Over 700 shooters from half the states in the country proved the reason for Missouri’s nickname of the “Show-Me State” when they gathered at the Missouri Trapshooters’ Association (MTA) near Linn Creek for the annual state shoot. Not only did the young guns show everyone how it’s done, “more experienced” shooters, Lynn Gipson, Nels Hanson, Donald Chrapla and John Wiegard all celebrated milestones of registering hundreds of thousands of targets. James Kent Frost achieved the ultimate in milestones and received Grand Slam recognition.
Missouri has traditionally been one of the first in the midwest to hold a state tournament in a new target year. Shooters began arriving, many with campers in tow, to be in place for May 16, the first day which dawned bright and beautiful following afternoon storms on the previous day. By Sunday, May 22, the championship Doubles and Handicap events brought the competition to a close and decided the High Over All and High All Around trophy winners.
MTA Board member John Farrell sponsored all three of Monday’s events. All Singles and Doubles events were decided by carryover through the week. In the Singles, Missourian Steven Charles eventually prevailed over Glen Lonneman (MN) and TJ Main (WA) after all broke 99s in the initial event.
Four shooters posted 94s in the Handicap. Joe Vernon and Stephen Loxterman answered the shoot-off call. After one round, Vernon was champion and Loxterman was declared Sub Junior champ. Spencer Scotten elected to take the yardage trophy and Marvin Beumer was named Sub Veteran champ.
The final event of the day was the Doubles and TJ Main (WA) carded a 96 to win the Class AAA honors. Glen Lonneman returned to the trophy table with a score of 96 for Class AA. In Class A, Rick Fuller and Marvin Beumer carried over their scores of 95 before Fuller was determined to be Class A champ.
Preliminary trophies were open to shooters from in or out of state. In the Event 4 Singles, Kansas resident Bruce Davis and Kentucky shooter Jack Futch both ran a perfect score
to win AAA and Senior Veteran respectively. Other trophies went home to Minnesota with Glen Lonneman (AA/99), Wisconsin with Brent Heikkinen (A/97), Ohio with John Javersak (B/97), Illinois with Larry Brown (C/97) and Frank Payne (Veteran/98) and Arkansas with Chet Orick (Junior/99).
In Event 5, TJ Main (WA) tied with Zach Bryant (NE) when both posted 98s in the Handicap. Main was declared champion while Bryant was awarded the long yardage award. Paul Jacobs (SD) won mid yardage with 96 and Emma Grace Mathews (TN) was top lady with 92.
After six carryover events, cards were cut to decide the Event 6 Doubles. TJ Main prevailed over Bruce Davis for AAA honors with
LYNN GIPSONscores of 96. Missouri young gun Kelan Kinion bested all other scores with his 99 in Class AA. Shelly Heitner (IA) was high lady with 97. William Van Nieuwenhuyzen (SD/93) won the carryover for Senior Veteran.
On Wednesday, HOA races began and All-American points were awarded. In Event 7, Missouri resident Marvin Beumer turned in the lone 100 straight to win Sub Veteran.
Non-Residents TJ Main won the carryover with John White IV (AL), both with 100s.
JOHN FARRELLMissouri resident Kent Frost showed his Handicap prowess in Event 8 by never leaving behind an unbroken target. It was his first perfecto from the 27 yard line and was the last leg for his Grand Slam. His was the only perfect score of the event. Shoot-offs decided the in-state Junior and Sub Veteran trophies. Andrew Herbig outshot Ian Kutilek, who was defending his title from the previous year, in one round. Marvin Beumer only needed one round of extras to take the Sub Veteran title over Michael White and David Deitch. James Burma was the Non-Resident champion with 97.
Top scores of 99 in Event 9 came from out-of-state AAA champ Eric Munson and Veteran winner Frank Haynes. In state, AAA Zach Nannini and Class A champ Michael Brown each broke 97. Junior Gold winner Ryan Loveless and Sub Veteran champ David Wommack each carded 96.
The Singles Class Championship event was sponsored by Hart Systems Machining and Automation Inc. In addition, $6000 in added
Lewis money for HAA winners was provided by Hart. Stormy weather delayed the event and caused the program’s 200 targets to be reduced to 100. In state, four perfect centuries awarded trophies to David Hull (AAA), Sierra Taylor (Sub Junior), Jordan Ziercher (Junior) and Gary Gooch (Senior Veteran).
Sponsored by Gipson Rickets Lead Reclamation, this Handicap was held in honor and memory of the MTA’s founder “Uncle Bill” Fienup. An avid shooter with a Missouri state Singles title won in 1946 and a state Doubles title won in1947, he established the permanent home grounds in 1968. Since that time the Missouri State Shoot and the Fall Handicap have grown into nationally recognized tournaments. In addition, Fienup created the Foundation for the Junior Trapshooters of Missouri, which has introduced thousands of youth shooters to the sport. The Foundation continues to be supported by the Fienup family.
It’s only appropriate that a young lady named Bailey Lueders was at the top of the scoreboard for Missouri entries, posting the lone
99. Runner-up was Junior Gold Wyatt Newby with 95. Sixteen yearold Anna Rawe won the Lady I trophy with 97. Non-Resident Kevin Nelson (IA) carded a 99 for the out of state championship trophy.
Following the program, a complimentary hot dog roast was provided by Bob Schultz Target Shotguns and the MTA. Later, the much-anticipated Bob Graf’s Pump ‘Em Doubles Shoot was once again held on Thursday evening. Featuring “experienced” pump guns, shooters competed for trophy shells, donated by Graf & Sons. This year’s winners were champion Jordan Ziercher (two flats), Justin Cavett second and Riley Bellomy third (each received one flat).
Missouri residents Habe Darr (AA), Curtis Biggerstaff (B), Jace Dowd (Sub Junior), Hunter Spruill (Junior Gold) and Steven Fuller (Veteran) all picked up championship hardware after breaking perfect scores.
Out of state 100 straights included TJ Main, who outlasted Keith Ditto, Bruce Davis, and Kya
Funkhouser in carryover for AAA. Brent Heikkinen (AA), Jack Murphy (A), Payton Detavernier (Lady I) and Mitchell Germany (Junior Gold) were outright winners.
400 boxes of new shells, donated by Graf & Sons, drew the largest number of entries for any of the state shoot Handicap events, with a total of 407 shooters. In and out of state winners from champion through fourth plus yardage groups and category winners improved their ammo supply.
Missouri Sub Junior Cole Harlan took away 40 boxes in addition to the in-state champ’s trophy with his 99. Runner-up Michael Garavaglia was awarded a trophy and 30 boxes for his 98. Kentucky resident Keith Ditto (champ) went to the shoot-off field with Dagen Voigtman (Junior Gold), both having posted 99s.
Dean Neumann (MN) turned in the solitary 100 in the Fred Naugles Memorial Doubles.
Zach Nannini broke the top score (99) among Missouri shooters
for Class AAA. Also with 99s, Keith Ditto won Class AAA and Dagen Voigtman was the Junior Gold champ. The event was sponsored by Stanley and Betty Harris, long time shooting sports supporters.
Following the day’s shooting, the Missouri state meeting was held in the clubhouse. Elections of officers were held and state teams were recognized, followed by the Hall of Fame induction of Tom Edlin. From 1963-1992, Edlin garnered many Grand American, Satellite Grand, State and Zone championships. An unofficial record of note, of all the MTA HOF induction gatherings, his family represented the largest crowd to attend!
Devoted MTA supporter, Tom Endres sponsored the Missouri Championship Singles, named in honor of long time MTA Director, Bob Burg. 443 entries made it the largest event of the week, but in-state, only three ran the 200 program targets. Patrick Hopson became champion after a two round shoot-off with Zach Nannini (RU) and Todd Albers (A). Non-

Zach Nannini won the W.F. J. Fienup Trophy as the high Missouri shooter from Events 9 and 10.
Jordan Ziercher won the Ray Fienup Trophy as the high Missouri Junior shooter from events 9 and 10.
In Event 11, the open Senior Veteran money clip, donated by Karla Harrison in memory of her dad, George Herron (a 20-year MTA Director/past MTA president) was won by Randy Cook.
The David Dove Memorial Youth Fund awards an MTA Life Membership to the top Junior and Sub Junior shooting the championship Doubles. This year’s memberships went to Stephen Loxterman and Austin Stoner. n
The water tower stood resolute over the World Shooting and Recreational Complex (WSRC) near Sparta, IL, as competitors from 23 states arrived for the U.S. Open June 1-5. Almost 600 (up 18% overall from last year) ATA shooters were classified before they took to the line in over a dozen events to exercise their rights to enjoy the sport of trapshooting.
Dark, overcast skies didn’t dampen the scores on opening day in the Singles event presented by Promatic. Indiana resident Jessiah Watts left no target unbroken for the champion’s trophy. Also posting scores of 100 were Justin Dewitt (AAA champ), Kurt Pierce (Sub Veteran champ) and Billy Cook (Senior Veteran champ).
Junior shooter Bryce Helle (IL) tangled with Trey Wilburn in the Little Egypt Handicap. When the dust settled after a shootoff between the two top scores of 98, the 17 year-old Helle was awarded his first ever Handicap trophy and Wilburn was runner-up.
Trey Wilburn returned for the last event of the preliminary day to post the lone 100 in the Graf & Sons Doubles. Zach Nannini was just one bird behind the champion to claim Class AAA. Also winning with scores of 99 were Lauren Dunn (Lady I), Cole Henning (Junior) and Jerry Osborne (Junior Gold).
Perfect centuries dotted the
scoreboard in the Trap & Field Singles after 220 squads cleared the line. Zach Nannini prevailed as champion after carryover with Keith Ditto, who fell back to Class AAA champ. Brooke Barnett (TN) picked
BRYCE HELLEup the Lady I award with her 100 straight. Drake Reynolds (KY) claimed the Sub Junior trophy with his 100 straight. Age and experience paid off, Sub Veteran Mick Friedel (IA), Veteran Steve
Brokaw (IL), and Senior Veteran Scott Norris (IL) swept their respective categories, all with perfect scores.
In the Trapshooting Hall of Fame Handicap, trophies were awarded to champion through fifth place and to categories. Taking top honors over the field of 220 squads was Fulton Manning (KY) with 97. Runner-up and third went to Trey Wilburn and Keith Ditto respectively. Jessiah Watts and Scott Strack both posted 95 to place fourth and fifth respectively.
Thursday’s Doubles, sponsored by the Red Bud Chamber of Commerce, put the championship trophy in the hands of Austin Jacob (OH) with his score of 99. After carryovers were decided, Zach Nannini was Class AAA champ and
Reid Winn busted 98 twin birds to capture Class AA. Also posting a 98, Raylee Bishop was Lady I top shot. Hunter Block’s 98 earned him the Junior Gold honor. Frank Haynes added to his first of several trophies for the tournament when his 98 was a winning score in the Veteran’s category.
Familiar names topped the Class Singles trophy list. In Class AAA, Zach Nannini (champ) and Keith Ditto (runner-up) carried over with 100s to eventually decide the winning order. Bradley Gray (champ) and Reid Winn (runner-up) sifted out their order in Class AA with scores of 100. It took a perfect score to claim a Sub Junior, Junior, and Junior Gold trophy. Drake Reynolds earned the Sub Junior champion’s honor while Dausen Hemker took runner-up in that category. Heath Whitney was the decided Junior champ leaving runner-up honors to Caleb Delp. After carryovers, Dagen Voigtman was the Junior Gold winner and Caleb Clayton was runner-up. Dagen Voigtman out shot the field in Friday’s Fiocchi Preliminary Handicap, taking the event champion with 98. Runner-up Seth Ladd, third Trey Wilburn and fourth Johnny Picone all downed 95 birds.

