They have been solendid years , with th e bles sing of God obviously uoon them . Years of hard work on th e p8rt oi all assoc iated with the college, ye ars of se lf -sacrificing labour supported by a trem end o us spi rit of loya lt y, thai C.L .C. spi rit whic h the new girls are told abou t each yea r, and wh ich one seios th em slowly but ve ry sure ly acqu iring as th e months go by .

Th ere have been many joys and many diiticuiti es d uring this time , almost three-qua rter s oi a ce ntury. The year 1904 saw the Second Australasian Catholic Congres s assembled in Melbourne , and also marked the Golden Jubilee of the Immaculate Conception .

The College was intimately associated with both events.

2nd November, 1904 An entertainment was held in the College Hall in honour of the hierarchy and clergy attending the Congress . It was honoured by the presence of the late Cardinal Archbishop of Sydney (His Eminence

Cardinal Moran) . the late Archb ishop of Melbourne (the Most Rev. Dr. Carr) and a distinguished gathering of cl ergy . The pupils presented a sacred cantata. " Fidei Victori ae ;n Au stralasia" (To the Faith of Victoria in Au stralia) . an original composition by a member of the Order (S .M. Benedicta Martin and S. M. Alpho[)se Daly} . By special request this was repeat ed on the following night to a large audience .

The oralorio " Immaculate " was the medium chosen by the Si sters of Charity to honour the occasion .

Both script and music were composed by members of the Order (S .M. Benedicta Martin , S.M. Alphonse Dal y). Following the oratorio the pupil s sang Pontifical High Mass in Greg orian chant with an original ofiertory piece. " O Maria sine labe originali con cepta " .

College, on the Eastern Hill , on Friday of last week, when Lady Gibson-Carmichael invested three Stu dents of Honour and distributed prizes to a number of successful students at recent public examinations, had a good opportunity to see the scope and effect of the combined secular and religious training given by the Sisters of Charity, and other communities of The results for which prizes nuns, in this State. were given were a convenient index to the curriculum of the co ll ege. They were not prizes given arbitrarily by the conduclors of the establishment for work done there, but rewards for work sealed with the approval of the Unive rsi ty examiners ."

1923-27 Some Memories of CL.C. of the 1920's as they occurred to Eile en Costigan.

Mention of the idea of a "Ca rita s" to cover the lifespan of C.L.C. has set my thoughts straying through th e years from 1923 to 1927. What varied ideas pass throug h my mind - of rooms, of teachers , of girls , of happenings!

First of all, in early 1923 the gathering of new pupils in Mi ss McCaifery's room for a so rting out-then , wit h ;ibout 30 others into the end downstairs ln:ermediate room, Intermediate C. under Sister M. Isabel. Who were the girls? Some names come easilySh eila Johnson from Koo-wee-rup, Mollie Culhane , Mellie Kyne-not ma~ remembered as my sojourn with them was very brief, the fearful day arriving very pa.g e t en

quickly when I was ca lled from the joyful peac e of !hat room to enter the i:Jusy and exalted atmosphere of Intermedi ate A under Sister M. Bernard! And , fo r me, and for tho se others, a cataclysmic change !

Inte rm ediate A was occupied by a group of girls, most of whom had done their exam th e year before . but had not passed the requi site number of subj ects, the idea of passing a minimum at th e first sitting havi ng been er.fo rced for th e first time . Into this ve ry advanced clas s we unfortunates were thrust! We had no French , no German , yet were expected to take the sa me lesso ns as all th e others . We did, at th e cost of slogging hard work and even, I g uess, man y tears!

Who was in that room? As teachers, Sister M. Bernard for all subj ects except German, Geography and History whi ch were th e province of Mi ss Kerley , not or.ly a good teac her but kindne::s itself; as pupils , among ot hers: Mabel O'Brien, Ursula Edgar, Kath Keog h, Mari e O' Meara, Imelda Kelly, Mary Sugden , Ellie and Sheila Glavin , Eva Johnson , Mary Fl ynn , Shei la Dill on , Vera Lynch, Nell Wel sh , Sybil lkin , N ao m ~ Grey , Th ea Fo rbes-th ese three , I think, preparing fo r Pharmacy exams.

An y highlights? Sister Bernard reading us Father Boylan's " Hea rt of the School" at Engli sh period s; Marie O' Meara's romantic essays, featuring , if mP-mo ry serves, ep isodes on Ballarat Lake ; the agony of bei ng given October Te st result s . . . Reveren d Mother presiding , with all the teachers, and Sister Bernard reading each girl ' s marks with pointedly appropriate rema rks! How one squirmed!

