Day by Day at C.L.C. Sehool Diary TERM

TUESDAY, 6th FEBRUARY: Seven glorious weeks of freedom cruelly ended by the tolling of the old school bell. Our numbers are much diminished, so the obstacle race from fl ag-pole to washrooms is not quite so exciting. World-sh a king event-tuckshop open at lunch hours-doom to those slender figures and unblemished complexions. Pies and pasties can a lso be procured hot from our "new" tuckshop-sandwich bar. Teachers released us early tod ay, intending. no doubt , to turn on the pressure gradually.

WEDNESDAY, 7th FEBRUARY: Many an aching limb struggled home tonight a fter the first in that series of ordeals with our sport and ballet. Welcome to Miss Armstrong, who seems quite intent on carrying on the tradition of previous Sports teachers-a gentle (??) workout. We rock the foundations of the hall , practising our ballet leaps. Many a stare as the Matrics practise their Bambi Smith Walk after the first lecture of a new grooming course.

THURSDAY, 8th FEBRUARY: Election of prefects followed one of those uneventful schooldays. Peaches on the newly-discovered peach tree are slowly ripening under the wa tchful eyes of a secretive few .

FRIDAY, 9th FEBRUARY: Prefects announced tod ay and congratul ations to all those who were elected. Special wishes to Margaret Gilbertwe would like her to know that we a re with her "a ll the way". An early afternoon was surely w<1 rranted on such '1 n important day.

MONDAY, 12th FEBRUARY: Atmosphere today has all the symptom s of a n acute attack of Mondayitis. To make matters worseGreen peaches - greedy girls - stomach ache .

TUESDAY , 13th FEBRUARY: The smiling faces of Form II show how pleased they a re with their new teacher, Sister Joseph a, who ha il s from Sydney.

WEDNESDAY, 14th FEBRUARY: As is regul a rly the case on Wednesdays, we discover muscles that we never knew existed. Miss Armstrong's latest school motto-"Keep Moving! " M<·1tric. Germ an class-the whole four of them-keeps the rest of the class in suspen se as to what will happen next.

THURSDAY, 15th FEBRUARY: Miss McAlpin begins the task of choosing the Drama Festiva l play. Century heat today, but the Weather Bureau has assured us that a cool change is on the way.

FRIDAY, 16th FEBRUARY: Cool change still on the way. Despite their white habits even the nuns are beginning to wilt .

MONDAY, '19th FEBRUAR,Y: Prefects hold Ho use meetings for swimming sports. Let's hope this year that the life-savers are a ble to swim.

By the way, the cool change is still coming and the nuns are still wiltin g.

work on the part of iwo prefects, and at last the band for the dance is finalised. Now for the most interesting arrangement-supper. Dismissed early-thank Heaven for sta ff meetings.

WEDNESDAY, 3rd APRIL: Wednesday seems to be teachers' bad day -why, oh why do we have to suffer? What's up with the Matrics? "keepings off" at lunchtime! They must be celebrating the good news about the opera. Another deportment class. Surely we must be showing some improvement by now!

THURSDAY, 4th APRIL: The Intermediate class is very proud of Sue Schibeci, their potential globe-trotter. The whole school, in fact, is envying her as we draw closer to Term I exams.

FRIDAY, 5th APRIL: Not much work done by seniors today, as preparations are being made for the Ecumenical Night. There seems to be a great stream of seniors into the tuckshop. Thank heavens for those visiting " Bethlehem " girls-no French dictee.

MONDAY, 8th APRIL: Praises in order for Ecumenical Night-a great success. Congratulations, Y.C.S. Parade's enthusiasm for the "Bluestone Pile" knows no bounds-two representatives from said school arrived today all the way from Bundoora to boost sales.

TUESDAY, 9th APRIL: Matriculation French Orals progressing-not quickly enough for the French class, however.

WEDNESDAY, 10th APRIL: A certain Y.C.S. treasurer became very attached to the school today after bumping head first into one of the blue pillars.

THURSDAY, 11th APRIL: Examination time-tables issued today. We are too dumbfounded to make any further comment. We'll need the Easter Holidays to get over the shock .

WEDNESDAY, 17th APRIL: End of Easter holidays, and beginning of Annual Retreat for Matrics at "Ave Maria'', Essendon . As far as the rest of the school is concerr.ed it !s a case of "Make hay while the Matrics a re away" or, if you prefer, "When the Mice are away the Cats will play!"

THURSDAY, 18th APRIL: Drama. Alas, poor Juliet! "Romeo, Romeo. wherever are you, Romeo?" Actually he (she) is away on Retreat. Parting is such sweet sorrow, but never mind , the lovers will be reunited next Thursday.

FRIDAY, 19th APRIL: Although it is only first term , Sister Josepha is anxiously looking out for new basketball talent during the class basketball periods which she supervises. Sister is our new coach this year. Good luck!

MONDAY, 22nd APRIL: Much discussion of the "silent" Retreat last week. During Retreat we made a thorough examination of our hectic lives.

First taste of winter weather and we are still in summer uniform. Many envious gl ances at the nuns in their winter habits.

