14th Oct.- Funher developments in the continuing train saga-a lightning strike was struck and we were extremely lucky(?) lo catch the last train 10 sc hool. There was, however, a con,,picuous a bsence of many teachers. . .

15th Oct.-THE netball match of the year: staff versus students. Contrary lo popular opinion. the staff won. On this point , we must take the word of the extre mely impartial, unbiasscd, astute, candid and fairdealing Mrs. Offman , who kept th e scores.

16th Oct.-Lilian Bariola and Helen Moore went to Melbourne University to collect prizes for th e German (Goethe) Competition. Lili a n gained equal second place. Congratulations to both girls.

21st Oct.-Form IV held a n er.tertaining "flashback" in the Hall. Proceeds from the event. which featured ~cenes from bygone days at C.L.C., went into a fund to ma ke Christmas hampers for Judge Book Homes.

27th Oct.- H .S.C. girls were let loose among the wildlife at Healesville Sanctuary. A little ungainly at fir5t, they soon fell into harmony with their natural environment. Mrs. Burke made some interesting studies while S1. Helen fraternised with kPala s and kangaroos. During lunch however, the two were attacked by a greedy and obtrusive emu.

Afterwa rd s, with the aid of our friendly bus driver, Lionel, we went to M aroo ndah Dam , where the spillway was in full spate, looking ra ther like Niagara. A good day.

Verbs a nd ten ses for lan guages, spelling for English of course, Formulae for Maths a nd Science, yet the teachers feel no remorse.

The tidying up of the class-room, the cleaning of the corridor, The creeping round the exam-rooms, Past the libra ry on the second floor.

For knowledge and virtue we gallantly strive, fntent too, on remaining in one piece and a live.

The ring of the bell , the feeling of elation, The grabbing of our bags a nd the rush to the station.

"FINIAN'S RAINBOW" 8th and 9th December, 1975 Th e Mu sical of 1975 was "Fini a n's Ra inbow '', complete with th e ra inbow which was very difficult to projec t onto the backd rop.

The mu sic a nd s in gi ng of thi ~ gay, a ppea lin g musica l were developed

by Mrs. M. Spain. Th e Produce r-Director was Mrs. C . M. Casey. The Valley a nd Villa ge of R a inbow Va lley were c rea ted by Mr. Byrnes with ~cenery, a nd he added to the fantasy with li ght s.

M a rita Byrnes sang beautifully and was a ch a rmin g Trish Coll ee n.

H er " father" Finian (S usa n McC leme nt s) wa s the traditi o na l Trish dreamer.

W oody, the " boy fri e nd ", was we ll depicted by Juli e Pittle.

One of the most lovab le characters was the L e prec ha un , pl a yed by Rosema ry Bourke. Th e Senator (J ac ki e G etson) effec tive ly kept everyone wondering if she re a lly turned black. Buzz (Catherine W a lker), the Sheriff (A nita Ega n) a nd th e o ther characters were very convincing. Another popul a r favourite was Susan , Woody 's dumb siste r (Lisa Brow ne); he r dancing was excell e nt. Eve ryone enjoy ed the mixture of fa ntasy , si ngin g, da nc ing, story a nd ac ting.

FORM Ill TRIP TO BALLARAT To coincide with 'ections of work studied in both the History and Geography classes. it was decided that the whole of Form Ill (Rooms 8, 9, 19 and 20) visit Ballarat for a day. Since "gold" was our current history topic, :ind " urban network s" our geography, Sovereign Hill seemed to fit both categories as geography could be attacked on the way , witl.i the recording of townships and function s, and history at Sovereign Hill , where th e display of ac tivities and availability of inform a tion would m a ke an insight into the gold era possible.

Tuesday, August 19th, was the day allotted for the excursion, and as all we train travellers were forced to ri ' e :::lmost an hour earlier in order to catch the bus, we anticipated an informative and enjoyable day. Buses transported us to Ballarat, a long with Mrs. Dixon and Mrs. Hofmann, our histor y teachers, :incl Miss Stawyskyj, who ha ndled the geograpy. Two mothers a lso consented to come, so our two buses were filled to capacity.

