A note from the editor The holiday season is around the corner.

This Thanksgiving and Christmas provide the perfect opportunity to celebrate family and the good things in life, despite a tough year.

In this issue, we feature a local group with some unique Thanksgiving traditions that celebrates their Mexican heritage as well as traditions of their new home. We Joyanna were even able to get the details for a recipe Love or two that readers looking for something different this year may want to try.

Nostalgia is a common emotion at Christmas as many reminisce while holding ornaments they have had for years and remembering times with loved ones. The Central Alabama Performing Arts Guild organizers have been feeling a little nostalgic also as they have coordinated this year’s radio production of “A Christmas Carol.” There will be opportunities to sit with a cup of hot cocoa and listen to the production from the comfort of home. Details can be found in the story.

Fond memories of loved ones were on Chyanne Martin’s mind as she told me about inheriting her grandfather’s farm. She honors him in the name she chose for the land — B&M Ranch.

We also check in with the reigning Miss YMCA to see what this year has been like.

Whether 2020 was a year you want to end as soon as possible or you have fond memories of this year, we at Peach Living hope you will take time to relax and enjoy this final issue of our 10th Anniversary year. We look forward to bringing you fun and interesting stories for many years to come.

When Central Alabama Performing Arts Guild president Mary Schiermann realized there would be no stage productions this year due to COVID-19, she could have done nothing.

But what she and the group’s participants came up with was nothing short of a 4 peach living

Christmas miracle — a radio play and a drivein experience featuring the voices of actors from Chilton County and far beyond.

In short, CAPAGuild will broadcast a radio adaptation of Charles Dickens’s “A Christmas Carol” dubbed “A Radio Christmas Carol 2020” on Dec. 19 at noon on local WKLF

95.5 FM, 1000 AM and WKLFradio.com (or ThePeach.Live). A drive-in listening party will coincide with the program in the parking lot of Senior Connection in Clanton’s Park Plaza.

The program will also air on Jazz Hall Radio in Birmingham, WON The Apple in New York City and several other broadcast and Internet radio stations. After the show is broadcast, CAPAGuild will put it up on their official YouTube channel.

“We are really coming to terms with how to mix old ways, old technology and old approaches with new ways, new technology and new approaches, and finding that blend is becoming our new normal as performance artists,” said Mary Schiermann, who organized the program alongside her husband, Mike.

Case in point, auditions for the production were announced via Facebook — and people from areas across Alabama as well as Iowa, Georgia and Tennessee responded. Even one child actor auditioned from Africa over Zoom, but unfortunately when the time came to record his part, the Schiermanns could not get back in touch with him.

Voice parts were recorded by phone, and Mike said he was surprised by the good quality of the audio. Once all the lines are recorded, he will go into the editing process and begin assembling the entire show.

“Radio is one of the oldest ways to do storytelling,” Mike said. “Radio has been around for 100 years, and nobody ever really thought about the fact that we would have a pandemic

like this that you would need something like radio to put on (a show) safely.”

The age range of the performers is vast — from 7-year-old Abby Chastain of Clanton to 70-year-old Bill Meyer, also of Clanton. All in all, there are a total 39 speaking parts for the production involving performers from multiple states.

“That is a large number, but we have so many wonderful voices that tried out and auditioned,” said Mike. “We even made some script revisions and built in some new parts that were not originally there just so we could give these great performers a chance to be part of us.”

Even one grandparent and grandchild pair — Ernest Fike and his 9-year-old grandson, Forrest Fike — are participating together. Ernest plays The Ghost of Christmas Present, and Forrest plays Tiny Tim. Ernest Fike said “A Radio Christmas Carol 2020” is his first production, but he was attracted to the format because it requires less memorization than a stage play. He said he read for several parts and was chosen for the one that best suited his voice.

“I think it’s unique for the radio now,” Fike said.

“It used to be very common, and I’m glad the radio station is participating in it. I think that’s a good thing for them to do for folks for Christmas.”

Fike also loves the classic Dickens story, another reason he was interested in doing a role.

“I think if you haven’t heard it or read it or seen it, you haven’t had Christmas yet,” Fike said.