Heath Whitney was fifth with a 94. Junior champ Bryce Helle, of Hamel, Illinois, picked up his second ever Handicap trophy (his first came two days earlier) after shooting a 97. Joe Nehrt (97) didn’t have far to take his Senior Veteran trophy home, living just a few miles from Sparta in Chester, Illinois.
On Friday afternoon, complimentary ice cream treats were handed out in the Fiocchi vendor building.
The Class Doubles Championship rounded out the program on Friday and Keith Ditto bested all scores with his singular 100. Close on his heels (which is an accomplishment since Keith is a runner when he isn’t shooting) were five scores of 99. Jerry Osborne III was the Junior Gold champ, Kelan Kinion was Junior Gold runner-up, David Deitch took Sub Veteran champ and Don Budd finished as the Sub Veteran runnerup. Brian Hezel won the Veteran trophy. The unexpected increase in attendance warranted switching some practice traps to program traps beginning on Friday.
Saturday dawned sunny and warm to greet not only U.S. Open competitors, but also 250 Southern Illinois Youth Shooting Sports Association (SIYSSA) shooters, competing in the finale of their 2022 season. Coaches and parents set up on the east side trapline of the complex for their Singles tournament. The majority of the young guns shot the Singles on Saturday, while a smaller number returned on Sunday for Handicap and Doubles events.
SIYSSA organizes competitors into slightly different groups than ATA although all SIYSSA members are also ATA members. The event
champions were Garin Winemiller (199) and Jayce Wellen (197). Both are members of the Fox Fire team coming from Hamilton County, Illinois.
Top Team was the Fox Fire Varsity Squad with a combined score of 977/1000. Members included Isaiah Bassinger, Jayce Wellen, Keefer Steele, C.J. Davis and Ricky Webb.
Class champions were Braxton Dent (A/198), Jace Cross (B/197), Chance Graves (C/196) and Tanner Baily (D/193). Pre-sub class was won by Addie Wottowa (192).
Junior-Gold was won by Cole Gordon (198). The SIYSSA Handicap champion was Brayden Hahn (97). The Doubles champion was Tyler Gordon (98).
Meanwhile, in front of the vendor buildings on the west end of the trapline, 143 squads worked their way through 200 program targets. Three perfect scores were posted by day’s end. Zach Nannini, Keith Ditto and Mike Westjohn returned to the a field in front of the grandstands for shootoffs. Nannini won the champion’s trophy, as Ditto dropped to the event runner-up. Westjohn settled for the Senior Veteran champion’s award.
Sub Junior Mason Bartlow won
his first ever shoot-off to take home his category champion’s trophy after breaking 198 in the program. Hanna Martin and Lauren Dunn, both with the scores of 198, shot extra rounds to decide the Lady I title. Martin earned the champion’s crown while Dunn was runner-up. Missouri gunner, Wyatt Newby set the pace in the Midwest Gunstocks Handicap. His score of 98 took the champion’s award uncontested. Zach Bryant (NE) was event runner-up with 97. Also posting 97s were Junior Gold champ Hunter Spruill (MO) and Senior Veteran champ Gene Schneck (IN).
Following the program shooting, the ATA offered complimentary Butcher Block food and drinks behind the grandstands.
After all the chips fell, only three shooters went to the grandstand arena with perfect scores. Frank Haynes, Keith Ditto and Dagen Voigtman went head-to-head for the Doubles championship honors while a squad of 99s also took a field to decide placements and categories. Ditto succeeded in

The U.S. Open offered an AllAmerican competition factor of 4 in Events 2 through 13. Over 300 ATA trophies were awarded. A small number of vendors, within the permanent buildings conducted business while preparing for the upcoming AIM and Grand American tournaments. The most notable absence was the shellhouse but plans were moving forward for a full complement of returning vendors plus some new faces to be set up for the Grand. The Hall of Fame Museum welcomed visitors as it always does during ATA competitions at the WSRC. In the area, new restaurants have replaced some old favorites and are eager to host the dining needs of all competitors. n
As I was traveling along in my car getting closer to the 132nd annual trap shoot held at the Kansas Trapshooting Association home grounds on highway I-335 from Wisconsin, I was enjoying the stunning view. Stunning, as you can see for miles, or I would say, forever in the Flint Hills area that crosses east central Kansas from near the Nebraska border extending south into the Osage Hills of Oklahoma. Flint Hills gets its name for the layers of limestone and shale that lay on the ground. Having the view of cattle and endless rolling hills makes the trip across the flat lands to the shooting grounds worth the drive.
Taylor, who has been KTA President since 2004 and ATA Delegate, David Rhodes, laid the first and second fields out, then with the direction of Louie Bateman the rest of the 18 plus two practice fields the new trap houses were completed. This meant new trap houses and new Pat-traps for each house.

The Kansas trap shoot, held at the Kansas Trapshooting Association home grounds in Sedgwick, Kansas has a bit of history with the trap line being torn out in 2004. My conversation with David Rhodes gave me a little history of why the fields look so perfect in alignment. According to David all of the trap houses were moved 10 to 15 yards to the north. Before the trap line was moved shooters had to stand on wooden pallets when the rains flooded the concrete trap line. Rob
the on club house bulletin board was a memorial reading for Richard Diehl who had passed away a few days before in his home on May 3rd. Richard loved to hunt, fish, trapshoot and organize various shoots including the Lone Tree Gun Club’s Eastern Kansas Youth Trap Shoot. Richard won the 2021 KTA Singles championship with a perfect score of 200.
There were four 100s shot by Monty Montgomery, Chet Orick, Wren Washburn and Tyler Uhri in this Singles celebration.
Jaryt Hess Handicap sponsored by Sedlacek Salvage turned out to have 133 shooters with 97 being the high score for Rob Taylor who won Veteran. Max Wineinger was the Junior with a 96.
Caleb Fisher Doubles Sponsored by Shawnee Woodwork Jim Kuhn had three almost perfect scores of 99 that were shot. Rob Taylor took Veteran, Troy Haverly, Sub Veteran and Jayden Dalton Junior.
At the end of the shooting day a shoot-out sponsored by White Flyer was held in front of the club house.
Qualifying entrants must have shot in two out of the three events held on Tuesday. Numbers were drawn matching a shooter’s ending score number, then ten lucky shooters’ names were called off in anticipation to win cold hard cash. The surviving last five shooters were the five winners. White Flyer’s Nick Arnold, sales manager, was watching quietly on the side lines getting ready to hand out five cash awards. Mike Hathaway, was the only shooter to hit all ten targets out of the 10 original shooters.
Event 6, the Hall of Fame Doubles, sponsored by Fischer’s Irrigation, was the start of the High Over All events. Bruce Davis, Caleb Fischer AAA winner and Jeremy Hess B had
the highs of 95’s for in-state. Out of state 99’s for high shooters, Zachari Nannini AAA winner, Clinton Phipps A and Jack Knaus Junior Gold.
Hall of Fame Handicap was sponsored by Indiana Gun Club and had 238 shooters competing for the champion score. The shooter with the only 96 for the high score of the day was Jason Dinkel, champion at 23.5 yards. The winds made it challenging for all of the shooters. Non-Resident Tom Rombach, had the lone 95 at the 25.5 yard line for Senior Veteran champion.
The 301 shooters were delayed due to lightning for about an hour. But the storm ended and luckily they were able to get the two events in. Kansas State Class Singles sponsored by Jim Clark Auto Center were shot in beautiful weather. No 200s were posted by the In-State shooters, but Caleb Fischer and Patrick Farrington came close, winning AAA and AA with 199s. Non-Resident TJ Main sure did shine with 200 for the day, taking the AAA trophy. Jack Knaus and Brian Hezel also broke them all to win the Junior Gold and Veteran trophies.
At the end of the day an appreciation chicken dinner with all of the trimmings was catered by Chicken Mary’s compliments of the Taylor Companies Manhattan, KS.
Winchester sponsored the 2021 Champions Shootout following event 8. A total of 20 Lucky shooters were randomly drawn from entries in the Kansas State Class Singles. The winner was Monty Montgomery winning five flats of Winchester ammo. Monty was also one of the winners in the White Flyer Day event.
Event 10 being the Kansas State Class Doubles sponsored by Fred Smith ended up being an event with perfect calm weather conditions. Targets were very easy for the three hundred and one shooters to pick up in the robin’s egg blue color sky. In-state shooters gave it their all with the high Doubles score of 98 going to Caleb Fischer (AAA). Non-Resident Austin Jacobs, posted the lone onehundred for the day to claim the Non-Resident AAA trophy.
With 339 shooters shooting for Handicap trophies the visual of the targets had a perfect presentation coming out of the trap houses across the green grass then cream colored wheat field in the background. Mark Freeman, a Junior Gold shooter, had 98 to win the championship for the day at the 20.5 yard line. The day ended up being a busy one. No Handicap shoot-offs were held because of the Hall of Fame dinner. Also, the nonregistered Event 9 KTA Hall of Fame Wolf sponsored by Rick Scheer (in memory of Dick Sheer) was held in the evening, canceled the day before due to the weather delay.
The Hall of Fame induction ceremony was held Friday evening and there were a total of five new members. The three inductees for 2020 were Ken and Nancy Bock, in the Benefactor Category and Patrick Farrington, in the Shooter Category. Inductees for 2021 were Virgil Tucker (Shooter Category) and Joby Jobson (Benefactor Category). I was able to sit down and interview Patrick Farrington on Saturday. I do want to say what a very pleasant man to talk to. I asked Patrick what brought him to start shooting ATA targets? His response to me was “ Bobby Chambers and he were traveling back from training bird dogs 35 years ago and on the way
home they stopped in at an ATA shoot and after shooting, I was hooked”. Patrick’s eyes lit up when he talked about traveling to shoots with his son Matthew who is 24 now. Also, he has an admiration for his good friend Bobby and says to me “It’s all Bobby’s fault”, meaning he would not have done many things if not for Bobby. In his calm manner he said to me that he shoots for fun, not for All-American points. His love for hunting, fishing and working on cars has been his life. Patrick takes pride in pointing out that he helped build the spray booth in Lincoln, Missouri for Fred Wenig. His MX8 Perazzi that he shoots has a Wenig stock on it, of course. In 2015 Patrick had the lone hundred straight in the Kubota Doubles. Since he retired from working in pharmaceutical manufacturing as project manager for 31 years, he has enjoyed “all the people you meet along the way”.
Saturday saw great conditions for this year’s Kansas State Singles Championship. Patrick Farrington beat Jacob Kice in the shoot-off after the two locked horns with199s. Round five finally decided Farrington the winner, but Kice finished with the Junior Gold
trophy. Runner-up Monty Montgomery 198, won his shoot-off after three rounds. Scores of 198s were divided out to winners Bruce Davis (AAA), CL Fulton (AA) and Mike Hoskinson (A). Eddie Johnson was the winner in B class with a 197 and Jeremy Hess also shot a great score of 198 to lead C class shooters. Morgan Domme took Lady I, Deborah Richter, Lady II, Jaryt Hess, Sub Junior, while Sub Veteran champ Jeff Cuer went another round in a shoot-off to win. Rob Taylor took the Veteran trophy and Kenneth Johnston won his shoot-off for the Senior Veteran title. Non-Resident’s scored seven 200’s with Austin Jacob’s and Sophie Nostrom going the longest in the shoot-off. Austin won by one target in the last round as a storm was turning the skies a dark denim blue.
332 shooters took the line in the Event 13 Doubles Championship despite another day of windy conditions. The In-State shooters had a good time of it, with the impressive scores from Cody Eye Champion with the lone 98 and Ruuner-up Jesse Secrest only missing 3 for a 97. Caleb Fischer was the AAA winner with 92, Jason Dinkel took AA with 96, Fred Smith

Having sixty hustlers adorned in bright orange t-shirts made for the almost perfect target loading, scoring, cleaning up and score sheet runners. Not only were these polite workers between the ages of 12-20 years old, there was a mom (she blended in with the youngsters) named Nicole Lott from Wichita. Nicole took on this job this year without even knowing what trapshooting was, learned very quickly and was outstanding. Niclole kept all of her workers organized from under a big tent or pacing the trap line.
The Southwest Grand was held here at the KTA home grounds in September. Look for that coverage in the next issue. A big thanks to all of the KTA staff for the great state shoot this year. n
The 2022 Colonial Classic was hosted by the Pennsylvania State Shotgunning Association on June 11 and 12. The Colonial Classic is technically the start of the Pennsylvania State Shoot but all of the events are shot off Sunday afternoon following the Doubles Championship, and the shoot is counted separately from the State Shoot for All-American Points. The Singles Championship is determined by the combined scores of Saturday’s and Sunday’s 100 target Singles events. The High Over All consists of the total 600 target program, and the High All Around consists of the combined Singles events plus the Handicap and Doubles events on Sunday.
The Colonial Classic’s events on Saturday are named after the highaverage female shooter from Pennsylvania, in each discipline. Since Deborah Ohye-Neilson led the state in each discipline for ladies, all of the Saturday events were named in her honor.
Overcast skies and light winds made for excellent shooting conditions for Saturday’s Deborah
Ohye-Neilson Singles. In all, 11 shooters turned in perfect scores in the event, and the following day’s Singles event would determine the results.
The skies began to clear for the Deborah Ohye-Neilson Handicap and a number of good scores were posted. Joshua Christ Jr. led the field of 460 with a lone high score of 99 and was the event Champion. Owen Colucci was the Junior Champion with the only score of 97
in the event, and Owen Daniels was the Junior runner-up with one less. Scores of 96 shot off for runner-up through sixth places. Following one shoot-off round, Ryan Trugan was the event runner-up, Chris Vendel third place, Justin Malone fourth place, John Feldmann fifth place,
WESLEY BEAVERand Ian Darroch sixth place, all with scores of 96. Michael Poe was the Sub Veteran winner without need for a shoot-off with a 96.
The skies cleared and the breeze picked up for the afternoon’s Deborah Ohye-Neilson Doubles. Wesley Beaver, Joe Charnigo, Joseph Breck IV, and Joel Etchen were high with scores of 98. Following a carryover the next day, Beaver was the event Champion and Charnigo the Class AAA winner, Breck IV and Etchen fell back to take their respective Junior and Veteran categories. Jay Griesemer and Carl Chadwell were the Sub Veteran Champion and runner-up with the only scores of 97 in the event.
The events on Sunday are named after the high-average male shooter
in each discipline. The day started off with the Brandon Deal Singles, the second half of the Colonial Classic Singles Championship. Seventeen shooters broke 100 straights, but Chris Vendel and Robert Jarvis were the only shooters to break 100s on both Saturday and Sunday. Heavy rain moved in by the time the Singles shoot-offs were called and following one very wet shoot-off round, Vendel was the event Champion and Jarvis fell back to take Sub Veteran Champion. Jon Zadzora was the Sub Veteran runner-up with a 199 due to Jarvis falling back to take the category
title with 200. Brandon Deal was the Class AAA Champion following a 199 and forfeit by Justin Slater, who took Class AAA runner-up. Douglas Worell was the Class AA Champion with a 199, and Brian Snyder was the AA runner-up following a shoot-off win. Jacob Jensen was the high shooter in the Junior Gold category with a 199. Cooper Nystrom, William Natcher, William Wallis, and Alexcis Coningsby were Champions in Junior, Veteran, Senior Veteran, and Lady I categories, all with scores of 198.
The skies had cleared and the
breeze picked up by the start of the Ian Darroch Handicap. Alan Deal and Larry Shade were high in the event with scores of 97 and, after two shoot-off rounds, Deal was the Champion and Shade the Senior Veteran winner. Ian Darroch was the event runner-up with a 96 and one shoot-off round over Eric Flexer, who took 3rd place in the event. Cole Cervantes and Jack Rebuck were Champion and runner-up in the Sub Junior category after 96s and a shoot-off, Allan Hunter was the Sub Veteran winner with the same score.
The wind had settled and clouds
rolled in for the afternoon’s Wesley Beaver Doubles. The light wind and overcast skies made for excellent visibility and scores were high as a result. Cody Davis, Ken Darroch, and Joe Charnigo were high with scores of 99. Charnigo forfeited the shootoff to take Class AAA Champion, leaving Davis and Darroch to shoot off for the championship title. Davis broke a 19 to Darroch’s 18 the first round and was the Colonial Classic Doubles Champion, Darroch fell back to take Sub Veteran Champion.
John Pettibone was the Class A winner outright with a 98, and Chris Vendel was the Class AAA runner-up with the same score and a shoot-off over Ian Darroch.

