At C.L.C. Eltham

On Saturday, 14th August, 1971. a bout 2.000 peopk assembled a t the new Catholic Ladies' College a t Eltham , to assist in the Blessing a nd Opening of the school. The weather was such th a t it seemed to share the joy of all those who attended , for it was a beautiful sunny da y. The newly sown grass was just a ppea ring, a nd the tree s a nd s hrub ~ recently pl a nted ga ve promise of beautiful grounds i!l the future.

The present students of the College lined the drive in a guard of honour for His Grace, Archbishop Knox , who was to bless and offici a lly open the school. While the Archbi shop a nd accomp a nying priests were vesting , the girl s moved up the drive to form a group near the foundation ston e, so they co uld witness a nd ass i ~ t at the Blessin g. The stone was unu sual - a large boulder of na tu ra l rock in which was embedded a bron ze pl aque bea ring a n in sc ripti on readin g:-

CATHOLIC LADIES' COLLEGE Opened at C a thedral Pl ace, East Melbourne, 20th March , 1902, a nd tra nsferred to Elti1am, 29_!.h_March, 1971. The College was blessed and opened at Eltha m by the Most Rev. J . R. Knox, J.C.D., Archbishop of Melbourne, on 14th August, 1971 .

The prayers for the Blessing were re la yed to the ha ll where a large crowd had assembled . Fr. Jenkins, Parish Priest of Eltham, blessed Level 3 of the school , while Fr. B. Donoghue, former Chaplain of the College, blessed Level 2. The official party then proceeded to the hall while the sludents assembled in the corridor beside the hall. There were many people standing both inside and outside the hall.

On the stage with the Archbishop were Fr. Jenkins, Fr. Martin , Director of Catholic Education in ihe Archdiocese of Melbourne, M .M. Agnes, Superior General of the Sisters of Ch a rity , M.M. Ursula, Regional Superior of the Sisters of Charity for the southern States, Sr. Marie Joan Gough , Principal. Sr. Una McAllister, former Principa l of the College, Hon. Neil Brown , M.H.R ., Cr. Dreverman , Shire President o f Eltham, and Mrs. Dreverman. Mr. R. Stella. architect , and Mrs. Stella (an expag e five

student), Mr. Yuncken, Building Co ntractor, Mr. McM :!hon , President of the Fathers' Auxiliary, and Mrs. McMahon, Mrs. Breheney, President of the Mothers' Auxiliary, and Mr. Breheney, Mrs. A. Wi se (McNamara), Preside nt of the Ex-students Association, and Mr. Wise. Mr. McMahon introduced the official party and called on the various speakers.

Mr. Brown , who is the Libera l member in the Federal Par li ament for Diamond Valley , spoke in praise of the pro ject and showed concern for th e financial position of independent ~ch oo !s. Fr. Martin was th ~ next speaker and mentioned the enormous cost of th e building, and as~ ured th e audienc e th a t this is the sort of mon ey th at needs to b~ spent on school buildings in the present day. Of course, such money is not easil y forthcoming. Fr. Martin was followed by Cr. G . C. Dreverm an. who ex tended a v: ry warm welcome to the school in the Shire uf Eltham.

Finally His Grace. Archbishop Knox addressed the aud ienc ~. He spok e of harmonious rel atio nships between the Cat ho lic Education Office and C.L.C. Most of his remarks were ::iddrc s~~ d to the yo ung people, whom he praised for their initi ative. He co n-iders that they see problems in the world as they a re a nd th ~ n try to do someth ing about them. He is particu la rly impressed hy interest shown hy youth in the problem of the aborigines.

After the speeches the official party moved out of the hall to tour th e sc hool. The present student s acted as guide s for all in the enormous crowd who wished to see the sc hoo l. Afternoon tea was served in the convent for the official pa rt y and any Religious who were present. It was with th ank sgiving in our hea rt s tha t we fini shed the day - gratitude for all that had gone before at East Melbourne, and for the successful function of the day. And we had trust in the future of a sc hool th at nea rly died. but had come to a rebirth more strongly than before.

C.L.C. Diary TERM I FEBRUARY TUESDAY, 9th: Back to school - at East Melbourne, unexpectedly!

After everyone thought they had se·en their iast days at the old school. delayed construction a round the grounds at Eltham has caused postponement of the be2innin2 there until the end of March. R::iined all day. We had to wait until the 'sisters a rrived from St. Vincent's Hospital to get into the school.

WEDNESDAY, 10th: Still much sort ing out of new faces, incongruous modern ta bles and chairs in old classrooms. Sister Marie Joan , our new principal , is extremely busy with paper work, and the Eltham school.

