THURSDAY, 13th: For the enterprising ones with an eye to the future, there a re typing classe> for Leaving a nd Matric girls. The typing is not a subject , howeve r, a nd h<1s to be undert a ken during free periods.

FRIDAY , 14th : On ly the second week of the yea r, but oh , are we looking forward to the week-end . Even a new routine seems old after only a short while. But " with brave hea rt s by toil un affr ighted" we'll slog on.

FIRST TERM FEBRUARY TUESDAY, 4th: Bac k to school amid the mighty groaning of m any .

There is much rush and disorganization. Welcome to C .LC.'s way of life to the four new teachers, Sister Maria Therese, Sister Mary Aloysius, Mrs. Jackson and Miss Lewis-Williams.

WEDNESDAY, 5th: By now we have met all our subject teachers, except for Matric. Geography. We 've even received a rather large slab of homework. There's nothing like starting the year's work early. Both Sister M ary Helen's and Miss O'Grady's presences are sadly missed .

THURSDAY, 6th : All forms vote for their class and team captains.

But (gasp!) the Prefect System has been abandoned. Instead there is a Student Council, comprising the whole Matric. class. Today, Ma rgaret Chee! was elected President, Carolyn Weir Vice-President, Susa n Pickering Secretary, Josephine Tesoriero Treasurer. There are three committeesSport, headed by Veronica Cosgriff; Social and Drama, Pat Canavan; a nd Debating and School Magazine, Ma rga reth a Visser.

FRIDAY, 7th: Perhaps the first reaction to the Student Co uncil is one of insecurity. Instead of only 9 girls, the school has now 33 girls on the look-out for trouble. So watch out! Today we had our first First Friday of the month Mass.

SATURDAY, 8th: Although not a sc hool day , today deserves mention .

This morning our families were invited to a Mass in the school ha ll, offered to obtain God's blessing on thi s new school year and to ask His help.

2nd Week MONDAY, 10th: Our first Monday at school so far. Today the work and homework begin in earnest. Many resolutions to work ha rder this year than last are made, but how long will they be kept? It seems many of us need constant reminding.

TUESDAY, 11th : Bad habits already? I wish those girls would stop "pinching" those peaches off the trees! They're leaving none for me!! The Matrics had their fir st Geography lesson today at the Scholastic Education Centre in the city. Novel atmosphere, especially with those few boys, but nevertheless hard work . Miss Sijmons, who taught the subject last year here, is teaching our girls.

WEDNESDAY, 12th: Hardly any lessons for Matrics. This is a sad day. Veronica Cosgriff's father died last Monday and the funeral is tod ay.

May we expre~s our sympathy tu Veronica and her fami ly. The Matrics went to the funeral to represent C.L.C.

3rd Week

MONDAY , 17th: We found we had lost four Matrics today . Teachers' College has claimed them. Anne Dobson is now leader of Sports Committee.

TUESDAY, 18th : Rehea rsa ls for Speech Ni ght a re now in full swi ng.

Some lessons a re interrupted or even " wiped o ut" which is regrettable, but who rea ll y mind s if the end result is a successful performance.

WEDN ES DAY , 19th : Le;\ving girl , Olga Haddy, has been back at school a day now, following her week's absence a fter a car accident. Olga has some plaster o n her chin covering a stitched gas h a nd , despite being plagued with enquiries, is "feeling fine , thank yo u".

THURSDAY , 20th: Speaking about " wiped out" lessons, Speech Night aga in took its toll tod ay, as th e progra mm e see ms rather ragged. The heat is oppressive and everyone's ne rves are o n edge, which doesn't help at all.

FRI DAY, 2 1st: A hot night followed by a n even hotter day. Speech Night struck aga in and a ll of those jewels will need a lot of polishing up before they rea lize their full value. Congratul ations to Tricia Canavan though for ab ly ta kin g over Pistol from Michele Turner. Micki , unfortunately, is very ill with pneumonia a nd a col lapsed lun g. Get well soon, Micki .

4th Week MONDAY , 24th: Tonight 's a lmost des perate. Rememberin g rumoured , for th e first time in a llowed them to go without their

TUESDAY , 25th : Yesterd ay we were dismissed at 3.05 p.m. in order to prepare for Speech Ni ght. Today we were allowed till the second period to arrive in o rder to "get over" Speech Night. The generally held opinion was th at the concert part of the ni ght was short , sweet and very good.

Bishop C ullin ane gave out the pri zes and we were very happy that His Lordship was a ble to officia te. Co ngra tul ation s to Judy Reeves, Dux for 1968. Our popul a r ex-Head Prefect , Marga ret Gilbert , brought tears to some eyes as she spoke on behalf of he!· cl ass. A most successful evening.

WEDNESDAY, 26th: Although not mentioned before because the Speech Ni ght took precedence, today is th e day of o ur swimming sports at the Fitzroy pool. This eve nt is completely o rga ni zed by the Sports Committee and they have lea rnt quite a lot abo ut organization-the b ard way!!

7th Week MONDAY , 17th : St. Pa trick·s Da y - a holiday for some, but not for us. Our response to the challenge 0f Saturday's m arch was commented on , so now we strive to m arch in pri ze-winning fashion for the Sports.

TUESDAY , 18th: Both Sister Un a ::i nd Sister Colombiere superintend o ur figure marching a nd , although a bit rough, it is "coming along" .

Shush-sh-sh - no one around to hea r us? - Good . - Disc ussion on the (dare I say !t?) dance has gone undergro und' WEDNESDAY, 19th: The Studen t Council 's Badges arrived tod ay .

Very natty a nd distinctive - with blue book, white lilies a nd the rest in yellowy-gold. And being snapped up like th e cheapest thin gs m a ba rga in sale - which they weren 't!!

THURSDAY, 20th : Meetings, a nd more meetings. The four Houses held separate meetings at lunchtime re the Sports. Therefore. forced postponement of Y.C.S. gro up discu ssions. Vi cious plot to also ha ve Sport Committee meeting failed, th a nk goodness, but the Executive meetin g after school wlil go on as sc heduled. Anyone selling a 25-hour day?

FRIDAY, 21st: Last minute prepa rati o ns for Sports Day. Already the rivalry - though of a different type - "the red ribbon is brighter and a nicer colour th an the blue!" A gentleman from the government offices opposite rang on beha lf of his co-workers to congratulate us on our figure m a rchin g. Rather pleased a bout thi s, aft er a ll our hard work.

8th Week MON DAY, 24th : First time in e'eve n yea rs - Loyola won the sports.

Congratulations! Vincentia took the ma rchin g cup and , boy , did th ey deserve it! C.L.C.'s main effort was " runner-up" in the inter-school events - - St. Columba's ta kin g mo st of the trophies. Thank s to the Sisters, the parents who organized a nd th e girls, both C.L.C.'s and other school s', for a great afternoon .

