COMMUNICATIONS PORTFOLIO

CLAUDIA COOMBE-TENNANT

ABOUT ME

Hello, I’m Claudia Coombe-Tennant, a third-year Professional Communications student majoring in journalism and minoring in cinema studies at RMIT University. I chose RMIT for its renowned Media and Communications school and its focus on industry-based, practical learning that bridges the gap between theory and real-world application.

Professional Communications was my first preference for undergraduate study because of its broad scope across Media, Journalism, Advertising, and PR. From a young age, I’ve been drawn to the power of storytelling whether to inform, persuade, entertain, or explore I love diving deep into a kaleidoscope of topics, fuelled by my curiosity and appreciation for the expansive power of knowledge and understanding

Over the past five years, my passion for communication has grown through diverse experiences In high school, I discovered a love for storytelling through Media and Literature I experimented with various mediums, from photojournalism and short films to creating a zine that captured the essence of Melbourne’s landmarks in black-and-white film Collaborating with classmates, I co-created a collection of fiction short stories inspired by Ceridwen Dovey’s Only the Animals, which further solidified my love for creative and narrative-driven projects

Since then, I’ve immersed myself in diverse forms of media and honed my skills in interdisciplinary communications, with a particular focus on journalism I’ve developed a sharp eye for detail, a curiosity for cultural trends, and an ability

to connect with audiences through compelling and thoughtful narratives

At university, I’ve continued to build on these foundations through hands-on projects and interdisciplinary coursework. I’ve worked on investigative journalism pieces, developed multimedia content, and collaborated with peers to create compelling narratives across various platforms These experiences have deepened my understanding of storytelling and its potential to engage, inform, and inspire

I aim to continue developing my storytelling and communication skills, blending my passions for journalism and cinema to create impactful, meaningful content that resonates with audiences and shapes the broader media landscape

COMM2147: PROFESSIONAL WRITING

Note: This content writing was produced for Stardust Studios, a small jewellery business as a part of an assignment set by the professor

In an effort to help a small jewellery company increase its online engagement, I collaborated on various digital and inperson strategies. Focusing on platforms like Instagram and TikTok, I developed content that showcased the brand’s unique pieces and personality To further enhance the brand's presence, I contributed to the design of business cards that complemented the jewellery’s aesthetic Additionally, I visited the company’s pop-up stall, capturing photos that highlighted both the products and the vibrant atmosphere of the event These efforts were aimed at strengthening the company’s connection with its audience and increasing visibility across key platforms

Purpose

RMIT has three impressive public art spaces at their disposal. Unfortunately, these galleries appear intimidating or inaccessible to the RMIT community. Both the galleries and the artists showing require an audience to thrive. The infrastructure has been established but the galleries need to be adequately promoted and repositioned in the RMIT ecosystem.

Aim

Through our public art trail and accompanying grassroots campaign, we want students during O-week and beyond to not only be aware of the galleries but to feel comfortable entering them. It is essential we build engagement with the galleries and the work displayed because it will in turn create a sense of community among patrons.

Communication Objectives

The overall objective of The Artful Chatter Collective’s communication initiative is to increase awareness for all three of RMIT’s unique galleries and subsequently draw more people through their doors The project is to be implemented in time for orientation week which is from the 24-28 February next year and if successful, throughout the year as per the brief

The following are our project’s goals:

- Increase attendance to RMIT galleries by 20% during O-week.

- Increase RMIT student awareness of all three galleries by 30%.

- Patronage to RMIT galleries to increase by 10% over the entire 2025.

FICTION

A Little Birdy Told Me: Stories Inspired by Ceridwen Dovey

In 2022, I had the privilege of collaborating with my Year 12 Literature classmates to co-create a collection of short stories inspired by Ceridwen Dovey’s Only the Animals This project not only honed my creative writing skills but also deepened my appreciation for narrative-driven work Working within a team to explore complex themes and craft unique fictional narratives was an incredibly enriching experience, allowing me to contribute to a collaborative literary effort that still fuels my passion for storytelling today

JOURNALISM

STUDENT SAMPLE INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM

Context

With natural snowfall becoming increasingly unreliable due to climate change, ski resorts across Australia are turning to artificial snow to keep the slopes open But what goes into creating a winter wonderland when nature doesn’t deliver? And more importantly what are the hidden costs of this technological solution?

My story begs to ask whether the environmental impact of snowmaking is justified by the economic benefits to ski resorts and local communities

Through this deep dive into the costs of artificial snowmaking, I aim to shine light on the ethical dilemmas surrounding snowmaking dependency and climate change denial to question whether Australia’s winter solution is ultimately sustainable.
