A note from the editor Ten years ago, The Clanton Advertiser launched what would become a locally treasured magazine —Peach Living.

That first edition was published in the fall, so in this issue we celebrate this occasion reflecting on some of the favorite past stories and some momentous highlights of the past 10 years.

It is a bit ironic that the same year Joyanna Peach Living was established was the Love same year I was beginning my career in journalism in Tennessee.

Since becoming editor of this publication, I have enjoyed so many of the interviews and stories, ranging from my very first story about how local peach baskets are made to stories about goat’s milk soap and yoga to colorful peacock pets and a feature about a local veteran.

Although getting a full color magazine together during an era of social distancing has been a bit of a challenge, our great staff and help from local sources has made it possible.

Another person celebrating this year is Miss Chilton County Aubrie Hall, who saw a longtime dream fulfilled when she was chosen for the title. This year has looked a little different for her as well, but she is enjoying the events that have not been canceled.

Also in this edition, we have information about gardening both inside and out. Debbie Housner has enjoyed having house plants since she was a child, now those with plant trouble come to her. The Chilton County Extension Office has tips for gardeners on what they can do know to get ready for next year’s planting.

What did you enjoy about being the editor of Peach Living?

I was proud to launch Peach Living during my time as managing editor of The Clanton Advertiser. I think it allows for a special kind of storytelling that can be hard to do during the everyday task of putting together a daily newspaper. I’m even more proud to see the magazine has proven to have staying power and will turn 10 years old this year.

Did you have a favorite story? If so, what was it about?

We were still trying to figure out exactly what we wanted the magazine to be while I was at The Clanton Advertiser.

But I worked on an environmental series every issue that I especially enjoyed. I remember stories about efforts to save

What did you enjoy about being the editor of Peach Living?

I enjoyed working with our team then to give readers a more in-depth look into the lives and experiences of their fellow Chilton Countians. The magazine gave us space to share different types of features, from stories to recipes to event snapshots.

BACK My hope was always that the people we featured would enjoy having a place in the pages of Peach Living as much as we enjoyed highlighting them.

Did you have a favorite story? If so, what was it about?

I couldn’t pick just one favorite!

Among the first few stories I wrote for Peach Living was one about a photographer named Sarah Jackson.

Sarah had won an award for her photography in an international contest, which was impressive enough, but what I remember about her more when I reread her story is her warmth and compassion. She used her artistic gifts to help others, both personally and through nonprofit organizations, and she encouraged people to value their own gifts.

Another story I was privileged to tell was about a couple, Tommy and Rita Little, who survived an EF-2 tornado that destroyed their Maplesville home in January 2012. Many people can relate to their feelings of loss, but their spirit of resiliency is inspiring. I also remember sitting with E.L. “Buddy” Lawley in the shade of his fruit stand one hot August morning, talking to him about his many years as a peach grower in Chilton County. It was one of many interviews that reminded me we can learn much from listening to what the members of our older generation have to say.

Where are you working now?

I am a staff writer at the Shelby County Reporter.

What did you enjoy about being the editor of Peach Living?

I was on staff when the magazine began and later worked as editor. It was exciting to start a new product that I was sure Chilton County residents would enjoy. The magazine gave us the opportunity to tell interesting stories about Chilton County in a different way. With more space and time, we could get to know the people we featured and then share their stories with readers.

Did you have a favorite story? If so, what was it about?

My favorite story was about the unique tradition of hot hamburgers in Chilton County. I had heard of the dish before but learned about its deep ties to the area, different variations served at different eateries in the county — and even tried one for the first time. They’re delicious!

My favorite article that I have had the opportunity to write for Peach Living would have to be a tie between two articles — “Let the Music Play,” which was written about disc jockey, jazz guitarist and Big Band music / antique radio enthusiast Mike Schiermann, a.k.a. Scott Michaels, for the June 2014 edition; and “A Return

I enjoy writing for Peach Living because it affords me the opportunity to do what I love, which is to share people’s stories — about life, faith, music, humor and many other facets of the human experience.

It also allows me to participate in the community and get to know people I might otherwise not have had the opportunity to know.

The most impressionable article (“Phantom Banners: Flags with mysterious past return home” from the July 2012 edition by Drew Granthum) featured a Civil War flag that was captured during the Battle of Bakers Creek (known to some as the Battle of Champion’s Hill). It was on loan at the Confederate Park at the time. It was captured by Union forces and eventually ended up in Iowa. My great, great grandfather Collum from Jemison was taken prisoner of war during that battle.

Even though the Confederacy is a tumultuous topic, my ancestors were a part of it and I want to know their history and where they came from. I think knowing those things makes us better today.