TUESDAY, 23rd APRIL: Although the exams are close, the prefects still find time to huddle in St. Gemma's with their coffee and chocolate biscuits. Form II are all wondering what the secrecy is about , but all Leavings and Matrics know it is "THE DANCE! " WEDNESDAY, 24th APRIL: All are lost in admiration of Grade S's stamina - they play skippy aJI playtime and all lunchtime. Enthusiastic

THURSDAY, 251h APRIL : Anzac Day, and a holiday-but our patriotic members, toge!l->er with their families, attend the Annual Anzac Mass in the school ha ll.

FRIDAY, 26th APRIL: With the thought of !he exams dampening any enthusiasm we might have had for school at this late stage of the term , we are little comforted by the thought of the coming week-end. However, the tuckshop is still prospering. We comfort ourselves with chocolate teddy bear bi scuits and drown our sorrows in dr;nk (soft).

MONDAY, 29th APRIL: Very little activity, sports-wise, that is, on the playground at lunchtime today, though many open books can be seen .

Could the exams be beginning tomorrow?

TUESDAY. 30th APRIL: Exams begin for everyone. Matrics come to school only on those days when lhey have exams.

THURSDAY, 2nd MAY: Exam s continue- heads in oooks-no more news.

MONDAY, 6th MAY: Now we can relax aga in' But our teachers think differently-WORK, WORK , WORK! 5:till, this doesn't take our minds off the Da nce.

TUESDAY, 7th MAY: "Model'" pictures arrived, thanks to ATVO and Margaret. Decorations are already being prepared, but no one is supposed to know.

WEDNE~DA Y, 8th MAY: Excitement is increasing. Attempts are being made to have most of decorative work done so that the hairdressers will be able to have plenty of time to r;reate some eye-catching styles.

THURSDAY, 9th MAY: School Dance tonight. If I may say so, the hall is a credit to the decorators.

FRIDAY, 10th MAY: Most important day of term-brea k-up day.

TUESDAY , 28th MAY: Second Term begins. We learnt today with rnrrow th at our neighbouring school, St. Pat's, i5 to close at the end of the year. Matrics had a marvellous time at Sorrento. Our apologies to Sister Helen for forgetting (?) our English questions.

WEDNESDAY, 29th MAY: Contrary to their usu al experience, the Matrics are ab le to survive their sport lesson today. Perhaps those early morning runs and those mid winter swims at Sorrento were the reasons for this sudden change.

THURSDAY, 30th MAY: Romeo and Juliet are at it again -will they win the Festival?

MATRICS AT SORRENTO FRIDAY, 31st MAY: Our ruthless Sports Ca ptain has the basketball players practising every day, so it is not surprising to find the goalers with a ball at the change of periods.

MONDAY, 3rd JUNE : This morning at Assembly Diane Manwaring, who won the C.L.C. Newman Scholarship in 1964 and has specialised in Far Eastern studies at the Universi ty, gave us an interesting account of her recent trip to China. The talk was illustrated by slides. No singing lesson today, on account of the illness of Sister Theresia. We hope she will be back with us soon.

TUESDAY, 4th JUNE : No news today, 01~ly hard work-and what"s new about that?

WEDNESDAY, 5th JUNE: Poor hungry Matric . Geography class starves as usua l. (Don't get the wrong impressio n, however; it's only on Wednesdays that they starve-the reason , you may recollect , has already been stated in this Diary-you don't remember it?-oh well , we knew you didn't really care!)

THURSDAY, 6th JUNE : Miss McAlpin deserts C.L.C. today for St. Kevin's. Hard to understand-surely the C.L.C. girls are much nicer than the boys of St K's, even if we aren't brilliant at drama .

FRlDA Y. 7th JUNE : More "Romeo an d Juliet" and more speculation as to the possible winner of this year's competition.

MONDAY, 10th JUNE : Still no singing lessons. Matrics and Leavings are so heartbroken that they leave school 35 minutes early. Meanwhile the rest of the school slaves on.

TUESDAY, I Ith JUNE : Inter-House basketball teams are getting into shape for the vigorous competition arranged by the sports prefects.

WEDNESDAY, 12th JUNE: Sport, dancing a nd decrepit students.

THURSDAY, 13th JUNE: Feast of Corpus Christi , and Mass was offered in the C hapel tod ay by Father Donohue.

FRIDAY, 14th JUNE: Congratulations to the "A" and "C" basketball teams which so far are undefeated. Keep it up, girls! Rosemary Wilkinson , another illustrious ex-student, spoke to the Matrics tod ay abo ut the rewarding career of occupational therapy.

MONDAY, 17th JUNE: Nothing- of special interest- it's Mondayugh!

TUESDAY, 18th JUNE: C.L.C. was represented in "It's Academic" by three Intermediates who showed their genius (a typical feature of C.L.C. students) by winning the first heat. Congratulations to Colette Reeves, Leonie Bourke and Maiy McArdle. The Matric class wishes Sister Una and Sister Helen all the best for their new career on TV. WEDNESDAY, 19th JUNE: The staff is prepa ring for the Pare nts' and Teachers' night and the pupils are preparing for th e morning after the night before.

