A note from the Editor The outdoors are calling to many Chilton County residents now that summer is drawing near. In this issue, we highlight one local group that created a way to enjoy the outdoors by combining yoga with a trip to a local farm. Sessions can be a little unpredictable when four legged Joyanna participants are added to the mix.

Love No matter how old you are there is always something new to experience. Myra Patterson took her first flight lesson at the age of 80. While she said she does not plan on getting her pilot’s license, the flight marked the realization of a dream she had for some time.

When the guys of Buzz:30 get together, it’s all about friends, family and fun — well, it seems like family, even if the band members are not blood related.

Both fans and band members alike bond over the music that results when they play.

“We’re just a group of friends that have a reason to hang out,” said bass player and founding member Brad Carter.

The music genres can vary, and the venue can be a bar, a wedding reception or anything in between.

This variety extends even to the band members. It’s anybody’s guess as to who will turn out to play a gig. But Joshua Inman, Brannon Burnett and Brad Carter perform as Buzz:30 at Relay for Life. the key ingredient is always a good time.

“We’re from here, and a lot of people know us,” said lead guitarist Joshua Inman.

Carter and Inman are joined by Brannon Burnett (lead vocal and guitar), Chris Bushey (lead vocals and lead — BRAD CARTER guitar), Allen (aka “Marvin”) Arrington (drums), Eric Keith (drums), Micah Ward (guitar) and Curt Roberts (drums).

Not all of the band members play at the same time, as each show has its own representation of exactly what and who makes up Buzz:30 at that given moment. But, that also lends itself to the carefree spirit of the band.

“It’s just kind of a revolving door,” Carter explained.

What would eventually become Buzz:30 started out in 2007 as a band called Bubba and the Po Boys, which consisted of Inman, Carter, Burnett, Ward and Roberts.

That year the band started providing live music at events for the Chilton County Cruisers, a group that hosted car shows. By year’s end, the name change occurred when Arrington started playing drums.

The name Buzz:30 originated from a saying amongst friends while hanging out at a local creek near Auburn, which, when asked what time it was, one would answer,

“It’s buzz 30!” Carter, Inman and Arrington are equally credited with the idea.

Inman further described the phrase as “the rite of passage to open a beer.”

Now during concerts, Burnett prompts the crowd with the question, “What time is it?” At which point all the fans yell back, “Buzz 30!”

The group has built up quite a following playing local bars, weddings, class reunions, dance competitions, Relay for Life fundraisers, Minooka Park rides and other events. They once played a benefit show for tornado victims of Cullman County.

“It’s almost like a family reunion when we play,” Carter said.

Inman admits there’s still a little adrenaline whenever they hit the stage. This release of emotion translates to the crowd and yields a laid-back vibe.

“The biggest thing about playing music to me is giving people an opportunity to take a break from life,” Burnett said. “A moment to relax, to forget about how mundane life can be and enjoy the moment.”

The majority of the band’s material consists of covers.

In Low Places” alongside other country and classic rock — the likes of Ted Nugent, ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd or Hank Williams Jr. When Bushey joined, he brought a more diverse mix of ’80s, ’90s and Motown into the group.

And there are a few original tunes, too, most notably Burnett’s “Beautiful Thing.”

As for influences, they are a bit more local.

The band members look up to local musicians Southern Pride, Rick Lawrence and Walon Smith.

Burnett mentioned his grandfather, Dr. Ralph Brannon, former pastor of Clanton First Baptist Church and Gospel singer; his uncle, Phil Brannon, pianist; and his parents, Karl and Patsy Burnett.

“They always encouraged me to make my gift known,” he said.

The band shows a deep appreciation for those who have helped them along the way, including Todd Bowen of Red Zone, Rusty Keith of Friends Steakhouse where they still play regularly, Christine Thomas, previous owner of Friends and local sound guys Jason Cleckley and Dale Scott.

Needless to say, the band members meet no strangers.

“We were all buddies, and it’s been a good way for us to keep in touch and tell the same old stories and make new stories, really. It’s been fun,” said Carter. “It’s nice to be from here and play with your friends and for your friends.”

Just because you advance a little in age does not mean you have to stop having fun.

Just ask Myra Patterson.

The Chilton County resident wanted to do something special for her 80th birthday.

One day, Patterson was telling Senior Connection director Vanessa McKinney that she had wanted to take a flying lesson.