The 2022 Pennsylvania State Shoot was hosted by the Pennsylvania State Shotgunning Association from Monday, June 13, through Sunday, June 19. Due to its large size, the Pennsylvania State Shoot attracts shooters from not only the Northeast region, but also across the country. A total of 1,663 shooters from 30 different states and provinces participated in the tournament this year. Monday and Tuesday are the preliminary days at the shoot and all trophies on these two days are Open. The High Over All for the shoot starts on Wednesday and consists of 1,100 total targets, and resident and Non-Resident trophies are awarded on all of these events.
Preliminary Days kicked off Monday morning at 10am. Temperatures in the low 90s and very little wind made for good but hot shooting conditions throughout the day. In the first Handicap event of the day, the Rick’s Refrigeration Handicap, Henry Kuestner was high over the field by a two-target margin with a 98.
Six shooters out of the field of 146 posted perfect scores in the Shamrock Leather Singles, and the results after carryover are as follows— Brandon Deal (event
Champion), Luke Dudash (Sub Junior Champion), Joseph Breck IV (Junior Champion), Jack Noftz (Junior Gold Champion), Donald Scott Grossman (Sub Veteran Champion), and Charles Gern (Senior Veteran Champion).
John Guda led the afternoon’s L&M Lenses Handicap with a lone high 97 from 21½ yards and was the event Champion. Timothy Scott was the event runner-up, and John Federici was high in Senior Veteran, each with 96s. Joe Broscious, Robert Jarvis, and Bruce Schmidt were the event third, Sub Veteran, and Veteran winners, all with 95s.
Tuesday’s events started off with the BJ’s Restaurant Singles. Five shooters turned in 100 straights and after the carryover, Cooper Nystrom was the event Champion. Brandon Deal and Gary Asbury Jr. were the winners in Class AAA and C following their perfect scores.
Nicholas Wertz and Jack Noftz led Junior and Junior Gold categories, also with 100 straights.
Andy Sukel III led the field of 127 in the Morgan Optical Handicap with a 96 from 23 yards. Cole Cervantes and Martin Slobodnik were the Sub Junior and
Sub Veteran winners, both with 95s. Kyle Kanuha led the afternoon’s 100 pair Valley Gun Club Doubles with a field high score of 196. Brian Shyda was two targets back from Kanuha and was the Sub Veteran Champion. Jake Levin topped Class AAA with a 192.
WEDNESDAY Wednesday is the start of the Pennsylvania State Shoot’s 1,100 target high over all, as well as resident and Non-Resident trophies. As a result, attendance also picked up significantly. In the Jack Deisher Memorial Singles, five Pennsylvania residents posted perfect scores and, following a carryover, Cooper Nystrom was the resident Champion. Douglas Worrell and Chris Vendel were first and second in Class AAA standings, and Ryan Trugan and Michael Lipetz were the Class AA and A Champions in the event.
Four out-of-state shooters posted perfect scores in the event and, following carryover, Michael Blaisdell was the Non-Resident Champion. Joseph Charnigo, Gregory Smith, and Louie Morgan were the Class AAA, Sub Veteran, and Senior Veteran winners.
Charles Cessna led the field of 422 shooters in the Neil Mertz Memorial Handicap with a 99 from 22½ yards and was the resident Champion without need for a shoot-off. Chris Vendel was the runner-up with a 98, and Caitline Bonser was the Lady I Champion, also with a 98. Wesley Beaver, John Guda, and Randy Krick were the Junior Gold, Sub Veteran, and Veteran winners, all with 96s. Cole Cervantes and Richard Marshall Jr. led Non-Resident shooters with 97s. Following a forfeit by Marshall, Cervantes was the NonResident Champion, and Marshall was the runner-up.
Cody Davis, Wesley Beaver, and Ken Darroch were high for Pennsylvania shooters in the Thomas Burkey Memorial Doubles. After carryover the next day, Davis was the Champion, while Beaver and Darroch fell back to take Champion in Junior Gold and Sub Veteran categories. Ian Lawrence led all shooters in the event and was the Non-Resident Champion with the lone high score of 99. Joe Charnigo, Garrett Helms, and
Michael Blaisdell were the Class AAA, Junior Gold, and Sub Veteran winners, all with second high scores of 98.
Attendance continued to grow Thursday, and 566 shooters took the line in the Malsnee Tile & Stone Class Singles. Overcast skies and a steady breeze kept scores down overall and only 4 resident shooters posted perfect scores. Cody Rahn was the Class AAA Champion with the only non-category 100 straight. Cooper Nystrom, Robert Williams, and Taylor Hansen were the Junior, Senior Veteran, and Lady I winners, all with 100 straights. Matthew Rebuck and James T Johnston led AA and A Class with 99s. Jon Zadzora, Roger Herb, and Deborah Ohye-Neilson were high in Sub Veteran, Veteran, and Lady II categories, also with 99s. Richard Marshall Jr. and Joe Charnigo were the Non-Resident Class AAA Champion and runner-up with 100s. Tuff Hutchins, Michael Blaisdell, and Kay Ohye were the Non-Resident Junior, Sub Veteran, and Senior Veteran winners following perfect scores.
The wind picked up by the start of the CAC Associates Preliminary Handicap. Ian Recla, Ryan Trugan, and Roger Shallenberger turned in field high scores of 97 and would
shoot off that evening to determine the outcome. After two shoot-off rounds, Recla was the resident Champion, Trugan the runner-up, and Shallenberger the third place winner. Brandon Deal, Matthew McDonald, and Ian Darroch were the fourth, fifth, and sixth place winners with 96s. Bryan Emilius was the Sub Veteran Champion with the only category score of 96. Ian Lawrence once again led the Non-Resident field, this time with the lone high score of 97 and was the Non-Resident Champion.
The wind calmed down some for the afternoon’s Silver Seitz Class Doubles. Cody Davis and Kory Shissler were the high Pennsylvania shooters in the event and took Class AAA and AA titles with scores of 98. Joseph Breck IV, Wesley Beaver, and Ken Darroch were the Champions in Junior, Junior Gold, and Sub Veteran with 97s. Joe Charnigo, Michael Blaisdell, and Garrett Helms topped Non-Resident ranks with 99s and were the Class AAA, Sub Veteran, and Junior Gold Champions. Alexcis Coningsby had the only Non-Resident score of 98 in the event and was the Lady I winner.
At most major tournaments throughout the country, the weekend
championship events see the highest attendance but that is not the case in Pennsylvania. Friday’s Krieghoff Handicap is the largest event of the Pennsylvania State Shoot every year and for good reason! A new K-80 Combo is given away by Krieghoff International and Allem’s Guncraft to the winner of the Krieghoff Challenge. The rules for the Krieghoff Challenge are as follows—at the conclusion of the event, two numbers between 0 and 9 are drawn at random and all shooters whose score ends in one of those two numbers are eligible to shoot off for the gun. Shoot-off rounds are shot two targets per post, 10 targets per round until a final winner is determined. This year the numbers 5 and 7 were drawn, and all shooters whose scores ended in those numbers were called to check in to shoot off. 225 took the line in the shoot-off and after three rounds only two shooters remained, Chad Whitman and Bryan Davis. The two shooters would go three more rounds and, following a score of Whitman’s 9 to Davis’s 8 in the sixth round, Whitman was the winner of the Krieghoff Challenge shoot-off.
Friday was the start of three days of the most difficult shooting conditions in recent memory in Pennsylvania. Gusting 20-30mph winds made for very challenging targets, and scores of 95 were high for the day out of the field of 1,000 shooters. Five Pennsylvania
shooters would shoot off for the resident title following the conclusion of the Krieghoff Challenge shoot-off. After two shoot-off rounds, James Hoffman was the Champion, John Toki was runner-up, Lawrence Natcher third place, Donald Ray Jobe fourth place, and James Stoner Sub Veteran Champion. David Stancavage was the fifth place winner with the only resident score of 94 in the event. Three Non-Resident shooters also turned in scores of 95 and following a shoot-off—Curtis Criste was the Non-Resident Champion, Ian Christian Woods, the Junior Gold Champion, and Todd Sauble, the Sub Veteran Champion. Michael Goltry was the Non-Resident Veteran winner with the only NonResident score of 94.
Saturday morning saw overcast skies and a chilly breeze for the morning of the Robert “Bob” Deifenderfer Memorial Singles Championship. The dark skies and wind made for challenging conditions for the first half of the event. The skies cleared by the start of the second 100, but by then the wind picked up significantly and scores once again plummeted. Three Pennsylvania shooters, Nicholas Wertz, Larry Shade, and Mike Endy turned in 199s and would shoot off for the coveted state Singles title. The sun was

setting by the time shoot-offs were called, and the lights were turned on to try and enhance the visibility in the twilight. Shade was the only one of the three to make it through the first post clean, but during the third post the wind picked up and he let a high target slip away to even things up again. Shade and Endy each let one more go on the last post, and Wertz finished the round with only one miss and would claim his second career Pennsylvania State Singles title. Wertz previously won the title in 2020 with the lone 200 straight. Endy and Shade fell back to take Champion in the Sub Veteran and Senior Veteran categories. Following a shoot-off, Brian Snyder was the
resident runner-up, James Hoffman the Class AAA Champion, and Ian Darroch the Class AAA runner-up, all with 198s. Becki Logan led all shooters in the event with the lone 200 straight, her career first double century, and was the Non-Resident Singles Champion. Richard Marshall Jr. was the Non-Resident Class AAA Champion, and Alexcis Coningsby the Non-Resident Lady I Champion, with the only Non-Resident scores of 199 and 198, respectively.
The wind did not relent Sunday morning for the last day of the Pennsylvania State Shoot. A strong headwind picked up early in the morning and continued throughout the day. The targets for the Lucas Oil Doubles Championship were wild, with many targets lifting up well over the picturesque mountain background of the Elysburg trap line. Nicholas Wertz claimed his second state title of the week with the lone high resident score of 98. Evan Mood came in with a 97 and was the runner-up. Cody Davis was the Class AAA Champion with the only resident score of 96. The extremely challenging conditions did not stop Junior Gold shooter Klayton McGee of Oklahoma from breaking his career first 100 straight in Doubles. McGee was the Non-Resident Champion by a threetarget margin over the rest of the
field. Ian Lawrence was the Junior Gold Champion with a 97, and Jerry Osborne III was the category runner-up with a 95. Michael Blaisdell was the Sub Veteran Champion with the only other NonResident score of 95.
The wind continued to intensify by the start of the Allem’s Guncraft Handicap Championship and the scores plummeted. Scores of 93 were high for Pennsylvania shooters. This was the lowest score in the history of the Pennsylvania State Shoot to lead the Championship Handicap. Ryan Trugan, Chris Vendel, Dawson Schoffstall, Richard Brunell, and Michelle Shaffer were called to shoot-off at the conclusion of the day’s event. After one wind-blown shoot-off round, Trugan had missed only two targets and claimed the Pennsylvania State Handicap Championship. Chris Vendel was the runner-up, while Schoffstall, Brunell, and Shaffer fell back to take Champion in the Junior, Veteran, and Lady II categories. Matthew Rebuck and Mark Hall Jr. were the third and fourth place winners with scores of 92. William McGivern and Mario Dimascia were the Sub Veteran Champion and runner-up, also with 92s. Makenzy Glover led all shooters in the event with the lone high score of 94 and was the Non-Resident Handicap Champion. David Shaeffer Jr. and Richard Marshall Jr. were the Non-Resident
runner-up and third place winners with scores of 93 and 91.
The horrendous shooting conditions over the weekend took a toll on the High All Around scores, where Ian Darroch led resident shooters in All Around standings with a 379x400, one target ahead of Chris Vendel who took Class AAA Champion. Richard Marshall Jr. was the Non-Resident High All Around winner with a 384, and David Shaeffer Jr. was the Non-Resident AAA winner with a 381. Chris Vendel secured the High Over All title with 1039x1100. Ryan Trugan was the Class AA winner with 1038,
and Wesley Beaver was the Junior Gold Champion with 1037. Ian Lawrence and Richard Marshall Jr. topped Non-Residents in the High Over All with scores of 1056. After one shoot-off round, Lawrence was the Non-Resident High Over All Champion (his fourth straight year capturing this championship title), and Marshall was the AAA winner.
The competition this year at the Pennsylvania State Shoot was fierce, as always, and in spite of the adverse conditions of the last three days, the shoot ended up with a competition factor of 6 for AllAmerican points. The folks at the

