D.J. Hines was born to be a DJ. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, D.J. enjoyed learning new dance moves.

“I was the kid growing up in middle school and high school that looked up all the dances on YouTube and on the internet, and I would practice them in front of my computer so that way when I went to the dances I knew how to do them,” D.J. said.

When he went to a birthday party in 2012, they started playing some of the dances that he knew all the moves to. He started dancing and teaching the ones around him, the DJ at the party approached him and asked if he had ever considered being one.

D.J. has been working for six years now. His first gig was in November 2012 at a wedding in Rome, Georgia.

DJ2 Entertainment was launched in June 2015 and recently celebrated their third-year anniversary.

D.J. is 28 years old and married to Ashley Hines with their first child Nora Hines on the way.

The business has been built up more with each year and continues to thrive. He has never received less than a fivestar rating on Facebook for any event he has ever been a apart of.

DJ2 Entertainment has been a part of almost any kind of event imagined from elementary to middle to high school functions, prom, college events, weddings, bridal shows, socials, grand openings, Halloween and holiday parties, Trick or Treat the Streets in Clanton, Cardo Swag once a month at the YMCA and was the MC for the 2018 Peach Jam. He also does community and outreach events, such as the 5K Harper’s Heart run in Gardendale every year, that they donate their services to.

There is really no limit to what music can be played at any event.

“When you book us for an event you can really structure your music and event however you want with us,” D.J. said.

He likes to be very flexible in what he does and is willing to accommodate in whichever way he can.

“I am here to serve you, you just tell me how I can do that, and we will put all the pieces together,” D.J. said.

D.J. goes out of his way to find a clean version of a song or edit explicit content to make everything he plays family friendly.

Customizable mash-ups are also available if needed such as for a wedding for a bride and groom if they want more than one song played during their first dance. This is all included when he is booked for an event with no additional 6 peach living

His biggest challenge is that he is the only DJ on their staff, so it is hard for him to accommodate everyone all the time which is hard because he loves doing what he does by making people happy and being a part of their special event.

“When people call and want D.J.’s services they don’t want us to send someone else, they want D.J.,” said his wife Ashley.

When doing a wedding while the bride is walking down the aisle or the first dance, he tries his best to make it as perfect as possible with seamless transitions because he knows he only gets one shot. One way he does this is by keeping a complete back-up library on his phone in case his computer crashes or something goes wrong where he can pick right back up until he gets the computer back up and running.

There is really no where he would not go. He has been to Rome, Georgia; Orlando, Florida; Nashville, Tennessee; Smokey Mountains and more. Within a four-hour driving distance or a 350 mile round-trip there is no additional charge, anything over that would be added.

He hopes that his audience will have a great time and enjoy themselves along with wanting to leave them with a lasting experience. Making sure everyone has a good time even if they are not a dancer is important to him.

One of his favorite memories was when he did a wedding in Tate, Georgia for a Disney-themed wedding for a bride who had actually been one of the Disney princesses.

It was a ballroom-themed wedding and is one he will always remember.

children and encouraging them to dance for giveaway prizes. It’s where children can come and have a good time without it just being candy and dressing up.

D.J. did not want to forget the backbone of DJ2 Entertainment and his partner in crime, his wife Ashley Hines. “DJ2 Entertainment would not have gotten off the ground as successfully as it did if it hadn’t been for her,” D.J. said.

When he met her and came to live in a place like Chilton County it was really a big part in his business taking off with the small town atmosphere.

Central Alabama Performing Arts Guild welcomes locals of all ages students.

“That’s one of the things that I’m proud of about the Guild,” Mary said. “We afford students of all ages the opportunity to perform and we support them with instruction to get to performance level.”

Some might know Mike by his radio name, Scott Michaels, from his days at Magic 96 or from his current program, “In the Mood,” a big band style radio show put on by the Guild. You can hear him swingin’ on 98.3 WSMXLP, broadcast from LeCroy Career Technical Center; on Alabama State University radio, 90.7 WVAS (wvasfm.org); or on Jazz Hall Radio, 91.1 FM (jazzhall.com, the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame’s website).

The Guild also produces a dramatized radio play each year. In April, they performed “The Shadow: The Blind Beggar Dies” and “Dick Tracy: The Case of the Big Top Murders.”

Mike is a jazz guitarist whose current projects include The Usual Suspects and a smaller jazz combo, The Prime Suspects. The Usual Suspects utilize a rhythm section, horn players and singers, while the latter features guitar, woodwinds, bass and drums with wife, Mary, as the singer.

“We play at senior centers in Chilton County, Shelby County and Jefferson County,” Mary said, noting the big band and swing music styles are adored by the older generation.