“(Vanessa) says ‘we’ll do it on your birthday.

We’ll have you a party out at the hangar or here (at Senior Connection) if you want to.’ It was so cold, so we ended up having it here.”

McKinney did not have to go far to find a pilot who could take Patterson up for a flying lesson. She needed only ask fellow Senior Connection member Alvin

Teel, who said he has been flying for about 50 years now.

“It was a boyhood dream,” Teel said. “I always wanted to fly. When I got out of the military, I got to the point where I could start taking flying lessons. I progressed through the different stages to become an instructor with the help of the G.I. Bill. I started teaching in 1973.”

So in 1997, Teel purchased a small Cessna airplane.

“I just have the urge to fly. It’s a thrill for me. Then I got Myra Patterson smiles for a photo before taking flight for her lesson.

a thrill out of teaching other people. I didn’t want to become like a commercial airline pilot because I had a good job.”

Patterson and Teel already knew each other. After all, they finished high school together.

“Probably four or five months before her birthday came up, she came to me and said ‘Alvin, on my 80th birthday, I want to take my first flying lesson,’” Teel said. “I said ‘all right.’ We did. We went out to the airport, and everybody gathered up.

We went up, flew around a little bit, and she really got a kick out of it.”

Patterson said her two daughters and McKinney worked out the details of the party.

“I got with her daughters,” McKinney said. “We planned on having (her party) at the hangar, but the weather wouldn’t cooperate. The girls brought her a cake, and we brought everybody out there.”

On Jan. 16, about 75 people met at the Chilton County Airport to bid Patterson a good and safe journey.

“We went out to the hangar to give her a bon voyage,” McKinney said. “It was thrilling to watch them. Alvin did a little tip as he came around and scared us all half to death because we thought she was a goner for sure.”

me — by six months,” Patterson said. “It was something I have never done. I have been up in a plane many times, but going in a small plane is so different.”

Teel, who is 79 going on 80 himself, said he has given flying lessons to about 40 or 50 people. Since this was Patterson’s first lesson, he did not plan on doing anything too serious.

“On a first go around, you don’t do anything erratic,” he said. “It’s more of a break-in flight. You go around and do a little sightseeing tour, do a few turns and let them hold the controls. We stayed up about 20 minutes, which is typical for first flight.

“First thing is you don’t want to make them sick. I’ve had them to freeze up on me. I took one guy up years ago, and I banked the plane just a little bit and boy he was scared. He said ‘take me back, take me back.’ He locked up right quick.”

Even so, Teel could not help teasing Patterson just a tad while in the middle of her lesson.

“I had my hands on the steering wheel, and Alvin said ‘Myra, it’s all yours,’” Patterson said. “I said ‘please don’t take your hands off that wheel.’”

The two flew over Senior Connection and different parts of the county during the lesson.

“It was absolutely wonderful,” Patterson said. “It was so beautiful, I asked Alvin if he would carry me back up and let me take pictures of the landscape. The landscape is gorgeous.”

“She loved it,” Teel said. “She couldn’t wait to get back and tell everyone about it — she really enjoyed it.”

Though she said it was the “greatest gift ever,” Patterson said she does not want to take any more flying lessons, though she does want to go back up in the plane to take photos.

What can top a flying lesson on your 80th birthday?

“The only thing is I may talk with the fire chief and see if I can get on a fire truck,” Patterson said.

Want to just sit on top of one? Climb the ladder? Run a hose?

“I haven’t really decided,” she said. “I need to think on that one.”

A local farm may be the last place one might expect to find a yoga class but that’s exactly what’s happening at Asher Farm through a partnership with Southern Roots Yoga.

In addition to the location, the classes feature another unique aspect — goats.

After finding a spot for their yoga mat, attendees are given containers of goat food to attract the animals.

Asher Farm is owned by Anita and Wayne Andrews.

The farm has Mini-Saanen and Nigerian Dwarf dairy goats, and there were plenty of baby goats when the yoga sessions first started. However, the youngest ones stayed on the fringes during the first day.

Anita Andrews initially approached Southern Roots Yoga owner Jennifer Kieras after hearing about yoga classes that had incorporated goats. The concept was a new one for Kieras, but she was excited for an opportunity to take yoga beyond the studio.

“I think it is a really fun way to bring awareness to yoga and sustainable living,” Kieras said.