I have a few portraits of my great, great grandfather but not much else. He died in 1902. So to see something from his life and time period is moving, even if I don’t agree with what it represents.

I enjoy writing for Peach Living because I love Chilton County and her people.

Interviewing residents allows me to meet others that live here that share the same passion for this area. The people give Chilton it’s flare and set it apart from other areas.

I have enjoyed Peach Living since the very first issue. I have two favorites simply because I was personally connected to the people.

The first was in January 2013 Vol 3, No. 1, and I was contacted by The Clanton Advertiser asking who on the lake would I recommend to be featured in the Peach Living Magazine. Without hesitation, I said Louie and Nancy Bentley. I chose them because of their charismatic personality and also because they had a beautiful home on the lake where everyone feels welcome. When I contacted them, they were more than willing to open their home for photographs and an interview. What I didn’t know at the time was Louie had a childhood connection

with Clanton and Lake Mitchell. His grandparents owned a cottage on Lake Mitchell and they owned and operated Upchurch Drug Company in downtown Clanton. Louie grew up in Tennessee but spent summers with family at his grandparent’s cottage. So my first favorite would have to be Lake Life featuring the Bentleys.

My second favorite is March 2015, Vol 5, No. 3 the article “Ministry of Laughter” featuring Crystal Russell.

I am the leader of our seniors at Liberty Church in Hoover and after reading the article I immediately contacted Crystal about “Claudean Louise” and asked would it be possible for her to attend and speak at our seniors luncheon sometime soon. She was delighted and we scheduled for May 2015. Our group was not disappointed. One thing she mentioned in her article was “Life can be hard or stressful, but laughter is good for us.” Scripture tells us a merry heart does good like a medicine and “old” people need all they can get.

We got a good dose when she came.

That was in 2015 and our group still remembers the performance and the laughter she brought to us.

When I read the article about Boozer Farms, it began a great relationship with them — the CSA group is always sharing recipes about how they use the fruits and vegetables in the boxes, and they have expanded their territory. Also, with the COVID-19 restrictions, they lost some of their regular market and are co-opting with other farms — it has been fascinating to watch the development and growth.

Since she was 4 years old, Aubrie Hall’s desire to be Miss Chilton County has grown more with each passing year because of the impact and affect that the program has on girls and young women. In March 2020, Aubrie, age 19, realized this dream when she was crowned Miss Chilton County.

Since then, she has used her platform to encourage others and to cheer them on while searching for their dreams.

Hall is grateful and honored to hold the title of Miss Chilton County.

“Being crowned Miss Chilton has encouraged me even more to follow my dreams,” Hall said. “Since I was four, I have always wanted to be Miss Chilton. It is a role I have always admired and looked up to. When I was crowned,

it boosted my confidence and is a message I want to share with everyone: Whatever your dream is — it is possible.

Don’t give up!”

Hall is articulate and a confident speaker. Talking to others comes naturally for her. This helps her use her platform to spread awareness on being yourself.

“Women, and people in general, struggle with stage fright,” Hall said. “It is okay to be who you are. Being yourself will help set you apart. I choose to be myself on stage. You can be yourself.”

Hall knows that serving as Miss Chilton County has allowed her to be a representative for the county and at times people look to her as a role model.

“When I go to events, young girls especially, come up to me to talk or to touch my crown,” said Hall. “I let them know they can achieve their dreams just like I did.”

Hall proudly represents Chilton County, an area that is close to her heart and that she loves for many reasons.

“It is a small, charming and friendly community that makes people feel welcome and like they are at home” said Hall. “Chilton is a great location. I love the festivals and gatherings that bring our community closer. And of course, I love that it is Peach Country!”

During her reign, she has enjoyed visiting and participating with her queen sisters in local events and activities including making blankets to donate to 14 peach living

Butterfly Bridge, visiting Todd’s Produce for ice cream and being a part of the Peach Parade.

“I loved seeing everyone at the Peach Parade,” said Hall.

“I loved getting dressed up and throwing necklaces at the children. Seeing them smile is the best part.”

While COVID-19 has dampened some events and plans in recent months, Hall is looking forward to the future and upcoming events such as meeting Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey, Clanton’s new mayor Bobby Cook, Christmas parades, the Christmas tree lighting and visiting Butterfly Bridge.

When Hall is not performing her duties as Miss Chilton County, she enjoys being outdoors.

“I love anything outdoors! I am usually at the lake, on a four-wheeler, hiking to waterfalls or at the pool,” said Hall.

She also loves playing with her dogs, Zeus and Molly.

Now that Hall has accomplished her dream of being Miss Chilton, her dreams for the future include becoming a neo-natal nurse. She is currently enrolled at Jefferson State Community College with plans on attending the nursing program.

