From the President The Chilton County Chamber of Commerce is a community service organization established to promote and support the recruitment, retention and expansion of business and retail within Chilton County. Equally important, our members serve as ambassadors to promote the county and its municipalities as centers for business, industry, agriculture and recreation. Although the expansion of business and retail opportunities is a significant aspect of the responsibilities of the Chilton County Chamber of Commerce, the objectives of our mission statement are not limited to economic development. As a community service organization, the Chilton County Chamber of Commerce promotes and supports economic and other opportunities to improve the quality of life of all residents. Expansion of healthcare facilities, supporting improvements and enrichment of our education systems, promoting opportunities for career development and expansion of recreation and entertainment outlets are important factors in the quality of life of our residents. The Chilton County Chamber of Commerce Student Ambassador program gives young men and women an opportunity to be involved with the business community. They assist the Chamber with various functions such as Business and Industry Ribbon Cuttings and Grand Openings, Annual Chamber Banquet, Fall Supper and the Peach Jam! They also represent you and Chilton County in other parts of the state as we continue to move our county forward. About Chilton County Chilton County was established in 1868 from portions of Autauga, Bibb, Perry and Shelby counties. Originally named Baker County after founder Alfred Baker Sr., the county was renamed Chilton in honor of former Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice William Parrish Chilton. Clanton was established as the county seat in 1871. Agriculture is a major industry, with peaches being the most widely known of its fruits. Each year, a basket of Chilton County peaches is presented to the governor by the reigning Peach Queens. As of the 2018 U.S. Census Bureau estimate, the county has a population of 44,153.
About Clanton Originally named Goose Pond, Clanton was re-named for James Holt Clanton, who served with distinction in the First Alabama Calvary during the Civil War. Clanton is the site of the iconic peach tower that can be seen from Interstate 65. It is home to a state-of-theart hospital as a part of St. Vincent’s Health System and a satellite campus of Jefferson State Community College. Competitions and conferences from across the state come to Clanton to meet in the Clanton Conference and Performing Arts Center. Grayson Russell of Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Talladega Nights and Mac Powell of Third Day are from here. As of the 2018 U.S. Census Bureau estimate, the city’s population is 8,756.

About Jemison Jemison is the second largest municipality in Chilton County, with a 2018 U.S. Census Bureau estimated population of 2,637. Jemison had several names before it was finally named for Robert Jemison, who owned a stage line in the area and was influential in the establishment of Birmingham. Predominately settled because of the railroad, Jemison’s downtown is now along Highway 31. In 1976, the city was the first in Chilton County to elect a minority to public office when Eddie Reed was elected Mayor. It is home to the newest school with Jemison Intermediate School being established in 2017. Gov. Kay Ivey visited Jemison in 2018 for a Chamber of Commerce luncheon.
About Thorsby Thorsby was founded in 1895 by Theodore Thorson and J.F. Peterson and E.M. Faegre who encouraged their Scandinavian and Norwegian friends living in more northern states to move to Alabama. In 1947, the town was the site of the first Chilton County Peach Festival, which although it has moved to Clanton, is an enduring tradition to this day. A historic building for the town is Helen Jenkins Chapel, which was originally built by Norwegian Lutherans in 1903 and has been used as a church by multiple congregations and as a school in bygone days. The town’s heritage is commemorated each year during the Swedish Festival. According to 2018 estimates, the population is 2,063.
About Maplesville Maplesville is the oldest town in Chilton County. It was named for businessman Stephen Maples in 1829. The railroad and the timber industry were major contributors in the development of the town. Timber and paper continue to be major industries there to this day. Historic memorabilia of the town is showcased in the old Maplesville Railroad Depot on the edge of town. Friday nights are special for Maplesville as the town gathers in the stands of the football stadium. The Maplesville Red Devils won three state championships in a row in 2014, 2015 and 2016. The heritage of the town is celebrated each year with Maplesville Heritage Day in April. According to 2018 estimates, the population is 702. 8 | Chilton County Chamber Of Commerce

