TUESDAY, 2nd FEBRUARY, 1965: Back into uniform s once again -tanned and happy we commence another year. We would like to take this oppo rtunit y to welcome the new members of the staff to C.L.C. WEDNESDAY , 3rd FEBRUARY: Sport and dancing resume agai n today and we a re now subject to aching limbs as a result of the stre nuo us exerc ise.

THURSDAY, 4th FEBRUARY: The ne w shoes worn by so many of us are now considered to be merely a revival of some medieval torture.

Blistered and aching feet are the order of the day.

FRIDAY, 5th FEBRUARY: All looki ng forward to two glorious days of rest.

MONDAY, 8t h FEBRUARY: Mother M. St. Margaret visited a ll classes during the day. During her visit to the Mat ricul ation class she and Miss Schmid provided a livel y conversation in German and a lso French before a very awe -struck class.

MONDAY, 15th FEBRUARY: Assembly in the ha ll. Karen Ward was elected Head Prefect with eight ot her prefects. C lass ca pt ains were a lso elected. The thing th at merited most support was a ha lf-d ay holid ay .

FRIDAY, 19th FEBRUARY: At last a chance to ca tch up o n the bewildering amoun t of work that is piling up. Week-ends n ow represent two days of work rat her th an pleasu re .

MONDAY, 22nd FEBRUARY: This morning we had our first assembly for the year. After assembly the House Ca ptains spoke to the members of their teams, briefing them on the routine , of the coming Sports Day a nd giving them a pep talk .

FRIDAY, 26th FEBRUARY: This afternoon our se nior tennis came a draw in a match with Presentation Convent , Windsor. The match was played at our sc hool courts. The junior tenni s team won their matc h aga inst Presentation Convent , Windsor, at a match at the Convent.

MONDAY , Isl MARC H : Today senior pupils received a lect ure from Father Dando-Sacred Heart Pioneer Temperance Association.

TUESDAY, 2nd MAR C H : There was a m a rked and noticeab le silence in the Matric . room today as a certain member of the class resumed her seat. This was a natural result from Father Dando's previous lecture .

WEDNESDAY , 3rd MAR C H : Miss Downs received a grea t surpri se today in havi ng the senior members of one of her classes in full bloom in the front rows at dancing.

FRIDAY , 5th MARCH: We now look forward to three days of rest if you could call it that. Monday is a holiday in celebra tion of Labour Day. P.S.-The senior and junior tennis teams a re to play Our Lady Of Mercy Convent , Heidelberg, thi s afternoon . We hope all enthusiastic supporters will att end .

MONDAY, 8th MARCH: Most of the school is enjoying a muchneeded vacation, on the banks of the Yarra .

TUESDAY, 9th MAR C H: Congratu lations to our senior and junior tennis teams, who defeated Our Lady Of Mercy Convent . Heidelberg, Friday.

WEDNESDAY, 10th MARCH: Today the Sports heats were held at Richmond football ground a nd apart from several cases of sunstroke a ll went well. This is the first time th e heats have been held outside the 5c hool a nd in sc hool hours-hooray' Unfortunately many of the seniors al most missed the bus a nd had to make a dash which added to their e.x haustion. But a ll was not over. Upon arriv in g back at sc hool we were assembled for marching practice for the Sports for the rest of the afte rnoon .

THURSDAY, I Ith MARCH: We were not surprised to find th at most girls were suffe rin g from aching limbs as the after effects of yesterday's out ing. Once aga in the senior school is tryin g to make its marching prese nt ab le for St. Patrick's Day march .

SATURDAY, 13th MARCH: Despite the ra in, the St. Patr ick·s Day march went off very well, and C.L.C. received many co mpliments.

MONDAY, 15t h MARCH: At Assembly a represent ative of the A.N.Z .

Bank spoke to us on the importance of saving our mo ney. Mother Rectress presented thi s year's Leav ings with their Inter medi ate Ce rtifica te.

TUESDAY, 16th MAR C H: Form I went to see "Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm ", and the luck y creatures enjoyed it very much.

Form llrs hiked to the Town Ha ll thi s a fternoon for a n Orchestral Co ncert only to find it's next week. Ah well , the walk will get some of that weight off.

WEDNESDAY , 17th MARCH : Dea r St. Patrick , pra y for us a nd th ank you for the holid ay. This is the prayer a ll the Matrics. are utterin g as they bitterly regret last week-end's pleas ures and try to wade through the four essays due for Friday. The rest of the sc hool is glad of the holiday too , but they 're enjoying it. Wait till they get to Matric .

THURSDAY, 18th MARCH: Certa in members of the Matric. class were distracted from the Prophecies of Osee by the sight of workmen manipul ating new spouting on the Convent roof. Matrics. had a n inform a l di sc ussion after sc hool with a Redemptori st Father on the subject of Missions and Retreats.

MONDAY, 22nd MAR C H : Unfortunately the senior tennis team lost at Sacre Coe ur.

TUESDAY , 23rd MAR C H: Today we had our first marc hing practice for the Sports, and the impa rti a l (?) adjudicator, S. M . Helen, declared all teams to be of equal stand a rd . Form Ill trudged to the Town H a ll a nd thi s time, to their relief, there was an orchestral concert.

WEDNESDAY, 24th MARC H: Inter-house relay te ams practised today , and although Yincentia won each time, the others were not far behind.

THURSDAY, 25th MARC H : Ma rching practice aga in today.

FRIDAY, 26th MARC H : Tennis team is to play Genezzano thi s a fternoon . Good luck to a ll conce rned . More ma rching p ractice .

SUNDAY, 28th MAR C H : ln spite of the freezing wind the Sports went off ve ry well. Congratulations to Ma rita who won the school cup a gain , Aikenhead who won the marching a nd all individual winners.

MONDAY, 29th MAR C H : Today we didn 't have to be at school until nine o'clock and we are getting out at three. Many weird noises were hea rd from the perception room at first period-Matrics. were practising their psalm singing. Tennis was a draw last Friday.