Hall’s parents are Tod Hall and Stacy Holley of Clanton.

Her brother is Tod Hall, Jr. The Miss Chilton County pageant is organized by the Clanton Evening Lions Club, and it is one of the club’s largest fundraisers each year.

Gardening does not have to be just for outside.

Indoor plants can have aesthetic and health benefits.

For Debbie Housner, her enjoyment of indoor plants started when she was a child.

“I grew up with them,” she said. “It was always a love that was passed down to me by my mom. It always gave our house a warm welcoming feeling.”

When selecting plants, Housner focuses on texture and having a variety of colors. She displays the plants in groups of pots in planters.

“It makes it peaceful,” Housner said. “It can also add to your décor.”

Indoor plants also have the added benefit of removing carbon dioxide from the air and releasing oxygen. She said the plants like to be grouped together.

Many of the plants that do well as indoor plants like indirect light, which is typical for many of the plants’ natural environment.

“Most of the time your indoor plants they actually come from the rainforest, and you have to think about the rainforest and its big canopy … the humidity, the rainfall,” Housner said.

Because of the tall dense trees above them, these plants would often be shaded from direct sunlight.

Housner has several favorites including African violet, holiday cactus and purple passion.

African violets come in several varieties because of the hybrids that have been created, including colors peach living 19

ranging from purple to white.

“I love them because there are so many varieties,” Housner said.

Among her collection of indoor plants is one that stands out because of its size — a Norfolk pine tree. The tree is about 4 feet tall and 5 feet wide.

“I love them because they are so graceful,” Housner said.

This particular plant is also unique from the rest of the indoor plants because it does like direct sunlight.

“I used to have a Swedish Ivy that was just absolutely gorgeous,” Housner said.

Holiday cactus are so named because of the time of year that they usually flower.

“It blossoms at a time when everything is just dead,” Housner said. “You get that bright burst of color during Thanksgiving and Christmas … The flower is like an orchid … it draws your eye right to them and you go, ‘Wow.’” There are many varieties of the cactus available now due to cross pollination to create different colors.

When she first got her oldest holiday cactus seven years ago, its flowers were pink, but now some of the blossoms have turned to red.

“That critter has gotten probably three foot across,” Housner said.

The shape of the plants clad is what determines whether it is a Thanksgiving or Christmas cactus.

“They do not have leaves, they actually have segments that are called clads,” Housner said.

Caring for indoor plants includes some of the same concerns that gardeners have in a traditional garden. These include how much sun or shade the plant needs and ensuring the plants have the right amount of water.

When the heat is on in the winter time, it can cause indoor plants to dry out. To combat this, Housner puts her plants in rooms that stay about 65 degrees during the winter.

“They usually will tolerate heat,” Housner said. “A lot of times I will put them on a tray of gravel and add water to that tray, so that it holds a nice humidity.”

She periodically feels the plants to ensure they are moist.

Keeping the plants healthy can also increase the humidity in one’s house keeping the air from getting too dry.

Housner’s plants spend summer days on her screened in porch which gets indirect light during the day. Housner said she moves the plants outside when the overnight temperatures have reached at least 50.

Indirect light is important to prevent the plant’s from getting sunburn in prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. Housner said she knows this from experience.

“After you have the fall equinox, our nights start getting longer and a little cooler,” Housner said.

“I leave mine outside through October sometimes through Thanksgiving, and then I bring them in … and they will pop out with their little buds.”

It takes two to three weeks for the flowers to fully bloom.

Housner said fertilizing the plants in the summer months is important.

“Let nature do its course,” Housner said.

Artificial light can negatively impact the plants natural timeline for flowering.

“Once they start budding, you don’t want to move them because they will lose their buds,” Housner said.

Because of her plant knowledge, friends will call on Housner for help when they are having problems with their plants.

SAVING SEEDS

Preparing for next year’s harvest With summer gardens dwindling growers can take this opportunity to get started on next year’s vegetable and flower gardens.

Saving seeds from this year’s plants can help growers get a head start for next year and preserve those hard-to-find varieties.

Bethany O’Rear, an Alabama Cooperative Extension System home grounds, gardens and home pests regional agent, said the first step to properly saving seeds is knowing if the plants are hybrids.

“If the plants are hybrids, then saving the seed will be fruitless,” O’Rear said. “Seeds from hybrid varieties will not produce the same plant as the one from which they were collected.”

Open-Pollinated Varieties When choosing plants to save for seeds, O’Rear said open-pollinated varieties are the best choice. peach living 21

“Plants pollinated by insects, wind or other natural processes classify as open-pollinated,” she said.