Radio plays are nothing new to the CAPAGuild.

This will be its sixth radio production, and in a way, they are coming full-circle. The very first play the group did was “A Christmas Carol” in 2014.

CAPAGuild is a nonprofit organization focused on the performing arts in Central Alabama, based in Clanton and radiating outward as far as they can go and still find people to participate in music, theatre, dance, puppetry, improv, standup comedy — every facet of the performing arts.

While COVID-19 put some of their plans on hold, Mary Schiermann had an exciting new opportunity to learn and share with the group. She was one of just five people in the world recently selected to work with a professional puppeteer mentor in Los Angeles, Robin Walsh. Walsh’s resume includes Sesame Street, the Emmys and a production of “The Magic Flute” with the Boston Symphony.

Schiermann gets to work with Walsh once per week in hour-long sessions conducted online. She will use her training to help shape CAPAGuild’s future endeavors.

Virtual CAPA Guild productions will be available on YouTube — providing more worldwide exposure and exponentially increasing the nonprofit’s potential.

Meanwhile, Mike invites everyone to listen on Dec. 19 at noon and, if possible, to drive out to Senior Connection and listen on their car radio.

There, prizes will be awarded for the best Christmas decorated vehicle and more.

The runtime of the program is approximately 30 minutes.

“A community can come together and enjoy the radio program, and nobody has to leave the safety of their pod or their group or their home,” Mike said. “You can stay close to the people that mean the most to you, and it can still be a meaningful holiday experience. Christmas is going to be a tough one for a lot of people. We just thought this was something that the community needed right about now—a common Christmas experience that everybody can share without putting anybody at risk.”

Past radio plays are listed on the CAPAGuild website capaguild.org, and anyone who misses the upcoming live airing can hear it on the site.

Although this year has been a bit different due to COVID-19, Karley Tillery has still enjoyed her responsibilities in serving as Miss YMCA of Chilton County.

“Since being named Miss YMCA, my life has been very exciting,” Tillery, a junior at Jemison High School said. “I have been very busy, but have enjoyed getting to make new friends and meet new people. I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

It was announced earlier this summer that YMCA Queens would still have the same

responsibilities as those who have won in previous years, despite the format for selection being changed. This includes attending parades, community service events, civic events and YMCA activities.

Queens were selected in the following categories: tiny (4-6 years), little (7-9 years), young (10-12 years), junior (13-15 years), miss (16-18 years) and collegiate.

Tillery said with changes to the pageant, it was a photogenic only pageant.

Miss YMCA Karley Tillery has enjoyed helping serve others in her community and meeting new people.

“The queens were nominated by headshots, and the winners were announced on Facebook Live,” Tillery said. “Another thing that affected me is that I was actually quarantined for our first event because I came in close contact with someone who had tested positive for COVID-19. There are also several events that have been changed or altered due to COVID-19.”

Tillery found out she had been named Miss YMCA for 2020 while she was at work and looked down at her cellphone to see that the Queens were being announced.

“As soon as I clicked on the video, they announced my name,” Tillery said. “I was so excited to be a part of the YMCA Queens. I have always wanted to be in a pageant, but I was always too nervous. When I saw the YMCA pageant was photogenic only, I decided to give it a chance.

I had headshots from my majorette photoshoot a few months prior, so I decided on the last day that I wanted to enter my picture in the pageant. I went and printed a picture and turned my application in at the last minute never thinking I would actually win.”

So far, the Queens have attended a ribbon cutting for H&M Boutique/Central Salon and Lash Bar, the Swedish Festival Parade and donated food and drinks to Butterfly Bridge. The Queens have plans to participate in several events coming up.

A major project for the YMCA Queens was Denim and Diamonds, a joint project with other local queens “to raise money to purchase Christmas gifts for those in need in our community,” Tillery said.

Tillery said the most enjoyable part of her reign so far has been helping serve others in her community and meeting new people.

She also appreciates the fact that the YMCA serves as an integral part in the community.

“One thing I appreciate about the YMCA is that they are always helping children in our community by having summer camps, after-school childcare and many other activities for kids and adults to participate in,” Tillery said.