Anita for E;igl ish, and Mi ss Rush for Maths, seemingly delighting in asking me to stand up to answer question s durin g one particular week following a misunderstanding I'd had with a horse and the ground .

By 1925 we were th e Honours Class in the small corner room downstairs . . 12 desks crammed in and tiny Si ster M. Th eophane in charg e. And now into our lives came Fraulein Mathese, grand-daugher of a French emigree from the 1789 French Revolution wh o ended up in Prussia. No matter how generous we were in allowing for a few years here and a few year s there, she could not have been any vounger than in her ei ghties , but she was "on the ball " all the iime. Her " I will see ze Reverend Mother" wa s more than enough to bring us to order, bu t we had a really hard job one day to persuade her not to carry ou ~ her oft-repeated threat. "Out o 7 th e goodness of my heart" she gave us very muc h longer lessons than were set down . She was due 10 arrive for a lesson to begin after morning recess, and to leave an hour later. But she arrived , genere. lly, ju st as lhe exit be11 · rang and often did not leave till 12.30 . We developed the " very ladylike " practice of one of us meeting her at the gate and

kee ping her talking and moving very slowly toward s th e room , where , meanwhi ie, someone put the clock or· ten minutes or so. On e day, a second someone ac vance a the cloc k still further , so that sh e bustled ofi at an apparent 12.30, and we had a fine game of tenni s. Next lime sh e came , she was really angry .

How , sh e a s ~ed , c ould she leave us at 12.30 and be at the Town Hall at midday? She would see th e Reverend Mother! That took a very great deal of smoo thing over to prevent such a calamity!

Just a few other thoughts of this really excellent te acher and great "character" . No English was permitted e.tter th e firs t few weeks except when the lesson explicitly demanded it. My German ability was completely negative , and my ability to look intelligent equally so. Hence one day, as I sat secure in my ignorance in the back seat , a question was fired at me in German. Compl etely unable to make head or tail of it , I worked that " Ja" migh t be the " most in telligent " answer. So away I " ja " -ed onl y to stir a hornet's nest. Girl s were being moved , a seat in th e front row right und er her nose was vacated, and I was being urged , in English , to come sit there , poor th ing 1 Kath Hawkins and Mary Rooney, second year Honours students , were laughing th eir heads off, as were some of th e more knowledgable of the others .

And what wa s ii all about? I'd been asked whether I was deaf, and had said " yes " ! She never forgot ,

ar.d from then on I was frequently asked what I'd done about my deafness. Actually the only English she used was to rell us what lazy girls we were. Her idea of homework was conditioned by the true Prussian-Junker-rr. ilitarist ideal of hard work and plenty of it. "Yours not to reason why, but to do all the homework I set. " Even then, after our having slaved hour aiter hour at this work, she'd frequently come to the door and throw it at us with , "Take your filthy verks! You are lazy baggers" , this word often sounding remarkably like another somewhat similar one!

But when the exams were upon us, many an extra unpaid hour she worked with us in her room at Oxford Chambers, always finishing up with a little party.

Somehow one seni her a card and a note at Christmas time each year-and I have here beside me as I write a le'cte r from her from Lister House private hospital where she had been a patient for over two years , thanking me "for never forgetting ". Truly, how could one forget so excellent a teacher and fascinating a personality! And one so wholeheartedly " for" her C.L.C. girls that she'd refuse to coach any likely competitor!

Bci.ck to that 1ittle Honours room and Sister Theophane busily expounding Victor Hugo and French symbolism to our philistine ears. Yet we absorbed so much from her of French literature , and we even found ourselves debating aspects of Sheahan's Apologetics with, I think, a Newman Jesuit as adjudicator! And still we r,ad time for fun and games. I remember Rose Chamley, constitutionally unable to bG in time for school, but be ing enabled to crawl into the room to her place strategically placed on the end of the front--row to which the opened door reached, so small was the room.

1926 and a much larger class , so upstairs this year ;o the form er Leaving room , with much sliding of banisters, so very unlad ylike! Sister Theophane must have almost despaired , at time s, of our ever growing up to be " ladies ". Thank God I was able to be at her Msss at Caritas Christi when her soul had gone to God. Perhaps one more teacher could be mentioned Sister M. Aquin , Mis s Jamieson that was , who led us to th e heights of English and British History in that final year, a fine teacher, and a pleasing and in teresting personality.

