HIGHER SCHOOL CERTIFICATE The yea r is dra wing to a close, a nd we, the H.S.C. class of 1974, will soon be say in g good-bye to C.L.C. We have had the privilege of being the se nior cl ass in the college for two success ive years. During that time many things have ha ppened - thin gs which lea ve us with happy memories of sc hool. Ma ny of the girls in our class experienced the tran sition from East Melbo urne to Eltham and were fully a bl e to a pprecia te the ma ny adva nt ages assoc ia ted with the new C.L. C. For a successful ye a r we extend o ur th a nks to our parents a nd teacher s.

We will always remember the tradition s of C. L. C. ; we will carry the motto of the sc hool with us throu ghout our lives, a nd live up to the standard th a t it sets for us: " Knowled ge a nd Virtue United··.

Activities At the beginning of the year we ha d great plans for a campaign to i11ject a n even betler spirit into th e College. We tried hard but found o urse lves being somewhat weighed down with the burden of stud y. Excuses, excmes. Howe ver, as a class we have un de rt a ke n a nd. I might add. been successful in , a number of ventures . . . .

One day early in fir;: t term , twelve bn1.ve H.S.C. girls and one hundred first formers ga thered a t school a nd hea ded off in three Mee's buses for a Saturday morning's ice skating. Apart fr o m one cracked skull a nd nume rou s bruised a na tomi es, a great time was had by <ill (we think).

Two da nces were held in th e Ha ll. one in first and one in second term . for Form V and H.S. C. In eac h case, a fter a n a fte rnoon of prepara tion , the ha ll looked rea lly festive with ba llo ons. food, streamers, food , the sc hool ba nner and food. The two groups we employed were Tarkio a nd T a nas Ma nd a la. On each occasion comments were made on our fantastic li ghtin g e ffect s. Tlianks are due to Sister Ma rie Joan a nd the mothers and father s for their help on both occas ions.

On 30th Ma y thirt y-two girl s made their debut in the College H a ll. a t th e Old Collegia ns' Caba rat Ball. After being presented to Bishop P e rkins and the President of th e Old Collegia ns, Mrs. Helen J urse vic, the Deb. set, trained by Miss Amelda Rowe a nd Mr. Ted Emmett , did them credit by executing th e pr-ese nt a tion dance without one mi sta ke! An evening to be rem e mbe red by all the debutantes. pa rtners, parents and friend s.

Notable amongst our other activiti es was the two-d ay Retrea t at the Co nve nt at th e beginnin g of April. F.,;t ther Heriot , who steered the Retre a t. endeared him se lf to all the gi rl s with hi s jovia l, na tural a pproac h.

geographica l, artistic a nd lite rary , led us during the yea r to such places as Wesley College. the C ultural Centre, La Trobe University a nd Trinity Grammar Schoo l. The la tter staged an excellent pe rform a nce of Henry IV Part 1 - a perform a nce equalled or excelled only by our own school production of The Crucible, one of the pl ays on this year's English Lite rature sy llabus. More correctly. it was a joint effort by C.L.C. a nd Parade. Weeks of practice under Mrs. Ca;:ey's direction produced result s which reall y impre;:sed the a udiences on both nights , a nd a ugur ve ry well for the future of drama a t C .L. C . Spec ia l praise is due to Mary-Rose Casey of Form V and Terry Guest, wh o pl ayed the leading roles.

A CHALLENGE TO PARADE Recentl y six Form V students-Kerry Ba tes. Carmel Ca milleri, Lynette Doclman , Julie Fitzsimmons, Jenny Ha rri so n, Ann De Pelligrin-brave ly confronted a pa nel of well-known fashion critics in a dressmak ing competition orga ni sed by Elna for seco nd ary students. All were commended for attention to detail in versatility of style, choice of fabrics, skilful construction and personal presentation. In some cases the styles projected beyond current trends as a result of creative thinking and planning.