THURSDAY, 1st APRIL: S.M. Josita who has recently been doing socia l work in India, showed some slides of her visit there. For the first time in the history of C.L.C. our senior tennis team beat Mandeville H a ll.

FRIDAY, 2nd APRIL : Junior tennis team was once agai n successful in defeating Kildara.

SATU RDA Y, 3rd APRIL: St. Columba's Sports Day . Congratulations to under 12 relay team who were very successful , and also to the other _ girls who competed.

TUESDAY, 6th APRIL: Father McGrath ca me thi s afternoon and gave a n enlightening and inspiring speech a bout Y .C .S. Unfortunately, there was some confusion as the chairs came down.

THURSDAY, 8th APPRIL: The heroic efforts of the 4th graders may be watched every lunch hour as they play off in the Inter-house tennis matches now in progress. Good luck to those Matrics. who a re attemptin g to teach them how to pl ay.

FRIDAY, 9th APRIL: 'Another evidence of the Matri cs.' sporting talents-only one entrant for the basketball teams. Many of the Leavings a re looking forw a rd to Parade's first Prac tice Dance tomorrow.

MONDAY, 12th APRIL : Disa ppointment for the two Matric . girls who went to Parade's Practice on Saturday-only Leav ing boys prese nt.

TUESDAY, 13th APRIL: Today several girls from Matric . attended the Requiem Mass for Mrs. Mcintyre, the mother of a past classmate .

WEDNESDAY, 14th APRIL: We brea k up for Easte r tomorrow a nd come back next Wednesd ay, but Matrics. go on Retreat for three days until the Friday. Tennis going well. Ma rita is winning the tournament so far. Leavings seem interested in St. Pat's cadets practising in the ya rd next to our sc hool. Many heads hanging out of the top storey windowsmuch to the boys' delight.

THURSDAY, 15th APRIL: School fini shed at 2 o'clock tod ay-except for those Matrics. who didn't do their history homework . Something to look forward to is St. Pa t's Cricket Dance on Easter Sunday ni ght. H a ppy Easter to a ll.

WEDNESDAY, 21st APRIL: Bac k to sc hool and what terrible weather.

From now on it's solid studyi ng for all--exams next week . Matrics. a re off on Retreat to Ave Maria . St. Pat's Da nce voted a success by a ll who attended.

THURSDAY, 22nd APRIL: Other teams are determined th at Ma rita will not win the tourn ament, but who can tell? The term is fast di sa ppea ring and there are many groans at the work still to be learnt.

FRIDAY, 23rd APRIL: Matrics. come out of Retreat tod ay and a ll agreed th at much was gained from Father's humorous talks. This- week-end we must spare a thought for Anzac. It is the Golden Jubilee . Let us always remember the sacrifices made for us and our country th at we might be free .

MONDAY, 26th APRIL: Exams started for the school (junior) toda y.

TUESDAY, 27th APRIL: Exams for the rest of the school today except Matrics. some of whom could be seen laughing at the wild cramming at lunchtime . Matrics . start tomorrow-he who laughs last laughs longest.

WEDNESDAY, 28th APRIL: No, those fearful noises don't mean we have termites-the buildings next door are being demolished much to the frustration of those sitting for exams.

THURSDAY, 29th APRIL: Very quiet around school these days.

FRIDAY, 30th APRIL: Exams finished today. We all attended a Mass for vocations in the Cathedral today.

MONDAY, 3rd MAY: Empire Youth March yesterday followed by Benediction in the Cathedral. Guard of honour by St. Pat's cadets. Correction day today for Forms I-IV. TUESDAY, 4th MAY: Mothers' Day stall today proved a great success. Parade's Practice Dance, held in the College Hall after school, was enjoyed by many of the Leavings.

THURSDAY, 6th MAY: Looking forward to a well-earned holiday tomorrow granted by Australia's Retiring Governor-General.

FRIDAY, 7th MAY : Holiday today .

MONDAY, 10th MAY: A couple of days after the end of the term results were received , some Matric . students were seen in the Library cutting up bits of crepe paper. . . . Looks as though it is back to Grade I work for them.

TUESDAY, 11th MAY: Sister M. Helen is having a great deal of trouble in choosing the basketball teams this year because there are so many enthusiastic young players. All were very hopeful until we. heard Sister say, "It's not that you 're all so marvellous" . . . well , there 1s only one other explanation, isn't there?

WEDNESDAY 12th MAY: While some of the Matriculation a nd Leaving students att~nded the Parade Dance tonight, other loyal girls from these two classes stayed back to decorate the lunch-hall for the C.L.C. Dance .. . or was it for the "Juniors' Party" ?

THURSDAY, 13th MAY: The Inter-house Tennis Tournament finished today to the relief of the Sports Captains. Thanks go to all the girls who participated in the tournament and made it such a success. Congratulations to Loyola. There is much excitement brewing in the Matriculation and Leaving rooms today as pupils discuss their school dance tonight. Confusion reigned in the Hall as last minute decorations were being put up. Special thanks to those who made the evening so enjoyable.

FRIDAY, 14th MAY: Break-up. Matriculation and Leaving students came to tidy up after their dance the night before. Now who was that prefect who came to help when all the work had been finished . . . .

TUESDAY, I st JUNE: Back to a term of hard work. Wonder if we have been away. The first warning is always work WEDNESDAY, 2nd JUNE: Loyola has won the first term tennis cup -and basketball is up for this term .

FRIDAY, 7th JUNE: Victory for the bas ketball teams.

FRIDAY, 11th JUNE: A team defeated-better luck next time. However the B, C and D teams won. Congratulations' MONDAY, 14th JUNE : Queen's Birthday.

TUESDAY, 15th JUNE: Amazing, a long week-end but still no work is done . How do we spend our week-ends? A certain teacher was pleased we don 't spend too much time socially!

WEDNESDAY, 16th JUNE: Old Collegians· Ball tonight; 20 past pupils make their debut. lt should be a great success.

THURSDAY, 17th JUNE: Excitement for a few "fortunate"' girlsSt. Bede's Ball tonight.

