VINCENTIA HOUSE REPORT
Aikenhead this year did not really excel in any activities. However, we did manage to come third in the House Sports, and did not do too badly in the tennis and swimming sports. We won quite a few netball matches, particula rly in the junior classes, but not enougih to top the ladder. A few girls sta nd out as eager and good pa rticipants in va rious activities: Mega n Klemm for swimming, Janine Rischin and Sally Crawford for tenni s and athletics, the Rehe sisters for table tennis, and the Junior School ' Captain, ·E lizabeth Woods. Ma ny other girls dese rve to be commended for ~heir enthusiasm and help throughout ~he year: Linda McNaught, Noni Morrissey , Marina and Jenny Brinkkotter, Carolyn McArthur and Maureen Bourke. Vice-captain, Nancy Am a lfi , and Middle School Captain, Lisa Browne, gave a great deal of support a nd help to the efficient running of the various activities. Thou gh 1976 was not a particul a rly successful year for Aikenhead in te rms of coming first, we m a naged ta- be fit competitors and to enjoy ourselves in everything we participated in . Hopefully, next year we'll see a few Aikenhead Cups on the trophy stand' --Catherine Bourke.
Vincentia 's greatest achievement this yea r was winning the At·hletics Trophy. We were not as successful in the other activities, but we enjoyed pa rticipating. We would like to thank all the Vincentia girls who have supported their tea m throughout the year. --Clare Bennetto.

The programme ran smoothly, and for this we would like to thank Mrs. Goodwin , Mrs. Cross and helpers. Mr. Downie a lso deserves recognition for •hi s tremendous interest and patience whilst producing the "Film of the Day ". We would also like to thank those who participated in the events, with congratulations to the individual winners. All in all it was a very successful and enjoya ble da y. Results: Vincentia 520, M a rita 496, Loyol a 496, Aikenhead 411. School Colours were presented to Kathy McDermott at the end of the Athletics season . With the completion of our new oval, we look forward to having next year's Athletic Sports at School for the fir st time.

DEVOTION TO OUR LADY AT SCHOOL T'he voluntary Rosa ry has co ntinued thi s yea r and groups of girls have been prese nt for a " before sc hool " Rosa ry or at a lunchtime Rosary. We hope the numbers will be greater next year. On Sunday, 10th October, some C .L.C. staff and gi rls were prese nt at the Ro sary Ra lly at Whitefriars, Donvale. During the afternoon Ca th y Bourke (in H.S. C .) represented the sc hool in speaking to the youth present about the standa rd s and attitudes of young people in our soc iety. She gave a very good short talk, mentioning the necessity of keeping to our Ca tholi c principles, including our tradition a l devotion to Our Lady as a means of coming closer to C hri st. CAR IT AS
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT An importa nt part of school ac tivities is helping others. During the year many girls spent tim e doing just this. As Judge Book Village is just beside us it receives quite a deal of attention. During the year Sr. Felici a and the girls in the Annexe went down to visit three of the hostels, and gave so me of them afternoon tea. The girls entertained the old people with singing and music, and also went to the infirmary to visit th e sick . A most enjoyable afternoon was experienced . During the tulip season Mrs. Hermans and her Form IV Religious Education class took some of the old people to the Tulip Fa rm at Sylvan. Lunch was provided by Mrs. Hermans and the girls. This letter was received as a result of the trip: Dear Sister, The folk who went with the College students to the Tulip Farm last week have asked me to express to you their sincere gratitude. They a ppreci ated the kindness of the girls, shown to the older fo'k , by many deeds a nd words; they were impressed by the excellent conduct of the girls throu ghout th e day and they enjoyed the beauty of the farm and its surrounds. Will yo u please convey our thank s to th e gi rls a nd to their teacher? We trust th at they enjoyed the trip too, and in their consideration for others found the day most sa tisfying. My kind regards, Yours sincerely. Norman C. Pearce, Ma Mager. Eve ry year the girl s do posters for the Judge Book Fair, and several girls go on the day to help on the stalls, with washing up and odd jobs. Ea rl y in December so me will go to help with decorating the ha ll for the C hri stm as party. TO HELP THE BLIND Duri •g the yea r Mrs. Kenn y and groups of girls have visited imtituti o ns connected with the blind , including Vill a Madonn a , Vill a O'Neill, Villa Ma ri a, hom es for the Elderly Blind . An acco unt of these visits, written by a Form lV student, a ppears in a nother part of the magazine. At a lunch-time during the second term, a "C. L.C. Marathon" was arranged by Sr. Felicia a nd the Annexe girls. There were entrants from all classes, and fifty dollars was raised for the Guide Dogs Appeal. AID FOR THE RETARDED CHILDREN Early in the year Mrs. Herm a ns and one of her Form IV Religiou s Ed uc ati o:i groups pa id a visit to C hurin ga to ' ee the work done for the retarded children. l n the third term Form V girls established their connection with C hurin ga. This year Sister Maria Luke, from the ' De Paul Centre', spoke to the

This scheme is run for two weeks during the summer - vacation, and allows pa rents and family of handica pped chi ldren to have a holid ay, while their child is being cared for a t the Centre. Volunteers were called for to assist in the caring of the children , a nd many girls were happy to be of service. Funds were also needed to aid the sc heme. The Form Vs held a ca ke stall to raise wme money , and over $32 was raised. This money will enable the ohildren to have some form of entertainment.
