Since 1980, Make-A-Wish has granted hundreds of thousands of life-changing wish experiences worldwide. Our vision is to grant the heartfelt wish of every eligible child battling critical illness.

Wishes are catalysts for hope; they are profoundly effective in fueling a child’s drive to defy the odds and push toward tomorrow. Families are reunified, and entire communities are enriched; the positive impact is boundless. It is because of generous donors, dedicated volunteers, and valuable partners in the medical community that each wish becomes a reality.

Make-A-Wish and the El Paso Regional Council are pleased to present to you the 4th Annual Wish Night: The Stars of Make-A-Wish. This year’s fun-filled event will take place on April 2, 2022 at the El Paso Country Club and will feature an exciting live auction, the opportunity to meet and interact with wish kids and live music. Let’s celebrate the power of a wish come true.

Master of Ceremonies & Regional Council Member Rick Cabrera Rick Cabrera has called El Paso home for nearly 20 years. He served as ABC-7’s weekday evening news anchor with Estela Casas from May 2008 through June 2018 before embarking on a new career in June of 2018 when he joined the El Paso office of Hub International Insurance Services.

Rick specializes in employee benefits where he finds creative and strategic ways for companies of all sizes to provide cost effective medical and voluntary benefits.

Rick serves on the regional council for Make-A-Wish and on the board of directors for March of Dimes and the Assistance League of El Paso. He also lends his time and talent to countless other Borderland events. He also still does some work in front of the camera by voicing, writing and editing videos for local nonprofits and for social media.

He has a daughter, Madyn and a son, Andrew.

Featured Wish Kid Brianna We’re excited to introduce our Featured Wish Kid for Wish Night 2022, Brianna Denton!

Brianna, 18, has leukemia and wished to go to Disney World! Near the end of last year, Brianna, her parents and her siblings spent several magical days going on roller coasters, eating delicious food, taking photos with Disney characters and relaxing at the Give Kids the World Village, a special resort at Disney World for children with critical illnesses and their families. The wish was better than she ever could have imagined, and she was grateful for the opportunity.

Now, Brianna is a wish ambassador for Make-A-Wish, and she loves sharing her story with everyone she meets and raising funds for the organization that made such a big difference in her life. Please take a moment to meet Brianna this evening!

The Make-A-Wish Mission is simple: to create life-changing wishes for “our” local children with critical illnesses. Making those wishes come true is not as simple.

Our mission is about spreading seeds, and we brought you here this evening to help us to continue watering those seeds. As we go through our day-to-day lives, braiding hair before school, kissing our children and grandchildren as they get on the bus, watching as they run to playdates, delivering them to ball practice, it’s human nature for us to forget about those parents and grandparents who are kissing their kids in a hospital bed or hugging them on their way to treatment.

When the horrible truth about children’s illnesses is brought before us, we’re reminded of our blessings. I am as guilty as you are—I think it’s because of the pain it brings our hearts if we replace our child’s face with that of a critically-ill child.

I am reminded that every flower of tomorrow is the seed planted from yesterday.

Show me a seed, water it, and I’ll show you a harvest. I’m asking you tonight to help Make-A-Wish with our garden, our garden of granting wishes. Planting seeds takes money, watering takes volunteers, and harvesting puts smiles on the faces of a child who doesn’t have much to smile about. We’re asking you to find the seed at the bottom of your heart or deep in your pockets to bring forth a flower.

Thank you for joining us this evening and thank you for feeling the heart tug when we describe the smile on a child’s face as they discover their wish is coming true.

All the flowers of the tomorrows are in the seeds we plant today.

Yolanda Arriola

Every queen deserves a throne to mark her impact on the world around her.

Yolanda Arriola, one of our queens, is no longer with us and unable to join us this evening. There’s an empty chair that cannot and never will be filled. I’m referring to the chair the Yolanda once occupied at the Make-A-Wish El Paso Regional Council table.

