jenny and John Youngberry, Marie and Brendan Eames. Term HI saw another innovati on in the H.S.C. area - the abandoning of the

separate lesso ns in favour of two full days devoted to more intense study and reflection . Father Brian Johnstone CSSR and Sister Marga ret Beirne RSC and the R.E. staff at the College helped make these days enriching and profitable.

Jn other classes of the College, R. E. teachers have been striving to hand o n the faith and we value their dedication and example. Many have combined the formal lessons with experiences for the girls in " helping" si tuatio ns such as visits to the Judge Boo k Community Welfare Village, Meals on Wheels, Churinga, Caritas Christi Fete, participation in the Poor Man's Mass and the Forty H o ur Famine, support of an Asian child, contributions to Catholic Mi ssion activities being some of the highlights.

We have attempted to provide opportunity for all girls to share in the liturgy both in class and on a voluntary basis.

C lasses have prepared and participated in class Masses and in the Rite of Penance.

Each week there has been a lunchtime Mass or Rosary at which attendance is voluntary. During Lent we all shared in a reconciliation liturgy at which we were able to receive the Sacrament.

For all these sharings and celebrations we sincerely thank our chaplains - Fathers Baker, Pascoe, Maxwell, McCann and Casamento a nd , prior to their transfer to other parishes, Fathers Jenkins, McCormack and Grenville.

A TRIBUTE

THE PASSOVER MEAL

All girls and staff at Catholic Ladies' College wish to express their gratitude to Fr. D. Jenkins and Fr. B. McCormack for their devoted service to the College over many years. They have made themselves available for so many of our schoo l functions, and activities, they have been consistently faithful to offering Mass with the girls each week and, above all, they have been fine examples of dedicated pri esthood.

For all this we are very grateful.

We wish them both well in their new parishes: Fr. Jenkins at Elwood, and Fr. McCormack at Kyneton .

The Passover is the Jewish festival of freedom . ]t is the celebratio n of the Exodus fro m Egypt.

At Easter, Room 4 celebrated this festival , and we grew to know its true meaning by conducting o ur own Passover Meal.

The meal consisted of lamb, lettuce, egg, ora nge juice and unleavened bread. Each piece of food was sy mboli c.

The feast is so metimes called "The Feast of the Unleavened Bread " , because the J ews had to break unleavened bread hastily before their departure fro m Egypt.

During the ceremony, hymns were sung and there were severa l readings.

SOCIAL AWARENESS ACTIVITIES Tt was great to feel the warmth that the people at Judge Book displayed to us.

They really appreciated someone to talk to and it showed them that young people really do care. It helped to bridge the generation gap when they told us of their experiences in life.

We were nervous at first but soon settled down. A lady showed us the Wheel-chair Ward, the kitchen and the Craft Room . At the end of our visit we were very thankful and were looking forward to coming back again.

FREEDOM FROM HUNGER CAMPAIGN 1977 Mr. Butt, State Director of the Freedom from Hunger Campaign, presented Catholic Ladies' College with a set of encyclopaedias. This set was donated by Encyclopaedia Britannica to the Campaign to be awarded to the Victorian school that made the most outstanding contribution during I 977 to the appeal. CARIT AS CHRISTI FETE Early this year a grand effort was made

by C.L.C. to help those who care for the terminally ill. A Cake Day was held at the school which realised $400. In addition, the Easter Egg Raffle run by the S.R .C. brought in $I 50.

POOR MAN'S MASS The Annual Poor Man's Mass on the Feast of the Sacred Heart was held this year and, as usual, there was a very generous response in both clothes and food. All the goods collected were given to the St. Vincent de Paul Society to be used for needy families and for the people at Ozanam House.

JUDGE BOOK [ enjoy going to Judge Boo k. The old people are so friendly and enjoy our company. Each time we visit they ask us to stay longer. When we are with them it seems as if we have known them for years.

Diane de Pellegrin The old people at Judge Book love to have visitors so Room 7 have been visiting them each Friday of 3rd Term. They love talking to us and telling us about their early life. We listen with interest and tell them about ourselves. We then make our way to the Craft Room where we see many things being made such as bath mats.

CHRISTMAS HELP AT CHURINGA Following is the text of a talk given by Geraldine Sauvarin at one of our early assemblies this year.

"Churinga is a centre in Greensborough where a holiday relief programme was arranged for the parents of mentally and physically handicapped children. This allows the parents and families of particularly difficult children to have a well-earned rest.

Our primary duties involved the general loo king after of o ur assigned child. Thi s included feeding. clo thing, entertaining and changing if necessa ry. Tf any difficulties arose trained staff were available to assist. • Very soo n, many of the children developed a warm affection to which we responded.

A few girls who preferred not to loo k after a child , volunteered to carry o ut the general domestic duties invo lved in running a centre of this size.

A se parate cottage was available for those o f us who decided to live in. The ma jo rity of us did. After bedding the c hildren at night we had complete freedom to swim, pl ay poo l, have B.B.Q's, watch T.V .. o r socialize with the o ther vo lunteers. Very good food was supplied in a bundance and if a nyo ne wi shed to go o ut, permission was easily gained.

A unanimo us o pini o n after o ur stay was that it was a wo rthwhile ex pe rience. We ca me to appreciate the parents' devo ti o n to th e children , a few of who m wo uld req uire 24 ho ur a da y attention, and we were rewarded by the gratitude of the parents.

