The 108th North Carolina State Trapshooting Championships were held at the North Carolina homegrounds in Bostic, North Carolina June 9 -13, back on schedule after having to be rescheduled last year due to
COVIS-19. As shooting starts to get back to what might be the new normal, 280 shooters from 15 different states were in attendance to shoot the program. This year posted some of the highest scores seen.
PRELIMINARY DAY
Wednesday Event 1 Singles kicked off the week with sunny North Carolina weather. 101 shooters in the event was an increase over last year, three posting 100 straights, and every category winner having a score 95 or above. John White from Alabama bested the pack to start the week off in Singles with 100 and won Champion honors with 25x25 in the shoot-off with Tyler Honnold of Tennessee. The Event 2 Handicap had 98 entries. North Carolina’s own Caleb Dancy took Champion with a 96 from the 23.5 and John White kept his streak going with a 96 from the 27 to take runner-up. Event 3, the last event of the day was the Lewis Wyatt Doubles. 80 shooters participated and Tennessee lady shooter Brook Barnett took Champion with John White finishing out a great day by taking AA with a 92 after a three-way shoot-off.
THURSDAY
Thursday started off with Event 4, the Steve Woods Singles and there were 144 shooters involved. In the end, Logan Denman from Wisconsin emerged as Champion with 100 straight and a shoot-off with Tennessee shooter George Reese. This event was the one to shine with every category being won with no score less than 96. In total, nine shooters had to go into shoot-offs with 99 in order to secure a position. Congratulations to the survivors John White (AA) Alabama, Caleb Mathis (Junior) North Carolina, Ted Carwile (Senior Veteran) Virginia, Michael Burnette (Sub Veteran) Tennessee and George Reese (Veteran) Tennessee.
Event 5, the Jacob Beauchamp Handicapwith 135 shooters, saw Kentucky Robert Dyer take Champion with a 97. Andy Clayton (NC) was runner-up with 95.
The Event 6 Doubles finished off the day with 110 shooters. North Carolina Junior shooter Tyler Cox shot a 95 to take the champion trophy with John White posting a 92 for AA honors.
FRIDAY
Friday started off with the Event 7 Single Class Championship which had 168 entries. Despite some warm North Carolina weather, shooters were able to post some impressive scores with shoot-offs determining

Sunday was a great day to shoot Event 11, the North Carolina Doubles Championship, that kicked off the last day of the North Carolina State Shoot with 152 entries. The top of the leaderboard among North Carolina shooters was Brandon Cantrell taking the champion title with 97, followed by last year’s winner Tyler Cox, who shot 94 to take runner-up. George Reese from Tennessee claimed Out-of -State Champion with a 97 while John Whit posted 95 for the AA title. Event 12, The North Carolina Handicap Championship, followed the Doubles Championship and featured 172 shooters, 94 In-State and 78 Out-of-State. Leading North Carolina shooters from the 20 yard line was Sub Junior shooter Hunter Scott taking the champion position with a 97. The Out-of-State champion was Junior shooter Jonah Wyatt from Tennessee shooting a 95 from the 19.5 yard line

The High All Around championship NON-RES CH JONAH WYATT (TN) 95 winner for North Carolina based on events 10,11,and 12 was Junior Gold shooter Noah Gouge with a 386.
Johnathon Miller took AA with 365. The Non-Resident High All Around Championship was a battle of Sub Veteran shooters, with Ted Carwile (VA) edging out Robert Dyer (KY) both with 385. Noah Gouge won the Resident High Over All title with 946 ahead of Junior Shooter Caleb Mathis. Out-of-State honors went to Robert Dyer who posted 957.
FINISHING UP
This year’s North Carolina State Shoot showed better than expected attendance, despite the challenges associated with the ammunition shortages and fuel shortages in some areas. It’s always a pleasure to visit the North Carolina homegrounds. The targets are good, with new fields being added to accommodate the increases in shooter attendance and make the shooting process more efficient. If you get a chance to visit the North Carolina Trapshooting Association’s homegrounds in Bostic, NC you will be happy to find 15 trap fields with Pat Trap machines and CVRs, as well as 86 RV spots, a large air conditioned clubhouse and plenty of hotels and restaurants nearby. The homegrounds host several large shoots each year including the Dixie Grand, the Southern Zone Shoot, the Hall of Fame shoot, as well as the State shoot.