The Syren Tempio Trap is the first and only gun specifically tailored for the female trap shooter. This no compromises competition shotgun puts a premium on performance as well as aesthetics. First and foremost the shotgun needs to fit and handle properly. To accomplish this Syren has created a stock that is design to fit the female shooter. Some of the specialized dimensions include; length of pull, a smaller grip, and an increased pitch and cast to name just a few. The barrel and stock weight are calibrated to make the gun balance properly and easier to handle.
To further customize the firearm we incorporated the DTS (Dynamic Tuning System), which allows any shooter to tailor the gun to their individual style. The rib on both the over-andunder and unsingle barrel are adjustable for point-of-impact. The second aspect is the DTS comb, which moves four ways allowing the shooter to adjust the comb height, drop, offset, and cast. At the heart of the DTS system is the trigger, which is designed to meet the most demanding expectations with adjustable take-up, over-travel, and length of pull. Visit our website now for more details.
BY MATTHEW GAY built specifically for ladies. This company continues to be responsive to the feedback of lady shooters in terms of what they desire in a target gun. This Syren model hits the nail on the head and brings true versatility to lady shooters at a phenomenal price point.
gun to the market,
The Elevate combo comes packaged in an elegant purple Syren hard case. The combo hard case is fitted
specifically for this model. A separate compartment for the unsingle barrel and the changeable ribs is situated on one side of the case while the over-under barrel and the receiver is contained in the other side. Also contained in the receiver side are the choke tubes in their own case, tools for the adjustable comb and trigger, manuals and a choke wrench. The receiver comes supplied with a cloth Syren storage sleeve and the respective sections fit securely in place. The Tri-Wood is well figured and accents the styling of the receiver.
The receiver of this model has a matte blue finish with a sleek portion on the side of the receiver which resembles jeweled carbon
fiber. “Elos N2 Elevate” is engraved in the sides of the receiver, which really stands out in the white and purple lettering. The bottom of the receiver also has this contrasting lettering and displays the
manufacturer and model. The barrel selector is designed in typical Italian fashion, situated atop the tang mounted safety. The action of this model is of traditional underlug design, the sample locked up very tight. The ejectors were strong and well timed.
The trigger on the Syren Elevate is excellent, breaking crisply right at three pounds for both barrels. No quantifiable creep was felt. As mentioned above the trigger blade is adjustable with the simple application of the factory provided Allen key, allowing for precise grip length customization. Wood to metal fit was suburb with complimentary lines flowing in harmony with the geometry of the receiver.
Syren employs advanced technology in their barrel design but first a look at the basics.
The over/under barrels are pleasantly weighted giving the shotgun great balance. The ventilated mid-rib helps to rapidly remove heat while the matte blue finish decreases glare. On top of the barrels the QRR (Quick Release Rib) is the feature that makes this model a true multi-sport gun.Two ribs are provided with the combo, one designed to shoot a 50/50 point of impact and another designed to shoot a 65/35 POI. Swapping the rib is simple. By pushing out a pin secured by an internal detent located at the receiver end above the trunnions, the rib can be moved forward to release it from the permanently affixed catch on the muzzle end of the barrel. Changing the rib takes about 30 seconds, the pin can be removed with a simple ink pen. Both ribs are supplied with a white Bradley style front bead and a silver mid bead. The rib securely locked into place.
The Syren Elevate Combo comes with a 34-inch unsingle trap barrel threaded for the Exis HP competition chokes supplied with the combo. This barrel is designed to shoot 70/30 point of impact making it the perfect choice for Singles and Handicap events. Being an unsingle barrel, recoil is directed straight back, reducing muzzle flip.
The Turkish walnut stock of the Elevate is finished with the patented TRIWOOD™ process.
accentuates the natural figure of the walnut. The TRIWOOD™ stock is protected by a tough scratch –resistant acrylic varnish.
locks securely into place. Checkering is well executed and comfortable.
The TRIWOOD™ finish, introduced by Fabarm in 2002, is a hi-tech process to improve the walnut grain and offer excellent water resistant protection. This process brings out the warmth and feel of the wood. The walnut quality, contrast and grade are extremely important to obtain a perfect TRIWOOD™ finish. The objective is to have a perfect mix between the original and additional grains. TRIWOOD™ is not a film fixed on the walnut; it’s a process to deposit ink on a piece of wood which
The furniture on this model has an attractive satin finish that highlights the figure of the walnut. The checkering is well done and comfortable. The adjustable portion of the comb is wood but is covered in a durable synthetic material that gives the look of a leather covered pad.The Micro Metric 3D adjustable comb comes standard on the Syren Elevate. One of the most important aspects of an adjustable comb is the ability to set it and keep it in place. The hardware on this model is very strong, staying in place once set. Syren includes the Kinetic recoil reducer standard and factory installed. The grip length can be easily fine-tuned with the adjustable trigger blade. The recoil pad provided with this model is a 22mm thick Microcell.
The Schnabel forearm is well matched to the buttstock attaching to the barrel lug with a sturdy slide button mechanism. Wood to metal fit is excellent and the fore-end
Syren utilizes TriBore technology in its barrels. The science behind TriBore is quite convincing and the test data it produces supports the effectiveness of the design. Simply put, the barrel has three internal profiles. The forcing cones are significantly lengthened creating a slow transition to the 18.7 mm main bore, then prior to the shot reaching the choke, there is another slightly tapered section, 205 mm long, which slowly reduces the bore diameter to that of the choke at 18.4 mm. Syren claims that this innovation has the same effect as the over-bored barrels produced by other manufacturers (reduction of friction thus less pellet deformation), without the reduction in velocity realized by a rapid gas expansion into a larger chamber. The relevant factor is the slow step down to the choke constriction diameter. This eliminates the shoulder of the choke which is where it meets the bore once fully threaded into the barrel. According to Syren’s testing data, on a 30” target at 30 meters, the TriBore barrels achieved a 13% higher rate of pellet strike with a modified Exis HP choke than their competitors.
Since this shotgun is designed for the lady shooter, who better to demo it than Syren’s very own Pro Staffer and a favorite Jersey girl shooter, Grace Callahan. The adaptation of the Elevate to a female shooter is evident when watching Grace mount this shotgun. The fit was nearly perfect
out of the box and fine tuning was quick and simple. Again, with the unsingle barrel, recoil is better managed for those long tournament days by transferring the energy straight back and reducing
muzzle flip. The 30” O/U barrel is perfectly suited to double trap and other disciplines with the versatility and technology of the Exis HP choke system.
The major advantage to the
Elevate Combo is the versatility contained within one package. It is also important to note that the Elevate has a reduced length of pull (13.9 inches, adjustable at the trigger), an increased pitch and
drop at comb to accommodate measurements of the female shooter. The easily changeable QRR rib from a 65/35 to 50/50 point of impact combined with an unsingle option makes this model extremely attractive to multi-discipline and dedicated trap shooters alike. Add to that the support of a company with a proven track record for excellent service and responsiveness to their clientele, and lady shooters have an excellent option that meets the needs of all disciplines. n

Monday started the Illinois State Vintage Championship where you had to shoot a vintage gun such as a pump gun, side by side, or single barrels with no modern adjustments. They shot 50 Singles with Jordan Ziercher becoming the champion due to a flip with Cody Dickerson. The 50 Handicap from their ATA yardage winner was Morgan Baine. Rodney Johnson won with 47 in the Doubles competition.
Tuesday started with the White Flyer Singles. Steven Margherio (Junior), Brady Cox (Junior Gold), and Ken Knearem all broke 100. Margherio took Class AAA, Cox took AA, and Knearem got Class C as there were no category trophies. Steven Margherio was high with a 99 in Mike’s Guns Handicap, the second event of the day. Brady Cox broke the only 100 in the Sunset Brokerage Doubles, but there were no category trophies so he took AA
Class, letting Margherio slide in with a 99 for Class AAA. Tuesday after shooting many went into the clubhouse to celebrate the induction of Mike Westjohn and Michael Walker into the Illinois State Hall of Fame.
The overall started on Wednesday with scorching temperatures in the 100s. The Baker Farms Doubles had
six shooters with the high score of 99—David Deitch, Keith Ditto, Frank Haynes, Marvin Allbright Jr, Ben Schlatter, and Michael Gooch. Frank Haynes was the only one in-state with the high score and took the prize in the Veteran category. Ditto took AAA, Schlatter was the Junior champ, Deitch overtook Gooch in the carryover for Sub Veteran and Allbright was the Senior Veteran winner.
Sixteen hundreds were broken In the Hall of Fame Singles. Winning with them for In-State were Justin Dewitt (AA), Ian Gilman (Sub Junior), Jacob Fournie (Junior), Brady Cox (Jr Gold), Bill Leasher (Sub Veteran), Frank Haynes (Veteran) and Mike Westjohn (Senior Veteran). For out-of-state shooters, Keith Ditto won over Kya Funkhouser for the AAA class trophy.
A Junior shooter, Jacob Fournie, broke his first 100 straight in the Illinois Gun Clubs Handicap to win Champion for residents. Shelly Heitner won Champion for the Outof-State with a 98. There was also a Miss-and-Out sponsored by Baker Lead Reclamation later that night
where the shooters started at the 27-yard line and moved back to the 30-yard line. Steven Margherio won after taking it to the 27-yard line on the next trap over!
Thursday’s temperatures may have been slightly lower but the humidity made it feel much worse. Eleven shooters broke the 100 in the Indiana Gun Club Singles Class Championship. In State trophies were awarded to Johnny Picone (Junior), Mike Westjohn (Senior Veteran), Randy Miller (AA), Terry
Obrien (Sub Veteran). In the Out-ofState action, winners with 100s were Trey Wilburn (AAA), Dagen Voigtman (Junior Gold), James Frost (Sub Veteran) and Larry Tagtmeyer (Senior Veteran).
In the Illinois Director’s Handicap Carson Sievers and Joshua Athmer both broke 100. Sievers broke a 25 in the shoot-off forcing Athmer to the Sub Junior spot since they were both residents. Dagen Voigtman forfeited taking his Junior Gold award to give Keith Ditto the Out-of-State Champion with 98.
Brittany Shooting Park Doubles ended the day and had Steven Margherio breaking the only hundred. Since it was class day he took Junior, giving Frank Bently III AAA honors with 98 for In-State. Out-of-State shooters Keith Ditto (AAA), Dagen Voigtman (Junior Gold), and Kenneth Brandt (Veteran) all broke 99s and took their category or class outright.
Friday morning a thunderstorm rolled through the area and knocked out power for a hundred miles. Luckily for the competitors shooting the White Flyer Doubles Class Championship the event started only an hour late. Dagen Voigtman from Nebraska broke the only 100, and he took the Junior Gold trophy, leaving Zachari Nannini to slide in for AAA Champion. For Residents John Kravanek (A), Steven Margherio (Junior), Frank Payne (Veteran) were all class or category winners with scores of 99 which let Chase Horton take AAA class with 96.
In the White Flyer Handicap Dagen Voigtman and Terry O’Brien both ran the century for Out-ofState and In-State Champion respectively. While waiting for the shoot-offs all participants enjoyed a
home cooked meal consisting of pork steak, baked beans, coleslaw, potato salad, bread, and drinks provided by the family!
Temperatures cooled down into the high eighties for the Illinois Singles Championship presented by Winchester. Keith Ditto and Kya Funkhouser were the only two that put the deuce together. As both were Non-Resident they shot off and Funkhouser beat Ditto in the second round to take the Out-ofState Champion. Funkhouser, who just finished high school and came out to the shoot with friends instead of with Dad was being teased that maybe she should leave Dad at home more often! In-State Champion went to Chase Horton after Harvey Shultz missed in the third round of the shoot-off, and Mike Jordan forfeited and took Senior Veteran with 199.
Sunday was another gorgeous day to begin the Illinois Doubles Championship. Ben Schlatter from Iowa broke one hundred earning him Out-of-State Champion and a nice graduation gift since he just
graduated high school. The other perfect score was shot by Cole Gordon, who broke his first perfect Doubles score in his own Championship.
Illinois Handicap Championship sponsored by Kolar saw four 99s in-state—William Michels (Sub Veteran), John Upcraft (Sub Veteran), Levi Rensing (Junior), and Leroy Jording Jr. (Veteran). Leroy came out victorious as the In-State Champion with a 24. Rensing took Junior while the Sub Veterans had to continue shooting. Upcraft and Michels both broke a 25 in the second round, but Michels beat him out with 24 to 23 in the third round for the win. 98s were high for Out-

