Visiting Artist Series Alexander Gadjiev

Piano

Italian Slovenian born, Alexander Gadjiev grew up in a musical family with both his parents well known piano teachers and musicians. The eclectic European culture of Gorizia, his city of origin, and a natural crossroads of peoples, cultures and languages, also had a strong influence on Alexander’s natural ability to absorb, process and rework, to his own taste, different musical styles and languages.

Studying piano with his father, Alexander made his concert debut at the age of nine, giving his first solo recital a year later. Alexander was awarded honours with his diploma at the age of seventeen and went on to participate in the Premio Venezia a competition reserved for the best young talents in Italy, winning the 30th edition of the award.

More recently, Alexander was selected for the 2019 2021 BBC New Generation Artists Scheme, which provided opportunities for him to perform in many of the major festivals and series in the UK, both in recital and as soloist with the BBC orchestras, and to record regularly for BBC Radio 3.

Fresh from his win at the prestigious 2021 Sydney International Online Piano Competition in Sydney, Alexander was awarded the Ernest Hutcheson First Prize and took home an additional six coveted prizes. Alexander is currently scheduled to play with Maestro Valery Gergiev, this December at the Mariinsky Piano Festival in St Petersburg, along with many other European and North American engagements, culminating in a national concert tour of Australia in the Spring of 2022, as part of his prize package.

Visiting Artist Series

Coco's Lunch & Drummergirl

Workshop

- Thursday, 27 October 5:00pm at CVCon

Free Concert - Friday, 28 October 7:00pm at Market Square

Coco’s Lunch are pioneers in the composition and performance of contemporary world/jazz vocal repertoire that is now performed by vocal ensembles and choirs globally: South Indian vocal percussion, high vibration poetry and skin-tight harmonies are the hallmarks of this extraordinary music. The new Misra Chappu show by Coco's Lunch showcases all new pieces of exceptional beauty and unparalleled originality and forges an adventurous new direction in contemporary vocal music. This is heart music, set to the pulse of trademark Coco’s 4 part groove, and featuring the spectacular artform known as konnakol (South Indian vocal percussion). Composers Lisa Young and Jacqueline Gawler draw deeply from the rich sonic palettes of Australia, India and Africa, and between the singers an impressive alchemy brings these stories to life.

Joining Coco's Lunch for the first time onstage is the brilliant Simone Lang (drummergirl.com.au), a specialist in traditional and contemporary West African drumming. She has travelled to many countries in the world including Guinea, Senegal and The Gambia to study whilst being immersed in the community and culture. Based on the Coffs Coast, Simone's mission is to inspire othersespecially women - to discover the joy of group drumming.