DOOR-KNOCK APPEAL Girls helped in the Salvation Arm y Door-Knock Appeal, and received a very appreciative letter for the amount they collected. MISSIONS During Lent a great effort was made by the girls, under the direction of the Treasurer of the Student C ouncil, Janine Hudso n, for the u sual donation to the Missions. Great enthusiasm man aged to bring the result to $900, which was sent to the Catholic Missions Office.
MEALS ON WHEELS Sr. Joan and Mrs. Colema n organi,ed the Form H Room 4 class tv ta ke part in the Eltham '" Mea ls on Wheel s". Here are some typica l impressions of what the experience mea nt to the girls.
Meals on Wheels gave m e a look at the generosity of the v olunteers and at th e loneliness of some people in the Eltham area. I t is not only helpful as a food ser vice, /mt I' m sure the old people look foru:ard to th e driver' s v isit and a f ew cheerful words. (Vivienne Dillon) M any of the people who have Mecils on Wheels live alone in small, old, run-down homes. I t i s really fantastic to see these people being cared for and µroviderl with a good m eal. (Mary Kaine) I felt sorr11 fo r th e people being so lonely. I hope we have a chance to :ro again. (Lynette R enouf) I rea lly enjo11ed M ecils on Wh eels because I like helping people and it was a good chance to s ee people worse off than yourself. ( J eannine R ehe) It is a very good organisation, and I know I would appreciate it if I was one of the old people. (Clare Gebbie) Y oii w ou ldn't believe th ere were µeople so lonely in the w orld. It's (Jenny Longton) good that someone cares for them . M eals on vVheels was quite an ex perience. (Sandra Van E eden) Th e thing that impressed me moa of all was the happiness these (Helen Murphy ) people had in helping others. 1ing e t iuenty-nin e
DRAMA '76 With great support from Sr. Marie Joan , Mrs. Casey has, once again , led her drama groups through a most successful year with "The Davidson Affair", first term , and " Fiddler on the Roof" , third term .
"THE DAVIDSON AFFAIR" The first of this year's productions was the modern day religious drama, "The Davidson Affair". lt was performed around Easter-tide by senior students of Catholic Ladies' College and Pa rade. The time chosen for the performances was in keeping with the theme of the plays as the question s posed throughout were centred upon the resurrection. The play itself is about a ma n, Jesus Da vidson-the name being a play on •words (Jesus, Son of David). It is an adaptation of the preaching life of O hrist, as portrayed by ·his efft:ct on the people he came in contact with , friend and foe a like, and their reaction to his death . In the form of a television interview the resurrection of Christ is questioned, tried and proved, the witnesses being modern day versions of Christ's closest friends , enemies, and converts. The audience, employed as judge and jury, are left to formulate their own conclusions. C atherine Bourke, in her final acting role as a C .L.C. pupil, concluded her drama '76 year on a glorious note in her portrayal of the very independent female interviewer, O ass Tennel. Cass's charming co-reporter, Juli a Kinca id, wa s played by Kathie Hedge·s with Cathie O 'Shea as the converted Magd aia . Elisa Basile wa s Mrs. Kapper, co-producer and Therese Holian the director. Terri Hed ges was the efficient secretary. Mary Collins and Angel a Hennel played the very demanding role of Jewish sentries. Julia 's outdoor crew were Anne Smeaton , on sound equipment, and Therese Holian . The studio crew consisted of Jenny Leigh , doing camera work, Joanne Lindley as the make-up girl and Carmel Murphy as the stage hostess . Ca rol Smeaton was our prompt a nd Mari anne C asey our lighting expert. Mr. Haesler al so contributed a great deal to this production in the capacity of general assistant-props, ma ke-up. "The Davidson Affair" was a demanding play but, under the professional guid a nce of Mrs. C a sey and the tremendous co-operation of the Parade boys, we found practices enjoyable and gained great sati sfaction out of our perform ances. -Cathie O 'Shea.