TUESDAY, 25th : You still see some of those yellow (ugh!) ribbon s around . One day of celebration is grud gin gly allowed and is bad enough for riva l teams, but TWO days - th a t is a bit mu ch.

WEDNESDAY, 26th : Four dollars was collected from the 5c-a-head dance at lunchtime . But for a while, the music was n't loud enough until - -- - - - Many Matrics went to see "Hedda Gabler" at Me lbourne University last ni ght , so more music, since they stayed at school for tea, but thi s time the gentle, soothing notes were wafting into the conven t.

Can't understand why we were told to turn it down .

THURSDAY, 27th : '" Hedda Gabler" must be the funnie st comedy around at the moment - Wh at's th at you sa id? - It's a Drama - Oh , excuse me . Religion lessons with Sister Ma ri a Therese a re just something else; new ideas, informa l atmosphere, rea lly great. Tapes, tod ay, abo ut prayer. " Dull ," you say. No fe a r!

FRIDAY, 28th: Once it was "Chopsticks", day a fter day. Now , it see ms "Greensleeves" is the only tune that is played on St. Thom as More's piano. Eeek, watch out! Culture is slowly seeping into C. L.C.!!

Speaking of culture, but of a different type , those crystal things in the Science room that just seem to, well , grow. It seems a bit (shudder) eerie.

9th \-\·eek MONDAY, 3 lst : "Rosemary's Ba by", for Matrics a nd Leavings .-: fairly good movie that was just a bit too fantastic; still it was very enterta ining a nd will give us much to ta lk a bout - successful fund ra iser, too - $28 profit. Sour note - not one trophy was brought back by C .L.C. from St. Columba's Sports on Sa turday .

APRIL TUESDAY, Jst: A Lea vin g debate, "That the Student Co uncil is preferab le to the Prefect System ", wa s held today. The government won.

WEDNESDAY, 2nd: Sister Una a nnounced today that the gymnastic classes will begin the Wednesday a fter Easter - a new experience to look forw a rd to. Sister a lso told us we will begin wearing winter uniform th a t sa me week.

THURSDAY, 3rd: H a lf-hour periods to get as many in as poss ible.

Why? Because we break up for Easter tod ay ! And we reall y need the short break from routine - the strnin is beginning to tell!! Ha ppy Easter.

10th Week WEDNESDAY, 9th: Bac k to the gri•1d. Just before Easter, the Grade 6 girls were ra ffling a n egg to raise money to help buy the students' record pl aye r. Grea t work , girls! $5.30 was raised. The Matrics' efforts have brought some money in but we sure do need more!

THURSDAY. 10th: The Ma trics went on a " live-in" retreat at Ave Ma ri a last Tuesday night, and they a re due to go home tonight and return to sc hool in the morning. Gym , yesterday , was a new experience, as o ur aching bones a re telling us. Strenuous but great, just the sa me!

FRIDAY, 11th : Lea vin g girl , Anna Quagliato, is lea ving school today since her family is going to America , probably to stay. Goodbye, Anna , and gcod luck . Those wonderful Grade 6 girls have done it aga in! Another ra ffl e - for a teddy bear - brou ght in $5 .60 for the record player fund!

11th Week MONDAY, 14th : Vocation week , a nd Mass in the hall this morning.

Winter uniform tod ay, too . For a change, it was cool enough to wear it!!

But some girls forgot to wear it, or else did not know they had to - what with weddings a nd things' Anyway , re>'t'olution - it too has been shortened!

TUESDAY, 15th: We' re still recovering from the shock - a day with nothing extraordinary to report! , WEDNESDAY, 16th: Many a hea rty la ugh a t classmates today- until we ourselves ha d to do those tumbles a t f!y m . While we wear shorts, the need for leg exercising seems obvious. The school acquired a new projector - very nice; but, oh, so complica ted , eh , Sister M a ri a Therese?

THURSDAY, 17th: C.L.C. has done it again! The Ca tholic Drama Festiva l entry was only just sent off in time. Now a ll is rushed because it was left to the last minute. Well , not quite; the Festival isn 't until August!

Would you believe, if the da nce could go further underground , it would?

Three weeks to go and still nc ba nd!

FRIDAY, 18th: The squeeze is on again! Leav mg a nd Matric exams in a fortnight though some other forms begin ea rlier!! Now we find out how much we know - or should know! Have I a lot of work to plou gh throu gh!

12th Week MONDAY , 21st: Student Council Executive received their pockets back from H a ley's on Frida y last! Not too showy, yet di stingui shing the girls of the Executive and their extra duties a nd respon sibilities.

TUESDAY, 22nd: Welcome change . We still get "Sink , sink red sun" but not the whole lesson , th a nk goodness! Now we listen to the "Sounds of Silence" a nd try to find a n agreeable pitch for girls to sing.

WEDNESDAY, 23rd: Gym is getting harder - and don 't we know it; ooh , our aching backs! The ma t's a bit of a problem , too . Would you believe, it moves out from unde r you in the most disarming way!!

THURSDAY, 24!h: Tricia would tell you she doesn' t care who they are, because of a ll the misunderstandings. But we now have a band for our da nce, at last, for $53, thanks to Miss Lewis-Willi a m s. Anzac ceremony today, and some Form Ill girl s represented C.L.C. and pl aced our wreath on the shrine.

FRIDAY, 25th : Anzac Day - Holid ay!!

13th Week MONDAY, 28th: Mother Gene ra l has been staying a t our convent for a few da ys, a nd tod ay she honoured us by vi siting the va rious classes and speaking to the girls. Other forms a re now bringing in money ra ised for the record player fund .

TUESDAY, 29th : Father Reilly S.J . came to spea k to us today. The Indian Government expelled Father from Indi a some eighteen months ago.

However, before hi s expulsion, F a ther ha d spent twelve years at Biha r a nd he had m a ny experiences to tell us abo ut. We th a nk Father for hi s enlightening talk. Executive badges a rrived; a bit showy , but we like them .

WEDNESDAY, 30th: Many replies to the invita tion s to our dance have come in. Ve ry encouraging for it seems our invitations are in demand. Invita tions from other schools to their da nces ha ve a lso come in.

They are snapped up pretty quickly , too!

MAY THURSDAY, I st: Geogra phy girls had their exam yesterday at the Schol ast ic Education Centre. L a ughter was hea rd as they returned and we couldn't understa nd it. Then we re alized - it was the result of shock!

FRIDAY, 2nd: Speaking of shock , the Matrics had Expression and History today, a nd the Leavings had English a nd Germ a n/ Physics.

14th Week MONDAY, 5th: More exa ms - Math s a nd French / Art for M a tri cs; Geog ra phy / C hemi stry for Leavings.

