he field of occupational therapy is a true mix of the arts and sciences. The work requires not only a thorough knowledge of neuroanatomy, anatomy and physiology, but also the ability to blend this knowledge with a person’s desire to perform certain activities or occupations. At this blending stage, the creativity of the profession shines. It is a profession of caring for others, improving health and customizing treatment programs to help people recover from or live better with injury, illness or disability.

Occupational Therapists Ask, “What Matters to You?” Your answer will depend on your role: parent, friend, student, spouse, athlete, painter or traveler. These day-to-day activities bring meaning and purpose to our lives.

When we face health-related challenges, occupational therapists (OTs) help us to find new ways to do the things that matter.

“Why Struggle?”

Getting dressed after a stroke. Driving after an accident. Caring for a preterm infant or a family member after surgery.

Life can quickly become challenging.

This is when OTs step in to observe, set goals, plan new strategies and help patients develop new abilities in order to reach those goals. As holistic healthcare professionals, OTs apply their expertise to help people stay healthy, productive and independent — without struggling.

The occupational therapy profession has an exceptional career outlook. Occupational therapists are in demand. They work in diverse settings and serve the specific needs of people of all ages. Occupational therapy repeatedly gets high rankings in job satisfaction polls, and the field is expected to keep growing. The U.S. Department of Labor projects a 29% increase in employment for OTs through 2022.

Our students get more. Smaller classes mean more interaction with professors and more time working in labs and on cases.

Our Smart Simulation Lab is a two-story house we’ve built in a former theater. With a kitchen, restaurant setting, living room and car, it is a complete, complex and accurate laboratory where students learn the art and science of living life to the fullest.

Our Assistive Technology Lab is a state-of-the-art lab utilizing 3D printers and other devices to assist clients in everyday activities. Our curriculum fosters collaboration and connection, emphasizing the importance of interprofessional collaboration both within and beyond healthcare professions in fields such as engineering, biology, humanities and social sciences.

Through case studies, academics and research, Clarkson’s OTs aren’t simply taught the how’s and why’s — they are trained to innovate, solve unique problems and contribute. By mastering core academic abilities, personal and social development, and the philosophical values of occupational therapy, our students gain a deeper understanding of communications, ethics and the application of technology to serve humanity.

The MS in occupational therapy program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association.

ACOTE awarded the program a sevenyear, full accreditation in August 2017.

Physical Therapy, DPT LOCATION:

hysical therapy (PT) is the application of human movement science to help people maintain and enhance their activity levels and participation in social activities. We believe PT helps people to live fuller and richer lives. We produce graduates who emulate the core values of the profession in their physical therapy practice. Our faculty, graduates and students contribute to the profession, the community and society through education, scholarship, service and practice.

Problem-Based Learning The program utilizes a problem-based learning (PBL) curricular model, which best prepares students to practice in today’s challenging healthcare environment. The philosophy behind PBL is simple: the best way to learn a new concept is to experience it firsthand. Working in groups of six to eight, Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students learn and apply clinical skills and knowledge to a wide variety of clinical scenarios.

Through PBL, students learn to — Develop lifelong learning skills that allow them to seek answers independently.

— Practice evaluation and intervention strategies to experience what patients experience and develop competency under the supervision of physical therapists.

Clinical Education Clinical education is integrated throughout the curriculum. In addition to participating in four full-time clinical education experiences, students interact with patients during their coursework, applying concepts learned in class starting the first semester.

The PT program partners with clinical sites across the country, exposing students to patients and clients in a variety of clinical practice settings.

Faculty Expertise and Facilities Our faculty have advanced clinical certifications in orthopedics, neurology, geriatrics, pediatrics and strength and conditioning, which ensures that students learn the latest techniques and concepts.

In short, our faculty are clinical experts.

A small class size of 30 or less means greater individualized attention and support from faculty. In addition, the PT program has state-of-the-art assessment, treatment and research technologies to prepare students for clinical practice.

The DPT program at Clarkson is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education.

Physician Assistant Studies, MS LOCATION:

Our mission is to educate physician assistants to become highly skilled and compassionate healthcare providers.

Students have clinical assignments at sites in St. Lawrence County and surrounding areas. Starting in the third semester, students have supervised practice in a number of healthcare settings, including ambulatory medicine, internal medicine, emergency medicine, general surgery, pediatrics, behavioral health, women’s health and two elective areas. These handson experiences culminate with a clinical research elective of the student’s choice, a master’s project and a summative review for final testing and certification exams.

he Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies (MSPAS) program takes an interdisciplinary approach with an emphasis on patient-centered care. As a graduate, you can become a leader in the healthcare community, continuously striving for excellence in your professional endeavors while compassionately providing for the healthcare needs of those you serve.

The MSPAS is a rigorous 28-consecutivemonth, seven-semester program that creates high-quality and compassionate physician assistants who serve their patients and communities with pride.

Students benefit from the expertise of the program’s faculty and local healthcare providers, innovative teaching materials, small class sizes and one-on-one attention from faculty members. The Smart Simulation Lab at Clarkson Hall, a state-of-the-art facility, simulates an actual living space. Here, students learn how to help patients overcome everyday challenges with technology-based solutions, such as low-vision supports, automated lift systems, assistive technology devices, environmental controls and smart home technology. This simulation lab provides students with deep experiential learning that translate into real-life work situations.

is based on evidence of intellectual achievement, motivation and aptitude. All students must have, or be a candidate for, an undergraduate degree from an accredited postsecondary institution before applying for graduate admission.

Students with advanced degrees or substantial graduate work will also be evaluated based on their record of previous graduate accomplishments.
