TUESDAY, 7th FEBRUARY: Back to school, and, as usual. the heat came back with us. We were introduced to new subjects but no strenuous work was done. Welcome to new teachers and students.

WEDNESDAY, 8th FEBRUARY: First sport lesson for the year. New Sports Mistress, Miss Lawson (humane!). Dancing classes are smaller-so budding ballerinas can arabesque to their hearts' content.

THURSDAY, 9th FEBRUARY: After careful consideration votes for Prefects were cast. "To be or not to be?" Miss McAlpin has returned for Drama classes.

FRIDAY, 10th FEBRUARY : Prefects announced. Half holiday to celebrate their inauguration . We acce pt this with resignation.

MONDAY, 13th FEBRUARY: Normal ~ chool day. First singing lesson. Preliminary Y.C.S. meeting to elect office-bearers. Congratulations to Irene McDonald , Ma ree Gilhome and Magda 1en Wuest. All Prefects and Sister Helen are madly collecting nar.1es and ages, since ~ports Day approaches fast!

TUESDAY, 14th FEBRUARY: House Prefects deliver orations to teams at lunch time. Listeners suitably impressed . Result-an enthusiastic scramble for balls. Which Matric Sports Prefect won beauty contest at age of two?? The "Pearl" of the class.

WEDNESDAY, 15th FEBRUARY: Ball games allotted to classes today. Matrics very busy encouraging teams and stapling programmes and ribbons for Heats. Oh! those aching muscles. One girl heard to remark : " I've pulled muscles I never knew I had!"

THURSDAY, 16th FEBRUARY: Balls whizzing in all directionsente r playground at own risk. Matrics amongst the chief offenders.

FRIDAY, 17th FEBRUARY: Private Drama last night was a reminder of Hallowe'en.

MONDAY, 20th FEBRUARY: Sports Heats today, at Fitzroy Oval.

Many thanks to last year's Matrics for helping to make the day a success.

Unfortunately, they couldn't turn off the heat-everyone, I am sure, was , glad to reach home that day.

TUESDAY, 21st FEBRUARY: To the trials of the usual school day was added that of recovering from the Heats-today 's temperature touched 1000. "Water resources" was our day's programme in Geography; I can't say that we found the lesson a thirst-quencher. In Grade 6 today was a student teacher who is doing Dip.Ed . at Monash University. First one we·ve had since Anne Tripcony did some of her teaching rounds here ;! ve years ago.

WEDNESDAY, 22nd FEBRUARY: Another near-century da y. A very unusual event-one certain Sister arrived late for her language lesson.

Maybe the heat was the reason, for she is always waiting ready for classes page four

THURSDAY, 23rd FEBRUARY: Tram strike c ontinu~ :-girls stroll in at every hour after 8.30 a.m. Another hot day-Sister M. Una is very helpful in letting us have a few of our lessons in !he fre sh air and shade .

We finish early today-3.15 p.m.

FRIDAY, 24th FEBRUARY: Hot at first today-cool change hits Melbourne at 2.20 p.m .- a n 8° drop in temperature, plus a storm. Matric girls debated against St. Pat's Matric boys after school , on !he topic " All Power Corrupts". Al as, they lost, but never mind , girls, better luck next time. Father Sullivan , from St. Francis', spoke lo Form Ill 's today a bout C.Y.A. MONDAY, 27th FEBRUARY: After a week of temperatures in the IOO's we are now back to cold weather- typically Me'.bourne . The Tea Drinkers' Club has now commenced its second year of existence . Do a little sleuthing and you'll find out where its he adqu a rters are. Dismissed at 3.15 today beca use our teachers are having a meeting.

TUESDAY, 28th FEBRUARY : No news- must be reporter's day off.

WEDNESDAY, 1st MARCH: Big surprise- the Sisters emerged from the convent in their new white Habits. General approval registered.

THURSDAY, 2nd MARCH: More frantic practice for the Sports.

We march round the grounds to the well-known strains of the Air Force Band . Who is that girl with two left feet?? This morning Father Sullivan spoke to Forms IV, V and YI. Next Sunday is the first C. Y.A. Sunday of the year BUT it is also Sports Day. What happens when you have two con'licting loyaities?

FRIDAY, 3rd MARCH: The Sports are practically upon us. ~.fairies make banners - Cups sparkle juniors run around Matrics Relaxing with House colours flying. There's enough team spirit about to please the most exacting House Prefect.

MONDAY, 6th MARCH: No' Not again! Would you believe it? It's hard to believe, but Marita won the Sports-even though a certain House banner was seen flapping in the breeze during the March . School dismissed at 3.15 p.m. to relieve aching muscles.

TUESDAY, 7th MARCH: Matric Literature class looking forward ~o tonight's performance of " Hamlet" at the R.M.l.T. WEDNESDAY, 8th MARCH: "Hamlet" very good. So was (were?) the ca riolli and meat sauce. Form Ill's went to an orchestral concert at the Town Hall, while the Form II 's visited the Art Gallery .

THURSDAY, 9th MARCH: Many dismal faces at the gloomy prospect of a long week-end.

FRIDAY, 10th MARCH: Tennis teams commenced a "smashing" season today, with the B's winning their match against Sacre Coeur and the A's drawing at two sets each . Congratulations!

MONDAY, 13th MARCH: Labour Day, a welcome holiday for all.

TUESDAY, 14th MARCH : Well, the festivities are over and everyone is settling down to work , as the date for the exams has been set.

WEDNESDAY, 15th MARCH: Many Matric girls are today pondering whether they can swim 55 yards and it is strange, but they are also asking who the lifeguards are going to be.

THURSDAY, 16th MARCH: Congratulations to our A and B tennis teams for defeating Loreto. We can only hope the basketball teams will do the same in the future.

FR.lDA Y, 17th MARCH : Second and final practice today for St. Patrick's Day March. Just as well Bourke Street is not all corners!! Everybody is praying for cooler weather tomorrow.

MONDAY, 20th MARCH: We were addressed at Assembly this morning on the nursing profession , by Miss O'Dwyer. For the rest of the day, CARl1'AS

TUESDAY, 21st MARCH: Many teachers continue io give helpful lectures on the Easter Ceremonies. With Easter only a few days off, these are a fitting topic for discussion.

WEDNESDAY. 22nd MARCH : The Matrics will have their first "live-in" Retreat after Ea~ter at " A \Ye Maria" Retreat House, Essendon .

THURSDAY, 23rd MARCH: Finished school at two o'clock today.

WEDNESDAY, 29th MARCH: Back to school for all except the Ma tries.

THURSDAY, 30th MARCH: Absence of the Matrics noted with dismay throughout the school. Wonder how gate duty went without the Prefects? When the cat's away . . . ?!

FRlDA Y, 3 lst MARCH: Tennis match today against St. Columba's -resulted in a win for C.L:C. Social gathering of the parents of Form IV girls and their teachers in the Hall tonight.

MONDAY, 3rd APRIL: Y.C.S. Bulletin soon to be under way-contributions are being hoped for. Poor Colette is wondering if there is going to be a Bulletin at all. (Maybe next year, Colette!)

WEDNESDAY, 4th APRIL: Once again House Prefects mount soapboxes to rally their teams-this time it's the Swimming Night. Strange, 1-ut in spite of all their eloquence, there is still no re>ponse from the Form IV's. Can't you even DOG-PADDLE??

THURSDAY, 5th APRIL: Swimming lists are " bulging"-especially those concerned with the novelty events. Block bookings announced today for "Spanish Dancers" at the Palais on Saturday week. Miss Downs can look forward to a great response now.

FRIDAY, 6th APRIL: Not altogether social this time-a night out to "A Man for All Seasons"-the play at the Union Theatre, not the film .