The Alabama Farmers Agriculture Foundation is prepared to invest an estimated $100 million in a new Alabama Farm Center in Chilton County that could create up to 400 jobs and have an annual economic impact of $55 million. The initial plans for Alabama Farm Center at Alfa Centennial Park call for a five multi-use building complex on a 500-acre parcel owned by the city of Clanton and Chilton County on the east side of Interstate 65 at Exit 212 between Alabama 145 and County Road 43. The site was chosen from a dozen in the state seeking to win the project. The Alabama Farm Center will include a 5,000-seat air-conditioned arena, 150,000 square foot exhibition building, 400-stall horse barn, 400 recreational vehicle hookups and a variety of other barns and arenas. ( JMR+H Architects) At a time when economic development efforts in the state focus on advanced manufacturing like automotive and aerospace or on expanding the tech economy, Alabama Farmers Agriculture Foundation President
Jimmy Parnell said there are other sectors worth investing in. “The Alabama Farm Center will enhance the two largest industries in Alabama — agriculture and tourism,” Parnell told Alabama NewsCenter. “As a regional event center, it will attract visitors from across the country for a variety of activities, including livestock and horse shows, festivals, meetings and consumer expos.” Parnell said the project will make other significant contributions to the state. “The Alabama Farm Center also will support education and youth development by providing young people a first-class venue to learn, interact and compete,” he said. “While the Alabama Farm Center at Alfa Centennial Park will serve the agriculture community, it will have positive impacts for the entire region as a destination for gatherings of all types.” The Alabama Farm Center will include a sheep and swine barn with a small animal judging arena. Preliminary images are likely to change. “The Alabama Farm Center will be an exciting new development for Alabama and, in particular, Chilton County and the surrounding area,” said Mark Brown, vice president of business retention and expansion with the Birmingham Business Alliance. “The site for the new facility in Chilton County is near the center of the state, and it will provide easy access for travelers from Alabama and far beyond, which will generate a substantial annual economic impact. We congratulate the leadership in Chilton County for this outstanding success.” Excitement among local leaders is palpable. “We are excited to finally be bringing to fruition a project that will forever change Chilton County and Central Alabama,” Matt Mims, vice chairman of the Chilton County Commission, said at the announcement. “Today, we embark on a journey that will long impact the future generations of agriculture.” The Alabama Farmers Agriculture Foundation began exploring the economic feasibility of a large, multi-function event facility about two years ago. The foundation, which supports youth livestock shows, college scholarships and other agricultural education activities, hired Markin Consulting of Minnesota to evaluate the potential of a regional livestock and event complex. Markin estimates livestock shows, rodeos, dog shows, festivals and consumer events could keep the facility booked over 300 days each year. Clanton Mayor Billy Joe Driver believes the facility will be a huge draw to the center of the state. “With the potential average attendance

around 800,000 per year, central Alabama is sure to see an influx from the hospitality industry,” he said. “This project will be a catalyst for growth and development for us all.” Perhaps best known for its world-class peaches, Chilton County is a strong agriculture county. The Alabama Farm Center will include an equestrian and livestock indoor arena. Preliminary images are likely to change. ( JMR+H Architects) “We would like to thank the Alabama Farmers Agriculture Foundation for recognizing the value that Chilton County holds in the agricultural sector of our economy,” said Whitney Barlow, executive director of the Chilton County Industrial Development Authority. “It is critical that we invest in our youth and enable them to reach their full potential with opportunities in career tech, workforce development, livestock skills, acquiring leadership responsibilities, as well as other experiences needed to be successful and productive.” Parnell, who also serves as president of the Alabama Farmers Federation and Alfa Insurance, said the new complex could become a major asset for the state. “There are few comparable ag centers in the United States, so this is a great opportunity for Alabama and Chilton County to attract visitors from across the region and country,” he said. “As the Alabama Farmers Federation prepares to celebrate its centennial in 2021, our board of directors has cast a vision to make the Alabama Farm Center the premier livestock and event center in the South.”