A typical day in the life of Tillery consists of her going to school, participating in majorette practice until 5 p.m. and going home. Once home, Tillery said she is usually doing homework, eating dinner and also preparing for the next day.

Tillery works at The Boutique at Peach Park when she does not have majorette practice and on the weekends.

During her reign, Tillery hopes to be a positive influence and role model for the younger queens and teach them to do what is right.

Tillery lives in Jemison and is the daughter of Chad and Kerri Tillery.

She is involved with her youth group at her church, Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, and she also takes several classes at Jefferson State Community College.

In the future, Tillery would like to be a special education teacher after graduating college.

Thanksgiving is traditionally remembered by many as the day that European immigrants were saved by Natives with an introduction to native foods such as corn, which kept them from starving during the winter. For that reason, millions of Americans mark the occasion with baking a feast and filling the air with the aroma of pumpkin pie.

Last year, a record number of 55 million people traveled home to celebrate “Turkey Day” with their families. However, sometimes the distance is too great to travel and not feasible.

A seat around the fire is a great place to enjoy the fellowship.

Clanton resident Rev. German Gomez, originally from Cuitlahuac, Mexico, came to the United States as an immigrant in 1985 and became a citizen. Gomez, unfamiliar at the time with the traditions of Thanksgiving, quickly realized that it was a day to celebrate with family. Because Gomez and many of the congregants of his church did not have local family to celebrate Thanksgiving with, he decided to celebrate with his “church family.”

as one large family. Since then, the church family celebration has become tradition, making this year, the 18th year congregants have come together to share food, games and memories.

Even though this Thanksgiving family fiesta is marked with an abundance of food, it is not as traditional as one might think. Favorite Mexican foods replace signature Thanksgiving dishes.

Instead of turkey, there are ribs in Chile Ancho sauce. Instead of green bean casserole, there is rice and frijoles (beans). Gomez and his wife, Ana, built a special in-ground oven to roast meat. Days before Thanksgiving, Gomez and his family will purchase a goat or sheep from local farmers, clean it, rub it with a blend of traditional ancient Mexican spices and vinegar and wrap it in maguey leaves. The maguey plant has a long history with Mexico. It has a long thick aloe vera-like shape. The fiber of the plant was used by native Aztec people to make hammocks, paper and even has medicinal properties that helps treat wounds and is wrapped like a bandage over the skin. The inner sap of the plant is commonly known for its use in making tequila. The plant’s thick leaf helps hold moisture in while the meat is cooking.

Once the meat is wrapped and buried, a fire is built on top which allows the meat to be slowly cooked for hours until the meat is tender enough to fall off of the bone. All of the families that attend bring various dishes to share. Tamales (sweet and savory), sopes and posole soup are a few favorites.

A warm spiced punch is served with stalks of sugar cane, and families gather around fires for warmth.

Make-shift fires and gas grills are brought and set up across the yard to help keep the food, punch and tortillas warm.

“To celebrate Thanksgiving, you really need to be around family,” said Rev. Gomez. “One of the common things families do here on Thanksgiving is play games, so we play games too!”

Each year, congregational members have a sack race, kick-ball tournament and piñatas. Men, women and children all compete and the back yard becomes a field day. A week before Thanksgiving, various congregational members begin making humansized piñatas to take to the gathering. Families San Juan Methodist enjoys the day together as one large family.

discuss what type of character or image they should make their piñata, look for a cardboard box in that size and cut and tape the box until it is the correct shape. Afterward, tissue paper may be taped and glued onto the box to give it decoration. Once the box is filled with candy, children of all ages take turns beating the piñata box with a stick.

As parts of the piñata are beaten off, children pick up parts that will make a nice container to hold their candy, which many times are a cone or leg. Once the piñata breaks apart, dozens of children stampede inward to fill their cone with as much candy as they can grab.

“My favorite thing about spending Thanksgiving at the pastor’s house are the games we play, and us spending time with each other like a big family,” said Mia Olivos, age 13.

