Arqueóloga especializada en el estudio del arte rupestre del Noroeste y Patagonia. Investigadora del Programa Documentación y Preservación del Arte Rupestre Argentino que lleva adelante el Instituto Nacional de Antropología y Pensamiento Latinoamericano. Presidenta de la Sociedad Argentina de Antropología desde 1993. Directora de la publicación “Relaciones”.

Fue docente de la Universidad de Buenos Aires y dictó seminarios sobre arte prehistórico argentino. Ha publicado más de 50 artículos de la especialidad y editado “Arte Rupestre en la Arqueología Contemporánea” y “Arte en las Rocas”. Dirige la Comisión de Investigación del Arte Rupestre Argentino. Es representante en la Argentina de la SIARB y de la International Federation of Rock Art Organizations (IFRAO).

Destacan sus estudios en sitios arqueológicos del pleistoceno. Ha participado en numerosos congresos y publicado variados artículos en revistas nacionales y extranjeras. Ha dictado numerosos cursos y conferencias a nivel amplio y específico. Docente e investigador de la Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Museo. Universidad Nacional de La Plata.

Archaeologist specialized in the research of human past in Patagonia, specially in Santa Cruz Central Plateau, where he has spent many years carrying out projects with several lines of investigation, particularly rock art, analysis of stone tools, experimental archaeology and the origin of the Patagonian man. His studies in archaeological sites from the Pleistocene stand out. He has participated in several congresses and has published various articles in national and international journals. He has given several courses and lectures at a broad and a specific level. He is a professor and researcher at the School of Natural Sciences and at the Museum, National University of La Plata.

Diana S. Rolandi Arqueóloga. Doctora en Ciencias Naturales de la UNLP. Directora del Instituto Nacional de Antropología y Pensamiento Latinoamericano. Realizó posgrados en administración pública y en política y gestión cultural. Investigadora del CONICET por 30 años. Miembro titular del Comité Argentino del Patrimonio Mundial y del Comité Argentino de Lucha contra el Tráfico Ilícito de Bienes Culturales. Coordinadora de la presentación del sitio Cueva de las Manos para su inclusión en la Lista del Patrimonio Mundial de la UNESCO. Directora del Programa “Documentación y Preservación del Arte Rupestre Argentino”.

Directora de la Revista Cuadernos del INAPL y del Boletín Novedades de Antropología.

Ha publicado trabajos sobre arte rupestre, tejeduría prehispánica y tradicional y libros de narrativa oral e historia del N.O. argentino.

She has graduate studies in public administration, and politics and cultural management. She has been a researcher at the CONICET for 30 years. She is a full member of the Argentine Committee of World Heritage and the Argentine Committee of Fight against the Illegal Traffic of Cultural Goods, and a coordinator of Cueva de las Manos Site presentation for its inclusion in UNESCO’s World Heritage List. PREFACE

El extremo meridional del continente americano, la Patagonia Argentina, podría caracterizarse en términos prehistóricos como el gigantesco coto de caza del confín del Nuevo Mundo. Desde el Río Colorado al Estrecho de Magallanes, desde la Cordillera Andina a la costa Atlántica, este antiquísimo territorio americano fue el escenario mayor de uno de los más reconocidos despliegues de Homo Sapiens capturadores de energía por caza. Un ámbito de soledades esteparias que a lo largo de los milenios ha dado elocuentes muestras arqueológicas de la ocupación humana, en íntima articulación con la fauna, la flora y el medio ambiente. Sociedades humanas sin economías productivas que deambularon por la Patagonia desde hace unos doce mil años y que desembocarían, en los siglos previos a la invasión del europeo, en quienes serían postreros herederos de esas tradiciones culturales: las tribus conocidas como los Tehuelches norteños (gununa ken) y meridionales (aoni ken) los Pehuenches cordilleranos y en tiempos más recientes por los Mapuches.

