l-fow The Story Began "Fond of reading , taking delight in all that was refined and elegant, intell ectually quick, and wide in sympathy, Mary was well prepared to learn from observation of the world around her , and to profit by th e opportunities she enjoyed in social intercourse. Her education did not end with her school-days; she lea rned something worth knowing eve ry day of her life; and by the time sh e was eighteen or twenty years of age, she was a very int eresting girl, and a most agreeable companion."

Such was the girl who a bout thirty y ears later, as Superior General of the Irish Sisters of Charity, was to bid far ewell to five of her Sisters about to leave on the Australian mission in the following words: "May you ever remember that your engagements can only be fulfilled by ci constant and generous exercise

They fac ed their difficult a dapta tion to new socia l conditions and, in addition to th eir work in th e gaols, th ey v isited the sick a nd th e poo r ci ncl instructed th e ignorant. Others w ere fir ed by th eir zea l to join th e Congregation a nd soon they w ere a ble to take up th e heavy burd en of conducting schools suddenly depri ved of fund s by th e new Education Act. They bravely too k up tha t burden a nd th ey have borne it brave ly eve r sinc e. Soon their fi eld of labour wid ened a nd in 1888 with the fruit o f fifty y ea rs' experienc e of colonia l life behind them, the Sisters of Charity came to M elbourn e at th e requ est o f Hi s Gra ce, Archbi sho p Ca rr.

Berchmans felt th e p.ressing need for a Hospital, good fri end s negoti a ted the purchase of Cha lm ers Church property, in Gipps Street a nd Gre y Street, as a site for St. Vincent 's, but obj ections w ere rnised because of the close proximity to th e old Scotch College, and so

instead of the hospital. it was decided to erect a convent here a nd to transfer the school to this site a nd build the hospital on the site of St. Patrick"s School.

An extension of the Grey Street frontage was obtained and building operations were begun. The blue stone of the former Chalmers Church was used in the erection of the Convent and some of the stained glass windows were utilised. The brick building near Gipps Street (now Parliament Place), which had been the Greek Church and the residence of the Greek priest, was converted into a senior scl;ool and is now known as Aikenhead House. The main building of the old St. Patrick"s School was trnnsferred to the new site and erected as a well-equipped college building.

While the ccn vent was in course of erection, the Sisters came each day from a temporary resid ence in Albert Street. The new convent was dedicated to Our Lady of The Sacred Heart, and the Sisters began their work under her special protection. Her statue was erected in a niche in the front of the convent building.

At this tim e the demand for secondary education for girls was increasing. Alrea dy at St. Patrick 's the Sisters had prepared pupils for the matriculation examination with excellent results, so that a t th e formal opening of the Coll ege, His Grace, Archbishop Carr, was pleased to congratulate the Sisters on the successes already achieved. Th ese included thirteen matriculation certificates, with four first class honours, and the Royal Academy medal for th e highest marks in senior grade pia noforte. His Grace knew that this was the result cf hard work a nd he hoped the College would have eve n grea te r successes in th e future. H e

First Students of Honour.

Formal Opening of Th e College The formal opening of the College took place on 20th March, 1902. As considerable inconvenience had been caused by confusion with St. Patrick's College, S.J., a new name was decided on, and it was then that th e Catholic Ladies' College came into existence, with Mother M. Laurence as first Mother ~Rectress.

The motto chosen for the college was "Knowledg e and Virtue United." The aim of the Sisters of Charity was and is to produce good Catholic women, thoroughly trained not only for this life, but to attain to their ultimate goal , the possession of the Beatific Vision for Eternity. So from the early ·days the training of the students has been based on the solid

felt certa in that, spacious as was the present accommodation, th e good Sisters would in the [uture find it necessary to extend th e present buildings. Th e course of studies imparted by rh e Sisters of Charity, as the motto of the school indicated, was " Knowledge and Virtue United."

This was true education, and he tru sted tha t it would produce lasting fruits.

Laurence watched the growth of the School. At the end of her period of office she could look back on a n excellent record of passes in the public examinations and in music examinations. Numb ers of pupils had already entered 1 eligious life, others had completed University courses a nd several ha d been invested with the badg e of honour , th e most coveted award of a ny C.L.C. girl. The students of honour were invested by His Grace the Archbishop, and by th eir Excellencies Lady Northcote , Lady Dudley, Lady Gibson-Carmichael. and Lady Denma n. To gain the gold badg e inlaid with p ea rls and rubies, the former emblematic of the purity of the wearer, the latter of her loyalty to God, to country, to home and to Alma Mater, a student must have spent at least four years at the College or have passed through the senior class with distinction and have been

of honour were invested by His Grace on the occasion of the Silver Jubilee.

Mother M. Eugene took up duties as Mother Rectress in 1930. but her health failed, and suffering was to be her lot for the remaining months of her life. She returned to Sydney 'and died the following year. She was a nun of outstanding holiness and C.L.C. surely had its share in the merits of her patient suffering. She was followed by Mother M. Phillippa, whose name is synonymous with love of the poor.