TERRY O’BRIENThe 136th annual Ohio State Trapshooting Tournament was held Monday June 20th-26th, at their home grounds, The Cardinal Shooting Center, in Marengo, Ohio. A thunderstorm came barreling through on Monday the week before the shoot, but six days of tirelessly working to repair the curtain and it was all ready for Monday at 8:05 when the kids showed up to shoot.
The trapshooters began with a fun day on Monday and It all started with a 50 bird-22 yard charity Handicap sponsored by Kay’s Upholstery with $500 added money. Carson Cummings was the only one with 50 which made it easy. Then there was a Miss and Out by Michael Blair with another $500 added money. Shooters shoot one shot at a time from a historic concrete 27 yard marker from Vandalia. Most of the crowd took two rounds, but in the third they made the target hard: fast and low, in the fourth round they turned it to a wobble trap where the Michigan youth shooters were hanging tough, but by the sixth round they
were down to four shooters. It eventually took nine rounds to decide that Breydon Paxson came in first, Doug McMullen second, and Wyatt Debrie third place.
While the adults were having their fun the kids were shooting in the Dave Schock Scholastic Clay Trap Program. Schock recently passed and his presence was missed as he was an integral part of running the Ohio SCTP for over 20 years. The Cardinal Center allowed the OSTA to use all 12 Banks at the Cardinal Center due to the record number of Youth Shooters. At the end of the day 640 kids participated. There were 31 Ohio SCTP Teams and three Non-
Resident teams. The shoot also included a High Overall Event for those teams which not only shot trap, but also participated in the sporting clays and skeet championships. The Rookie Division was won by the Ohio Claybusters with 825. Centerburg took second place with a 775 and the Buckeye Chippewa finished third with a 723. In the Intermediate Entry Division— Buckeye Chippewa took first place (847), Moulton Gun Club Youth Shooters (846 ) and Centerburg finished third with 828.
The Cardinal Claycrushers took first place with a 944 in the Intermediate Advanced Division. Then Ohio Claybusters (921) followed by Centerburg (910). In the Junior Varsity Division Buckeye Chippewa took first place with a 938, Northwest Shooting Sports took second place with a 924, and Lorain County Youth Trap Team finished in third place with a 922. Central Ohio Hunters and Anglers
Lead Slingers took first place with a 974 in the Varsity Division. Buckeye Chippewa took second place (971) and Moulton Gun Club Youth Shooters finished in third place with a 966.
Buckeye Chippewa took first place with a combined score of 1847 in the High Overall. Which was ahead of Toledo Trap & Skeet Swamp Rats by 54 birds.
On Tuesday the opening ceremony commenced at 8:30 with raising the flag, playing the National Anthem and saying the Pledge of Allegiance. Then began the Gunner Hall Singles where all the trophies were open. Eight shooters broke the 100. Winning with perfect scores were Jeff Fanello (AAA) over Craig Denlinger, Daniel Veite (AA), Brian Luther (A), Kameran Duvall (Sub Junior), Gunner Hall (Junior Gold), William Natcher (Veteran), and Tamera Kaufman (Lady II). In the Bryced Posten Handicap, Junior Gold
shooter Carson Cummings broke the lone 99 for the champion trophy. In the Joseph Charnigo Doubles, they shot 100 pair for a total of 200. The high score of 197 was shot by two Junior Gold shooters—Caleb Mathis and James Malin. Mathis overtook Malin in the carryover.
The Stock Lock II Handicap was the first event on Wednesday and Keith Ditto, Sam Hawkins, and Ryan Glow all came in with high scores of 99. Hawkins took Resident Champion, Ditto and Glow decided to carry over to the afternoon Handicap event, where Ditto took Non-Resident Champion and Glow, the NonResident runner-up.
Game Masters Singles was up next with 14 AAA, seven AA, three A and one C shooters breaking them all. Austin Jacob, Michael Wengerd, and John Thomas were still tied after the carryover into the next event, but Jacob prevailed and ran the next hundred in the carryover which earned him the Resident AAA Class Winner for Event 5. Ricky Marshall and Lewis Herbert were still tied after the first carryover, but Marshall won it in the next for Non-Resident AAA honors.
The hot day ended with the Krieghoff Handicap. Non-Resident,
Ricky Marshall, and Resident Michael Wengerd both broke 98s to win the Champions spot. If you played the Stock Lock II option for events starting with event one, five names were drawn from each event, you had a chance. These 20 shooters got to qualify for the shoot-off. They shot two targets at each post for a total of ten. There were three people who went three rounds of perfect tens. But in the fourth round it all fell out—David Swigart, Ethan Keber, Jerry Osborne in that order.
The temperature dropped ten degrees and was beautifully sunny for the Singles Class Championship sponsored by Michael Gooch and Indiana Gun Club. Twenty three shooters—12 AAA, seven AA and four A broke them all. Ten of the twenty-three were category shooters. This meant that the class trophies for Residents went to Joseph Charnigo (AAA), Michael Kemp (AA), Travis Barcheck (Junior), John Evick (Sub Veteran), Robert Grosjean (Veteran), Craig Blank (Senior Veteran), and Beverly Scott (Lady I). Non-Resident winners were Ricky Marshall (AAA), JD Ellwanger (AA), Bryan Nemec (A), William Wyatt Debrie (Sub Junior), Ian Lawrence (Junior Gold), and Larry York (Veteran).
The President Ron Arter Handicap, sponsored by Brittain Motors, had Ricky Marshall on top again with 99 all by himself. He snagged the Non-Resident Champion while leaving Elaina McCarthy and Brady Harwell to shoot-off for Resident Champion. Harwell scored the top spot with 23 while McCarthy fell back to Lady I.
The last event was the Ohio Valley Veneer Doubles. Austin Jacob broke the perfect century along with Ian Lawrence. Jacob won AAA for Resident, Lawrence was the Non-Resident Junior Gold winner. Cody Davis broke 99 to win NonResident AAA.
Thursday evening started with the Annual Hall of Fame Reception with live music, and refreshments. Hall of Fame Inductees this year were Todd Loar, Joe Charnigo, and Steve Stedman. The Ohio State Trapshooting Association went on to recognize their scholarship recipients—Brooke Lower, Kylie Spade, Lauren Flick, Zach Thomas Wagner, Drew Black, Ryan House, Daniel Proctor, Jacob Graf, Chandler Cox, Delaney Harris, Weston Petitt, and Halie Jacobs. They ended with presenting their State Teams with a goodie bag filled with an OSTA pullover and a hat.
AJ’s Supplies Handicap started Friday morning. Ian Darroch from Pennsylvania broke the only 100, not only earning him the NonResident Champion, but also completing his Grand Slam. The next highest score was 98. Travis Barcheck (Junior) and Tim McCracken were the two Residents who had to shoot-off for the Champion spot. McCracken posted a 25 in the shoot-off to force Barcheck back down to Junior.
The Doubles Class Championship was the only event left for the day and Ricky Marshall broke the only 100 earning him AAA Non-Resident Champion easily. For residents a 99 was shot by Dale Schock, but since he was a Sub Veteran he took his category and let the 98s carry over into the next event—Patrick McCarthy, Joseph Charnigo, and Kyle Hamilton for AAA. Charnigo pulled out the win. McCarthy gained the runner-up spot leaving Hamilton trophyless for the event.

The 144th annual Nebraska State Shoot was held on Wednesday June 22nd through June 26th with 1100 registered ATA targets scheduled for the tournament. Shooters and families were welcomed by friendly staff to get classified, squadded and cashiered in the clubhouse. The Nebraska Trapshooting Association (NTA) used a new software (SOS Clays) to get people registered for the week.
The tournament started with the Bryce McGill Singles event with 229 entries. The weather was hot and humid to begin the day with low wind. In-State Champion of the event was Trent Christiancy with a perfect score and after a 4 way tie in the carryover. Gregory Bauer took runner-up with a 99 in a six way tie in the carry. The categories were won by Payton Detavernier (Lady I), Michelle Schulte (Lady II), Jon Marsh (Sub Veteran), Paul Teel (Veteran), Randy Bartling (Senior Veteran), Dagen Voigtman (Junior Gold), Caden Clapper (Junior) and Kohen Burda (Sub Junior).
The out-of-state Champion was Richard Amundson from South Dakota with a score of 100 straight. Runner-up was Kya Funkhouser from Oklahoma after carryover
from the six way tie.
The Cade Arnett Handicap had 208 entries. Dr. Marvin Meyer (a retired dentist) who is now residing in Ft. Collins, Colorado, came back to shoot with his great-great niece, Danica Schoone, and other family this week. Dr. Meyer is 88 years old.
There is a 74 year age difference between he and Danica. However, his age didn’t prevent him from smashing targets.
Dagen Voigtman took Champion of the event after posting a near perfect 99 and John Skallberg carded 95 to take the runner-up trophy. Caden Clapper was the short yardage winner, while Carl Bohne, Nels Johnson and Zach Bryant claimed Mid, Long and 27 yardage trophies. The Zaruba Singles, Zaruba Handicap, and Zaruba Doubles were scheduled for Thursday’s events. The shoot started off with 75 degree weather, light rain, and slightly breezy, but the wind picked up in the afternoon for caps and Doubles.
In the Singles, Dagen Voigtman broke a 100 straight and was named the Champion after the 4 round carryover with David Knapp who finished as runner-up.
In the Handicap, Sub Junior Clay Maloley broke 96 and won the shoot-off for In State Champion at his very first state shoot. Zach

Friday started the Nebraska Doubles Championship with 258 entries. Winds were gusting at 15mph from the SSE which made for some sporty Doubles as the wind increased, and the clays were diving fast. Dagen Voigtman was event champ with a lone 99 on the leaderboard. Zach Bryant broke 93 to finish as the runner-up. Other Champions were Payton Detavernier and Michelle Schulte in Lady I and Lady II with scores of 95 and 57. The Michigan State Trapshooting Association hosted the 111th State Shoot on June 28th through July 3rd in their home grounds in Mason. The grounds looked phenomenal with new concrete on some of the banks, landscaping in and around the grounds near campground sites and AJ Supplies was there with shells!
Tuesday was a warm-up day with Singles, Handicap, and Doubles. Singles started with six shooters breaking a high score of 99. After the carryover into the next event, it took Jordan Ziercher five sub events to beat Jackson Fox who took runner-up. Andrew Fierke broke the top score with 95 to earn him the Champion spot in the Handicap. For the 100 pair of Doubles, Junior Gold shooter Skylar Clark topped everyone with a 193.
Another beautiful day for Wednesday’s Preliminary Singles where Ian Lawrence, Anna Rawe, Frederick Kaschak broke them all. Kaschak didn’t shoot the next event, which enabled him to take Veteran. Rawe missed one in her first box in the carryover, dropping
her to take runner-up. Lawrence broke them earning him the top spot of Champion.
The next event was named after the Handicap Champion from last year, Thomas Cartwright. Carl Chadwell, Larry Litwin, and Ian Lawrence broke 96 for the high score. Lawrence decided to take Junior Gold, Chadwell backed out taking Sub Veteran giving his good friend and squadmate, Litwin, Champion honors.
In the Carl Chadwell Doubles, Robert Green from Utah broke the lone 100.
The Michigan Shells for Year Handicap One began Thursday morning. Skylar Clark dominated the field with 99. Ian Lawrence was
high for Out-of-State with 98 by himself.
Between the Handicaps was The Donald Romine Singles (Singles Champion 2021). The only ones breaking the 100s were out-ofstaters—Ian Lawrence, Raylee Bishop, Sam Arnett and Jordan Ziercher. In the carryover it was determined that Arnett was Champion, Lawrence runner-up, Bishop AA, and Ziercher didn’t collect a trophy as no category trophies were given. Skylar Clark, Michael Berry, Frank Clark, Jackson Fox were high for In-State with 99s. Fox took the Champion, Berry runner-up, Frank Clark Class B, and Skylar Clark took Junior Gold.
In the Shells for a Year Handicap Two, Chase Horton broke the 100 for Out-of-State Champion! In-State had Skylar Clark and Jeff Slayer with 97s. Slayer slayed Clark with a 25 in the shoot-off giving him Champion and making Clark take his category, Junior Gold. The numbers drawn for the first event were 1& 7 with 32 shooters qualifying, and in the second Handicap it was 4 & 8 with 31
shooters who had a chance to shoot-off for the Shells for a Year donated by AJ Supplies. Six shooters broke the perfect ten (two per post at their ATA yardage) the first round—Ian Lawrence, Sam Arnett, Vern Stalter, Emily Huhn, Jeff Slayer, and John Ladrigue. Dropping out in the second round were Arnett and Huhn. After the third round it was down to Lawrence and Stalter. It took Lawrence only one more perfect ten to win 52 flats of shells from AJ Supplies.

The MTA President’s Handicap was won by Vilas (Roy) Claar with a 100 from the 24-yard line. Sam Arnett won Champion Out-of-State with a lone 99. In the Class Doubles, Ian Lawrence topped the field with the only 100 for Out-of-State Junior Gold, leaving Chase Horton to sneak in for top honors with his 99. Andrew Suda took In-State with his 99. Also breaking 99 In State was Carl Chadwell and he won Sub Veteran outright.
The sun was shining for the 322 shooters who competed in the State Singles Championship. There were 12 100s broken in the morning. Six
of them turned them into deuces. Three were Out-of-State shooters Michael Gooch, Mary Thompson and Liz Ternes. Since it was Liz’s first time ever breaking 200 straight, Gooch decided to leave it to the women and go out to eat taking Sub Veteran. Mary missed one early, but Liz let her back in both finishing with 24s. In the next round Liz missed and Mary put it on fine grind and obliterated them all to take the Championship while Liz dropped to Lady I. In-State residents with perfect scores were Darryl Hayes, Brian Leaym (Sub Veteran), and Jarred Carpenter. Leaym missed in the first round earning him Sub Veteran outright. It took Darryl
Hayes a perfect 100 in the shoot-off to best Carpenter who ended up as the runner-up.
Sunday’s Doubles Championship had Liz Ternes, Ian Lawrence, Chase Horton, and AJ Brenner all breaking the 100. They were all out-of-state so it went down to a shoot-off. Lawrence went home early just taking the Junior Gold, while the other three took it to the line. Brenner missed on the first trap giving him runner-up honors. In the next round Liz missed one earning her Lady I while Horton captured Champion. David Sickmeyer and Andrew Suda broke 97 Doubles to be high for In-State Champion.
Sickmeyer missed two on his third station to make it an easy 20 for Suda to win the state title for the seventh time.