T he pro ject is concerned with providing so me relief and a chance of a week's ho liday away, for those parents who have a ha ndica pped child - not in an instituti o n but at ho me, 24 ho urs a d ay.

The exhibition, entitled Art in Education, is meant to show parents, teachers and students what is ha ppening in the schoo ls today, a nd to focus attention on so me of the changes taking place in the Arts. 1t was viewed in Adelaide by international and interstate delegates to the Congress, and has si nce been ta ke n to Perth and Sydney. It is to return to Melbourne in early December, when it may be seen at the Toorak State College.

MUSIC On the day before the long-awaited holidays, Form JI L made another appearance, this time in the new Judge Book hall. From the applause we heard, at all three performances, it seemed as though people enjoyed our musical.

Catherine Dopheide This letter from the Judge Book Community Centre was received soon after: Dear Sister, The folk who attended "Lightshine" in Metzner Hall have asked me to pass on to you, the teacher and the students of Form Ill, their appreciation of the splendid presentation. I tried to express our thanks after the performance, but we want the girls to know that their efforts were greatly valued.

The morning was one which will not readily be forgotten.

ELTHAM FESTIVAL Schools in the Diamond Valley District took part in the Eltham Community Festival.

Hems such as dancing, verse speaking, choirs, drama and creative movements all contributed to an atmosphere of excitement and entertainment. It proved to be a rewarding experience as all the schools united to perform the concerts. This shows that we all have, not only school spirit, but a feeling of community. Room 9 presented an aboriginal poem "Community Rain Song" which, to much of the audience, was quite humorous.

Eight of the girls gave an aboriginal dance while the remainder of the class sat in a circle, chanting the song and verse. Much to our amusement, the skies opened and "rain came down".

Form HI also sang selections from " Li~ht­ shine" and other two-part songs on their day.

In all, C.L.C. participated in four of the five sessions of the Festival. Form I did a charming folk dance, Form Tl Special Choir sang and at the evening session the Specia l Choir performed quite beautifully.

DANDENONG FESTIVAL A Special Choir group took part in this year's Dandenong Choral Festival. They sang: The Little Ships of Arcady (Head) Alleluia (Mozart).

The group was highly commended. Som ~ of the adjudicator's comments were "some excellent phrasing'', "very musical reading'', "the parts were beautifully balanced and some superb tonal quality emerged".

At the end of Term I, the Form II girls presented a choral concert to their parents.

Each of the three groups of Form U sang a hymn, a round and a part song. In addition, the Form JI Special Choir sang a few other charming numbers. Everyone enjoyed this afternoon's entertainment. The girls were to be congratulated for both their singing and behaviour. Particular congratulations are due to Mrs. Spain who, in such a limited time, was able to produce so many items of such fine quality.

"LI G HTSHIN E" Tuesday, 22nd August, was the big day.

After days, weeks, months of practising, Form III finally put on the musical "Lightshine". Admittedly, the day before, we had put it on for the school, a much more critical audience, but that was only a rehearsal.

On Tuesday, a good crowd of mothers, grandmothers and younger brothers and sisters turned up to hear the modernised version of the beatitudes.

DEBATING At the end of March, Salesian College, Chadstone challenged C.L.C. to Debates at the Forms III, lV, V and VC levels.

Forms Ill and V, debating on the topics, 'A ustralia should accept more Refugees' and 'Australian Politicians give their country value' won their rounds. Forms IV and VI were defeated.

Later Parade, Bundoora, challenged C.L.C. [n these debates C.L.C. won all four sections at Forms HI, IV, V, VI levels.

PUBLIC SPEAl\.ING YOUTH OF THE YEAR PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION Jn March Jenny Lalor won the Club Final for the Greensborough Section which was held at Bulleen in March this year.

Here she was competing against students from nine other high schools.

In the State Final, Jenny was defeated by the N .S. W. representative. H owever, she was very highly commended by th e Judges and a fine representatives of C.L.C. She deserves congratulations for her performance.

JANE EYRE An exce llent performa nce of "Jane Eyre" was staged at the end of seco nd term . Lt was played to crowded ho uses on three nights. The stage sets, the costumes, the music were beautifully chosen for the period. However, above a ll , the act ing of all members of th e cast was splendid.

Jenny Lalor as Jane Eyre, and Paul Dawso n as Mr. Rochester were o utsta nding. Joanne Hickey as Mrs. Fairfax, Kerry Hyde as Mrs. Rochester a nd Sandra Smith as Lady Ingram deserve mention for thei r ability to sustain quite difficult parts.

The ot her members of th e cast fro m C.L.C. were Catherine Grant, Kathryn Mullany. Caroly n Buckley. Jane Co no le, Catriona E lder, Clare Purce ll , Catherine Callahan, Kaia de Burgh , Mi chell e Ca llinan.

These girls, together with the dancers, Toni Lalor, Deborah Lee, Mo nica Zorzi, J ennifer Longton, Maureen Bourke, Angela Pavone and Mary Dawson made a m ~ m o r­ able entertainment for those ma ny parents and girls who had the good fortun~ to attend.

There were many others who sho uld be co ngratulated on this great perform a nce the stage staff, the hairdressers, a nd make-up experts, Mr. Phillip Byrnes who was the organist and Miss Johanna Selleck, the flautist, Mr. Luigi Rai o li for the sets, Marita Byrnes for the o il paintings, and Mr. Chris Byrnes for the lighting.

The Executive and Technical Director was Mr. Kevin Byrnes who. with hi s usual enthusia sm and expertise, supported the cast and gave invaluable assistance in so many ways. To him, too, we are indebted for the attractive programme for " Jane Eyre".