FRIDAY, 18th JUNE : Who were those four bleary-eyed pupils who showed up late today. Despite their tiredness they claimed the Ball a success.

MONDAY, 21st JUNE: Shane Kittel gave a most interesting and technical speech to the class, on "Overseas Investment in Australia" . This is the topic for the Youth Speaks for Australia Competition. The general comment-"Most impressive" .

TUESDAY, 22nd JUNE: The number of literature pupils seems to have increased, judging by the number of essays on time! Wonder if the threat of suspension from the literature class achieved this desired effect.

WEDNESDAY , 30th JUNE: Many nervous actresses hoping they will not forget their lines for tomorrow's performance of "Northanger Abbey" to various schools.

THURSDAY, !st JULY: The second performance of " Northanger Abbey·· took place in our College Hall tonight. The night proved a tremendou s success. Our congratulations go to Miss McAlpin, the entire cast a nd to those who helped behind the scenes.

FRIDAY, 2nd JULY: Another great performance of "North anger Abbey"". Many favourable comments from members of the a udience. Some said it had a "professional"" touch. The girls showed their appreciation to Mi ss McAlpin in the form of a bouquet of flowers , after toni ght' s perform ance .

MONDAY, 5th JULY : Matrics. were praying for Sh ane tod ay. I wonder why?

TUESDAY, 6th JULY: Congratul ation s to Shane Kittel for becoming the second Matric. student at C. L.C. with her Driver's Licence .

WEDNESDAY, 7th JULY : A certain somebody was seen "heading·· down town via St. Patric k's Ca thedral. Wh y did several of the Matrics. ge t the Vincentia flag re ady to wave it to certain people outside the Cat hed ral ?

FRIDAY, 9th JULY : The Matric . literature class attended a performa nce of "" Murder in the Cathedral '" in St. Paul's Cathedral. Apparently a Prefect and a Leaving found the gates locked when they attempted to leave the sc hool for the performa nce . They co uld have boa rded for the night, o nl y the Prefect had the voucher, without which the other girls co uld not see the pla y. Result?

MONDAY, 12th JULY: Matric . debate against Nth. Melbourne . Still a secret who won inter-house basketball.

WEDNESDAY, 14th JULY : Debate aga inst Parade .

THURSDAY, 15th JULY : The girls in the Drama Group performed one act of "Northanger Abbey"' a t the Ca tholic Drama Festiva l. They we re congratulated on a " professional performance" and received the best criticism of the evening. Hopes are high that our performance will reach the fin a l three .

FRIDAY, 16th JULY : Shane Kittel , of the Matric . class, gave a successful speech in the Junior Chamber of Commerce competition on "Overseas Investment"'.

MONDAY, 19th JULY : The Matric . and Leaving literature classes attended a performance of " An Enemy of the People" staged at the Russell Street Theatre. General comment-Very good. Unfortunately we did not reac h the final of the dram a festiv a l. The inter-house basketball matches a re going well and have a roused enthusiasm in both the senior and junior sc hool s. Matric. German class-in case you did not know , the Goethe Competition is not until tomorrow-also, the history test has been postponed for your benefit.

TUESDAY, 20th JULY: The Goethe Competition was on today and girls from Intermediate, Leaving and Matric. went to recite their poetry .

THURSDAY, 22nd JULY: The Ma tric . French class is excited for the second consecutive Thursday. Incidentally, this is the second time Monsieur Mideros has come for conversation . The third formers are budding playwrights and actresses. Each tea m has to write a reli gious play and pertorm it before the class. Wh y are certain- teachers afra id of spiders? The 5th and 6th graders a re doing a n operetta-"Snow White"'. Question in Matric . religiou s class-" Did you know th at the father of the ' Little Flower" wa s chased by a bull?" " No, Shane, we didn"t. Thank s for the inform ation ." The Religion Library is suddenly popula r, but why are people looking for the thinnest books? Some girls went to see the fin a l of the Drama Festival.

Those who saw it still claim that C .L.C . should have been in it and won.

Disturbed thi s afternoon by a smell of burning from the staff room. Which te acher decided to boil the tea-cosy?

FRIDAY , 23rd JULY : The Matrics. gra tefull y acknowledge Michelle's Auntie Ma isie for her delicious " hedge-hog'". Who lost her ticket to St. Columba's Dance? Rea ll y, how did Bri gette's wool get into such a tangle a nd how long did it take to unta ngle it? Prepara tions for Y.C.S. Week. beginning on Monday .

MONDAY, 26th JULY: Y.C.S. Mass in the hall toda y, celebrated by Fr. Deakin . Many girls took the Y.C.S. pledge and received their badges today.

TUESDAY, 27th JULY: Intermedi ate ten se today. Tomorrow they sit for the Commonwea lth Scholarships. Everyone will be praying for them .

WEDNESDAY, 28th JULY: Many heated discussions today. Is T .V . the enemy of culture? Who was the Matric . who leaped blindly into a lengthy debate with Fr. Dea kin?

THURSDAY, 29th JULY: The Intermediates emerged from their room tod ay. The examina tion s a re over but the results are still to come. Good luck , all!

FRIDAY, 30th JULY : First class enterta inment was provided by the Y.C .S. thi s afternoon . Their concert ma rked the end of a very successful Y.C.S. Week. Many th anks to all concerned.

MONDAY, 2nd AUGUST: The Leavi ngs a nd Matrics. held a debate at assembly this morning. The Lea vings: Judith Johnson, Glen ise Coleman and Carmel Shaw, gave informative speeches on the horror of the " idiot box" but the Matrics., Mary Watson, Shane Kittel and Pat. Murphy, finally proved th at T.V. is not the enemy of culture. Thanks to Pat. Hindle for the excellent chairmanship at short notice and the adjudicator, Sister Claver.

TUESDAY, 3rd AUGUST: Some of the Matrics. a ttended an informative lecture on Clear Thinking given by Mr. Power at Melbourne University .

What caused most of the front row to lose its powers of concentration?