MONDAY, 9th APRIL : At Assembly this morning, to mark the beginning of Vocation Week , S.M. Fabian and S.M. Josita from St. Vincent's Hospital showed a film on the Sisters of Charity. After school many girls were seen gathering onto the basketball courts--Sister Helen is determined on getting an ea rly start this year!

TUESDAY, 10th APRIL: Mass for Vocations in the Cathedral.

WEDNESDAY, I Ith APRIL: Basketballers continue to be testedsome very promising material to make up our six teams. First visit by our newly-appointed Chaplain, Father Robinson .

THURSDAY, 13th APRIL: Contestants for St. Columba's Sports are in great shape (it's only the Prefects that are tired!) Aforesaid Prefects ready for psychiatric treatment as more contestants withdraw from the Swimming Sports-and only a few days before the great event! And as if that weren't enough , they (not the Prefects) gave us our monthly reports.

FRIDAY, 14th APRIL: Swimming Sports tonight at Richmond Baths.

55 yards is a L-0-N-G way. Maybe we'll have to distribute kicking boards.

MONDAY, 17th APRIL: Congratulations to Yincentia on their victory in the Swimming Sports (I wonder which House Prefect wrote this?) . All the girls wish to extend a special vote of thanks to Sister M. Una for her permission to hold the sports, and to the pa rents who acted as officials.

Congratulations too, to the Under 14 Relay team who won their event at St. Columba's sports last Saturday, and to the girls who won pennants.

TUESDAY, 18th APRIL: Mothers' Retre at tod ay in th e Convent C hapel. Form Ill's sing for the Benediction. Names of Form Ill girls whose fathers a re ex-servicemen a re submitted tod ay-ten of th e3e are to represent us at the Anzac Ceremony at the Shrine.

WEDN ESDAY, 19th APRIL: Sister M. Una informs the sc hool that specia l bookings have been made for the girls from Forms II to YI to see the award-winning film " A Man for All Seasons", starr ing th at Academy Aw a rd-winnin g actor, Pa ul Scofield! (How's th at for a bit of sensationalism, Sister Helen?)

THURSDAY, 20th APRIL : After Sister M. Un a returned from informing the school about a "character-reading project" being undert a ken

by N.S.W. sc hoolgirls, one of the Matrics wa nted to know whether th e character a nalyses would be returned to the entrants. To which Sister wittily replied, " If you want to know your character, ask me, l'll tell you". Twenty-seven exclamati ons of horror!!

FRIDAY, 21st APRIL: Tenni s cancelled because of rain. Ma rita brought a sponge for afternoon tea by mistake-not th at it wasn't appreciated by a certain group of five girls (that empty feeling, you know!).

MONDAY, 24th APRIL: Asse mbly this morning. We saw a film of th e School Sports. Form Ill's represent us at the Shrine ceremony .

TUESDAY, 25th APRIL : Anzac Day today , and many girls a re seen with their parents as they attend the special Family Anzac Mass in th e College Hall.

WEDNESDAY, 26th APRIL: Aspirin g nurses send in applications for Nursing Bursaries today.

THURSDAY, 27th APRIL : Senior classes informed of the practice dance with the Parade boys in the College H'lll.

FRIDAY, 28th APRIL: First day of exa ms. All those swelled heads. Don't mista ke me, I mean full of knowledge, of course!!

Quite a few girls who were doing exams like this a year ago are coming tonight for the fi rst Deb. practice of the year. We hea r the Old Collegians' Ba ll is in June. , MONDAY, !st MAY : This morning an Act of Consecration to Our Lady was made by the Then - bac k to whole sc hool. exams! MONDAY , 8th MAY: Today, the Senior School formed the inevita ble "two's", or rather "three's", and tramped down Bourke Street. Destin ation?-" A Ma n for All Seasons".

TUESDAY, 9th MAY: A mad rush for dance decorations. Flowers, stars and ba lls. It's quite overwhelming, but wi th a few cool-headed gi rl s we will push onward. Mothers' Day Sta ll well patronised tod ay .

WEDN ES DAY, 10th MAY : Bus load of Leavings goes off to examine the strat a, etc. , of Studley Pa rk . It's a wonder those rocks don 't say: "Hello, C.L.C., seem to have seen you severa l times now!"

THURSDAY, 11th MAY : Last minute prepara tions for Prefects' Dance tonight. Much fu ssing a bout dresses and hair appointments. Form Ill girls lend a hand with decorations. Thanks, girls!

FRIDAY, 2nd JUNE: Feast of the Sacred Hea rt. ~c hool went to two Masses, juniors to the early one and seniors to the 11 .30.

MONDAY , 5th JUNE : Assembly. This week the Form Ill 's are going to start a course of weekly lessons in Motherc ra ft. C learly the next generation is going to be lucky!

TUESDAY, 6th JUNE: What? No news? Don't tell me the reporters have gone on strike already!

WEDNESDAY, 7th JUNE: Apologies from reporters with a firm resolution of amendment. Leavings went on a n excursion to Woodstock today, and we're glad to say th at no one was lost in th e tunnel erosion.

THURSDAY, 8th JUNE : Tonight is the Old Collegia ns' Ba ll at Tudor Court. Some of the 1966 Ma trics, plus other ex-students, will be presented as Debutantes.

FRIDAY, 9th JUNE : The A.C.E. R. seem to be pa rticula rly interested in students born on the 11th of each month. Those co ncerned dutifully hand in their na mes. Your guess is as good as mine .

WEDNESDAY, 14th JUNE: The physical jerks are becoming jerkier each week-Miss Lucy and Miss Lawson have hatched some conspiracy, we think.

THURSDAY, 15th JUNE : Intensive drama rehearsals are still on. Props, including an abacus (any the wiser?), are being collected from here, there and everywhere. The play - Chekhov's "Jubilee" .

FRIDAY, 16th JUNE: Careers Night tonight at Melbourne University.

MONDAY, 19th JUNE: Today at Assembly we saw a remarkable film with an Indian setting. It told the true life story of a Brahmin girl who became a Christian and later a Religious.

Form Ill Parents' Night tonight.

TUESDAY, 20th JUNE: We were very pleased to meet today for the first time Sister M. Ursula, of Potts' Point, Sydney.

Sister visited the school and spoke to Leaving Geography Excursion all the girls m their various to Woodstock . classrooms.

WEDNESDAY, 21st JUNE: A marked improvement noted in Form III-could it perhaps have some connection with the successful Parents' Night last Monday?? Keep it up, girls!

THURSDAY, 22nd JUNE: Social function tonight for parents of Form V and Vl girls-NOT that any improvement is possible or desirable in that direction(!) Our Chaplain, Father , Robinson, will give a talk on this occasion .

FRIDAY, 23rd JUNE: Basketball practice. (Don't get a wrong impression-this isn't the first practice for the season-far from it, as certain old ladies with aching joints, pulled muscles, twisted ankles and other complaints will testify! It's only that our harassed Reporters couldn't find anything more startling to relate.)

MONDAY, 26th .I UNE: Re11orters take umbrage. No news todayoh , except more basketball practice. Apparently they don't think BB is so very important-we know better! pag e eight

TUESDAY, 27th JUNE: Money flows freely as Form V and Vl girls get their periodic book allowance for Junior Government Scholarships.

How much of this, we wonder, will be spent on books??

WEDNESDAY, 28th JUNE: More dancing, more sport, more basketball-in short, another Wednesday. Also, more scholarship book money in circulation.

THURSDAY, 29th JUNE: Feast of Sts. Peter and Paul-a Paraliturgy in Assembly Hall to mark commencement of the Year of Faith. The Readers were very good, and the Paraliturgy really did make a big impression on all.

FRIDAY, 30th JUNE: Good luck to the Basketball teams tomorrow -especially C team which so far is undefeated. Can they keep it up?