Set in the small Jewish village of An atevka , in Ru ssia, thi s touching mu sical illustrates the never-ending discord a nd struggle s between different peoples of different faiths and traditions. Ably led by John Bredenoord as Tevye "The Poppa", Lhe cast gave a most enthusiastic portrayal of life as it was in those troubled times. Both Angela Hennel and Catherine O'Shea gave good performances, as Golde o n their respective nights. The dau ghters, T zeitel , Hodel and C hava were played competently by Kathie Hedges, Jeanette Va nderslik and Annette
"FIDDLER ON THE ROOF" After the immense success of "The Davidson Affa ir", Mrs. C a sey, with the co-operation of Mrs. Spain , took - upon her~elf yet another mammoth production. In contrast to the deep reaching messages of " The Davidson Affair", " Fiddler on the Roof" captured the spirit and im agination of students a nd teachers alike ri ght through the school.

Hudson with Michelle Booth and Joanne Hickey as the two youngest daughters. Anita Egan gave an outstanding performance as Yente, the matchmaker. A truly impressive scene was the Dream Sequence with Marita Byrnes as a very convincing Gra.ndmother Tzeitel and Susan McClements as "the butcher's dear darling departed wife", Fruma-Sarah. Other characters include Jane Conole as Shandel , Motel 's mother, Jenny Leigh, Yussel the hatter, and Jenny Brinkkotter, Joanne Lindley, Terri-Anne Hedges, Tina Henne! , Maureen Hollyoak, M a ry-Loe Liddell as villagers. The music and singing were of excellent sta ndard-many thanks to Mrs. Spain our pianist and musica l director. Other musicians included Lili an Bariol a, the fiddler on the roof, Phillip Byrnes our organist, Mr. Hawley on drums, Johanna Selleck on the flute, Penny Alexander played the violin , and Debbie Waugh the glockenspiel. Also worth a very big mention were the Bottle Dancers and choirs. Excellent scenery was constructed under the direction of Mr. Byrnes, including Tevye's house whioh was seen from the outside, opened up to show the inside, reversed to form the bar for the bar scene. The backdrop, which added to the atmosphere, was designed by Mr. Luigi Raiola , to whom we are very grateful. From all reports " Fiddler on the Roof" was a most successful and enjoyable production , both from the points of view of the participants, a nd the a udiern:es. We had arranged for three performa nces but by popular request a fourth performance was put on at very short notice. lt was only through the professional guidance of Mrs. Casey and the tremendous amount of her time and effort that wa s given to us, that such a high standard was obtained.
PARENT INVOLVEMENT
-
PARENTS' MEETING , MAY 1976 .
Because many parents expressed concern at the pressures exerted by society on their teenage daughters , we thought that it would be useful for the parents to gather together to discuss common problems. A preliminary meeting of a group of leaders was held to pinpoint the main areas of concern. Ideas from this meeting, together with ideas suggested by the teachers and senior girls were the source of the discussion topics and questions planned for rhe general meeting. These were organized under the headings: friends, appearance, television , use of money, types of entertainment, attitudes in the home and attitude to their religion. Well over 500 parents signified their interest in rhe meeting which was held at the College on Sunday , 2nd May. Twenty-five groups of parents at the meeting discussed the topics, and notes were made of each of these discussions. The central committee of the leaders under the chairmanship of Dr. J. Santamaria. took the main points of these notes and put them together into a booklet. This little publication which was a re-statement of parents' attitudes expressed at ~he meeting, was given to all parents at the June parentteacher night. A very great number of apprec1at1ve comments was received from parents and from ma.ny others associated with the girls. It was certainly a profitable exercise for all concerned.
- Kathie Hedges.
FATHERS' ASSOCIATION Rev. Fr. Gerald Dowling graciously accepted an invitation to be our guest speaker at the Annual Communion Breakfast. This function once again was an outstanding succe$S. - The school picnic this year took place at Assumption College , Kilmore, a fter the parents were involved in a c11.r rally on the way to the picnic site. The Dinner Dance, so excellently organized by the Mothers' Committee , was the next social function , and the fathers completed the year with the "Family Basket Supper Dance". Drawing of the Raffle , "Trip to Fiji" was the big event of this very enjoyable evening. The raffle is the only source of income for this Association and it finances the many projects that the fathers undertake to ca rry out. This yea r has seen the oval reach 95 % towards completion , concrete steps and ramps have been constructed from the second level. Old trees, rubble, and mounds of rubbish were removed from the remamder of the lo wer level and as this magazine goes to print, the major part of this area is now bei~g drained , graded a nd grassed to provide further playing and sporting area.