Las herramientas inventadas por aquellos hombres para consumar esas actividades fueron los arcos, flechas, lanzas y cuchillos facturados en piedra, hueso, valvas de moluscos y madera; usando asimismo la boleadora en tiempos más recientes. Las presas fueron de todo tipo y especie, desde la megafauna plehistocénica de megaterios, caballos prehistóricos, gliptodontes y cánidos extinguidos hace unos 10.000 años, hasta la que actualmente puebla las estepas patagónicas: guanacos adultos y juveniles (chulengos), pumas, huemules, ciervos, liebres patagónicas (maras), ñandúes adultos y juveniles, (charos) y roedores menores. En definitiva, cualquier animal de dos o cuatro patas, incluso aquéllos que la biología los hizo individuos reptantes, que osara transitar por esos desolados y gélidos parajes no escapaba a las

The southernmost end of the American mainland, Argentina’s Patagonia, could well be characterized, in pre-historic terms, as the gigantic game preserve at the ends of the New World. From the Colorado River to the Strait of Magellan, from the Andean Range to the Atlantic Coast, this ancient American territory was the largest scenery of one of the most well known displays of Homo Sapiens energyseizers through hunting. An environment of steppe solitude that has offered –through the millennia– an eloquent archaeological evidence of human occupation in an intimate relationship with the fauna, the flora and the environment. Human societies lacking productive economies who wandered in Patagonia some 12,000 years ago, and who turned out to be –in the centuries prior to the European invasion– the last heirs to those cultural traditions: the tribes known as the northern (gunun a ken) and southern (aoni ken) Tehuelches, the Andean Pehuenches, and in more recent times, the Mapuches.

The tools those men invented to carry out their activities were the bows, arrows, spears, and knives made of stone, bone, mollusk valves, and wood, and in more recent times they used as well the boleadora (hunting sling). Preys were of all kinds and species, from the Pleistocene megafauna of megatheres, prehistoric horses, glyptodonts and canids, –all of which became extinct some 10,000 years ago– to the species that today inhabit the Patagonian steppes: adult and young (chulengos) guanacos, pumas, Andean cervids (huemul), deer, Patagonian hares (maras), adult and young (charos) rheas, and small rodents. In short, any two- or four-legged animal, and even reptiles that dared to wander through those barren and freezing lands did not escape the food needs of the Patagonian native hunter. However, as the archaeological record itself expresses, they did

Estos antiguos patagonienses fueron diestros en confeccionar abrigos, gorros y bolsones de cuero y tuvieron su tiempo para componer obras de arte transportables, como las hachas insignias y placas grabadas.Aunque en este último rubro no creemos que al respecto haya un testimonio más elocuente de su capacidad creativa que la exultante muestra de frescos rupestres que nos han legado y que engalanan este tomo de la trilogía del Corpus Antiquitatum Americanensium. Una obra repleta de magníficas representaciones plásticas que reflejan admirablemente las necesidades materiales, la visión, los deseos y, en definitiva, el universo simbólico-religioso de antiguos afanes.

El arte rupestre es una fina expresión humana para trasmitir y proveer intercambio de información, tanto material como ideológica, por cuanto refleja territorialidades, cotos de caza y por encima de ello el universo mágico-religioso de quienes fueron sus ejecutores. El arte rupestre abre a la vez una vía de transferencia, una forma de comunicación destinada tanto a las generaciones coetáneas como a las posteriores; habitantes o visitantes ocasionales de esos parajes poblados de cuevas y abrigos rocosos usados por los indígenas para vivir y luego convertidos en templos naturales.

La historia de las investigaciones sobre arte parietal indígena del extremo sudamericano se inicia en 1877 con el eximio Francisco P. Moreno, quien en el diario de uno de sus viajes apunta sus ideas sobre las pinturas rupestres de la Patagonia que tanto conoció y amó. Sobre los motivos de manos pintadas dice el Perito: “...las manos pintadas de este último punto son distintas a las que se encuentran en el otro costado del promontorio. Allí parece que la mano indígena, generalmente la izquierda, puesta sobre la roca, ha sido contorneada con la pintura siguiendo la forma de ella; aquí por el contrario, parece que la mano ha sido frotada con la pintura y estampada luego sobre la piedra, donde ha dejado su forma en rojo”.

Más de un siglo y medio ha transcurrido desde esas primeras noticias sobre el arte rupestre patagónico compuesto en sus santuarios naturales: cuevas y abrigos rocosos situados a la vera de profundos barrancos, quebradas y cañadones. Un lapso que no ha

These ancient Patagonian dwellers were skillful at making leather coats, hats and bags, and found time to compose transportable works of art, such as the insignia axes and the engraved panels. However, as regards the latter, we believe there is not a more eloquent testimony of their creative ability than the proud sample of rock art frescoes that they have left us, and that decorate this volume of the Corpus Antiquitatum Americanensium trilogy. A work full of wonderful plastic representations that admirably reflect the material needs, the vision, the desires, and in short, the symbolic-religious universe of ancient art works.