Mrs. Margaret Spain trained the charming singing group and Miss Tuppy Dow ns and Mi ss Renee Martini prepared the elegant ballroom dance seg ment.

Above all, menti on mu st be made of Mrs. Co nnie Casey, the producer-directo r of "Jane Eyre". We are used to expecting a fine performance in any of the plays or act ivities Mrs. Casey is asscciated with. We were certainly not disappoi nted this year with the quality of the whole production.

Mrs. Casey's thoroughn ess and attention to detail , her painsta king preparation of the cast and above a II her fl a ir for stage direction are truly o utstanding. The girls a re very fortunate to have her as their teacher of Speech a nd Drama.

"JANE EYRE" The tension is building. Mrs. Casey suddenly sho uts, " Only 15 minutes to go, hurry up the make-up." We all obey.

Frantically we pull on our costumes and cry in dismay as we di scover an essential button is mi ss ing. We grab a safety pin and hope it ho ld s for the night. We take a peek in the crack of the curtain. When we see all th e peop le, our hearts give an uncontrollable beat. After kisses of "good-luck" are spread around, it's suddenly too late to be nervous.

The play is commencing and we have to be quiet or else!

As the first scene is in progress the rest of the cast huddles in the boys' changing room (the boys have already changed), and twiddle our fingers and wonder about all the the things that co uld go wrong. Mrs. Casey flitters around back stage giving encouraging pats but loo king as if she is the one tha t need s the encouraging.

Suddenly we're on and thinking of doing not hing else except what the a udience has paid for.

It's over very quickly and the sigh of relief is loud and long. The play is over and kisses of co ngratulations are spreading like wildfire. The costume is hurled off o ur bod ies (much to the dismay of Mrs. Casey) and thrown o n the hanger. Cotton wool is hurriedly removing the muck fro m o ur faces and before we know it, we're on o ur way ho me and in bed . We spend the night dreaming about the mi stakes and successes and, most of all, the enjoyment of the night.

SPORTS HOUSE REPORTS AIKENHEAD

1978 proved to be a very successful year for the Aikenhead team with a victory in the Swimming Sports and the Netball. We were not so fortunate in the Athletics and the Tennis, but the girls' performance was creditable a nd their enthusiasm was always evident. It was especially encouraging to see so many girls participating in the Aikenhead activities. Fortunately my job as captai n was made easier when girls were willing to enter events rather than backing out of them or not attending the sports days at all.

Aikenhead's Vice-Captain, Joanne Yan Nugteren, deserves a special "thanks" for her support and help in organisation throughout the year, also the middle and junior school captains, Anita Caddy and Michelle Silvagni.

Finally my thanks go to all the Aikenhead girls for a fine performance in 1978, and I wish you the same success in 1979 as we have had this year.

The cheer squad s this year helped create an intense and colourful atmosphere at the Swimming and Athletics Sports. Aikenhead 's efforts were awarded the most decorative and I thank the girls concerned in securing those extra points, especially Diane R owe, Monica Zorzi and Maureen Bourke.

Lisa Browne effort because Loyo la lacks strong swimmers. Caro lyn Ross, Gabrielle Brennan, Kelly Beer and Michelle Booth are girls who gave me much support.

The junior girls are always enthusiastic in house sporting events, and I only hope that they continue to give their support as they progress through the school. Middle school girls need to contribute a lot more to their House. When they are in H.S.C. they will realise what a task it is trying to fill places in events from that part of the school. Sport in the school would be a lot more enjoyable if everyone was more enthusiastic.

Overall, Loyola has had quite a successful year, but this is due to the support of a few people who always help. I have already mentioned some, but I would also like to thank Cathy Walker, my ViceCaptain, Janine McHugh and again Jane Conole who were always there if I needed their help.

Congratulations to the other Captains, Lisa, Helen and Amanda, and many thanks to Mrs. Goodwin and Mrs. Cross who always supported us. For the future, I wish Loyola luck!

This year, Loyola seems to have come up in the world . The highlight of the sporting year was when Loyola won the Athletics Sports. Kathy and Anne McDermott and Jane Conole performed brilliantly for us on the day. Thanks very much, girls.

Although l had some difficulty in trying to get a squad, all the girls joined together on the day and helped in some way.

Tennis has also continued to be one of Loyola's strengths due to the efforts of the Casey sisters and Bernadette Dillon.

Thanks are due to Janine Casey who did so much organising in that area.

The inter-schoo l tennis held at Genazzano was a lso quite successful with the undefeated Fourth Form team winning their sectio n. The Fo rm 111 and Senior section teams, though not being ab le to defeat their to ugh oppositi on, both perfo rmed well.

It is good to see so much enthusiasm in tennis at C.L.C. Tt see ms that C.L.C. will have a very successful future in tenni s with so many good players in the junior fo rms.

TABLE TENNIS With the advent of seco nd term ca me the enthusiastic rush to begin the C. L C. Ta ble Tennis Championships. After considerable organisation, the cha mpi o nship got under way, and severa l weeks into third term we discovered two winners: Catherine Miller representing the Juni ors and Therese Barwick, the Seniors. The efforts and interest of my vice-captain , M a ry H ayes, a nd the advice of Mr. Downi e helped me greatly in my effo rts to round the girls up each lunchtime. The success at Genazzano reflects the interest a nd achievements ta ble tenni s has reached in the school, for in these co mpetitio ns we wo n the Form HI, Form IV, Forms V and Vf Sections. Many thanks a re due to Therese Ba rwick for working so ha rd to make these teams so successful.

