Until the re-appearance of this important group there were less than 30 drawings known by the artist most of which are held in public collections such as the British Museum, the Royal Collection and the Yale Center for British Art.
The collection adds greatly to our understanding of the thought processes and working techniques of one of Britain’s finest artists of the 18th Century. The group also throws light on his relationship with Claude Martin, one of colonial India’s most interesting and colourful characters.
