The wait is finally over! Peach Living is pleased to announce Chilton County’s favorites in our Best of the Best contest for 2019.

As the votes are tallied, I get excited to see who the community nominated.

This year features several local businesses returning for another year as a winner or finalist. I will not tell you who. You will have to read the list for

yourself.

Along with the favorites picked through Best of the Best, Chilton County residents also enjoy history and celebrating bygone eras. WKLF in Clanton, Chilton County’s original radio station, recently celebrated 70 years of being on the air.

Highlights of its history and plans for the future can be found in our story “Making radio waves.”

Pageants are a favorite pastime of many local girls, and in this edition, we highlight Miss Swedish Festival Celeste Montgomery.

We also share the story of the Central Alabama Horse Club and how members enjoy helping prepare younger riders for competition.

Every time Chilton County residents tune their radios to 95.5 FM or 1000 AM, they are tuning in to a part of history.

Not only can residents listen to the nation’s longest continuously-running daily Gospel radio program — but they can also join a community of listeners going back 70-plus years.

WKLF first became a radio station on Feb. 10, 1948 — that’s when the official FCC license was issued that brought the station into existence. On the anniversary of that date in 2019, the new owners of WKLF marked the completion of 70 years of broadcasting with a community celebration.

The event was a chance for both listeners and some of WKLF’s own to relive some of the memories that have taken place during that time.

“Many folks started their morning awakening to the Bald-Headed Milkman and the morning temperature from the back porch,” recalled Chris Johnson, new coowner of the station alongside Robert King.

The nickname belonged to former station co-owner and radio personality the late Billy Lawrence, who hosted the program “Singing the Gospel” alongside his wife, the late Willodean, “The Little Woman” starting in the early ’60s. Willodean continued hosting the program long after her husband’s death up until her passing in 2017. Station manager Layle Samford is the current host.

During the interview for this story, Johnson asked if the original thermometer used to read the morning temperature for Lawrence’s program was still there.

“It broke unfortunately,” Samford said.

There are many other similar stories that have been shared over the years, both humorous and touching.

Samford shared a moment when Buck Littleton and Lawrence were emceeing a high school singing: “Billy put a wig on his head and walked behind Buck, and everybody started laughing. It was the only time in his life that Buck was speechless. He grabbed it (the wig) and threw it backstage.”

Al Headley, a broadcaster at the station from 1971 to 1990, remembers when Chilton County Schools Superintendent Frank Daniel would get up on early winter mornings and ride the local roadways to see whether they

were passable for school traffic. He would stop by the radio station at about 4:30 a.m. to relay his findings to the community.

“This was back before social media, and people depended on their radio station in situations like what we just had,” said Headley, referring to cold weather in January. “I felt like the community was very close to the radio station during our time out there. That was all part of that closeness.”

Headley, who took part in broadcasting local parades and pageants (he is still known as the voice of the Chilton County Peach Pageant), remembers the days when even the commercials were done live on the air.

“Those were the days when you did it all,” he said.

Former WKLF DJ David Robinson is one of many people who started their career at the station. He was still a high school student when he began working there part-time in 1964.

“Radio at that time was a lot of fun,” he said. “Radio people were well thought of in the community.

You were kind of a celebrity in the community in the ’60s.”

An air of nostalgia can be found at the station with a mix of old and new technology.

While at WKLF, Robinson gained lots of the experience he would need to further his career in radio. He ended up working at multiple stations and even returned in the ’70s. He would eventually own three stations.

“To me that was the heyday of radio,” Robinson said. “It was more community oriented. Most people counted on their radio station for everything — weather, news, whatever was going on.”

Roger Mims, also a WKLF DJ in the ’70s and ’80s, shares Headley and Robinson’s nostalgia for the times.

“I miss the days of live DJs on the radio,” Mims said.

The idea for the station’s creation is credited to John Kelley Robinson, who in 1947 had planned for the call letters to be “WJKW” thought to be partly taken from his initials. He applied for 760 kHz with 500 watts, but on Oct. 14, 1947, the permit was issued for 980 kHz and 1,000 watts, increasing the station’s power and resulting in the call letters being changed to WKLF. It operated like that from late 1947 with program testing and was licensed on Feb. 10 the following year as Southeastern Broadcasting Company.

is now the Chilton County Arts Council building. In the early ’50s, the station moved to the transmitter site location to Highway 22 west of Clanton, where it remains to this day.