THURSDAY, 11th: Coke machines notorious for unreliabilit y. Guarding and fixing them takes up all of Sister Maryanne's timeFRIDA Y, 12th: Forms Ill and V practised singing for the Speech Night -date set for March !st. Mi ss Armstrong "sporting" an engagement ring!

MON DAY. 15th: Voting today for Executive positions on th'! Student Counc il , to be announced on Speech Night.

TUESDAY, 16th : School Sport<; Captains voted for tod ay. Ann Reid general Sports Captain as well as Captain of Ma rita. 89•=> !

MONDAY, 22nd: Received fir st of the regular News Bulletins, telling parents things Sister Joan especially wants them to know.

TUESDAY. 23rd: Pa ncake Tuesday. Project Compassion boxes for all rooms.

WEDNESDAY, 24th: The whole school assisted at Mass at the Cathedral for Ash Wednesday.

THURSDAY , 25th: Marching practice, tod ay - unfortunately without music.

FRlDA Y, 26th: Over 90° . Under 12 heats run off down in th e gardens.

MARCH MONDAY, 1st: SPEECH NIGHT. This is really the last Speech Night to be held at East Melbourne .

The 1970 Higher School Certificate .students were the gut>sts of the evening.

Dean F . Chamberlin distributed prizes to all classes and Dr. R. Selleck addressed the parents and girls. Brother Francis' presence was a reminder of the trips to North Melbourne for science lessons with the boys there.

Sr. Marie Joan rt·ad the report , and after the distribution of tl-ie prizes. supper was se rved to the new ex-students a nd their parents. Because most of the equipment of the sc hool was to be found in boxes, cups, etc., were gratefully borrowed from St. Columba's Col lege, Essendon. Badfes were presented to the new Executive of the Student Council. Mrs. Spain is to be cong ratulated on the excellent si;1 ging of the prese nt students.

THURSDAY. 4th: Sister Theresia, whu has been in hospital for some time, will r·e turn to resume her mu sic lessons tomorrow.

WEDNESDAY, I 0th: Form St. Thomas More and St. Agnes visit the Musuem_ Collection in Matric room for flowers for Sister Theresia's Golden Jubilee.

THURSDAY, I Ith: First executive meeting a fter school.

FRlDA Y, 12th: House meetings and marching practice at lunch time.

MONDAY, 15th: Sister Claver back at school after a weekend of recuperation in Sydney to attend her sister's Golden Jubilee. Form 111 go to the Museum to study history of Australian art. etc.

TUESDAY. 16th: Form l St. Agnes and Form II St. Joseph go to Ancient Times House, where they enjoy a very instructive morning.

WEDNESDAY, 17th: Higher School Certificate history students see film on the Renaissance at Anderson Auditorium in th•; Dental Hospital.

Much laughter from Form 11 St. Joseph as they compose jokes and comic strips.

THURSDAY, 18th: Marching practice at lunch time. Form 11 St. Joseph visit the Herald Art Show in the Gardens.

FRIDAY, 19th: All Form !I's go to Parliament House. Mad last minute sports practice. Ribbons and programmes distributed. A very attractive cover on the programmes thanks to Mr. Davies, Joanne's and Gabrielle's father.

SUNDAY, 21st: SPORTS DAY - as seen by a Form lll girl.

C.L.C. Annual Sports were born with the College in 1902. Though they are held every year, there are always new records to make and the old team spirit to bring to life. This year the girls ran , shouted , won and

lost on the Parade College Ground , Bundoora. Marita, Loyola, Vincentia and Aikenhead all competed in the skipping, quoits, flat and relay races.

But only one team could win , and it was Marita's turn again. The "Blues" collected several cups and were placeq, second in the marching event. Cups were given out to individual runners who had starred in their particular age groups. Vincentia won the marching. In the Under 14 Inter-School Relay our team ran second.

MONDAY. 22nd: Assembly to congratulate us on the successful Sports. All prize-winner~ were congratulateJ publicly.

TUESDAY, 23rd: Practice now for St. Columba 's Sports on Sunday, 28th. Form l St. Thomas More visit Art Gallery.

WEDNESDAY, 24th: Excitement mounts as preparations are made for the move to Eltham . Form IT St. Joseph visit the A.rt Gallrry.

THURSDAY, 25th: All girls took belongings home.

FRIDAY, 26th: Some girls privileged to go to Eltham to receive tables , chairs, etc. For those at E:-.st Melbourne the clay was not as hard as we ha d expected. To keep us occupied we were shown a film in the hall - "Where Angels Go Trouble Follows" . The old bell was taken clown , to be a kee psake out at Eltham.

MONDAY. 29th: Another "plain clothes" clay like Friday. Day spent in glorious disorder, with everyone exploring. Our new school is superb, luxury appointments, most modern in Victoria! Correction : the Southern Hemisphere! Forms I and II - rather unwillingly, strange to sa y - had a holiday.