C.L.C. was represented in the C.S.S.N .A. by two tea ms. The Form H team certainly displayed a commendable team performance during these ten weeks by reaching the Grand F ina l. This was a truly exciting match, but in a close fini sh they were defeated by two goals. A Form V and VI tea m a lso represented C.L.C. in this co mpetitio n, however, they were not as successful as they had hoped , due to the fact that they were placed in a wrong grading.

Ma ny girls deserve to be praised for their enthu siasm a nd help throughout the yea r, especially Sonia Costa and Janine McHugh who devoted much of their lunch-times

THE INTER-SCHOOL SWIMMING SPORTS

The final scores were: Genazzano 269, Siena 246, C.L.C. 188, Killester 149 and Santa Maria 129. Maybe with more training, C.L.C. will reach the top!

Although the annual School Swimming Sports were over, some of us could not relax because we still had the InterSchool Swimming Sports ahead of us.

These were held at the Olympic Stadium on Tuesday, 14th February. C.L.C. was represented by an enthusiastic group of girls from all forms . Each year this swimming team becomes larger and so does the cheer squad as the school spirit increases.

ATHLETICS Catholic Ladies' College House Athletic Sports were held at Willinda Park, Montmorency on 13th April. This day proved to be a major success for those competing in the track and field events. A total of twenty-one records were broken. The introduction of a 800 metre walk in the programme drew much attention from spectators, as did the invitation inter-school events.

All girls performed well in the events in which they were participating. The team was well supported by a strong cheer squad which consisted of students, parents and teachers. A few of C.L.C.'s previous records were broken by swimmers from other schools but a few of our representatives made up for these records lost and broke a few more.

Due to the success of last year's invitation to other Schools to compete in the I 00 metre and 4 x I 00 metre relay events, the invitations were extended this year.

enabled us to win the Open relay, Open I00 metres and the Under 16 100 metres.

to the valuable assistance of Australia's Commonwealth Gold Medallist - Denise Robertson-Boyd , we regained fitness and competed over the weekend . Karen Smith made her way to the final of the 400 metres and finished fifth. The relay team finished fourth and the rest of the squad gave creditable performances considering the time of the year.

Once again we saw some fine performances from the girls representing their School and Houses on this day, especially those of Jackie Frolley, Karen Smith. Lisa Wood and Kathy McDermott. Incidentally, the absence of two of CL.C's finest athletes Lisa and Kathy has been noticed on the athletic track since their dep:u ture from the school earlier this year.

Obviously the CL.C. girls have great potential and ability on the athletics field.

If the same competition is available in future years we should see many more records falling and hopefully the same interest in athletics as was evident this year.

Loyola deservedly won the day with a total of 574 points to Marita with 525 , Aikenhead 495 and Vincentia 409.

On the 2nd April CL.C were invited to compete at St. Columba's House Sports at Aberfeldie Park, Essendon. The Open 4 x I 00 metre relay team secured a trophy the School has not won since 1963 and Lisa Wood won the Under 16 I00 metres.

Lisa Browne St. Columba's Sports were held at the end of March . As usual C.L.C. participated but this year we won the coveted Rosebowl for the Inter-School Senior Relay Event. C.L.C also won the Under 16 Sprint in record time - Lisa Wood was the winner. Jn addition C.L.C gained two seconds and was third in another two events.

Term llf found the School Athletic Squad struggling to regain fitness after a lengthy, inactive winter. The aim was to participate in the Victorian School Girl Championships held at Olympic Park on 7th October and the 8th October. Thanks

FORM III EXCURSION TO PARLIAMENT HOUSE After only a few weeks back at school , following the May holidays, Mrs. Dixon and Mrs. Wilkinson accompanied the Form HI girls on an interesting excursion to Parliament House, Melbourne. We were given a guided tour of the historic old building and a general outline of the proceedings and the basic activities of the Victorian Parliament. All were fascinated by the beautiful rooms which had recently been renovated and repaired , and we were quite surprised to find out what goes on in Parliament. Everyone was eventually rounded up and we reluctantly climbed back aboard the bus after a most enjoyable time.

When we arrived at the Magistrate's Court at 9.00 a.m. on schedule, we went straight into the City Court where Mr. Baker-Smith gave us a talk on what we were going to see and hear, such as the placement of various court officials and their duties, At 9.30 a few men came to the court room to be charged with being drunk in a public place. This was followed by an unguided tour of the various court-rooms.

We walked around until 10.00 a.m. then took our seats in the City Court once more. This time the cases were for more serious offenders and the hearings were more detailed . At 11.00 a.m. we separated into two groups and one group went to the 8th Court-room and walked in on an inquest on the victim of a car and motor cycle collision. The other group went to Court-room 3.

FORM III EXCURSION TO HANGING ROCK As a follow up to the novel "Picnic at Hanging Rock" the girls of Form III went on an excursion to that place of intrigue and mystery. Dressed in the clothes of that particular era, the girls retraced the shattering events which occurred on St. Valen-

This excursion was a very interesting experience and the procedures of a court room became clearer in our minds.

T he atmos phere was contagio us a nd a lread y we had been ca ptured by the mo neyhungry side-show owners. Winning to kens a nd pri zes, a nd not winning the large cudd ly tedd y- bea rs tha t stay high o n the shelves, read y fo r those who could score the correct number, was a ll pa rt of the fun .