These depression years were times "Of great financial strain for the College, but her charity was never appealed to in vain.

Phillippa was known to an older generation of C.L.C. students, for she was assistant to Mother M . Canice. and counted only by the angels were her " little unremembered acts of kindness and of love." Her last years were spent in Tasmania, where she laboured even after the diamond jubilee of her religious profession.

Surely God's poor opened wide the gates of heaven when this saintly nun went to meet her heavenly Spouse. We trust that she has still at heart the interests of C.L.C. , whose pupils found inspira tion in her shining example of charity.

In 1934 the great Eucharistic Congress brought ma ny eminent church dignitaries to Melbourne, and at the invitation of Mother M .

Inigo. His Eminence Cardinal McRory honoured the College with a visit, after saying Mass in the Convent Chapel. Some of the past pupils of C.L.C. can recall with pride the honour they felt in being the chosen Hower strewers in the Eucharistic Procession through the city streets on this memorable occasion.

The death of Mrs. R. Park at this time deprived the College of one of its most faithful and esteemed supporters. An ex-student of the College (Allie Tynan) , she was President of the Past Pupils' Association and of the Mothers' Association. which came into being through her organising ability. She had devoted much of her time to working for the welfare of the College, and had org anised several most successful functions. Her name lives on, as the Mothers' Association continues to do for the College what Mrs. Park intended it to do .

Commemoration Day. It was in 1935, at the suggestion of Mother M . Virgilius, that the annual Commemoration Day was inaugurated for the past pupils, when they gather in the Convent Chapel and offer the

Holy Sacrifice of the Mass for the repose of the souls of deceased teachers and pupils of the College. Very early in the history of the College, the Past Pupils' Association had been formed. Refer<>nce has already been made to the founding of the C.L.C. Newman Exhibition, and throughout the yea rs its members have been a strong support to their Alma Mater.

Two names which have been linked for many years with C.L.C. are worthy of special mention,---Miss Mary Jones and Miss Eva Rush.

Both were students of honour in the early days of the College and both have given their best as committee members of the P ast Pupils' Associa tion. and as members of the College staff.

When Miss Rush retired a few years ago her loss was deeply felt by pupils and staff alike, for she had endeared herself to all by her kindly genuine interest in each pupil, and by

her cheerful co-operation in all that concerned the welfare of the College.

"Caritas" A new feature was introduced into the life of the College in 1937 when the C.L.C. magazine .. Caritas" was produced for the first time.

The need for a College annual had been long felt, but it needed the keen enthusiasm of the Honour Class of 1937, and the kindly encouragement of Mother M . Virgilius to make it a reality. In .. Caritas .. we can reca pture the spirit of enthusiasm that gripped the school on sports days, the subdued excitement of the annual College ball, pride in their performance on speech days , and their spirit of fervour during the annual retreat... Caritas.. appeared annu· ally even during the war years until 1948, when a combined magazine for all the colleges conducted by the Sisters of Charity was suggested.

This production appeared for the fir st time in 1950, under the title .. Caritas, " and in it is incorporated the C.L.C. magazine. It will appear every two years, and besides strengthening the school spirit it will widen the horizon of its readers, so that they will shan the deeper spirit that binds all pupils of the Sisters of Charity.

H ealesville.

W a r years brought vital changes to C.L.C. Aikenhead House was taken over by the military and a large proportion of the pupils up to the Intermediate class evacuated to "Alpine Lodge," Healesville. M emories of the;e times linger in the minds of some of the present senior pupils, and they sigh wistfully for their boarding school days. No doubt long walks and rides in the hills did much to build up vigorous constitutions which are such a n asset on the sports field today. but it was n·qt, ali story-book style!

There were many difficulties inherent in this evacuation scheme, and though they· were courPage Ten

ageously faced by Mother M . St. Agnes, who had to divide her time between C.L.C. at home and abroad , a nd by a generous, cheerful staff, yet a ll were very happy when they were once again back at C.L.C. But they sti ll cherish grateful memories of good fri end s who help ed them in moments o f crisis!

The generosity of both present and past pupils was evident in war years in the services so gladly given to the C.W.O. M embers of the Mothers' A ssociation were most devoted to their .. day at the Hut... M any ex-stud ents joined various branches of the army ser vices.

Approval as " A " C lass S chool.

The high stand ard of the College as an educational establishment was given formal recognition by the Schools' Board when in 1947, a fter detailed inspection of a ll departments , it was approved as an .. A .. class school. qualified to hold its own interna l intermedia te examinati on. Although this makes greater demands on the sta ff . it is a great benefit to the students, as it reduces examina tion strain to a minimum.

The obtaining of this a pproval for Catholic cclleges was due in a la rge measure to the efforts of the la te Miss Julia Flynn.