TUESDAY, 30th: Settled down to ·'work" . Timetable changed, to dismiss us at 3.15 p.m. As yet the electronic bell 1s not installed, so a "crier" runs along the corridors with a bell!

WEDNESDAY, 31st: All classes except Form VI are to eat in the Hall , which is absolutely enormous, built to seat 1,000 (or an indoor basketball court!).

APRJL THURSDAY, !st: Matrics given their Common Room on the second floor. Many typical April Fool 's Day tricks, e.g. one te acher in Form II Room 4 was told there was INK on the CARPET! FRIDAY, 2nd: The train the majority of girls catch to school was delayed half an hour this morning. Mrs. Evans, nee Websdale, a former Head Prefect and sister to last year's President of the Student Council, here to supply for S.M . Rita who has undergone minor surgery.

SATURDAY, 23rd: Some Form V students attended a performance of "Winterset" at the Viaduct Theatre, accompanied by S.M. Austin and S. Maria Therese. The Higher School Certificate Engli sh Expression students see "Summer of the Seventeenth Doll " which they are studying.

MONDAY, 5th : Those who saw "Summer of the Seventeenth Doll" on Saturday attend a Symposium.

TUESDAY, 6th: Parade boys accept invitations to our school dance to be held on April 30th. Full roll-call in Form V. First time this term! page nine

TUESDAY. 20th: Announcement that winter uniform will be worn from the first day of second term. All classes a nxiou s to try out the new heaters.

WEDNESDAY, 21st: Janina has a new way of putting on her raincoat - over her head with nea rly a ll- the buttons done up!

Everyone is excited at the prospect of two weeks in which to do " nothing" - if one feels th at way inclined. Form V girls, Elizabeth , Tessa a nd Jane. a ttend a guitar lesson to lea rn some new folk hymn s.

HIGHER SCHOOL CERTIFICATE GEOGRAPHY EXCURSION took place during the May holid a ys a nd was most enjoyable a nd instructive.

JUNE TUESDAY, I st: First day of winter - - suitably colJ. LIBRARY OPENED for Forms V a nd VI to use for study and to junior classes for borrowing, library periods, etc.

MATHEMATICS WEE~ commenced today with a displ ay in the M at hs Room of the students' work in various aspects of Maths. Pythagoras a nd Archimedes can have lunch using ma thematical cardboard "crockery" .

Ma th songs can also be heard on a tape. There are many games a nd puzzles to enterta in the different cl asses as they came in during their class Maths period . A circle tree by Lynette Dodman and Susa n Luttick of Form JT Room 4 called forth much admiration. Form Y's busy making up probabi lity problems.

WEDNESDAY, 2nd: Bas ketball team has new gold a nd white uniform.

Possibility that we will get a hot-drink machine. Form V Biology experiments are coming or. well. There are lots of fascinating moulds a nd b;1cteria colonies being produced on (what was once ca lled) food!

TERM II MONDAY, 24th: Return to school in winter uniform . Timetable is now arra nged for dismissal at 3.35 p.m. , so th at the train travellers now catch a late r tra in . General asse mbl y this afte rnoon. We are now a llowed out onto the concrete outside the classrooms - it's gre,!t. The basketball team starts warming up with exercises.

TUESDAY, 25th: The Form V Biology c lass was making SOUP today , and a certain girl happened to grab a rather hot container (out of the oven) with her bare ha nds .. .

EX-STUDENTS' DEBUTANTE BALL. Fifteen of the Form VI class made their debut with twelve ex-students. It was a very happy ni ght for a ll. The sisters came in time to see the prese nta ti on of the debs, who were presented to Mr. and Mrs. M. Wal sh.

WEDNESDAY, 26th: Mat rics on holiday recovering from the previous night. Form V 's were given the task of lookin g after the other classes at lunch time because of the ra in . They were it ll anxious about what would ha ppen, but a ll turned out well.

THURSDAY, 27th: Agreement today th at so me giris who trave l long distances wou ld be dismissed five minutes early to catch the early train.

Parade dram a group came today to discuss their ac tivities with Form V who were interested. These boys seem to be quite good in the d ra ma field.

THURSDAY, 3rd: S.R.C. meeting in Matric Common Room with Sr. Marie Joan present. Form V Chem. students did some copper-plating. today. The finished products lacked professional skill, out still resembled copper - even though it was a bit uneven. Grade 6 Class from Our Lady's Primary School visited us today to see the display in the Maths Room .

FRIDAY, 4th: Threatened train strike cancelled. Bad luck! The Form V Art Class have a test which everyone thought Sr. Marie Louise would kindly put off. Wonder how the results went? Basketball courts now have lines - unfortunately a poor girl happened to take a piece out of the wet part of the line when she stepped on it - the workmen were pleased.