THURSDAY, 20th JUNE: The teachers are now prepared for anything from the Matrics--everything, that is, except a class of intending Religious.

FRIDAY, 21st JUNE: Today is the Feast of the Sacred Heart, and tho whole school attended Mass at the Cathedral.

MONDAY, 24th JUNE: Sister Una is ill and will be away all the week.

Two sad, but very noisy farewells were sa id at C.L.C. tod ay for Glenys and Jeanette Brown, who left for Sydney today. Some extraordinary notices have appeared around the sc hool ; it appears the Prefects are going to be auctioned off.

TUESDAY, 25th JUNE: Second issue of the "Bulletin" out today, under a new name-"C.L.C.-A Heaven on Earth". One member of staff was heard to remark that if C.L.C. was a Heaven on earth she didn't want to go to Heaven any more!

WEDNESDAY, 26th JUNE: Even the Intermediates are playing 500 now and they are even going in for "seances".

THURSDAY, 27th JUNE: Much a nxiety about th at eleven dollars' worth of canvas that has to be bought for a backdrop for " Romeo a nd Juliet". We hope, for the sake of Miss McAlpin's peace of mind, th at it will soon arrive!

FRIDAY, 28th JUNE : Prefects auctioned today-a $21.00 success.

Everybody who came had a terrific time. Gaylene Watts won Margaret Gilbert, Janette Twomey won Lorraine, Judy McCudden got her sister, Maria Bortolotto got Sue Coleman, Angela Woodruff got Chri stine McCormick, Sue Breheney got Judy Reeves, Olga Haddy got Gay Russ, Anne Gooley got Judy Smith and the Leavings got Rosemary Ca nals. All the prefects are now shuddering in anticipation of their slave labours next Monday and Tuesday. P.S.- The canvas a rrived.

MONDAY, 1st JULY: Sister Una 1s still away. The prefects seemed a little shaky today as they began their two days' slavery. Judy Reeves was gleefully transformed ("!) into the "lowest form of hum a n life-a blob".

TUESDAY, 2nd JULY: "Who suggested the silly auction anyway?"

MONDAY , 22nd JULY: Comm enceme nt of Y.C.S . Week. Today's features were a Folk Mass in the C ha pel , and the junior hea t of the Talent Quest. The talent shown surprised everyone (except the parents, we suppose '). Everyone is looking forw a rd to the final cm Friday.

MONDAY , 12th AUGUST: A whole ten girls turned up in the Matric room today , and of these, two left early! Obviously, exams are commencing soon.

WEDNESDAY, 14th AUGUST: Basketball matches are in full swing, as inter-House Competition progresses. With a great dea l of practice we may yet produce a Victorian team!

Thi s year Y. C.S . bega n o n an optimistic note with seve nteen Matric a nd Leav ing leaders and with Sister Ma ry Colombiere as o ur Reli gious Assista nt. Our appreciation mu st go a lso to Father Donohue, for hi s interest and assista nce. In Te rm III the Interm ed iates joined Y.C.S. and 1 am sure that they have gai ned much in the time they have been in th e movem ent.

Our a ims were to live our lives as true student -a postl es a nd to see k to help other student s to make their " piece of ea rth" as C hri stia n as they could. Beca use these ai ms a re so important we decided th at thi s yea r we would have o nly discussion groups ;:i nd experiment with Y.C.S. , without its usual activities. Th ank s to the enthusiasm of everybody, especi ally the leaders, this was successful , although it~ rea l fruits will only be shown in t.he way we live our apostol a te in the future .

Y. C.S. We ek in Jul y was very successful and we feel su re it achieved its purpose of bringing an a wa reness of the m ovement to every pupil. Two money-raisers held in Term 11-an "A ucti o n of Prefects" a nd a 'Talent Quest"-were both profitab le and enjoyable for partic ipa nt s and spectators alike. However, the mos t successful fuilction w:is a gat herin g in April of boys and girls o f a ll denomimaions who held th e comm o n interest of furthering their a postol ate. MATRICULATION CLASS NOTES JOSIE ANGIOLELLA: Josie's the tiniest Ma tric, but she abounds with energy on the bas ketball court. Other interests include V_ietnamese correspondence ;ind enthusiastic membership of the card-play111g circle.

RENEE BONORA: Whenever Tricia Canavan is away, the class can always count on Renee to make a dull lesson interesting. She is about the most unpredictable person we know. This quality is put to great use at a game of 500 or poker, or even a deba te . Renee is an enthusiastic Mathematics student, enjoys icy-poles, ::rnd hopes to go to Melbourne University next year to do Social Studies.

JUDY BYRNE: The girl who possesses, not an overall , but a series of threads strung together. A great help to all those girls not up to date with their Biology Prae. books. One of the many organizers of the class, Judy can always be depended on when there's a job to be done.

ROSEMARY CANALS: The con1petent captain of Vincentia, and the mediatrix between th e prefects :rnd the caterers. The budding Cicero of the Matric class. Has been very active with regard to inter-school activities anu pJr ticul arly successful in fostering cordial feelings between C.L.C. and Maris! Brothers' College, East Brunswick.