We had previously been given geographical sheets for the recording of observa ti o ns and functions on the way, dncl though we were reluctant a t first to spend the journey up writing a ll we noted, we found the task to be not too overwhelming, as the majoriy of town s were small a nd sported few function s. Ballnra t was th e exception, and we were engaged in busily recording a ll functions there a s we swe pt through the township' Once :•t Soverei!:!n Hill , we were !:!iven a short lecture on the functions of it , project books - to co111plete and- directions. H ad we expected to be marshalled around in one large group we were pl easa ntly surprised, as we were permitt ed to wander a round a t wil! in groups the numbers of which we re left to o ur choice. The shops, machinery a nd other m a in places of int e rest were visited by most, and the majorit y of us were fascinated by the retention of the whole "sc t-up"-eve rythin g was exactly as you would expect on an I 850's golclficld' The excursion pro ved profit a ble ir, many ways, th e most important from th e practical se nse being th a t we were given a real insight into the work we w·ere tackling at sc hool. FORM IV EXCURSION Recently th e fourth form students paid a visit to the various blind institutions throughout Malvern - Villa O'Neill , Villa Madonna and Villa Maria. The girls were divided into groups, and each group went to one of the thre e Villas. Our particular group went to Villa Maria.

After stepping off the bus. we proceeded to the office, only to find that we were unexpect ed guests, a nd were obviously in the wrong place; yet despite ~everal futile attempts at explanation on our part, the staff still insisted that we were not sc heduled to be there. What were we to do?

The bus had gone and it was at least a mile to Villa Madonna a nd Vill a O'Neill' Fo1 lunately, th e gentleman in charge came to our rescue. and drove us to Villa Maria , where we were introduced to the M a tron , who escorted us to a sitting room and introduced us to two of the ladies. We found it 11uge

much easier than we had imagined to ca rry on a conversation with them .

They were eager to show us their handwork , which they had made at regular craft lessens. There were such items as pottery, knitting, leat he rwork, embroidery, cushions and ash trays. One lady had entered her work in the open sectiL'n of the Roy a l Melbourne Show, and won first pri ze . which we thought was a tremend o us achievement.

Within the hour we had learnt about their ability to read Bra ille . their cassette recorded books, their families, their childhood and their forthcoming trip to Lourdes. What amazed us most was how they coped with their disabilit y. They were not easily discouraged or upset ; th ey took life as it came and made th e most of it.

After our visit we lunched on the buses, a nd then left for th e seco nd ha lf of our excursion at Malvern Squashway. With a variety of sportin g activities offering, including squash, bowling, table tennis a nd swimming. we were all ~e t for an enjoyable afternoon. Everyone was keen to try her ha nd at bowling, a nd if the aim of the game ha d been to get the ball in the gutters, most of us would have done very well. After many efforts on our part, two hand so me champions (from Mee's Bus Lines) came a nd ~howecl us how it was clone. For those who still could not manage a bowling ba ll, squash balls were a relief.

After exerting ourselves at these two sports, we were glad of a quieter game of table tennis or a re fre shing sw im in the pool. All in all it wa s a great day , and we are all looking forward to a nother one like it.

TRIP TO GERMANY I guess it would he everybody's wish to be able to travel the world a nd see other countries: until aw~ rded the schol a rship by th e Society for the Au st ra li a n / German Student Exchange. T had never imagined that l would fulfill this dream so ea rly in my life. But , by some stroke of Fate.

I was lucky, a nd in December 1974, l , a long with Catherine McN a m ara of C .L. C . a nd 35 students from Au strali a and New Zealand were up and away - to what, none of us were quit ~ sure.