Th e erection of a new college had been given much thought for some years. a nd it w as hoped that a ft er th e war, building operations would be commenced. Howeve r , it was not possible to undertake a large building project, a lthough the big increase in the number o f pupils made addition a l acco mmodat ion imperative. To ease the congestion, Moth er M . Francis decided to utilise th e space between the convent a nd the sc ience room, a nd here was erec ted a twostorey building conta ining a large modern class room a nd a ha ll. The latte r has become a centre of school life. a nd so has been the scene o f varied ac ti v iti es, fro m First Communion breakfasts to farewe ll parties to ma triculation stude nts a bcut to enter religious life-weekl y da nce lessons for present pupils a nd debutantes' practice for th eir bow to society- for Y.C.S. ga th ering s- art and craft ex hibitions- a nd at least one st ud ents' ma nn equin parade, while ac' jc ining it, a nd of v ita l im porta nc e, is the most modern, most popul a r o f cafeterias. It is in this department tha t th e generous assista nce of the M oth ers' Auxili a ry is so much a pprecia ted.

Foundress of th e College, who is a t present visiting C.L.C. on the occa sion of the Golden Jubilee. It wa s a grea t joy for her to know tha t so many loya l pa st pupils were sending th eir da ughters to s ha re their privileges as pupils of their own Alma M a ter. M embers of the Mothers' Auxiliary and past pupils have also given very generous assista nce to the improvement of the College Library. New shelving has been added and modern equipment introduced to bring it into line with up-to-da te librari es. In this the benefit of Miss Molli e Cantwell 's experience has been a great asset, a nd we owe a deep debt of gra titud e to Miss Ursula O 'Connor, a past pupil of C.L.C. , who spent ma ny hours completing the cataloguing a ccording to the Dewey System. Miss O 'Connor has recently gone abroad to visit libraries in England and on the Continent, and no doubt not only the Public Library, to whose staff she is a ttached, but also C.L.C. will gain by her increased knowledge. Other recent additions to the school equipment include a public address system, so tha t all rooms may be contacted from the office, a nd pupils ma y ben~ fit by edu cational broadca sts, and a sound film proj ector,

From the foundation of th e Colleg e stress has been lai d on the d ee p spiritual tra ining of th e pupils, but tod ay we may say this is even a greater necessity tha n in ea rlier times, for it is a paga n a tmosph ere tha t surrounds the modern girl. H ence th e more pressing need for her to be a nim a ted by solid Christian principles.

In the Y.C.S. mov ement she finds th e mea ns to form in herse lf such a Christian outlook on a ll phases of her life, for in her Gospel discussions s he lea rns to go to th e source of Christian truth, Christ Him se lf. In studying scenes from the Gospel she learns to pra y, to meditate, ' and so Christ, her King and Leader, becomes to her more a nd more a Rea lity. She comes to realise tha t H e matters supremely for eac h one of us, and our a ttitude to Him is more important than a nything else ever can be for us personallya nd so she comes to know that th-;:oughout her life she will find in Him Light, Life a nd Love.

To His Gra ce, Most Rev . Dr. Mannix, C.L.C. owes a deep debt ot gratitude for his untiring int erest in all that concerns the Colleg e. For many years he has celebrated Holy Mass a t the ccnclusion of the Children 's Annual Retreat in the Convent Chapel, and has presid ed at Speech Days in the College Hall. On eve ry occasion his words have been an inspiration to students to strive to live up to the great tr aditions of the College and to let the light of their example as Catholic women shine in the darkness of the pagan world tha t surrounds th em.

Re v L. Moran, devoted Chaplain to the College for many years, has been of specia l assistanc e to Y.C.S. Leaders. To Rev. Fr. Mayne, S.J .. Rector of Corpus Christi College, Werribee, members of the Y.C.S. Movement are also deeply indebted. Since the inception of this movement in the College, Fr. Mayne's inspiration h as never failed to awaken new enthu siasm in its leaders for the cause of Christ.

And so our earnest prayer at the close of the first fifty years of the history of C.L.C .. is that all who have learnt to live under the banner of "Knowledge and Virtue" and those who are to follow will ever be loyal to the heritage that is theirs . And that heritage will be handed on.

For though the outward appearance of the C.L.C. girl has undergone many changes throughout the years, at heart she is ever the same. She was keen at sport in the early days of the College, as she is today, though today the chosen teams are of inter-state importance; ready to give her best co-operation in the College choir in the "Hail Knowledge!

Hail Virtue!" of the formal opening day, as in the exultant "Jubilate" of today ; enthusiastic too in her studies, and " resolved to do her best in them" as she consecrates them to Our Lady, Seat of Wisdom, in her daily Y.C.S. prayer; fervent in her a nnual Retreat as were her sisters of former years; and so whether she appears in the frills and sweeping skirts of the first decade, the trim skirts and blouses and gem hats of the second. the grey frocks of the third, the navy a nd grey of the fourth , or the brown and blue cf the fifth, the spirit of the C.L.C. girl is unchanged throughout the years , for -