“My favorite thing is the delicious food and the games,” said Carlos Olivos Jr., age 11. “I love the Spaghetti Verde (a spaghetti dish served in a green Poblano cream sauce). I eat two plates of it!”

Men and women sit in various locations throughout the yard and “catch-up” on the latest events and happenings.

This year, Rev. German plans to add a hay-ride to the list of activities.

“We love that on this day it is a day for families to come together,” said Rev. Gomez. “It is a special time that we gather. We are grateful to the Lord and to this nation. It is a tradition that unites us all.”

Rev. and Ana Gomez open their doors and invite everyone to come and be a part of their family Thanksgiving. The event begins at 1 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day and usually ends about 8 p.m. or until dark.

“It is going to be fun,” he said. “There will be things to do, and plenty to eat, but without the turkey.”

This warm holiday drink has is made with fruit.The cinnamon and apples are reminiscent of warm apple pie with tropical elements of pineapple and guava. Guaranteed to comfort and impress your family or guests.

INGRIDIENTS: 10 tejocotes fruit (optional) 10 guavas 1 stalk of sugar cane (pictured) 1 pineapple (complete with skin, cut into chunks) 3 apples (with skin, quartered) 2 Piloncillos (dried cones of brown sugar and sugar cane; see picture) ¼ cup cinnamon powder 2 gallons of water 1 cup of sugar * Other fruits may also be added.

Apricots, plums, raisins, pears, and dried fruits are commonly used according to preference. * The first three ingredients may be purchased together in a bag at Hispanic grocery stores.

DIRECTIONS: First prepare your sugar cane by cutting the stalks into quarters. Then place all of the ingredients inside a pot except for the apples and sugar. Bring the water to a boil.

Meanwhile, cut the apples into quarters. After 30 minutes of boiling, add the apples. Cook the punch for 1-2 hours until the water is a dark cider color.

Add sugar to taste. Serve hot with stalks of sugar cane.

The opportunity to live “the country life” drew Richard Beasley to Chilton County to establish a small farm in Clanton with a garden and some pigs in 2003.

Now, his granddaughter Chyanne Martin continues what he started on the land but with a focus on horses.

“When he started getting sick, I started to take over,” Martin said. “I was 13 or 14 when I started taking a little more responsibility taking care of the animals.”

Taking on the farm was a lot of work, but Martin said, “I can definitely see where it helped me mature, being able to take care of something … to have the ability at that age to say I take care of a ranch.”

Even before that, Martin had helped Beasley on the farm.

“I would help my grandfather make slop for the pigs,” Martin said.

Back then, a nearby bread store would sell Beasley bread that could no longer be sold to customers. “(The store) had a deal with my grandfather that they would sell it to him at a cheap price, and that is what we would use to make slop for the pigs,” Martin said.

Martin inherited the property six years ago when her grandfather died.

“It meant a lot” to Martin to be able to continue his work.

“The ranch never had a name before we just called it the farm, then whenever my grandfather had passed away, we wanted to name it something that kind of honored him as well that is how we came up with B&M, which stands for Beasley and Martin,” Martin said. “It meant a lot to be able to have that.”

Beasley had moved to Chilton County after some other members of the family.

“Most of my family is from Florida, so whenever my parents moved here my other family decided … that they wanted to follow, they wanted to live the country life as well,” Martin said.

As the farm developed, the garden grew to include many items that Beasley wanted to have on hand, such as okra, corn and tomatoes.

Horses were added when Martin took an interest in riding. Horses have now become the main focus for B&M Ranch.

It was Kimberly Martin, Chyanne’s mom, who first introduced her to horses.

“I was about 3 or 4 when I first got into horses,” Chyanne Martin said.

By age 6, she was starting to get more serious about riding, enjoying trail rides and riding around the farm.

She joined the Alabama Junior Rodeo Association around the age of 10.

“I remember being little I always wanted to go to the rodeo, but I could never pronounce it,” Martin said.

It was exciting for her to be able to be a part of the events that she had always enjoyed watching.

She still competes in barrel racing about once a month as a part of the National Barrel Horse Association. Even after riding horses for about 16 years, Martin is struck by the fact that she is controlling “a thousand-pound animal that has a mind of its own.”