TUESDAY, 6th: Free morning for M a trics, but Latin / Biology in the afternoon , while the poo r Leav ings had French / Art first a nd Biology in the afte rnoon as well.

W E DNESDAY, 7th: The last exam , Literature, this morning for Ma trics. Then home for a well-earned rest. The Leavings went to see " Romeo and Juliet" thi s afterno on after having their las t exam, History I Maths II, in the morning. Since it was too time-consuming for the Matrics, our entry in the Ca tholic D ra m a Festival has been withdrawn.

THURSDAY, 8th: Last ni ght, M a rga retha Visser competed in " Youth Spea ks for Au stralia" . She didn 't win but she was spoken of favourably.

There were supposed to be norm a l lessons tod ay , but our free periods were spent deco ra tin g the two ha lls for tonight's da nce. 1t did occur; after a ll th a t trouble , th e dance really ha ppened .

FRIDAY , 9th: The da nce was great last night; 'The Dee-J ays" (the band) did us proud a nd everyone -seemed in a ha ppy , funny mood , making it a lighthearted, enj oya ble ni ght. This morning numbers of Ma trics and Leavings showed up to clean up the hall , as well as two boys wh o, un asked ,

1st Week TUESDAY, 27th: That was some holiday, eh, Ma tric s? For the rest of the school as well , no doubt. But now it's back to the grind and those reports might influence thi s term's work somewhat! Let's hope so, for the better., WEDNESDAY, 28th: Old Collegi a ns' Debuta nte Ba ll last night - the Debs. were beautiful a nd the evening most successful. Most of our Sisters are in their new ha bits a nd does it ma ke them look young - like postulants, would you believe?

THURSDAY, 29th: Already routin e has gotten bac k to norm al - how depressing! It's ra inin g as well , which doesn't help.

The Form Ill 's a nd Form !Y's were given a ta lk by Father Cros by, the Co lumba n priest who wrote "Pencilling Prisoner", and who is returnin g to Korea soon. The Lea vin gs began their grooming course a t lunchtim e with Mrs. Baker a nd Mrs. Newton from the Ba mbi Smith Modellin g College. Tonight the pa rents' a nd teac hers' meetin g a bout Ma tric girl's will be held . T a lk a bout bu sy!

TUESDAY, 3rd: Interestin g Ma tric Litera ture lesso n tod ay - "The Grea t Gatsby" , one of our text s, had been made into a film a nd it was shown on T.Y . from 12.30 till 2.00 p.m. - pleasa nt change.

WEDNESDAY, 4th: No dancing today - a nother change - as well as no Geography for M a tri cs . Miss Lewi s-Williams ha s left our te ac hing staff a nd is replaced by Mr s. Robinso n. A hagga rd looking Mar len e stagge red in from gym after "flattening 3 girls" while trying to do 5 " leap-frogs" in a row' And you should have seen those 3 girls'!

THURSDAY, 5th: Para liturgy a nd Benediction for the sc hool in honour of the Feast of Co rpu s C hri sti . Matrics had a nother T .Y. lesso n - "Cha ucer's England" .

FRIDAY, 6th: First Friday Mass , o ur fir st for thi s term. The inquiry into the Rose bud affair ha s been completed sa ti sfac torily. The week s a re a lre ady beginnin g to drag by - it see ms to take years for the week-end to ar rive!

3rd Week MONDAY , 9 th: Back to school already? As I sa id , week-ends ta ke a long time coming, but, gosh , don 't they fly past! This week is Courtesy Week - a subtle hint , maybe? Well , we' ll see; maybe we need more th a n a hint.

TUESDAY, 10th: Yesterday ' ~ assembly, at which we were told some of the points of courtesy that we don't use, must have left some impression.

Even I notice it. See, we can do it; we just forget sometimes!

WEDNESDAY, 11th : Courtesy Week activity: lunchtime debate, "That we ourselves are responsible for any lack of courtesy that we are shown".

Another debate in Form IV "That courtesy is dead" . Forms I , III and IV went to an orchestral concert this afternoon. Marlene fared a little better at gym today -completed her "lea p-frogs" successfully, only to be felled by someone else!

THURSDAY, 12th: We were to have a guest speaker today about manners and courtesy, to round off Courtesy Week; but, unfortunately, the guest was unable to come, and the talk has been set forward to next Thursday. Suspiciously, the three noisiest Matrics were absent today. Did we miss them? Not likely; for a change, we had a chance to express our views'! Marcellin dance tonight.

FRIDAY, 13th : Unlucky day, so they say. Not for Matrics - those three are still a way! Since it was the Feast of the Sacred Heart, the school went to Mass at the Cathedral. 1t was a Poor Man 's Mass and the congregation gave food and clothing.

4th Week MONDAY, 16th: Queen's Birthday - holiday!

TUESDAY, 17th: Freezing temperatures and below, this morning.

And it didn't seem to get much warmer during the day either! Those heaters must be ca pable of producing a little more heat, surely!! Career films in the hall at lunchtime to help us choose for our future .

WEDNESDAY, 18th: Margaret Cheel, our lucky president, was C.L.C.'c representative at a luncheon today. The Victorian Rotary Club had organized it as it is Youth Week this week. There were representatives from schools and colleges, clubs and organizations from just about everywhere. THURSDAY, 19th: Our guest speaker did come today; Mrs. Patchell gave a very informative talk on manners and their desirability and even necessity.

FRIDAY, 20th: Our second slow news day for this year - nothing to report. Any more days like this and I'll be out of a job.

5th Week MONDAY, 23rd: Dreaded day - Mantoux test for T.B. The doctors were helpful but that doesn't lessen the horror, I , for one, have for injections - Ugh! You know, we ought to get the rest of the day off after moments of such extreme tension!!

TUESDAY, 24th: Well, those injections certainly are a talking piece - whether they have "come up" or not! Singing lessons with Mrs. Spain were lifted a little by our hearing the Viennese Boys' Choir recording of wh at that song should sound like. Oh, well!

WEDNESDAY, 25th: The torturers c«me back again today to check the results of their last gruesome effort. Mine had come up, so l was one of the lucky ones; but, oh, the poor other wretches - Yecch' Gym was fun , too(?), trying to shield a sore arm, or leg, or both!

THURSDAY, 26th: T.V.'s "Peopte in Conflict" as part of a religion lesson; with Sister Maria Therese, you never know wh at to expect! Sister Colombiere, too, effects surprises. She took the Leavings to Kew Cottages to let them see social work in action.

FRIDAY, 27th: Another folk Mass with the Academy in the Cathedral.

You know, when a Mass has folk songs in it , it becomes more personal to young people or to those who feel young. I enjoy them as do, l think , most of the girls - although the method of keeping time with the guitars , has to be improved!

6th Week

MONDAY, 30th : Rita Muccio came back today to conclude her story of the beginnings of the lay apostol ate. She also told us a lot about "Gen" (New Generation) movement.