The two developed waivers for participants, waited for the weather to cooperate and then picked a day to start.

Andrews said she wanted the yoga sessions on the farm to be “something fun and different for Clanton.”

“The one thing that we hope we can do with this farm is keep creating things where people can come and just enjoy the farm with us and share it,” Andrews said.

“People are so removed from farm life and from food source, so we just really hope we can find different ways to share this with people. There is a miracle going on on a farm almost everyday ... The cherry tree blooming, or the birth of a baby goat or hatching a chicken egg, even just a seed sprouting — every day you see some kind of little miracle and we just hope to share that.”

Each session starts with a time of petting goats and getting acquainted. Once the yoga starts, the goats mill around, looking for more food or trying to get in on the action.

In planning the yoga, Kieras focused on a sequence that would allow for “a lot of interaction with the animals, a lot of grounding poses, gentle poses where it is safe for the goats and the people.”

“I am a big believer in sustainable living and farming, so any time we can connect with the animals and get back to the natural way of the way agriculture is supposed to be in our society, I think yoga fits in really well with that because it is all about balance,” Kieras said. “When our food system is out of balance, our bodies are out of balance, when our bodies are out of balance our food system tends to be out of balance, so it’s very connected.”

She encouraged attendees to look behind them before doing any stretching poses, so they did not kick a goat.

“Since they are animals, it’s a little bit of a wild card,” Kieras said.

The goal for each session is really to have fun and just be outside. “Obviously, today is just about fun, the form in yoga doesn’t really matter, Keiras said during the first session. “If something doesn’t feel good don’t do it. If you find one or two poses that work for you and you don’t like what we are currently doing, just go back to those one or two poses that you find comfortable.�

As she started a goat came up to stand beside her. “This one is so cute,� Keiras said. “I love this one.�

At one point, the goat decided to participate by jumping on Keiras’ back.

During each session, Keiras explains how to do each pose as she demonstrates it.

Sometimes during a session at the farm, ducks from the pond will come waddling up, looking for leftover food.

After a session at Asher Farm, Lindsey Sammons said she had done cardio yoga in the past, but the goats got her interested in coming to the event. “I love animals,� she said.

She enjoyed having a different approach to the yoga poses and stretches.

Yoga has been a mode of relaxation for Sammons. “It’s very calming,� Sammons said.

Hannah Smith said it was her first time doing yoga outside. Relatively new to yoga, Smith said her love of

animals is what interested her in the yoga on the farm opportunities.

“It just brings a smile to your face when they (the goats) come up and try to love on you,” Smith said.

Goats have been a part of Asher Farm for the past three years.

“I wanted to get to more of a self-sustaining way to live,” Andrews said. “I had been making soap and I wanted to get into making goat’s milk soap and goat’s milk products ... I got my first two and fell in love.”

The number of goats on the farm has grown to 30.

As the farm continues to develop, Andrews plans to apply for Grade A dairy certification in order to sell goat cheese.

In addition to goats and ducks, the farm also has chickens and a raised bed garden.

Southern Roots Yoga opened in 2018 and focuses on wellness –based yoga.

“When I moved back to Clanton about a year and a half ago there wasn’t much of a wellness yoga- based presence, so I really wanted to start up a yoga studio because it helped me so much in my life with my medical issues,” Kieras said.

Doing yoga enabled Kieras to avoid having a third spine surgery. This increased her interest, and she began to look into the science behind it.

“I started to study the neuroscience and how it benefits healing, then it just went from there,” Kieras said.

Yoga opportunities at the farm are anticipated to be held as often as the weather makes possible through the spring and early summer months.

Southern Roots Yoga is also looking at other out-ofstudio offerings with the possibility of events at wineries for yoga and wine, yoga at produce farms or hot yoga.

Hot yoga is “in a heated room, it is usually over 100 degrees ... you can just go outside in Alabama (during the summer), I don’t need a studio for that,” Keiras said.

Hydrangeas, with their pink or blue cloudshaped flowers and large, soft-green leaves, compose images of lazy summers in the shade.

However, this describes only one plant, the bigleaf hydrangea, in a large and varied group.

All hydrangeas are resilient and hardy plants for southern landscapes.

Most people are familiar with the large, showy pink or blue flowers of the bigleaf, or French, hydrangea, but look at the entire genus to find a variety of shrub sizes, textures, flower shapes, and colors. Although widely planted in the Southeast, hydrangeas have their origins in both southern Asia and North America. The two Alabama native species are smooth hydrangea and oakleaf hydrangea, the latter discovered by John Bartram in 1791.