MONDAY, 7th: Long awaited Caritas and Souvenir Edition arrives along with polio-vaccine forms' Basketball team to be congratulated on their 3-goal victory on Saturday. Form V class see Wuthering Heights in the city this afternoon . Good, and sad: some girls came out rubbing their eyes.

TUESDAY, 8th: Janine Brophy in a serious car accident during the weekend. Facial injuries - hospitalized for 6-8 weeks. Some people have been turning off heaters and they're very hard to light - isn't that so, Sr. Maria Therese? What happened to that half box of matches?

WEDNESDAY. 9th: FIRST MASS IN COLLEGE CHAPEL. This was attended by the Forms V and VI. A very nice chapel - the Stations of the Cross are beautiful. Fr. D. Jenkins celebrated the Mass which was sung accompanied by Mrs. Spain at the organ. Several of the staff were present.

Form V complained about the l\'1atrics drinking tea and coffee during Y.C.S. Meetings in their Common Room, so they decided to let them do likewise as long as they could get mugs. It was arranged to get them from the Staff Cafe Bar. Ten minutes later they were informed the jug was broken! No luck!

THURSDAY, 10th: Form basketball competition starts among Form I's. Form V's second para-liturgy today in honour of the Feast of Corpus Christi.

FRIDAY, 11th: First Sport lesson on basketball court. We wonder if the team playing against the school team would consider stopping now and then(?).

TUESDAY, 15th: Back again after a three day rest. Basketball team defeated by one goal on Saturday. Mother Agnes, Superior General of the Sisters of Charity , paid us a visit today.

WEDNESDAY, 16th: Roberta Varrenti ' drives Sr. Theresia to school from the convent this morning. Singing practice for Mass on Friday.

Form V's singing leaves a lot to be desired' THURSDAY, 17th: Some new faces in Forms I and III. Talk of a trip to Tasmania for the Form V's.

FRIDAY, 18th: FEAST OF THE SACRED HEART. POORMAN'S MASS IN HALL. Lots of goodies in different fornis were donated - in fact the response was most generous. Fr. Quinlan, S.J ., Novice Master, celebrated the Mass, for which the school sang unaccompanied. Again thanks to Mrs. Spain.

Matrics manned the office. In the middle of a chemistry experiment, a student was heard to say " Wait a minute, I've got to put my glasses on''!

THURSDAY, 24th: Raffle tickets sold for the Y.C.S.-record voucher.

We meet our new school chaplain, Fr. Ambro;:e Glyr.n , C.P. Form V French class learn how to sing " Happy Birthday" in French (it is strictly their own version). Physics students can do experimer.ts, but they just aren 't logical. Scarves a re becoming popular. A few girls wouldn 't part from them all day.

FRIDAY, 2nd: Y.C.S. meeting at lunchtime. Mat rics attend French play a t Melbourne University. Girls busy cleaning up rooms fo r vi sitors durin g the week-end - carpet sweepers a ll over the place. One room managed to ha ve three at one time.

MONDAY. 5th : Staff meeting at 10 o'clock. Basketball team won 43-17 on Saturday. There was nearly a forfeit as the opponents got lost on the way. Form V French class di sc uss "party" for July 14th. Sounds grea t! Form II meet college chaplain , Fr. Ambrose.

TUESDAY, 6th : Father Bishop ::ame to talk to Forms V and VI about Mass Media . He was very interesting, and everybody just gaped when he walked in dressed in a dark blue suit , light blue shirt, white tie a nd neat gold-framed glasses. Except for his gold cross on hi s lapel, he looked like C AR!TAS

a typica l well-dressed businessman. He also had a modern approach to hi s subject ma tter.

Form YI Biology students received two chickens each to tra in for an experiment. Biology room is very popular at the moment.

FORM V RJOLOGY EXCURSION. The venue was Watso nia Pond . After walking a bout It miles from the station, we reached the a rea , then wa lked about another :!- mile to the pond via a bout ten gates or fences . Anne D. discovered th at where the water was I inch below Janina 's gum boots, it was t inch above hers hence two wet feet , two wet socks and some soaked gum boots.

In the evening the Form V English class attended a performance of Macbeth in the city . Havin g found an underground car pa rk, a group, including one teacher and one parent , found so me stairs which they promptly used , much to the annoyance of the li ft-m an! The pl ay was very well done a nd enjoyed by all.

THURSDAY, 8th : Received Bulletin a bout Pa rent-Teac her Night for ~ chool in general. After Macbeth and the Excursion about ha lf of the Form V class decided they couldn 't ma ke it to school , so the o ther half struggled on , ha lf as leep, through the day's lesso ns. The Physics class we re huddled round the hea ter (full blast) for an ho ur, frree zing and wonderin g why they had cold feet , when a man came in to turn our pilot light on - the only air coming out was cold!