“We don’t charge anything. We just want to encourage people of all ages to pursue music in their lives, whether it’s professionally or recreationally,” Mary said.

Guild Vice President Sarah Jackson recalls her first theatrical production in elementary school when, at age 8, she played Little Red Riding Hood.

Jackson, originally from Louisville, Kentucky, grew up to major in theater at the University of Montevallo and teach children’s theater.

“My parents were both invested in the arts, so I grew up in a home full of music and art,” said Jackson.

She is now director of Creative Minds Classical Co-op in Clanton, a home-school cooperative where students can attend classes together in a structured environment.

It was Mary who approached Sarah about joining the Guild.

“When she expressed her vision for the Guild, I fell in love with the idea and I joined,” Sarah said. “As we get more people to join, our goal is to add more performing arts programs.”

Sarah expressed appreciation for many of the local young people she has had an opportunity to work with thus far.

“We are so impressed by their talent and intelligence,” she said.

Recently the group presented a theatrical production, “Play On” by Rick Abbot at the Jemison Municipal Complex.

Featured guest artist will be trumpeter Chuck King, a member of the Usual Suspects who is involved in band programs at Helena High School and Hoover High School. Also on hand will be Lorie Flanegan, teacher from All About the Dance Alabama.

There will be food trucks and an art show.

Attendees can expect to hear old-fashioned swinging jazz, Dixieland, big band and New Orleansstyle jazz.

“This is going to be the type of music you can dance to,” Mike said.

The Usual Suspects have open rehearsals once a month at Senior Connection in Clanton, usually on the third Sunday from 4-6 p.m. It’s an “open-door policy” where everyone is welcome to drop by, sit down and listen or even join in and play along on an instrument.

“We have new players and new vocalists coming in that are not as familiar with the (big band) style, but they’re willing to give it a go,” Mary said. “We have a 9-year-old vocalist.”

Tree care Bark beetles and your pines

All green plants are food for other creatures! I am repeatedly reminded of this statement from one of my botany professors almost 40 years ago. I really do not mind this statement as I am busy eating a beautiful salad, admiring recently canned vegetables or picking an abundance of corn from my garden. However, I do not like this statement if it is a chipmunk eating recently planted bulbs or hornworms working on my tomato plants. Today, I would like to talk to you about bark beetles and your Southern Pine trees.

You probably have read stories or heard on the nightly news about how Southern Pine Beetles ‘could’ destroy Alabama’s timber industry. Remember the key word: ‘could.’ A whole host of things could happen tomorrow that would change our lives forever, but probably won’t. My good friends, please do not let 16 peach living

anyone steal your joy. Life is too good to worry about things that may or may not happen. Now that we have solved that issue, let me change our attention to the beetles. In Alabama, we have six Southern Yellow Pines growing in our forests. They are commonly know by these names; longleaf, shortleaf, slash, loblolly, Virginia and spruce. These trees are easily reconizable by their cones, needles and bark as one studies them.

Each tree has its likes and dislikes as to where it preferes to grow, how much water it drinks and how much room it needs to survive. All of these trees are considered pioneer species. A pioneer species is one that if all of the vegetation is removed from a property and the property is left alone, the pioneer species close by will soon occupy the vacated property.

Another thing about pioneer species is that they produce a bunch of wind blown seeds. An openly grown loblolly pine can produce 20,000 – 25,000 seeds every year, and if they land on bare soil they will

germinate and start to grow. Growing 20,000, 4-inch tall trees on a baseball field is one thing, but when the trees are the size of the hood of your car, only 75-100 trees can grow on that same field. Nature thinned the weak trees out of the woods. Tree tops, or crowns, wrestle for sunlight. Tree roots wrestle for nutrients and water in the soil. The loser dies and the winner goes on to wrestle another day.

This is where the beetles come in to play. If all the trees had to do was wrestle for nutrients, water and sunlight that would be easy, but God created this world to be complex; to show His glory. In doing so, trees have added variables to wrestle with.

Fire, disease, storms, lightning, seasons, drought, all play their part in strengthening or weakening the trees, and then there is always something eating on them too.

Here in Alabama, we have basically three bark beetles. They are commonly known as the Black Turpentine, Ips Engraver, and Southern Pine beetles.

The Ips Engraver can be divided into the small (4 spined), the medium (5 spined), and the large (6 spined) beetles. The small beetle attacks the top third of the tree and the large attacks the bottom third.

Guess where the medium beetle attacks, yep the middle. These beetles are tiny from 1/16” to ¼” long.

The three Ips Engraver beetles only attack weak trees.