JULY TUESDAY. Isl: Four a pplication forms to a week-long holiday live-in seminar dealing with Matric Expression books - came from the Grail Education Centre. Of these, three were quickly sna pped up by the noisy trio. I know of three mothers who will have very relaxed attitudes during that week!

WEDNESDAY, 2nd : Although l haven 't mentioned it before , Anne Dobson is doing a great job in organizing the basketball teams and matches, in conjunction with Sister Rita . Keep up the good work , Anne!

THURSDAY, 3rd: C .Y.A. Sunday on the 6th and Blanquita has been doing a marvellous job in organizing the tickets for the supper and dance after the mass. Quite a few C.L.C. girls are going and the message is: have a good time.

FRIDAY, 4th: Y.C.S. Ecumenical Night tonight - "You are the body of Christ". Last year's effort was most successful and , this year, everything has been better planned and organized.

7th Week MONDAY, 7th: Last Friday ni ght was a credit to Sister Colombiere and the tim e and effort she had put into it. Our guests were wonderful a nd entered into the spiri t of discussion very well - very successful and somewh at inspiring. Sister Theresia has bravely stepped out in her new habit for the first time in public today . 9th Week MONDAY. 21st: Y.C.S. Week- and the week-end was one of the better experiences. Mass for the school today to begin Y.C.S. Week and the Y.C .S. badges were given ·Jut. Hi storic day - man's first step on the moon , and we spent the best part of the day watching the direct telecast.

TUESDAY, 22nd : Blast-off from the moon's su rface at about 4 o"clock thi s mornin g. Talent quest in the hall at lunchtime - Christine Beasley won, of course. Congratul at io ns, Chris.

WEDNESDAY, 23rd: Apollo 11 is safely returning to earth , though there is still a long way to go. Record session for Y.C.S. Week in the lunch-hall was a great succe ss - maybe beca use th e tuck~hop was open only to those who went. Anyway, our record player does a terrific job. Cold , wet, windy, wintry weather.

THURSDAY, 24th : The past few days and today have been our first real taste of wintry weather - <i nd it"s ghastly! Two basketball matches, even with teachers in the teams , were played to find out who were the best players - Mrs. Jac kson found out, much to her dismay, just how many muscles she has, that she hasn't used for so long.

FRIDAY, 25th : To round off Y.C.S. Week , instead of the usua l revue , we were shown a film on the love of a girl who renewed the faith of a despa iring m an while she herself was dying - a film th at really forced you to reali se what you could do , if you only made the effort.

10th Week MONDAY, 28th: Assembly, and a talk and slides-session given by exstudent, Catherine McArdle, on the three-month st udy course she did in Germ any last Christmas. Things like th at really make you want to get on.

TUESDAY, 29th : You know , the two Education Nights are next week , Thursday and Friday. Gee, that explains those strained faces. Another piece of news for the Matrics - Expression exam next Thursday week it's frightening the way exams sneak up on you .

WEDNESDAY, 30th: Well , best wishes and good luck to the Form I V's - they are sitting for their Commonwealth Scholarship exam tod ay and tomorrow. With our praye rs and their undoubted intelligence, we know our Form IV 's will do well.

WEDNESDAY, 10th: Routine doesn't change much - only second day back and we still have a gym lesson - and a ll exercises! But it doesn 't hurt so much any more because we are getting used to it.

FRIDAY, 12th: Father's and D a ughter's Night tonight. The response this year was quite good a nd everyone is looking forward to an enjoyable evening.

2nd Week MONDAY, 15th: And another full week stretches out before us. A certain teacher I know is becoming quite disturbed by what she considers our poor attend ance at classes. Anyway, the result of this was trite remarks on reports; and the result of that will probably be better attendance; maybe, she hopes!

TUESDAY, 16th: G ay lene Watts was absent yesterday. Her story on Sunday ni ght she looked at a ll the work she doesn't know - and fainted! Funny , I feel th at way, too, most of the time. Do you?

WEDNESDAY , 17th: Sister Genevieve is becoming rather irate about the Matrics abse nt from her French lessons. Many teachers are complaining about the same thing, rn the attend ances will have to improve.

THURSDAY, 18th: The double Religion lesson for M atrics today was ta ken by a Mr. Hamilton , S.J . His methods of instruction are different from those of Sister Mari a Therese, but interesting nonetheless. Anyway, Mr. Hamilton will be seeing us every week from now on.

FRIDAY, 19th: End of the week! It's really amazing how tired we all become a bout this time of the year.

3rd Week MONDAY, 22nd: On top of the usual Mondayitis, today we also had rain - heavy rain! Tennis matches had to be postponed but school went on as it always does, unfortunately' TUESDAY, 23rd : Sister Una is more than usually busy these days interviewing the mothers of next year's Form l's - 80 of them , in fact.

WEDNESDAY, 24th: And the third (and, I hope , last) no news day.

Nothing unusual to report at a ll . . . (although that's an unusual fact in itself).

THURSDAY, 25th: Congratulations to the girls who are a pproaching the school finals in the tennis matches. Good luck to you all.

FRIDAY, 6th: Well , that was another eventful 4th period . At 11 .30 Sister Luigi received a phone call by which she was told that a bomb, due to go off at 11.45, was pl anted in the school. Now, I ask you, who would want to blow up C .L.C .? Anyway , we were sent to the gardens while police scoured the school. No bomb was found, and it was 12.00, so back to class we went, VERY anti-climactic this time!

4th Week MONDAY, 29th: The bomb, of course, took precedence but last Friday we had another theatre night. lt ~as not as successful a money-raiser as the last, but the film was very good - "The Fixer".

TUESDAY, 30th: I suppose it helped their studies but · the film "Macbeth" that the M atrics saw at the Rivoli in Camberwell was pretty ordinary.

OCTOBER WEDNESDAY, 1st: During October- the month of the Rosa ry- the Rosary is being said in the chapel at lunchtime every Monday , Wednesday and Thursday, beginning tod ay.

THURSDAY, 2nd : Look-out - the weather is finally becoming wa rmer. Now, many free periods are being taken outside in the sun and dark glasses are getting to be the necessa ry thing.

FRIDAY, 3rd : Father Donohue fin ally gave the Matrics a C.D. lesson - the first in um, how long?? First Friday Mass in the Cathedral , too.

5th Week MONDAY, 6th: There was to have been Assembly today, but the film to be shown did not arrive. Last Saturday (4th) was a testing day for French students - the Alliance Francaise. If they did not do well , it does help to increase their confidence for the final exams - but I'm sure most of our students did do well.

TUESDAY, 7th: "Man For All Seasons" was the film the Matrics saw today at the Rivoli . You may have realized by now th at it is a series of films that the theatre is showing - and they all seem " pretty ordinary".

