THE 2021 GREAT LAKES GRAND
GREAT LAKES GRAND 2021 BY JACQUE SNELLENBERGER
Despite the weather, The Great Lakes Grand’s attendance was up. The Great Lakes is known for its unpredictable weather and this year didn’t disappoint. This year’s GLG was held at the Michigan Trapshooting Association Grounds on May 25-30, 2021.

Tuesday, in the Township Howard Conservation Club Singles, shot over two banks, there were six one hundreds broken—Joe Ramos, Douglas Damron, Carl Chadwell, Breydon Paxson, Dagen Voigtman, and Jim Walkowiak. It took two boxes in the carryover to finalize the results with Chadwell being Champion, Ramos taking AA, Paxson Junior, Voigtman Junior Gold, and Damron Senior Veteran. Everyone breaking the 100 received a trophy, which made everyone happy. The wind picked up a tad in the Reed City Sportsman Club Handicap, but Carl Chadwell topped the field with a 96. Continuing the windy and warm weather for the Birmingham Club Doubles. Jerry Osborne III was high over the field by two over Dagen Voigtman with 196.
Wednesday started with a slight rain and overcast, but they added another bank for the increased shooters. All events were named after 2019 Champions. The overcast skies definitely played a part in the scores, as only four 100s were broken in the Craig Blank Singles—Charles Priddy (Jr Gold), Ian Lawrence, Leo Brand (Sub Jr), and Gary Gerhartz (Senior Vet). Lawrence broke the next hundred in the carryover to win the Champion title and the rest fell back to their respective categories. The Alex Hoffman Handicap had better weather when the rain cleared and Steven Byrd broke 98 edging out the rest of the shooters by one. Breydon Paxson showed off his skills in the Ian Lawrence Doubles with the perfect century.
Weather was good again for Thursday with just a slight wind and sunny weather, but still cold. They shot over four banks, again due to the increase in shooters. Ian Lawrence won the High All Around in 2019, which is how the Event 7 Handicap was named and he just happened to win this event with a 96. He did have to work a bit for it, but he did, with a perfect 25 in the shoot-off over Brian Andrews, who placed runner-up. Carl Chadwell was the Sub Veteran winner and David Moan took the 22-24.5 yardage trophy. In the MTA Singles, Dagen Voigtman, Chase Horton, Ian Lawrence, Jerry Glisson all broke the 100s. After one round into the carryover Voigtman was named Champion. The sun didn’t come out for the Ryan Denes Handicap (2019 High Over All Champion). Ian Lawrence and Chase Horton were high with 96. In the cold twilight, Lawrence once again became victorious with a 24 over Horton’s 22. Horton ended with runner-up honors.

FRIDAY
Starting at around midnight Friday it started to rain and it didn’t stop until about noon on Saturday, which is when the management decided to

start shooting the Lake Huron Class Singles Championship. The temperature may have been 45 degrees, but with the dampness that overcame the field, it felt more like 30s. Chase Horton was the only one to break 99 for AAA honors. The Caesar Guerini Preliminary Handicap came next and it was still cold and windy. Dagen Voigtman was the Champion with his lone high score of 93.
SATURDAY
The Lake Ontario Doubles Class Championship that was supposed to have been shot on Friday, was postponed until Saturday morning. At 8am, 124 shooters were ready to shoot Doubles. The sun at least came out, which helped Ian Lawrence break 99. However, since he’s Junior Gold he had to take his category. Next in line was Jayden Dalton with a 97. Again, since he was a Junior he took his category. Chase Horton and Austin Jacob were next to fight over the top class, AAA. In the carryover, Austin ran the first 50 to snare the Class Championship. Then the Browning Singles Championship started at 10 am with 338 shooters over eight banks. Chet Orick was the only one who broke the first 100, but he backed that up with a 97. This allowed Ian Lawrence who only missed one on his third box of the first hundred to dominate with his 199. This marked an important achievement for Lawrence, as he hadn’t won a Singles Championship until now. Then the MTA threw another event, this time it was the MTA Directors Handicap. It’s not part of the High Over All, but if you wanted to get a handicap in you certainly could. 24 yard shooter, Jarred Carpenter, was high all by himself with a 95.
DOUBLES AND HANDICAP CHAMPIONSHIPS
Sunday was the best day, weather wise, for the 202 shooters who came out to play. Doubles seemed to hang in the air and it showed with three 100 straights leading the way. Austin Jacob, AJ Brenner, and Charles Priddy were all perfect. In the shoot-off Jacob missed one in the first round. Brenner and Priddy went back out for the second round, both missing the second target on the first post. In the third round they cleaned them. Out for the fourth round and Brenner clinched it with a perfect round. Priddy fell back to his category, Junior Gold. He wasn’t unhappy at

In the Winchester Ammunition Handicap Championship, the sun warmed up everything and the scores rose, which the 244 shooters who participated were thankful of. Ian Lawrence, Dagen Voigtman, and Chase Horton rose to the top with 97s. Lawrence dropped four in the first round of the shoot-off, dropping him out. Horton and Voigtman ran them. In the second round, Horton missed a hard left on his last station to give Voigtman the Handicap Championship.
Ian Lawrence had one of the best shoots ever as he garnered the Overall and All Around as well. Despite the weather conditions, the attendance was up by about 20%, as people came from all over knowing that the targets and background would be consistent at the MTA’s home grounds. n
