Whe n Scho ol Is Ove r RECENT writer has had a good deal to say ahout what he maintains is a somewhat disturbing feature of our times. What concerns him is that thousands of people who have had a good education make no use of it 0r give no indication of it <>.fter leavi.'lg school, but become instead "deliberat ely lowbrow."

Since much of his criticism is directed to young women who have been well educated, we take the liberty of quoting him. He claims that what takes place is the result of snobbery -the snobbery of "anti- culture."

"Whereas in the Victorian age a taste for the highest and best was considered imporiant, to-day the avowal of a taste for Beethoven is considered embarrass ing; while cultivated and intelligen t persons, concealing their knowledge of the arts, talk learnedly about the predilectio ns of prizefighters . . Few moderns would be willing to confess to a taste for Bach or Wordswo rth, yet they would willingly avow their admiratio n for ''The Prattler' or Jack Hylton's band."

In the same way, he goes on, many young women, educ3ted to love the highest when they see it, within a few years discard their school culture with as little compunct ion as they discard their school chapel and school clothes. Jazz replace~ music, Edgar Wallace literature, and Myrna Loy or Clark Gable the earlier schoolgirl loves of Chopin or Francis Thompson . If by c>.ny chance the young woman's deteriorat ion be sufficientl y ret:irded to enable her to retain her taste for great literature or high thoughts, she is careful to let pass her lips no word which might betray her secret indulge nc·es.

This c;·iticism may be too sweeping, but it certainly gives rise to a number of reflections . The first is that being an educated person does not just depend on one's having been to a fairly high-class school. If the picture he paints be true, it only shows th& error of imagmmg that the school does everythin g for us, i;,nd that nothing remains to be done when school is over; and the irony of it is that when people look round for an explanatio n they usually blame the education al establishm ent or system. Instead,

nobody is at fault except those who set about squanderi ng the heritage of good tast e which had taken years to accumulat e.

The fact is that school is never over, or, at leas t, ought not to be. It may be rather thrilling to feel that at last we are going to take our own life into our own two ha nds, but it is a mistake to think that one's education is over when the school gate is closed for the final time, above all to succumb to the temptation that one is now entitled to a jolly gocd time. For, since education really aims at teaching us the art of living properly and completel y, it is certain that our education never e nds, because we are living all the time.. The error lies in confusing education with mere instruction , with mere informatio n or with the acquiring of technique in one direction or another. It is for this reason that we have in our midst the dangerous iliusions that we do not have to learn how to live or that the adult stands in no need of education or direction, and thus is left to drift helplessly or desperatel y.

The tragedy of many is that they n ever ripen, ne ver mature, remaining at forty and fifty with much the same spiritual and mental endowme nts they had on leaving school.

Thus they have no defence against the influences which lower or demoraliz e the tone of mind and character.

And these remarks apply all the more to matters of religion . If it be tragic to misuse or neglect the cultural forces to which we have referred, when this happens in religious matters it is stark tragedy; and unfortuna tely it does happen . Many of the graduates of our colleges and convents not only do not exert the influence which their superior education would lead one to expect cf them, but even on occasions give the worst of example, and for much the same reasons as in the first case. For if no side of our education is complete when we leave school, leas t of all is the religious side. It is true that certain religious habits have been formed and the Catechism learnt; but these again are only the raw materials; and it is the misfortun e of many that they never develop spiritually , that they are content to carry into adult life the religious equipmen t

Beginn ings of Catholic Education .

" To follow the progress of the Church in Victoria is, in great part , to trace the history of our Catholic schools .

Cath olic Action Although it is cinly two years since its inauguration by Rev. Fr. Moran , our College chaplain, our Catholic Action group has become quite a feature in the life of Aiken head House.

As last year, the group m eetings are held once fortnightly , on Monday afternoons. But whereas last year one or two girls were deputed to write papers on various topics of importance which were read to the members, the discussions this year have been conducted on very much more informal lines .

Each month a t the general Catholic Action meeting at the offices of the Secretariat, the leaders of the varic·us groups are presented with p rogrammes to be conducte d at the meetings.

We talk about our attitude to those with whom

w e come in contact and the different ways we can spread Catholic Action among our associates. We hav e also held interesting discussions about our a musements, such as the books w e read, the radio and the cinema. We sometimes find that modern am usements are detrimental to our Catholic Faith, and we must be able to discern those that are harmful. It is only by this means that we are able to preserve our faith and goodness, and give good example to those arnund us. We sincerely hope that the Catholic Action Group will aid us in this respect.

The Group officials this year are: Eileen Malone, Leader; Josie Ncseda, Treasurer ; Joan Martin, Secretary.

Visi t Of Mos t Rev" Dir" Beo vich ROUDLY , but with a feeling of deep regret, we offered our sincere congratu lations to Most Rev. Dr. Beovich on the eve of his departur e for Adelaide . For many years we had known him as our Christian Doctrine Examine r, and it was certainly with some feeling of trepidati on that some of us anticipat ed his visits on some occasions .

