ABOUT THE CONFERENCE Welcome to our first Annual Conference: "Restorative Justice and Systemic Change in Scotland". This event aims to create a platform for meaningful conversations about the impact of restorative justice and the shift in perspectives towards its positive role in fostering systemic change and transformation in Scotland.

We are thrilled to bring together individuals who are passionate about restorative justice and create a space for meaningful conversations. Our CEO Ashley Scotland and the Thriving Survivors team, along with our partners, have worked hard to make this conference a success.

Attendees can expect to engage in captivating panels, practical workshops and access to expert pods. We are also excited to announce the launch of Estelle Zinnstag and Marie Keenan's book “ Sexual Violence and Restorative Justice: Addressing the Justice Gap”, and Judith Herman's latest book, "Truth and Repair".

DR KIERAN MCCARTAN Professor of Criminology at University of the West of England

Kieran McCartan is a Professor of Criminology at the University of the West of England. He has completed funded research for the Economic and Social Research Council, Leverhulme, the Home Office, Ministry of Justice, and Australia’s National Research Organisation for Women’s Safety. Kieran has advised (including the Council of Europe and the Australian National Office of Child Safety) and continues to advise (including the European Union, ECPAT International, and NSPCC) many national and international governments and organisations, as well as sitting on several boards (including the Confederation of European Probation and Circles Southwest). He is currently the Vice-Chair for the National Organisation for the Treatment of Abuse (NOTA).

JUDITH HERMAN Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School

Judith Lewis Herman M.D. is a Professor of Psychiatry (part-time) at Harvard Medical School.

For thirty years, until she retired, she was Director of Training at the Victims of Violence Program at The Cambridge Hospital, Cambridge, MA. She is the author of the award-winning books Father-Daughter Incest (Harvard University Press, 1981), and Trauma and Recovery (Basic Books, 1992).

She is the recipient of numerous awards, including a Guggenheim fellowship in 1984 and the 1996 Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies. In 2007 she was named a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.

Her new book, Truth and Repair: How Trauma Survivors Envision Justice, was published in March, 2023.

AILBHE GRIFFITH Restorative Justice Advocate | The film The Meeting

Ailbhe Griffith is an advocate for restorative justice in cases of serious violence, including sexual violence, following her own experience of a restorative meeting with the man who offended against her in 2014.

She has spoken publicly about her experience, travelling domestically and internationally, accompanying Associate Professor Marie Keenan to various restorative conferences and criminal justice events. Marie and Ailbhe have worked closely together in promoting restorative justice as an additional mechanism of justice for victims of violence, since Marie assisted Ailbhe through her own restorative journey. Ailbhe is passionate about raising awareness about the benefits these meetings can offer victims of crime. Her drive to promote it as an option for victims of violence culminated in her participation in a film depiction of her real-life meeting, directed by Irish Director Alan Gilsenan, entitled ‘The Meeting’. By using the film as an advocacy tool, to bring the reality of these meetings to the wider public, she has engaged in multiple T.V., radio and other media interviews to ‘spread the word’. Her belief in the transformative nature of restorative justice is something she will hold forever and feels it should be made available for all victims of crime, regardless of the type of crime, should they choose it.

DR ESTELLE ZINSSTAG Lecturer/Assistant Professor of Criminology, Edinburgh Napier University

Estelle Zinsstag (MSc, PhD) is a lecturer/assistant professor of criminology at Edinburgh Napier University and a senior researcher at the Leuven Institute of Criminology (KU Leuven, Belgium). She is also a research associate at the Centre for Criminology (University of Oxford) after having been its departmental lecturer in 2019-2020.

She is co-chief editor of 'The International Journal of Restorative Justice' and of the book series 'Studies in Restorative Justice' published by Eleven (The Netherlands). She is co-chair of both the 'Scottish Network of Restorative Justice Researchers' and the Working Group on Restorative Justice at the European Society of Criminology. She is a member of the European Forum for Restorative Justice (research committee and gendered violence working group) as well as of the Scottish Centre for Crime and Justice Research (UK). Finally she is a member of the stakeholder group guiding Scottish Government on the development of RJ in Scotland.

Marie Keenan, Associate Professor, School of Social Policy, Social Work and Social Justice, University College Dublin, Ireland, and Estelle Zinsstag, Lecturer/Assistant Professor of Criminology, Edinburgh Napier University Marie Keenan (PhD) is an Associate Professor at the School of Social Policy, Social Work and Social Justice at University College Dublin. She is a criminologist, systemic and forensic psychotherapist, a restorative justice practitioner and registered social worker. She is a member of the Advisory Board of UCD'S Criminology Institute, member of the Higher Education Authority's Advisory Group on Sexual Violence and Harassment in Higher Education Institutions, and Chair and Principal Investigator for UCD's Sexual Exploitation Research Programme.

She is a member of the Gender Based Violence and Institutional Abuse Working Groups of the European Forum for Restorative Justice, Board member of the Global Advisory Council for Restorative Justice International, Advisor on training for Restorative Justice in response to sexual violence in Estonia and Member of the Advisory Board for the Implementation of Restorative Justice in Scotland. She has contributed in several capacities to the Australian Royal Commission on the Sexual Abuse of Children in Australia.