Rock art is a fine human expression to transmit and exchange information, both material and ideological, as it reflects territorialities, game preserves, and above all, the magical religious universe of its creators. Rock art opens, at the same time, a way of transfer, a means of communication meant for both contemporary and future generations, inhabitants or casual visitors to those places full of caves and rocky shelters used by natives to live in, and then transformed into natural temples.

The history of research on native parietal art in the southernmost end of South America began in 1877 with the eminent Francisco P. Moreno, who during one of his journeys wrote down in his logbook his ideas about rock art in Patagonia, a place he loved and knew so well. About the painted hands motifs, he said: “...the painted hands in this last place are different from the ones on the other side of the promontory. There, it seems as if the native hand, generally the left one, had been placed on the rock and outlined with the paint following its shape, leaving a clear imprint; here, on the contrary, it seems as if the hand had been rubbed with the paint and printed afterwards on the stone, where it left its red shape.”

More than a century and a half passed since the world first heard about Patagonian rock art created in its natural sanctuaries –caves and rocky shelters located by the side of deep slopes, valleys and canyons. Time that has not passed in vain, as it has brought about much research carried out by experts.

Thus, we managed to recompose a multifaceted universe of Amerindian images. Representations composed in hues of red, and black, white, blue

La amplia región definida por la cuenca del río Pinturas y los sitios de la altiplanicie central santacruceña se caracterizan por presentar un arte rupestre centrado en la expresión animalística donde el acento está puesto en la figura del guanaco en primer término y con menos énfasis en la del choique y del felino. El huemul, por lo contrario, es una expresión escasísima en estos tempranos momentos del arte rupestre y lo seguirá siendo a lo largo de toda la secuencia del arte patagónico.

Como dijimos el guanaco ha sido el eje de la economía de subsistencia en la Patagonia y el arte rupestre refleja esa importancia. Existe una relación directa entre el nacimiento, reproducción y muerte de este animal y las posibilidades del desarrollo de la existencia humana. Como dice C. Aschero la persistencia de la imagen del guanaco en el arte durante milenios la convierte en la representación más sensible para captar las relaciones entre el hombre y su medio, tanto natural como social32. Este camélido es el común denominador del binomio hombre-animal que integra las “escenas de caza”. Estas expresiones han hecho célebres a las cuevas ubicadas en el sector centro-meridional de la Patagonia, que ya mencionamos, y son de gran interés para esclarecer ciertas prácticas de los desaparecidos cazadores del área.

Las pinturas más antiguas de Cueva de las Manos presentan conjuntos de figuras que dan testimonio de cómo se cazaba el guanaco. Este animal es representado con gran naturalismo y cuidadosa factura y en una variedad de actitudes (Lámina 1). Sobresalen las escenas de alto valor anecdóti-

The large region defined by the Pinturas River basin and the sites in Santa Cruz central high plateau are characterized by rock art focused on animal expression where the stress was first placed on the guanaco figure and less emphatically on the choique and the feline figures. The huemul, on the contrary, was a very rare expression in those early times of rock art, and continued so along all the sequence of Patagonian art.

As we said, the guanaco was the center of the economy of subsistence in Patagonia, and rock art reflects its significance. There is a direct relationship between this animal’s birth, reproduction and death, and the development possibilities of human existence.

According to C. Aschero’s words, the persistence of the guanaco’s image in art for millennia makes it the most sensitive representation to capture the relationships between man and his environment, both natural and social32. This camelid is the common denominator of the man-animal binomial constituting the “hunting scenes”. These expressions have brought fame to the caves located in the Patagonian central southern area already mentioned, and are of great interest to clarify certain practices of the disappeared hunters from the area.