TUESDAY, 20th: Everyone saddened to hear th at S.M. Theresia passed away peacefu lly last night. She will be greatlv mi ssed. ParentTeacher Night for whole sc hool. Fr. Ambrose came today to discuss the Form V Retreat topic - "The Ri sk of Being a C hri sti a n" . Mr. Baigent, the producer of th e stage version of Macbeth, which Form V English class saw recentl y, came to discuss hi s version a nd M acbeth's character.

He is a fascinating person and managed to answer m any of our questions before we had the chance to as k them.

WEDNESDAY, 21st: This afternoon the Siste;·s, Matrics and some music pupils attended S.M. Theresia's Requiem at St. V incent's Hospit al.

It was a moving ex perience.

On Wednesday we ca me to sc hool ready for a Holy D ay of prayer.

Father Ambrose, C .P ., was our new school priest. He arrived at 9 o'clock loo king fresh as we did. He and Sister Eileen divided Room I into two grou ps, one group went to an interview room and the ot hers stayed in the classroom for a few questions o n Life and God. Then we reversed and went to th e other room a nd had a few different questions. After that it was recess. We kept with only our classmates and ta:ked over our discussions. After recess we went to singing practice for the M ass we were to have at the end of the afte rnoon . After th at we had a n early lunch ga thered around the laughin g Father Ambrose, then we showed him around ou r beau tiful school, while he smoked hi s pipe.

In the afternoon we went up to the Art Room to c!o some pa intings on what we had done and talked abo ut. Fa ther asked us what our paintings meant and judged them . Then we walked slowly to the sc hool chapel to celebrate the Mass. We watched Father Ambrose dress him self for it in robes of red and gold. All was in readiness now. Father and two girls walked down the aisle with two candles while we were sin gi ng. We had the guitars playi ng too. The Offertory Procession wa~ beautiful. After the Mass, we were a ll owed to go earlv. r arr ived home a nd told Mum about it. 1 think it was a very worthwhile day and it made me think more about God. Sister Eileen was very pleased with us. I feel we ought to ha ve a lot more Holy Days for our own goed .

Ambrose Gl ynn was in cha rge of the Retreat and ga ve us the th e me - 'The Ri sk of Being a Ch ri sti a n·· . We traveiled by bus fr o m Eltham to the Retrea t House a t Mili grove . The girls were in hi gh spirits a nd ta lked a nim a tedl y. Mill grove looked fine in the sun shine but at night the te mpe ra ture was at least I 0 degrees below that of Eltham which is not th e wa rme st place. Howeve r, we enjoyed sitting aro und the log fire di sc uss in g the theme of our Retrea t a nd allied topi cs.

The M as~ wa s the focal point of each day a nd Father Ambrose helped us in every way to understa nd better the meaning of the Mass by giving us the opportunity to participa te fully in the prepara tion of the liturgy so th a t it was rea lly our Mass.

All the girls agreed th a t we had grown into a community at Millgrove sha ring with each other in every way a nd getting to understand each other better.

The second day wa s bright a nd sunny and we were glad to sit in the sunshine expressing our ideas on C hri stianity in our p ~ intings which we then di scussed in groups.

We left Millgrove in the afternoon a nd the bus brou ght us back to the sc hool refreshed in body and soul.

port , a nd when we a rri ved there a man greeted us and showed us in . 1t was a very modern reception ce ntre and there were so me framed certifica te s o n the wa ll. The man o pened a door a nd we were startled by a series of loud noise s. These were ju st th e mac hin es go in g. We found that it was really a sign factory. There were many very familiar signs like traffic signs, and street names. A grea t number of individual letters and numbers were being made, and as the man gu ided us aro und he explained how each mac hine worked. It turned out to be a rather big factory with a great deal of equipment and machinery. The smell of paint still lin gered as we went through the quiet receptionist's office and into the bright sunshine outside.

WEDNESDAY, 8th : Form II Room 4 have a French luncheon in the hall. This was most enjoyable.

Today the Form V class with Sister Austin and Sister Maria Therese left for Tasm ani a.

FIFTH FORM'S TRIP TO TASMANIA. Tragic disappointment! All our hopes dashed to the ground! As the Princess of Tasmania edged her way through murky brown waters, we realized that Devonport was just as polluted as Port Melbourne. However the mi sty view of distant rolling hills more than m ade up for th at unfortunate discovery.