PATRICIA CANAVAN: The life uf the Matric class-insists th at she is our future Miss Australia, and the rest of the class certainly wish her luck' She is sure to win over the judges, if not by her beauty, then by her powers of persuasion. Tricia revels in Literature and Browning is her hero. Apart frcm being a n entertaining debater, she shows great talent on the stage.

ANNE CARBERRY: Our country represe ntative who one day lost her hat out of the train window, to the delight of a passing cow. The "Twiggy" of the class with many hidden talenb. Moves fast on the basketball court-is, in fact, a perfect example of progression.

LORRAINE CHEEK: "Romeo, my Rom eo, wherefore a rt . . . (etc.)"'

Lorraine's acting a bility, displayed over the yea rs at C.L.C., impressed us more th an ever at this year's Dram a Festival, where she wooed Juliet in truly professional style. L.irraine is a member of the select group of Ma iric . Science students-she hopes to be a pharmacist.

CAROL CHIDGEY: The quiet girl with the cultured voice. A card fanatic who loves travelling by train. This blue-eyed blonde is the most widely travelled member of the class, hav ing been to both America and Europe.

SUSAN COLEMAN: Very active ~ports Prefect '1 nd captain of the senior basketball team. Her motto? - "Follow, follow. follow!" Though Sue excels at Geography, French is her real talent- "Je ne comprends pas'" Next year Sue would like to do Arts/Social Studies at Melbourne University, but the attrac ti0n to the Law Faculty may prove too great!

VERONICA COSGRIFF: The joy and chief critic of the Pure Mat hs a nd French classes. A great participant in a ll sports and one of Miss Kenafick's star music pupils. Her talents extend also to the field of debating, whether she is in the debate or not.

AGNES FEJES: Subtle humorist and official artist of the Y.C.S. Bulletin.

PATRICIA GAVIN: Winner of the Open Championship for running and C.L.C.'s hope for the 1972 Olynwic Games in Munich_. ls _we ll known for her phenomenal leaps on the basketball court, and 1s without doubt the Best and Fairest. Excels also at English essays-such big ideas for such small writing!

MARGARET GILBERT: Our popular Head Prefect, and . a tower of strength in this year's Mr. Irie class. M::irgaret is very. 111terested 111 spreading the good-will of ~.LC. to certa111 ne1ghbounng scholastic establishments. She is, and 1s likely to cont111ue be111g, a well-known figure at Melbourne Uni.versity. . .

JENNIFER JONES: Jennifer's 111terest 111 Biology often takes her to Bertie's (but is this Bertie Beetie???). She is one of the original members of the "5 00 Club". Jennifer has been doing General Maths by correspondence and hopes that this will lead to a career in Occupational Therapy. . .

LEONIE KELLEHER: Famed Editor of the Y.C.S. Bullet111 with the ambition of becoming a journali st. Can be seen eve ry Saturday morning at the T.A.B. Loves knitting, motor bikes, sports cars, and in particular her school uniform , which she just hates to ta ke off every evening (?).

HELEN KETT: Helen goes better with Coke' Her craving for glucose forces her to frequent the tuck shop, but she still remains one of the few slim Matrics. She is one of the quiet members of the class, but when she does speak up she always m am,ges to contribute something of interest to the class.

ROSA GALBO: Brilliant ::it Biology and a kee n card-sharper. Loves her private Biology lessons on the Footscray bus. Loves using reference books for all her extra notes. Is very enthusiastic about all indoor sports-especially cards.

HELEN LAVERY : One of our best students. Although quiet, Helen is capable of some very witty rem arks, especially during the English Literature period. She is, however, allergic to debat111g. She was very thrilled at acquiring a new baby brother last term.

CHRISTINE McCORMICK: One of the few Science students with a fl a ir for English Expression. She is one of the Coffee Jet Set. ~e wish Christine every success in her chosen career of Pnmary teach111 g.

MARY-ANNE McCUDDEN: A bit of both "Joans"-S utherbnd and Baez. She is President of a very active Y.C.S . and wears the badge of Assistant Head Prefect. A fluent writer of English, Mary-Anne never ceases to amaze the class with her four-syllable words! She is a potential Arts student.

ELIZABETH McGREGOR: One of our tall members. Her long legs have won her fame on the running track , and she is also one of our best b::isketball players. With her cheery smile and obliging manner, Elizabeth should be as we ll liked in the future as she has been during her years at C.L.C.

JANE MAGNIK: Jane's gl asses are her most prized possession- she's quite lost without them . She is well known for her books, which are quite often seen at unusual times. She is an unknown and underrated singing star; perhaps some day she will receive due recognition . We hope so!

CLARE O' LOUGHLIN: School swimming champion and a very good tennis player. Clare could surely count Beethoven and Schubert among her best friends. She put us to ,; hame at Sorrento by leaving us "on the shelf" . She is one of our two TV stars.

JUDITH REEVES: The outdoor girl of the class, and keenly interested in her duties as Prefect of Aikenhead and cRptain of the "C" Grad e basketball team. Judy , l believe, shows great enthusiasm for Germ an -perhaps she will continue her Germ anic studies next year at Melbourne University, where ~. he pl ans to do an Arts course- though she is a lso interested in Pharmacy.

