MONDAY . 1st MAY : Many flowers are flowing in for the May altar.

It is obvious that we have some enthusiastic gardeners. Today we are to partake in the Consecration of Our Lady before we commence exams.

With the beginning of exams., knitted brows and puzzled mutterings are the order of the day.

MONDAY, 8th MAY : Exams. now finished. We are anxiously awaiting results. Many preparations for the Prefects' Dance on Wednesda y night. Streamers in the colours of the various schools are industriously being plaited. Fashions and hair styles are the main conversation piece.

WEDNESDAY, 10th MAY: Final arrangements for dance. An excellent band. a very good supper (many th anks to the mothers), and the dance a great success.

MONDAY . 31st JULY: A sad day, as the death of Erna Denk was announced. Forms I and 11 attend prayers in the Cathedral.

WEDNESDAY, 2nd AUGUST: Matric. girls go to see "Twelfth Night" with Vivien Leigh. Girls enjoy it very much .

WEDNESDAY. 9th AUGUST: "A" and "B" basketball teams pla y Our Ladv of Sion. Both held after school. Both teams successful.

MONDAY , 14th, and TUESDAY, 15th AUGUST: Music exams.

Holiday for Feast of the Assumption for the rest of the girls.

FRIDAY, 18th AUGUST: Very good effort by Raza Zizis winning the Matriculation section of the Paraclete Art Show; also to the other girls who won prizes.

SATURDAY, 19th AUGUST: Fate was against our "B's" again thi s year, as again they were beaten by Genezzano in the final. Better luck next year.

MONDAY, 21st AUGUST: Correction Day for Junior Schoo1 Matrics and Leavings expected one, but alas it was not to be.

MONDAY, 18th SEPTEMBER: Fil-st heats of the Y.C.S. Talent Quest. The attraction of amateur variety acts stimulated a stampede for the " front sta lls."

WEDNESDAY, 20th SEPTEMBER: Leaving Perception exam. At last Miss Downs has realised the potential in the senior dancing classes and is preparing girls for items for the Speech Night.

FRIDAY. 22nd SEPTEMBER: Intelligence Tests held today. These showed the girls just how smart they would have been not to take them!

C.L.C. MOTHERS' AUXILIARY The year 1961 is drawing to a close, and the Mothers' Auxiliary has achieved something, which earlier seemed almost a dream . The amount raised towards the Building Fund will be near £ 1,000 at the final count.

During October thirty-four members of the Auxiliary attended the Annual Retreat at Ave Maria, and all enjoyed this day of prayer. Some of our Executive retired at the November Meeting, and we would like to take this opportunity of passing a sincere vote of thanks to Mesdames Brown (Secretary). Snedden (Vice-President), and Green (Assistant Treasurer) for the earnest support during the past year. Their places will be taken respectively by Mesdames Maloney, Buckley and Mann, and also Mrs. Shaw, whom we welcome as Assistant Secretary.

Before this year closes it was unanimously decided to hold a Luncheon at the school instead of our usual Break-up Party, and this should be a fitting conclusion to our enjoyable and successful year.

Thanks to everyone who helped in any small way , and the ladies in the tuck shop for their wonderful support. We look forward to meeting you all on the second Thursday of each month during 1962 .

In th e Second Term the two Fashion a nd Etiqu elte Groups held a fash ion parade in the sc hoo l ha ll. The Drama Gro up wrote a nd perfor med a play for th e sub-juniors in the Second Te rm a lso. C.Y.A. Our fourth year proved to be the most suc cessful fo r the C. Y .A .

Origina lly adap ted from an American organisation, the C.Y.A. was begun in M elbourne under the directorship of Father Creely . His work was carried o n by Father Magi ll, our present director, and this year we have met a third director, Father Philipp~ , who is assis'.a nt to Father Magill. He has already co ndu cted three meetings and has b ~ e n most enthusiastic a nd eager to further the good work of the C.Y.A. In only four years th e C.Y.A. ha s shown itself to be one of the stron gest stud ent bodies. It is large ly different from the other bodies in our colleges, for its ac tiviti es are not dire.cted within the school. Thus it requires a strong loy alty from its members, for the initiative is left entirely to th emse lves to attend its mee tin gs. It a lso requires a small sacrifice. for it asks us to give an hour of our fre e time once a month . We should not begrudge thi s hour, however. for we are merely returning one of the many hours given to us by our Di vine C reator. We should also be grateful for the opportunity offered to us by the C. Y.A. to pray and strengthen our so uls before leav ing school.

Third Term. The Young Moderns and Ca reers Group went for an inspection tour of St. Vincent's. The Current Affairs and Debating Groups have kept the notice board filled with topical news on politics, sport and Australian news.