WEDNESDAY, 4th AUGUST: Why are so m any Form IIrs suddenly heading for the Confessional? Did the fact that Sister Helen showed them pictures from Michelangelo's " Last Judgment" have a nything to do with it?

THURSDAY, 5th AUGUST: Rain, rain and more rain. What a reprieve for the stiff and ancient Matrics. scheduled for the inter-house basketball matches!

FRJDA Y 6th AUGUST: First Friday Mass cancelled today because of the heavy rain. Many penitent sinners en route to the Cathedral were disturbed to find the paths strewn with hundreds of squashy little worms.

Ugh! Exams on 23rd-Leavings and Matrics. work harder? Also preparations for Second Term Dance .

MONDAY, 9th AUGUST: Forms ll and HI began their exams today and many girls can be seen squatting over books in the lunch hour. The 4th and 5th formers filled in their forms for the end of year exams.

TUESDAY, 17th AUGUST: Another most successful education day was held with many favourable comments. Poor Sister Marie Louise had quite a task in keeping up with the girls in her descriptions of their outfits.

WEDNESDAY and THURSDAY, 18th and 19th AUGUST: All are quiet for the music exams which are in progress.

MONDAY, 23rd AUGUST: Forms IV, V and Vl started their term exams today and the school has once more become noticeably quiet during the breaks.

TUESDAY, 24th AUGUST: With the closeness of Father's Day the stall held in the Hall was the centre of attention today. It was quite a success.

FRJDA Y, 27th AUGUST: Last day for term, exams over, thank goodness! Decorations being put up for tonight's festivities. Just learnt we will be on Parliament of Youth on 3rd October, "Is U .S. giving the Free World Good Leadership''-negative side. R. Walsh, S. Kittel and K. Ward, speakers. C.L.C.'s third consecutive year on the programme.

MONDAY, 13th SEPTEMBER: Back to the final term. The year has tlown but all are most anxious to recount their adventures and start making attempts at an even harder term of work.

TUESDAY and WEDNESDAY, 14th and 15th SEPTEMBER: It has been most peaceful these last two days with the Leavings on retreat at "Ave Maria" Retreat House.

THURSDAY, 16th SEPTEMBER: Today Matrics. filled in all the forms for everything from University Courses to Teaching.

MONDAY, 20th SEPTEMBER: Great deal of practice is going on for the coming Forms I, ll and III Operetta.

WEDNESDAY, 22nd SEPTEMBER: Today Mr. Redding, from the Herald , came to give the girls on "Parliament of Youth" a briefing concerning procedure, etc.

THURSDAY, 23rd SEPTEMBER: Forms 1, II and III put on their first performance of the "Royal Jester" tonight. They showed an amount of talent.

FRJDA Y, 24th SEPTEMBER: More audience participation for tonight's performance of the "Royal Jester". We all know where the stars of the future lie, or do we?

TUESDAY, 28th SEPTEMBER: The Mothers' Auxiliary today had a successful "At Home'' in the College Hall.

WEDNESDAY, 29th SEPTEMBER: While the ex-students were engaged with their Hat Parade down in the Hall, the Leavings and Matrics . were busily engaged in a debate with St. Joseph 's, North Melbourne, as preparation for their T.V. performance.

THURSDAY, 30th SEPTEMBE'R and FRIDAY, 1st OCTOBER: Forty Hours' Adoration in St. Patrick's Cathedral-girls attending High Mass on the Friday.

MONDAY, 4th OCTOBER and TUESDAY, 5th OCTOBER : Quiet around the Inters.' rooms as they are on retreat.

THURSDAY, 7th OCTOBER: Grade 5 and Form lII received form s to see the doctor, who will be coming next week-all are looking forward to it??

MONDAY, I Ith OCTOBER: Assembly this morning-letters from New Guinea Missions thanking Y.C.S. girls and all others who helped in sending crayons to Missions. So far good work on drive to get money for Science Block. Progress scores going up this week-so keep up good work! Final exams in about five weeks. Form Ill's presented with Mother Craft certificates.

TUESDAY, 12th OCTOBER : Notice for the tennis championships went up this afternoon. Was that the reason for about four girls playing tennis on the two courts after school-a bit crowded, but every little helps.

WEDNESDAY, 13th OCTOBER: Matrics. had another hectic sports lesson again today. We played softball and this time we even had a softball bat!

FRIDAY, 15th OCTOBER: Leavings had a debate with Parade after school tonight on the topic of the witches in " Macbeth" . Despite the excellent work of the chairwoman, it nearly turned into a riot at a few instances.

MONDAY, 18th OCTOBER: Two Form III girls playing tennis today -without a ball! Now and again the ball can be a bit of a nuisance in tennis, can't it!

TUESDAY, 19th OCTOBER: Form Ill's played tennis against Mandeville this afternoon; they had a great victory.

WEDNESDAY, 20th OCTOBER: Fr. Deakin gave quite a comical lesson to Matrics. today. Pat. Murphy won the chocolates. They were raffled at lunchtime and they were finished at lunchtime. All Matrics. on a diet tomorrow.

THURSDAY, 2 lst OCTOBER: Two Matrics. playing tennis in an extremely energetic fashion today in a bid to lose weight! Mr. Redding and Mr. O'Connell came to school today to present the "budding" debaters with their plaques for their appearance on "Parliament of Youth".

WEDNESDAY, 3rd NOVEMBER : Everyone returned today after a four-day break. Aren't we lucky that the Cup and a Holy Day happened to fall on two consecutive days. It also gave an opportunity for some revision . Mother Rectress' fea st day a lso, and school got out at 2.30.

FRIDAY, 5th NOVEMBER : The whole school is still making attempts to reach the quota allotted to each class for the Science Block. Keep up the good work, girls!

WEDNESDAY, 10th NOVEMBER: Matrics. went on a picnic to C hel sea and the Leavings went to the Eastern Beach , Geelong. The outings provided a break from the great amount of studying going on and also revived our spirits-especially the 60 m.p.h. gale which hit the bay beaches about 2 p.m.!!