Travelling through northern T asJ111a ni a was a puzzling experience. This was most certainly not the countryside promoted as "a slice of Merry Old England" by the tourist bureaus. In fact it was far more reminiscent of

the drier areas found in Victori a. On reac hing the more so uthern di stri cts o ur faith in the touri st industry was restored ; the rese mblance to the Tasmania as is depicted in post cards was becoming more visible. Here were the lush green fields , vibrant stream s and neatly clipped hedges so much like England 's. Speaking of vibrant stre ams, Tasmania is a veritable sto rehou se of water; practica lly every turn in the road revealed great ex panses of lakes or rivers.

It was hard to believe th a t Hobart was a capital city. The vitality and buzz ex pected of such was completely absent. The average size of hou ses in the vicinity of the city was much la rger than ours in :1 similar a rea.

The view of a snow-cove red Mt. Wellington from our hotel was really breathtaking. On visitin g it everyone joined in a snow fight and a lthou gh a number ended up un co mfort ab ly wet , the ex peri ence was regarded as one of the trip's highlights. Other spectac ular scenic sigh ts included Cataract Gorge a t Launceston . The Blowhole, Tasman·s Arch a nd Devi l's Kitchen which were litera ll y terrific.

On the whole the weather was unpredictab le, for insta nce at Port Arthur (convict prison) hail was followed by immedia te sun shine! While wa lking through Porth Arthur it was hard to believe that human beings could be trea ted so ha rshl y and brutally amid such peacefully beautiful landscape. These ruins reminded us aga in of Tasmania's hi storica l ties with England. This aspect of the island state was continually brought to our a ttention as innumerable old buildings (many the product of convict labour) dotted the landsca pe.

Launceston provided us with an enjoyable afternoon, before leavi ng Tasmania . Oddly enough this city was more active th a n Hobart and many preferred it to the capital.

The most exciting part of our holiday was the trip home. Soaring above the clouds at a pproximately five hundred and sixty miles an hour is somethng none of us will ever forget. Well , a ll good things must come to an end and we soo n found ourselves with feet firmly planted on Victorian soil. We had a grea t lime in T asm ani a but it was good to be home.

Many thanks to Sr. Austin and Sr. Maria Therese who took us on the trip.

THURSDAY, 9th: H.S.C. RETREAT. Because of the move to Eltham, the Matric class was unable to have a Retreat early in the year as in past years. In the third term , on account of the proximity of exams, it was decided to have only a one-day retreat, at the school itself.

So, bright and early on Thursday morning, the Matrics gathered outside the chapel to await Father Heriot's arrival. M ass was to be the first item on the day's agenda. However, due to unfore see n circumstances - Father was unable to find the school, and consequently arrived half an hour late - there was a change in timetable.

After F ather's introductory talk , we saw a short film about Conscience.

It had a different approach to the topic which made it entertaining as well. This was followed by a short break .

CARITAS

Form V Then a di scussion was held on the film and its meaning in present clay situatio ns. The th eme for th e Bibl e service in the chapel , was friendship and lo ve - a n app ropriate o ne fo r gi rl s who are about to leave school and enter the ad ult business wor ld . The second film dealt with principles and aga in was fol lowed by an o pen discussion. Fa ther then proceeded to give a talk o n love. whi ch eve ryo ne th o ught was enlightening and a different ,-:ew of it.

As Father had been invited to have lunch with us in the Common Room, hi s lun ch was meant to be ordered. But through some mish ap, thi s had not been done. However, the nuns quickly came to the rescue with purty pies and fruit. and we m ade Father coffee in the Common Room .

The day ended a ll too soon with the celebration of Hol y Mass. Linda, o ur Pr·::sident , th a nked Father on behalf of us all for a marve llous spiritua l retreat and ec hoed our se ntiments say in g we regretted be ing unab le to have a longe r time as we thou ght Father was m a rvellous.

THE THREE LEG-A-THON - as seen by Jenni Keogh .

The three leg-a-than was quite exciting. It was run by Ann Thomas and Jenny Rutter and there were about thirty girls who entered the competition.

In the competition there were two girls to a tea m. Both girls had a leg each tied together with an old stocking or rag.

CAR ITAS

One lap was equal to three basketball courts. Judy was my partner a nd toget her we reached 26 laps. We came second to Anne Brinkkotter and Lisa Firczak who reac hed 29 laps. The first prize was a can of Coke and the seco nd was a can of fruity lemon ... I think these girls did a wonderful job, as from a ll the sponsors the two girls raised about forty dollars.

MONDAY, 20th and TUESDAY, 21st: FORM II ROOM 5 HAVE A RETREAT - as seen by Brenda Williams.