Development Lead and Service Manager, Thriving Survivors

David has recently moved on from holding the position of Community Safety & Justice Manager at Midlothian Council and is now the Service Lead at Thriving Survivors, Family Services. Prior to this he was a senior practitioner with Barnardo's specialising in work with children and young people with harmful sexual behaviour and / or who had experienced sexual abuse or exploitation. David has extensive experience in providing assessments and interventions for vulnerable children, adolescents and adults within the field of sexual harm and violence and has also worked in custodial settings. David provides training independently on a range of themes about sexual violence and has facilitated multi-disciplinary training internationally. He currently sits on the NOTA Scotland executive committee and is the chair of the national advisory panel for the third sector organisation, Thriving Survivors in which he supports the practice and development of restorative justice in cases of sexual harm.

Stuart Allardyce is a Director at Lucy Faithfull Foundation with responsibility for Stop It Now! services in Scotland and research.

He has worked with young people who have displayed harmful sexual behaviour for 20 years and is chair of NOTA UK and Ireland. He is a visiting researcher at Strathclyde University and co-author of ‘Working with Children and Young People Who Have Displayed Harmful Sexual Behaviour’ (Dunedin Press, 2018) and the Centre for Expertise on child sexual abuse’s ‘Sibling Sexual Abuse: A Knowledge and Practice Overview’ (2021).

He was a member of the Scottish Government’s expert working group on preventing sexual offending amongst children and young people.

10 Things Everyone Needs to Know About Harmful Sexual Behaviour Roughly one third of child sexual abuse is committed by adolescents (under 18s).

Despite this, youth sexual violence remains an under-discussed societal concern. Dive into this workshop to explore the prevalence, impact, and nuances of adolescent harmful sexual behaviour. We'll unravel misconceptions, shedding light on the contexts, causes, and nature of this behaviour. Furthermore, participants will delve into the potential value of restorative justice addressing and remedying this pressing issue.

RACHAEL MOSS Restorative justice Service manager at Thriving Survivors

Rachael is the restorative justice service manager at Thriving Survivors and is responsible for oversight and operational delivery of the restorative justice services.

Rachael has a degree in Psychology and an MSc in Forensic Psychology. She holds over a decade of experience within community justice, restorative justice and third sector settings, as a front-line practitioner, including performance, project management and policy roles.

Rachael is an Associate Trainer for Trauma Informed and Responsive Practice at Epione Training and Consultancy. She has interests in trauma informed practice and engaging with experts by lived experience. She has a keen interest for staff wellbeing and the application of trauma informed and restorative approaches in the workplace.

NINA BURROWES Founder of the Consent Collective

Nina is a psychologist, activist, and author who has spent her career working on the psychology of sexual harm and relationship abuse.

Having started her career working with people who cause sexual harm for HM Prison Service Nina now uses her understanding of the causes and consequences of sexual violence to educate judges, barristers, police officers, teachers, students, and health care practitioners across the UK and overseas.

As an activist, Nina focuses on issues that are away from the state and institutions. Here her work is with nature, uses circle, and has led to the creation of The Consent Collective healing from injustice ceremony.

Mentoring Service

Bridge to Recovery: Our peer-led group service provides a safe and supportive space for individuals to connect with others who are going through similar experiences. We offer a chatroom open 24/7 and weekly zoom meetings with a new theme every six weeks .

Mentoring Service: Our mentoring service is delivered by individuals with life experience who have overcome similar challenges. We provide one-on-one support to helpyou set and achieve personal goals, build self-esteem and develop life skills.

Counselling Service: Our professional counsellors provide confidential and nonjudgmental support to individuals 18+. Our counsellors have extensive training and experience and offer a comprehensive block of counselling sessions

Discovering Me Program: Our post-traumatic growth program is designed to help individuals who have experienced trauma to transform their pain into personal growth.

Restorative Conversation and Processes is a voluntary service of independent and facilitated contact, which supports constructive dialogue between survivors and those responsible for harm, using a variety of direct and indirect approaches. It may also include the active participation of the community, when appropriate. It aims to empower survivors to express the impact of harm, explore reparative actions, set boundaries, and create a positive path forward for all involved.

Restorative Conversations and Processes

Restorative Cafes are a collaborative and flexible service that uses group dialogue to explore a variety of complex themes in small groups, aiming to connect perspectives and foster collective knowledge. The parties rotate tables and interact with everyone, fostering listening and community building. The cafes come in different formats, including local consultation cafes and pilot cafes for trauma survivors.

Restorative Cafes

The Secondary Harm Service acknowledges the potential for harm inflicted by organisations and statutory agencies through insensitive responses to survivors following a crime. It offers a safe and supportive space for conversations between those harmed and the organisations involved. Following restorative principles, this service allows those harmed to express their thoughts and feelings about the harm, guided by trained facilitators.

Secondary Harm Service

Healing Spaces are a family-led service offers safe and supported spaces for families to engage in discussions about their needs, concerns, and experiences of harm. With assistance from fully trained facilitators present throughout the process, the service encourages individuals and families to work together, discover new healing strategies, set boundaries, discuss impact and strengthen their relationships.