FORM IV RELIGIOUS EDUCATION EXCURSION
WALHALLA
To mark the end of seco nd term , it was decided that Mrs. Kenny's Room 12 Form 1~ R.E. class would go on an excursion. As religion was to be the theme, It was chosen th at we be given a guided tour of both St. . Franci s' Church and St. Patrick 's Cathedral, break for lunch a nd finally v1s1t various old peo ple's home s run by 'Vill a Maria', having broken into smaller groups to do so. So accordingly we set out on Wednesday , 18th August, travelled by bus to the city! a nd were given vhorough and quite interesting talk s and tours when we v1s11ed both churches. This was followed by lunch in a nearb~ park , aft~r. which w~ divi.ded into group> of approximately eight and v1s1ted .the .V11la Mana. soc1et1es. The latter was perhaps the most interesting, since 1t was an active way of expressing what we learn at school. Some of us had made cakes which the inh a bitants certainly seemed to appreciate, and a ll joined in the talking and singing which followed . After overcomin~ our initial se lf-consciousnes5 on having been shepherded into the room rn which rhe elderly, near-blind ladies were spending their afternoon , we really beca me interested in them as people, and enjoyed our time with them as much as they declared they enjoyed theirs with us. Since we were evidently expected to sing at one of the societies, we complied a fter having had no rehea rsal at all, surprising even ourselves with. rendition s of hymn s we knew, so ngs from musicals, a nd even a sterling effort a t the College Song (having had as said before, neither plans nor practice'). The excursion was a great success, and following a note of gratitude from one of the matron s, we decided to sta ge a concert for them, to be given at the end of the year. At the moment, we are looking up old songs for thi s purpose, and looking forward to both it a nd a vi sit to "Squasih Way" , with which it will be combined. St1ccess at this stage can't be stated but if. tihey and we enjoy ourselves as much as we did last time, a good day will be had by a ll. - Pam O 'Co nnell, Form IV, Room 12.
On 9th November, Mrs. Dixon and Mrs. Ham accompanied tho Room 9 girls on their fir st excursion for the year. At 8.35 a.m. , the bus left C .LC. for a three hour journey to Walhalla . The atmosphere on the bus was somewhat chaotic, but everybody was in good spirits. The bus trip was m ade more enjoyable by singing, talking and the general BUZZ of conversation. The invasion of Wa lh a lla began at 11 .30 a.m., when the Room 9s piled off the bus a nd bought the Kiosk out of icy-poles. The first thrilling event of the day wa s riding on the railway pully, which wa s a lot of fun and good exercise. We had a. barbecue lunch in the peaceful surroundings. T~e afternoon activities were highlighted by the tour through the gold mrne (500 feet underground) , a look in one of the only remaining hou ses built during the gold rush in Walhalla, and the climb up a steep hill to the old cemetery, which was very peaceful (what else could it be?). The day was a great success, excluding a few unfortun ate mishaps, e.g. Debbie and Andrea getting lost (found again!), Katy's unexpected companion--a leech, and the bus brea king down on the way home. Thank s to Mrs. Di'lon , Mrs. Ham and the bus driver, everybody had a good day. -S ue Howley , Angel a Pavone and Diane Rowe.
FORM II EXCURSION On Wednesda y, 18th Augu st, a ll of Room 4 sc rambled into a bus with Sr. Joa n and Mrs. Barry, and headed for ' the Fitzroy Gardens. We wa.ndered throu gh the gardens observing the model Tudor Village, the Fairy Tree, and the magnificent flowers in th e Conservatory . Next we walked to St. Patrick 's Cathedral , noting the old C.L.C. on our way. After that the bus met us and took us to the Shrine. After thirty minutes of reverent respect in the Shrine, we went to the Science Museum and participated in a lecture on early tran sport in Victoria . After th a t we had some free time to wander a round and have lunch. Finally, after an enjoyable day, we wearily climbed into the bus and prepared for our .i ourney bac k to sc hool. -Deborah Lee, Toni Lalor, Room 4 .

C.L.C. CHAPLAINS F ather Jenkins, parish priest of Our Lady's, Eltham, has always been very generous in coming to the school for Masses and other devotions. This year he h as been joined by Fr. McCo rmack from St. Gregory's, Doncaster and Fr. McCa.nn , Templestowe. Our three chapl•a ins have been most interested in their involvement in the school and we have been fortunate in hav ing three Masses a week on a regular basis and also Masses for special occasions. Special instructions on the Sacrament of Reconcili ation were given and opportunities to receive the Sacrament, which were greatly appreciated by the students. The Ohapla ins also took part in the Fom1s V a nd VI Electives, a mutually successful venture. Fr. McCormac k celebrated the H.S.C. Graduation Mass with pa rent s, students and staff and Fr. Jenkins celebrated the end of year Parents' Mass. We a re deeply grateful for the involvement of our three C haplains in the life of the school and hope it will continue for many years.
SPECIAL READING Many thank s to the mothers who have come during the year to help individual students with reading diffi.c ulties. The girls were most appreciative, as was shown by the little afternoon the girls, with Mrs. Dixon, organised for these mothers.