Smooth hydrangea cultivars, such as ‘Annabelle’, are more easily found than the original wild species. On the other hand, oakleaf hydrangea (H. quercifolia) is easily found as either its many cultivars or the wild species. Its bold summer foliage, impressive and sometimes lacy flower clusters, fall color, and winter stem character put it in high regard for a shady shrub border.

Bigleaf hydrangea, gracing the landscapes of many homes, originally came from France by way of Japan. Bigleaf hydrangea has many

common names such as snowball hydrangea, French hydrangea, common hydrangea, garden hydrangea, and hortensia.

The Color

White, pink, or blue—the color is up to you.

Well, not really. Gardeners only have a color choice with bigleaf and serrated hydrangeas, and several factors influence the outcome. Bloom color and intensity depend on the specific cultivar, weather, plant health, and soil. Of these, soil pH is the strongest influence gardeners can adjust. Cultivar selection and proper care and maintenance help ensure the chosen outcome.

Blue or pink blooms depend on soil pH and corresponding available aluminum. At low pH levels (acid soils), aluminum is readily available to the plant, and flowers become blue. At high pH ranges (more alkaline soils), aluminum is less available, and flowers are pink. Want pink flowers? Add lime to raise soil pH. Want blue flowers? Add sulfur to lower soil pH.

Hardiness and Cold Damage

Bigleaf hydrangea is the most cold-sensitive species. It suffers with early or late freezes because the flower buds have a weak dormancy.

Surprise warm weather in winter or early spring causes the buds to emerge from dormancy, grow, peach living 21

and become more susceptible to freeze damage.

This damage results in fewer or no flowers because this year’s flower bud grows on a stem bud formed last summer.

The remedy? Site and cultivar selection. If this type of weather is common in your landscape, plant bigleaf hydrangea on northern and eastern slopes under tall pines to reduce the temperature fluctuations that cause early bud break. Or, choose resilient cultivars that either bloom later or produce new buds for the current season.

Site Selection

Hydrangeas are relatively easy to grow in well-drained soils containing plenty of organic matter. Like many southerners, they prefer warm, morning sun and cooler, afternoon shade. Avoid planting bigleaf, oakleaf, and smooth hydrangeas in hot, dry, exposed sites. Panicle hydrangea is the one species that looks better in full to part sun.

While many hydrangeas benefit from shade, planting any shrub under a large, established tree during the growing season hinders shrub establishment. Large trees require and consume enormous amounts of water in a single day. Newly planted shrubs often cannot successfully compete with them. The gardener will then find it difficult to supplement the water needs of the new shrub.

Planting

Place plant in center of hole. Dig the planting hole 2 feet wider than the plant’s root ball and only as deep as the root ball itself. In heavy soils, consider preparing a planting bed instead of single planting holes. Amend any hydrangea planting with compost to create a mound. This raised planting allows better drainage for roots.

Fall planting time is best because it gives the plant several months to establish a new root system before blooming. Early spring is the next best planting time. Extra attention to watering is important if planting in summer or for any new plants in a raised planting.

Water

To look and perform their best, bigleaf and smooth hydrangeas need more water than do their relatives. Becoming tattered in appearance during periods of drought, they still survive with only minor pruning needed to restore their form.

The large, soft leaves lose water quickly, and the hot sun wilts them. Even well-watered plants may appear wilted with too much sun or heat.

Afternoon shade is a must for both bigleaf and smooth hydrangeas. One inch of water per week, either by rainfall or irrigation, is recommended; of course, mulching helps conserve water loss and cools the root system.

While all hydrangeas prefer consistent soil moisture, be careful not to overwater them.

Oakleaf hydrangea is especially sensitive to soggy soils. Root rot on this hydrangea is a common problem in poorly drained soils or after lengthy rains. Even a large, established oakleaf colony can die from this in just a few weeks.

Consider potential drainage issues at planting time and correct before a problem starts.

Fertility

Different hydrangeas have different fertility needs. Perform a soil test to best determine soil pH and nutritional requirements. Bigleaf hydrangea responds to several light fertilizer applications during the growing season. Divide soil test recommendations into three applications in March, May and June. Panicle and oakleaf hydrangeas benefit from April and June applications, while smooth hydrangea needs just one application in late winter. Do not remove mulch when fertilizing, but water at the time of application to help dissolve fertilizer.