The plan is for the Farm Center to have 11 main structures, including an exhibition hall expected to be at least 150,000 square foot, livestock arena, equestrian arena, several specialized barns for different types of animals and smaller multiuse buildings that will be able to be booked for a number of events. ALFA plans to have at least one of the buildings completed by 2021 to have the centennial celebration. The Chilton Regional Research and Extension Center has been the site of important research for peaches, strawberries and kiwi. The Center is home to the Chilton County Master Gardeners Demonstration garden, which is open to the public during regular business hours. The Chilton County Extension Office also hosts several agriculture-related programs for both adults and children throughout the year.
AGRICULTURE
Agriculture has been a foundational industry for Chilton County since its founding. Most widely known for its peaches, the county is also home to cotton producers, vegetable farmers, strawberry patches, cornfields and animal farms. Each local high school has agriculture classes and FFA chapters that compete in animal judging on a yearly basis with Thorsby FFA advancing to the national level of competition on a regular basis. Agriculture will continue to play an important role in the future of Chilton County with the development of the Alabama Farm Center at ALFA Centennial Park near the Interstate 65, Exit 212. ALFA announced the project 2019 as a project to celebrate the company’s 100th anniversary. The project will be a joint project of the Alabama Farmers Federation, the City of Clanton, the Chilton County Commission and other partners. Grant funds may also be

plant employs 950 people and works to supply multiple automotive companies the precision and quality needed for their automobiles.” Additional industries throughout the county that continue to create a strong foundation of employment and growth for the county include O-Flex Southeast Anodizing, South Coast Paper, Stella Jones and West Frasier Lumber. The county continued to enjoy a low unemployment rate throughout 2019. The Chilton County Industrial Development Board is committed to working with K-12, Jefferson State Community College and statewide workforce initiatives to identify programs to implement in all sectors of education, according to Barlow. “We want to create a pipeline for both our existing industries and new growth,” she said. “Working with all sectors to identify the needs and training deficiencies is a key to the formula of a strong local economy.” Many of the county’s assets include St. Vincent’s Clanton location, Jefferson State Community College, a strong public education system, a cohesive government structure and a strong infrastructure system. Barlow acknowledges that while the industries are vital to the county’s economy, the quality of life and heartbeat of the community would be nonexistent without the small businesses throughout the area. “These individuals are those who believe in Chilton County and create a part of the formula for substantial economic growth,” Barlow said. “The small business sector is what captures our sales tax and stops the leakage into our neighboring counties. They are the pipeline to our medical, education, industry, restaurants and government. It is the cornerstone of any small community and is a strong staple of ours.”
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
While Chilton County is a tourist destination for many stopping on their route along Interstate 65, it is also home to individuals striving to see the county flourish and grow. The county is strategically located in the center of the state, and is considered roughly “halfway” between Birmingham and Montgomery on Interstate 65. The area is bountiful in agriculture with varieties of peaches available during the summer months, but it is also home to many businesses and industries that continue to grow and attract others from around the world. According to the county’s Industrial Development Authority’s executive director Whitney Barlow, there are many factors that go into creating a strong economic development setting, but location remains at the top of the list. “We [Chilton County] are located in the center of the state and can capture almost one-fifth of Alabama’s population within an hour’s drive,” Barlow said. “This makes our county a prime location for economic growth ... in advanced manufacturing, but also in other sectors of economic growth.” Chilton County’s existing industry, as well as the quality of life, will continue to create a strong foundation for sustained growth. The Farm Center project will build on large agriculture industry in the county. In terms of industry, the county’s largest employer currently is Adient, which continues to make strides in the automotive industry with one out of every three seats in the world of automobiles coming from an Adient facility. “They supply an excellent quality of product to the automotive industry by producing over 25,000,000 seats a year in their global locations,” Barlow said. “The Adient Clanton