All the groups held a successful Courtesy Week Campaign in the Second Term, and Mission Week in the Third Term. On the last day they held a concert in aid of the Missions in the school. The two Fashion and Etiquette Groups and the Young Moderns .Group held a fashion parade which was very popular. The Current Affairs and Debating Group wrote and performed a play. "Brutus and Alithia." A substantial sum was raised during this Week .

President: LORRAINE GILBERT. Secretary: GAIL ROGERS. We have been told by the Pope that the great task of Catholic Action today is to change and christianise the environment. The ultimate mission of Catholic Action is the mission of the Church, to save souls. So in our schools we have the Young Catholic Students' Movement , which is the apostolate of students. The members must try to christianise their environment and the values and 'standards of all people they come into contact with as students.

Therefore we sum up the aim of the Y.C.S. by saying it is an apostolate of schoolboys and schoolgirls - an apostolate to all students. non-Catholics as well as Catholics. It seeks to help students to live the full Christian life of the student , to be "good" students, Christian students in every sense of the word. It seeks to form leaders for post-school Catholic Action . And it seeks to make our Catholic students aware of their tremendous responsibilities in the world of tomorrow, and to get them here and now to train themselves in every way to assume those responsibilities.

Throughout the year, our two Career Groups. led by Sandra Hogarth and Kathleen Canty, have given talks and put up notices about various careers, with the a im of helping the girls to choose suitable careers for themselves.

The TV and Radio Group, led by Pauline Cremean, aims at trying to form a Catholic attitude to these two forms of entertainment, and has had many discussions on the effects of TV and films on the student environment.

The Drama and Literature Group, led by Suzanne Dittmer, has had many a valuable discussion about varieties of literature, papers and topics of general interest in the light of Christian principles.

Another popular Y.C .S. group this year was the Sport Group, of which Maureen Donovan was leader. They organised many ba!lketball matches during second term , were willing to help in any sporting activities throughout the year, and also had many talks about the Christian attitude to sport.

The Marian Group, with Colleen McDonald as leader, had man y interesting and enlightening discussions about Our Lady, the part she played in the Gospels. and the devotion and love th at we all should have for her.

Two Discussion Groups were introduced this year, one of which had Maree Croall for leader. Instead of the more usual form of activity, the members of this group, by discussion, help one another to find the Catholic point of view on all kinds of subjects which interest them. page

The second Discussion Group. led by Kathleen Barden , devotes part of its time to the interests of the Missions. Throughout the year the group has organised collections, such as a stamp a nd book drive , and has had man y discussions about the mi ss ions a nd mission work .

This year there are three divi sions of the Y .C.S. - the Leaders. the Activity Group Members, and the General Members. Those belonging to the first two sections keep up a Daily Plan of Life - Mass on one da y of the week besides Sunday, daily Gospel meditations, da ily Rosa ry. etc.

They have found th e Pl an of Life most helpful for their own spiritual lives. and have ag reed th at through it they have obtained a deeper knowl edge of Our Lord. a greater love for Him. and a greater desire to act in His service .

THE P.T.A.A. The motives of the members of the Pioneer Total Abstinence Association are to give glory and consolation ,t.o the Sacred Heart of Je sus; give good example to his weaker and more tempted brethren ; practise selfdenial in imitation of the Sacred Heart; make effective Reparation to the Sacred Heart for sins of intemperance; and that by prayer, strengthened by the free and voluntary sacrifice of their right to drink , they might help in the conversion of excessive drinkers.

Each term we have had a General Mee ting for all the members of th e Y .C.S. At th ~ first meeting held one lunchtim e owards he end of April. six girls from the two Discussion Groups participated in a debate.

"Are Catholics Today Planning Too Much Emphasis on the Material Aspects of Life?" Sandra Hogarth. of the Ca reer Group. then gave a talk on the three th erapies - speech therapy. physiotherapy. occupational th era py.

The second General Mee ting occupied the Thursd ay afternoon of Y.C .S. Week . The Drama Group entertained and edified us with two short plays. "The Cross Shop" and "St. Peter and the Sinners." Sandra Hogarth spoke on the import ance of choosing the vocation which God wishes us to follow. Another member of the Career Group, Julie Davies, indicated some of the openings for University graduates, while Marie Stewart offered some interesting information about part-time courses in domestic arts, etc .. which can help to prepare a girl for married life . Ronlyn Baker and Ann e Cos tigan , in a lively game of shuttlecock. showed us " how not to b ~ a good sport. " We hope our a udience was more influenced by the Christian attitude displayed by their opponents, Pauline McCormack and Patricia C urrigan. There were few sympathisers for the government in the debate between the two Discussion Groups - 'TV ls a Hindrance to the Cultural Deve lopment of Students." We think the opposition had a fairly weak case. despite popular support. The meeting, which had been well advertised by the Poster Group, concluded with a film about Our Lady.