THURSDAY, 11th NOVEMBER : Final touches being put to Drama and singing items for Speech Night by both Sister Theresia and Miss McAlpin.

TUESDAY, 16th NOVEMBER: Last day today. Will end the sc hool careers of many senior girls. Speech Night tonight and our congratulations to prize winners. Best of luck in the future for those leaving sc hool.

PIONEER TOT AL ABSTINENCE ASSOCIATION OF THE SACRED HEART This year the P.T.A .A. has been reactivated. On the Feast of the Sacred Heart , Father Pietzsch , S.J ., conducted a short ce remony in the C ha pel , speaking to prospective members . and blessing and distributing badges . This was a very appropriate day for the members to undert a ke to abstai n from drink until they a re twenty-five.

There is more to the P .T .A.A. than just taking a pledge. The members form part of a crusade of prayer and self-denial in reparation to the Sacred Heart for the sins of intemperance and to obtain strengthening grace for sinners. Y.C.S. 1965 This yea r has seen some further developments in C .L.C.'s Y .C.S. During first term we reintroduced the movement into Form Ill. Now there are aga in three sections-Senior, Intermediate and Junior. The Form lll's have been keen under the guidance of senior leaders.

Y.C.S. has been one of C.L.C.'s prominent features this year, thank s to the efforts of the senior leaders who spent a great deal of time adverti sing the organization's work in the sc hool. Dozens of posters were made to let everyone know of the coming activities. Activity played a n important pa rt in the Y.C.S. this year, especially in regard to efforts to help the mi ssions. Rosa Boffa and Catherine Meadley were very useful with their ideas and enthusiasm in this field. However, the most important thing is that the Y.C.S. has penetrated the whole school, and that nonmembers have vigorously supported its campaigns.

There was a further development this year, in that, under the capable leadership of Helen Brophy and Anne Philips, the " Y.C.S. Bulletin" was

revived , and published each term . Thanks go to all who contributed a rticles, but who was the wit responsible for the jokes?

Father Deakin, S.M. Theresa Joseph and S.M . Claver were again the religious ass istants. Father led some lively di scussion at the leaders· meetings. With his many controversial remarks, much of the time was spent trying to persuade him to our point of view.

We a re wondering if our noble Treasurer, Helen Blac k, is still collecting money for Headquarters. She is la ughingly assisted(?) by the Secreta ry.

And as our life at present is that of a student I am sure that as a result of the retreat there was a general class resolution to work hard this term and to offer up our class prayers for the success of its members.

-France~ Vowles, Form V. On 4th , 5th October, the girls of Form IV attended a very helpful retreat, Father Harman giving interesting talks for the present and future.

The typed sheets summarizing each talk assisted the girls during their free minutes. An unusual aspect of this retreat was the offering of Mass with the altar facing the girls. This helped everyone to have a deeper understanding of the Mass. During this retreat the stress was placed on our part as Christians in the world in years to come.

-Irene McDonald , Form IV. On 8th October we began our retreat, a little apprehensive perhaps, because for many of us this was our first retreat. But when we met Father McGrath all our fears were dispelled, for during his three talks he showed kindness and understanding which helped us all the more to communicate with God. Between the talks we were given an opportunity to talk to Father.

We recited the Mass in English , after which we had time for deep thinking.

J am sure all the girls benefited immensely from this retreat, and although the effect has lessened now , the spirit of communion with God on that day will remain with us.

RETREATS The Matrics. returned from the hectic scramble of the short Easter holidays to go on their annual retreat at Ave Maria, Essendon. We hardly knew what to expect, but the atmosphere was friendly and homelike. We had daily Mass, Benediction and lectures, followed in the evening by discussions and films , all of which were thought-provoking and interesting.

The girls agreed that the retreat was of immense spiritual benefit, and we all returned to school full of promising resolutions, but did the rest of the school notice any difference?

-Mary Watson , Form Vl. The last term of 1965 commenced in ' a slightly different way for the Leavings. Tuesday and Wednesday were spent at Ave Maria Retreat House.

The lower forms who have not yet made a retreat out of school precincts may not realise the value of going away for the retreat. It makes an enormous difference, as you go to a place which is entirely given over to meditation and prayer. There is something unique about the atmosphere of a Retreat House, but not completely alienated from our own life, and one remark was made which seemed to voice the general opinion, "So long, girls, looks like I'm going to enter the eonvent, anyway" . Such a retreat is not meant to make everyone suddenly decide she will become a nun. It gives page twelv e

MARGARET BURKE: Although Margaret shines in the History class, she is on most other occasions a very quiet girl.

MOIRA BYRNE: The smiling and efficient captain of Vincentia, and the controller of the Matrics.' drive for funds for the science block. Moira , for some reason , likes Coles, and has recently developed an interest in water ski-ing.

GIOVANNA DEL GRECO: Likes music and enjoys her bus trips. She "never fails" to amuse the French class.

PATRICIA HINDLE: A quiet and philosophical member of the class, Pat has gained wide popularity throughout the year.

SHANE KITTEL: Is a very voluble member of the class and believes that one is entitled to one's opinion. It was not surprising that she Jed her team to victory on Sports Day in view of her own athletic prowess!!

MICHELLE LANE: Petite Michelle is renowned for her hedgehogs, her knitting and her daisies. Michelle is a great debater and believes that one is entitled to one's opinion.

ANN MANGER : Is the "arty" member of the class, and her tendency to dream has been noticed by several people.

JENNIFER MURGO: The smallest in the class, but manages to make the biggest noise in objecting to the atmosphere around her desk .

PATRICIA MURPHY: With those big, blue eyes, seemingly so innocent -but oh! that wit. No wonder she is dux with Roselyn.

ANNE O'LOUGHUN: The first member of the class to gain her driving licence, she now spends her week-ends exploring Victoria. Anne's wonderful school spirit has been an inspiration to the class.

MARCIA OPPERMAN: Is a quiet girl, seen but not heard, as young ladies used to be. She was our mace bearer in " Parliament of Youth" .

BRIGITTE RUGOWSKA: Our distinguished linguist, with other talents, too, like the art she has inherited from her grandmother. Brigitte amuses the class at lunch time with her woolly tangles.