WEDNESDAY, 8th: From Mercy College, Sister Ephrem and Mr. Bedford came to speak to the Leavings and Matrics about Catholic teaching and the two Teachers' Colleges.

THURSDAY, 9th: The Ma tric Religion lesson with Mr. Ha milton was forfeited today as the school photos were being taken. The "Caritas" is in for a new look - class photos taken in small groups with the lovely convent garden as a setting. And who was taking those photos? - Michele Turner.

FRIDAY, 10th: Art lectures at Melbourne University tonight for Matric Art ~tudents. You know, most of us are counting to the exams in terms of weeks, but there are a few - they must really be feeling the pinch - who are counting in days.

6th Week MONDAY, 13th: Yesterday was the school 's annual picnic at Mount Evelyn. The day was the same as it has been every other year - GREAT! Today, the rest of the school photos were ta ken by our adept Jack-of-alltrades, Michele.

TUESDAY, 14th : Some of that spring 'flu is about, and a couple of teachers ha ve succumbed. Get well soon.

WEDNESDAY, 15th: We were sorry to lea rn th at Sue Pickering's sister died yesterday, lea ving a husband a nd ba by boy. Our sympathy goes out to the Pickering family .

THURSDAY, 16th : French Aural Comprehension exam this morning - poor things. And while the French students went through their paces, the rest of us had a quiet , relaxed morning, arrivin g at school at playtime .

TUESDAY, 28th: And as a follow-up to yesterday, you would be surprised how many watches were confisca ted. The inspection was, we gather, to fix up uniforms for Thursday.

WEDNESDAY , 29th: This afte rnoon the Leavings went to the Leveson Street Gallery to see the paintings and works by Louis Kah an. " Fabulous" was the most common reaction.

THURSDAY, 30th : Today, 1969, Sister Una turned the first sod on the Eltham site for C.L.C. and planted a sma ll gum tree, donated by the girls. That ceremony followed a Mass in the Eltham parish church to ask God 's blessing on thi s new era of C.L.C. Everyone was very impressed by the day's proceedings.

FRIDAY, 31st: The Matrics were here this morning but they were given the afternoon off in o~der to do some private study. Thank you .

7th Week MONDAY, 20th: A beautiful sunn y day - the best we have had to date. It make~ you want to roll up your sleeves and abso rb some of the sunshine - however, the pose is somewhat unladylike.

TUESDAY, 21st: "The Power a nd th e Glory" at the Rivoli served one good purpose. Throughout it we were ab le to remark on what was omitted , added and changed - which proved our knowledge of the book.

WEDNESDAY, 5th: The ha ll looked rather "'done-up" today with colours splashed a ll over. Reason? Leaving Craft was on di splay for an examiner to evaluate it. Hope a ll the girls did well. Sister Una gave us an early afte rnoon to celebrate her Feast Day. THURSDAY, 6th: For Ma tries interested in University studies, Father Mcinerney , S.J. gave inform ation abou t University life, courses, subjects and opportunities. Father may have prepared some of us for next year with his advice.

FRIDAY , 7th : We changed over into su mmer uniform yesterday and, as usual , Melbourne turned on so me relatively cool weather for the occasion.

Tickets for the annual C hristmas raffle were given out today. Thank you to the donors of the prizes.

10th Week MON DAY, 10th : Assembly thi s morning. Two minor alterat:ons in uniform - a new pattern for the overall and gold shorts and white blouse for gym. Models were Mary O'Neill (Form IV) and Sue Breheney (form V).

TUESDAY, JI th: Matrics had lunch together at the "South Seas" to celebrate their break-up tomorrow.

WEDNESDAY, 12th : Leavings had a Mass yesterday to thank Goel for His blessings during the year, and today they went to Ferntree Gully for a picnic with Sister Colombiere and Sister Genevieve. The Matrics had a Mass tod ay and a t 5.30 a buffet-tea with their teachers to say a last good-bye to them wh\le wearing C.L.C.'s uniform . Now Leavings and Matrics have broken up to study for the exams. Speech Night is to be in late February or early M arch . See you a ll then.

Y.C.S. The Young Ch ri stian Students Movement began aga in this year in a promising fashion with 70 members, includin g 16 leade rs . Both leaders' a nd group meetings were held weekly , a nd because of the support a nd interest shown by our religiou> assistant, S.M. Colombiere , and chaplain , Father D ono hu e, a nd the enthusiasm shown by the gi rls, these meetings proved successfu l. Our a im was to further cur a postolate as C hristi a ns and we tried to inc orpo rate this idea into a ll our act ivities. It is hoped th at this will continue in the e nsui ng years.

Y.C.S. Week was held in July , ending on the Friday afte rnoon with the a nnua l Review , whi ch th is year was very successfu l. It included a film and gro up discussion whi ch portrayed the general mea ning of Y.C.S. a nd those present a ppea red to find it both interest in g and profita ble.

In early Jul y, we joined with C hri st ians of other denominations so th at we might further understa ndin g a nd dialogue between a ll C hristi a ns.

The theme of the t:'Vening was "communication between people" a nd I think that a ll present came to a better understa nding of what this means.

It was decided th a t the a im s of the Y.C.S. at C .L.C. should be reviewed a nd thu s, twenty leaders and members, three Sisters a nd Father Donohue paid a week-end visit to Hea lesville. Mass was celebrated each day , a nd am pl e time was set as ide to discuss th e Movement at C.L.C. Because of the enthusiasm shown by the people present, it concluded successfu ll y a nd th e benefits of it were felt at C.L.C. for m a ny weeks to come.

CHRISTINE BEASLEY: A ni ghtin g.;i le in more ways th a n o ne - a doeeyed lady - frequenter of the music room, a nd a n unliftin g class influence upon her "philistine" friends. She intends to squ a nder the rest of her life catering to th e whims of other people's children (kinder-age), a nd a lso entertaining(?) people with her sin gin g. She is very active at gym a nd dancing.

RENEE BONORA: Although Renee is our lead in g French mathematician , her m a in a mbition in life is to st ud y pottery a nd stained-glass, with mat hem a tical prec ision' , Renee excels in Expression a nd Literature .

She does not take Litera ture as a subject , but just likes to "sit-in" so she can be :iskej the first question.

PATRICIA CANAVAN: A pupil of C.L.C. for 14 years a nd a second generation C.L.C. girl whose mother was a t sc hoo l here, she makes herself felt in a ll spheres. ANNE DOBSON: Anne, 14 years a pupil of C .L.C ., a nd a lso a second generation C.L.C. girl , is our Sports Leader, who intends to continue activities as a P.T. teac her. She has capably organized the athlete a nd basketball teams throughout the sc hool. Anne is always fir ct off the m a rk on o ur tri-weekly excursions to th e Scholastic Education Centre.