songs from past decades. Each song also includes choreographed dance parts or skits performed by students. Jemison Intermediate is in the building stages of an outdoor pavilion that will be used as an outdoor learning opportunity. Fourth-grade students at Isabella High School show off their talents each February during Motown performances. Sports are a highlight for Thorsby and Maplesville high schools with both having very successful teams during recent football seasons. Maplesville High School, Thorsby High School, Verbena High School and Jemison Intermediate School each received Bicentennial grants in 2018 for remodeling and educational projects. The VHS project focused on preserving the school’s history and pursuing a designation as a historic landmark on the state historic registry. High School students have the option to attend classes on different campuses to take courses in specialty areas, such as culinary or STEM (science, technology, engineering and math.) Chilton County High School also offers
LEARNING & KNOWLEDGE
The Chilton County School System works to provide opportunities for students to excel in a number of areas. Clanton and Jemison schools provide engineering classes for kindergarten to 12th through Project Lead the Way classes. With 7,877 students, The Chilton County School System offers preschool through 12th grade throughout the county. K-12 schools serve Maplesville, Thorsby, Isabella and Verbena. Clanton and Jemison each have an elementary, intermediate, middle and high school. In 2018, Clanton Intermediate School was one of only 50 schools in the state to be recognized for the previous year’s third grade Scantron Performance Series Reading Assessment. The school was awarded $20,000. Both CIS and Maplesville High School elementary grades have a house sorting, team building model. Students are divided into teams (houses) across multiple grades and compete for points awarded for doing good. Each February local high schools celebrate the acting and musical talents of its students with Blast from the Past. Students sing popular

Advanced Placement courses. Preschool classes have been added at every school through the state First Class Preschool program. High school students have the opportunity to take a number of dual enrollment opportunities through the Chilton-Clanton campus of Jefferson State Community College. The newest class added to the list of options is a year-long EMT Basic program. Many juniors and seniors in high school choose to pursue hands-on training and certifications in their field through programs at LeCroy Career Technical Center. The center offers everything from welding and automotive work to cosmetology and nursing. The center also houses the school district’s STEM Academy offering a variety of engineering, technology and robotics classes.
As a part of the simulated workforce model, students apply to the program as sophmores.
Jefferson State Community College Chilton-Clanton Campus The Chilton-Clanton Campus of Jefferson State Community College was established in 2008 through a partnership between the college and the City of Clanton. The city wanted a conference center, and the college wanted to establish a campus in Clanton. The satellite location initially began with 62 students meeting in an existing building before the campus was constructed. Now, this onebuilding campus is 30,000 square feet and offers courses in required core subjects as well as fine arts and nursing. Several dual-enrollment classes are also offered to local high school students. More than 750 students take courses at the campus. More than 120 of these students are high school students taking dual-enrollment courses.. available for viewing by students, faculty and the public. The Clanton Conference and Performing Arts Center features a performance hall, which seats 608 people, a 13,000-square-feet exhibit hall with a catering kitchen and three classroom-style rooms ideal for trainings and conference breakout sessions. A wide range of events have come to the venue, including business conferences, local graduations, dance competitions, dance recitals, proms and wedding receptions. The Alabama Cooperative Extension System Beekeepers workshop is held there on an annual basis, and it was the site of the Alabama Master Gardeners Association Spring Conference for 2019. An annual art show and March Gourd Madness hosted by the Chilton County Arts Council are also hosted here. Its proximity to Interstate 65 also makes it a convenient location to hold an event.
LCTC is home to the county’s STEM Academy. Classes include robotics, engineering research and design, Introduction to Engineering Design, and Computer Science. Students in the programs at LeCroy are prepared to attend college to pursue a degree in their field or go straight into the workforce. Night classes in certain programs, such as welding, allow working adults to further their skills. LeCroy Career Technical Center also supports Project Lead the Way, an engineering program, in kindergarten through 12th grades in Jemison and Clanton schools. For adults wanting or needing additional training and skills, Jefferson State Community College offers an Adult Education Program at the Chilton Clanton campus. The program offers opportunities to work at an individual’s pace with a variety of instruction options are offered. The program is offered free of charge. Space for workforce development facilities near Exit 212 is a part of future plans for the areas and are expected to be developed alongside the Alabama Farm Center project.