Always, however , our souls were strength ened by his helpful advice, for even examination days were not days of mere testing.

He did not simply question ; he also made the answer quite clear, and the impressi ons he made on our minds were lasting. When we assemble d to bid him farewell, prior to taking up duties as Archbish op of Adelaide , we felt that we were losing a friend. And the few words he spoke that morning summed up what had always been put before us as pupils of the Catholic Ladies' College. He realized the privilege it is to be educated in such a school, and he reminded us of the obligatio ns that are, and will be, We apprecia ted very much his Grace's ours. kindness in wearing his pectoral cross on that occasion to let us all see what only

It was a gift from all the Melbour ne schools, and we were pleased to have had a share in it. The college also presente d his Grace with a gold candlesti ck. which was used at his Consecra tion Mass.

Our Head Prefect, Carmel Y c·unes, in a few well-cho sen words, expresse d our deep gratitude to his Grace, and promised him the help of our prayers.

When the new Archbish op, with Rev. Dr. O 'Collins and Rev. D. Conques t and Rev. Dr. Lyons, set out en route for Adelaide , we formed a guard of honour and waved them a last good-bye .

When Archbish op Beovich was in Melbourne recently he found time again to come to see us, and we we re delighted with his surprise visit. He told us that one of the lasi pictures in bis mind leaving Melbourn e was the guard of honour of C.L.C. girls. Of all the days in the wee k to pick, Johnny chooses washing day , and a fter n agging at his mother s ince h e has opened his eyes, mother gives in. At ten o'clock he is dressed and cleaned, and mother gladly shuts the front door and sets out for the tram stop. After wa iting twenty minutes, a tram appears on the horizon. One glance te lls Johnny 's mother that she is not the only person going to town to-day. Every mother in Melbourn e seems to have thought to bring little Jane or Mary to see Father Christmas .

The tram stops with a jerk, and everyGrabbing get aboard. to rushes body Johnny Johnny. the fight to get in starts. girl little sweet a by pushed face his has sta nding in the tram, but that's not all; the tram has scarcely started when a loud howl The little girl, thinking comes from J chnny. he was a doll, poked her finger in his eye.

Johnny's mother scolde d the little girl, and both mothers gave each other an awful glance. By now the sun is high in the heaven , and when the tram reaches the city, it is like a furnace. The tram stops. Then• is one mad rush of screaming children and talking mothers- into a big city s tore they go, all with the same intention , but it is too Father Christmas has n ot come, so early.

Johnny 's mother thinks she will do a little shopping for herself, and after dragging him round the town for three hours, and never passing a shop without buying something or havin g a look at the lates t frocks, she feels a bit tired, so decides that it is time for lunch . The cafe is full, but she m a nages to

find a table, and after asking Johnn y if he would like a nice big glass of cold milk, she looks aro und , and seeing Mrs Jon es in th e other co rn er of th e caf e, calls h er over, and both start talking.

By the time lunching and ta lkin g arc over, it is three o'clock, and then Johnn y reminds her that h e hasn 't seen F at her Christmas yet. After paying the bill she proceeds back to the store-but one look from th e top of th e stairs shows her that the shop is crowded ou t, and after watching th e little train going round and round, she gets hotter and hottEr, and remember ing that colds are raging, pushes Johnny through the Of swinging doors and back into the street.

His ted. disappoin terribly is course, Johnny His arm head aches, and his feet are heavy. aches too where his mother has been pulling him along, so he starts to cry, but all the crying in the world won 't bring Father Christmas to him now . Moth er can't hear him for the noise of the tra ffic , so he is pulled and dragged on and on. At last they reach the tram stop, and again th ey fight Johnny is so tired he their way e n board. cannot speak, but falls asleep on his mother's lap, but not feeling ve ry comfortab le, Jets out a kick which hits a man on th e leg.

This takes a little glossing over, but a t last they reach their stop, where Daddy is waitJohnny runs to him , but when Daddy ing. did you like Father him: "How asks Christmas , son?" he bursts into a flood of tears, an d before Daddy ha s time to ask why, Mother takes charge of th e conversati on. telling him all about the beautiful hat s he saw in a Bourke Stree t window.

At last it dawns on me: they are rejoicing, because of the spring. Nature is awakening ; buds are bursting forth in an array of greens, light and dark.

The flowers are deckin g th e gardens in many different colours. On the ground, little Early Nancys, or Harbinge rs of Spring, are bursting in to bloom.

The busy bees are on the wing, gath·zring the honey from th e sweet-sce nted flow ers. All nature is heralding the spring.

THESE lines, so worthy of our attention today. a.re ta ken from "The House of Christmas" which strikes the key note of Chesterton 's Christmas Poems, a delightful little collection of simple and b€autlful religious verse.

"The House of Christmas" is perhaps the most bea utiful of the poems, for it is a song of taith and love and perfect peace, which are to be found only in the spiritual love of all mankind , and it h as , too. a sort of childish wonder in "the things that cannot be and that are," while the whole poem is pervaded by a lilting joy which echoes through every stanza and bursts into song in the la.st line of each.