ELIZABETH SZWEDE: Elizabeth has another year of school ahead of her, and where? In Switzerland. She'll be ready for another Geography prize when she leaves that country.

ROSELYN WALSH: The tallest member of our class. Despite her preference for Law, we suspect that her capacities lie in the field of journalism.

JULIE WALTERS: The best dramatist in the class. Despite her change in location, Julie still finds plenty to amuse her on the way to school.

KAREN WARD: Karen's main interests are tennis and music. She is one of our best debaters and has been an able Head Prefect.

MARY WATSON : One of our smaller members, but not when it comes to the good old "brainpower". What is behind Mary's liking for French? Most of her time seems to be spent engrossed in this subjecf or her other favourite.

NEWS OF INDIA During the last Christmas vacation, Sister M. Josita of St. Vincent's Hospital who is doing a course in Social Science at Melbourne University, went with another student-Sister, Sister Madeleine Sophie, also of St. Vincent's, on a trip to lndia. The purpose of this trip was to obtain some first-hand information on the way of life of the Indian people. The Sisters learned a great deal about the living standards of these people, the conditions under which they are forced to live and the hardships they must endure in order to maintain this existence. This trip was a truly eye-opening experience for these Sisters.

On her return, Sister M. Josita came at the invitation of Mother Rectress to show us some coloured slides taken during her stay in lndia.

These slides made a great impact on us who, living in Australia, know nothing of poverty and hardship . We all began to realize just how much we in Australia live in our own little world, far removed from the suffering and the continuous battle for survival that these people are fighting, unconscious of the fact that they even exist. Oh yes, we have all read of the dire poverty of India, the tremendous population, the hundreds of thousands dying of starvation daily and the high infant mortality rate, but to us these were just a lot of facts compiled in books or in newspapers. They had nothing to do with us. They seemed too unrealistic and so dramatised in view of our own high living standards. But we were in for the shock of our lives.

Sister gave us a running commentary on the slides which , even in themselves, painted for us a vivid picture of how the Indian people live.

Their dwelling places-one could hardly describe them as homes-are very crude and rough , standing about four feet high and covering an area of about six feet square. They are made of earth, the roofs being a mixture of mud, straw and cow dung, which has been left out in the sun to dry.

These "homes" often house a la rge family which lives, sleeping and eating, in one room. lt is not possible to stand upright in it, and as well as being terribly crowded, it is a lso frightfully unhygienic. But then, hygiene is not a common thing among these people. All the garbage is swept out into the streets to rot and decay, forming a breeding place for a ll nature of disease . The people are lucky if they receive one small meal a day, and without sufficient nourishment they cannot hope to ward off disease.

Bathing is an unheard-of luxury among the poor of lndia. There is ba rely enough water to drink, let a lone to wash in . The nuns in the missions often give the women needlework to do beca use they are wonderful at doing embroidery, but a ll the work must be laundered before it can be sold as the women do not wash , and therefore they soil the material.

A pathetic thing in one of the slides was the sight of a community of filthy huts with a huge block of flats in the background. The flats had been built to house the poor, but the rent was too high for them to pay and so the flats remained vacant.

The infant mortality rate is extremely high in India. A great many of the babies born will not even reacff their first birthday. They are doomed even before they are born because their mothers' diets are not good enough

to nourish the unborn children properly. Lack of hygiene is also a contributing factor. ln one of the slides, Sister M. Josita was holding a thre..~­ month-old baby in her arms. She said that its little bones were as soft a~ egg shells, and that she was frightened to hold it too tightly just in case she crushed it. lt looked so tiny and fragile, but like so many Indian babies it was not expected to live much longer.

Everyone was immensely interested in the slides which inspired the Y.C.S. to start a drive for canned milk, food and clothing to be sent to India. The drive was a wonderful success and it gave us all a feeling of satisfaction that we had at least attempted to do something to relieve the suffering of the lndian people.

FORM V BIOLOGY-GEOGRAPHY EXCURSION A fitting way to end the second term holidays was the BiologyGeography excursion to Shoreham on 13th September. About forty girls. armed with enough food to last through a seige, arrived at school on Monday morning. The bus arrived and after a mad scramble for seats everybody settled down. Our driver was called Fred and to the soft billing of music from 3AK we sailed through the city and arrived at Frankston.

We were let out for a quarter of an hour with the threat that if we were not back on time we would be left behind. The next stop was Hastings. where we were to observe the wonders of a salt marsh, much to the discomfort of the girls who had not worn heavy shoes. With Sister Columbiere leading the way, we fought through brambles and blackberries while the mud slowly but surely oozed into our shoes. After deciding that everything they had been told was true, the passengers returned and we continued on our way to Shoreham, a rriving there about 12 noon . The Sisters went up to the farmhouse and as the beach was in the opposite direction, we headed down the road , much to the amazement of a group of workmen . Rolls spiced with sand , and drinks tasting of salt-water can be quite delicious if one does not ha ve them all the time.

Lunch finished and after our first feel of sea water for the summer we sprinted up the hillsides and headed for the farm . Although it was an excursion the only work we did was in the shearing shed when we took a few notes. We observed the sheep a nd their ha bits, tramped through the grass and then finally we started on our way to the bus which was parked in the paddock beside the little church. I even think Fred was glad to see us . We were to stop at Cranbourne on the way home to look at a forest heath and without much ado, except what is connected with travelling 15-20 odd miles, we set off and finally pulled up at a subdivided heath, where we stayed about four minutes, discovering that there had been a better specimen down the road anyhow.

About 4.30 p.m. the school was able to rejoice at our return and saying good-bye to Fred, we slowly tramped up the drive, tired but happy and all ready for the retreat the next day.

"NORTHA1'GER ABBEY" During the first two term s of thi s year about twent y girls from Intermediate, Leaving and Matric. were busy practising Jane Austen's "Northanger Abbey". This was the first three-act play that the students of C.L.C. had allempted, and it proved a great challenge lo no! only the girls in the pla y but also the girls concerned with costu mes. props and make-up.