Wa lking th ro ugh the G o vernment Pav ilio n was a n interesting ex perience fo r me. Di splays a nd ex hibits had o bvio usly been ca reful pla nned to provid e enjoy ment fo r a ll o n-loo kers. T he Pentrid ge Pri so n section was one that a ppea led to me. Tt ga ve me a glimpse of wha t co nditions a nd li fe in pri son a re rea lly like - not as bad as T imagined , bu t still, not very pl easa nt. T he 'Life Be Tn It' di splay was a nother whi ch pro vid ed enjoyment fo r a ll ages . J was rea ll y impressed by the A rt s a nd Crafts secti on, especia lly the ca ke decora ting: the d elicate work on the cakes a nd the origina l designs seemed to be a n a tt racti o n to a ll. Sheep were impo rtant in the ea rly days of Australia 's history, fo r food, and a li ttle la ter, for the export potential of th eir woo l.

The sheep has been do mesticated for 11 ,000 years.

A highlight fo r so me girls a t th e sheep show was that they met a nd ta lked with the Prime Mini ster and hi s wife, who are a lways interested in the sheep show as they breed sheep of their own.

We learned of the many properties of natural woo l, such as that it conserves energy, absorbs moisture, is comfortable to wea r, a good insulator a nd repel s rain .

Woo l also has proved to have health properties in that experiments have shown that woo llen socks worn in a n ice-field wo uld ma ke your blood-flow 2~ times as great as if you were wearing socks made of sy ntheti c materia ls. Similar experiments with underwea r have shown tha t woo l-und erwea r retains body -warmth a lmost half as well aga in as sy ntheti c underwea r. Idea l clo thing sho uld reta in its physica l properties a nd characteri sti cs unaffected by changes in climate or variations in the bod y. It sho uld give co mfo rt a nd pro mo te good hea lth . out for Coober Pedy. Here we stayed in a "dugout" specially supplied for campers.

We were shown around the town, and visited one of the more exclusive underground homes and a church. Later we went fossicking for opals, all hoping to strike it rich. Next morning after a sleep-in we set out in the direction of Victory Downs.

Here we met a group of American Exchange students and we spent some of the night entertaining ourselves in a recreation hall which was supplied with a juke box .

Next day our destination was Ayers Rock. We arrived there before lunch but as the weather report for the following day was not promising, we decided to climb the Rock that afternoon. The majority managed to reach the top and sign the book. We later visited Cathedral Cave where we were thought to be a choir when we performed a fully harmonised rendition of "The Crimond". The night was spent around the campfire socialising with various school groups which were also visiting Ayers Rock. We were pleased to be able to meet another Victorian school - Geelong West Tech.

After visiting the Olgas the next day we slept off the exhaustion in the bus while we travelled across to Ebenezer Station .

Here we pulled the Geelong West bus out of the mud. Our final destination before returning home was Alice Springs. Here we stayed at Heavitree Gap Caravan Park where the facilities were a marked improvement. We visited Simpson's Gap, Stanley Chasm and Anzac Hill. We wandered through the township of Alice Springs in the afternoon and at night we held a concert. All enjoyed Mrs. Dixon's and Mrs. Hofmann's recital of the humorous limericks which they had created along the way.

Our last morning was spent riding camels.

After putting down our tents for the last time and closing suitcases, we visited Emily Gap camel farm. Everyone had had such a tremendous time that it was natural we were sad to say good-bye to Central Australia. We were driven to Alice Springs airport and after final farewells to Glen and Max we boarded a homeward bound 727 jet.

Thanks are due to Glen for her magnificent meals, to Max for his expertise in driving the coach and to Mrs. Dixon and Mrs. Hofmann who were a load of laughs.

AN INTERESTING DAY AT THE MUSEUM During first term Room 4 studied the Australian Aborigines. We found this a very interesting subject and as a follow-up from this, Miss Rai (our General Studies teacher) took us on a visit to the Mu seum.

Whilst half of the Room 4 girls looked through the Museum, the other half were given a lecture. This was very intere-,ting with slides and lots of interesting facts; we also saw many of the Aboriginal handcrafts. After both groups had been through we walked to a small park in the city for lunch. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Museum and I think we gained a wider knowledge of the Aborigines.

CENTRAL AUSTRALIAN CAMP After final instructions from Sr. Maureen and the A.AT. co-ordinator, we left from the school grounds. Our destination was Alice Springs. The monotony of the long journey was broken by the occasional informative comments from our driver Max and our cook, Glen, and our singing and dancing up and down the aisles.

Our first stop was Murray Bridge.

Luckily we had lilos that floated on the water which leaked into our leak-proof tents during the night. Though clothes and bedding were drenched, our enthusiasm wasn't and we continued along our merry way. We travelled through Adelaide, stopping to check out the scene there, and then on to Port Augusta where we spent a more comfortable night.

Our journey the next day was rather long. We stopped at Pimba and briefly explored Spud Murphy's roadhouse, a desolate, dilapidated place. Our night stop was at Kingoonya , a small township between Port Augusta and Coober Pedy. There we had our first campfire, which we shared with a few locals, some aborigines and some railway employees. Thanks are due to Mrs. Hofmann , a courageous woman who removed one of the locals from one of our tents. A sleepless night was spent by all. at Kingoonya, the town that was dead before we arrived and came alive whilst we were there.