This was a thrilling experience. We had two priests, Fr. Moran and Fr. Dickson. The first day we sat and talked until lunch , which we had in the hall together. We listened to records in the afternoon and talked . The c lass had a· Mass to finish off the day and left before the rest of the school had finished their lessons. The second day we talked in the morning and had a barbecue lunch near the creek. We walked around and talked . In the afternoon we had a Penance Paraliturgy which a group prepared, and another group prepa red dicussion papers which the priests and SiHer complimented them o n. We finished our two day retreat by celebrating Mass.

We went home very tired .

SUNDAY, 26th: Bike ra lly run by Form II Room 5. This was an enjoyable " function " and the girls from Form ll who organized it are tn be congratul ated .

OCTOBER FRIDAY, 1st: Great excitement m Form II Room 4 - Kerrie Bates in print! Kerrie had written a pl ay a bout Christ revisiting the earth as man and it was printed in this month's Messenger. She even received a small fee . Congratulations, Kerrie!

MONDAY, 4th: A surpri se barbec ue in Form Ill Room 9 for Sr. Mar ia TI1erese's Feast Day. Despite a few burnt sa usages and a halfsmothered class, we all enjoyed ourselves.

FRIDAY, 8th: Form 11 Room 4 have a class Mass with Fr. Jenkins celebrating.

SUNDAY. 10th: SCHOOL PICNIC- as seen by Lynne Rosewall , of Form I, Room I. It was Sunday, I 0th of October a nd the C. L.C. picnic was on . We had packed a ll the meat and other necessa ries into the boot of the car. f was goi ng with the Brolans. We were read y and started our journey to the picnic grounds where it was being held . On the way we got lost like most of the families did, but we arrived eventu ally. We unpacked the meat a nd table and set up lunch. Mr. a nd Mrs. Brolan went over to the fire and started to cook some sausages while Therese and I took Therese's little siste r over to have a slide. After the sa usages were cooked we had lunch a nd went for a walk. When we got back we went to see and talk to the nuns. When we were ta lking Sister Eileen told us that the fathers were having races for the children. So off we went to see what we could win. Well , Therese a nd I won the three-legged race a nd for winning we got a n ice cream which was delicious. After th at we h ad a hunt which was very exciting, but alas we didn't succeed in winning that. Well , it was time to leave so we said goodbye and off we set for our long journey home to Eltham.

Form II Room 5 had a fete in the ha ll on th e 14th of October. Jt was organised oy Sharon Miller, Anne McClelland , Susan Joeng and Ann De Pellegrin a nd n helpe r Ma ree Frisby.

They sold there pop corn , toffee s (yu m!), honey fl a kes, a lucky dip, nlso a ra ffle for which first prize was a teddy bea r and second pri ze a blue vase. Also there was a novelty stall.

The y raised exactl y thirteen doll ars which will go tow ards C.L.C. Building Fund .

FRIDAY, 15th: Form , U Room 4 had a pilgrimage to the convent tod ay while carrying cups, tables, et c. They saw the chapel and parlour and wa lked around the outside. It was greatly enjoyed by all.

W E DNESDAY, 20th: ORCHESTRAL CONCERT- ns seen by a Form I. All the Form Ones went to a orchestral concert on the 20th of October. The buses arrived at 1.00 in- the afternoon ; by I 0 past we were leaving. T'wo Forms Ones (Rooms I and 2) arrived in time to go upsta irs in the Melbourne T ow n H a ll. The usua l 4.02 p.m. train from Eltham did not carry the usua l wcllgroomed uniformed Form Ill's (Room 8), for on thi s auspicious Octobe r 20th, twenty-five excited student s from C.L.C. were travelling to Healesvi lle for a C hri sti an Living Ca mp (for want of a better name). Some carried slee pin g bags, others tin s of ca kes - even teddy bears were to be seen.

The trip from Princes Bridge to Lilydale was uneventful if you ca n call twe nt y-five girls ta lkin g non-stop uneventful.

S. Marie Louise's description of a pleasa nt little w:ilk thro ugh country lane s turned out to be a lmost a death ma rch in rhe da rk l.! nd ra in so we were very relieved to fall into our new home ca lled Comely Bank a nd relax in front of television with a steamin g mug of coffee.

2.30 a.m.-there we were peacefull y sleeping' when we were rud ely awa kened by the no ne-too-swee t voice of S. Marie Louise. Ca n't imagine why she found it necessa ry to spea k with us then but as it was supposed to be a C hristi a n Living weekend, we forgave her for disturbing our beauty sleep.

Great fighting next mornin g as to who could do th ~ washing up - the unlucky ones who couldn't get a jo b spent an adventuro us hour exploring the property, getting bitten by the clog, picking wildflowers, playing record s or performing high jumps down the veranda h steps.

When Father a rrived at 10 a.m. we knew busi ness was about to begin and in no time we were engrossed in a di sc ussion on th e C hurch . Most of the aftern oon was spent prepa rin g for the Mass which we had in th e little wooden C hapel situated in the centre of th e 3rouncl s. Afterwards we enjoyed a ba rbecue by the river side.

