CL ARENCE HALL NEWSLETTER & WHAT’S ON A Star Performance!

The Clarence Hall was delighted to host Abergavenny Star Players in August as they returned to the stage with their performance of the cult musical, RENT, raising much needed funds for St David’s Hospice.

Based on Puccini’s beloved opera La Bohème, the show follows the ups and downs of a year in the life of a group of artistic friends living in Manhattan’s East Village.

An enthralled audience was treated to a fantastic performance from start to nish, featuring an array of outstanding local talent. Well done to everyone involved!

A busy Autumn ahead…

Always at the heart of the community, the Clarence Hall is set for a busy Autumn!

Many of our regular groups are restarting in September following the summer break and we are delighted to be hosting a wide range of events that will showcase talent, both local and national.

These include Crickhowell Flower Show, local legends Ryland Wallace and John Webb returning with another fascinating talk, a Victorian melodrama with Crickhowell & District Players, the entertaining Circus Berzercus, award winning Synergy performing in a charity concert with Alive & Kickin’ and performances from Dr Karl Kennedy, Hayseed Dixie, Rollin’ Stoned and Wolfgang Flür, alongside our regular Bingo nights. Do keep an eye out for posters and social media updates - there’s something for everyone!

Circus Bezercus On Sunday, 11 September, Llangattock Woodlanders are organising a free children’s comedy performance at the Clarence Hall by the hilarious Circus Berzercus. Doors open at 1.30pm with the performance starting at 2pm; tickets from https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/395255518897. Funding for the event has kindly been provided by Powys Council, Welsh Government and the Crickhowell Rotary Club.

Crickhowell Celebrates!

Our series of events to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee continues in September with a fascinating talk, ‘Memories of the Clarence Hall & Crickhowell’ by Ryland Wallace & John Webb, hosted by Dame Shân Legge-Bourke; and ‘David Lewis’, an original Victorian Melodrama by Crickhowell & District Players. Clarence Hall Gems!

In the latest in our series on the “Clarence Hall Gems”, Hall Trustee and Director, David Jeremiah considers the Hall’s nials.

Adorning the roof are a collection of things called nials. These are a prerequisite for Gothic Revival buildings and put there as a sort of full stop. Their sole purpose is to add that touch of class to the façade, to draw your eye. They have been there, come snow, rain, or blazing sun, in the most exposed of positions, and in de ance of the passing of time – and they still look good. The two “spikes” on the Tower are made of wrought iron (with lead aprons) and would have been gilded. Unfortunately, the gilding has long gone but it is our intention to apply a gold resin coat when we get around to tackling the roo ng.

So, the next time you pass the Hall, look up. Just think how many people have looked at those nials. You can do likewise with the added bonus of appreciating their provenance.

Dr Karl Kennedy On Friday, 23 September, join star of iconic television programme Neighbours, Alan Fletcher, as he looks back on his 28 years as Ramsay Street’s most famous doctor, Karl Kennedy, in his intimate live show.

This is the perfect opportunity to get up close and personal with one of Neighbours’ biggest stars in a night that will be funny, fabulous and heartwarming. Last few tickets available at http:// skiddle.com/e/36083840

David Lewis, a Victorian Melodrama Due to Covid restrictions, Crickhowell and District Players have been unable to perform for two years, but did not wish to miss the opportunity to take part in the Jubilee Celebrations organised

by The Clarence Hall and The Town Council!

This melodrama is a whole new experience for the Players. They are inviting the community to come and see their portrayal of this fascinating historic story which resulted in a local man, David Lewis, being transported to Tasmania. The players are performing on two evenings - Friday, 30 September and Saturday, 1 October.

They hope that the Clarence Hall friends will support this, their rst serious drama performance, which is free entry to encourage all ages to come along and learn a little more about Crickhowell’s local history. The Clarence bar will be open and a cafe style setting will create an informal setting.