MONDAY, 3rd JULY: Staff Meeting this a fternoon with early dismissal. Helps Mondayitis.

TUESDAY, 4th JULY: At Y.C.S. General Meeting today ideas ftowed freely on the topic of the forthcoming Y .C .S. Week and the events therein, notably the concert.

WEDNESDAY, 5th JULY: Migration of basketball teams to Acadmey for a friendly(?) match . We draw in both games. No recriminations.

THURSDAY, 6th JULY: The A basketball team is, alas, slowly falling by the wayside (not literally of course). But the C team is keeping the old flag flying-still undefeated.

MONDAY, 10th JULY: Assembly. Father Muirhead, from St. Pat's, addressed the school on the subject of the P.T.A.A., or the League of Reparation to the Sacred Heart. Many thanks, Father.

TUESDAY, I Ith JULY: Dress rehearsal for our play in the Drama Festival. The play, as you will remember if you were concentrating on your reading of this Diary, was Chekhov's "Jubilee" . The rehearsal seemed to go over very well with the school. The point is, of course-will it go over well with the judges? Good luck, girls!

THURSDAY, 13th JULY : Miss McAlpin away today, so no Drama.

Just as well-we're weary after last night. The performance was very good, a lthough we didn 't win. Actually we don 't mind letting someone else shine for a change!

FRIDAY, 14th JULY: Last minute instructions to girls going to Ma ree G ilhome's House Pa rty tomorrow night. We hope no one gets lost in the wilds of Syndal.

MONDAY, 17th JULY : Assembl y. Angel a lets school hea r the speech she will give tomorrow night in the Juni o r C hamber Competition " Youth Speaks for Australi a". She should do well!

TU ES DAY, 18th JULY : Y.C .S. "Reco rd Hop" in Hall. Leavings go to see " Macbeth ". 'To be or not to be?"---excuse me, l mean, " If 'twere done when 'ti s done" or better still , "Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow" . Sorry, th at's the best I can do-I'm only a Matric Lit. student!

WEDN ES DAY, 19th JULY: Basketball teams A a nd C went to Academy for more practice matches. Two victories to us this time, but with our usua l modesty, we a re trying to keep this quiet.

MONDAY, 31st J ULY: Rejoicin g today-there's a holid ay tomorrow on account of the Mass a nd Luncheon for th e Religious of the Archdiocese to celebrate the arrival of our new Archbishop.

WEDNESDAY, 2nd AUGUST: -We had to count our yea rs today, as our ages were wanted for the census forms.

THURSDAY, 3rd AUGUST: Fifteen Matrics represented C .L.C. today at the Ca thedra l for the Archbishop's Mass. There were sc hools present from the whole of Victoria.

FRIDAY, 4th AUGUST: Addressed at specia l assembl y today by exstudent Ann Dwyer. Ann did Leaving in 1965 a nd then took out a n American Field Service Schol arship in the States for twe lve months. We heard all about sc hool s in America: a nd were quite fasci nated by Ann 's accent!

MONDAY, 7th AUGUST: T.Q. Tests for Middle School. N ow the truth comes out!

TUESDAY, 8th AUGUST : Many tickets, much money and high hopes- a ll for the doggie being raffled for the H ospice. "How mu ch is th at . . . " all right, a ll right!!

FRlDAY, 15th SEPTEMBER: A yo ung woman from the Commonwealth Employment Service came and spoke to the Inters, Leavings and M atr ics today about their careers after leaving sc hool.

MONDAY, 18th SEPTEMBER: Assembly this morning and the Form lll's were presented with their Mothercraft certificates, for a ttending a se ries of lectures by a Mothercraft nurse .l ast term a nd submitting a Project Book on the subject. Judging by the loving care th at went into the projects, this must surely be Form lll's favourite subject-pity you can't take it in Leaving and Matric! Congratulations, girls.

Y.C.S. 1967 The Young Catholic Students' Movement has once again been a prominent feature a mong the senior students at C .L.C. With our truly dedicated President, Irene McDonald, and her senior leaders whose work has been much appreci ated, I am sure each individua l member has benefited and enjoyed the yea r.

This year, to advertise our coming act1v1!Jes, many posters were placed in conspicuous positions throughout the school. I would like to thank those who contributed to the "Milk for India" Appeal, for the response showed the generosity of all. Again the Y.C.S. magazine, the " Bulletin'', was published, through the capable guidance of Colette Mann.

The magazine served a threefold purpose. lt supplied the Y.C.S. with much needed funds; it cleared some of the headaches our treasurer, Magdalen Wuest, was having, and most important of all , it gave enjoyment to the readers.

Y.C.S. Week was held in July and the activities ranged from a record hop to a Y.C.S. concert. A basketball match between the Academy and C .L.C. was also a rranged. Unfortunately, however, C .L.C. was narrowly defeated by one goal. Many aspiring young enterta iners performed in the concert, and by the applause we can justly say it was a great success.

Throughout the year S.M. Theresa Joseph , our religious assistant, has been very helpful to us, a nd on beha lf of a ll the 1967 members, I wish to express our gratitude to her.

GERALDINE ABSALOM: Always ready with just the right advice , Geraldine has been a great help to frustrated people. In September she took two weeks off for a trip to New Zealand-a natural thing for our prize geographer to do. Geraldine is one of the most enthusiastic members of the T.D.C. MARITA BALL: Captain of the winning house, Mari ta, and Equal Dux of the School. She is very interested in the Port Melbourne football team, but it seems to us that the Ba lls have enough starters for a football team of their own. Marita has been at C.L.C. for 13 years and could be classed as the friendliest girl in Matric.

KRISTA BLAKENEY: Yet another proof that we import only quality.

Krista came to C.L.C. last year from St. Vincent's College, Potts' Point. Equal Dux and guiding light of the Literature class, we wonder do all ex-New South Welshmen displ ay such an interest in the wildlife of swans and berries?

DEBORAH BYE: Our little Freud, who has psychologically analysed Hamlet and come to the conclusion that he has a mother complex-much to the bewilderment of Sister Theresa Joseph . Debbie is aiming for Monash next. year and is a certainty to succeed.

MATRICULATION CLASS NOTES ANG ELA CA PICCHIANO: Com monl y ca lled by our geogra phers "Koppens prodigy". Despite her aching back, Angela still see ms to be on good terms with her tennis. A promising orator, she ca pably represented us in "Youth Speaks for Australia".

C HERRILL C LEAR : C herrill , quite a veteran at C.L.C., suffers from se vere frostbite-even in Summer?!! She is a non-drinkin g member of the Tea Drinkers' C lub . Annu al fee:-half-pound of tea. C herrill's bright remarks in class co uld only se rve to render her as witty.

TH E RESE DUNCAN : Therese's one am bition is to know what the future holds for her. We think th a t since she has recently joined a wa lking club, Therese could very well be a future Australian walking champion.

Therese also has a way with water and oil colours.

RITA DZIUKAS : Rita is our "stylist-cum-Twi ggy" of the class. Also she is a budding woman of Ca nterbury . Have you hea rd of the "Twelfth Night"? Well , she could not get past the ''Third (K)Ni ght" . An apt ad jective to describe her would be excitable but a lways a ha rd and diligent worker.

LORETTA FASAN : One of our ass ista nts to the Head Prefect , Loretta is a lso an addicted Tea Drinker. Sometimes her interest in socce r tea ms seems to excel her interest in school. The best way to describe her, we think , wo uld be to say th at she is fiery , but always a help in a cri sis, e.g., da nce organization.

ROSA GALBO: The angel in the class-room, the "aereated" de mon on the bas ketba ll court. Although quiet , Rosa's wit is not to be underestimated. Next year Rosa plans to do Prima ry teac hin g, a nd she is sure to succeed.