GAY RUSS: Capta in of Marito.. The only Matriculation candidate who assures us she will fail. She likes basketb<dl and swimming, and has a special interest in America . We think it's very good of her to give " Bertie's" her fin a ncial support.

JUDY SMITH: Our only Australian Hi>tory student , likewi ' e the only vocal di ssenter in English Litcrnture lessons. ~he is Captain of Loyola and an inspiration to her team. Possesses a generous >hare of the Matric sense of humour.

ANNE SMYTH: The little brown bombshell of the class. She may be quiet in the Literature or French chss, cut out on th a t tennis court , does she whack the balls down the sidelines!! Good luck for Wimbledon , Anne' Next ye ar she hopes to join the teaching profession , a nd , of course, to continue her games of 500 with the girls.

DENISE SYMONDS: Alia~ " Dr. Densie". One of om brilliant Science students who hopes to make her ca reer 111 the medica l profession . But Science is not. her only talent; Denise 1s a lso th e inspiration of the French cla >s.

LIVIANA VERGENDO: If Liviana is not on the tennis court at iunch time she is eating bana nas :ind playing cards in the Matric room .

Nothing seems to upset her, not even her h:'tY fever, and every morning she greets you with a warm friendly smile. For thi s reason she was cast as th e · merry Mercutio in "Romeo a nd Juliet". Apa rt from bananas, Livi:ina also enjoys Milo and is an a vid TV fan.

JANICE WHITE: Her favourite subject is French , though she al so takes a great interest in her elocution lessons and is a good Biol<Jgy student.

She enjoys discotheques, especiaTly " Brrtie's" . Like most of the Matrics, she is a ca rd addict, and wh at's more, quite an r.xpert.

Has her own private zoo which includes rabbits, chickens, dogs , cats, mice a nd birds. Runs her own "free" pet shop in the school.

C.L.C. DEBATING 1968 Althou gh we did not ha ve much inter-school debating this year, there were interesting tussl es between cl asses within the school. The first debate was between Leavings and Matrics on the issue th at " Euthanasia Should be Made Lega l" . The Leaving girls, Susa n Pickering, C. Beasley and Michelle Turner defeated the Matrics, Mary-Anne McCudden, Margaret Gilbert a nd Veronica Cosgriff. It was very close a nd Sister M. Helen was adjudicator. Sister M. Colombiere judged a further debate at Assembly.

The topic was th a t "The Accumulation of Wealth Denotes Success". Once more the Leaving girls, thi s time Ma rgaret C hee! , Margaretha Visser and Joan Sheehan, defeated the Matrics- Judith Byrne, Jane Magnik and Leonie Kelleher. At a later assembly there wa s another debate between the two Intermedi ate cl asses.

The biggest event was the two debates between C .L.C. and St. Pat's.

At last the Matrics were successful! Debating the issue th at "Contentment is Decadence", Susan Coleman, Mary-Ann e McCudden and Margaret Gilbert defeated the St. P at's representatives. The Leavings were successful too. Their topic was th a t " Man is the Author of His Own Destiny" . C .L.C. has a right to be proud of its deba ters.

As a ch ange from debating, one lunchtime there were speeches in the hall. The girls, Susan Colema n, Ma rgareth:i Visser, Christine O 'Sullivan and G aylene Watts each chose their own to pics and competed against each other. Ma rgareth a Vi sser was the eventua l winner in Si ster M. Rita 's judgment.

Not to be forgotten is "Youth Speaks for Australi a' ', our representative being Mary-Anne McCudden . She was very successful and upon hearing her speech we ca n understand why. She reached the fin a ls and was the eventual runner-up , defeated by a boy from C.B.C., St. Kilda.

TRANSFER OF C.L.C. TO ELTHAM Jn August of this yea r, it was decided as the result of the suggestion of His Grace, the Archbishop, that C.L.C. would continue as a girls' secondary school , not at East Melbourne bul at a new location in Eltham .

One could say th at C.L.C. has literally " moved with the times". When the Sisters of Ch arity first came to Melbourne lowards the end of the last century, they established a school for secondary pupils in Victoria Parade, Fitzroy , between Regent a nd Fitzroy Slr~ets. In 1902, it was decided to transfer the school to Grey Street, East Melbourne, opposite St. Patrick's Cathedral. This too was done literally, as the materi a ls of the school in Victoria P a rade wer:: used in the construction of the school in Grey Street. To avo id confusion with St. Patrick's College , S.J ., the name of the school was changed from St. Patrick 's High School to C atholic Ladies' College and the name of the street later became C athedral Place.

In those days, Scotch College was next door to C.L.C. on the site where St. Andrew's Hospita l now stands, and P.L.C. and C.B.C. "Parade" were close by in Victoria Parade.

Between 1952 and 1956 the old school building was remodelled a nd added to, and the layout of the grounds was altered to provide the pupils with the maximum amount of playing area possi ble on thi s sma ll site.

Now in 1968, with the movement of people to the outer suburbs, it has been decided th at C.L.C. will join its former neighbours in moving out from the city, and will function at Eltham from the beginning of 1971 as a secondary sc hool for girls. A convent will be built on the sa me property and will be called "M:1rycrest".