LeCroy Career Technical Center, a part of Chilton County Schools, offers a number of vocational programs to prepare students for their career of choice after high school. Partnerships with local law enforcement and fire departments offer academies in fire and law enforcement. Students in each program receive hand-on training in real world settings, whether doing body repair work on a car in the garage or doing hair and nails in the on-site salon. LCTC follows the simulated workforce model. Students apply to the program and go through an interview process. Selected students are then notified before the start of their junior year in high school. A student leader is also selected for each class to serve in a manager role. Safety guidelines are also taught and followed just as they would be on the job. The programs are designed to prepare students for certification in their field.

Chilton County’s medical offices and state-of-the-art hospital mean residents can have many of their medical needs taken care of without leaving the county. Clanton, Jemison and Maplesville each have primary care physicians. Opticians, chiropractors and other specialists can be found in Clanton and Jemison. Several specialists rent office space at St. Vincent’s Chilton’s outpatient area, including those in cardiology, gastroenterology, general surgery, nephrology, obstetrics/gynecology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, podiatry, pulmonology and medical oncology/ hematology. The hospital also features a 24/7
Emergency Department, advanced imaging and diagnostic services, stress testing, pulmonary function testing, inpatient and intensive care services and laboratory services. Technological advances through telemedicine have helped St. Vincent’s Chilton provide a higher level of care for local stroke victims. In 2019, the hospital added a sleep lab where medical professional can diagnose sleep disorders. Urgent care facilities are also available in Clanton. A number of elder care services, including nursing home, assisted living and home health services, are also located in the county.

through annual art festivals and shows through the Chilton County Arts Council with headquarters in Clanton. The Chilton County Art Festival is held in July at the Clanton Conference and Performing Arts Center on the Jefferson State ChiltonClanton Campus. Local art is also often on display in the windows of the Arts Council office in downtown Clanton. The Arts Guild also encourages creativity beyond the canvas through March Gourd Madness and Another Man’s Treasure art shows. The Central Alabama Performing Arts Guild provides a place for residents of all ages to have a performing arts outlet. Each year the Guild performs a summer play and produces a dramatized radio play on 98.3 WSMX-LP. In 2019, the group also hosted an original puppet play and a poetry slam. The Guild also supports the Jazz radio show “In the Mood,” which plays locally on 98.3 WSMX-LP. Chilton County’s young twirlers and dancers are a highlight of each year’s Christmas tree lighting in Clanton.
ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT
Chilton County has a number of talented musicians and artists. This talent is showcased in events throughout the year. Local and regional musicians play at events such as Peach Jam. Some local musicians may also be heard at the third Thursday jam sessions at Pokana Talahassi in downtown Clanton. Each year thousands of people come to Verbena for En Fuego, a free concert featuring some of Contemporary Christian Music’s most popular bands. Past bands have included Third Day, For King and Country, Tenth Avenue North, Skillet, TobyMac, Kari Jobe and Kutless. Visual artists promote their work

The downtown districts in Chilton County remain an ideal place to find products and services offered by locallyowned establishments. A number of boutiques, restaurants and hair salons make downtown Clanton a great place to be. Both Jemison and Clanton boast family businesses that have been in operation for generations. Joining these pillars of the downtown districts are new restaurants that have opened in recent years giving residents more options than ever before. Clanton cuisine boasts everything from Chinese to Italian to barbecue, while Jemison offers a sports grill and Mexicaninspired fare. Maplesville’s restaurants feature barbeque and Mexican food. Maplesville also offers locally-owned
boutiques, hairs salons and a grocery store. Thorsby has opportunities to support small business owners through its restaurants and gifts shop/pharmacy as well. Each town also has local florists available to fill all the residents floral needs. Each stop along Interstate 65 also offers delicious options, some highlighting local fare such as peaches and pecans. Restaurant offerings range from country cooking to Mediterranean street food. Local boutiques have been expanding in the recent years moving into larger preexisting locations in downtown Clanton. Jewelry and antique stores in downtown Clanton give unique options for finding the right gift for someone special in one’s life. Major activity can be found along Highway 31 as it runs through the heart of both of Chilton County’s largest cities.