They finish off the already dying tree. If one notices pitch tubes (sap that looks like popcorn) in the center of a bark plate, they have the Ips beetle. Pulling the bark off an infected tree one will see ‘gallieries’ which form the letter “I” or “H.” Black Turpentine and Southern Pine Beetles (SPBs) begin killing dying trees, but if their numbers grow large enough, they will attack and kill healthy trees. The largest of the bark bettles at 5/16” long, the Black Turpentine beetle only attacks the bottom 6’ of a tree. Another way to identify this beetle is to notice a red/pink color to its pitch tubes. The most

destructive pest in Southern forests is the Southern Pine Beetle. Again it is small, up to 1/8” in length.

Living about one year, the female SPB can lay about six generations of beetles each year, here in Central Alabama. Two ways to identify SPBs is to look at pitch tubes and galleries. SPB pitch tubes are located in the crevases between the bark plates, and their galleries form the letter “S” under the bark. Should epidemic population levels arise, SPB damage could be catistrophic.

However, I can lessen the probability of bark beetles coming to my forest. Number one, if planting pine trees, plant the best tree for the site. Don’t plant loblolly on the mountain top and don’t plant longleaf in a wet bog. Number two, burn your pines at least every three years! In some places, the trees need fire every year. Sure some trees will die in the fire, but the strong will get stronger. Number three use herbicides.

A farmer grows more corn without weeds growing in the field. The same thing is true for trees. Hardwoods and privet are weeds in a pine plantation, and they are wrestling with the pines. Number four, thin the timber before it gets too crowded. Have your timber marked by a professional forester. Not only will you net more money - your forest will look better too.

Remember, bark beetles are part of creation, they are here to stay. The best way to protect your forest is to have strong vigorously growing trees. The best way to protect large yard trees is to protect their roots. Place a ‘Do Not Dig’ sign in your yard to remind yourself that if you cut that root, you may kill the tree.

The queens go to the Hope Lodge that helps cancer patients located in Birmingham often.

They like to give back in other ways, too, through fundraisers and local events.

School hat day proceeds often go to support Relay for Life.

Kim also shared how they had a booth set up at Peach Jam and were painting nails for a $1 to raise money.

She also enjoyed being in the Peach Parade. “I like getting glammed up and sitting on a float,� Kim said.

The director, Sunny Mays, makes sure the queens are involved in the community as she plans things for them to attend.

The Relay for Life queens read at the Jemison Library for their summer reading program, attended a Relay for Life cook-off at Alabama Power, Men in Pink dinner for Breast Cancer Awareness, Trick or Treat the Streets, Go for the Gold sponsored by the Eli Jackson Foundation for childhood cancer, Luminaria services to honor people battling who have lost their cancer battle, Christmas festivities and more.

They have definitely earned the name “The Working Queens” for a reason.

“I feel like we have more of a purpose,” Kim said. “I feel like we work more to help others.”

Throughout these encounters Kim said, “I have learned to always be kind and never take anything for granted.”

According to Kim, talking with cancer patients has been an eye-opening experience. Winning the title of Miss Relay for Life has given her opportunities to offer her helping hand and gain queen sisters who she gets to experience it with.

“You gain friendship and you gain helping others. It’s just kind of a win-win thing,” Kim said.

Kim is a senior year at Chilton County High School.

She enjoys English and is looking forward to taking anatomy.

After graduation, she hopes to become a Dermatologist to help people with skin problems.

“You always want to look your best and you don’t want 20 peach living

to be self-conscious about your body.”

She has grown this interest through her mom who is considering going into the field as well.

Her plan B would be to become a Forensic Anthropologist and study bones at crime scenes.

“I’ve just always been a sucker for that stuff,” Kim said.

She took forensics her junior year and loved it!

In her down time, Kim loves to go to the lake, be with family and friends, or go to the beach.

She recently enjoyed a cruise to the Cayman Islands where she swam with dolphins, went to Mexico and Jamaica.

Kim not only holds the title for Miss Relay for Life, but a purpose behind the scenes.

She participates in Relay for Life in honor of her grandfather Ray Hamilton and her grandmother who both passed away five-six years ago.

“They’ve just always been a big part of me doing it,” Kim said. “I just want to do it to honor the people who have lost their lives to cancer.”

The band includes his brother Larry “Ditt” Littlejohn on the bass, Wes Blair on the drums and Jason Scarbrough on guitar.

“I’ve just always loved music, probably started when I was 15, writing music and competing in a lot of song writing competitions and things like that,” Matt Littlejohn said.

As the opportunities grew, Littlejohn began incorporating some of his original songs into the band’s repertoire.

“I’ve always written original music,” he said.

Matt Littlejohn said his inspiration comes from his “personal relationship” with God, “and wanting to express that in a way through music and through lyrics.”

“There is just so much inspiration in the Bible, just as you read daily,” Matt Littlejohn said.

In 2011, the band released its first EP (small group of recorded songs).

