CL ARENCE HALL NEWSLETTER & WHAT’S ON Wonderland was simply Wonderful! At the end of June, a delighted audience was privileged to experience the wonder of “Wonderland”, a performance that showcased the talents of Dance Beats, with a guest appearance from Toppers School of Dance and Drama. How fortunate we are to have an organisation such as this in our community where creativity, imagination and dance skills are nurtured in a positive way!
Crickhowell Celebrates! In June, the residents of Crickhowell came together in the latest of our series of events to celebrate The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. These comprised an evening with reworks in the Castle Grounds and various occasions at the Clarence Hall, including an impressive art exhibition with Torfaen Arts (pictured), a Celebration Tea Party for seniors, drawn mainly from local care homes, and a children’s Film Show. All of these events were a testament to how local volunteer organisations can work in partnership for the bene t of the community. At the Celebration Tea Party, volunteers from the Clarence Hall, Crickhowell Town Council, Crickhowell Rotary Club and other friends combined efforts to put on an excellent afternoon, with cream teas served on traditional tea services, a fascinating lm on the Queen’s reign and a rousing singalong to nish. Commenting on the successful event, Clarence Hall Event Director, Dian Winter said: “We’re all aware of the signi cant impact the pandemic has had on seniors in our local community. It was tremendous to see the Hall lled with fun and laughter once again. I am so grateful to everyone who gave unstintingly of their time!” Our next events continue in September, with information available in the August newsletter.

Crickhowell Rotary Duck Race Draw The Clarence Hall Refurbishment Fund is fortunate to have been chosen as one of ve local charities to bene t from the Crickhowell Rotary Duck Race Draw 2022. The initiative is led by two very important ducks - ‘Malvin the Mallard’ and ‘Tilly the Teal’ who have joined forces with local organisations to raise funds for community good causes and Rotary Charities on a 50:50 basis. Malvin and Tilly invite you to buy a Duck at £5 each and to choose one of the ve nominated causes as the co-bene ciary. The other half of the donation will go to the Rotary Charity Fund which is distributed largely among local organisations. So what are you waiting for? Clarence Hall Gems! In the latest in our series on the “Clarence Hall Gems”, as we call them, Hall Trustee and Director, David Jeremiah considers the oor of the foyer.
When the Hall was being built, Britain was in the throes of the industrial revolution. We were also exiting an architectural period called the Gothic Revival and embracing the stylistic Arts and Crafts period. The Clarence Hall is Crickhowell’s illustration of this transitional period, and the tiling in the foyer is its epitome. In Ironbridge, Shropshire, Raven Dunhill and Co made these attractive and durable tiles which were transported around the world. They were used to decorate pubs, shops, hospitals, monuments, homes, and the Clarence Hall. These tiles were not cheap, but they were the best, which is why they have survived intact.

Lunchtime Recital Programme Supporting local performing artists, the Clarence Hall lunch-time Recital Programme continues on Saturday, 2 July from 12.30-1.30pm, with Rusty Recorders, who are anything but rusty! Admission is free but there will be a collection for the Clarence Hall Refurbishment Appeal. Bring your own packed lunch and enjoy a performance by local musicians. Tea and coffee available. This series is sponsored by the Clarence Hall for the Community.
The Black Rat Effect Join Cancer Research Wales’ Crickhowell Fundraising Committee on Friday, 22 July at 7.30pm for a night with The Black Rat Effect at the Clarence Hall. Tom Jones & Elvis Spectacular Tom Jones & Elvis are taking the Clarence Hall by storm at 7.30pm on Saturday, 23 July with a fundraising concert organised by Living with Dementia.