Among the first broadcasters at WKLF were the late Marion W. Easterling, also known as a prolific Gospel songwriter. He has been listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for hosting “America’s Favorites,” which became the nation’s longest continuously-running daily Gospel radio program. “America’s Favorites” can still be heard today, weekdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturdays from 11 to noon and Sundays from 7-8 a.m. The program features a mix of old and new Southern Gospel music.

Other early broadcasters included the Rev. Hymon Atcheson, father of well-known concert pianist Randall Atcheson; Curtis Harris, Elmer Harris, Jimmy Harris, Bill Hays, Littleton and Lawrence. The original station engineer was Lester Carter. Also, Helen Parrish and Mary Culp were secretaries who were well-known in the community.

In 1961, Robinson sold the station and SBC to James H. “Jack” Dennis, Lawrence and John O’Neal. At a later date, Dennis and O’Neal bought out Lawrence’s part of the station.

In 2004, SBC sold the station to Great South Wireless, and in 2018, Great South Wireless sold it to WKLF, LLC, the current owners.

In 2017, the frequency changed from 980 to 1000, which opened the door for a potential increase in power, Johnson said.

As for the station’s call letters, they will remain unchanged.

But unfortunately, no one knows if the letters stand for anything or if they were randomly issued by the FCC. “It’s been that way for so long we just think it’s part of the community,” said King.

BACKYARD COMPOSTING Extension System offers tips STORY BY KERRY SMITH, EXTENSION COMMUNICATIONS

In Alabama, a family of four generates an average of 2.5 tons of garbage per year — nearly a half ton of which is yard refuse and kitchen waste that can be composted. According to the EPA, Americans recycle and compost about 33 percent of their total daily trash generated.

However, roughly 75 percent of all municipal

waste is material that could be recycled.

The magnitude of solid waste production is presenting disposal problems in sanitary landfills.

Many landfills have been forced to close as a result of being full or environmentally unsound.

You can have an impact on decreasing the volume of trash in our landfills and add a peach living 11

benefit to your yard at the same time. Recycle leaves and other yard waste and most kitchen scraps to make your own compost. It gives benefit to both sandy and clay soils.

Why buy this amendment when you can make it yourself?

The key to composting in the home landscape is to regulate the conditions under which microbial decomposition takes place for greater efficiency.

Keep in mind that smart yard composting is merely speeding up a natural process. On the forest floor, it could take several years for humus (or compost) to form, but with attention to detail, we can shorten this to mere weeks.

The Compost Environment

For efficient and rapid composting, the microorganisms that do the work need to have the right balance of air, water, carbon, nitrogen, and temperature.

A compost pile without a bin of any kind, a composting cage made of concrete reinforcing wire or a 3-bin composting unit built of wood can be used to get started.

Air

Composting is an aerobic process, which means it occurs in the presence of oxygen. The compost pile gets oxygen two ways: by the turning of compost and by building the pile so surface air can diffuse into the center. When a pile gets too little oxygen, it will become anaerobic, and offensive odors can result.

Water

Microorganisms need water to survive and function.

Ideally, the moisture content of the compost pile should be between 40 and 60 percent. The compost should be moist when squeezed but not dripping wet. If too wet, the decomposition process will slow down. A handful of compost should feel like a wrung-out sponge. Squeeze it and no more than a drop or two should come out.

Carbon and Nitrogen

The microorganisms that do the composting need food. They get energy from materials high in carbon (carbohydrates such as cellulose, lignin, and complex sugars in plant residues). They also need protein, which they manufacture from materials high in nitrogen (manures, kitchen scraps, green leaves and fertilizer nitrogen).

The ratio of carbon (C) to nitrogen (N) is important. If there is too little N, the microbial population will not grow to an optimum size, and decomposition will slow down. On the other hand, while too much N compared to C allows rapid microbial growth and speeds up decomposition, it can result in depleted oxygen and odors as the excess N is given off as ammonia gas. The optimum C:N ratio is about 30:1.

If materials added to the pile have a high C:N ratio, then some N should be added to more closely approximate an optimum C:N ratio. For example, if sawdust is placed in the pile, then some N fertilizer, grass 12 peach living

clippings or manure should be added at the same time.

Knowing that the carbon in dead leaves is much more available than carbon in large wood chips, it’s important to increase surface area. Small chips give the microorganisms more surface area on which to feed. A leaf shredder or chipper prepares all compost materials for a more efficient compost process.