Cueva de las Manos’ oldest paintings present groups of figures that bear witness to the way the guanaco was hunted. This animal is represented with great naturalism and care, and in a series of attitudes (Plate 1). Scenes of great anecdotal value stand out, where animals are chased and surrounded by hunters, trapped and killed with the help of their long and throwing weapons, the latter known as bolas. In those scenes illustrating collective hunting activities, one can see groups of 10 or more individuals attacking twenty or more guanacos. Next to them, there are also scenes of

co en las cuales los animales figuran perseguidos y rodeados por los cazadores, atrapados y muertos con ayuda de sus armas largas y bolas arrojadizas. En aquellas que ilustran actividades de caza colectiva se ven grupos de 10 o más individuos que acometen a una veintena o mayor número de guanacos. Al lado de éstas, existen también escenas de persecución aislada de la presa en la que sólo interviene un cazador (Lámina 2).

Como describe C. Gradin, los artistas han tenido en cuenta la particular configuración de los paneles que sirvieron como soporte para la ejecución de las escenas de caza. Utilizaron tanto el interior de las cavidades rocosas como su exterior. Las representaciones de las actividades cinegéticas alcanzan un extenso desarrollo, abarcando diversos sectores de la superficies rocosas. Son notables algunas siluetas de guanacos en fila, en secuencias lineales horizontales y a veces sinuosas. En estas escenas de caza comunitaria se han contabilizado hasta 40 figuras de guanacos. De tanto en tanto aparece la silueta de un cazador que persigue un animal que ha sido separado del resto de la tropilla y está cerca de alcanzarlo33 (Lámina 3).

El pequeño tamaño del hombre, en comparación con el de la figura del animal, es una constante.

La figura humana se disminuye unas 20 veces de su tamaño natural, mientras que la de los animales sólo se reduce unas 10 veces34. Al igual que en el arte paleolítico europeo, es posible que esta desigualdad exprese la mayor importancia dada a la presa que al cazador. La silueta humana está representada en forma muy esquemática, su posición es de perfil cuando se quiere demostrar que está a la carrera, y de frente, cuando está detenida. Muy pocas veces aparecen con adornos cefálicos y, en los casos en que lo hacen, estos indican el uso de plumas (Lámina 4). Pero a diferencia de lo que ocurre en el Noroeste argentino, donde el arte refleja la importancia dada a la vestimenta - ya que ésta era un indicador del rol de los individuos dentro de la sociedad - en el arte patagónico es extraño cualquier tipo de aditamento a la figura humana, con excepción de las armas. Uno de los casos registrados, si bien de momentos más tardíos a los que nos estamos refiriendo en este acápite, corresponde al sitio Gorra de Vasco que se encuentra en el Parque Nacional Perito Moreno. Es el único ejemplo del arte rupestre patagónico temprano y prácti-

As C. Gradin describes, artists took into account the particular configuration of the panels that served as a surface for executing the hunting scenes. They used both the interior and the exterior of rock caves.

Representations of hunting activities are highly developed, covering several sectors of the rocky surfaces.

Quite remarkable are some guanaco silhouettes which stand in line, in horizontal linear sequences and occasionally in sinuous sequences. In these community hunting scenes 40 guanaco figures have been counted.

Now and then, one can see a hunter’s silhouette chasing and about to capture an animal that has been separated from the rest of the herd33 (Plate 3).

Man’s small size compared to that of the animal figure is a constant.The human figure was reduced around 20 times its natural size, while that of animals was only reduced approximately 10 times34. As with European Paleolithic art, this disparity possibly expresses the greater importance given to the prey than to the hunter.

The human figure was represented in a very schematic way, it was shown from the side when the author wanted to express that the hunter was running, and it was shown facing the front when he was standing.

Only rarely did they wear cephalic ornaments, and when they did, these indicated the use of feathers (Plate 4). However, unlike what happens in the Argentine northwest, where art reflects the importance given to clothes –since they were an indicator of the individuals’ role in society– in Patagonian art it is uncommon to see any kind of accessory in human figures, except weapons. One of the recorded cases, even if it belongs to later times than those we refer to in this section, corresponds to Gorra de Vasco site, located in the Perito Moreno National Park. This is the only example of early Patagonian rock art, and practically of all the sequence where the hunter is drawn with the details of his clothing. He is wearing a plumed ornament on his head and the long robe covering his body and part of his lower extremities suggests the use of a cloak or a fur blanket (quillango) probably similar to the ones still used by the Tehuelches at the beginning of the 20th Century. They were made joining several hides from young guanacos called chulengos. These quillangos were used with the fur facing the interior and the hide, beautifully painted with motifs expressing its owners’ cosmovision, was exhibited so that everybody could see it35 (Plate 5).