The success of ''The House of Christmas" in conveying the spirit of the season is undoubt edly due to the personality of Chesterton. who remained until his death in many ways a little child, and it is this same personality which gives their charm to the songs for the guilds, the Carpenters, the Shoemaker s and the Painters.

In these there is the same sense of joy conveyed by the mood of the poem and the same depth of thought, which is so subtly introduced that we almos t miss it at fir st re ading. Thz gr.e at lesson of these poems is that man has great dignity, for God "sent him from the old red hills and sending made him free" and that it. is his duty to preserve that dignity forever. whatever his station in ,life . In addition to this central teaching, each of the poems contains special lessons for the guild which is to use it 'tnd th ese are expressed with all th z simplicity. colour and delicacy which the guilds brought to their work .

Less delicate but rather more colourful and musical is ''The Nativity." This is again a tale of wond er , a series of pictures, imaginings and questions with the constant refrain "A Child is born ." This. unlike the poems already mentioned , is not the expression of the ideas of a

simple child or of an artisan. It is the credo of one who is "weary of learning and art," and who has come to realise that the best thing in life is simple trust in the Child Who is born .

When the habit of doubting begins to creep In again, it is crushed out, "Hush-how may we know ?-knowing only A Child is born ."

The last poem, "A Child of the Snows," is in a quieter vein than the others although it is no less joyous. It creates the atmosphere of a night of snow when the earth is wrapped in a white mantle of wonder, and the minds of men going out and seeing its beauty are Jed "to th e ancien t inn Where the Child in the frost is furled " Till they "follow the feet, whe:"3 all soul3 meet At the inn at the end of the \\Orld."

And it is here that Chesterton leaves us m his Christm as Poems, at an inn a t the end of •he world where the gods that ru1e our daily life lie dead and cold, and the colour of the leaves and the flame of the sun are lost in th e radiance of A Child of the Snow. " Kathleen Cummins, B.A.

ma ny things. On the day of Lhe m a rch , the Town Hall was . de cora ted ; crow;:ls were be low in the street; but I was off.ended because I was not the only flag on the Town Hall. I do think they could h a ve let me be the only one.

Some afternoons schoolgirls com2 to the concerts held in the Town Hall. In the night, people come dressed in evening clothes, and it presents a v·c> ry pretty sight. In the evening, at sunset, the Shrine looks ve ry grand silhoue tted aga inst the sky and the sun .

It is very cold for me in the winter, and I a lmo ~t freeze.

In the summer, it is qui~ the reverse. On the hot d ays I see a number of people catching trnrns in Swanston Stree t, going to St. Kilda beach.

Some people would not envy me being a flag, but I do not want to be anything else.

On Looking Into An Old Exercise Book OME tim e ago. while rummaging in an old school bag, long disused and thrown aside, I found , among the brok!m rule1·s. ~ lunted pencils and faded text-book s, an old exerc ise book, dog-ear 2d and grubby, whose fading writing had lon g d efi e d th 0 ravoig e.s of tim e, but whose torn cover and turnedd ow n corne rs, testified to a very yo ung sc holar's many te dious hours. s truggling with the perve rs ities of education.

On turning back the cover (and a sorry pre tence for a cover it was , too 1) I came upon the first page, lavis hly decorated with scrolls and curls, its owner's name proudly inscribed therein. In those days w e look a certain pride in our first page. It was a little a dventure in its elf, starting a new exe rcise book. The resolutions we made to kee p it neat a nd tidy, the plans we made for its a dornment. only alas' to ha ve all our prec io us ideas fade away when the newness of the book began to wear off. But here, on the first page, was my proud and purposeful signature, written with youthful e nthusiasm in my " best" writing, a nd surmounted by undecipherable scrolls and tails, which announced to the world th a t a ne w exercise was about to be begun .

On the second page , when I had got pnst the lurid glory of my frontispi ece, work began in ea rnest. Here is a page o f Latin d eclensions, written when th e yo uthful scholat was in th e very elementary stag 2s of h e r Latin educ:ation. Firs t decl e ns ion held pride of place, with the in evitable " mensa " scra wled across the middle of th e page.

Large, red ticks and crosses certified to th e determined correcting of a young neighbour in the "Change papers, please" days. Her 0 at the bottom of the page , written by th e sa me determined, unkind, young hand , is a conspicuous mark , ten mis takes! Whc;t horrid mE:mories tha t r eca lls. m e mori es of a far-off day when , with bated breath and trembling legs, you rose ·neath Sis ter' s a we-inspiring eye, the terrible s tigma of ten errors hot upon yuu, a ud prayed that th e new priest would cho c:-sio this moment to call, or that the ins pecto r would unexpectedly turn up.

let of t-taring eyes and whispering voice s, and thought yourself disgraced forever.

On th e next few pages were samples of my earliest efforts at French . And what weird and wonderful efforts they were! The French g rammar-bo : ks contain so me of the queere st little sentences that ever found a place in any language.