Temperature

As the microorganisms grow and multiply, they generate heat from metabolism. Heat is beneficial in that it destroys many kinds of weed seed and disease organisms; however, when temperatures rise above 140°F, the beneficial microorganisms start to die. Turning the pile when temperatures reach this point will prevent overheating and will speed up the entire process. The 130°F to 150°F temperatures generated in the core of a compost pile are adequate to kill most weed seeds and many pathogenic organisms.

Managing the Composting Process Any number of systems may be used to contain and manage compost. But any compost system that you choose should be determined by how well you will be able to manage the compost process. Whether using a cage, a pile or a turning unit, the following sequence should be followed to properly build and manage the compost.

Construct a compost pile in layers. Alternate different types of yard waste with a nitrogen source and a sprinkling of soil or finished compost. The soil and finished compost provide an inoculum of microorganisms. Begin with a 6-inch layer of coarse materials such as small twigs or branches (this adds air). Then place finer materials such as leaves or grass

kitchen scraps, including apples, cabbage, carrots, celery, coffee grounds, egg shells, grapefruit, lettuce, onions, oranges, pears, pineapple, potatoes, pumpkins, squash, tomatoes, turnips — just about any vegetable waste. fats, butter, bones, cheese, chicken, fish, lard, mayonnaise, meat, milk, peanut butter, salad dressing, sour cream, vegetable oil, yogurt, etc.

clippings in a layer about 6 to 8 inches deep. If wood chips or other higher-carbon materials are placed in this layer instead of leaves or grass clippings, add about 1 cup of a nitrogen fertilizer or a manure. The final layer consists of soil or finished compost 1 to 2 inches deep.

This sequence of layers is repeated with the exception that the coarser material is omitted with subsequent layers. Just about any plant waste can be added to the compost pile. Kitchen scraps, such as vegetable and fruit scraps, egg shells and coffee grounds, can be added to the pile, but make sure they are buried in the pile to avoid odor. Do not add meat scraps, bones or fats to the compost pile because they will attract unwanted animal and insect pests.

Turn to mix the compost periodically, ideally after the temperature in the middle of the pile has reached 140°F, to encourage uniform aeration of the pile. Add water if the pile dries out. Compost can be ready to use in as soon as a month or as long as a year, depending on the kinds of materials added and how the compost pile is managed.

Finished compost should look like a uniform potting soil with little distinguishable evidence remaining of what materials were originally added to the pile.

Using Finished Compost

Compost can be used to improve soil aeration and structure, add nutrients to garden soil and hold water and nutrients in sandy soils. Compost can also be used as a mulch to conserve soil moisture, suppress weeds, prevent crusting of the soil surface and buffer soil temperatures.

Since 1971, Chilton County has been home to a place for horseback riders young and old to come and enjoy their sport.

The Central Alabama Horse Club was formed by a “core group of local horse lovers,” Tina Thomas, club secretary, said as a place to come together for shows, competitions and trail rides.

Current Club President Jerry Thompson was a founding member.

“Tina’s father and I used to ride together, and he got talking about it (forming a horse club),” Thompsons said.

Others in the community joined the discussions and became a part of the founding leadership.

Thompson’s favorite event to participate in as a part of the club has been rodeo. In his competition days, Thompson participated in western pleasure.

The current leadership of the club have been involved for several years. Thomas and Tana Petty, club treasurer, said they became members as children.

“This club is kind of like family,” Thomas said.

Growing up in the club, Thomas and Petty became close friends. Thomas competed in western pleasure and barrel racing.

“My daughter shows western pleasure now,” Thomas said.

Petty was riding by herself at 4 years old.

When she started competing, she chose English pleasure as her starting category.

Later, she started barrel racing.

Western and English pleasures are different styles of showing a horse at events.

Both women said the excitement of the sport drew them to barrel racing.

“It was fast, thrilling,” Thomas said.

However, it is her knowledge of western pleasure that Thomas is passing on to the younger riders in the club.

For Petty, as a young person, riding kept her focused on being responsible and helped her avoid getting into trouble.

“Waiting for her name to be called” to start her event was Petty’s favorite part of the shows.

Petty said she also enjoys dressing up for the Fun Day shows that the club hosts.

Thompson started riding horses when he was 14 after working at a camp in Florida that had horses.

“Several of our club members have received honors in associations that we are members of,” Thomas said. “One of our original club members, Lamar Robinson was honored by being inducted into the Professional Cowboys Association Hall of Fame in 1995 during the finals rodeo. We also have Lamar Robinson, Charles Mims, Betty Robinson and Jerry Thompson that were inducted into Alabama Open Horsemans Association Hall of Fame during the Alabama Open Horsemans Association Championship Horse Show throughout the years.”

