CL ARENCE HALL NEWSLETTER & WHAT’S ON Don’t miss David Lewis!

‘David Lewis’ is a melodrama being performed at the Clarence Hall by Crickhowell & District Players on two evenings Friday, 30 September and Saturday, 1 October.

The melodrama is a whole new experience for the Players and revolves around a fascinating historic story which resulted in a local man, David Lewis, being transported to Tasmania.

Entry is free to encourage all ages to come along and learn a little more about Crickhowell in the mid 1800s.

The Clarence bar will be open and a cafe style setting will create an informal setting.

A full programme for Autumn…

Always at the heart of the community, the Clarence Hall is set for a busy Autumn!

We are delighted to be hosting a wide range of events that will showcase talent, both local and national.

These include a Victorian melodrama with Crickhowell & District Players, an Opera Evening with Crickhowell’s U3A, award winning Synergy performing in a charity concert with Alive & Kickin’, a celebration of 110 years of AAODS and performances from Hayseed Dixie, Rollin’ Stoned and Wolfgang Flür, alongside our regular Bingo nights and lunchtime recitals. We’re also in the process of con rming the rearranged date for a fascinating talk by local legends Ryland Wallace and John Webb. Do keep an eye out for posters and social media updates - there’s something for everyone!

Lunchtime Recital Programme Supporting local performing artists, the Clarence Hall lunchtime Recital Programme continues on Saturday, 8 October from 12.30-1.30pm. Ian Cooper and the Uskulele Group will bring a smile to our faces with the many differing styles of music the group performs. Admission is free but there will be a collection for the Clarence Hall Refurbishment Appeal.

Bring your own packed lunch and enjoy a performance by local musicians. Tea and coffee available. This series is sponsored by the Clarence Hall for the Community.

Clarence Hall Gems!

In the latest in our series on the “Clarence Hall Gems”, Hall Trustee and Director, David Jeremiah considers the Hall’s ceiling.

Wolfgang Flür Wood red Summit, by arrangement with Selective Agency, presents Wolfgang Flür live at the Clarence Hall on Saturday, 8 October. Wolfgang Flür is a German musician, best known for playing percussion in the seminal electronic band Kraftwerk from 1973 to 1987.

In the 1820s, a botanist, David Douglas, came across a r tree in America which produced easily worked, dense, resinous, timber.

The timber was imported into Victorian Britain in huge quantities. It became the timber of choice for the Chapels, concert halls and civic buildings that were springing up everywhere, and for our Hall. It could span large distances without bending, is rot resistant, could be machined carved, and is attractive.

Looking at the ceiling now, you will notice the deeply incised cornice which runs from truss to truss. Baulks of knot-free timber were required to make these statement items, something which would be near impossible today. The cornice, purlins, vents, and boarded ceiling are still as good as when they were installed, but require a clean to restore the original honey colour.

So when you’re next in the Hall, look up and picture what it has sheltered over its lifetime!

Rollin’ Stoned Global Promotions present the The Rollin’ Stoned at the Clarence Hall on Saturday, 15 October. This outstanding tribute band focuses on the early part of The Rolling Stones from 1964 – 1969, including ‘Jumping Jack Flash’, ‘Paint It Black’, ‘Not Fade Away’ and ‘Satisfaction’.