Remember that nutrient aluminum affects flower color on bigleaf and serrated hydrangea.

If you want blue flowers, use fertilizers low in phosphorus. The phosphorus level is indicated by the middle number (12-4-8) in fertilizer

descriptions. Phosphorus ties up aluminum, making it unavailable for root uptake and leads to pink flowers.

Note: Periodic soil tests are recommended to ensure that phosphorus levels remain at acceptable levels. Too much soil phosphorus can cause plant injury.

Pruning

Understanding flower development for each species is helpful. Some hydrangeas bloom on “old wood” while others bloom on “new wood.” Bearing flowers on stems produced from last year’s buds describes blooms on old wood. Flower buds forming on this year’s growth appear on new wood.

Prune shrubs that bloom on old wood shortly after current flowering to avoid removing developing buds. The next year’s flower buds begin forming in August. If a shrub blooms on new wood, prune in late winter or in spring to stimulate new growth for additional blooms.

Annual, general maintenance on bigleaf and oakleaf hydrangeas is recommended. Remove all dead wood and cut about one-quarter to one-half of the older stems to the ground. This improves plant vigor, overall shape, and bloom volume. Remember to prune these two species soon after flowering. Bigleaf and oakleaf bloom on old wood. A few bigleaf hydrangeas bloom on both old and new wood.

Choose these if you live in an area prone to late frosts.

Both smooth and panicle hydrangeas bloom on new wood.

Cut smooth hydrangea 6 to 12 inches from the ground, or at half its height, every year in late winter or early spring.

The height you choose to prune these hydrangeas is strictly personal preference. Pruning after initial flowering can even stimulate a second flower period. Panicle hydrangea is most effective in tree form. Remove lower suckers and up to onehalf of older stems for greater flowering.

Propagation

Bigleaf and panicle hydrangeas are easy to propagate by layering. In early to midsummer, dig a trench near the plant and bend a flexible branch down into it. For better rooting, scratch the bark area that has soil contact. Cover the wounded branch section with soil and either pin it or weigh it down with a brick. Six inches to 1 foot of branch tip should stick out of the ground uncovered.

Smooth and oakleaf hydrangeas can also be propagated by layering, but their colonizing habit, spreading by underground stems, makes them easy to propagate by division during the dormant season. Propagation by division is simply digging and separating the new sprout away from the colony.

Disease and Insect Pests

Hydrangeas are susceptible to leaf spots, blights, wilts, and powdery mildew. Insect pests on hydrangea include aphids, leaf tiers, rose chafers, oyster scale, and red spider mites.

These pests are uncommon and may be a sign of another problem causing plant stress. Powdery mildew is common on some varieties, but it is rarely life threatening. As always, gardeners should make cultivar choices based on resistance and desired traits. A little research goes a long way in making the best selection for your garden. peach living 23

Moore receives Distinguished Citizen Award The Chilton County Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that Richard Moore, former chairman, president and chief executive office of Peoples Southern Bank in Clanton has been selected to receive the Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Citizen Award for his many contributions to the residents of Chilton County.

Prior to becoming a full-time banker in 1994, Moore practiced law and served as an officer and director of Peoples Southern Bank. He is a former chairman of the Alabama Bankers Association, member of the Alabama Bankers Association board of directors and the University of Alabama President’s Cabinet. Mr. Moore also served multiple terms on the board of directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, Birmingham Branch.

Moore received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Alabama in 1973 and a juris doctorate

degree from the University Of Alabama School Of Law in 1976.

Richard Moore served his community for many years as a member of the City of Clanton and Chilton County Industrial Development Boards, president of the Chilton County Chamber of Commerce and the Clanton Lions Club.

According to Chamber of Commerce President Billy Singleton, “Richard Moore has served the people of Chilton County for many years and is a testament to the concept of civic involvement and commitment to his community and fellow citizens. Meetings are every Monday evening at 5:30 p.m. beginning with a free dinner and followed by a large-group meeting at 6:30 p.m. Men’s and women’s small groups meet at 7:30 p.m. Celebration Place, a pre-covery program for children ages 5-12, meets at the same time and teaches children at an early age how to deal with hurts, habits and hangups that happen in their lives.
