Internships/working abroad

Whether or not you plan to spend a semester or longer studying abroad, the staff in the International and Career Centers can help you prepare, search for and secure an international internship or co-op experience. Some of these positions are paid, while others offer students academic credit.

If you plan to study abroad:

While you are abroad at a partner institution, you are welcome to apply for internships and co-ops that will occur after your study abroad semester. Many of our partners have career centers that you can work with to obtain work experience after study. While not all partners offer these opportunities, you can identify universities that do with help from the International Center staff and our website at clarkson.edu/global.

If you do NOT plan to study abroad:

The International Center works with third-party affiliates to organize professional internship opportunities in major cities around the globe. They will match your interests to employers’ needs to provide the best possible experience.

Safety & Wellness Abroad

At Clarkson, our biggest priority is ensuring your safety while abroad. Our International Center will work with you to:

• Register travel with the Department of State’s STEP

Program so you will receive updates about the country in which you are living or visiting. • Review information on the Centers for Disease

Control and Prevention website regarding vaccines and travel advisories based on your area of travel. • Guide you through the challenges and risks of living abroad and traveling on your own. • Maintain a support system both in the new city of residence and at home for you to reach out to at any time. • Check in with you from time to time to see how you are doing and if there are ways to improve the experience. • Help you connect with others in the new city of residence and understand on-the-ground resources.

Our office is constantly receiving and reviewing the latest travel advisories. In the instance that there are issues in your geographic region that may impact your safety and well-being, we will assess situations on a case-by-case basis, increase our contact with you and make decisions about your ability to remain abroad.

How to Find and Apply for the Right Experience for You

• Start early. Begin planning with your academic advisor during your first year so you can have the most options possible. If you miss this part, that’s okay! Talk to your academic advisor as soon as you can about your interests in global experiences. • Go to relevant events. The

International Center hosts an annual Global Opportunities

Fair, Study Abroad 101 sessions, Travel Tuesdays and more throughout the year. Try to attend at least one event during your first and second years at Clarkson.

• Learn from your peers.

Talk to other students who have already completed international travel that you’re

interested in to hear about their experiences and gain valuable firsthand insight.

• Explore all your options.

Use our CU Global website to understand all your options.

Search by major, location, length of travel, type of program, semester and more.

• Use outside resources.

• Read up on where you plan to go: check out travel guides, cultural resources, and travel blogs. • Binge watch travel videos on YouTube, on everything from what to pack, to going through customs in a particular country. • Download some great travel apps.

• Visit us in the International

Center. Our staff are here to assist you in finding the right experience to suit your goals, interests and needs. We are located in Suite 2300 in the

Andrew S. Schuler Educational

Resources Center at the heart of campus.

• Watch out for application deadlines and requirements.

Each type of global experience has different eligibility and travel requirements, as well as application instructions and deadlines. Stay on top of these to ensure you can travel!

Our Commitment to Sustainable Travel

One of Clarkson’s goals for the whole University is to become carbon neutral by 2025. Airfare emissions related to international travel are unavoidable and account for around 3,000 tons of CO2 annually. Clarkson will achieve carbon neutrality from international air travel by offsetting carbon.

Offsetting Carbon

Offsetting carbon is a market solution to climate change in which a different organization is paid to remove an amount of global warming gases from the atmosphere that is equivalent to what’s been emitted. This can be achieved through various activities, ranging from planting trees to destroying chemical refrigerants.