For instance, one is always being told that my brother has the pen of your aunt. Your sister has not met my brother·s friend. They went soone r than they expectE:d; and such naive , little phrases.

Afte r struggling valiantly with: "'Have you sze n the pen o[ my brother ?'

'No, but I have found your mother's hat,' " this young student evolved something which, to the eyes of any s tartl2d Frenchman whlJ happen ed to r ea d it , would rea d something like this"'Saw you th e - - of the man? ' 'No, but I find the - - of the mother.'"

So much for m y first efforts at French!

NexL in th e bc ok came a sec tion entitled Engli.3h. This co nbin ed essays, Shakespea r 0 ques tion s an d appreciations.

Oh, those essays!; those thrilling descriptions!; th ose n<J iv c appreciations!: th ey would s urely bring a smile to the lips of th e sternest professor that r.v<' r !ive d. Here are titles of some of the es:;ays : "A Day in the Country," "A Thrilling R esc ue ," "A Runaway Horse ."

Hc: rml ess enoug h tit l2s, but how we adorned them ! If we w ent fo r nn imagi na ry picnic to th e hill s, we s tumbled upon amazing adventures, or, more often , di scovered glades of magnificent scene ry and blosso ms, s uch a> this fai;- land had never seen before.

We were certainly lov e rs of beauty, to such an\ ·.~ e xtent that we inves ted Nature with charm-; and beauties s he has never possesse d , <!~d what our essays lack ed in style they atoned for in colour. On " turquoise seas" ( why were they always turquoise?) w 2 enjoyw;j thrilling resc ues and saved drowning men .

We were lost in th e bush , trapped in burn -> .l ing h ouses, attacked by wild bulls, trans ported to th e thirteenth century, and a ltog ~ th e r life was pretty exciting in those g loriously imaginative, incredibly thrilpn g d a ys.

CARITAS Next I discovered an essay on "The Merchant of Venice:· From time immemorial this play has been th e first stepping-stone from which young scholars step into th e great realms of Shakespeare. The number of young students who have painstakingly studied it must be legion. This essay is in the form of an appreciation of the Caske t Scene, by a s tudent who was at the time entirely unappreciative of the beauties of What her imagination Jack ed , Shakespeare. she allowed Shakespeare to fill in, for the essay is filled with enormous quotations carefully culled from the book, and which conveniently take up quite a lot of room. The essay begins in the conventional style: "In Act such and such, Scene X, we see how Bassanio," etc, etc. That was always good for a beginning, and helped one to ge t a flying start along the tedious way of Appreciation.

And finally, in this memorable book, I cam e Here, algeb : a upo n the mathematical section. (just newly learnt), arithmetic and geometry (the high e r art of trigonometry at this time jumbled being thankfully unknown) , are together in an ecstatic ri ot of Q.E .D's., x-y 's, Oh. the square roots, and long divisions. thrill of writing Q.E.D. at th e bottom of your theorem! That quite atoned for the feverish five minutes spent in trying to prov ~ that XY was parallel to AB, or that LxY was a right angle. Quid est demonstrando' How you longed to spread it across the page, your glorious signal of victory over an obstiBut no! the conventions of na:e problem! the classroom demand that yo u writ e it neatly and obscurely at the bottom of your theore m , thus robbing victory of half its <aste.

With this reflection, I at length closed this of humorous memories, and shut it away in its bag-faded little remind er of days that were-days that do not com ~ N e w , as again when the teens are reached.

I sit down at the table to tackle the hom ework that higher classes demand, I cannot help but think of those simpl e ·~ ssay s that gav e such pleasure to write, those glowing descriptions, those passages of vivid imaginathe problems of Richard Somehow tion.

III, the character of King Lear, seem stilted and remote; my imagination is tugging at the bock

my pen longs to write of burning and drowning men; and altoge ther I want to cry with the poet: " Backward, oh, backward, turn Time, in thy flight!

WORK FOR ST. FRANCIS' SOLDIERS' HUT. Knitting socks for soldiers and balaclavas fo1· airmen has been a serious occupatic n for many industricus fingers this year, and we are pleased to know that our socks have been acclaimed ''super.''

Vivid notices on the playgro und notice board have reminded us throughout the year of the value of our least effc rt, in saving waste paper, tooth paste tubes, etc., and how the sacks have groaned with the weight of our efforts, while waiting for the van to call.

Man ; of us are looking forward to having a soldier or two for Christmas dinner. Our Old Ccllegians and the Mothers' Association have helped on alternate Fridays in attending to the material wants of the soldiers who visit the C.W.O. Hut, and w e are all praying for the success of their work and for all the needs of our brave defende rs .

I cry with all my strength, 'I would love Her suffering multiYou so much, Jesus! '" plied; the death of her father, leaving his family in utter poverty, was followed by a se rious spinal disease, which supervened on meningitis, and during her illness she was visited and consoled by her Angel and by Our Blessed Lady and Jesus Himself.