There are scenes of human figures that express a high dynamism.We have already talked about scenes related

Lleva un adorno de plumas en la cabeza y la larga vestimenta que cubre su cuerpo y parte de sus extremidades inferiores sugiere el uso de una capa o quillango probablemente semejante a los que aún usaban los tehuelches a principios del siglo XX. Estas se confeccionaban con la unión de varios cueros de guanacos jóvenes llamados chulengos. Se utilizaban con el pelo hacia el interior y el cuero, bellamente pintado con motivos que expresaban la cosmovisión de sus portadores, se exhibía a la vista de todos35 (Lámina 5).

Existen escenas con figuras humanas que expresan un alto dinamismo, ya hablamos de las relacionadas con la caza, donde el hombre interviene en grupo o en forma individual en los diferentes momentos que preceden a la muerte del animal: persecución, rodeo, enlazado y boleado de la presa. Existen otros tipos de escenas que se apartan de la expresión cinegética. Una que se destaca por su dinamismo es la que aparece en Cueva de las Manos, dentro de la penumbra de la cavidad, que muestra un conjunto dinámico de figuras humanas, algunas con el sexo al descubierto, en actitud de danzar36. Otra muy peculiar es la que ilustramos del sitio La Evelina en donde las siluetas de los hombres o mujeres se encuentran encerradas por un contorno lineal como si estuviera representando el lugar (posiblemente la cueva) donde se encuentran (Lámina 6).

En la altiplanicie central de Santa Cruz sobresalen las antiguas escenas de caza de la Cueva 1 de Cerro Tres Tetas. En una de ellas podemos ver a un grupo de cazadores que rodean un guanaco utilizando probablemente un lazo para capturar al animal. Este diseño también aparece representado en las cuevas y reparos de los cañadones de la Estancia La Evelina, localizada no muy lejos de la de San Rafael (Cerro Tres Tetas). En El Ceibo se repiten las escenas dinámicas en donde intervienen guanacos y sus perseguidores, además de negativos de manos y motivos geométricos simples como círculos concéntricos, líneas y puntos.

Como se ha destacado repetidamente en la bibliografía universal, el bestiario, es decir el conjunto de animales que el hombre ha seleccionado para sus expresiones rupestres, dista de ser representativo de la fauna del lugar, las especies elegidas son sólo una parte mínima del conjunto

to hunting, where man, in groups or individually, took part in the different moments preceding the prey’s chasing, surrounding, lassoing and trapping with bolas.

There are other kinds of scenes that drift from the hunting expression. There is one which was found in the darkness of Cueva de las Manos that stands out for its dynamism, and portrays a dynamic group of human figures, the sex of some of whom is explicit, in a dancing attitude36. A very peculiar scene is the one we illustrate from La Evelina site where the male or female silhouettes are enclosed by a linear outline as if it were the place (possibly the cave) in which they were (Plate 6).

In the Santa Cruz central high plateau, the old hunting scenes in Cerro Tres Tetas Cave 1 stand out. In one of them, we can see a group of hunters surrounding a guanaco, probably using a lasso to capture the animal. This design also appears represented in caves and shelters in the canyons of Estancia La Evelina, located not far from Estancia San Rafael (Cerro Tres Tetas). In El Ceibo, dynamic scenes with guanacos and their chasers are also repeatedly found, apart from hands’ negatives and simple geometric motifs such as concentric circles, lines and dots.

As has been repeatedly stressed in universal literature, the bestiary, that is, the group of animals that man chose for his rock art expressions, is far from being representative of the local fauna; the chosen species are just a minute part of the fauna group that coexisted with man. Undoubtedly, the latter only chose those species that were more significant for him and had a greater symbolic content, those related to his means of support, as well as those that were the protagonists of his ceremonial practices.

One of the Patagonian bestiary members was the feline. Although its figure is represented much less frequently than the guanaco’s, its symbolic richness must have been no less important. In El Ceibo Cave 6B an exceptional figure of one of these specimens stands out. It is a polychrome feline representation of just over 1.50m long. The animal is painted in red with its coat spots in black, and is superimposed on three white guanaco figures. Cardich interpreted this painting as a representation of a feline that became extinct some 10,000 years ago37. Although we find it difficult to determine the feline species represented, at least we can assert that we are before an image expressing the importance given to this animal from time immemorial (Plate 7).

faunístico que convivió con el hombre. Es indudable que éste sólo eligió a las especies que le resultaban más significativas y de mayor contenido simbólico, aquellas que estaban relacionadas con su sustento, como también las que eran protagonistas de sus prácticas ceremoniales.