Briefly to other matters concerts , with Sister M. Bernard 's " Just move your lips but don't let any noise come outl " for my sort of " noise" would surel y have spoilt th e four-part rendering of " Snow" and " Blackbirds " ; and Miss Eugenie Duggan with her artistic dress arrangements; and later, Miss Eileen O' Keefe , forever chewing dried fruits, " so good for one's voice muscl es" , and her verse-speaking. In my memory "The Lake Isle of lnnisfree " is forever linked to verse-speaking . Then there were the monthly trips to the Cathedral for Confession followed by extremely long penitential exercises of altar-visiting; talks by Mother Francis often on the theme of "the gilded lil y"; sport in confined space; balls over the fence from Scotch; dances with St. Pat's boys as partners . . . all the se ar.d more memories come crowding into my mind when I really start thinking of C.L.C. , 1!=123-1926.

Bourke S.J., Rector of St Patrick's College. extracts: " One of the most striking characteristics in the School annal s of this country is the growth of secondary education ; and 1t wcs in accordance with this deve lopment tfiat it wa s dec ided, a quarter of a century ago, that High School facilities for our girls be made more poss ible by the foundation of the Catholic ladies' Colleg e. The aim was to increase in number and strength that body of ed ucated gentlewomen who were adding lustre io the prestige of the Church in Victoria.

Twenty-five years ago a definite aim in education was not nearly so universal as it is today , when almost every girl looks forward to a career, and 'Vocational Training ' is so important .

Many of our senior girls are ambitiou s for professions which are to be achieved only by way of the Universitv; therefore, the exam ination finds a place in our scheme of ' Moiivat1on ', for it involves industry, selfcontrol and strong, reso lute will.

Two Senior Government Scholarships , two University Exhibitions , four Newman Scholarships , and seven Free Places

have been secured by the students of the Honour Cla ss , and 1n the class lists for Leaving Certificate Hcno urs they won forty-two places . . Meanwhile , th e Midc! le School carried off three Junior Govern ment Scholarships , which lead to the portals of the University. At the University Conservatorium of Music one hundred and thirty-one passes were obtained , seventy-seven in the Practical Division and fifty-four in the Theorel1cal. Thes e include twenty-two Honours and thirty-s ix Credits , with First Place in the State in Harmony and Count erpoint (Grade I) , three Credits (Grade I Practical) , three Credits and three Passes in Grade II . In addition , five students qualified for th e A.L.C.M . and two secured the Intermediate Certi fi cate of the London College with Honours. The one student presented fo r the Trinity College examination gained Honours in the Senior Divi sion ."

Dr. Manni x was the patron of the school and I remember him sitting in the front of the stage. The se days were the focal points of the whole yea r. I forgot to say that the school c loaks were of white satin, lined with go ld and very lovely.

On the first Thursday of each month , we all went across to the Cathedral to Confession and again on th e first Friday for Ben ediction . This we shared with th e girls from Academy and boys from St. Patri ck' s and Parade. . . As far as I can remember , ou r Sports Days we re held in th e college grounds with afternoon tea ssrved to th e mothers afterwards . We also had our Fetes in th e g rou nd s at th e end of the yea r. Mi ss Rus h always look ed after the cake stal l and we would not dare forget to each bring a decorated sponoe as a donation.

There are so many littl e things to remember-Sister St . John looking after the grotto when it was down by th e back fenc e. We were sure she had goldfish in the small pool. Then there was old Pete r, th e gardener. who always raised his hat to us ."

It is the ever-recurring tributes pciid to th e musical talent of the pupil s, manifested at speech days and on other special occasions . . . .

And as we look back on th ese achievements , we naturally ask who it wa s who offered to God these products of genius. It was one who has now passed to her reward and whose gifts are now crowned in etern ity-S. M. Alph onse Dal y, who labou red with Moth er M. Lau ren ce 1n the ea rly years of th e College .

In later years she was again associated with the College - th is time as Mother Rectress - and , in spite of ill health , she achieved much . During that pe riod great enc.Jurageme nt was given to original work by th e pu pil s in mu sic and literature , and records show that so me of the greatest scholast ic successes we re achieved at that time. "

We offer Feast Day greetings to Mother Rectre ss (Mother M. Virgilius) . This was a sad occasion for us all fo r we know that Mother Rectress will not be at C.L.C. on her next Feast Day.

1941 17th March, 1941 C.L.C. took part in the St. Patrick's Night Concert at the Melbo11rne Town Hall. The Pageant was pronounced a great success and we acquitied ourselves ri gh t honourab:y.

20th June, 1941 Fea st of the Sacred Heart. Exposition in the Convent Chapel. We were given the privilege of watching in turn before the Blessed Sacrament. In the afternoon Fat her Moran co n ~ ecrated us all to the Sacred Heart.

20th August, 1941 Wedn esday. Physical Culture Display and Sports Day -we had grand weather and grand sports.

26th October, 1941 The Feast of Christ the King saw the inauguration of Au st ralia 's Catholic Youth Rally. In spite of inclement weather, the crowd present thoroughly enjoyed the gflmes and singing , and none more than ourselves .