Three of these st udent s were highly commended. Julie obtained a n equal seco nd in her region a l division whilst Jenny and Lynette were selected to display their garments in the " hi ghl y commended" 'ec tion.

GERMAN SCHOLARSHIPS Each yea r th e Society for Australian-G e rman Student Exchange awards scholarships for students to live for three months in Germany. The purpose of these scholar~hips is to give Australi a n students who study German the opportunity to visit G~ rmany , to ' ee and understa nd and experience the German way of life.

Filling in the application form just seems part of the German course.

You give your school results , age, and you think desperately of some interesting hobbie s th a t could make yo u more e li gible in the eyes of the Society Board . Then you hope th a t the teachers will give a marvellou s. appraising, flattering but honest character referenc e.

Successful applicants are interviewed by the se lection committee of eight men and two ladies. During the interview they a re asked question s

about Australia, Germany. interests, etc .. and are required to converse in German.

The Scholarships are donated by German companies in Australia (a reverse exchange scheme operates with Australian companies in Germany).

This year there we:·e over 300 applications from Victoria, 26 were selected for final interviews ;rnd subsequently 15 students were selected as winners.

Of these 15, two are from C.L.C. Diane Groenewegen is one of seven Leaving students and Catherine McNamara is one of eight Matriculation winners.

While in Germany tne students stay with individt•ally selected families and so see Germany through the eyes of a 'German', not as a tourist. With our 'famiiies' we will be ahle to make friends through school and through cur 'brothers and sisters'.

It is difficult to say just what emotions you feel when you find you have won a scholarship-great excitement, but a twinge of fear , anticipation, an urge to crawl back into your shell and wait until the fuss is over.

Perhaps the most import a nt thing is finding out which of the other finalists have won scholarships. We had already met the other finalists at an informal Kaffee und Kuchen (coffee and cakes) evening and have since met the winners at travel briefings and at another Kaffee und Kuchen afternoon held at the home of our group leader, Lois Reynolds. Lois and the other leader from Sydney were 1971-1972 winners. The group leaders accompany us on the flight , co-ordinate any group activities and are generally the "problem solvers".

On J 6th November there will be a presentation banquet at the ballroom of the Southern Cross Hotel. December the eighth is the day we fly to Frankfurt. At Sydney we will be joined by students from New Zealand and the Eastern States and at Singapore by students from Perth. Altogether there will be 40 in the group. We fly to Germany with Qantas and home with Lufthansa.

We will be studying during our stay and on our return we a re expected to submit a written report to the Society.

Diane is staying at Ludwigs-Hafen, on the Rhine, and Catherine expects to be in the Munich area. While in Europe, Diane is going to take the opportunity to visit relatives in Holland.

The last three days before our return to Australia all the students will be staying in Berlin. During this time we will visit East Berlin. Other group trips are also likely during our stay and these are arranged by the group leaders.

The Fathers' Auxiliary has been a great help to the school in many ways. Several working bees have been arranged and valuable assistance given .

The fathers have been responsible for the Father and Daughter Night, the Family Picnic and, with the mothers, for the Family Festival.

Once we had overcome our disappointment, plans for the Reynolds and Slade musical 'Free As Air' went ahead . 'Free As Air' involves a large cast, and a> the so ngs are bright and catchy, it seemed to us an excellent choice.

The mu sical te lls the story of the inhabitants of the island of Terhou.

These folk with their simple outlook on life are worried about the absence of a n island queen. The arrival of Geraldine (played by Julie Pittle) seems to solve a ll problems. but in fact leads to more.

The humorous romance of Miss Catamole (Lin C haplin) and Potter (Michele Bibby) adds much 'to the enjoyment of the play, as does the ac tivity of the reporter lvy Crush (Marita Byrnes).

Friday night rehearsals were held regularly during the third term and nrnin choruse> were learnt in class singing lessons. Undoubtedly, the most popula r song in the show was 'Let The Grass Grow Under Your Feet'.