MARE E GILHOME: Capta in of Loyola and tireless worker of M atri c.

She will ma ke the perfect nurse for she is a lways ready with a cheerful smile and kind word. We think the word to describe Maree is "chirpy"'.

ROSLYN GUY: Roslyn represents one-qua rter of the Maths class a nd the "probability" of her doin g well is high. Her powers of oratory a re somewh at overwhelming as she has proved, representing us well in the Speech Craft Festival a nd in the c horus of " Mnrder in the Cathed ra l".

GALL HENKEL : Seven years at C.L.C., Gail is a ha rd-wo rking, completely confused Sports Prefec t. She a lso has the best self-invented vocab. in the French class. We believe she has problems not only with people on the trams but with doors too' IRENE McDONALD: A ha rd-wor kin g Sports Prefect, Y.C.S. President and Ca pta in of the A Grade basketball tea m , Irene has been completely selfless in her dedication to every tas k put to her. Wh at is it she spends her time chasing . . . basket balls, tennis balls, Y.C.S . leaders or . .. ? Irene has been a t C.L.C. for six yea rs.

PAM McNEILL: Our indescribab le comic whose bubble a nd vivacity kee p the Ma tric class a live with witty and often misplaced comm ents.

MARGARET MALONEY: Our dea r Head Prefect, who has been 13 years at C .L.C., is comm only called "the hard worker", and is an inspi ra-

ti on to a ll the class. Margaret is a terrific girl who will go out of her way for a nyone. Her motto for 1967 has been-"All HEADS think alike" .

COLETTE MANN: Our pi g- ta iled actress, full of wit, who enjoys a "confused" socia l life. Colette is the ca pab le captain of Aikenhead and her followers will be pleased to kn ow th at she intends to do Law next yea r, a lthough her ma in ~ mbition is to be a "star" goalthrower. Thirteen yea rs al C.L.C., she is a n inspiration to all.

NOELLE MANWARING : D oes not have much lo say in class but we know she must be ta kin g it a ll in as her results show. Perhaps " RMIT geology" is a good gro undin g. Besides a ll this, Noelle is a girl a lways ready to help, especially in clea ning the room.

PATRI CIA MURRAY : Has been at C.L.C . since Form II. Her favourite song at "specia l choi r" is " D::mny Boy"-the music critics don't even give it three go ngs' Pat is a very friendl y girl a nd sees the good in everyone.

J ENNIFER O'CONNOR: Our little "sun shine girl". Jenn y relieves the c lass of Mondayitis with "Cheer up, girls, only five more days to Friday". We a re sure Jenn y will be a ca pab le housewife, as she has had plenty o f prac ti ce ma king tea this year.

DENIS E SPURLING: ~ he is the only one in th e c lass with her driving licence. Den ise is a lso a member of the se ni or tenni s team a nd a found ati on member of the T.D.C. Being sc ientifica lly inclined she hopes to pursue this fi eld.

SANDRA STONE: Wh at's black and white and red a ll over? Sandra, on certa in occasions. She lite ra lly blushes to the roots. Sandra would best be desc ribed as one of the best listeners and "finder-outers" in th e class as well as being a very sweet girl.

JENNIFER STOROR: Is our inspirati on for glamour because she is the "model of the class". Jennifer is a lso ac tive in dra ma , hav ing taken pa rt in the play " Murder in the Cat hedral". She hopes to follow her father 's footsteps in the field of gemology.

NOLA TARDIO : The smallest girl in our class but a dynamic basketba ller.

She ca n only be distin guished from the ball by her pigta ils. The adjective to describe Nol a we think is "profound" for sometimes her mea nin g is a little too obscure for o ur sma ll minds.

EILEEN WALSH : The Matric who travel s fa rthest to school each day and leaves earliest. She is the newest member of the class, having decided to be a day pupil for her last yea r at school. A candidate for Teac hers' College in 1968.

WENDY WALSH : One of the assista nts to th e Head Prefect. She is a lso an accom plished piani st a nd our one a nd only hope for Ca rnegie H a ll.

RETREATS FORM VI The end of the Easter holidays saw the Matrics depart from the routine, bustling life of the school into the peace and serenity of " Ave Maria" Retreat House at Essendon, where we stayed from Tuesday evening until Friday morning.

A live-in retreat was a new experience for most of us and proved to be a very profitable one. Fr. Lake-Smith was extremely helpful and his lectures most interesting. Father's door was always open to anyone who wanted to speak to him on any subject whatsoever.

Our spiritual life was well looked after with daily Mass, Benediction, Confession and other devotions. After each lecture we had discussions at which Father was most helpful in answering all our queries and in opening up new avenues of thought.

The retreat gave us new insight into our role as Christians in the modern world and each girl benefited immensely.

FORM V For the Leavings this year, third term commenced with a two day retreat. This included lectures by Father Lake-Smith, discussions, Benediction and Mass. On the second day we were privileged to receive Holy Communion under both species. The atmosphere at "Ave Maria" is more relaxing than at school and we had time to think, which is normally hard to find. I am sure the girls were glad of an opportunity to communicate with God without the usual tensions of the day, and are looking forward to the "live in" retreat next year.

FORM IV Our Retreat this year took place on 13th and 14th September. Silence during the retreat period was not imperative, thus allowing ample scope for discussion points that had come up during the lectures.

Father Robinson said Mass in the Convent Chapel for us each morning, and during the two days gave us talks on "Christian Living", the theme of our retreat. Father gave us some very practical advice on ways of improving ourselves and our relationships with others. His talks showed how sincerely concerned he is about our welfare, and he certainly did everything in his power to make our retreat such a great success.

We had four other guest speakers during the two days. Mr. Mario Ermacora gave us great insight into the needs of less fortunate people, and children. Mario does a lot of social work among small boys who need help. He is also a constant and welcome visitor to the prisoners at Pentridge. Three points we learnt frorrr his talk were that, as future mothers, we should show our children affection by fondling them sometimes; spare

a few minutes to play with them; and train them to respect property.

Mario felt th at these three matters are much overlooked today, with very drastic and unhappy results.

Our next speaker was Sr. M. Theresa Joseph , a favourite with the girls. We found th at because Sister is w close to us in our daily lives she presented us with just those facts which would help us most, not only this term, but in the future. She spoke about God and our neighbour from a new angle and brought many new ideas to our minds.

Another guest speaker was Aileen McShane, representing the Y.C.W . from Brisbane. Aileen gave us some very practical advice on Christian living in our school and parishes. Her very presence revealed her sincerity and integrity. Here was a young girl who must ma ke a definite impression for good on all with whom she associates.

Our last speaker was John Finlayson , a Y.C.W. representative from our own city. John was certainly a dynamic personality. He told us about the importance of being friendly to everyone, not only to those we like.

On the whole, the retreat was much more interesting than usual, and it has had interesting after-effects. Every Tuesday, a few minutes of our religion time a re given to quiet prayer in the Chapel.

FORM III 23rd and 24th October were the days chosen for Form Ill Retreat.

Monday morning in the classroom found eighty-odd very excited girls talking their heads off at the last minute. All faces wore an expression of "What's going to happen?"--even the three girls who had made a Retrea t before .

On the stroke of nine, the chatting ceased and one after the other, the girls filed into the Chapel. Father Marcellus, a Franciscan Father, was very nice and everyone felt very much at ease after meeting him. A lecture followed the introduction and the subject was "What a Retreat Is" . We had six lectures a ll told , and they were all very interesting.

Confessions were heard three times a day and if a girl wasn't going to Confession, she was allowed to have free time in which she could read a book or just plain think. I myself found this a great help, as I could think over what Fr. Marcellus had said in the lecture.

Then came lunch-time-and with it, an uproar! Silence could be broken at lunch-time-and I think that is enough said.