At the General Meeting scheduled for mid-November. the emphasis wil l be on the life-long obligation of the Christian to carry out apostolic work wherever she finds herself.

Through their groups and through the General Meetings the Y.C.S. members are tackling the problem of TV, films. radio , literature , etc .. and are doing their best to bring closer to Christ all those with whom they come into contact.

The members undertake the following obligations on admi ss ion: To make the Heroic Offering. which is a promise to abstain from all alcoholic drinks for life; to recite the Heroic Offering in the morning and evening: to wear the badge, either Pioneer or Probationer, publicly. The Pioneer does not take the pledge because she is afraid of drink , but so as to undertake life-long total abstinence for the sake of the Sacred Heart and for those who sin through drink .

JUNIOR TENNIS When word went round that Sister Una was watching for girls to be chosen as possible members of the Junior Tennis Team all eligible competitors met regularly, either in combat or friendship, to play off the eliminations.

At last the lucky eight members were chosen, and it was announced that they would play St. Columba's. With steady determination all the girls emerged from their battle triumphant, and were refreshed later with afternoon tea prepared by the helpful prefects. The St. Columba's girls were very friendly , and everyone enjoyed themselves immensely. We then played Kilmaire and won two of our four sets. We didn 't know whether we were declining or the other schools improving, but in the match against Our Lady's, Heidelberg, we were defeated in three sets.

Interest in the tennis team is growing steadily, and we hope more enthusiasm is shown every year in order to promote our young ''Ashley Coopers" to better playing.

SENIOR TENNIS Tennis played a prominent part in the first term this year, and the tennis team, afte.r practising after school in all weathers, was rewarded with moderate success. Mr. Guiney's hints on Fridays, as well as Sister Una 's encouragement and enthusiasm, were vital factors in our wins over St. Columba's and Siena. Unfortunately, Kilmaire, Heidelberg and Genazzano proved too strong for us, but wait till next year!

After a very complicated tennis ladder (thank you , Sport Group) and numerous"elimination rounds the team was chosen: Anne Costigan, Elizabeth Hogarth. Julie Davies, Sandra Hogarth. Ronlyn Baker, Maureen Canty, Lorraine Gilbert and Susan Griffith. Even then the team was not immune to changes of position. since very remarkable things were revealed when. for example, No. 2 and 4 ·-pairs played off.

On the whole, the tennis weathet was good. except one day when we waited all afternoon for the courts .t o dry, and finally retired exhausted to share afternoon tea with our rivals . from St. Columba's. This match was later played after school, accompanied by enthusiastic barracking from our supporters, especially the Second Form. A return match was played in perfect weather at Essendon.

A transistor radio and scores of the first League match were almost compensation for a rainy day at Heroelberg which ended in defeat.

Friday , 9th: Last practice before our first match . Everyone was nervous. Prophecies came true. Only one goaler survived the 100 goals a day for the week. At 4.25 last-minute instructions were given by the "coach ." Girls in "A " and "B" teams d~ided to meet at the station. Other girls were reminded to bring cakes and oranges.

Saturday, 10th: I woke at 7.30 and went to Mass to pray for the teams .

I had the jitters up to the time I met the girls at the station . You could not possibly meet the wrong group. The gold and white uniforms stood out. We boarded the 12.15 train and were met by the girls from Killester.

Both matches were played together, and, when the final bell sou nded , C.L.C. were victors for both. At afternoon tea the best and fairest players were announced. Before leaving we saw over Killester's new sc hool. (Jt was not half as nice as ours.) We did not go straight home, but came up ' to sc;hool to tell Sister of our victories.

This is a true account of a week in a C.L.C. basketball player's life.

THE FORM IV PLAYS 1n the Third Term, Form IV was set the ta sk of producing eight plays as part of their English examination. The girls were duly divided into eight groups, which immediately began practisi ng, planning and painting. Every part of the production was in the hands of the girls. Two plays were performed each clay, and were followed with a critical discussion.

The Orama Week began with excerpts from a tragic Irish drama and from a Shavian comedy. This note of variety was maintained throughout. The girls, though they faulted some times in production and acting, are to be congratulated. Naturally the sce nery could not be elaborate, but the girls concerned were enthusiastic and tried mo st ingeniously to give th e atmosphere of each pl ay. As the week progressed we became firm friends with the ubiquitous rocking chair and reel fireplace. Some of the costuming was quite professio na l, notably so in " Riders to the Sea." Noteworthy among the actresses were Majella Broderick, as a senile elderly lady in "The Patch-Work Quilt," and Carmel Burke, as a bewitching fairy in the Yeats' play, "La nd of Hea rt s' Desire." Others such as Rosemary Buckley, Lucy Piovesan and Julie Cas hman reached an excellent sta nd ard.