The easy rhythm of this song is perfect for the 'soft-shoe shuffle' superbly performed by Lord Paul (Ke lly Ryan). Mutch (N ano J ach) and Potter (Michele Bibby).

Other characters in the play who certainly deserve a mention were Jack Amersha m, the racy , popular car-driver, played by Amand a Johnson , Albert Poothumous, the keen but ~hy rival for Geraldine's attentions, played by Gillian Twist , the three reporters played by Therese D aye. Susan McClements and Debbie Guest.

Cathy Luckm an gave an appealing performance as Mollie, the young idand girl , dazzled by the bright lights of the mainland , who find s that there is really no place quite like home' A trip for the cast to sec ' Irene' at Her Majesty's Theatre in the city was arranged, and there is no doubt th at we all benefited from seei ng a live and profession al perform ance.

FREE AS AIR It was suggested this year that the Second Form should present a musical, and under the direction of Miss Nicholls. auditions were held a nd songs learnt for 'Oliver!' Rehearsal s however came to an a brupt h alt: it was discovered that the play would not be available until December.

Me ntion must be made. of the co-operation of numerous people who worked backstage-in Wardrobe and the Props department, in Lighting and Make-up. Without these people the show could not have run so smoothly. P articul ar thanks must go to Mrs. Spain, for her superb musical direction. and above all to the producer, Miss Nicholls.

Despite the amount of work involved , everyone ag reed that the production of 'F ree As Air' was well worth while, and it is to be hoped that a musical will become an annual event in the C .L.C. calendar.

CONTRIBUTION JUDGE BOOK In our modern society there are many lonely people. Anybody ca n be lonely, young children, teenage rs, middle-aged and elderly people. Elderly people are perhaps the loneliest. Fortunately in our rnc iety there are many good men, women and children who devote part of •heir leisure time talking to these people and helping them to feel wanted. Often when people get on in years, their families will put them in a home, leaving their welfare in the hands of those people who run the home. The nursing ai des and hou se mothers ca n only devote a very limited amount of time to stop and chat with their patie nt s, to liste n to them and to laugh with them , since they have so many ot her duties to attend to in the course of a day.

This year Form 111. Room 9. ha s ta ken a necessary, but not very often fulfilled tas k: helpin g the old and lonel y. Once every three or four weeks we go down to the Jud ge Book Memorial Village with our Integrated Studies T eac her- Mrs. Met ayer. Once there. we split up into groups of six a nd each gro up heads for its alloca ted a rea of the village . We generally return to the sa me people each time we visit the village. In this way eve ryone feds more rel axed and the conversation tends to flow more naturally. Most of these people are lonel y and eve n if they have families , the visits can be few and far between. The village is made up of a number of buildings. These include se lf-contai ned flat s (w here the elderly support themselves o n their pensions, they only have to pay a sma ll amount of rent); then th ere a re sm all hmte ls, which are very much like large hou ses with a sunroom, individual bed-sitting rooms and a communal dining-room .

These hostels usunlly nccommoda te between 12-14 people. There is also a hospita l which looks after the sick and needy. All the patients in the hospital are residents of the Jud ge Book .

The village is run by Methodists, but there is no discrimination rega rdin g perso ns of a nother religion. The people who a re resident s of the Jud ge Book range from the ages of 60-102. They a re always very glad to see u s and often very disappoinred when we leave . Our vi si ts a re a pleasant change to their daily routine. We help them to forget their troubles

while we listen to their stori es of the past when they were children . We also take them magazines a nd sometimes sin g songs for them. Our youthful smiles and encouraging words a re the things they cherish the most. The gratitude shown by the looks on their faces is very rewarding and we feel thankful that we are able to brighten the lives of these lonely people. We

are at prese nt. mak ing ru gs fo r them ou t of scraps of wool which we crochet into squares. These are then c roch eted to ge th er to make very fine knee rugs, most appreciated gifts sinc·e many of these peo ple spend most of their time in a sitting position. We .tlso take the m fruit a nd cakes as we feel th a t the se are a pleasa nt cha nge from the food they receive eve ry day.