After her miraculous cure, h er spiritual director arranged for her reception into the home of a prudent and Catholic family, where she was protected from profane curiosity and idle gos~ip s uch as s h e would ha ve hen expcsed to in her aunt's poor h ome.

She had begged for suffering, a nd on the feast of the Sacred Heart, 1899, h er Angel witnessed for the first of many times the impression of the Stigmata of th e Wounds of Christ on the body of his saintly C'harge.

Every Thursday for a considerable period this miracle was repeated , and h e r wounds rema in ed open and bleedin g until 3 o'clock on Friday afternoon. But he r des ire for ~uffe rin g was not satisfied, a nd on the First Friday of March, '1901, after a meditation on th e sco urging of Jesus at the Pillar, the Stigma ta of the Scourging was inflicted upon he r body. This wa s repeated each Friday of Ma rch in that year, and was witnessed by her adopted mother, whom s he affectionHer ately addressed as "Mamma Mia." 2c:< tasies were witnessed at o th e r times by her confessor, Mgr Volpi, and various members of the Giannini family, who a ll looked upon this orphan girl as "an angel in human form ." a t every favoured She was singularly period of her life by the visible prese nce of her Angel , and she spoke to him as simply and familiarly as she did to her spiritual and director, to whom she wrote fully humbly about every incident of her s piritual If she were caled a way when talking life. t o her Angel, she would take leave of him with charming courtesy: "Good-bye, dear Angel; offer my salutations to Jesus." Ca ndour and simplicity were the k ey note of all her ac ts a nd words. H e r prayers were spoken informally from her heart, and in her conversations with Our Lord she spoke as a little child upon her father 's knee. The following 1s one of her simple prayers for sinners:-"Jesus think with me of all sinners; I wished them all saved-all! I must think

of sinners only; of the rest, You must think."

Despite h e r almost lifelong suffering, Jes us asked her to bear a greater cross. " I have need," He said t o her, "of a great expiation, specially for the sins and sacrileges by which ministers of the Sanctuary are offering Me." With an impulse of her whole being she accepted: "Dost Thou not know, oh Jesus, Yet at once; exhaust Thy that I accept it? vengeance on me and be glorified in thi s Attacked by a Thy miserable creature." mysterious and most painful malady, she suffered for months what her spiritual director, Father Germanus (Passionist), called a martyrdom in "an ocean of pain." On Holy Saturday, April 11, 1903, she spoke her last words: "Now it is indeed true that nothing more remains to me, Jesus, I r ecommend my poor soul to Thee-Jesus!" After having s pent Good Friday in an ec.>tasy of s ufferin g with her crucified Jes us, h er Angel led the ~ potless soul of Gemma Galgani to celebrate h e r Lord's Resurrection in H eave n.

In October, a Retteat for Old Collegians, arranged by Miss M. Feil, was conducted by The lectures Rev. W. Brennan, C.SS.R. i:-roved a practical help to all those who had the privilege of attending, and to be again in the atmosphere of the College reawakened many a youthful aspiration, and surely the prayers offered in the convent chapel during those two days were most fervent. We only regret that more of our members were not able to avail themselves of this opportunity, but we hope to have more than one Retreat next year.

Not very accustom ed to plays other than amateur producti ons of Shakesp eare and our own efforts, we were somewha t over-awe d at first . But our wonder passed into admirati on. as we entered into the spirit of Greek Drama .

For two weeks before "The Day," races we r :'! run at lunch time, each team striving its utmost to gain the most number of points. Before the day itself, the best runners from each team were selected, and races of 100 yards were run according te· age. These events revealed much ability, hitherto unknown; before many years, we may read of a past C .L.C. pupil competing in the Olympic Games; who knows?

Friday, August 16, the much-awaited day , dawned bright and clear, but later it rained slightly, and although it dampened the curls. the high spirits could be dampened by nothing less than an avalanche. The rain obligingly took the hint and decided to call some other time, and a keen south wind succeeded it, fanning the faces, burning with excitement and enthusiasm.

This yea r a novel race w as introduced into the programme, the "Late for Train " race in which some appeared to be quite experienced.

Although quoit races and egg-and-spoon races were sometimes wen by other teams , Gold won the overhead ball and pass ball, which made firmer its chance of winning the cup, which Sheila Hernon, the captain, proudly accepted from Rev. Father Moran, who also presented Eileen Malone, the captain of the Blues, the cup for basketball. Conquerors and conquered alike, sportingly joined in applause. which accompanied the presenting of the cups.

Carmel is the kind of girl who can hold her own in any conversatio n or argument - on those cccasions when she doesn't monopolize it. Carme l revel s in European hi s tory (?)

Eileen Malone. our sports ca ptain. is the "To,·econd me mbe r of the happy group. morrow and to -morrow a nd lo-morrow,. . for there is always another day for our Eilee n.

With every drop of rnin the thoughts of Sheila Hernon. our third Prefect, flit hom eward lo the Mallee, "far from the maddin g crowd's ignoble strife, .. where she is returning after a few weeks of tcrlure in the exam. room.