The site of approximately twenty acres (part of which is shown in the photograph on this page) is bounded on one side by Dia mond Street and on another by the Diamond Cree k. It is situated about five hundred yards from the railway station , so future pupils will not have

transport problems. Eltham , a rapidly developing though still partly rural area, is just fifteen miles from the city, abo ut thirty minutes by car along a road which is a four-lane highway in seve ral pl aces. It can be reached easily from the Greensborough-Research-Hurstbridge area, from the Doncaster-Bulleen-Templestowe area, and from th e Preston-Bundoora area.

Some of our present Form ll a nd Ill pupils who live at Pascoe Vale, Preston, etc. have a lreacty pl anned how to reach C.L.C. at Eltham for their Leaving and Matricul ation years. The travelling time will be much the sa me as now to East Melbourne.

Plans for the new sc hool ' and convent :~ re a lready under way. The Architects a re A. R. Stella and P a rtners, Argyle Place, Ca rlton. It is thought that pl annin g will take a ll of 1969, and th a t construction of th e buildings will begin in January, 1970. We expect that next year's "Caritas" will feature the architects' impression of the new buildings, as by th at time plans should be complete.

BASKETBALL Although only our "C" team reac hed the finals, the basketball season was very successful. All those who took pa rt, both as players and supporters, not forgetting the umpires, enjoyed themselves immensely . The friendship and team support displayed by our five teams entered in the inter-school competition was to their credit and the credit of the school.

This year we welcomed a new coach in ~ister Josepha. We would all like to thank her for her interest a nd advice during the season. This year a new Saturday morning competition was introduced for the juniors. It was very popular, and our two team s "A" a nd "B" which were entered in this competition found it very enjoyable.

Another feature of cur bas ketba ll ~ea son thi s yec-i r was the inter-house competition within the ~c hool. This, I think, is enjoyed by everyone, as it gives the girls who are not i!l the school teams a chance to show their rea l "a bility" .

ANNUAL SPORTS, 1968 The Fitzroy Cricket Ground was not available for the Sports this year. This could have been very awkward for us , had not a good friend come to the rescue. Mr. Woodruff, A1i15ela's father, arranged for us to have the use of the fine Reserve on William stown Road for the Heats, and the Port Melbourne Cricket Ground for the Sports on 24th M arch . Both places were ideal for the purpose; the setting was very pleasa nt (the Cricket Ground was the largest piece of green grass any of us had seen for months!), and the weather, perfect.

Ulass FORM V The door of the Leaving class was opened for yet another year, a nd many of the former Intermedia tes were glad to see that Sister Genevieve was to be class teac her once aga in . Everyone was very glad to hear that our lunches could be ordered from a local sandwich bar. Ah , pies a nd pasties at last!

During the first week the teachers a nd students were prepa rin g tu get to know one anot her once more. Not knowing wh a t the coming yea r entailed, everyone was happy until we saw our sy llabus. W as that a shock 1 On the day of announcing the 1968 Prefects, everyone was excitedly trying to guess who they would be, although there wasn ' t much doubt a bout th e He ad Prefect. Well done , Ma rga ret! Thanks a lso to the rest of the Prefec ts who have done a good job in organizing variou s functions , a nd in helping to keep up the good na me of the school.

At the end of the term the Leavings went on their fir st excursion to Woodstock. What a morning it turn ed out to be! Most of us gave up walking ha lf way , especially as we did not want to look tired for thr Prefects' Dance that night.

Y.C.S. proved different a nd interestin g under th e able guidance ol M a ry-Anne. One o f the function s to help rai se money was the auctioning of the nine Prefects- an hil a ri ous lunchtime . The Lea ving class decided to buy Rosem a ry , a nd so, for two days, we had our "slave" emptying rubbish bins, cleaning th e blackboa rd , a nd of a ll things , polishing the statues, would you believe??

During the second term , everyone really started to get down to work , and many head s were found buried in cooks near the time of those famous exams.

After hearing our m a rvellou s res ult s from second term , everyone reall y started to work, and nobody is looking forward to the end of the term at the Exhibition Building. However, we a re looking forward to going to the pictures, to see " Far from the Madding Crowd", and we are confident that this function will also be a success!

We all enjoy our Maths I lesso ns, but a certain teach e r has trouble with the poor quality o f th e chalk. It insists on writing wron g formulas.

FORM IV Seeing the Port On 10th May two bus load s of Form IV gids left a t 9.30 a. m . for a three-hour tour a round the Port of Melbourne. This trip cost each girl 60 cents, and it was really worth it. As well as shc;wing us the port , the driver gave a running commentary on all we saw. Although the girls were interested in the ships themseives , many eager eyes began to wa nder to the decks- I wonder why?

Our first and only stop , owing to rain, was the Dry Dock. Here the ships are taken complete ly out of the water so th a l necessa ry repairs can be made. We were fortunate to find a dredge under repair when we were there , so we saw how it was being cleaned a nd fixed . Another point of interest a t the dry dock was the huge dent in one end of the d0ck where a ia rge vessel had unfortun a tely headed the wrong way.