The performance of plays such as these do much to develop the ingenuity of the girls, and some times to uncover dormant talent. They form a valuable and enjoyable part of the English curriculum.

FORM Ill DRAMA NIGHT That dreaded moment had come! The Marian Choir were filing off the stage, and in about five seconds the curtain would be opening. The girls behind the scenes were hysterically wishing one another luck . As the curtain opened, the panic was replaced by a nervous tension which grew less as the plays went on.

The first play, "The Crimson Coconut," presented by Loyola. went off reasonably well. In this play, actresses and audience took it in turn s to laugh. The audience showed their appreciation of many of the jokes cracked by Robert and Co .. while all on stage nearly doubled up with CAR ITA S

laughter when Nancy, who was crawling out from under one of the res taurant table s, tried in vain to tip up that obstinate piece of furniture. .. . Yet, despite the fun derived from the acting, everyone in that team heaved a sigh of relief as the curtain closed and th e audience applauded.

The finicky business of changing sce nes was tackled and completed a ft e r eac h pl ay while the Marian C hoir prese nted their items in front of the curtains.

The next play, 'The Ugly Duckling," was very difficult to produce.

It was prese nted by Marita, and, although it was not written as a comedy , it prov ed very amusing in parts. The actresses pl ayed their roles with unusual intellig ~ n ce, a nd brought the performance through with flying co lours.

Aikenhead 's play, .. Queer Street:· was a roaring success . It was written to be la ughed a t, and th e girls in Aikenhead really made it live up to what the author intended. lt was evident what fun the team derived from performing it. a nd the cockney acce nt wa s very well portrayed.

Last, but not leas t, was Yincenti a with C harl es Dickens' "C hristm as Carol." Again, thi s was not a n easy play to produce . This was, pe rhaps, more difficult than a ny of the other plays, as the curtains had to be opened and closed in the middle , an d the sce nes changed. But, a ll difficulties being overcome, they made it very realistic, and the last curtain closed on a justly contented team. But Scrooge , not quite fini shed with the a udience , stuck he r head out from behind the curtains a nd waved comically to someone in th e ha ll. This unpre meditated act ra ised ye t a nother laug h from th e audience.

The well-earned pri ze was won by Aikenhead, a nd th e two pri zes for the best ac tresses by Robert , th e waiter, played by C hri stine Youn g (Loyola), a nd Mr. Hart, burgl a r, pl ayed by Jill Boswe ll (A iken head).

Not only the actresses, but everyone in Form 111 , would lik e to thank Sister Mary Helen a nd Miss Bongiorno and also Sister Mary Colombiere a nd the Marian Choir for the work a nd tim e they put into ma king our Drama Night a success.

PARACLETE ART EXHIBITION OF 1961 This ex hibition wa s held at Cat hedral Hall at th e end of August.

About 3,000 exhibits from Catholic sc hool s in Victoria were sent to C. L.C . for the preliminary sorti ng before each grade 's work was se nt to a different centre for judging . Considering th at each school was per mitted to send in only six entries for a class, thi s number represents a great section of the Ca tholic school students. Only a bout 600 e xhibits were able to be shown a t the Exhibition, a nd in the se C.L.C. was very well represe·nted. First Prize in the Matricul ation Section was awarded to Raza Zizis, a nd Second Pri ze in th e Form H was given to Ime lda Freeman.

Honourable Mentions were gained by Pauline Kittel , of Form V. Susan in the Science a nd Art Project section were cdone by Margaret Meagher, Peart, of Form IV. a nd Geraldine Ahern , of Form I. Interesting e xhibit s Anne Co rrie, Jilli a n Uniacke a nd Patricia May. It is to be hoped that C .L.C. student s m a int ai n thi s sta nd ard in th e ir Ar t. a nd e xhibit even more of their work in the 1962 P arac le te Art Show.

The Inter-College Relay was an event which caused much excitement and interest. Four C .L.C. team s competed with various other colleges in the Under 10, Under 12, Under 14 and Open Relay s.

The Matriculation Relay in which fo1:1r present Matric. girls competed with girls from past Matric classes is an event which is looked forward to every year, and was greeted with equal enthu siasm thi s year. These were the only two event s of the day when all the girls were supporting the one team.

At the end of the sport s the girls ma rched on to the arena again. where Fr. Harman was waiting to present the Cups.

Marita won the Sports for the eleventh time in succession , with Vincentia not far behind. Thus 'the C .L. C. 1961 Sport s ended, and all

the girls agreed that an enjoyable tim e was had by all , and that the y are eagerly looking forward to next year.