Uno de los integrantes del bestiario patagónico fue el felino. Si bien su figura está representada en un número muy inferior a la del guanaco, su riqueza simbólica no debe de haber sido menor.

En la Cueva 6B de El Ceibo destaca una figura excepcional de uno de estos ejemplares. Se trata de la representación policroma de un felino de poco más de 1,50 m de largo. El animal está pintado en rojo con las manchas de su pelaje en negro y se superpone a tres figuras de guanacos blancos. Cardich interpreta esta pintura como la representación de un felino extinguido hace unos 10.000 años37. Si bien creemos difícil determinar la especie de felino representada sí, al menos, podemos afirmar que estamos ante una imagen que expresa la importancia dada a este animal desde tiempos muy antiguos (Lámina 7).

En la Estancia La Reconquista, a poco más de 50 kilómetros de la anterior, se destaca la Cueva 6, llamada “Los Yaguaretés”. En ella aparecen, entre pinturas de guanacos y de manos, cuatro representaciones de felinos. Jean Marie Franchomme38 subrayó la importancia de este hallazgo ya que se trata del único sitio de toda la Patagonia en donde se concentran tantas imágenes del felino. Las extremidades de los animales se representan a la manera de la impronta que deja la pisada de este felino a su paso, es decir con un círculo mayor en el centro y otros más pequeños que lo rodean.

Encontraremos repetidamente este diseño en el arte rupestre patagónico más tardío pero ya no acompañando a la figura completa del animal sino desintegrándose de esta y surgiendo como una representación en sí misma.

Si bien entramos en el incierto campo de la especulación podemos sugerir que el alto simbolismo expresado en la figura felínica a través del arte rupestre pudo haberse perpetuado como mito a lo largo de la historia patagónica. Resaltó el sabio Florentino Ameghino a fines del siglo XIX: “Los pocos viajeros que han cruzado las regiones patagónicas y han estado en contacto e intimidad con los hospitalarios tehuelches, han tenido oportunidad de oírles hablar de un cuadrúpedo misterioso y corpulento, de terrible aspecto e invulnerable, en cuyo

Jean Marie Franchomme38 stressed the importance of this finding, as it is the only site in all Patagonia where so many feline images are concentrated. The animals’ extremities are represented as the imprint left by this feline’s footprint, that is, with a bigger circle in the center, and others smaller around it.We will repeatedly find this design in later Patagonian rock art, although not accompanying the complete animal figure but breaking up from it and emerging as a representation in itself.

Even if we enter the uncertain field of speculation, we may suggest that the great symbolism in the feline figure through rock art could have perpetuated as a myth throughout Patagonian history. Wise Florentino Ameghino stressed by the end of the 19th Century: “The few travelers who have crossed the Patagonian regions and have been in close contact with the hospitable Tehuelches, have had the chance of hearing them speak of a mysterious and hefty quadruped of terrible appearance, in whose body they say not even the guns’ bullets penetrate. They call it lemisch or “water tiger”, and the mere mention of its name causes them horror; when they are asked for details, they become serious and bow their heads, they turn dumb and avoid answering”39.

As happens in Argentina’s Northwest, the feline figure normally appears together with camelid groups’ representations. Thus, its strong relevance as the most powerful predator is highlighted, as a being that man could not match in ability nor skill, and whose hunting performance he certainly admired. It probably was part of these hunters’ mythology, as possibly happened in the neighbor Pampas region. In these plains, another carnivore –the fox– apparently embodied powerful spirits. Plenty of canines belonging to these animals, which were used as necklaces, bracelets and anklets, were found as part of interment ornaments more than 6,000 years old. As Gustavo Politis suggests, the ethno-historic data about the beliefs of natives from the Paraná River shores point out the mythical character persistence of these animals throughout the Pampas history40.

Several centuries after the appearance of the first paintings, we can observe that the dynamic hunting scenes began to disappear, but the guanaco survived as the main subject in pictorial groups. Around 7,000 BP, the lively hunting scenes were replaced by groups of guanacos that were out of proportion to the live