Then we were on our way ag::iin , see ing the numerous sheds with different ma teri a ls stored in each. Continuing on, we visited different docks .md saw the provisions for importing and ex porting va rious materials, as well as facilities for dock workers. At one termin a i we lea rnt so me interesting facts a bout the colours of fla gs.

Altogether, the tour was very int e re stin g and informative, a nd it was one good way to use our opera money.

Ordinarily th ey would not be found alive within the school grounds, on a Saturday morning, that is; however one must look a fter one's educational needs, even if it is a bother-and th a t is what the Form IV girls are doing. Fathers' and Daughters' Night On 5th July we ha d our first F a thers' a nd Daughters' Night in the form of competitive ga mes.

On a rriva l, a ll the girls lined up on one side o f the ha ll and the dads on the other. Af ter a swift ta lly by some m a thematica lly minded father , we learnt th a t there were two girls to every father, so te a ms of three were formed . Then th e fun bega n!

D a rts flew a t da rtboa rd s a nd a t ca rd s na iled on a n old door ; golf ba lls were hit into ice cream tins; mini bowls was popul a r and balancing the ba lloon on a duster was a cl ose second .

Laughter and ch a tter filled the hall a nd on one occasion a n irate gentlem a n was seen expressing emotion (w as it excitement or exasperation?) by jumping up a nd down a nd waving hi s ha nd s in the air.

G a me a fter ga me was pl a yed. Then supper was served . Crea m buns, ca kes, luscious sa ndwiches, a nd bottles of Coke and Fanta, or tea if these drinks were not in your line. Soon, tired but ha ppy giggling girls were bundled into ca rs to be driven home , lea ving the nuns to retire to their customa ry quiet.

TV Debut Seeing yourself on television for the first (and second last) occasion is quite a n experience. I'm sure M a ry a nd Colette a nd I all had a complete recurrence of our state of being nervous wrecks which we experienced on the morning of the actua l recording. But this time it was to some degree worse. On Tuesd a y night, friend s, enemies and teachers a like were watching.

It was quite a n exciting round for the specta tors, but as we , the competitors, were quite oblivious of the sco res throughout the entire last round , we didn ' t rea lise until th e fini sh just how close it was. Even though T knew the results on Tuesda y night, I still felt some o f the tension of tapin g morning coming back, when the a udience was our only clue as to how we were progressing in th a t nerve-wrac king fin a l round . I would like to th a nk a ll the girl s who were kind enough to come <•.long a nd sec the programme being ta ped; M a ry , C olette a nd T are very gra teful for the support a nd encouragement they ga ve us. We would al so like to issue a vote of thank s to Sister Una a nd Sister Helen for bestowing upon us the honour of representing C.L.C. in " It's Academic". ~ -Leonie Bo urke (a tea m member).

Held Up! On Wednesda y, 18th September, the Fourth Forme rs went to see ''Ned Kelly", a pl a y produced by Miss McAlpin a nd a cted by the boys of St. Kevin's a nd a few of the Aca demy girl s. The ex act loca tion of the Presbyterian H a ll in Toorak, where Ned was to make his a ppea ra nce , was not known when we ventured on s ur expedition. However, this mino r deta il did not deter us, a nd when we a rrived on th e scene a t a qu a rter to two, we found Ned a nd Co. still wa iting for us. The ma in them e of th e pl ay, na tu ra lly, was the sto ry o f the notoriou s Ned Kelly a nd his ga ng. Justin Shorta l as N ed K e lly did hi s job with the touch of a profess ion a l. Joe Byrne was a lso e xcellently po rt rayed . Th e only fa ult you co uld find with th e pl a y was its len gth- mo re th a n three hours! It was th e refore no surpri se to find th a t by 4.45 the audience had dwindled to a bo ut a qu a rt e r of its o ri gin a l size . FORM Ill Girls runnin g around with pink and blue baby books . . . pictures of babies, clothes, nappies . . . Hein z cans . . scissors, paste, pens. pencils, decorations . . is all the work worth it? Every Thursday we see smiling Sister Rojo, our Motherc raft lecturer, muffled in hat, coal and scarf, laden with baby equipment-bathi ng baby . . . dressing baby . .. feeding baby.

We'll be the best mothers yet!

We enjoyed the Swimming Sports immensely. Our chamion swi mmers were Jilli an and Mary-Jo, and of cour;,e , good old Judy , who won a ·'second". By the way, who were the two "B's" who ne arly drowned in the Toddlers' Pool ?

We looked forward to our Retrea t with pleas ure. Father Desmond proved to be all th at was expected-witty , humourous, sio ry-l elling- told terrific ta les a bout anything and everything.

Day in , day out, week in , week out, th ey wear out the footpath between tram stop a nd sc hool. Who? Our two " lifesave rs", Marika and Julia , with their red "Children Crossi ng" flags. They should get a pri ze for devotion to duty-a voluntary duly, too.

Sadness on the last clay of Term two- Lidia left us to return to England . We presented her with a koal a bear (not a live one') with the School colours around its neck .