I was afraid when T left: a fr a id of ieav ing family a nd friends behind: nervous of what T would face a head. Luckily, my fears were proved unnecessa ry. The " fo , ter-family" with which T lived provided the secure home life that T, as a nervous sixteen yea r old foriegner, needed very muc h. Through th e m , T was shown German Life. as a German mi gh t see it: T was not so much a tourist as a normal German adolescent.

The aim behind all these exchange scholarship~. is to create a bond of goodwill a nd fri endship between two countries that are on opposite ends of the globe. With me , this aim was achieved, for eve n though at time s T felt home sick , lonely a nd sc forth. my general impression is one of a fantastic experience that ha:; done me a lot more good than harm . T have been able to visit many European countries, including my parents' hom eland, Holland: I have been <! ble to m a ke contacts that l hope T sha ll never lose. Tt was, in truth. a once in a lifetime experience, that T hope a few more C.L.C. girls will be able to enjoy.

WINGS OF FIRE

On Friday. 18th April , a t 4 o'c lock, the bus containing forty-two Form If girls a nd their teachers, Mi ss Stawyskyj , Mrs. Goodwin and Mrs. Omar, le ft th e sclwol gro unds, bound for Sorrento Hou se for the weekend.

Arriving by six o'clock . th e girl s sett led inio their a llotted rooms before goi ng to dinner. Each l!irl wa ~ inform ed d th e roster for washing th e dishe s, setti ng tab le a nd ge ne ra ll y clean in g up a fter each me a l. After dinner, a ll went to the rec rea tion room to pl ay records or tab le tenni s. At half-past ten bedti•11e was an no un ced, but it was ne:irer to twelve before eve ryo ne finally stopped ta lkin g and gigg lin g' The next mornin g was take n up with a walk a long the front beac h , a break for lunch , <1 r.d then a walk to the bac k beach . The rest of th e afternoo n was spe nt there: a few br:•ved the cold for a sw im , while the rest ex pl ored the ~:ind dunes. The even in g was rounded off by a concert wh ich proved to be quite hilarious.

An early Mass was a tt end ed on Sunda y morning at the loca l church .

The pa cking was done afte r thi s, a rd a ll went their sepa rate ways. In the a fternoon a trea~ ure hunt was organised. in which everyone took pa rt.

By three. girl s a nd teachers were say in g th e ir " th a nk-you 's" nnd farewells to the camp m a n2ge r a nd hi s wife a nd were headed for home. Thus end ed a trul y en joya ble weekend.

As morning da wned hot and dusty , th e daily routine began. The famil y wa s stirrin g, ha lf-as lee p, getting ready for the day a head of them.

The children hurried for tod ay they were going o n a n exploration to the centre of the bush. Condi ti ons a nd "do nt 's" were told , as no good mum ever lets her childre n go out without warning them first. Lunches and accessor ies that might be needed were pac ked int o kn a psacks a nd strapped to backs. The great explorers were ready to begin.

The children , now free. ran a nd ran into the bush a nd were as eager as beavers to reach the centre of th e bush. M a ny o ther peo ple had made thi s trip a nd had cleared a small pl ace where a book for visitors to sign their names had been placed . Although the children kn ew this, they felt like Blaxland, Wentwort and La wson out on an ex pediti on to the Blue Mounta ins.

As they drew closer to th e clearing the a ir beca me hotter a nd hotter and ha rder to breathe. If they hadn ' t wanted to rea ch th e clearing so badl y they would have turned back. Thinkin g their load s were ca usin g the extreme heat they un strapped them se lves a nd walked on unburdened, but instead of the a ir becoming cooler it became hotte r a nd stuffi er a nd breathing became even harder than before . One of the children , seeing a red light before them , ra n up to it and stood there frozen with te rror. Wh at she had see n she could not believe. Red flame s were eat in g up th e trees a nd th e re was no way of stopping them. Smoke was everywhere a nd even though the other children were quite a dist a nce awa y from th e fire , the y were blinded a nd they stumbled over rocks over a nd over aga in.