Following lunch was a discussion and again this gave everyone a few points which she hadn 't been very clear about before. Also, we had Mass, Benediction and the Rosary each day.

Generally, our first Retreat was a great success, and each. girl, I am sure, is looking forward to our next.

CARITAS

DRAMA AT C.L.C. We had a very busy year for drama this year with the Drama Festival in July and the production of "Murder in the Cathedral" in October. For the festival we produced the Chekhov play, "The Jubilee".

The cast was headed by Liviana Vergendo and Colette Mann, with supporting roles played by Michele Turner as the bank manager's wife, and Loretta Fasan as the old whining woman. The production of the play was in the hands of capable Miss McAlpin ably assisted by Therese Duncan.

Employees of the bank were played by Margaret Gilbert, Robyn Stokes, Cherrill Clear and Christine Beasley. The big night was the 12th of July and, although the adjudicator was not enamoured of the choice of play, all girls did extremely well and the audience appreciated the "burlesque" comedy.

The Drama Festival was won by St. Kevin's College and in October, eight girls from Leaving and Matric combined with the boys to present the entire play for a season of two nights at the Academy Hall. The Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas a' Becket, was played superbly by Justin Shortal, the Four Tempters and Knights were ably portrayed by

Grahame McDonald, Chris Hanson, Garry Smith and Peter Mclure. The harrassed priests were played extremely well by Tim Nolan, Gerard Butcher and David Loftus, and the comic part of the messenger was portrayed admirably by Ian Hopwood. The lucky girls chosen for the parts of the wailing Women of Canterbury were Rita Dzuikas, Jennifer Storor, Margaret Malone.y, Robyn Stokes, Patricia Canavan, Pamela McNeill, Roslyn Guy and Colette Mann. After many rehearsals and private practices, the 5th and 6th of October arrived. On the first night all went well except for two minor slips but Friday night was acclaimed by all as "brilliant".

The drama critic from the "Advocate", Mr. Frank Murphy, praised highly the production and performance and described our humble chorus as "excellent". One person we cannot omit from the list of credits is Paul di Pasquale. He played the role of Miss McAlpin's right arm and was very strong in his portrayal. Paul organized music, sound effects and rehearsals and even went as far as snuffing the candles at the end of the play. Also not to be forgotten were the Sisters at the Mercy Convent and the boarders, whose hospitality quite overwhelmed us. All considered the production was a wonderful success and we hope will be the beginnings of combined drama in all Catholic schools.

JOTTINGS FORM V Although A.P.'s and G.P.'s have caused 5light friction in the st11dentteacher relationship , S.M. Genevieve and the Leav ing Maths I class have persevered . Sister a nd her A , B a nd C books have fought the despair wrought by those merc iless revision sheets. We hope most of the class "have got the ide a"! Through Sister's intimacy with the ex a miners we have become quite attached to these vicious a liens.

Apa rt from the usual spilt paint in the a rt room , other casualties were a few of the refugees from the convent kitchen (a pumpkin and two cucumbers) which developed a slight mould. Under Sr. Marie Louise's expert supervision our lightning sketches were finished with the help of a little im ag ination. We a re all sure th at our exhibitions have been a delight to the more educated members of the sc hool.

To do German was a great honour indeed. We were e ven given a title , "Die . . . . " (well , perh a ps it was only the definite article preceding our names, but it sounded importa nt). The climax of the year was the Goethe Poetry Competition, with m a ny lunch hours spent practising for the few minutes we would be in the room convincing the examiners we were worthy of a n honourable mention. With the "Goethe " behind us we were a ble to rel a x a nd jot down the ingredients for Miss Schmid's goulasi:h.

The new biology course ca me , was seen a nd h as gone, never to fill Si. Joa n's, a t least for us, with its exotic odours aga in (much to the delight of the rats and the rest of the a nim a l kingdom) . We must say that for a ll of us this course has really bee n somethin g quite different. In read ing the introduction to the m ain or rather only textbook we see th a t "each chapter has been wr itten for you to read and, perhaps, e njoy " and indeed enjoy it is just what we did. We were quite proud of our biology room which boasted two refrigerators , one incubator a nd one "aqu a rium " . In fact, the three groups which made up the biology class of 1967, ingeniously calling themselves the "Branns'', the " In-Group" a nd th e "Others" a re set to en joy the same relaxed atmosphere aga in next year, th a t is, they arc hoping to.

Under the skilful eye of Sr. Marie Louise the craft c lass has produced many interesting garments. Suits, dresses , coats, nightwear show the many laboured hours spent in m a king them. Th e c reativity a nd a rtistry ca n be seen in the decorative articles a nd projects presented by the girls ·who only h ave to wait until Ja nu ary to see if it was worth the effort.

Modern European History has been a n exc it ing subject for the Leavin gs this year. We have noted Sister M. Theresa Jo£eph 's prowess as both an histori a n a nd a philosopher. With Sister we shared many adve ntures :tike the Pa nam a Scandal a nd World War I, and we met such awesome c ha racters as Bismarc k, Mussolini, Hitler a nd Lenin.

Each day the e lite of the sc hool gather together in St. .Joan's, o ur casualty room, to -;iursue their study of the classics. There the a vailable hosp it a l bed e nab led our enormous "C lass of five to survive the "d uri la bores" of Sr. M. Helen. Due to our teacher's acting ability one fortunate student was able to win first pri ze in the Latin Reading C o:11petition . After tramp-

ing the city streets in a vain dfo rt to obtain some fortifying nourishment for the Latin Schools' Night at the University, we released our energy in the singing of La tin songs, one of them set to the t une of "Georgy Girl " !!

Despite th e attractio ns of other subjects Geogra phy ·: a ptured the hearts of thirty-four st udents. Our hi ghly inte lligent c lass was the µride and joy of S.M. Theresa Joseph. Du e to the untirin g efforts of o ur excellent teacher we found Geog ra phy lessons very interesting. The class during the course of the year embarked on a ser ies of globe-trotting ad ventures , hoppin g from geology at Studley Park to come rvat ion of m il at Woodstock , a nd the study of s heep farming a t Shoreham , while we narrowly escaped being recruited as sa ilors during the exc ursion to the Port of Melbourne.

E nglish this ye a r? We ll , we ' ve had deba tes, discussions, film , recordings, and even some plain ordinary study now a nd then! A memorable(!) occasion was th a t of our visit lo the Princess Theatre to see " Macbet h" .

H av in g studied thi s tragedy a nd li sten ed to the recording of it, we were all prepared for a soul-stirring performance. Alas. Lady Macbe th h ad some difficulty with her gracefully Oowing go wn , which was somewhat upsetting. The b'.l ttle sce nes of Act V were a trifle disturbing, too , with dead bodies being myst e riously d ragged off the stage, sturdy axes suddenly falling to pieces and a rather timid battle to the death between Macbeth and M acd uff. Still , we assure you th a t our ideas on the pl ay haven ' t been so completely ruined as to pre ve nt us from writing m agnificent answers on the Literature paper.

These "sc ientists" wander aro und with the distinct m a rkings of their calling-holey pinnies, even holey hands. As a re sult of the work of the chem!stry class the supply of glassware is sadly depleted , a nd it will only be a m a tter of time before our science room will be no more. Although lacking the physic a l excitement of chemistry , Physics a nd Maths II have been quite ment a lly stimulating?!! May we now take the opportunity to request padded benches if we are lo spend as much time being mentally stimulated by the Physics and Maths II th a t miraculously appears on the wa ll , if a certain yellow pencil has not disappeared .

JOTIINGS Who is that girl whose voice we hear from the music room while everyone else is busy practising exercises at sport?

Congratulations to Carolyn Weir for gaining a Very Honourable Mention at the Alliance in French poetry.