Just as th ese peopl e have grow n old , su tau will you one day. Perhaps you will be in the same situat ion as the se elderly citizens whose families may reject or perhaps forget. them. Room 9 has reali zed the need for thi s type of social se rvi ce work. and we get a great sat isfac tion in knowing that we ourselves are pla ying a sma ll part in helping our fellow man. The cup was won by M arit a with a total of 429 points, second Loyola with 426, third Vin ce ntia with 374 and fourth Aikenhead with 359.

Thi s year it was pl anned to have a full Athletics Meeting on the E ltham Oval on M ay I st. Due to the l ateness of the date se t and th e co ntinuously we t weather at th e time , it was impossib le to find a suitable ground in a fit condition for Athletics. Rather th an postpone or ca ncel th e day, it was decided to hold a Fun Event effort on the N etball courts with th ose competitors listed fo r event s being th e ones to participate. Thi s held no sa ti sfac tion from an athl eti c point of view but did alleviate the let-down which would have resulted had th e day been ca ncelled altogether. All races were run in <~ novelt y m anner and in m ost ca ses if not won by skill and ability, success was obtained by shee r effort.

The field gam es events had been held prior to thi s day and though coaching had onl y been in acti on for a sho r t time , th e st andard achie ved in all events was ve ry comm endable.

During the past winter netba ll season , C. L.C. had five team s pa rticipating in the competition. Two of the five teams were successful in reaching the finals, namely the Form 2 and Form 4 teams. Unfortun ately the Form 2 were defeated in the qu a rter fina l; however the Form 4 team managed to be more successful. Due 10 hard trainin g and co-operation from every member, the team had a convincing win over Mercy College in the grand final : score 32-27. This was a rem arkab le effort , as previously Mercy College had defeated C.L.C. twice .

Another ac hievement for the C.L.C. netba ll teams was in the Y.N.A. knockout competitions. Three team s participated in the competitions; these comprised a sixth form open team, a fourth form open team and a fourth form junior team . All did extremel y well throughout the competitions, failing to make the finals by only one game.

Throughout second term the three divi sions of the school - senior school, middle school and junior school - took part in inter-house netball games. The final result s were: Marita 48 , Vincentia 45. Loyol a 37 , Aikenhead 3 I.

On account of bad wea ther the House Tennis m atches were postponed f rom first term to third term. Again weather held up play on numerous occasions and matches took far longer than a nticipated .

All four homes participated , each one having a squad from whom their players could be ta ken for each m atch . Two doubles and two singles matches were pl ayed for each match and different members of the squad could play in different matches. This enabled a greater participation by all girls concerned.

The results were take n on the games won in each match. The final resuJts were very close.

Loyola won the cup with 63 games. Vincentia was second with 60 games. Marita third with 55 games and last Aikenhead with 35 games.

NETBALL THE V.N.A. LIGHTNING PREMIERSHIP This Li ghtnin g Premie rship, held by th e Victorian Netball Association , revealed th e tru e characteri stic spirit of netball : a stron g sense of competition and an exciting e xhibiti on of skill.

One mi ght ask, was it really li ghtnin g? The Form 4 team , entered in the U 16 section, m ay we ll answer thi s in the affirm ative. Although the ultimate of success was not the outcome of thi s competition, we offered competitive opposition . Arduous tra ining turned into 3 wins and I loss, all of which were played with tru e C .L.C . spirit. We owe thank s again to tra iners and sideline pa rticipant s. wh o all spurred us on to win .