Glenise Coleman, who pl ayed Isabe lla Thorpe, was the best ac tress.

Her performance was so outstanding that she was congratulated by the English teacher of C.B .C. St. Kild a and th e adjudic ator of the Drama Festival. Anne Hanrahan did a good job in conveying the character of the Rev . Henry Tilney. Her character was a direct contrast lo Carmel Shaw's. whose petite figure helped her to convey the idea of a sweet country girl. Her brother, Deanne Sleith, the shy and very rese rved type. stullered his way through many excellent performances. Anne and Ca rmel a re constantly being asked by the younger fry of C .L.C. if they intend to ge t married, while Deanne is often asked to stutter.

ACT II

Helen Black, who looks very a ri stocra tic norm a lly, was the perfect choice for Eleanor Tilney, Henry's sister. Other notable performers were the General (Lynette Pritchard), Miss Thorpe (Denise Murphy), Mrs. Morl and (Moira Byrne) and Mrs. Allen (Julie Walters) . The whole cast's congratulations go to Elizabeth Co nnell who took over the importa nt part of John Thorpe only a couple of days before the perform ance.

Congratulations and thanks a lso to Miss McAlpin for her m arve llous production which received special commendation at the Catholic Dram a Festival where one scene was presented.

OPERETTA-FORMS I, II, Ill The curtains opened on the nights of 23rd and 24th September to reveal the Cou rt of Print ania in a ll its splendour.

The most outstanding fe ature of this year's operetta, 'The Roy a l Jester", was the individual charm and personality of each ch a rac ter.

The Je ster, Susan Coleman, aided by her lively minstrel , Geraldine Pridham , kept the audience laughin g with her clever antics a nd witty remarks. Susan's mimickin g of the Commar.der of the Army , Angela Woodruff, and the Admira l, Ann Smyth , helped accent the plight of the national defences. Not the least of Susan's victims was the C hancellor of the Exchequer, Mary-Anne McC udden , who received many a blow from the Jester as she despairingly related Printani a's financial situation.

Yet , while the Jester fooled, much to the anguish of the feeble Lord C hamberlain , the blushing court ladies were protected from the executioner by the flirt ati o us Prime Minister. Margaret Gilbert, and hi s arrogant com-

panion, the Lord Chancellor, Pa uline Sefton .

The executioner, Jane Magnik , who, with great skill , men ac ingly wielded her axe, was greatly appreciated by the audience.

As the scene changed , the forest folk were seen , tripping gaily to the strains of fairy music, and two new characters were introduced-Puck (Anne Westmore) a nd the fair princess (Janis Nea l) .

But, even as these folk danced , the court was in a state of great a nxiet y. A black crow had been seen and the astrologer (Maree Floate) added to the gloom with her strange and mysterious song.

Finally, with the help of Puck"s la ughter, the Jester was restored lo his rightful throne. The Kin g a nd his Queen Sylvania took their bow.

Friendship and increased understa nding a mong their fellow men have been the aims of the A.F.S. since 1915, when it was founded as a voluntary ambulance service with the French armies during World War I. After serving again in World War II with the allied a rmies and therefore with men of many nationalities and beliefs, the idea of a peacetime programme to further the basic friendship which exists among all men was revived. In 1947, A.F.S. began its new programme on the teenage level , where it was felt th at this objective was most likely to be accomplished. The American Field Service is a private organization a nd it has no religious or political affiliations of a ny kind.

PARLIAMENT OF YOUTH ln October, at HSV7, we debated against Preston Girls' High School in " Parliament of Youth". C.L.C. took the negative side of the topical question "ls the U .S. giving the free world good leadership?" The three speakers, Roselyn Walsh, Shane Kittel and Karen Ward, presented their arguments very convincingly and were ably seconded by the backbenchers from both Leaving and Matriculation. The speakers were greatly helped by Sister Mary Helen who arranged debates on the subject with the Leavings and also with C.B.C. Parade and C .B.C., North Melbourne. The former debate was adjudicated by Brother Nelson and the latter by Mr. KeonCohen, both of whom gave many helpful hints to the teams. Although the question of American leadership was not resolved many helpful hints were proferred to a ll world leaders.

THE AMERICAN FIELD SERVICE In October, the girls from Forms Ill-VI had the pleasure of listening to an extremely interesting talk by Miss Ca rol Simpson, a nineteen year old Melbourne girl, now studying first year Law at Monash University .

Miss Simpson, who is herself an ex-American Field Scholarship student, introduced us to a completely new avenue of study by describing how the American Field Scholarship can pr ovide an open door leading to understanding and friendship among the peoples of the world.

Through this organization students pass from every part of the world to attend secondary schools throughout the United States for a year of study a nd first-hand experience, while American teenagers study and live with families in other countries- a two-way excha nge of seeing and showing. In this way, young citizens of the world learn to recognise and to respect the similarities and differences of those who, though they live in different countries, have dreams and efforts similarly directed towa rds the goal of a peaceful and useful life. Currently, A.F.S. is placing more th a n two thousand five hundred students from fifty-six countries in homes and schools throughout America, and sending over one thousand America n students to forty-one foreign countries. Since 1947, a total of more th an twenty-three thousa nd students have participated in this scheme.

The girls di splayed keen interest in the deta ils of the scholarship, and Miss Simpson continued to elaborate on the activities and requirements of this great interchange of students.

The award is made for one year of study a nd experience at a public high school in the United States. During the year each student lives as a member of a carefully selected foster-family, who accept him as one of their own children . In addition to pursuing school studies, the student is called upon to take part in the life of the family and the life of the community to which the family belongs. From this participation come some of the deepest rewards which the student gains from this year.

Afer the students have returned home, they remain members of the American Field Service, which keeps in touch with them by letters and a periodic magazine. The returnees, to the limit of their available time, spread word of their experience in articles and speeches, putting into practice, wherever they can, what they have lea rned from their time abroad. They actively co-operate with the Australian-American Association in working to widen further the scope of the A.F.S. programme.