“Generally speaking, these plants will render seeds that, when planted, will produce the same desirable traits as the parent plant.”

However, there is always the potential for crosspollination. This is when genetic material from one variety crosses with that of another closely related variety.

This can result in a variety of offspring and their traits are often extremely unpredictable.

“Cross-pollination can occur with plants pollinated by insects or wind,” O’Rear said. “Some examples are cucumbers, melons, corn and squash. To prevent cross-pollination, only grow one variety in a single growing season.”

Self-Pollinating Varieties If growers are looking for plants that make seed saving easier, self-pollinating plants are their best option because they rarely cross pollinate.

“Some examples of self-pollinating vegetable varieties are tomatoes, peppers, beans and peas,” she said. “Zinnias and sunflowers are just two of many annual flower varieties that are self-pollinating.”

Collecting Before collecting seeds, O’Rear said to let them fully mature.

“When it comes to vegetables, the fruit should ripen completely before harvest,” O’Rear said. “With flowers, collect seeds after the petals have dried and a seed pod has formed.”

Remember, growers should only collect seeds from strong, healthy plants. Plants that have any diseases or a weak growth habit generally produce low-quality seed.

After collection, the seeds should be cleaned. O’Rear said this process is different depending on the type of plant.

“For some seeds, growers must clean them by a wet process, such as those in tomatoes, cucumbers or melons,” she said. “Cleaning dry-processed seeds, such as beans, peas and annual flowers, require the separation of the seed from the husk, flower head or pod.”

For seeds that require a wet process, remove the seed from the fruit and wash in a large container. Viable seed will sink to the bottom, while non-productive seed will float to the top. Remove the floating seeds and pour the seeds and water through a strainer. Dry the seeds completely by spreading them in a thin layer on a flat surface. For dryprocessed seeds, use hand screens and winnow the seeds to separate them from additional plant debris.

Storing Storing seeds correctly is an important part of the process. After cleaning, place the seeds in a paper envelope.

To ensure the seeds stay dry, include a packet of silica gel (available at craft stores) or dry rice in the envelope.

“Always label any saved seeds,” O’Rear said. “While you may know the exact varieties that you are saving at the time, a year or two down the road that may not be the case.”

Store the envelope in a tightly closed glass jar and keep in a cool, dry place. For extended quality, store the seeds in the refrigerator. Most seeds remain viable for three to five years.

For many residents of Clanton, Billy Joe Driver was the only Mayor of Clanton that many of us had ever known. The tremendous sense of loss in his passing will be felt throughout the City of Clanton, Chilton County and by his many friends and acquaintances across the state of Alabama.

The devotion of Billy Joe Driver to the City of Clanton and its residents spans more than six decades.

He was highly respected and admired, not only as a nine-term mayor and member of the City Council, but as a human being. His life, public service and devotion to the city and its people will continue to serve as the model of dedicated public service for those that strive to follow in his footsteps.

The accomplishments of his 36 years as Mayor are evident throughout the City of Clanton. Every resident of Clanton and Chilton County takes pride in the Big Peach water tower that serves as a unique, notable and welcoming landmark for hundreds of thousands of travelers each week along Interstate 65. For those who call Clanton home, the Big Peach has served as a beacon for more than three decades to welcome the weary traveler home.

We can all be thankful for the efforts of Mayor Driver effort in helping to establish St. Vincent’s Chilton hospital at a time when the only emergency medical care facility in Chilton County closed and the nearest emergency room was more than thirty minutes away. It is impossible to place a value on the many lives that have been saved by this wonderful and important asset to our community.

During his tenure in office, Mayor Driver was a significant force in the recruitment and development of Jefferson State Community College and the Clanton Performing Arts Center, testaments of achievement in doing great things.

Perhaps his greatest legacy will be the Alabama Farm Center at Centennial Park, the most significant economic development project in the history of Clanton and Chilton County. This project and the associated retail development will improve the quality of life for the people of the City of Clanton, Chilton

County and Central Alabama for generations to come.

Billy Joe Driver will be remembered for much more than his efforts to build a city that serves the needs of its residents and provides a home for our families. His memory is built on a foundation stronger than bricks and mortar. His most precious gift to us is a life well lived in the service of those he loved; his family, his friends and the people of Chilton County.

In reflecting on his life, I am reminded of the Bible verse Matthew 23:11; “The greatest among you shall be your servant.” Billy Joe Driver devoted his life to being a servant to others, making him one of the greatest among us. No one who has ever lived in this wonderful community will ever be able to think of the City of Clanton without considering the influence, the sacrifice and the dedication of our Mayor; Billy Joe Driver, a man who gave so much of himself to the people of the City of Clanton and whose name will forever be etched in the history of this city.