Just in case we had thou ght things were gettin g Juli , Wilm a dec ided to get a sprained a nkle but with twenty-five nurses and •.:;ne would-be doctor the. patient was soon tucked into bed while we returned to the main room for a film on Penance which reduced all of us (except Father) to tears.

The to pic for Friday was Jesus C hrist-God and Ma n. The " Fish Bowl Discussio n" method was used (for th e unenlightened thi s is a foo lproof method for letting everyone ha ve their say). Friday's Mass took pl ace in the open air - o ur guitarists play ing "Shout from the hi ghest mountai n" was quite a ppropriate for o ur setting.

A hurried lunch . a frantic tidy up , rel ay trips to th e station in Father's ca r (much more comfortable th an our trip up) and there we were on o ur little diesel again bound for civilisation.

CAR!TAS

Room 9 Room 9 went to the Blessed Sacrament Fathers' Monastery in Templestowe. Some of the mothers offered to take us to and from the monastery .

On Thursday, we had a session then morning tea. Then another session and lunch. Durin.g lunchtime, we were able to walk around the Monastery grounds. Most girls went down to the "Swing Bridge" under which the Yarra passes. After lunch, we made posters about love, the theme of our retreat. At about 2.15 we had a Mass in the Chapel, followed by afternoon tea . Then we went home.

On Friday, we had a session, then morning tea. After morning tea, we had interviews and Confessions with Father. At lunchtime, we went down to the "Sw ing Bridge'' again. Then we had a Mass in the Chapel. The theme this day was friendiship.

WEDNESDAY, 27th : Form II Room 4 celebrated a Paschal Meal today at Christian Living time. This was followed by a re-enactment of the Last Supper and the climax will be tomorrow when we have a class Mass wit h Fr. Ambrose, our chaplain.

FRIDAY, 29th: The Mothers' Auxiliary held a very successful Dinner Dance in the College hall.

NOVEMBER MONDAY. I st: We celebrated the Feast of All Sa ints with a Mass in the hall for the whole school. The celebrant was Fr. Philip, C. P .

At playtime Debbie Green of Form II Room 4 held a cake stall to rai se money .

WEDNESDAY. 3rd: We have lunch in the grounds for the first time today.

MONDAY. 8th: FLOODS! - as seen by C hristine Wa lters of Form II Room 5 Funny though it may seem our school wa s nea rl y in the mid st of a flood.

There had been rain falling non-stop lhro ugh the wc ~ kend. There were warnings th at the creek, running ha lfway round our school, ma king a border, was going to overflow. Little did we realize th at the water would flood the lower levels of grass a round our school. Many of the girls were hesitant abo ut coming to sc hool and stayed home.

The bridge th at crossed the creek which had overflowed was covered by a foot of water. The creek lowered its level the ;iext day a nd was half a foot below the bridge. The bridge was still unsafe so the girl s travelled the long route to and from school in a bus.

The next day proved to be le ~s disastrous as the creek had gone down considerably .

FRIDAY. 12th : Last day at school for the Form VI girls. Weird sights were seen as they dressed themselves in football jumpers, etc. At assembly they were farewelled and Linda Sim spoke feelingly to the rest of the school.

MONDAY, 15th : GRADUATION. The twenty students of the H.S.C. class made hi story for C .L.C. when they attended the first Graduation Night of its kind ever to be organized for the Matriculation candidates, on 1 5th November. The venue was the spacious College Hall , which was suitably a rranged for the occasion.

Each girl could invite four guests, so there was quite a happy gathering with parents, friend s, a nd teachers, present and past. Opening the Cere~ mony, Miss Joanne Davies, Vice-President of the S.R.C., welcomed all and spoke of the very pleasant years she and her classmates had spent at C.L.C. She mentioned Sr. Claver who is so much pa rt of the College, and three students who had passi;d their entire school life at C .L.C. - Chris McKenzie, Michelle Saccardo and Roberta Varrenti . Sr. Ma rie Joan, College Principal, remarked that in her brief association with this H.S.C. class, she had found a true College spirit and example for the other students to follow . In her address, Sister Una told of her long association with these girls, her pride in them as young adult s, and expressed the wish that they may be always faithful and strong :o a ll th at C.L.C. had given them in their formative years. As Sister Mary Austin presented the girls to receive their Graduation Ce rtificates from Sister Marie Joa n, eac h student came on to the stage, forming a se mi-circle. Miss Linda Sim , President of the S. R.C., then ihanked the Sisters, teachers, parents and a ll who had contributed in any way to the success and ha ppiness of the class, and hoped that all would live up to the high idea ls placed before them .