Miss Simpson was as ked many questions, a nd the girls were most appreciative of the interesting facts she ga ve. Each one felt that she had had an opportunity of listening to an absorbing account of wh at could perhaps happen to herself.

SENIOR TENNIS Once again, with the commencement of school for the first term , the tennis courts were crowded with enthusiastic players. The girls for the inter-school tennis teams were to be chosen. At first there were many stra ined and aching muscles, but soon the girls bega n to " limber up". The eight girls chosen for the senior team were: Susan Dooley, Anne H anra han, Karen Wa rd , Patri cia Murphy, Denise Murphy, Denise Spurling, Helen Ca rter and Anne O'Loughlin .

On the whole, we had a fairly succe ssful season. Matches were played aga inst Windsor, Heidelberg, Sacre C oeur, Gen azzano, M andeville Hall a nd Sta r of the Sea. Our thank s go to Sister M. Theresa Joseph who arrange d the matches for us. We hope th at next yea r's matches will prove to be iust as enjoya ble and successful.

INTER-HOUSE TENNIS TOURNAMENT F o r the fir st time in th e hi story of C .L.C. we h ad a tenni s tourn ament between the four houses. Teams were grouped into three sctions- Senior, Sub-senior and Junior.

It proved to be very successful indeed for it brought in fro m each class most of the girls who were interested in tennis. The Juniors, especi a lly , were extremely enthusiastic and helpful. In a few years, if the Juniors keep up their ma rvellou s play, they will have arrived at the stand a rd of M a rga ret Smith.

Loyola just defeated Marita to win the tournament, with Vincentia and Aikenhead close behind. C ongratulations, Loyola! Thanks go to a ll the girls who participated in this tournament and m ade it an outstanding success.

BASKETBALL This year bas ketball occupied most of the second term , as we had inter-house bas ketball competition as well as th e inter-sc hool team s.

Inter-house matches were a tt ac ked with great enthusiasm , especially by the younger classes, who unceas in gly asked, "When do we play?'' With represent at ives from every class (. .. even Mat ric .!), the competition was a certainty to be successful. Thanks must go to all the gi rls who took part in these matches-thei r co-operation and enthusiasm was very gra tifying lo the Sports Prefects.

Under the capable direction of "Coach .. Sister M. Helen , the interschool bas ketball te ams met their opponents with much vigour, if not a lways with success. Most of the te ams were new ly formed thi s yea r, a nd. with the year's experience C. L.C. should "shine .. in the basketba ll competition of 1966. Although none of the teams re ached fin a ls, they a ll had a very enjoyable season , and a re anxiously lookin g forward to the m atches next yea r.

SPORTS DAY The annual school sports for 1965 were slightly different , being held at the Fitzroy Cricket Ground on 28th .March . It was rather an overcsst day but this did not dampen the spirit of the girls who were all eager to prove their team the best.

Aikenhead commenced the day well by once again winning the marching which was judged by Colonel Coleman. Competition was intense as Vincentia, Loyola and Aikenhead tried to wrest the victory from Marita which has won the Sports every year for the last fifteen years or so except in 1963 when Vincentia broke through Marita's run of victory. But although the finish was very close, Marita was victorious aga in .

The inter-school events once more aroused great excitement. Congratulations to St. Columba's who won so many of the relays. One of the most humorous events of the day was the Matriculation Rel ay. There is still some speculation as to whether the 1965 relay team has yet reac hed the finishing line.

Congratulations to all teams for their preparations and team work, and our thanks to S.M. Helen and the many fathers who helped to run off the events so smoothly and efficiently .

MOTHERS' AUXILIARY The Mothers' Auxiliary, which has eighty active members, has once agai n had a happy and successful year under the guiding hand of its very ca pabie President , Mrs. W. Sneazwell.

Just to mention a few of the most popular and successful functions.

There was a Garde n Party and Beachwear Parade at the home of Mrs. Pea rson. A Luncheon a nd Fashion Parade at the Southern Cross Hotel which ended with a Ha ir Styling demonstration by Mr. Francois Kramer.

A House Party given by Mrs. Patterson and Mrs. Ferguson. A Luncheon at Mrs. Feynolds' home. The Dinner Dance at the Princeton . The Annual Retreat at "Ave Mari a", Esse naon. And severa l theatre ni ghts.

To complete the yea r's ac tivities, there will be a Ch ri stm as Stall for the girl s and a Luncheon at the Colle ge for the Mothers and their friends.

Ju st one sad note . Mrs. C . Mcintyre, who was a n Old Collegia n as well as a member of the Mothers' Auxiliary, died early in the year. Ca th , as she was affectionately known, was a Vice-President of the Auxiliary for some time and is missed by her m any friends.

In February the Annual Reunion of the Old Collegians' Association was held . The afternoon was most successful a nd it was very pleasin g lo see so many of the immediate P ast Pupils as well as th ose of previous years and their families. Benediction was given in the Convent C hapel by Father Deakin and was followed by a fternoon tea and election of office-bea rers.

Neither Mrs. Anne Kennell y, our President , nor Miss Margaret McCarthy, our Secretary, stood for re-election. Everyone joined in thanking them both for their work over the past years. Mrs. Antonine Wise was welcomed as our new Preside nt , Mrs . C. Rose, Mrs . B. Reid y and Miss G. Dunnell as Vice-Presidents, Miss Sandra Hogarth , Secretary, and Miss Gail Rogers as Treasurer. Many ex-students were willing to work on the committee and it was hoped th at this was a good omen for the coming events in 1965.

Several function s were held during the year-a Hat Parade a nd a theatre ni ght to "Mary Poppins'', the annual Ball at the Roya le Ballroom in June. Twenty debutantes were presented to the Lady Mayo ress and a ll who attended had a most enjoyable evening. The Commemoration Mass was offered in November. It is wonderful to see on this day some of C.L.C.'s earliest pupils, who never mi ss thi s Mass each year.

To those who a re leavi ng school this yea r we extend a very warm invitation to join the Association and to participate in the activities of the coming year.