Yolanda signified the American dream. She was born in Guadalajara, Mexico and moved to America, and we all know the rest of her story. She was the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Southwest University. She was a woman of courage who inspired many in her roles as a mother, grandmother, educator and philanthropist. Yolanda realized the importance of giving back to the El Paso community she called home. She had a love for children that was evident in the sparkle in her eyes as she spoke of the need to help the less fortunate.

In that chair, she brought rich years of business knowledge and expertise along with fundraising skills.

Yolanda loved hosting, partying, entertaining and chairing this same event four years ago when she coordinated the annual Make-A-Wish fundraiser. Most of all, Yolanda brought her love of children and her compassion for the children of Make-A-Wish to our table.

“We have a mission,” she would say, “and our mission is to give every Make-A-Wish child in El Paso the gift of a wish.”

Yolanda was never quiet as she sat in her chair. She had opinions, she had visions, and she rolled up her silk sleeves to make her visions come true. She was a woman charged with the responsibility of developing a long-term endowment for Make-A-Wish by having those who believed in our cause to leave a portion of their lifetime finances to our mission.

Her ideas are the foundation of this organization that will continue to sit in her chair, on our hearts and minds as we move forward carrying on her legacy.

Yolanda’s departure touched many from the obvious, her friends and family; to the not so obvious, those she served and the current students at Southwest University. And equally as important, the future students whose educational pathway she has already set in motion.

We honor her tonight for her lifetime of work and the significant difference she made in our community. Yolanda made our world a better place.

Artist Bios

Los Dos Los Dos is the moniker of husband and wife duo Ramon and Christian Cardenas. Working on both sides of the border, they mix and combine their individual styles and backgrounds to create work in response to popular culture.

The artists create public art installations as well as gallery work to form a dialogue between the city and its people.

Ramon is a Filipino-American visual artist and co-founder of Maintain, a multimedia artist network formed in 2007. The coalition was part of the underground art and music culture of El Paso, participating and creating numerous cultural events aimed towards the general public.

Christian is a mixed media artist from Cd. Juárez, Chih. Mexico with a background in graphic design and textiles. Her BFA portfolio includes a series of lithographs, screenprints, and illustrations addressing the ongoing femicides of her native city.

Their approach to their work is ethnographic in nature and includes talking, photographing, and sketching the people they interact with on a daily basis or in travels, with a style inspired by “gráfica popular,” resulting in a description of their socio-cultural environment. They have exhibited their work in El Paso, Austin, San Antonio, San Francisco, USA, and Cd. Juárez, Chihuahua City, Puebla City, Oaxaca City, CDMS, Mexico.

Los Dos worked with former wish kid Vivian to create a visual representation of her wish’s impact on her life.

Marco Sánchez Marco Sánchez is a Mexican-born artist based in El Paso. He received his BFA from the University of Texas El Paso with a double concentration in painting and printmaking. Sanchez received his MFA in printmaking from Edinboro University in May 2020. He has worked primarily in the southwestern United States, and he has also participated in residencies throughout Mexico including Mexico City, Michoacán, Oaxaca, Queretaro.

His other residencies in the United States were in Madison, Wisconsin and Cleveland, Ohio at Zygote Press. Sánchez works as contract preparator at the El Paso Museum of History, at the Rubin Center for the Visual Arts, as a teaching artist with the El Paso Museum of Art, and he is also currently an adjunct professor of Life Drawing and Printmaking at El Paso Community College. His work ranges from his relationship with his mentors and peers to cultural background, folklore, the omnipresent day laborers and ambulant workers that abound in the border region, and the notion of immigrant identity and the preservation of culture and heritage. Marco worked with wish kid Jase to understand his wish journey and create a single-edition print exclusively for Wish Night.

Artist Bios

Paola Martinez Paola Martinez is an interdisciplinary visual artist located in the border region of El Paso, Texas and CD. Juárez, Mexico. She completed her BFA in Painting and Art History at the University of Texas at El Paso. Her eclectic and indigenous portraits pay homage to her Mexican heritage, bringing awareness and life to the ancient tribes that adapt and diminish in today’s modern world.