JENNIFER HALL: An avid spo rts fan with a good se nse of f w1 and a friendly di sposition - a gymnastic pace-setter (not to mention a backbreaker!). She possesses remarkable "chameleon-like" hair, m a nifested at French Orals in " red fury' ', even to the tips. She is the fa ithful bl ac kboard cleaner.

BLANQUITA IRIONDO: Does Sister Genevieve teach French or Spanish?

A problem " bubbly-people" Bla nqui can never solve. It is highly improbable th at ~ h e talks in her sleep as (i) she is a n insomni ac a nd (ii) she does sufficient during the day . She is one of the four who excel in driving lessons, a nd is a super-ac tive Y.C.S. leader - th e only hole-puncher owner! She hopes to e nliven Monash with her prese nce next yea r.

MARY JONES: "Still water runs deep" but M a ry is not always THAT quiet- ever had a cackling, infectious laugh sneak up on you?

Conscientious and consistent in her studies, she is one of the few joys in our teachers' lives.

DIANNE MARSH: C.L.C.'s most popular fan. She is always willing to help Sister Genevieve out of the French class. A great advocate of self-expression, Dia nne believes in speaking her mind at all costs.

REGINA MATEUSZCZYK: Perhaps the best thing about Reg is her " better-ha lf" in khaki, anJ the worst thing , her delayed "chicken" laugh! Reg is ada ma nt in her oppo~ition to homework assignments, that are due in on set dates.

VICKY NICOL: Secretary of the Y.C.S., and relieves many Literature lessons with her quips. She plans to take up Social Work a t R.M.T.T. cafeteria, as this is more interest ing than study! Vicky dwells in the outback a t Epping.

PATRIC IA NORRIS: She has one definite claim to fame- a trophy, presented on her birthday, inscribed "The World 's Best Blusher" a nd ~ he proved it! Her other claims to fame are her bottle(?) blonde hair a nd her diligence at study. Tricia hopes to do nursing at St. Vincent 's next year.

DIANNE PATTERSON: Strikes us as being an enthusiastic gymnast a nd dancer(?). She also exercises her vocal powers at the Conservatorium and is interested in the theory of a rt , all of which interests ~ he hopes to pass on to others when she begins teaching in two or three years' time.

SUE PIC KERING: Student Council Secretary . She is quiet a nd placid in uniform but a ppeara nces a re deceiving. She hopes to do accountancy, but her main interest seems to be the study of the Victorian grass snail.

HEATHER RAYMOND: May be described as a laughing transcendentalist a nd a good cook - though a little hot! Treated to a rare and tender experience upon consuming her first serve of Australian beef recently , she was afterwards heard to rem a rk - yuk!

ANNE-MARIE RYAN: Twelve years at C.L.C., is a young lady with an eni gmatic look which mesmerises us all. Extremely talented at something - maybe a record-breaking yoghurt eater of the future! A kindhearted a nd obliging girl, in fact the 11;ery incarnation of . . . of .. . of . . . oh something!, she .. .

BARBARA SELLARS: One of our hard -working students. Nurse Barb will be on duty next year - look out everyone! She is well qualified as the star of our Biology classes. We know her amiability a nd obliging ways will be much appreciated by her pa tients.

JOAN SHEEHAN: A scrupulously well-groomed lady who has stubbornly attended C.L.C. with unblemished record (or else she covers her track s well as our researchers could not disclose any indiscretions!) for eleven years. Joan is a nother ~econd generation C.L.C. girl.

ANNE SUNNER : Anne is well read a nd a lways finds the right word for the right situation. She has taken many mental driving lesso ns during school hours , going up school walls a nC: going down agai n. One of the few Latin scholars she ta kes a personal interest in Julius Caesar. Anne suggests we menti on her "dry wit".

DENISE SYMONDS: Gives tone to our class by being a second-year Matric, with a pass a lre ady in her pocket. She is one of the few conscientious weight-watchers in the sc hool - sole person to demonstrate will-power in adverse conditions - the centre of th e tuck shop.

JOSEPHINE TESORIERO: One of the most obliging girls in the class, lives up to her name as Student Co uncil Treasurer, as Tesoriero is Italian for Treasurer. She is Father Donohue's life-saver during many excruciating C .D. lessons. She has a lso sa ved " Avon" from bankruptcy m a ny times.

MICHELE TURNER: The Matric " mag ic-child", ear-endearing a nd original. Michele has a numbe r of varied ta lents a nd entertained everyone with her guitar-accompanied singing at our farewell dinner.

She has earned for herself the title of the " Phantom Student"!

MARIJA VARANIUS: An individualistic, original a nd opinionated idealist with a quiet fortitude and two feet. She is inspired by the present "world mess" a nd her study of Thomas More to create a Utopia.

MARGAR ET HA VISSER: An Arya n beauty, a n active participant in sc hool affairs and usu a lly has her own ideas a bout things. She does everything with aplomb a nd has an infectious grin. She is thoroughly "involved" and ready to "take-over".

GAYLENE WATTS: Our walking medicine chest, who ac ts as carpenter, mechanic a nd engineer. She a lw ays travels with the tools of her various trades - renowned pencil-case , alias tool-box. What 's the a ttraction of cheese a nd lettuce sandwiches, Gaylene?

C AROLYN WEIR: Quiet and friendly , a nd is also a second generation C.L.C. girl. For an aspiring solicitor she has an unusual fe a r of large numbers of small children, particul a rly Grade 6 age. With Carry as a supporter, Carlton doesn 't need anyone else. Not even lunch , let alone Father's inspiring words at the Y.C.S. week-end, could keep her away from th e tran sistor!

ELIZABETH WILLIAMSON: Quiet , friendly and most obliging a lways - still a nother second ge nera tion C .L.C. girl. She shows great interest in the Yarraville Firsts for which she practi ses ass iduously during gym and ballet. Elizabeth broke a long bleak period for Loyola by leading them to victory in the School Sports.

-Leonie Bourke, Form V St. Joseph Form V will never foreet its first school dance. The hall was a dream to behold , with its canopy ~ of streamers and balloons, and the music of the band created an at mosphere perfect for dancing the night away. The girls in their brightly coloured dance dresses whirled like gay butterflies over th e floor , and their pa rtnt:rs agreed that it was a great night.

Did you notice a ll those girls crying with la ughter a t th at magnificent production of the famous Shakespearean comedy, " Romeo and Juliet"? lt brought joy to the hea rt to see so m any carefree young girls obviously enjoying themselves so much!

Our last drama lesson for the season proved to be an unusual and interesting one. After listenin g to classical music, groups of girls were asked to portray their interpretations of the mu sic on the stage. This proved to be enjoyable as well as beneficial to our future dramatic careers.

An old-time cops and robbers chase, an operation, a farmyard of hens, the assassination of a fly a nd a mad orchestra were all performed before the class. This was a pleasant a nd welcome change from the usual play reading.