Lesson highlights: Outside sketching is usually interesting, but our results arc fatal. . . . We were visited recently by a slimy, slithery flathead (fish) which was later dissected in class.

There is one broken-hearted sparrow in Melbourne since Sister Claver would not let him sit in on the History lesson . . . a cup Inters at U .S.S. Turner Joy. of tea before the Commonwealth Scholarship exam was very refreshing, even if not inspiring - thanks, Sister!

Art and craft lessons are most enjoyable-many things happen there.

Sometimes you even see a girl falling off a chair!

With S. Marie Louise the girls in the Art Class visited the Art Gallery to view the American Art Exhibition. This Exhibition had received so much publicity and criticism; however, most of us enjoyed seeing these exhibits, especially when at the end of the term we found a rather long, juicy question on American Art on our exam paper!

Form II brought us a big law case to solve from Shakespeare's ''The Merchant of Venice''. Gratiana, the handsome young suitor of Nerissa, was the hit of the show, and well he knew it, taking bows in between verses.

One afternoon the Form Four Latin class attended a Latin Afternoon held at the University High School, Parkville. It proved to be every bit as interesting as Sister Helen had promised us it would be!!

During Second Term we went to the Henry Lawson Exhibition at the La Trobe Gallery. The walk down to the gallery proved to be an interesting trip through the back streets of the city.

Education Day on 17th August proved to be a great success. The work was displayed in the classrooms this year. There was friendly rivalry between the two Form lV's and "borrowing" of display work.

At the school picnic held at Mt. Evelyn on 22nd October, the Form Fours challenged the Sisters to a game of baseball , and believe it or not, the Sisters won!

We had the opportunity to hear the voices of the Viennese Boys' Choir at the Palais, St. Kilda. We- were lucky to hear them because our seats were the furthest from the stage, and probably the highest in the building!

Wednesdays are quite eventful, by no means the least interesting period being Father Robinson's Religion lesson. We have enjoyed Father immensely and hope to see him again next year.

Every Thursday Miss McAlpin gives us her time and experience to see that we say our verses beautifully for Speech Night. Lately our lessons have been harder on the leg muscles than on the vocal chords, although some typical Australian music is sure to soothe them. "Waltzing Matilda", however, has been rejected as being too typical!

We are proud of the talent of the Art class, as their artistic ideas were brought to light when they decorated the hall for the Junior Ball .

Most of the credit should go to Janis, Pauline, Christine and Elizabeth.

Perhaps the most unusual excursion we had this year was a visit to the American destroyer, "Turner Joy'', which berthed in Melbourne during Coral Sea Week. Souvenirs were proudly displayed at school the next day.

Our thanks to the American Navy for making our inspection of the "Turner Joy" possible, and also for the courtesy and good will shown by the sailors who acted as our guides on the ship. We were offered refreshments on board, and it was typical of the consideration shown us when a car was placed at the Sisters' disposal to return to C .L.C. And now, we would like to thank all members of the staff for a happy and interesting year in Form Four during 1967.

Great rejoicings-our signed petition has at last been heard, and we can now hear Sister M. Una's voice over our loud-speaker-Sister Helen has at last removed the picture which used to be in front of it.

We told you we were geniuses! Another two records a re now added to our long list of previous triumphs-this time in the Latin and French fields.

One girl has become very attached to the fire extinguisher at the back of the room and has phondly called it "Phred".

A Spanish lady-a tramp-a house on legs!! What's this? Don't fa int, it's only our Fancy Dress ball! This function , especially the supper, was enjoyed by a ll present.

Who's the girl who writes the date on the board day . . . after . . . day? Is she trying to ma ke the year go faster?

This yea r we've put our knowledge of English to practica l(?) use.

Firstly we tried debating-we definitely won't reac h Pa rli ament! Next we tried "creative writing" which turned out a bit too creative in pa rts-so much so that we crea ted a few new grammar rules and words (DIG!).

"A song's not a song until you sing it"-and did they sing it!! The New Twenties have had everybody except .. . "Brenda, Diane and Ruth" -but they're coming!

FORM III ST. PIUS Memorable occasions this yea r have been our excursions-to the Science Exhibition, to the America n Art Exhibition, to the Vienn a Boys' Choir. Then we had visits from some very interesting people - Mario Ermacora , a full-time Y.C.W. worker a nd Probation Officer at Pentridge, with whom we were very impressed . It made us feel grateful for our own wonderful homes and also showed us some of the causes of child delinquency. We presented Mario with a pile of old 78 r.p.m. records we rooted out of the garages at home, to ma ke things a bit more interesting for the prisoners. Second Term saw us eagerly sticking in pictures of baby in bath , baby in pram, baby being fed , etc., in oy,r Project Books to impress Sister Godsell that we really did deserve those Mothercraft Certificates. Dr. Spock has nothing on some Form Ill enthusiasts!

Other talents possessed by St. Pius girls include a special aptitude for singing folk hymns (thanks to the lessons we had on tape from the St. Columba's Form Ill's-where does S.M .L. get her bias for St. Columba's?

We think we know) ; dressing up for Fancy Dress Balls-we think some girls' appearances were immensely improved that night. We don 't always shine at Science but when it comes to Science Posters-pity Necia wouldn't let us help her spend the prize money. Famous works of a rt were produced this year in the Art Room, one of the most outstanding being Toni Keen an's plaster cast of her hand--Oid she see the film ''Trouble with Angels"?-other prize pa intings (on the Art Room floor) did not seem to meet with teacher's approval and had to be removed with sand paper.

After our efforts at sketching each other, some girls lost their best friends -only those sketched by Cla re could be sure they wouldn't be insulted.

Two days' treat for teacher when we went into Retreat. Our first attempt, and we don 't think we did too badly. Don't as k anyone else's opinion. Discussions were very lively (Fr. Robinson trains us well on Wednesdays). We wondered if Father Marcellus would need a Retreat himself to recover.

FORM II ST. AGNES 1967 bas been a good year for one and all in Form 11 St. Agnes . As well as having school affairs such as our sports, swimming and the ball, our class teacher took us to a couple of other places. Our latest was the Fire Station, where five of us nearly had to spend the night up in the tower, as the fireman who took us up forgot to push the button for the lift to come up again.

After our trip to the museum two "ladies" decided to measure Phar Lap. Result-sticky hand prints a ll up the case!

A.N.A. may have Susan Jones-but we have the celebrated Beverley Jones, who was hostess at our film tour of other countries.

You've heard of the "Black H and Gang". Well , we had the "G reen H and G a ng" after Art one Wednesday. Some girls decided to paint their history projects with the ir hands. They found out too late that the green paint was indelible.

The highlight of the school year was, in our opinion, the MatricForm U St. Agnes Basketball match . We lost by one goal-but who kept the score??

We challenged the Matrics to a basketba ll game, They looked pretty wea k, but they came and they came.

We cheered and booed, and thought it not fair When up came the Matrics and won without care .

After all, we did invite them to play Is "Thank you, we enjoyed it" all they could say?

We LET them win without any fuss , But they thought it was because they were better th an us!

What a year' We're exhausted-poems, projects, films, discussions, group activity, town plannin g - work , work a nd still more work, yes, even on Show D ay. The fact is, our teac hers just can't live without us!!

Who's Who? Who's the girl who couldn't stay on the horse at the picnic? Who nearly joined the Mummy Depa rtment al the Muse um ? Who caused a stir by ru shing off to hospita l, ma kin g us get corns on our knees with a ll the prayers we sa id for her?

Dough is all right-so long as it's used in the a rl class to c reate bea uty, not war!

Poor Ma rga ret-did you ever fin:! a ll the Jaffas you lost when we went to see " A Man for All Seasons"?

