Basic Science, MS LOCATION:

f you’re looking for a degree in the sciences but want to focus in an area that does not fit within one of our other degree programs, then Clarkson’s Master of Science in Basic Science might be for you.

Degree Requirements: To complete an MS in basic science, students must meet the minimum requirements for the master’s degree, as outlined in the current Clarkson course catalog.

A minimum of 30 credit hours of graduate coursework must be completed, as follows: — At least 20 hours of course and seminar work must be completed. The balance of coursework must be consistent with the research or professional experience component.

— One of the following research experiences or comparable professional experiences must be completed: – A written thesis based on independent research.

– A comprehensive examination.

– An appropriate, professionally oriented special project.

— Only courses numbered 500 and above are accepted for graduate credit.

— At least one year of academic study must be beyond the bachelor of science.

— Ten credit hours of transfer credit (grade of B or better) may be accepted.

— Students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 in courses used to meet graduation requirements.

— All work must be completed in five years.

Additional graduation requirements may be set by the research advisor or primary department.

he Department of Chemistry & Biomolecular Science at Clarkson has a longstanding reputation for providing a first-class graduate education in chemistry, equipping students with solid expertise in advanced materials, colloidal/nanoparticle science, surfaces and interfaces, polymer science, biomaterials, bionanotechnology, bioelectronics and biosensors.

Strengths of our program include an international reputation for excellence in research, a highly collaborative research environment and established connections

with chemical and advanced materials industries.

These relationships can provide opportunities for technology transfer and potential employment.

Degree Requirements:

Graduate researchers team up with faculty to address many of today’s most pressing problems related to the environment, advanced manufacturing, sustainable energy and healthcare.

Graduate research in chemistry is supported by federal grants, primarily from the National Science Foundation, as well as by New York state and private industry funding.

— At least 18 (MS) or 24 (PhD) credits hours that are earned via coursework chosen from graduate-level offerings (500 and above) and that meet all established requirements. Students may choose courses according to their areas of interest and in consultation with their advisors. The remaining credit hours needed for the MS or PhD degrees are earned via research project work.

Competitive research and teaching assistantships are available for those who qualify.

Clarkson also offers a Master of Arts in Teaching with a chemistry focus.

Candidates in chemistry must complete the following: — A minimum of 30 (MS) or 90 (PhD) credit hours.

— An original research project submitted as a written thesis to be orally presented to and approved by a committee of at least three (MS) or five (PhD) faculty members.

Interdisciplinary Bioscience and Biotechnology, MS/PhD LOCATION: Potsdam DELIVERY METHOD:

he Department of Biology offers two interdisciplinary graduate programs leading to either an MS or a PhD in interdisciplinary bioscience and biotechnology (IBB). These distinctive programs are designed to be collaborative with other departments and to provide highly personalized experience with renowned faculty.

MS in Interdisciplinary Bioscience and Biotechnology

— A 4+1 option in which strong Clarkson undergraduate students and those from affiliated institutions take two graduate courses their senior year and complete the MS degree in the fifth year. This provides a head start and rapid track to an MS in bioscience.

The IBB-MS program combines coursework with research or project work to educate bioscience students in advanced content knowledge and applied laboratory skills.

This program consists of a minimum of 30 credits beyond a bachelor’s degree. These credits are taken in coursework, laboratory, seminar and thesis research work.

The IBB-MS program is designed for those who need a bioscience MS degree to be competitive for scientific and administrative positions in the biomedical and biotech industry, for strong PhD bioscience graduate programs or for highly competitive veterinary or medical school professional programs. The IBB-PhD program will educate students with the skills needed to work on complex problems in the biosciences. To support this aim, the graduate program faculty includes biologists, chemists,

physicists, mathematicians and engineers who serve as dissertation advisors.

The objective of the IBB-PhD program is to provide you with specialized knowledge in a major field of biology, plus the technical skills needed to enable you to work with interdisciplinary teams of bioscientists in academic, corporate and government research settings. Based on current areas of faculty expertise within the IBB-PhD program, you have the option of specializing in one of four interdisciplinary sub-fields: Molecular Bioscience & Biotechnology.

Biomedical Sciences & Neuroscience.

Computational Biology & Bioinformatics.

Ecology, Evolution & the Environment.

This program consists of 90 credits beyond a bachelor’s degree. These credits are taken in coursework, seminar and project work to fulfill the PhD requirements.

Computer Science, MS/PhD LOCATION:

he computer science program provides you with an education beyond the fundamentals and explores advancements in the theory of computation and algorithms, computer systems and networks, programming languages and software development, artificial intelligence and applications.

The MS in computer science is an interdisciplinary program offered jointly by the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering and the Department of Computer Science. You take courses in both departments on a wide variety of topics

ranging from the theoretical to the applied. If you have an undergraduate background in an appropriate computer science context, then join us and expand your knowledge.

The MS in computer science is a 30-credit-hour program.

A master’s thesis must also be completed at the end of the program for successful advancement. The program can be completed in about two years.

The PhD in computer science consists of 90 credits beyond a bachelor’s degree. These credits are taken in coursework, seminar and thesis work.

Research areas within the Department of Computer Science include software engineering, natural language processing, human-machine interaction, image processing, deep learning, computer graphics, computer vision, virtualization, cloud computing, computer security, operating systems, algorithmic accountability, quantum computing, graph theory, machine learning, computational complexity, computational logic and formal methods.

athematics is a lot more than just numbers — it is concepts, creativity, invention and solutions. Math is the heart of applied science.

Clarkson offers graduate programs designed to help you increase your fundamental knowledge and to give you guidance and experience in applied research. The emphasis of our degree programs and research activities is applied mathematics: dynamical systems, optimization, numerical analysis and

computational methods, probability and statistics.

As a graduate student, you pursue these objectives by taking advanced courses, participating in seminars and carrying out and reporting on a research project. The Department of Mathematics provides the advantage of a close, personal association between you and the faculty, giving you individualized attention regarding your needs and interests.

The MS in mathematics program is 30 credit hours, with coursework and a capstone thesis required to fulfill the program requirements. This program is generally completed within two years.

The PhD in mathematics consists of 90 credit hours beyond a bachelor’s degree.

These credits are taken in coursework, seminar and project work to fulfill the PhD requirements.

Physics, MS/PhD LOCATION: Potsdam DELIVERY METHOD: On-site

he physics program provides you with a sound background in theoretical and experimental physics, as well as guidance and experience in research.

We offer close, personal interaction between you and the faculty, giving individual attention to your needs and interests as you move through the program.

Active research interests in the department include chemical physics, energy storage and conversion, nonlinear phenomena,

condensed matter physics, transport properties, effects of disorder, statistical mechanics, phase transitions, surface and interface physics, optics, biophysics and the selfassembly of nanomaterials.

The MS in physics is a 30-credit-hour program.

Thesis and non-thesis options are available and must be successfully completed for advancement. The program can be completed in about two years.

Clarkson also offers a Master of Arts in Teaching with a physics focus.