A beautiful day was provided for the group of geographical genii who travelled to Geelong. Excitement was added to the day by a few girls who ve ry cleverly missed the tra in. After lunching ha ppily in the sun and playing games on the swing we were ready ~to leave. Or were we? There seemed to be more empty sea ts th a n before. After a n extensive search the culprits were found ga th erin g wild flowers. They soon lost them as the flowers were

eaten by the waiting company. A guided tour of the port of Geelong (which seems to export only to Nauru) wns included , but did not seem to be the main point of interest. The train trip back to Melbourne, on which we had the train to ourselves (one carriage) was . . . ve-e-r-r-y interesting.

We did not know we had so many song-birds in the class (crows, unfortun ately).

Only one good product seems to have come from Miss McAlpin's attempts at training us in the finer arts. Suzanne Heywood! She played an essential part in two productions of Division Four. She was on T.V. for a good thirty seconds! Congratulations to Suzanne! She managed to drag all the conscientious girls of St. Joseph 's away from their studies and do that ra riti es of rarities, watch television .

Paula Looby is another televi sion sta r living amongst the adoring masses. She appeared on Showcase '69. She was not alone, her talent undiluted by others would have been too overpowering. She and her friend s were well placed. Congratulations again!

Pity the poor people who had to put up with girls rushing madly around reciting, naturally with great feeling, French poetry! Pity a lso the girls who had to go for their Fre1~c h orals! More pity , and prayers, are needed for the poor unfortunate German st udents who must have a German conversation with complete strangers!

A group of girls composd a para liturgy which was conducted in the school chapel on 6th November. The two Leaving classes combined to pray for God 's guidance in their future lives , <1nd to thank Him for His blessings during 1969. Everyone thought the paraliturgy was very helpful and a ppropri ate.

A " hoodoo·· descended on us at photograph time. Twice our photos did not come out with the re sult th at some of us "missed out" . For our missing ones, please refer to "Ca ritas·', 1968 .

FORM V ST. JOAN The prevailing form spirit right from the beginning of the year ha s been one of innovation , exhibiting itself pa rticul a rly in the geogra phy of the room . This has been described by some as trying to fit square pegs into round holes within one big square. Others merely 5hrug and regard it as an eccentricity of the outgoing nature of our form mistress. Numerous patterns ha ve been designed to produce varying psychological effects on all who work(?) there , and each has been credited with some success. lt was rather a let-down to have to return to norm a l schoolroom atmosphere in the last month ; undoubtedly this was pa rt of a nefarious plot to induce unwilling students to study.

Living in a Biology room ha s awakened in all of us a reverence for Mother Nature. Through hot and cold , through thick and thin , we've nursed baby chicks through incuba ti on and hatching to a n untimely premature

Co nversatio ns in Term l were directed large ly towards th e sc hoo l dance, th e o nl y o ne of the yea r. We thought it was a success a nd ho pe fo r mo re in future yea rs.

Anna Quagliato left us then for America, but Ma ry Fincham from England filled th e gap . Not th at she 10ok Anna 's place - she made her ow n.

T erm II saw plent y of h:l rd work interspersed with exc ursio ns a nd extra-curricular pursuits. These included a n ec um enica l Y.C.S. ni ght, but. close r to ho me. a visit to Kew Cottages. H ere we saw in practice thai conce rn for those who a re di sadvantaged which we had previously di scussed in th eory . Also Dr. Syer came to spea k to us about prayer, as Sister Colombiere felt we had a need for finding grea ter mea nin g in prayi ng.

Term Jll was such a short term we found ourselves tying up ends during most of it. Mi ssion money was a pro blem th at had to be surmount ed . Since no ne to speak of had been collected throu gho ut th e yea r, we had to have a last term rush . This reached a clim ax when the previously musty old laboratory was transformed into a glo rious casino in true M o nt e Ca rl o sty le. In for mer ~ were threa tened with dire punishm ent, a nd the manage ment took care to ~ee th at just ice at least appeared to be done.

Throughout the yea r the trend for a rri vi ng late has increased. Certai n class members found their efforts (at unpunctu a lit y) aptl y rewa rded by suppl yi ng the need for room-cleaners.

A series of lunch-hour co n:.:e rt s helped to break th e monotony of pies 'n sa uce . These perform a nces by we ll-know n a rti sts - Miss Mary McMahon , Dame Margie Rya n and the lovely Rita were much ap prec iated by the class - if not so accepta ble to the staff dining next door! It is hoped th at o th er student s in future yea rs will be privileged to see their fe llows displaying ta lents in this impromptu manner, so that in due co urse a true Australi a n culture will be see n to eme rge from o ur prese nt primitive da rkness.

Our appreciat ion of th e Arts ca me to a clim ax at the Ed uca ti on Night conce rt when the youn g actresses named above too k th e roles of Heca te and her witches, supportin g th e oth er pl ayers in two dramatic sce nes from Shakespeare's grea t Macbeth.

RETREAT Our yea rl y retreat was gi ven at the school on the 23rd October with the guida nce of o ur school chapla in , F ath er D o nohue.

T he day comm enced with an enli ghtenin g lecture in th e chapel , which was given o n th e subj ect "Wh o am 1?" and "Wh at am I?" This helped u s to see o urselves as indi vidua ls, and the th eme was ca rried through the day in all th e acti vities.

The class played an import ant part in thi s retreat, and this activity was ma inl y show n in three part s;. the Pa ra liturgy , the P rayer of the F a ithful , a nd th e we ll-pl anned G ospel insiructi on on the Samarit an wom an .

FORM I NOTES

Thinking back, third term seems to have been the most exciting. What with two bomb scares! Do you think the Victori an Police Force imagined we would do such a thing? The first bomb scare was very dram a t;c with a ma ss exodus to the Fiztroy G a rdens. We spent our time wisely though , doing our own little bit to help Russell Street by keeping our eye out for suspicious characters. The second bomb scare wasn 't nea rly so exciting -- this time we only got as far as the tenni~ court - we were learning.

Some girls were even heard to remark th at they wanted to get on with their lessons and "wasn't it a nui sance?" Don 't worry - they weren't Form Hi 's.

It doesn 't see m very lo ng since our first day at Catholic Ladies' College. We felt quite differently about our sc hool then , imagining it to be a rather awesome establishment. Such a lot has happened since our a rrival. .

The aching limbs on Wednesdays couldn't be suffered unless we knew that thi s would save us going on that diet to remove winter weight.

So it's "Eat, drink and be merry, for Wednesd ay will solve all problems.'· Education Night - we were down on the programme to recite a poem "The Shearer's Wife" - quite a sad story re ally. Perhaps that little boy in the front row or the girl on the spotlight might know what m ade it so amusing. For our second night's performance, we had to practise - not the poem - but how not to laugh - no m atter what.