Everyone loved being in Form 11 , even Bimbo, Frankina's puppy. He came bac k a second day lo complete any damage he'd left undone!

Three cheers for the best c lass in the school! Well, what do you know , we're the only ones cheering!!

The Fathers' Association , which meets at the College on the first Friday of each month at 8 p.m., ha!l a successful year, socially and financially. The College Sports held at the Fitzroy Cricket Ground on Sunday, 5th March , was the first function with which the fathers helped.

At the June meeting the election of office-bea rers took place. The Executive elected being:President: Mr. R. Chee!.

In conjunction with the Ladies' Auxiliary, two Social Dances were held in the College Hall , the first on Saturday, !st July , the second on Saturda y, 30th September.

On Sunday , 22nd October, the College Picnic was held at Mt. Evelyn Picnic Reserve. A most enjoyable day was had by all those who attended .

At our December meeting last year the Association handed to the Rectress, Sister Una, a cheque for $400.00. The Executive would like to thank all fathers who have ass isted and supported the Association during the past twelve months, and hope for their continued support next year.

FORM I In the inter-sc hool under 12 rel a y, C.L.C. was successful, with five Form l's in the team-Judy Toohey, Judy Bereczky, Jennifer Mackenzie, Pat Baquie and Lyn Riley.

Congratul ations to Maxine Ruthven and Ca therine Doyle who won the doubles in the Junior Tennis C ha mpionship, and to Marita House which won the Junior Basketball C hampionship.

Our excursion around the Port of Melbourne was very interesting.

With Mrs. Boswell we were ta ken on boa rd the U .S.S . Canberra and were shown over the ship. We also visited the Dry Dock and were shown the boiler room.

On August 8th, thirty-seve n of our class were enrolled as Crusaders of the Blessed Sac rament.

Our dance in October was very enjoyable, particularly the Presentation Dance, a Mexican H a t Dance.

S.M. Colombiere and Mrs. Boswell took us to visit the pla neta rium at the Museum-very interesting.

We enjoyed our school picnic at Mt. Evelyn with the Sisters a nd our families. Congratulations to the Fathers' Committee who organized it.

CATHOLIC LADIES' COLLEGE MOTHERS' AUXILIARY The Mothers' Auxiliary, under the guidance of its efficient President, Mrs. Kevin Maloney , and her Executive, can once again report a successful and very sociable year. Our thanks must go to the loyal mothers of the Auxiliary for without their help our functions could not be a success. The friendly atmosphere has continued right through the yea r and our Christmas Luncheon on 5th December brings to a conclusion a happy year for us all.

The financial success came from the well attended functions held during the year, namely: A Smorgosbord Luncheon and Millinery Parade at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Russ Pearson; several Theatre Nights; Annual Luncheon and Millinery Parade at The Southern Cross Hotel; Dances in College Ha ll ; Luncheon at Menzies Hotel ; an inform a l Luncheon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ron Reynolds; Dinner Dance at 'The Princeton" ; Morning Coffee, plus Floral Demonstration at the home of Mrs. Cath Nolan.

Our Annual Retreat was held this year at the College and our most sincere thanks to the Sisters of the College for the co-operation extended to us.

A treasure hunt was a rranged and all enjoyed them se lves lookin g for pine-cones, rubber bands, sporting globes a nd other objects.

Towa rd s the end of the afternoo n everybody packed up to leave, and before long C.L.C. people could be seen headi ng home along Ca nterbury Road or the Ma roondah Highway or some other route.

THE SCHOOL PICNIC On Sunday, 22nd October, cars from a ll parts of the globe headed towards Mount Evelyn. Many took devious routes but they eventually came across the sign which read: "C.L.C. Picnic Here"-exactly where, they did not know, but, dauntless, on they pressed.

The aroma of barbecued steak and sa usages passed through the a ir, while people either stretc hed on the grass, or sat at tab les, happily eati ng their lunch . The presence of a creek excited the hearts of some enterprising people. I hear certain Intermediate girls enjoyed their little swim.

After lunch many races were organized for the little people at the picnic. These energetic ones a mongst us were rewarded with chocola te frogs. Siamese races followed and we were very surprised to find that some people actually m anaged to cross the finishing line. The sack races, a lso, were very a musing - those sac ks really looked very becoming on some girls.

The most exciting part of the afternoon was the game of baseball between the Sisters and the girls. On studying the line-up one must rea ll y compliment Sister Ma rie Roberta on her excellent batting. Another ou tstanding fe ature of the game was Sister Colombiere's brilliant catch . The other members of the Sisters' tea m were Sister Theresa Joseph, Sister Helen a nd Sister Rit a.

THE OLD COLLEGIANS' ASSOCIATION The Ca tholic Ladies' College Old Collegians' Association's activities for 1967 began with the Annual Reunion on Sunday, 27th February, 1967.

Benediction was given in the College Cha pel , a nd the babies of past pupils were blessed. Afternoon tea followed , and an enjoyable time was spe nt in renewing old friendships . The Office-Bearers for 1967 were elected and our President, Mrs. Antonine Wise, welcomed the new Committee members.

A Theatre Night at the Comedy was held in April , and a ll those who were ab le to attend thoroughly enjoyed the mu sica l " Ha lf a Sixpence" .

The Association's Annual Ball was held a t "Tudor Co urt", Ca ulfield , in June. Nineteen debutantes, ch a peroned by Mrs. Willi am Speakman , were presented to our President a nd her hu sba nd , Mr. Patrick Wise. The hi ghlight of the evening was th e unusu a l Present ation Dance to the theme from " Zorba the Greek". Mr. and Mrs. Wise, a long with other members of the official pa rty , welcomed represe nt atives from kindred Associations.

A Dinner, arranged by the Committee members, was held at the Australia Hotel in October, and the Association's activities for the year closed with the Commemorat ion Mass for deceased past pupils on the last Sunday in November.

The Inter-school events aroused great excitement with Saint Columba's winning four Jnter-school events and C,L.C. winning two. Then followed the Matriculation relay, with present pupils competing against girls from past Matric. classes. The 1966 team won in fine style, with the 1967 team a close second. Congratulations to the winning team-good to see you can still get up a run.

After the final ma rch past , it was announced that Marita had won the Sports, to the jubilation of all the girls in the winning house. Loyola was second , and Yincentia and Aikenhead filled third and fourth places respectively. However, congratulations ,must go to Loyola on winning the Senior House Cup and Aikenhead for their successful Inter-house relay teams.

Finally, on behalf of all the girls I would like to thank Sister Una, and all the Sisters, the many fathers who helped on the oval as officials, the mothers serving in the refreshment stalls, for their efforts in making the Sports Day a big success.

Also congratulations, Prefects, on work well done.

C.L.C. SPORTS DAY, 1967 The annual school sports was held this yea r on 5th April , at the Fitzroy Cricket Ground . It wa s a perfect day , with sunshine flooding the oval and m a king the scene very decorative.

Some enthusiastic Prefects could be seen very early in the morning putting up the decorations of the four competing houses. When they had finished their labours, the scene was set for an exciting day. Girls began a rriving early, with enthusiastic and proud parents and the grandstands quickly filled, as people streamed into the oval.

Tension was high among the girls, and the thought in everybody's mind was: Which team would win the coveted school cup this year?

Marita House commenced the day well , by winning the Marching, with Aikenhead House a close second. This win was rather a surprise, for Aikenhead has long been renowned for its excellent marching.

Spirits were high and each girl was determined to try and win a few points for her house, to help it on to victory. The novelty events were as fun-packed as ever, with all the girls enjoying them immensely. Then followed the ball ga mes and finally the relays. Aikenhead won the Senior fnter-house Relay , Yincentia the Under 14 Inter-house, and Aikenhead the Under 12 Inter-house. These ball games and relays were very important as far as adding points to each house towards their final tally, and also CARI'l'AS

BASKETBALL The 1967 basketball season did not bring the long-awa ited premiership for C.L.C. However, the six tea ms which were entered in the Catholic Colleges' Basketball Associat ion did well and we are proud of these girls.