The last week of June in the Beehive State means State Shoot time for Utah trapshooters. This year’s State shoot was held at the Spanish Fork Gun Club and the weather, while warm, was about as good as it can get. There were shooters from 17 states and Canadian provinces, including 16 shooters all the way from Wisconsin. For the uninitiated, Spanish Fork has about the best background for shooting trap of any club in the association and the nighttime views of the city lights are breathtaking.
The Doubles were thrown first on Wednesday, followed by a Handicap and finally a Singles event. In the Joe Sudbury Doubles 98 was on top of the leaderboard when the event finished. After carryovers the winners were Sean Hawley in AAA, Bradley Peay in Sub Junior and Brett Despain in Sub Veteran.
In the Robert Green Handicap, out of state shooters led the way
with scores of 98. Norique Stuewe (MN), George Hass (WI) and James Sharp (AZ) all missed only two targets enroute to their Lady I, Sub Veteran and Senior Veteran trophies.
The Daxton Cook Singles finished off the first day of shooting and there were seven shooters that made it through without a miss. After the carryovers, Quint Sudbury and USTA President Chris Kinder finished with wins in AAA and AA classes, while Pam Wright, George
Hass, Art Peyton (AB) and Stan Baker (CO) all were perfect for Lady II, Sub Veteran, Veteran and Senior Veteran categories.
Event 4, the Haylie Peay Doubles saw George Hass lead the way with a lone 99 to win the Sub Veteran division. Grayson Stuart was only one bird behind Hass to earn a trophy in Junior. Jayme Anderson broke 96 and did not need a carryover to win the AAA class award.
The Chris Kinder Handicap was the second event of the day and three scores of 98 sat atop the scoreboard when it was over. Jared Peay and his daughter Haylie Peay each broke 98s to earn the mid yardage and Lady I trophies, while Art Peyton broke the same score to
earn himself the Veteran award.
Nine shooters stayed perfect throughout the Grayson Stuart Singles event. Tyler Buchanan (WI) needed an additional 100 straight in the carryover to secure the AAA class trophy, while Aubrey Fogarty and Bradley Peay broke 100s to win A class and Sub Junior trophies outright. Marvin Rustad (WI), Joe
PAM WRIGHTSudbury and Gerry Williams (AZ) cashed in their 100s for trophies in Sub Veteran, Veteran and Senior Veteran.
Sean Hawley broke the only 100 straight in his namesake Class Doubles Championship, winning the AAA trophy. Chris Kinder and Avery Fitzgerald broke 96 and 95 to win the AA and A class trophies, while Kelly Brinkerhoff carded a 91 to take the B class award. Gary Bushnell and Kenneth Hutchings were the C and D class winners with scores of 85 and 88 respectively. Mike Grady (NM) and Don Williamson (AZ) each broke the high Non-Resident score of 98 and after the carryover Grady finished as the AAA out of state champ. The second event of the day was the Sean Hawley Handicap and Haylie Peay, Austin Palmer (OK) and George Hass all had near perfect scores of 99 to lead the way. Peay had been punched to the 24 the previous day with her 98 and decided it was already time to move on, winning herself yet another punch and also the In State Champion trophy. Michael Scott and Billy Parrack each broke scores of 94 to win the 25-26.5 and 19-21.5 yardage group trophies, while Jared Peay had a 92 and a 23
in overtime to win the 22-24.5 group. Sean Hawley was the 27 yard winner with 97.
In the Brett Despain Singles Class Championship no In State shooters were able to put a 100 straight on the board, but there were four Non-Residents that turned in perfectos. Tyler Buchanan outlasted fellow Wisconsin shooter Chad Blanke in the carryover for the Non-Resident AAA trophy, while Greg Holden (AZ) broke 100 to win the out of state trophy in Senior Veteran. California shooter Jacob Ridge won the Non-Resident Junior Champ with his 100 straight. Ridge will be joining the United States Marine Corps this summer and we here at TrapshootingUSA send our best wishes with him as he serves our country.
Two Utah shooters, Jayme Anderson and Chance Carter were able to break 200 straight in this year’s State Singles Championship. The shoot-off was fierce, fierce as neither shooter gave an inch for eight overtime rounds. Finally, in the 9th round, Anderson let one slip into the setting sun and Carter was able to finish without a miss to win the title. Lexi Thompson and Jerri Harwell each carded 194s and each
needed a shoot-off to record their Lady I and Lady II title wins. Bradley Peay, Shalako Gunter and Riley Mitchell broke scores of 199, 197 and 198 to earn the Sub Junior, Junior and Junior Gold trophies. Steve Ottesen and Robert Green broke 198s to lead the Sub and Senior Veteran Categories, while Joe Sudbury had a 199 to take home the Veteran award.
On the Non-Resident side there were four shooters that broke them all. Tyler Buchanan finished as the out of state champion after an additional 125 in the shoot-off, Gerry Williams was the Senior Veteran winner and Scott Abo (ID) used his first ever 200 straight to win the Sub Veteran category.

Junior shooter Shalako Gunter tied for the open Singles championship at last year’s state shoot. She lost the shoot-off back then and must have figured that winning a state title would be a lot easier if she just won it outright. Well, on Sunday at the 2022 State Shoot, she did just
that, with the lone high score of 99x100. No shoot-off needed this year! Not far behind were Sharred Oaks and Mike Stuart with scores of 98. Stuart broke a 25 in the shootoff to win the runner-up trophy, leaving Oaks with the 3rd place spot. Jeremie Summers was the 4th place winner with 97, while Darko Gojkovic broke 96 and then 25 in overtime to take 5th place Sean Hawley was the 6th and final place winner with 96. Desanka Deljanin and Pam Wright broke 92 and 95 to win the Lady I and Lady II trophies.
Garrett Schlimmer was the NonResident champion with a score of 98 and no need for a shoot-off.
The High All Around had Jayme Anderson and Sharred Oaks knotted up with scores of 394x400. After one shoot-off round Oaks was declared this year’s winner and Anderson finished as the AAA winner. Mel Hensley (CO) broke 393 to win the out of state honors. In the High Over All, Sean Hawley and George Hass each broke 1266x1300. Hawley was the In State winner and Hass the NonResident Champion.
The Utah State Shoot rotates between Spanish Fork Gun Club and Vernal Rod and Gun Club. Next year I sure hope to see a lot of you

Sometimes you need a 20 gauge; sometimes a 28 gauge, or even a .410. The Briley tube set transforms your single shotgun into two, three or four guns.
It’s the ultimate in versatility from the innovators at Briley. Perfect for skeet, sporting clays, upland game birds, or any other shooting sport you desire. All you need is a Briley tube set and a few minutes to make the change. We show you how, step by step, in our online video.
Briley was one of the first American manufacturers of tube sets, back in 1976. And we’ve been innovating ever since.
Choosing a tube set? Give us a call. (A real person will answer.)
Or come in any time. We’re always ready to talk shot.
Growing up in Minnesota, my first memory of Federal Shotshells was some 50 years back, when duck and Ruffed grouse hunting became my initial shotgun passion. The local sporting goods store sold Federal Hi-Power for ducks, and game loads for grouse. As a 16-year-old in the early 70s, I selected the newly introduced Federal “Champion II” load offering as my trap tournament ammunition. I recall shooting twiceweekly practice, with reloads sourced from my spent tournament hulls. Back then, the price for a box of 25 Federal Champion IIs was $3.35 (yes, I miss those days too).
From pheasant hunting in the 80s, discovering sporting clays in the 90s, then transitioning to FITASC and Sporting clays competition in the 2000s, Federal Ammunition has been there with reliable shotshell offerings. As a young man I was always impressed with the support Federal gave the USA Shooting Teams. Today, they continue that support and have expanded it to Collegiate and High School Teams, in an effort to foster shooter development. This support helps to build the next generation of shooters.
Federal has truly been, and continues to be, a major part of American clay target shooting. 2022 marks Federal’s 100-year anniversary in business, making
high quality ammunition for sport shooters and hunters. The 2021 introduction of the new HOA line of shotshells couldn’t speak louder to Federal’s long commitment to the clay target sports.
Federal Ammunition, headquartered in Anoka, MN, is a brand of the outdoor sports and
recreation holdings company, Vista Outdoors Incorporated. From humble beginnings nestled among the lakes and woods of Minnesota, Federal Ammunition has evolved into one of the world’s largest producers of sporting ammunition. Beginning in 1922, founding president, Charles L. Horn, paved
the way for their success. Today, Federal carries on Horn’s vision for quality products and service with the next generation of outdoorsmen and women. Federal maintains their position as experts in the science of ammunition production. Every day they manufacture products to enhance the customers’ shooting experience, while partnering with the conservation organizations that protect and support our outdoor heritage. Federal offers thousands of options in their Federal Premium and Federal® lines. This versatility in product options positions them as the most complete ammunition company in the business.
Federal has grown to the largest ammunition producer in the world. This legacy is one that has evolved with the needs of shooters. Federal has frequently pioneered new levels
of Shotshell performance to meet the specific demands of some of the world’s best shooters.
1922: Federal Ammunition is founded by Charles Horn. Federal Paper hulls were first used.
1933: First skeet loads introduced.
1940: Federal introduces the eightpoint folded crimp.
1970: Federal shells win more major Grand American Trap and National Skeet trophies than any other brand.
1972: Federal becomes one of the nation’s largest ammunition manufacturers.
1973: Champion ll plastic target shells are introduced. First steel shotshells introduced.
1978: Premium Shotshell and Centerfire shells are introduced.
1980: Introduction of the Gold Medal shotshell line.
1990: Gold Medal Ultramatch .22 rimfire ammo is introduced.
1992: USA Shooting team member
Launi Meili wins first Gold Medal at Olympics.
2003: Famed exhibition shooter
Tom Knapp signed on with Federal Premium Ammunition.
2005: Federal Premium expanded its well-known Gold Medal Target line to include new Sporting Clays loads.
2011: Federal introduced new pink hull Top Gun Target loads in support of fighting breast cancer.
2019: Federal once again supported the U.S. Shooting Team for the 2020 Olympics.
2020: Derrick Mein wins 2020 National Sporting Clays Championship with Gold Medal Paper, becoming the first ever to win Sporting Nationals using Federal ammo.
2021: Amber English and Vincent Hancock both won gold medals at the 2021 Summer Olympics in Tokyo shooting Federal Gold Medal shotshells.
2021: The Federal High Over All competition load is introduced.
Federal is one of the last makers of paper shotshells in the world and the only American producer of paper hulls. Plastic shells have every
possible advantage when it comes to ease and speed of production, but there’s just something about paper shells that shotgunners, particularly competition shooters, still love. They’re made almost exactly as they were in 1922, and on some of the same machines. It all starts with paper strips being fed through winders that make them into base wads. The hulls themselves are wound into tubes about six inches long that are cured to remove humidity, then impregnated with wax in a large, hot kettle. They are next visually inspected and cut to proper length for shell production. This is an arduous process, but the shooter who insists on Gold Medal Grand paper shells when shoot-offs get intense, appreciates the legendary results.
Whether it is the unmistakable performance or the unforgettable smell, the iconic Federal Papers stood the test of time. Since the 1920s introduction, winning performance has been synonymous with this load offering. The line-up was expanded in 2021 to include the ever popular 1oz 1290 FPS loads. Since introduction, this 1oz recipe has been capturing the attention of shooters looking for the ballistic combination of additional velocity in a paper hull.
Thanks to Federal’s long commitment to clay target shooters, we can now get the latest design in shotshell performance with the new HOA lineup. Whether you are a 11/8 oz fan or prefer a 1oz payload, the HOA lineup has what shooters are looking for. In testing and shooting several of these loads, I found the 11/8 oz 1200 FPS to be smooth and pleasant. The 1oz 1250 FPS shells are incredibly smooth and produce excellent performance with less recoil. The 1oz 1290 FPS cartridge is simply the new standard in 1oz performance that has checked all the boxes. This will be a top seller and frankly my personal favorite.
Combined with a newly designed Federal hull, the new “podium” wad produces a recipe that represents an excellent coupling of design and performance. There have been discussions, tests, and even goodhearted debates on what makes a shell produce smooth felt recoil. The new HOA meets both standards while simultaneously crushing targets. Heavy felt recoil is not necessary to produce a quality hit on a target.
We shooters are passionate about clay target shooting. Whether it is a weekend of shooting with family and friends on the back forty, or shooting for Gold at the Olympics, Federal is there for all American shooters and hunters. n
“I’VE BEEN SHOOTING FEDERAL SHELLS FOR SOME 40 YEARS COMPETITIVELY, I HAVE SHOT ALL FLAVORS INCLUDING THE GREAT PAPER LOADS. NOW THIS NEW HOA SHELL I’M VERY IMPRESSED WITH. THIS NEW OFFERING IS A GREAT LINE UP OF DIFFERENT LOADS FOR ALL DISCIPLINES. THIS SHELL COULD POSSIBLY BE THE PINNACLE OF THE FEDERAL LINE UP. I JUST FEEL HUMBLED TO BE PART OF A GREAT ORGANIZATION, THE 100TH YEAR ANNIVERSARY AND A GREAT FAMILY.”
The 128th Indiana State Trapshooting Championships started on July 5th and ran through the 10th at the Indiana Gun Club in Fortville, Indiana. The facilities themselves are always unique as they have varying backgrounds from trees to blue sky to a power plant on their usage of 16 traps—50 per trap. However, Indiana is certainly not limited. They have been known as a family shoot with lots to do and this year didn’t disappoint.
Tuesday’s heat was steaming with brutal heat into the 100s for the Fun Day. It was so hot that they lost trap help and directors and others pitched in to help out. In the Singles the only 100 was broken by Junior shooter Tyler Honnold. He won his category and that left the top class of AA between CW Arnett and Brian Ingle to carry it over into the next event with Arnett pulling out the win. In the Handicap Honnold broke a 97 to win Junior again. The rest of the trophies were divided by category and yardage, as there was no Champion trophy. David Guaresimo, Adam Hart and CW Arnett were high with 96s in the
Doubles event. There were class trophies and Guaresimo came out on top over Arnett for AA, while Hart won Class A outright.
Wednesday was still hot and humid for the Champions’ honor day.
Meaning each event was named after the 2021 Champions. In the Tom Strabavy Singles there were 14 perfect centuries. For residents it came down to Devon Harris and Joseph Summit who broke the next 200 and had to continue to carry over to determine that Harris was the winner. For Non-Resident it took
Honnold another 100 to take Champion. After Champion and runner-up for Resident and Nonresident were decided the rest of the trophies were open, meaning anyone with the high scores could win. Among the perfect scores who won trophies were; Michael Grannan (AA), Mike Williams (A), Bradley Mayberry (his first 100 ever) in C class, Ryan Loveless (Junior Gold) and Robert Phillips (Senior Veteran).
Robert Brown Handicap saw a high score of a 97. Frank Haynes from Illinois and Tom Neal from Indiana, thus both taking Champion trophies.
Tyler Honnold rocked out a 98 in the Scott Cochran Doubles earning him Non-Resident Champion. Michael Gooch was high for Resident with 96.
It was overcast and windy on Thursday which made for pleasant weather. Indiana still has a 200 Singles Class Championship Day. There were ten 100s in the first round and there were 11 100s on the back half, including one from Tomas Martinez who had his first 100 ever. Michael Blair was the only Non-Resident to break both of them together earning him Champion with 200. Devon Harris and Joseph Summitt both broke them for Residents and it was carried over into the Championship Singles where Harris won.
The Dave Wade-President’s Handicap began in the late afternoon and Nathaniel Summit, Mike Williams, Ryan Loveless, and Anna Rawe broke 97s to lead the
way. This score earned 16 year old Anna her final punch to the 27 yard line. Summit broke a 23 in the shoot-off to force Williams to the runner-up spot for residents. Loveless and Rawe went at it too, both breaking 23 in the first round of the shoot-off, but Loveless earned the Champion spot with 24 in the next, making Rawe the Lady 1 winner.
Thunderstorms were predicted all day on Thursday and the morning began with a light rain, and then held off while Chase Horton broke 98, as did Reece Myers from Indiana both earning them Champion trophies in the ITA Hall of Fame Handicap.
Horton’s day kept getting better as he broke the only 100 on the grounds in the Ed Voliva Memorial Doubles Class Championship. Ed Budrea had the only 99 for Residents to earn him the Champion trophy.
After the shooting there was a Hall of Fame & 2021 All-State Team Ceremony. Phil R. Miller and Tom Kleyla were the inductees this year. Indiana always honors the women behind the scenes that make the shoot so successful: Michelle Mueller, Desira Fesler, Chrissy Byrd, and Deidre Barnett. They did the shoot-offs and then they had their
Miss and Out shoot. Competitors shot two-27 yard targets, one 30 yard, and one from about 40 yards. Then they took it to the porch. There, they drew numbers for the shooting order. Three shooters made it that far and they each fired one shot from the porch, but they all missed. They did it again with the same results. Then in the next round, Ronette Brumfield was the only one who broke the target and it happened to be the green money bird which earned her extra cash. David E. Guerisimo and Bryan Nemec split second/third spoils.
Saturday’s weather turned beautiful with 80° weather and partly cloudy. There were seven 100 straights on the first round. Devon Harris had bought a barrel for a model 12, then put together the rest of the gun around it. He played around with it all winter and never had 100 until he came to the Indiana State Shoot where he ran all of them never missing a Singles target and earning himself the championship title. Austin Jacob and Keith Ditto each broke 199 for Non-Residents, they decided to carry over into the Doubles on Sunday to determine the winner and Jacob won.
Saturday night was a chicken dinner sponsored by Michael
Gooch. After the shoot-offs they had a corn hole tournament organized by Chrissy Byrd. There were 40 competitors, but just as many spectators were there enjoying the competition and the fun atmosphere.
Sunday’s State Doubles Championship saw some wind keeping the scores down. However, JM Perrill from Ohio broke the only 99 for Non-Resident Champion. The residents had to shoot-off. Michael Gooch, Devon Harris, and CW Arnett each broke scores of 96 and
went to the shoot-off where Arnett went out in the first round to take the AA Champion. Gooch and Harris not only tied on the first round with 19s, but did it again on the second. In the third round Gooch posted a perfect 20 to take Champion and Harris was the runner-up.
Between the events the ITA drew names for $250 each donated by the Voliva Family and Fred Hackett. The entries were determined by each event you shot. Names drawn were Robert Bowers, Don Hoffman, Tom Kingsley, and Mike McGee.