SOCIAL FUNCTIONS 1978 DEBUT

T he night itself had a lmost a drea m-like qua lity, as, after professiona l photogra ph s in t he foye r of the Roya le Ba ll roo m, we presented o urselves without th e slightest hitch in procedure. All curtsies, d es pite previous wo rr ies, were successful , a nd the dedicatio n with whi ch o ur pa rtners und erwent the ord ea l was both moving a nd gra tifying.

The presenta tio n d a nce itself, which immed ia tely fo llowed , was a credi t to o ur teachers, and on the conclusion of that, we were free to relax a nd enjoy the rema ind er of the ni ght.

As po pul a r as ever, this years's debut saw 58 sixth fo rmers a nd thei r pa rtners enthu siasti ca lly a ttending t he five ba ll roo m da nci ng lessons a nd o ne fi na l practi ce before T H E night, o n Wednesd ay, May 3 1.

We girls had no d o ubts a bo ut the enjoyment of wea ring the req uired full-length white gown, d a nci ng shoes a nd lo ng white gloves, a ltho ugh we were glad of the fi na l practice a t the R oya le Ba ll roo m to test o ur a bility to ma nage the court curtsy!

T hi s yea r was different in tha t pa rtners were not dressed in the co nventiona l black d inner suits which have prev io usly been the no rm . Anyone who had the slightest d o ubts concerning the effect of the d ove grey suits our escorts wore, had them d ispelled o n the night, fo r, a pa rt fro m bei ng easily di stinguisha ble fro m th e other men a t the ba ll , they loo ked a bsolutely gorgeo us.

Red bow ties a nd bu tto n ho les co mplemented the pos ies we held , a nd the littl e white glo ves added the fi ni shing touch.

Other ma le guests made much of d a ncing with a d ebuta nte in the progress ives, a nd we were rea ll y mad e to fee l specia l on this o ur 'once only' night.

Everyo ne soo n filled up on the hamburgers, cakes and pancakes provided by the Mothers' Auxiliary and then we went off to enjoy rides, trampolines, mo tor cycling rides, wheels, pony rides provided by the Fathers' Auxiliary. lt was a most enjoyable day. Many thanks to all those who helped to make it possi ble.

The festivities continued well into the small ho urs, with a party later at Teresa Fogarty's (needless to say we did not attend sc hoo l on the following day!) .

What can we say concerning o ur feelings on thi s important night? Thanks must go to Imelda and Ted Emmett, who, in the space of six weeks, had us thoroughly familiar with both the presentation and accompanying dance. Al so to Maria Graham , president of The Old Collegians' Association, who coped so well with the headache of the tickets. Whatever socia l experience we had previo usly had , thi s was a night to remember. The number of us who made our debut testify to its enduring popularity, a nd suggests that it will be as big an event for next year's sixth formers as it was thi s year for us.

SOCIAL OF THE YEAR Anyone who had the slightest doubts that the co llege ha ll could beco me a superb venue for a socia l certainly had them di spelled on Mo nday evening, August 14th.

The transfo rmatio n from springboa rd s to strobes was no thing short of miraculo us, and full cred it must go to social committee leaders, Kelly Rya n and Cathie Leigh, and to Mr. C hri s Byrnes for his dedication and ingenuity with the much-admired lighting effects. The efforts of Mrs. Ryan and Mr. Daly with the curtain of si lver streamers which partitioned the hall were also greatly appreciated. The who le effect was a striking and varied blend of light and shadow ; a great atmosphere for the rock and disco which were played .

Popular band " Rock Steady" kept the rhythm going, and were ever-obliging about meeting the many requests with which they were inundated . Students from numerous neighbouring ma le colleges graced us with their presence, as well as a group of parents who supplied us with the necessary number of bouncers and drink-pourers. Many thanks also to Mr. Steinfort for arranging so talented a band for us, and to Mr. McArthur for printing the impressive black and si lver invitations.

Needless to say, the fifth-formers who resisted the temptation (?) to stay home and study for exams on the following day were glad they came. We have heard nothing but (well-deserved) compliments of the night ever since. The highlight was undoubtedly the rendition of the college song, which was treated to a slightly different accompaniment fro m the schoo l piano. Thanks to Sister Maureen and Sister Felicia for authorizing a social which was voted unanimously a success.

BALLROOM DANCING On Monday nights, first term, there was bustling activity in the washrooms. Girls were hurriedly making last minute adjustments to their persons, the forbidden touch of mascara (only ventured by so me) and all were busy combing their hair. After dismissal, an impatient drive through the streets of Greensborough brought the excited girls to Parade for the Ballroo m Dancing classes. Those who were lucky enough found themse lves in the arms of a tall , dark and hand some stranger. Due to the over-enthusiasm of the girls they outnumbered the male counterparts, so so me were obliged to remain seated for the first dance. After the first week those who wore sa ndals found themselves with bruised toes, and reso lved to wear shoes for the remainder of the classes.

At the end of the ten weeks some were co mpetent in waltzing, quickstep and some of the other old time dances. The socia l held on the I st July was a fine end to the lessons. Many friendships had been made and the classes would not be soon forgotten.

Vivienne Dillon and Mary Kaine WALKATHON Everyone arrived early at C.L.C. for the Walkathon to the house which the de Pellegrins kindly lent to the schoo l for the day.