The enthusiasm of the younger girls together with the experience they ga ined thi s year has aroused hopes th at a premiership may be gained very soon in the future .

The most successful team was C Grade. After remaining undefea ted for most of the season, they were narrowely defeated by Kilm a ire. However, they reached the fin als and despite the fact that the team played brilliantly and as a team, they were defeated a gain by Kilmaire. Congratulation s on a fine season, C Grade.

A Grade began the season well with a twenty-nine goal victory over Windsor. Unfortunately, thi s form could not be retained for a ll the season. Although th e lower teams had little success, the girls gained valuable experience for the future.

We would like to take this opportunity to th ank the coaches not only for their excellent coaching, but also for the interest they showed in each girl. We are also grateful to "Academy", who made them selves available once a week for practice matches.

The inter-house matches were played during second term . Congratulations to Mar ita House, who won quite comfortably from Vinccntia . The enthusiasm of the players and spectators, plus the co-o peration of the girls were greatly appreciated by the Sports Prefects.

After watching the brilliant Matrics playi ng basketball at Sport, Form Il St. Agnes decided they would challenge them to a match . We are sure thi s day was the fir~ t of its kind at C.L.C. Streamers, banners, team songs a nd cheer squads. The Matrics n arrow ly defeated St. Agnes in an entertaining match .

The school spirit and team spirit shown during the 1967 season were outstanding and we can hope quite confidently th at they will be carried on and increased.

SENIOR TENNIS The tennis season opened this year with much zea l and enthusiasm.

Indeed, so much interest was shown a mong the seniors th at it was decided there would be two se nior teams, <. n A team ~nd a B team, as well as a Fo rm Ill team.

This gave more girls the chance of represe nting o ur ochool and this opportunity was appreciated by all the girls in the tennis te ams. After quite a few hours of practice and as ma ny sore muscles, the eight lucky girls chosen for the A team were: Anne Smyth (l ast year's sc hool singles champion), Angela Woodruff, C lare O'Loughlin, M a rga ret C hee! , C herrill Clear, Denise Spurling, J ani s Grierson and Ma rita Ball.

The A te am had a most exciting season, which on the whole was successful. The tea m defeated Loreto Covent quite comfortably, but every ounce of energy and skill was needed by the girls in a clo3e, hard-fou ght victory, by one ga me, over Saint Columba's. Breathing a sigh of relief, the girls th en travelled to Sacre Coeur. But once more keen, talented opposition was met and in four exciting se ts, which had spectators on their toes, a draw was reached .

The next ga me, aga inst Genazzano, was pl ayed at C .L.C. and after their two exciting previous m arc hes, the girls went into thi s m atch full of enthusiasm and determined to win. 1t seemed, however, th at the G enaz-

The most enthusi astic B team h ad a very successful season, not losin g any of their m atches. The eight girls comprising the B te am were: Wendy W a lsh , Elizabe th McGregor, An ge ia Ca picchia no, Jennifer Browne, Deborah Bye, Pa mel a McNeill , Josie Smith a nd Agnes Fejes.

The B's sta rted the season with a thrill-packed draw with Loreto Convent. Both team s were keen a nd determined to win a nd a draw was reall y a good result fo r two fai rly evenly matchd teams. The second game, aga inst Saint Columba's, was pl ayed at C.L.C. a nd th e team had a good victory against some tough opposition. All the girls played we il a nd were jubilant after a well deserved victory.

The B team 's next match was agai nst Sacre Coeu r. The girls, playing confidently a fter their win of the week before, ca me o ut comfort able winners. They were ready a nd eager for their final match aga inst Genazzano at Gena zza no. But, unfortun ate ly, the match had to be cancelled.

So ended a most successful and enj oyable season for all the girls ta king part. We would like to th a nk Sister Mar ie-Louise for arrangin g the matches, a nd for all the valu able ass ista nce she gave us throughout th e seaso n. We are sure, with a ll the sp irit and enthusiasm shown this year, th at next year's season will prove as enjoy able.

JUNIOR TENNIS Not long after the second term bega n, Sister Ma rie-Louise chose the team for Sunday morning tennis competit io n. The members of the team were Michaela Mobili a, Toni Keenan (capt.), Dominique Joyce, Patricia Stan nus and Colette Reeves (emergency). l n the same week we started th·e first round of tenni s.

Only one match was won, unfortun ately, but the team was not lackin g in spirit. No matches were c:>ncelled beca use of Melbourne's erratic weather. Even though it was mid-winter the sun a lways managed to shine through a nd this boosted our morale immensely.

I hope that next year's team will enjoy and apprec iate th e matche3 as much as we did.

INTER-HOUSE TENNIS This relatively new competition in our school, having been instigated only two years ago, is a so urce of much enthusiasm throu ghout the school.

It has the advantage of giving ai most every girl who has any inter.~st at all in tennis the chance to show her prowess with a racquet. This com petition was held in the first term a nd so a lso had th e add ed advantage of helping girls to begin their strenuous pract isin g fo r the inter-sc hool m atches.

The Juniors were especially enthusiastic and must be congratulated on their efforts for their individu ai houses. The competition this year between the four houses, Aikenhe ad, Loyol a, Marita and Vincentia, was close a nd each match became of vital importance, as tensi o n mounted and everybody was full of suspense, to know who would win the cup.

This tension finally reached a grand climax for the last match. At this stage, Loyola and Aikenhead were even, with Vincentia not far behind, a nd Mari ta bringing up the rear. Loyol a won the match by one game a nd with this match, the cup. Co ngratul a tions , Loyola and also their captain, Maree Gilhome, who I think aged quite a few years during that last exciting match . Commiserations to Aikenhead and also to Colette .Mann.

Maybe next year will be Aikenhead's year in the Inter-House Tenrns.

We would like to thank all the girls who organized the tournament and also a ll the girls who by participat ing in it made it a success.

We certainly have some very f ne swimmers at our school but thi s did not eliminate the necesoily for iife-sa vers. Many of the sen ior girls were engaged in this important task , much to the reiief of m any of the "littlies". All the races were obscrvd ..vith interest a lthough it was the relays which rea lly roused excitement. Aikcnhead won the junior and the senior relays, while Yincentia won th~ sub-sernor rel ay. But the n~ a m attractions of the evening were the novel ty events. There were a variety of these, but perh aps the one which wa s most am using was the Matric. "kicking-board" relay . 1t certain ly must have appeared ra ther funny, but the strain on the mu scles was no joke and Loyola ce rta inly ea rned the1r win.

Spirits were high when the l! na l scores were a rran ged a nd it was announced th at Vincentia h ad won the ~chool Swimming C up for 1967.

Vincentia also won the Junior House C up while Loyola went away with the Senior House Cup. Many beaming :faces were seen but perhaps the happiest smiles came from the girls in Vincenti a.

THE SWIMMING NIGHT All who were prese nt at the C. L. C. Swimming Sports will agree with me in saying that it was a most enjoyable evening. Enjoyable not only for the girls pa rticipating, but also for the many parents and friends looking on. Ma ny hours had been devo:ed to preparations and procedures, but these were hours well spent for they culminated in the success of the night. It was wonderful to see captain a nd team energetically working towards the new swimming cup for the winning team.

Although slow to star! , in no time events began t'.l run very smoo thly.

Here we must thank all !hose who so willingly hel ped as officials, starters, etc.; without their help we could never have managed. It is a lso necessa ry here to mention the enthusiasm a nd co-operation of the girls ta king part