Sheila's favourite poet is surely Cowper, who wrote. "God made the country, man made the town."

Our one fair-headed Prefect , Pat. Cadden. is go ing lo gladden th e heart of some employer next year with her typing and shorthand. We hope she does not lose her taste fc.r English literature, but do not use any Chaucerian spelling, Pat. Josie Noseda is kept busy durin g wee k-ends keeping her three kittens from devouring h er thirty chickens, and on Sa turday morning delights Sister Claver with her endless iris designs, the result of h€l' w ee k 's English lesson.

M.ary Menadue, in a fe w years' lime. when she has completed her training a t St. Vincent's, will be ready to assist any present or past pupil in a n emergency -Ask the fireman!

LEAVING PASS CLASS NOTES. •Emilia Ferlazzo is our language student Although she did not tak e music as a subject. her abilities at playing the piano are not to be overlooked. After passing ten Intermediak~ subjects, it is not in the least possible that six s mall L eavin g subjects could offer any difficulties.

Shirley Themas. our future schoc-1 teacher, will be very popular with her pupils. as she will not know wh e ther they are late or not, bein g consistently la te herself. Shirley is one of our promising history pupils.

Barbarn Walsh. the baby of th e class, has as her motto, "Slow but sure." She is certainly s u re to come through her Leaving with flying colours. She is a nother promising chemistry student. At any lesson Barbara's favourite question is, " What does that mean . Siste r'?"

Lorna Douglas graces us with her presence at th e English lesson . She played well as Catherine, th e da ughte r of the French King , in the play on "Commemo ration Day." Lorna ma kes a striking picture on any spc·rts' field.

She is always eager to take part in a basketba ll match.

Betty Vernall, our brilliant history and commercial student, is our sports captain. "George" is an adept at missing a tram, but always come in with a bright, "Good-mor ning, Sister," to receive th e answer, " Good-eveni ng, Betty."

Carmel Roadknight t ook Leaving English this year, as the Commercia l course had to be tackled. Carmel is also usually s uccessful on Sports Day . She plays basketball well , and is a great asset to her side, and a good opponent.

Joan Martin, our one and only class captain, is our Maths. specialist. She has taken up the great occupation of playing the 'cello. In the orchestra. one clearly hears the deep tones of Joa n 's instrument.

Teddie Sullivan, the mother of our clasc, is generally a ble t o make us behave. She re ceived her amount of s pecial a tte ntion, when she w as obliged t o walk with the a id of crutches. This a ilment did not dampen her bright spirits.

Betty Rendall, our great chemistry s t,tdcn t. obtained high marks in both her violin an d piano exams, and no d ou bt will do the sa r.1e in school subjects. She is a lso a prominent m ember cf our orchestra.

Vivienne Kelly, our brave littl e Vivie nn e e njoys pottering around her little ga rden on th e window sill. Vivienne's English answers a re generally handed round as exa mples. Luck y is the tea m th a t has Vivienne on the ir side; in the sports she lea ves everyone else behind.

Rosalie Be~dall, our celebrated h arpist, ha s distinguished herself further by winning the badge for physical culture. Two of her subjects have been in the musical line. No one doubts her ability in obtaining the e the r s.

THE INTERMEDIATES OF 1940.

Al ong by the golden privet hed ge, down the passage, in through the second d oo r to the left. and yo u a re with the Intermedia tes, as fin e and comely a set of girls as yo u wou ld wish to meet.

Our little world is made up of all sorts and sizes. We are coHectively tal e nted, h av ing in our mid st a tennis star or two, a budding poetess, so m e really good actresses, as evidenced by class-room presentations of o ur One -Act Plays. There are also a couple of ultra-artistic adists, while a great many of us are capable of depicting a kettle or an old shoe with feelin g .

Our scientists could out-Newton New ton , our historians are known to speak wisely about many things. We would be un embarrassed at the Tower of Babel, for our fluency in French a nd Ge rm a n w o uld s tand us in good stead, not

to mention the fact that a select few of us could lapse into Latin or Ita lian if need arose. Pian is tes we have in goodly number, and a violinist - our representative in the Schoo l orchestra .

There are also in our midst two fine country lasses, who are known to pine h ourly for the flesh-pots of Tall a ngatta and Culgoa.

Our hearts becc-me leaden as our exa min ations loom s even n earer, for in spite of a year·s h ard work our kn owl edge strangely seems to h ave eva porated . while some of u s have met with unfortunate setbac ks recen tly-a mump here, a measle there, indeed, many of the ill s tha t flesh is h eir lo.

But still we forge bravely ahead , and w ork and pray. We are proud of o ur class a nd Jc.ya! to our Alm a Mate r , an d after all e xams are net everything.

SUB-INTERMEDIATES. If you w an t lo kn ow where all the powe r is in C.L.C., I'll tell you. It is Inte rmediate. I h ave never seen such with brains. There a re fifty-four of us, me introduce them to you.