By using her unique finger painting style, the artist believes that she truly becomes in contact with her subjects and work.

Martinez is known to utilize a black and white palette in order to remove classism and create equality, however she constantly explores color through her bright mural work. The multidisciplinary artist is constantly inspired by her travels around the world as she shares her knowledge and brings cultural diversity to art, creating unison in humanity through her work. Paola noticed former wish kid Jarrett’s love for watercolor painting and immediately sought to incorporate that into their piece, where he was able to incorporate El Paso’s beautiful sunsets into the work.

Rogelio Rosiles Rogelio Rosiles studied Visual Arts and printmaking at Escuela Popular de Bellas Artes, in Morelia, Michoacan. He works mostly in print, illustration, sign painting, murals, etc. His work is filled with humor and social commentary with a particular focus on the binational condition of being a Mexican-American. Rogelio spent time learning about former wish kid Khloe and her wish over months of Zoom meetings with her and her mother, and his piece reflects her loves and her hope for her upcoming wish.

AUCTION RULES CHECK-IN / BID NUMBERS Upon arrival, each person will be asked to complete registration and receive a bid paddle. Anyone wishing to bid on an auction item must have a bid number. Bid numbers are unique and will serve as identification throughout the auction proceedings. Bid numbers can also be found on the mobile auction webpage.

MOBILE BIDDING Mobile bidding on silent auction items begins when the mobile bidding link is sent (via text) to guests and will close at 9:30 p.m., with check-out beginning at 9:45 p.m. Descriptions and restrictions of items are listed in the mobile auction description of the item. To make a bid on an item, a bid must be made through the mobile bidding software. The price appearing next to your bid constitutes the price you are committing to pay for the item in case no higher bid is made at a later time. Each new mobile bid represents an increase corresponding to the selected amount. Please see the Auction Help Desk if you require assistance with placing a mobile bid throughout the evening.

LIVE AUCTION The Live Auction will take place during the main program beginning at 7:45 p.m. Your bid paddle must be used to participate in the Live Auction. To bid, please raise your bid paddle to notify the auctioneer or auction bid spotter of your desire to bid. Your oral or motion bid constitutes an agreement to bid. Once the auctioneer announces "sold," the merchandise becomes the property of the winning bidder and payment must be made at the conclusion of the event. All sales are considered final.

CONDITIONS OF SALE All merchandise is sold "as is" and Make-A-Wish makes no warranties expressed nor implied, or representations in connection with the sale. No statement made in this packet, orally at the auction or elsewhere shall be deemed to be such a warranty or assumption of liability against the organization or the donor of the product or service. Through the purchase, the buyer waives any and all claims against the organization or the donor of the product or service. Neither Make-A-Wish nor the donor is responsible for any personal injury or damage to property that may result from the use of the product or service sold. Auction participants understand that all items have been solicited in good faith and that all descriptions, representations, and values associated with auction items are based upon information provided by the donor and or of approximate value. Items may have restrictions and every attempt has been made to include the most relevant restrictions on bid sheets and/or on informational placards. Auction bidders may request to review certificates for restrictions prior to placing a bid for an item by notifying an auction representative. All items must be paid for and should be collected at the end of the event. Items which have been sold and not collected within 180 days of the event will become the property of Make-A-Wish.

CHECK OUT Check-out will begin approximately five minutes following close of the silent auction items. Winning bidders will receive an invoice at check-out indicating all items won and/or purchased at the event. Payments may be made with check or credit card.

All sales are considered final and payment in full is expected the evening of the event. Merchandise and gift certificates will be available for pickup following payment. If you chose to pre-scan your credit card and do not check out at the end of the evening, your credit card will be charged 1-2 business days following the event for the amount due. Should you desire to not pay with the credit card placed on file, please let the staff at the registration table know prior to the end of the event, on the evening of the event. All items not collected the night of the event will be available at the Make-A-Wish North Texas office located at 310 N Mesa St Suite 411, El Paso, TX 79901.