The band has traveled and played throughout the Southeast, including Mississippi, Georgia, Tennessee, Florida and, of course, Alabama.

“Best thing about playing music with these guys is leading worship,” Blair said. “The other best part is there’s never a dull moment. Like forgetting your cymbals on a road trip.”

He said he became interested in music through church.

Matt Littlejohn Band started as the worship band at Lomax Assembly of God. Many of the band members still play at the church each Sunday.

As a youth, he convinced his pastor to allow him to take a spare drum set home, so he could practice.

Ditt Littlejohn, like Matt, said it was their grandparents that got him interested in music.

“I started playing guitar first, then I just started playing around with the bass, and I wound up liking it better than I do the guitar,” Ditt Littlejohn said.

He said leading worship is his favorite aspect of being a part of the group.

Matt Littlejohn said he enjoys meeting new people when they travel and being able to “connect with different people through worship and through music. It’s always a fun exciting thing.”

Where they go is largely based on invitation, but Mike Graham has also booked events for the band.

They have played at En Fuego and AtlantaFest, a large Christian music festival in Atlanta.

“That’s always exciting to be a part of,” Matt Littlejohn said.

Matt Littlejohn said playing such events allows the band to connect with other musicians and led to playing at churches that have requested them after seeing them at the festival.

“It’s fun, it’s different,” Matt Littlejohn said. “We all enjoy traveling and enjoy being in different places.”

While traveling has slowed down a little for the band recently, it typically has one out-of-town show a month or every two months.

Matt Littlejohn said traveling was easier when fewer of the band members had children.

In March 2017, Matt Littlejohn Band released a second group of songs as an EP available for download called “You are Strong.”

The band recorded the EP at Black Cat Studios in Griffin, Georgia. Jason Hoard produced the project.

This was the first time the band had an outside producer for a project.

“That was a fun experience because a lot of times, when you come in, you think a song is ready,” Matt Littlejohn said.

Ditt said the song is a great encouragement that “no matter what you are going through, He (God) is stronger than that.”

“To me the song really brings Psalms 46 to life,

where it says ‘God is our refuge and our strength a very present help in time of need,’” Blair said.

He said the song emphasizes that God is in control and can be trusted.

Autumn kicks-off a season of fun and reminiscing. From roaming patches to making memories in the kitchen, pumpkins create many opportunities for fun.

Jessica Patterson remembers working in her grandmother’s three-acre garden and kitchen as a child.

Patterson was probably 10 when she first made pumpkin muffins with her Mema, Thelma Cottingham.

Years later, Patterson found her grandmother’s pumpkin muffin recipe in a stack of old family papers.

“Of course, when you are cooking with your grandmother, it’s a pinch of this and a little bit of that, so I kind of had to tweak the recipe a bit,” Patterson said.

There was some trial and error involved in finding just the right measurement of each ingredient.

Patterson tweaked the recipe to make cupcakes by adding more spices (including nutmeg, ginger, ground cloves and cinnamon) and icing.

“If you are like me and like anything pumpkin spiced, these are the ones for you,” Patterson said.

While pumpkin pie spice can be substituted for the seasonings, Patterson said “it’s just not quite as good.”

DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix dry ingredients in bowl, whisk until blended. In mixing bowl, mix or beat Pumpkin mix ingredients fully, then add in dry ingredients and stir. Fill cupcake liners two-thirds of the way and bake for 20-25 minutes.

When finished baking, allow to cool before frosting.

Dry ingredients, except for the sugar, are whisked together, while the wet ingredients and the sugar are mixed together using an electric mixer.

For the oil, Patterson prefers to use olive oil, but she said other varieties will work also.

The cupcakes will rise some while baking, so each cupcake holder should only be filled two-thirds full of batter.

Cottingham used pumpkins fresh from her garden, but Patterson uses canned pumpkin now “just because it’s easier.”

Patterson uses a store-bought fluffy cream cheese icing.

“Nothing I make is going to have that consistency, so that’s what I use,” Patterson said.

Her son Draven likes it when she cuts the centers out and puts icing inside.

Creative designs add a seasonal flair to Patterson’s cupcake.

For the pumpkin cupcake, she breaks orange circus peanut candy in half and places it on. Then, she uses a toothpick to make the lines to resemble a pumpkin. A green strip of sour candy is then added for the stem.

Cupcakes became Patterson’s go-to dessert to make for school events when Draven was in preschool.

“He did not like to do anything super detailed, if it was crafty or coloring or anything along those lines, but he did get excited about cupcakes,” Patterson said.

Patterson said they planned and created new recipes together.

The duo also got creative with the decorations on the top, spanning from spider webs with candy spiders to white chocolate hearts.

“It’s something short and quick and he could see results,” Patterson said.