C.L.C. MAKES HISTORY AND CLAIMS ITS FIRST PREMIERSHIP A silver shield , to decorate the empty shelves (of previous unsuccessful years), was won by the Form 4 netball team . This achievement was the final outcome of continuous tra ining; a lot of fun , and a bit of bard work for variety. But the greater pa rt of our success lay in co-operating as a team, ea rnestly pointing o ut fa ults and reassurin g with plenty of encou ragement.

So it was as a smiling tea m th at we fini shed the season 2nd on the ladder, saving a few smiles for the victory which we were hoping was to be ours. Maybe we should have saved more, for we defeated Mercy College in the grand fin al, with a convincing win, 32-27, surprising ourselves and fulfilling our suppo rters' cheers.

SWIMMING

The C.L.C. Swimming Sports were held early this year on Friday, i st March , at the Greensborough Pool. After the House C a ptains drew for the house lanes the straight swimming events went into full swing. There was great excl.tement during the flat races and especi ally in the relays which followed. The girls greatly appreciated the help and organization of our staff members. Mrs. Cross was our trigger happy starter, with Mrs. Goodwin as our Marshal. Our chief judge was the keen-eyed Mrs. Searle, and Mrs. Potocnik and Mrs. Duane were our faithful recorders.

CELEBRATION OF FRANCE'S NATIONAL DAY The tricolour flag, long bands of blue, white and red streamers on the pillars on either side of the stage alld posters adorning the walls of the College Hall helped to create the atmosphere for the Assembly of July 15th , which opened with the singing of 'La Marseillaise'.

It was the occasion for celebrating the contribution made by France to our civilization throughout the centuries.

Brief accounts of outstanding fi gures in the fields of Art, Literature, Science and Religion were presented by Form IV pupils. Appropriate coloured slides added to the y alue of their very interesting talks.

The musical programme included a delightful rendering with mime

by Form II of 'Frere J acques' and 'Sur le Pont d'Avignon' under the direction of Miss Nicholls. ' II etait une Bergere' and ' L' Alouette' were sung with great enjoyment by Form JV. Scenes from Moliere's comedy, 'Le Malade lm aginaire', were excellently performed by students from different classes. The cast was as follows: Argan : C armel C ollins.

The celebration concluded with lhe singing of ' Nous Voulons Dieu' (We stand for God) with Mrs. Duane as accompaniste.

The novelty events seemed to b~ the highlight of the morning when the junior and middle school gallantly bHttled their way through the stormy, foaming waters on their makeshift boats and canoes, and the slightly overweight seniors drowned their poor carriers in the piggy back race. The daring young divers. also, received a chorus of 'oohs' and 'a hs' from a captivated audience.

The carnival was a success for a ll people concerned, not only a proud Aikenhead team: as the scores show lhat there were barely 20 pts. between each house score. This indicated a good concentrated team effort fr om all hou ses.

The squad of five girls who swam in the 'All Schools Swimming Com petition', which was held at the Olympic Pool on the 6th of April , receive our congratul ations. The girls were Megan Klemm , Ambra Rigoni, Patricia Busch , Ma rgaret Busch and Michelle Baker. The final s were reached in the three events for 14 years: Freestyle, Brea ststroke and Medley.

DRAMA-1974 Anyone who saw one of the performances given by the Drama group this year must agree that the standard of the group is the best it has ever been. In performances of 'I Have Five Daughters' and 'The Crucible', the Paradians and the C.L.C. girls have given their schools worthy representation.

It is fine to watch a perfomrnnce and enjoy it. It is even finer to be ab!e to participate in the play itself - as actress, stagehand or make-up girl. But no matter what your job is, the sense of team work makes it all worthwhile, because thi s is what the performance basically relies on.

One thing gained from Drama was the ability to work enthusiastically in a team with others. The atmosphere of familiarity, co-operation and communication made the plays the successes they were.

Drama gave one other important thing to the people who participated in it; through the team effort, the actors grew to know each other and many friendships were built. These friendships made hard work enjoyable, and made the trip to Ballarat an exciting climax to a year of hard but rewarding work.

