Holiday

Happiness

Happiness comes in all shapes and sizes during the holiday season. The delicious sprinkles on your favorite sugar cookies, the little box with a shiny new pair of earrings, or maybe it’s the warm wishes from your family in a small card that really brings you joy. No matter what gets you in the holiday spirit, it is always a joyous, yet hectic season filled with parties, gifts, and of course family.

How do you balance it all as a couple? Oftentimes, hectic schedules mean stress and less focus on your relationship. A few simple gestures can make all the difference in your holiday experience with your significant other.

One way to really stay connected is to make your gift shopping list together. Decide on a budget, and stick to it. Unnecessary arguing about overspending can occur when guidelines are not discussed prior to paying at the check-out counter.

Also, make the gifts you give to each other memorable, not expensive. It’s not about who can spend more money or get the most glitzy gift. Dig deep and think of one thing that you know will rock their world, and make it happen.

Let’s not forget the big elephant that’s always in the room, and that is the monumental decision of which parents’ house you will be at this holiday.

Many couples have extended family, and it is twice as hard to make the rounds if they are spread out across the state or even the country.

Sometimes avoiding one side of the family can lead to hurt feelings and resentment. Balancing time with your extended family is always a part of a relationship, and communicating early on about family plans can make the holiday a much more enjoyable time.

Every season, there is always ‘The List’. Nope, it’s not Santa’s list. But the honey-do list that can only get longer if it’s not tackled in a timely manner.

What’s on this list? For starters, you need to dig out the lights and ornaments still sitting in storage, sign all the holiday cards, and there are cookies and treats to be baked! Your household to-do list always gets longer during this season, and it’s a great idea to split the work in half. That way more stress won’t be put on one person to get all the little tasks done.

Remember, be merry and have a happy holiday season with your loved ones. Enjoy each other, cherish the moments, and tomorrow the memories will be priceless.

What You Should Know About Head Start and Early Head Start

hat is Head Start? Head Start is a national program that promotes school readiness by enhancing the social and cognitive development of children through the provision of educational, health, nutritional, social and other services to enrolled children and families. Region 7 Education Service Center offers the Head Start program through schools districts and daycare centers in the following counties: Anderson, Cherokee, Gregg, Harrison, Henderson, Marion, Rusk, Smith, Panola, Upshur, Van Zandt and Wood. We also offer an Early Head Start program in Gregg and Harrison County for children ages 0 to 3 years old. Early Head Start serves pregnant moms in Longview. Following is a brief summary of the services we provide: Education Services: Every child is offered a variety of learning experiences designed to foster physical, social, emotional, and cognitive growth, and to develop an appreciation for ethnic, cultural, and linguistic diversity. Early Childhood Education: In addition to serving 3 and 4 year olds, the program also serves pregnant women and children from birth to age 3. Family Services: Staff members meet with families and help them set and reach goals to improve their conditions and quality of life. Health Services: Particular attention is given to health issues which include immunizations, speech and language, hearing, vision, and dental health. Childhood obesity that

impacts their learning processes is also addressed.

Disability Services: Children with disabilities are integrated from the beginning into Head Start’s education program, learning side by side with other children. Mental Health Services: Children and parents participate with our staff that promotes positive mental health and personal growth. Nutrition Services: A Registered Dietician counsels parents of children identified at risk for obesity, anemia and other nutritional issues. Parent Involvement: Head Start empowers parents to be their child’s first teacher, develop skills in decision making, group process, and leadership, join local parent committees and the Head Start Policy Council, volunteer in the classroom, and support in training and educational opportunities.

Family Literacy: Children are exposed to reading.

Families are encouraged to improve their literacy skills, obtain adult basic education, and make their homes a place where reading is a part of everyday life.

he next time you see a school bus, you may want to give the drivers, operators, manufacturers, administrators, legislators and everyone in the school transportation industry a wave of thanks for keeping our children safe.

Today’s school buses include warning lights, crossing arms, reflective devices, rollover protection, additional mirrors that allow drivers to see immediately in front of the bus, multiple emergency exits and many other safety features to prevent accidents and to protect children on board in case of a crash.

To make school buses even safer, the American School Bus Council offers these tips for school bus riders: Be alert to traffic. Check both ways for cars before stepping off the bus.

Make eye contact with the bus driver, and wait for the bus driver’s signal before crossing the street.

Walk in front of the bus; never walk behind the bus to cross the street.

While waiting for the bus, stay in a safe place away from the street.

Before leaving the sidewalk, look for the flashing red lights.

Never go under the bus to retrieve something you’ve dropped.

Playing Can Help Combat Childhood Obesity

P

lay is in peril. Play is quickly disappearing from our children’s lives, and it’s taking a toll on the health and happiness of our children, our families and our communities. Today, children spend less time playing outdoors than those in any other generation, spending instead an average of 7.5 hours a day in front of a screen.

Lack of play is directly linked to increased childhood obesity-one of the main issues facing the younger generation today. The White House Childhood Obesity Task Force recently issued a report with recommendations on how to “solve the problem of childhood obesity within a generation.” Physical activity and play were cited as

key elements. Lack of play is also linked to a decrease in creativity, imagination, problem-solving skills, resiliency and an increase in classroom behavior problems.

Play Matters!

“Play is inherently active and is a long-term, preventative measure for obesity. Kids who play are less likely to develop obesity-related problems. Play is also a critical factor for improving attention, attitudes, creativity, memory and so many other vital learning skills,” said Darell Hammond, CEO and Co-Founder of KaBOOM!, the national nonprofit leading the movement to save play. “We want to restore a culture of play so that playing and being active are a natu-

ral part of our lives.”

“Organizations such as KaBOOM! are necessary not just to the health of our children, but to the health of the entire nation,” said first lady Michelle Obama in a speech at a KaBOOM! playground.

Protecting Children From Cyber Bullying And Other Internet Hazards

arents now have a new ally in protecting their children from cyber bullying, online predators and exposure to inappropriate online content.

According to a recent survey commissioned by the U.S. Department of Justice, cyber bullying and exposure to cyber predators are at an alltime high. More than 43 percent of teenagers report being victims of cyber bullying. In those cases, nine out of 10 victims knew the person or persons who were bullying them, and only 10 percent ever told their parents what was going on.

Fortunately, new technology can help arm parents and administrators against such threats, while helping to regulate and monitor overall Internet usage. The powerful new software can help protect children from cyber bullying, cyber predators and exposure to pornography. CyberPatrol Online Protection software allows parents to effectively monitor their child’s behavior, including online chat conversations on several social networks, such as AOL, IM, Facebook and MySpace, as well as their website history.

By activating special alerts for predators, parents are notified when “trigger words” are used in an online chat. The 10

new Cyber Bully Alerts function notifies parents when a potential bully might be acting. Parents are informed about what was said so they can move to address any problems before potentially more serious circumstances ensue.

Further, alerts help protect personal information from being distributed outside the home. Parents can turn on a function that will alert them when specific information is being sent online. For example, if a child tries to send a stranger the family’s address, this function will immediately send an e-mail alert to the parents.

Parents can customize preferences for each member of their household. They may select to filter inappropriate content, block specific websites, monitor and regulate each child’s time spent on the Internet, and provide reports of users that tried to access a designated off-limits site. The option to receive monitoring reports and instant alerts via e-mail and remote access means parents can continue to follow their family’s usage even when they are at work or away from the home.