Everyone enjoyed the school picnic. Wbo were the St. T.M .'s girls who competed in the under nine races??

Outbreak of measles wiped out our class for a few days, but now everyone's back and everything's back to norm al (poor teachers).

Wh at is the most exclusive, most enjoyable, most efficient, most publicspirited Club in the school? You've guessl!d it-our Broom Club. One look at the hall , any time, any day, and you'll see why.

Member of class overheard to remark that wme Form Ill's are "real nice kids , but completely mad". Perhaps so me harassed teachers are inclined to agree with her? But of course we know you 'll never find such a loy al, friendly , fun-loving class anywhere.

The Dance Form Ill had a swinging time at the Dance this year, with the nuns encouraging us along with their smiles, the pare nts with their enthusiastic clapping after each dance and Mrs. Hanson on the piano doing a ma rvellou s job. And the drummer- he was a "swinger". He didn't stop bobbing up and down from his seat once. The costumes added to all the gaiety: swaggies, a Christmas tree, le Pola, the mysterious Jeanie and that awful Deadly Ernest , who electrified the pare nts with his sudden outbursts of laughter and terrifying chuckle. The Mo nk enjoyed him self at supperwe all saw you slip a cake or two up your sleeves!

FORM II Project Early this year, eight Form II girls entered in a project competition -Plastics of Amtralia. Their painstaking effort was rewarded with the second prize of $30. Tessa and Jane collected the money at Australia House, and it was donated towards books for our Science Room.

The Swimming Sports

Splash, splash, at last they're here, The swimming sports for this year!

One, two, the gun blasts, Everyone is swiming fast!

Someone is winning, someone losing, Judges, musing, time for choosing.

Judges said Aikenhead won, But, of course, we all had fun!

Basketball This year, Form H's basketball teams "A" and "B" managed to pull off the magnificent total of some 5 games out of 18. We're all proud of your excellent work. Congratulations!

Epidemic Earlier this year when the Asian flu struck Melbourne so violently, Form II quickly found that it was not immune! In fact, on 11th July only 11 girls came to school. As Sister Josepha, our class teacher, was also stricken in bed, we were at a loss what to do. Nevertheless, German and Craft classes were attended and the day flew.

Class Dance On the morning of Friday, 25th October, there was great excitement in the classroom, for that evening was Form H's Dance. After morning playtime, German and Craft classes split up and, as Miss Gilchrist, our German teacher, was away, it was decided that the German class should commence decorating the hall. Decorations included paper flowers (our own creation) and paper dolls. We really worked hard and when we were rejoined by Craft girls, the work was much easier. We all agree that it was a swinging success-everything went smoothly.

Visit to the Art Gallery On 11th October, Form II set out for Melbourne's new Art Gallery.

It is an impressive building, very modern, and contains many, many masterpieces on canvas, and in sculpture likewise. We inspected the ancient art of the Eastern and Mediterranean countries, abstract art, "pop" art and much more. One striking feature of the Gallery is a roof of thick stained glass, made up of practically every colour imaginable! After about 1t hours we assembled at the front of the building and, after being counted, said "Au revoir" to the new Art Centre.

A Sad Tale Judy, Lisa, Lou and I, Set out to say a sad goodbye To Sandra, our dear fril:Jld, Who went on a trip that seemed never to end.

We went to see the swimming pool, We thought it was extremely cool; How it was that time did fly Now it was the hour to cry!

Sittin' on the dock of the bay, We watched our Sandra sail away.

C.L.C. OLD COLLEGIANS' ASSOCIATION During 1968 the Association arranged several social functions for their members and friends.

We began the year with the Annual Reunion. On this occasion Benediction was given in the College Chapel and the babies of past pupils were blessed. The office-bearers for the coming year were elected, and all were welcomed by the President.

The highlight of the year was the Annual Ball, held this year in the newly decorated Royale Ballroom on 28th May. Fifteen debutantes trained

by Mrs. Lurline Coombs and chaperoned by Mrs. Betty Stella were presented to our President and Mr. Patrick Wise. Representatives from kindred Associations attended and were welcomed by Mr. and Mrs. Wise, assisted by members of the committee. This was a most successful function, with a large number of Old Collegians attending and enjoying themselves.

The Old Collegians' tennis team competed again in the winter competition of the Public Schools' and Grammarians' Association. Having, at the end of the home matches, finished on top of the ladder, we entered the finals determined to take off the Premiership Cup. The semi-final against Our Lady of Sion proved a great battle, with C.L.C. just taking the points.

We were unlucky in the Grand Final in meeting Luther College, Croydon, as the girls, all being boarders, were far too good for us. By winning the premiership, Luther College will now move up a grade and leave us to win the Cup next year!

Thanks are due to the regular members of the team, Angela Davies, Mary Lou Henderson, Wendy Walsh and Anne Hanrahan. A special vote of thanks go to the girls who acted as emergencies throughout the competition. Any girl interested in becoming a regular member of the team in 1969 should contact the Captain, Helen Delves, or any member of the Committee.

Several theatre nights were held by the Association, and a dinner has been arranged for December. Among the final activities for this year was the Commemoration Mass for the deceased past pupils on the last Sunday in November.