The Minnesota StateTrapshooting tournament was held at Alexandria Shooting Park, Alexandria, MN. One thing was for sure, the interstate had not moved from in front of the trap line view. Uniqueness is what makes shooting different clubs so much fun. Adding to the normal distractions lets add trains, a helicopter, automobiles and farm tractors which make for a challenge. Still, it is the same orange target crush game. The club is located in upper Minnesota in Alexandria facing north directly at I-94. The range started out with a single trap field and a camper and has grown, over the years, to 20 trap fields and 146 campsites along with a banquet hall.
MTA Youth Program day consisting of Minnesota full-time students was a success starting out the day shooting Singles. The Event 1 Warm Up Singles was Sponsored by Grand Rapids Gun Club, Anonymous & Owatonna Gun Club and the overcast clouds made for a pleasant day of trap shooting for the 45 shooters.
Event 2 was the Warm Up Handicap and it was sponsored by Randy Jones, the Minneapolis Gun
Club and the Winona Sportsmen’s Club. Eric Munson was the high gun with the lone 99.
Event 3, the Warm Up Doubles was sponsored by Bob & Annie Munson, and Monticello Sportsmen’s Club. Cole Henning had the only 100 straight on the grounds for the Junior trophy.
Hunter Brown (last year Singles Champion with 200) Singles was sponsored by Alexandria Shooting
Park and there were 218 shooters. The day began with overcast skies, but ended with sunshine. The nice day proved to help the 13 resident and Non-Resident shooters shoot 100s.
The Ross Larson Handicap was sponsored by Alexandria Shooting Park Event 5 and John Kelly was the Champion with 99. Gunnar Gens also had 99 to win Junior Gold. A funny thing that happened as I was watching President Matt Bickell and fellow squad mate Denny Steinhause shoot. Denny decided to shoot not just one of Matt’s targets, but two of them as Matt had a perfect score going into the third round. Of course Denny felt bad and apologized to Matt saying “I have never done that before.”
The Scott Gens Doubles, Sponsored by Wille Transport had 184 shooters competing for the top trophy. In the end there were two 100s on the board. Jim Lambert won AA and Dean Neumann the
Veteran award. At one point while I was shooting the Doubles, low and behold, a farm tractor with a sprayer attached decided he needed to spray the field about 150 yards out in front of the trap houses. At one point he was going forward then reversed and turned to end up facing me as I was ready to shoot. In this visual there was a tractor, a power pole and a red semi truck for distractions. As if this game was not already difficult enough.
On this sunny but muggy day the Class Singles Championship, sponsored by White Flyer was a success with 264 shooters with eight scores of Resident 100s and seven Non-Resident 100s shot.
The President’s Handicap, sponsored by Shamrock Leathers had 251 entries. Curtis Peterson had the only 99, missing in the second house to win Champion. There were
nine scores of 98 right behind Peterson.
With memories of this shooter, the Neil Winston Memorial Class Doubles Championship, sponsored by Recob’s Target Shop, was attended by 198 trophy seekers. Congrats to 100s shot by Junior Gold Resident shooter Jack Knaus and Non-Resident Patrick Lamont.
There were 270 shooters in Event 10, the Minnesota Memorial Handicap sponsored by The Minneapolis Gun Club. Resident champion John Kelly and Junior winner Abigail Malecha shot the high scores of 97.
The Minnesota Doubles Championship had 338 shooters. Gunnar Gens shot the only perfect score by a resident to win the championship outright. NonResident Sandra Jo Jack shot her first 100 to win the Non-Resident Champion title. Nick Kubash was happy to hit his 25,000 Doubles target.
In the evening following the events the Hall of Fame Induction and Shooter Recognition Banquet
was held in the club house. The meal for the dinner was sponsored by Buffalo Gun Club, Midwest Garage Door and Bob Schultz/ Target Shotguns. 2021 State Team members, state shoot champions, Minnesota All-Americans, Grand winners and Target Attainment were announced, as well as perfect attendance by Bob and Lou Ann Munson for 50 years and Richard Berger for 60. Following, the Hall of Fame Induction of Charles “Chuck” Eckstein by Wally Selstad. Charles said, “ thanks for the honor and to his wife especially. I have made a lot of friends in this great game and it’s great to accept this honor. I am speechless.” Having 50+ years in the sport and now at the age of 85, Chuck has won numerous trophies.
Randy Cook, also inducted into the Hall of Fame, is no stranger to the Minnesota game. First he
thanked all that attended the event and was very humble to receive the award. “My picture will be hung in the men’s bathroom because there is no more wall space in the hall. I am here because of all of you.” Randy is known to shoot 200s in Singles and has shot off at the 2019 Grand American with a 200 to win Veteran after 543 rounds.
The Singles Championship was sponsored by the Del-Tone Shooting Range and 338 shooters participated. The shoot-off saw Leo Brand (16 years young) go three rounds to claim the Singles Championship trophy against Luke Kalina and Nick Kubasch after the trio had smashed 200s in the event. Leo is not a stranger to winning impressive titles as he was a Sub-Junior Champion in HAA at the Grand American. The excitement for him now is to have the “gold ring” that is awarded once in a lifetime to come in the mail. Luke Kalina was the runner-up and was happy to have shot his first 200 straight which bested his previous high score of 198. Nick Kubasch won the third place trophy. Veteran Champion with a 200 was Randy Cook. Non-Resident champion Dagen Voigman shot the lone 200 for the Championship trophy.
The evening weather was perfect for the trap line to be full of spectators watching the Handicap shoot-off. Kallista Roers, a Lady I shooter broke 98 to win the Minnesota Handicap Championship Sponsored by Alex Power Equipment & Kubota Tractor Corp in a one round shoot-off with seven
other shooters. She has been shooting for ten years and is only 20 years old. Getting her to this win was her Browning Cynergy unsingle combo. Kallista is the first female to win the Handicap championship at Alexandria. Words from this Champion— she, “likes to intimidate the boys.” The runner-up winner was Tony Sarenpa. Jack Knaus and Brandon Heitz both shot 98s in the event and after the shoot-off Heitz was the Junior Gold winner. Artie Gustafson, Carson Cummings and Cole Henning broke 99s and after the shoot-off Gustafson was the Champion, Henning took the Junior trophy and Cummings was the Junior Gold winner on the Non-Resident side of things.
The High All Around saw two scores of 393x400 at the top of the leaderboard. A shoot-off between Nick Kubasch and Ben Dietz was required and Kubasch ended as the Champion trophy with Dietz taking the runner-up trophy. Missing only five targets in the Non-Resident division, Dagen Voigtman won the title.
Collecting the resident 1100 target High Over All event outright was John Kelly with a fantastic total of 1076x1100. Runner-up, Nick Kubasch was not far behind with a score of 1071. All classes and categories were won outright with no shoot-offs. HOA Non-Residents completed a week of 1100 targets with Ryan Glow 1076 claiming
Champion and Pat Lamont also with 1076 winning the runner-up award after the shoot-off.