There we received name-tags and got into groups, and after a small delay we sta rted with o ur first obstacle - hilly Diamo nd Street. A group of girls decided to be original and wore roller-skates (we wo nder how they got up the hill). Nearing the end of our exhausting jo urney we were given 37

H.S.C. ACTIVITIES Considering the pressure a ppli ed during a n H .S.C. year, the "Class of 78" see med to find time to engage in many other social activities, both educational and pleasurable. The year commenced with a meeting for students, parents and staff to discuss the plan of study and future career prospects among other things . Then being Fo rm Vis it was important to us that the new students, the Form ls, were not overawed by the experience of coming to a new and completely different sc hoo l environment. We were therefore induced to answer letters they wrote to us and to meet and encourage them . (As a bonus they were a llowed to dine with us o ne lunch-time in the hall.)

During the May ho lidays, those wanting to, spent a memorable ten days in Central Australia, camping en route. Many thanks to Mrs. Hofmann and Mrs. Dixon. No soo ner had we returned than the Debut was being discussed. The debut was one of the highlights of the year and after so me anxiety and much nervousness we found the night a wonderful success. Jn July we bade a tearful farewell to two of our comrades, Kathy and Debbie, who had won American Field Scholarships and were off to explore the States.

In August, thanks to the effort of all willing volunteers, the senior social was held , and all had a terrific night. Late in August, mainly due to the work of Sue McClements, the Talent Quest, which has almost become an annual event, was held. Congratulations to all entrants who provided an entertaining lunch-time for all.

The staff luncheon late second term was, as expected, a roaring success. One could be excused for thinking certain persons had not eaten in weeks in preparation for this banquet. Right throughout second term four couples from Marriage Encounter devoted their Tuesdays to discussion sessions from which, no doubt, everyone benefited in some way. Many thanks are extended to those couples and to Sr. Dorothy for her invaluable organisation. Third term there were no R.E. classes but two whole days set aside for this purpose - all those who participated found them enlightening and helpful.

At different times of the year we were given the opportunity to debate with other schools. The lack of support was somewhat disheartening but with more encouragement the debates could be a very worth

while experience.

LECTURES ON CAREERS FOR H.S.C. On Tuesday evening February 21st. a meeting of H.S.C. students and their parents was held at the School Hall. Parents were able to speak to the teachers and much valuable ca reer information was given by Anne-Maree O'Co nnor from the Ca reers Department of Melbourne University.

On Mo nd ay July 3rd Dr. John McLean, a member of the Biology Standing Committee of V.U.S.E. B. , spoke to the Form Vf Bio logy students and gave many helpful comments o n how to approach the final examination in thi s subject.

On Tuesday 15th August four members of staff of La Trobe University visited the school to inform Form VI students of the opportunities available to them at the University.

TALENT QUEST The Talent Quest, which was held at lunch-time on the 23rd August, revealed many unusual and interesting talents that would otherwise have been hidden. This event proved to be most interesting for the spectators as well as the performers.

Because of the wide range of talent, several prizes were awarded. The "Encouragement Award" went to Jeanette Bredenoord for her musical genius at the piano. A group of Form VJs won the " Most Original Award" for their interpretation of the highly intellectual televi sion programme "Batman". The two girls who were voted as having the "Most Potential" were two sisters - Tania and Michelle Fitzmaurice. They performed a dance to the music of "Rhythms of Life". Room 8A together with Mrs. Dixon and Mrs. Hofmann imitated some of the staff to perfection . The highlight of this act was Jenny Longton's portrayal of Sr. Maureen ; however, Mrs. Dixon and Mrs. Hofmann dressed up as some students, also brought many laughs. They received a special "Discouragement Award" for their parts.

Thanks are due to the judges for attempting the difficult task of judging. I'm sure this Talent Quest will be remembered and laughed about for quite a while to come!

LUNCH-TIME CONCERTS A series of concerts was orga nised for lunch-times during Term 1 L by Mrs. Barry.

These concerts were designed to introduce to the girls some of the finest music and musicians a vailable. There was no attempt to pand er to second-rate tastes. ln the recitals there were peo pl e like Leslie Miers, Paul Tod-Williams, Huw Jones, John Caddy, Philip Orgille, Barry McKim , Vernon Hill and Ted Ba rry who not o nly performed attractive items, but introduced the girls to the beauties and ranges of the intruments th ey played , a nd to the hi story of mu sica l co mpositio n fo r their ow n instruments.

Each concert had its own particula r charm a nd a lways was enjoyed by the big groups of girls who ca me. Thanks are du e to Mrs. Ba rry for both her initiative a nd her hard wo rk in organi sing the series.

GUEST SPEAKER During the first term, the Form Five Po litics class was fortunate eno ugh to have a guest spea ker ta lking o n a controversial to pi c, which we had just studied in class.

SUPER SINGING CIRCUS On the 7th August, F orms T, JI a nd I Lf were very privileged to hear th e ha rmoni ous vo ices in the " Super Singing Circus". This "circus" was in the fo rm of a short musica l.

have to learn more at home out of their notes or text books. l don't know if it is an advantage or disadvantage, but in Germany we seem to have more time to read or play sports or do anything we want to. With our system in Germany, if we work hard in class we don't have to work so much at home, so our discipline is better. Another difference is that I think we have more choice of subjects. For instance we can do languages and all three science subjects.

"It is very good that your students can play netball , tennis or table tennis during their sports lesson. But I think one sport lesson per week is not enough, especially as in Australia there is not enough time after school. We have two period of sport per week and also have the time to do more after school if we want to. l think one advantage of your school is that because the students spend more time together at school they know each other better and are closer to each other than we are in our schools.