Margaret Slat!ory is our captain , and an excellent one. Margare t has had her hand tied up for mos t part of the term . She w as cc·oking toffee for the fete, and tipped the p ot over herself. This ought lo teac h us a lesson . Marga ret is aided by Pauline Gough. who is one of the big brains of the class. If you ever want to know anything about maths ., gc- to Pauline. She has taken up tennis, an d w e are looking forward to seeing her play for the scho ol one d ay.

Joan Maison is our sports captain, and can always suggest a good game to play at any tick of the clock. J oan is kn own for her broad smile. and th e little bit of ha ir that falls over one eye.

Maureen Moloney sta nds by Joan . Maureen shines at sport, a nd we must congratulate her on h er performance as Pyramus in " A Midsummer Nighfs Dream."

If you want to find Maureen , look for Pat McClinchey, and Ma ureen will not be very far a w ay. She likes Pa t so much th at she canncl let h er out of her sight.

Zita CIGonan, who hails fr om Geelcng, is a very promising tennis player, and a keen studen t. We will see Zita in the school team yet, we hope!

Margaret Burns might not be very big in size, but she certainly makes up for it in chatter. Margaret won a basket of fruit and a large cake . When asked how she liked the cake, she replied she did not see it, thanks to h 2r brother, but I don 't think Margaret would let the cake get up and walk away.

Margaret a:1d Anita seem to spend their time up and down Bourke-street on the doubled ecker buses.

Dorothy Rae excels herself at Science, and is an a ll-round school girl.

Dorothy Archer is rather tall, but she certainly is good at running; if you a re standing in her way and she passes you, you think it is a willy-willy.

Norma Donovan is the bell-ringer. You often see her worrying her head off about the bell. If yo u want to know anything about farms, ask Norma? ? ?

Vera Fitzgerald has been away most part of the Third Term through sickness. but we hope she will soon be back with us again.

Noreen Kerr is a keen student, her favourite subject being Business Principles.

Vonnie Swaenan is rather quiet, but always enjcys a good joke. Vonnie loves geometry.

Pat. Excell hails from Melton South . P at. travels a long way to scho ol, but is always fresh for a long day ahead of her.

Tess Reid - Her h obby seems to be photography. Every few days she prc duces fresh snaps she h as taken.

Pat O'Sh.annessy is clever at drawin g, and is a lways busy with her pencil.

Elsie Bagnato is anoth er star, and when there is a free time Elsie is first on the courts.

Joan Russell always h and s you a good laugh by telling yo u how she comes to school in t h e early morning.

Pat McGiinchey works hard and seems to like languages. Pat is a very good sk ater, and I hear that she might rival S onja Renie. Pat will always be seen with Noreen Kerr and Maureen Maloney.

Roma O'Kane can always tell you a goo d story, and is a lways ready to help.

Both are taking a Business Course. Eileen was of great assista nce in typing copy for " Caritas."

The Picnic HE Leavings, Honours and Intermediates decided that for at least one day in the examinations the preceding week they would "let Euclid rest and Archimedes pause,'' and live one crcwded day of glorious freedom amidst the gums of Ferny Creek .

The day dawned grey and cloudy, and the rain drizzled ceaselessly, but not to be deterred by th e weather, the picnickers arrived in gay dirndles, and, hoping for the best from the weather, packed into the buses. One br ight girl thought to bring a giamophone and others brought records. The music brightened the prospe ct conside1·abl y , and the thought that even if it did keep on raining there was al ways the gramophone, was very comforting . At last the buses moved off . The fi rst bus looked very chee ry and c·plimis tic with ye ll ow and white streamers floating out of the windows.

Our destination was Ferny Creek. The roa d winding round the mountain was lovely and the view over across tree-tops was beau t ifu l,

with the m ist r ising from the mountains and now and then a patch of water showing in between th e hills. The btightness of the lov e ly colo u rful hom es w ith their sca r let, pink and mauve rhod cdendrons penetra ted the grey veil that seemed lo cover c ve rythin g. It was still drizzling when we reached the re cre a tion ground at Ferny Creek. The: outlook w as a nything but cheerful. A big ha ll loo med up in front of us, and through the rain we cc uld see tennis cou r ts and a cricket pi tch. We w e re partic ularl y looking out for this , because one optimist in the company had brought a cricket bat. The hall was opened for us and we tumbl ed out of the b u ses and into th e ha ll where lunches were immed iate ly in demand, and soon all were satisfying appetites made sharp by the bracing mountain a ir. As the rain continued, and we felt our "female feet tc-0 weak to struggle with tenacious clay," we decided to avail ourselves of the good-will of a pianist, and ·'chase the fleeting hours w ith flying feet." We certainly forgot the "weariness, the fever and the fret" of exams.

When the rain showed signs of stopping, coats were donned , and we made for the playground where the swings and see- saws were kept busy carry ing more weight than they were made for.