Th e expe rim ent was taken up with such ene rgy by al i conc ern ed that th e bishop gave it th e sta tus of a Movement , with hi s Grace , th e Archbishop of Adela ide, as its Ecc lesiasti ca l Chairman .

And where does C.L.C. stand in all this activity? Th e Catholic La dres ' Co ll ege was one of the fi rst schoo ls asked to experiment with th is new form of Catholic Action . C.L.C. members of the Y.C. S. rep rese nted the sc hool at the in3ug uration of the movement, and posters made by the members of the groups demonstrated how full of zeal were the C. L.C . propagandi sts of Catholic Action in the School .

A succ ess ful general meeting wa s held in the Seco nd Te rm.

C. L.C. has three activity groups-or Talent Groups as we of C.L.C. prefer to call th em-a Poster and Propaganda , a Mi ss ions , and a Lite rature and Soc ial Group .

1944 25th April, 1944 Th e new tuck shop was opened and it caused great excitement thro ug hout the school. It is a wonderful success, and we all wish to congratulate Sister M. Catherin e, whose patience has made it possible .

May Our first se 11iors' dance was he ld this year in the Victoria Coffee Palace after the term tests . It was a pl easant an d most enjoyable function .

June Miss Julia Flynn came to examine the work done in the sc hool and gave a very favourable report. (Some years later a C.L.C. girl - Gina Nicoletti - won the prize which honoured Ju lia Flynn ' s name.)

Fires appeared in most of the classrooms as the winter becam e more severe .

20th February, 1956 School resumed after the Christmas vacation , and we welcomed our new Mother Rectress , Mother Joannes , and the new pupils . Mother is well known to lhe old pupils as she has taught at lhe College for man y years.

27th February, 1956 College Prefects and Class Captains were announced today at the Cathedral Hall . Then followed the traditional impromptu concert. After the concert, Gina Nicoletti was presenied with a prize for her outstand ing Matriculation resul ts. Gina obtained the .Ju li a Fl yn n Memorial Pri ze, the C.L.C. Newman Scho lars hip , a Senior Government Scholarship, a General Exhibition, a Commonwealth Scholarship, :he Dante Alighieri Prize ; first class honours in Italian , Chemistry and French ; second class honours in Engli sh Literature; and a pass in Physics and English Exp ress ion .

Monday, 22nd July, 1963 This day was a school day with a difference . The object of the day was to bring th e beauty and dignity or the religious voc ation into a clearer light, and judging by reports which were received afterwards , Vocation Day was really successful.

Sunday, 28th July, 1963 We were capably represented today on " Parliament of Youth " for the first time . The debaters were Anna Moloney, Margaret Moran, and Rosemary Buckley , with a selected group of Matrics as back-benchers .

Friday, 1st April, 1966 House Meelings held al lunch-time to discuss the swimming sports - many confused ideas. Games Night organised by the Fathers' Association.

Friday, 22nd April, 1966 The first Swimming Sports held at the Richmond Baths tonight.

Monday, 25th April, 1966 Many parents and friends attend Mass offered in the hali for servicemen of World Wars I and II. The War Memorial plaque erected in the hall last week was blessed. Thanks to the St. Pat's cadets who helped to make this Mass so impressive .

Saturday, 30th April, 1966 Some ot the girls spent the whole day painting the Lunchroom ceiling . Many old shower-caps , scarves and shoes seen. Thanks for the scones, Sister!

Monday, 3rd June, 1968 Thi s morning at Assembly Diane Manwaring who won the C.L.C. Newman Scholarship in 1964 and has specialized in Far Eastern studies at the Universtiy, gave us an interesting account of her recent trip to China. The talk was illustrated by slides.

Friday, 14th June, 1968 Rosemary Wilkinson , another illustrious ex-student , spoke to the Matrics today about the rewarding career of occupational therapy Tuesday, 18th June, 1968 C.L.C. was represented in " It 's Academic " by three Intermediates who showed their genius (a typical feature of C.L.C. students) by winning the first heat.

" I am sure you will be as pleased to learn as we are to inform you, that after many months of discussion, initiated at the suggestion of Hi s Grace, the Archb ishop, C.L.C. is to continue in a new area .

That area is Eltham where we have acquired a site in Diamond Street about a quarter of a mile from the ra ilway station . The college will continue at East Melbourn e until December, 1970, and will transfer to Eltham in Feb ruary, 1971 ."

Tuesday, 25th February, 1969 Yesterday we were dismissed a: 3.05 in order to prepare for Speech Night. Today we were allowed ' Iii ! til e second period to arrive in order to " get over" Srieech Night. The generally held opinion was that the concert part of the night was short , sweet and very good .