SINGING/SPEECH / DANCING FESTIVAL Towards the end of third term a very enjoyable night was presented.

A group of Fifth Form performed an act of "The Importance of Being Earnest" . Form III Speech Choirs rendered the selections which obtained such hi gh marks in the Trinity College examinations.

The Drama Group, helped by a few members from Parade, gave a spa rkling performance of George Bernard Shaw's melodrama "Passion, Poiso n and Petrifaction''. Terry Guest was a suitably horrible villain a nd Mary-Rose Casey skilfully portrayed the vague heroine. Excellent parts were played by Stephen Smith, Melinda Robilliard and John Bredenwoord.

Tim O 'Shea was a very competent a nnouncer.

The rest of the programme was from Form l . They gave great variety as they treated us to the massed choir, smaller choral groups, colourful dancing on a circus theme, finishing with Jonah-M a n in shadow-box and choral si nging. Congratulations to a ll , especially Mrs. Casey, Mrs. Spain, Miss Downs a nd Miss Nicholls.

BANGLADESH FOOD APPEAL Much has been said a nd written abo ut the plight of those drought stricken in Bangladesh . As is obvious. in most cases, actions speak louder th a n words. During one of the quiete r di scussions flo a tin g round the tea table on Friday night emerged "the ide~:".

After getting permission from the right source, things were set up.

Posters were made a nd forms drafted. The forms were di stributed on the Monday afternoo11 after the helpful advice of Mrs. Hubbert. Things had to be done fast and we thought this might cause a stir but everyone, student s and str.ff, were really co-operative.

Forms were taken to classrooms, everything was moving, all th a t was le ' t was to complete the "forty-eight hours" a nd collect the money.

The forty-eight hours passed successfully a nd the money kept rolling in. By Friday a ~ ternoon . th ~ final tot a l of $254.00 had been reached.

This money was forwarded to the Catholic Relief Office in Melbourne and sent on to aid the people of Bangl adesh.

We would like to thank all those people who generously contributed to this appeal <o nd made it the success th a t it was.

MOTHERS' AUXILIARY

The display on India which the Form I girls produced was very impressive. Resea rch , id·e as and effort was needed to make it a successful exhibition. Our di sphy shO\\oed how the Indi a n people live.

There were m<ny sec tions to te ' l us abo ut it. Among these were Foods, Crafts, Religion. Castes and C hief Products. Girls brought samples of lndi a n arts and crafts: for example, a replica of the T aj Mahal , Indian caftans as well as some int ~re~ tin g Indi a n di ~fi ~ s.

The M o thers' Auxili ary has been very active during the yea r, holding monthly meetin gs and many small social gatherings. Their main social function for the year was the Dinner Da nce in August which was the most successful dinner dance the College has ever had . The mothers also helped greatly with the Family Festival in November.

daily recitation of the Rosa ry before sc hool, in a n attempt to carry out the wi shes expressed by Our Lad y to the c hildr~ n of Fatima which were: "To my the Rosa ry daily ''. and " Pray for the world" . The ir main purpose for its recitation was to ob tai n for the !!iris and teachers in the school those graces a nd blessin gs necessary to ·live a good chri stian life . This year the >e girls, now in Fo rm V, have continued th·e de'votion to increase the blessings on the sc hool. The Rosa ry was changed a t the beginning of October to the lunch hour so that more girl s could attend. ,When the D evotion first began, we had few girl s attending, but as the influence of these girls spread , the number increased. Having the devotion at lunch time has enabled many more girls to come a nd so the blessings on the school and everyone in it have increased.

The world today is in a worse state than it was when Our Lady appeared at Fatima, and so he r message is even more vital to-:l ay. We believe th at the da ily recitation o :' the Rosa ry must help the people of the world, and so we continue to pray for its conversion in a specia l way by reciting her Rosa ry each day .