With an hour or so before the departure of the buses many of us set out wa lking. The road was still rather muddy in patches, but everything smelt tangy and fresh after the rain. As the Sherbrooke Falls were quite near, a lot of the girls went d own to them.

The time came all too soon for the return , and happy, tire d and m u ddy , we climbed into the buses.

The return journey passed quietly with singing and s uch, and we soon arrived back to sch ool. At th e sigh t of text books, we suffered a r ude awak ening to the thought that the exams. were only fo u r days off. But now, "with nerves new-braced and spirits cheered.' we are read y fo.r the ordeal and ou r weariness is b ut "th e pledge of cheerful days, and nights with ou t a groan."

"A Day at Tay Cireggan'' AY CREGGAN!" The name sounded rather vague, and did not hold much interest for the members of our Catholic Action Group, who had been invited to spend a Sunday there. ,,

T

We had pictured it more or less as a boarding school , where young women went to learn more about our F a ith so that they could teach it to others. How mistaken we were! This we realized from the ve ry moment we entered the tall, wide, inviting gates, until we passed through the m to go home.

Everything was quiet when we a rrived down by the Hawthorn reach of the Y arra, where Tay Creggan, a lovely old Tudor house, nestled in four acres of ground. It w as springtime, and the garden, bedecked with its floral profusion and sweep of lawns, the shrubs, the wisteria , and the long line of towering trees, which guard the boundaries, all appeared to stretch out arms of welcome to us.

We went up the drive , admiring and astonished at all, and were greeted by a friendly bark from Sir G alahad. A ve ry attractive "Questor" attired in a gay floral dirndle and armed with a flow er basket and garden scissors then aprcached us.

We w ere impressed by her easy manner of approach and h er commanding p ersonality, and w e were secretly ashamed of the beliefs we had held regarding these "Questers." We ha:! pictured them as prudes, with eyes for ever raised alcft. but we were quickly disilusioned when we met a band of gay, laughing, merry-eyed young girls, aged from sixteen to tw:mty;;ix .

We assembled on the lawn and sat on rugs under brightly coloured sun umbrdlas, and m et many girls of Catholic Action Groups from other schools.

An atmosphere of cheerfulness and good-will pervaded the whole. Everyone wholeh eartedly joined in the community singing, and even a few weeks later the delightful strains of "The Itzy-witzy Spider" we heard in the Leaving Pass room. Rosemary, one of the "Questors," delivered a very interesting address on Catholic Action in general, and told us how we can introduce it into every day of our lives, so that our every action will be a "Catholic Action."

After lunch we made for the croquet lawn, where we learnt some folk dances, one of which was "The Seven Steps." We all then entered into a treasure hunt. There were twelve different groups, searching for a treasure, representing a virtue, which that group should try to acquire. This game was so novel and so unexpected that we e njoyed ourselves in a way we had never be for e experienced.

One of the "Questors" showed us over the mellow red brick pile, a nd the additions, recently completed, which comprised dormitories, a dining room and a meeting rooom.

The older building was by far th e more beautiful, antiquity had lent it an ine xplicable charm. In this delightful house th e door to each room bore a heraldic device, on which was given the name by which the room is known; the kitchen is "The Good Samaritan" ; the ballroom, "The Joy of the Lord"; the drawing room, "The Pearl of Great Price"; and the dormitories are known by the names of the Apostles . The walls, bed-spreads and hangings of the dormitories are in pastel shadings.

After an enlightening talk by Elizabeth, who told us about the work of the Grail, the "Questers" changed from their dirndle3 into their Tudor frocks, made of velvet with a fitting bodice and bouffant skirt of Tudor times, quite in keeping with the old English house. The array of different colours evidenced the varied personalities, which make up the movement. Our enjoyable day was fast coming to an end, and from praising and admiring the house and garden, we went to praise and adore the Great Giver of all the objects of our admiration.

The fifteen minutes of adoration and thanksgiving were followed by a short speech from Dr. Mannix, who said that in these days, all industry, all art, all professions, all occupations , merge into the making of one huge pie, and we all have a finger in it . He then told us of the responsibility, as well as the privileges, that this freedom has given to us .

Ann ual Com mem orat ion Day at C~L~C~ HE ann ua l Mass for the repose of the souls of deceased teachers and pupils of the College was attended by a large number of ex-pupils on Sunday, Novembe r 10th. Right Rev . P. Lyons, D.D., Adminis trator of St. Patrick's Cathedral , celebrated Holy Mass, a nd, in a short sermon, r eminded the old collegians of their obligation s as past pupils of the Catholic Ladies' College. Louise Lightfoot is still in India a nd is artistic director of Ram Gopal's Company which hopes scme day to tour Australia. She has been north near the Himalayas. but after a while found the snow and the pine-trees and the g-reat silence too overwhelming. She longs too fc-r a taste of Australian mutton after the prolonged Indian fare! She found Bombay much changed in a few years, and amazingly grown-due mainly to the influx of wealthy European refugees. Now s h e is enjoying the lovely hill a ir of Banga lore . We hope to see Louie back in h er native clime soo n.