Thursday is the day we a ll speak correctly- "The rain in Spain, stays ma inly in the plain." T a ke note - the actresses of the future are in our mid st.

During the seco nd term we had to foreit some of our beloved English lessons for Mothercraft. That little pl astic doll was bathed so often she mu st be the cleanest doll in Melbourne. Congratu lations to Ann Williams, Jane Keech , Michele Harrison who had the best books.

No more fi lm s for Form Ill - that is not unless it is some rollicking comedy . Our teachers were ashamed of us, after Romeo and Juliet- we quite floated on tears to the exit.

It was a great day when we went to see our block of land at Eltham - to think we will be the first Leavin g Class at new C.L.C. - we will actually make hi story then. The country air will be good for our little brains and maybe we will boil the billy for our cup of tea - throwing in a gum leaf o r two. Maybe! We w~re glad Sr. Anthony could be with us on that important day. She thinks we have grown up nicely since she last saw us in Form l.

The variety of subjects we study is a pleasant as pec t of school. We especially love learning Gymn astics a nd Dancing as they keep us fit and graceful (?). At th e sc hool concert our form presented an item called "The Circus" . We were divided into groups representin g C lowns, Horses, Riders , Trapeze Artists and Cape Dancers. Each gro up did a dance sequence in their brightly coloured costumes. We even had a strong man . but unfortunately he was exposed as a fraud by one of the clowns.

Art and craft are a lways popul a r subjects a nd outings to public a rt displays have added extra interest to them this year.

Drama is both enjoyab le and beneficia l. As well as speech and voice training we ta ke part in many impromptu plays. We may be given a word (e.g., the key) around which we build a story to ac t. Sometimes we li sten to a. piece of music a nd then ma ke up a mime to suit the mood of the

m USIC.

Early in the second term we were lucky enough to be invited to a n Orchestral Concert and a lthough most of us prefer modern music we were surprised to find classica l mu sic so enjoyable.

Even English ha s been more interes ting this year as we have studied Literature as well as Expression. We have had many open discussions a nd some forma l deba tes on interesting topics such as Co-Education , Co nscription, Femininity , Formality and th e Death Penalty.

Our class is very interested in sport <1.nd some of our members ha ve won pri zes at both swimming a nd athletic sports. At the sc hool picnic we had a wonderfu l time, enjoying a barbec ue lunch fo ll owed by exhausting games.

Apa rt from the extra activities we benefit from we have grown to love C.L.C. because of the friendly , relaxed atmosphere both in and out of class. We hope we can uphold the tradition and stand ards that have been set for us.

With Sister Una as our head nun , We seem to h11ve quite a lot of fun.

Although we have our hard times too , At the end of the year we a ll say ' "Boo Hoo" .

This year we have had an enjoyable time As Grade Six won the Quest with their great m11ne.

And the rest had a good tim e, I am sure.

Tha nk heaven the weather at our sports was not poor.

And for swimming, good heavens, the wa ter was cold!

But this year Aikenhead has the cup to hold.

A very successful reunion was held in March, a nd it was a great p:easure to see so man y old fri e nds aga in . and so many little ones with their mothers.

In May, the Annual Ba ll was held a t the Roy a le Ba llroom , eleven de bs being presented. The Ball was most enjoyab le, the band catering for the tastes of both young and 0ld. Next year, the Fathers' and Mothers' Co mmittees are joining with the Old Collegi a ns in what will be one of the best balls of 1970. So, Old Collegians, keep the encl of May free next year for the ball to m a rk the last year of C.L.C. at East Melbourne.

Other functions \~ere a Theatre Night a nd a Gem Display by a n ex-student, Jenn i Ross, a nd her father - both functions most enjoyable.

By no means the least of our activities was the raffle of the Monaro Co upe , in conjunction with th e: Fa thers' a nd Mothers' Co mmittees. The exst udent s rose to the cccasion m<1 rvel lou sly . Than ks to everyone for contributin g so ge nerously.

We would like to mention here an outsta ndin gly loy a l ex-student , Mrs. Alma Tully, who died thi s year. Mrs. Tully was one of the pupils a t C. L.C. in 1902, when it began at East Melbourne. She was present at ;i!most every Commemorati o n Ma ss a nd Reunion in November until last year, a nd was a lways vit a lly in1erested in her old school. M ay God rewa rd her now for her goodness.

The members of the Executive of the Association were very ha ppy , indeed , to represent all Old Coll eg ia ns at the Mass to mark the beginning of work on the new college a t Eltham. We have all loved C.L.C. well in the past, a nd we hope to continue to show our love by helping our old sc hool in its future years a t its new loc at ion .

SPORTING ACTIVITIES In February thi s year, at the Fitzroy Baths, our annual sw imming sports were held. With the sun shinin g brightly a nd everyone cage r, the events went by with good performances given by a ll who participated. The eventual winner was Aikenh ead with Marita a close second.

Once the swimming afternoon was over, a ll interest was turned to the ma in sporting feature of the year, the School Sport~. With a ll eager to win points for the <r teams and help them on to victory , most girls entered all possible events. The "Open C hampionship" was a good final with Mary McArdle th e winner, and Theresa Hosk in g runner-up. Despite Ma rit a's vain effort to snatch victory, Loyola held on a nd won by a small margin. Vincentia displayed good potentia l in their figure ma rchin g ;i nd won the ma rchin g cup. In the Mary Open inter-school events Bambi King won her championship, and the " Under 12'" rel ay team came second . Congratula ti o ns to SI. Columb:i's who dominated all inter-school eve nts.

An invit ation to take part in St. Columba's Sports was accept<!d and en joyed. These sports were held at the Moonee Va lley Race Co urse on Saturday, 29th March.

Jn October of thi s year two of our future prospects entered the Victori an Schoolgirls' Cham pionships. Both Glenda Buckley a nd Francesca Joyce competed in the Under 13 , 100 metres. The ~ e two girls did very well , :ichieving fourth and fifth respectively .

Once the Sports were finished interest was centred in our new sports lesson, gym . The introduction of thi s lesson was extremely popul ar , and (Continued on vag e ::12 )

Due to unfo rtun ate wea ther co nditions (Melbourne, yo u kn o w!!) few inter-school tenni s matc hes were played. We had two teams, A and B, wh o competed agai nst Melbo urne C.E.G.G.S., St. Al oysius and Lo reto Convent. Both tea ms played like champio ns a nd wo n their m atches confide ntl y.

The inter-ho use tenn is was a n event closely contes ted . Loyola wo n after a close tu ss le with Marit a and Vincentia. Sc hool T enni s C ha mpi o nships we re played in th e third term . All fin a ls we re strongly contested with Jilli an Murphy go in g dow n to Marga ret C hee! in the Open C ham pionship.