With American, state and team flags flying, more than 3,000 youth shooters from 37 states gathered at the Cardinal Shooting Center in Marengo, Ohio to compete in the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) National Championships.
The SCTP National Championships were held July 4 through 16 and shooters from the fifth grade through college competed in a number of shotgun sports including Trap, Skeet, Sporting Clays and 5-Stand. Trapshooting competitions at the event included American trap Singles, Handicap and Doubles; as well as Olympic Bunker Trap.
The event attracted thousands of youth shooters, parents, grandparents and other spectators. It really is a sight to see. As with other youth sports, the team members wear custom made shirts (and shooting vests) with their names imprinted or embroidered on them along with their team name
or logo and the names/logos of their sponsors. Some of the colorful team shirts rival those worn by NASCAR drivers or Bassmaster anglers. Many of the teams fly their team logos on custom flags from their ATVs or golf carts along with state and American flags.
The SCTP was developed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) in conjunction with the firearms industry and shotgun shooting governing bodies. It is now governed by the Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation (SSSF) to provide team participation to youth in the shotgun shooting sports.
The SCTP program is the entryway for students who want to compete on the Olympic shooting team. In fact, several of the
members of Team USA at the Tokyo Olympics (held in 2021), were alumni of the SCTP program. Their goal is “to introduce youth shooting sports to as many as possible, helping them use sports to develop and grow.”
Tom Davis, SSSF Communications Manager, said that registration for the SCTP National Championships broke records this year. “Last year we set the record for the largest clay target shoot in Cardinal Center history,”
he said.
“Even though we saw higher gas prices and higher prices for other things that could affect participation, we are up compared to last year,” he added.
Not only can these kids shoot, they really know how to have fun! They are serious and focused when they are on the line, but you can tell that they enjoy the competition as well as the camaraderie of the sport. When they are not competing, they can be found shooting a fun competition like flurry; trying out a new shotgun on the practice trap; or shopping on vendor row.
The vendor buildings at the Cardinal Center were open throughout the event as many manufacturers see this as an opportunity to support the youth shooters and to promote their products to thousands of potential buyers. Several of the shotgun manufacturers even bring their gunsmiths to the event so that they can service competitor’s guns for them.
The Cardinal Center has the largest trapshooting facility in the state of Ohio with a 52 house state of the art trap line. The SCTP National Trapshooting Championship is a registered ATA event.
SCTP shooters are classified in several age divisions: Rookie (5th grade and under); Intermediate/ Entry Level (grades 6 to 8 in their first year); Intermediate/Advanced (grades 7 and 8); Junior Varsity (grades 9 to 12 in their first year); Varsity (grades 10 to 12); and, Collegiate. Both individual and team awards are presented to the youth shooters in each Division.
The National Championships opened on July 4th with the international shooting disciplines. Practice and training sessions were held the first few days. The Bunker Trap competition was held from Friday, July 8 through Sunday, July 10.
With financial support from the SSSF, the Potterfield Family and Promatic Company, bunker trap fields were constructed at the Cardinal Center over the past few years. Shooters at the nationals have an opportunity to win a spot on the SCTP International Team on the pathway to trying out for the Olympic shooting team.
Bunker trap is a 125-target event and teams consist of three shooters. There were three divisions in the Bunker Trap competition:
Intermediate, Senior and Collegiate.

The SCTP National Championships continue to grow each year and plans are already underway for the 2023 event, which will also be held at the Cardinal Shooting Center in July. n
For the second year in a row the Montana State Shoot was held at the Great Falls Trap and Skeet Club just outside of Great Falls, MT. With fourteen trap fields, 60 RV spots and a good sized clubhouse the venue was definitely up to the task as shooters from fifteen different states and Canadian provinces arrived at the club to throw lead. The club staff as well as the Montana State Trapshooting Association directors were great hosts and made everyone feel at home in Big Sky country.
Day one of this year’s State Shoot was a warm up day with a 300 target program that began with 100 Singles targets. Four NonResident shooters managed to break perfect scores in Event 1, with Wyoming shooter Callahan Healy finishing as the out-of-state champion. Dan Vogel broke 99 to take the in-state honors.
Next up was the Event 2 Opening Day Handicap and Wayne Fischer broke 95 to lead the way for the Montana shooters. Ray Collins (AS) had a 97 to earn the NonResident trophy.
The final event of the day was
in-state winner, while Sean Hawley had a 98 to win the Non-Resident trophy.
The High Over All targets began with Thursday’s Event 4 Budweiser Singles. There were 157 entries in this event and four perfect scores were shot—two each by in-state and out of state shooters. Wade Smith outlasted Dan Vogel in the carryover to take the Resident champion trophy, with Vogel settling for the Senior Veteran award. Jesse Smith beat fellow Alberta shooter Art Peyton in the carryover to secure the Non-
Resident champion trophy, leaving Peyton with the Veteran prize.
The Budweiser Handicap was next on the program and there were 151 entries. Ronald McConnell (AB) had the high score on the board with 98 to win the NonResident champion trophy, while Ciaran O’Neill broke 97 to secure the top in-state award.

the Opening Day Doubles. Brett Preeshl had a 97 and was the96 and 82 to win the C and D class awards. Alberta shooter Brad Johnson posted a 100 straight to take home the Non-Resident AA prize, while Tanner Becker (SD) carded a 99 to win the Junior Gold category.

Ciaran O’Neill was the runner-up with 96 after A class winner Dale Fisher did not answer the call to the shoot-off. Emi Smith and Jackie Garrigus were the Lady I and Lady II with scores of 93

The 123rd annual Wisconsin State Shoot was held at the WTA home grounds near Nekoosa, WI from July 12th through the 17th. The attendance was only slightly down from last year which, with the price of fuel and shortage of ammunition, is a testament to what a great shoot it is. The weather was mild with light winds and mostly overcast skies for much of the shoot. The facility and the folks that run it are first rate and the target setting was very good as well.
There were three warm up events on Tuesday to get things going and in the first Joe Lehner and Brad Bomkamp each posted 100s to win the top two classes. The Wisconsin State Trapshoot is a great place to go. The fact that they have so many shooters ought to tell you something. If you can, try and make it out there next year, you will be glad you did. n
Gun owners care about the safety, preventing unauthorized access to firearms, bettering communities, helping those in need and conserving wildlife and wild places for generations to come. You won’t hear these positive stories about real gun owners and pro-gun advocates in the mainstream media. In fact, you’re more likely to see insulting messages that try to shun or even shame gun owners due to some heinous acts of criminals. It’s time for gun owners to tell their stories, to show how we’re making a difference, to show that we don’t fit under one identity and to keep others accountable for trying to villainize lawful gun owners. We’re calling on all gun owners to join us.
Cedar Falls Gun Club, home grounds for the Iowa State Trapshooting Association, hosted the 145th Iowa State Shoot July 19th through the 24th. As always the shoot was well run and the target setting was very good. The sweltering temperatures that can come with the Iowa State Shoot were helped by breezy conditions throughout the week, however Saturday’s Singles championship did get pretty hot.
Tuesday was a preliminary day with 300 targets scheduled. In the opening Singles there were two 100 straights shot and George Fountas used his to win the top trophy in AA class, while Kenneth Brandt broke them all to win the Veteran award. Brandt would find himself at the top of the leaderboard in the Handicap event with a 97 to, again capture the Veteran category. In the Doubles Doug Stanek broke the only 100 straight and, you guessed it, he won the Veteran trophy for his efforts. What was going on with the Veterans? Maybe the old saying about how old age and treachery beats youth and daring is true.
Hall of Fame Day, as it is known at the Iowa State Shoot was on Wednesday and there were three events on the schedule which also marked the beginning of the High Over All competition. In the Event 4 Singles there were five perfect scores turned in with three coming from resident shooters. When the carryover dust settled Bradley Scheibe had added another 100 straight to his total to claim the champion’s trophy. J. Ellwanger (NE) needed one extra round to win the Non-Resident trophy over fellow Nebraska shooter Tyler Marshall who ended up winning Sub Junior.
The Hall of Fame Handicap was sponsored by Sunset Brokerage and Breydon Paxson broke 96 to earn the top prize among the Iowa shooters. Gavin Kuck (NE) and Bernie Merchlewitz (SD) both broke 98s and in the shoot-off Kuck added a 23 and then a 25 to win the champion’s trophy. Merchlewitz
finished as the 27 yard winner.
The last event of the day was the HOF Doubles and Mason Moore took the top spot with the lone 98 amongst in-state shooters. Wyatt Debrie (NE) broke 99 of his targets to claim Non-Resident champion.
Event 7 was the President’s Handicap and Breydon Paxson led the field by two targets with his 100 straight from the 27 yard line. Brad Pollard broke a 98 from 19 yards to secure the runner-up trophy and Jenna Smith was the top Lady I shooter with the score of 97. Levi Mills also broke a 97 to capture the Junior Gold trophy. Jeff Vollmar (WI) broke a 98 to win Non-Resident champion, while Richard Marshall Jr and Eric Munson each broke 97 to tie for the runner-up trophy. Marshall broke 24 in the overtime round to secure the second spot and Munson finished as the 27 yard winner.
There were 17 perfect scores

turned in for the Hawkeye Singles. Breydon Paxson finished as the event champion after a lengthy carryover with Junior Gold winner Kyle Wilkins. Bradley Scheibe finished as the runner-up after his 24 in the first round of the carryover. Dagen Voigtman (NE) broke a 100 straight and then had a long carryover before finally winning the Non-Resident trophy in the 12th round. Ryan Glow (NE) finished as the runner-up. The last event of the day was the Class Singles and there were 21 centuries shot amongst the 305 entries. In the end Evan Ingalls needed an extra 100 in the carryover to claim the AAA class trophy. Justin Venner had the lone 100 in AA class, while Dave Hannerman and Craig Carter each had the only 99s in A and B classes.
Andrew Weber and David Burma shot scores of 98 and 97 to win the C and D class trophies. Richard Marshall Jr and David Hull (MO) broke 100s to win the Non-Resident AAA and AA prizes.
The first event of the day on Friday was the Class Doubles. There were 312 entries in the event and despite overcast skies and some tricky light conditions four shooters managed
to break all of the targets. Cole Henning, David Bessine and Raylee Bishop all broke 100s on the resident side of things and each was awarded their category trophies. Bishop, the Lady I award, Henning and Bessine the Junior and Veteran prizes. AAA and AA classes went to Marcus Draves Justin Venner with scores of 99, while Doug Stanek and Noah Seelye nailed down the A and B classes with 98s. Dan Cain broke a 97 to lead C class shooters and Randy Strauss had a 92 to win D class. Sean Hawley (UT) broke 100 straight to win the Non-Resident AAA class trophy.
The Iowa State Doubles Championship was the next event of the day and Cole Henning, Chayden Wright and James Roberts all had 100 straights. Henning and Wright each broke 20 on the first shoot-off round and Roberts dropped out and took runner-up in the event. Wright and Henning each ran the second round, but in the third Wright let one get away and Henning finished as the Champion with Wright taking Junior Gold. Raylee Bishop broke 98 to win the Lady I crown and Shelly Heitner had

Dan Cain and Evan Elder each broke scores of 99 in the Preliminary Handicap. Elder broke a 24 in the shoot-off to claim the top prize, while Cain finished as the Senior Veteran champ. Hunter Strong was the runner-up with 97 and Garrett Woosley broke a 98 to win the Sub Junior trophy. Ian Lawrence (IL) and David Deitch (MO) each broke scores of 99 on the Non-Resident side of things, with Lawrence taking Champion and Deitch electing to forgo the shoot-off and take the Sub Veteran trophy instead.
The main Singles were shot on the hottest day of the week. With a
heat index of 105 degrees the only saving grace was a slight breeze that helped to cool shooters just a bit. Still there were two in-state and two out of state shooters that were able to break all 200 targets in the event. Raylee Bishop and Scott Woosley went to the shoot-off with the state title on the line. Bishop ran the first round and Woosley did not, making her Iowa’s first woman to ever win the open state Singles championship. Woosley finished as the runner-up, while Sarah Jordan and Shelly Heitner broke 196 and 199 to win the Lady I and Lady II titles. The Sub Junior, Junior and Junior Gold categories were all won with scores of 199, but Hunter

Strong had the easiest time of it as his score was by itself in Sub Junior. Cole Henning and Breyden Paxson each needed an additional 225 straight to win their Junior and Junior Gold trophies. Kevin Nelson and Dale Stockdale both broke 199s to win the Sub Veteran and Veteran awards, while Dan Cain had a 198 to pace the Senior Veterans. Dan Haag, the Wisconsin Singles champion from the previous week broke another 200 straight and then won the flip with Scott Gens (MN) who ended up as the Sub Veteran winner.
The final event of the week was the Iowa State Handicap Championship and the weather could not have been better for it. With temperatures in the low 80s and only a slight breeze, it was a great way to wrap up the shoot. Three residents broke scores of 98 to top the leaderboard at the end of the day. Dustin Nehring, Cole Harms and Bradley Scheibe each had to shoot-off on seperate fields due to yardage differences. After the first round Scheibe was declared the winner of this year’s championship. Nehring and Harms needed to shoot an additional round to decide the Junior category champion and runner-up, with Nehring having the upper hand at the end. Dillon Hanneman had a 97 to secure the Runner-up trophy, while Darren Horton and Travis Wiklander broke 96s and finished in the third and fourth place positions. Bradley Gray and Joe Wasson shot off with 95s for the final two spots and in the end it was Gray in fifth and Wasson in sixth. Ian Lawrence broke 98 to earn the Non-Resident champion’s trophy.
Kolton Manning turned in a 392x400 to win the Resident High All Around title by one bird over Junior Champion Abram Lorence. The High Over All championship was won by Breydon Paxson who shot 1163x1200 six targets ahead of Runner-up Kolton Manning. Dagen Voigtman (NE) broke 395 in the HAA to win the Non-Resident trophy and Sean Hawley had a 1078 to lead the out-of-state field in the HOA. n