When the y re ac hed the child , she was badly sco rched a nd burnt a ll over her body. When they carefully examined he r they found th at she was barely a live. Panicking . they started to run away but however fas t they ran the fire would a lw ays be gaining on th em . Eventually they were too tired to run , s0 they lay flat on thei r backs. The fire came roar in g over them , burning th e m so badly th at th ey too were scarcely a live.

If only they had run th a t little bit farther the y would have been saved, as there was a river only one hundred yards down the track where the fire burnt itseif o ut. Their parents organized an a ll-out search , but they only found the knapsacks left o n the ground where the children had left th em , untouched by the fire.

The idea was accepted enthusiastically a nd so pl a ns were made for th e camp a t Sorrento Hou se. Approximately 45 girl s were privile ged t.i go. a nd as th e bus left th e schoo l o n Friday afternoon , excitement "rew. Our a rrival at 5orrent o Hou se was one of confusion, but afte r hal1· an hour all wa s se ttl ed. Fr id ay ni ght saw eve rybody enjoying th em 'e lves in th e rec reation room a nd a t 11 o 'c lock everyone was shephe rded to bed. Exce pt for th ose f0rtunate to ge t away with midni ght fe asts th e night passed uneventfully.

Sa turd ay mornin g after breakfast we went down to the shops. At I 0.30 we went for a sw im on the front beach. For some students. the sw im wa s one of exc it ement a nd terror, when they were chased screaming from th e wa ter by a st in gray who joined them in their frolickin g.

After lun ch we went to the back beach and stayed there for severa l hours , leaving a fter a disastrous game of ·cricket and a sand dune race won by Mrs. Mac Pherson. On Saturday night , th ose not already exhausted from the day's o uting, danced a nd played table tennis. We decided to go to Mass on Saturday nigh t a nd afte rw a rd s da nced until exhausted. At o ne o'clock Sunday morning a grou p of e nerge tic sk ippers skipped away until they were considered exhausted.

Sunday morning we packed our bags and th an ked our host and hostess for a really great weekend. Last m·nute photos were ta ken and under the su pervi sion of Mrs. GcoJwin , Mrs. MacPherson and Mi ss Stawyskyj , we left Sorrento Hou se.

INTERNATIONAL SCIENCE SCHOOL, 1975 Th e Intern a ti ona l Science School , which l a ttended a lon g with nine other Victori a n student s, was held o ver th e fortnight of the September holid ays. The school was held in th e Physics Department of Sydney University, and the course consisted basica lly o f a se ries of lectures give n by a se lection of world renowned lecturers, whose topic s ca me under the ge nera l hea din g of "Our Earth' '. Student s from a ll ove r Austra li a a ttended , a long with several from N ew Zeal a nd , U.S.A ., J a pa n a nd England . The majority of intersta te student s sta yed at C ranbrook School, which is situ a ted near the harbo ur.

Although the days were spe nt a t the uni vers ity, we were give n the freedom to see part s of Sydney by night , a n opportunity th at most of us seized. Perh a ps one of the most impo rt a nt opportunities was the chance we were given to mee t a il th e oth e r student s, both Au stra li a n a nd overseas, a nd th e ma ny other wonderful peopl e who we re somehow involved.

ATHLETICS The 1975 H ou;e Athletic Spurt s were held on 18th April at Willenda Park. Montmorenc y. We were fortunate in having a beautiful d ay and a first class ve1 :ue, which re sult ed in a very successful meeting. Thi s year the progra mme ca tered for both trac k and field events and all excep t for th e jumps were held on th e day.

Th e H ouse Ca pt ain s were hampered in their choice of competitors by th e lack o f int eres t shown Juring prac tice sess ions. It was most re grettable and m ea nt a gre:1t dea l more work for th ose in chnrge. I hope th at next ye ar representati on will not be left 10 the few loya l supporters. However, the en1husi:1sm or the cheer squ ads was dlmus1 overwhelmin g. It was good to see th at H o use Spirit is at las t becoming a part of C. L.C. li fe.