"When I think of all the advantages and disadvantages of both school systems I cannot really say whether T would like to go to school in Australia or not. l think school would be easier for me in Australia, apart from the language difficulty, because in Germany we are further ahead with our knowledge. Thank you very much for everything you did for me and please give my kindest regards to everyone at school, especially the girls from Form V, because they really made me feel welcome and happy, and to all the teachers who had to cope with me and to the Sisters in the Convent.

A.F.S. INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS Our three winners of the 1977 Scholarship are well settled in to their new homes. They left Australia in August. Kathy McDermott has gone to Waverley, Nebraska; Debbie Connelly to Manitowoc, Wisconsin and Joanne Lindley to Cambridge, Maryland .

This year Joanne van Nugteren has won a scholarship. She will be going to U.S.A. in July 1979.

GERMAN EXCHANGE STUDENT Ulrike is the German exchange student who is staying with Barbara Carmichael.

She is from Melsungen, a small town near Frankfurt and is spending some time at C.L.C. to give her an opportunity to compare an Australian school with her school in Germany. She has attended classes with the Form Vs quite frequently. ln art, she succeeded in making a cane basket. During lunchtimes we tried (and almost succeeded) in teaching her a few of the Australian terms and sayings. She saw a lot of Melbourne's sights and towards the end of her stay she flew to Brisbane. She turned 18 while she was with us and was delighted when we presented her with a birthday card .

"Thank you very much for giving me the opportunity to attend your school for a few weeks. l liked it very much and J was very impressed by number of things the students do, several kinds of sport and all the art and craft work. This seems to be an advantage in Australian schools in comparison with German schools, although when you have never had it you would never think of starting it. l really enjoyed Mrs. Styne's pottery class and also the basket weaving, drawing and painting. " I found it difficult at first to stay at school until 3.40 p.m. because in Germany we start school at 8.00 a.m. and always leave before 1.30 p.m. But the actual hours are the same in Germany because of our earlier start and the fact that we do not have a lunch break.

"The method of teaching seems to be quite different. l think we learn more at school because during the lesson we have a discussion or a talk, while your students

EMPLOYMENT INTERVIEWS On Thursday, 27th July a large number of Form Y girls from various rooms were interviewed by Representatives of the Montmorency Commonwealth Employment Agency.

After the interviews the gentlemen came back to the classes and gave their comments, criticisms and suggestions arising from our manner, our dress and our answers.

We all felt that it was a worthwhile experience for future employment. We wish to thank Mrs. Boeyen and Mrs. Barry for all their time and assistance in organising this very helpful day.

thon , the proceeds of which ($1212) were presented to Kalparrin. a most worthy cause. Our congratulations to all those students who participated in the Walkathon.

It is most gratifying to know that our daughters have thoughts for others who are less fortunate than themselves.

The Walkathon was followed by a Gala Family Day and Barbecue at the de Pellegrin's home in Lower Eltham, which was a combined Fathers' and Mothers' Auxiliary function. Unfortunately the day was not as well attended as we would have liked; however those who did attend most certainly did enjoy themselves.

The Raffle this year cleared a total of $4082, which will certainly be put to good use in the precincts of the College.

The finance committee led by David Bailey devoted many ho urs to the orga nisation of this raffle and although the total cleared seems large we sti ll find that many families do not provide the support that the raffle deserves. The raffle was drawn at th_ Family Basket Supper Dance which, this year, was very well attended a nd apparently enjoyed by the diverse age groups involved .

C.L.C. FATHERS' ASSOCIATION The celebration of a Family Mass by Archbishop Sir Frank Little was the culmination of the year 1977. During the Mass Archbishop Little blessed a carved wooden statue of St. Michael which was presented to the school by the Fathers' and Mothers' Auxiliaries in recognitio n of the dedication of the Sisters of Charity and Sister Joan in the re-establishment of the College at Eltham. A miniature wood carving of St. Michael was presented to Sister Joan prior to her departure from the College.

The year 1978 was commenced predictably with a Communion Breakfast preceded

by Mass celebrated by Fr. Kierce of Whitefriars, Donvale. Det. Sgt. Neil Edwards of the Victorian Police Vice Squad was th e after "Breakfast" speaker. The one hundred or so Fathers in attendance were provided with some very thought provoking facts o n pornography, drugs and vice in Victoria by this very stra ight talking policeman .

Our thanks are extended to Sgt. Edwards for hi s frank but tasteful handling of the subject matter.

vision of "incidental" music between dances which delighted the teenagers present.

As you well know the Fathers' Association's main function is support of the school and in particular those functions which require ground and building maintenance, the provision of Parking Attendants and security at student functions. Year 1978 has been no different. At Student Socials Fathers were in evidence and the main social held for the students this year was perhaps the best yet seen at C.L.C. Throughout the school musicals Fathers provided stage door attendants, ushers, lighting control and of course Kevin Byrnes does sterling work as Technical Director.

Our President, Brian Daly, supervised the sealing of the access road beside the undercrofts, the concrete flooring in the undercrofts and the building of the external

toilets in that area. Concrete paths were provided from the Convent to the College.

From the roadway to the rear Administration entrance and external access to the Sick Bay area to facilitate loading and unloading heavy goods at ground level.

So far this year there have been two working bees. The first was a general cleaning and maintenance by both the Parent Associations. The second was to top dress the oval. Unfortunately the latter was not well attended and a further working bee will be held in the near future to complete that work. ln conclusion we thank Sr. Maureen and the Sisters of Charity and the College Staff for the care they have given to our daughters throughout the year and extend to them the promise of our continuing support in the future.