B&M Ranch has served as a horse rescue site.

Martin said two of the horses that she has were rescues, but she had been more involved with rescuing in the past.

Now that Martin has a job and is returning to college, she has scaled back what she does.

“Right now, I only have five horses and one donkey,” Martin said.

Martin will be attending the University of Montevallo in January. She will be working toward completing her bachelor’s degree in special education.

In the past, the ranch has also been open for events for those interested in riding.

Long-term plans for Chyanne at B&M Ranch include additional horses. She wants to purchase some project horses that have been “green – broken” but not fully trained.

But first, Chyanne plans to finish her degree and become established in her career.

The cooler days of November are perfect for putting your lawn and garden chores to bed for the winter. Completing them now will ensure a more successful garden in the coming months.

Planting Planting fruit and nut trees, shrubs, and vines in the fall gives them a chance to establish a good root system before the warmer days of spring. Roses and hardy annuals such as larkspur, poppies, pansies, ornamental cabbage and kale can be planted now.

Bulbs can be planted for spring flowers and now is the time to conduct a soil test to determine if limestone is needed for the lawn so it can be applied.

A cold frame can be set up for tender coolseason vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, Swiss chard, lettuce, mustard, onions, radishes and turnips.

Mulching Adding a layer of mulch around trees, shrubs, and planted beds offers several advantages.

Mulch conserves soil moisture. Evaporation of water is greatly reduced when the soil is protected from the direct rays of the sun and moving air. Mulch prevents rain from compacting the soil surface as well as decreasing soil erosion.

Another important advantage of a mulch is the control of weeds. It is especially important

to mulch rather than cultivate around shallowrooted plants, such as rhododendrons, azaleas, and camellias.

Controlling soil temperature is another plus with mulch. Lower and more uniform soil temperatures in summer favor root growth and beneficial bacterial activity in the soil. In winter, mulch insulates the root zone and protects roots from frost penetration and buffers against freeze-thaw cycles.

Mulching material, such as pine bark or pine needles, improves the appearance of the garden.

It is valuable for covering beds near the house or in areas where neatness is important. Mulch can replace grass or groundcovers in areas that are difficult to mow or maintain. Mulching around trees and shrubs can prevent damage to plants from mowers and trimmers.

Mulching has a few disadvantages. First, the cost of some materials can be a drawback to large-scale mulching. Some mulches are also not readily available. If large quantities are required, buying bulk loads of mulch is less expensive than buying mulch by the bag.

Sawdust and wood chip mulch have a high carbon content and can remove nitrogen from the soil. This is easily corrected by using additional nitrogen fertilizer.

Heavy mulching over a period of years results in a mat of mulch and soil covering the crown area of the plants. Plant roots can also develop in excessive mulch layers. Rake old mulch to break apart matted layers before applying a new mulch layer.

Avoid piling excessive mulch at the trunk of trees.

This volcano mulching causes rot by holding moisture against the trunk.

There are numerous materials that can be used for mulching including pine bark, pine needles, compost, shredded tree leaves, newspaper and cardboard as well as weed fabric, stone and gravel.

Chinese Privet Control Chinese privet control often seems insurmountable.

However, control with herbicides is effective and best done in the fall of the year particularly November through January. Other manual removal methods can be effective too if diligent follow up occurs. Call the Extension Office for more information.

Lawn Burweed Control Last summer, call volume at the Extension office was up with people trying to rid their yards of lawn burweed. Remember when the kids or grandkids couldn’t run around barefoot because of them? With cooler weather, you may think you have finished with them but if not controlled, they will be back in force next spring. November is one of the best months to treat your lawn for these pesky weeds. The spiny burs are not noticeable until spring and then it is too late to get rid of them easily. Call the Extension Office for control methods. Do it now or they will be back.

Maintain Equipment Increase the life of equipment and avoid rust by cleaning engines, sharpening and oiling tools, storing garden hoses, nozzles, and covering or insulating outside hose bibs. Extend the life of your investment with a few minutes of work.