Although he no longer competes, Thompson is still involved training younger riders. His granddaughter competes in barrel racing.

“Our Vice President Ronnie Drinkard helps train some girls in western pleasure,” Thomas said.

Three generations of riders make up the 60 or so members of the club.

“We have all ages,” Thomas said. “Out here, we really like to support our youth. We have a pretty good sized youth group right now.”

Each child with an interest in learning is first taught to ride a horse well. Thompson said it takes hours of practice. As they master riding at slower speed, they are taught how to ride at faster speeds.

Thompson said just how long the process takes depends on the rider.

“Each rider is different,” Thomas said. “They learn at different paces. Some kids may start thinking they want

to do western pleasure and decide that they want to run barrels.”

During the spring and summer, the club meets once a month, in addition to any events or shows that they are hosting.

“It is a good place for people to come who are wanting to start,” Thomas said. “You have people that are willing to get out there and work with you and help you gain the knowledge that you need ... Our Open Horse Shows offer classes for the beginner all the way up to professional trainers. We have a variety of classes such as: halter, gaited, pony, English, western and timed events. There is something for everyone. We encourage people in our community to come out and bring their horses and show with us.”

The timed events include barrel racing, arena race, pole bending and stake race.

During the stake race, riders maneuver their horses in a figure eight around two stakes.

Fun Day shows are a more relaxed atmosphere than a competition. On these days, the participation rules are a little different.

“We bend the rules a bit because I’m 50 years old, and I ride a pony,” Petty said.

Participants often enjoy dressing up in costumes as their favorite characters on these days. Horses are also often decorated.

Petty said these are social events.

“People don’t have to have the high-dollar show horse to be in a fun show,” Thomas said.

She said it is open to anyone to bring out their horse.

It is also a good way to get introduced to the club.

Club members start attending horse shows in March and continue through August.

There are also a few shows in the fall.

The Club hosts six shows each year as well as an additional two shows as a part of their association.

“Our club is a member of Mid-State Horsemans Association, and we host contestants from all over central Alabama,”

Thomas said. “These contestants compete at a local level to qualify for the Alabama Open Horsemans Association State Championship Horse Show that is held in Montgomery, Alabama, on Labor Day Weekend. We have many contestants from Chilton County that show horses with us.”

A lot of work goes into getting the arena ready and buying the needed supplies as well as securing judges for the events. The judges are usually from other areas.

The club will be hosting shows on the following days this year: April 6, May 11, June 1, July 20, and Aug. 3. Each is open to the community to come watch. Shows begin at 9 a.m. with judged categories. Timed categories usually start around 1 p.m.

Trail rides have also been a major part of the club’s history. The rides have been used as fundraisers for organizations including St. Jude’s Hospital, The Human Society of Chilton County, DHR Foster Care, Rescue Squad and others.

Membership is $50 per person or $75 per family.

Central Alabama Horse Club is located at 1010 County Road 453 in Clanton.

Celeste Montgomery of Verbena has grown up competing in pageants both inside and outside Chilton County. Through the crowns that embrace her brow she stretches to embrace those she encounters in the community.

It is the main point of the crown, she said.

Montgomery is Miss Swedish Festival 2018, and she says her crown is for the Chilton County community.

“Making a difference in our community is really important to me because you always want kids — and even teens and adults — to know that we’re not just girls who get dressed up and get to put a crown and sash on,” Montgomery said. “We do have big hearts, and we really want to help our community in any way that we can.”

Applying at the maximum age for a contestant in the 2018 Miss Swedish Fest pageant, the then-19-year-old Montgomery was pleasantly surprised to be granted participation in the competition.

She aimed to win a title that would serve her community while building her character and supplying scholarship funds for her nursing studies at Jefferson State Community College Shelby-Hoover Campus.

Yet serving as this year’s Miss Swedish Fest has accomplished more than that.

Besides personally inspiring others from her antidomestic-violence platform, Montgomery said impacting the Chilton County community alongside “county queens” primarily consists of community service projects.

So far, these have included a Pancakes and Pajamas benefit at a local eatery, several parade appearances, Trickor-Treat the Streets, an angel tree at Thorsby City Hall and more.

Montgomery said these events are efforts “to help our community and make sure they feel that we love them.”

Although community service projects have been a main focus of her 2018-2019 reign, being a role model to other girls — especially little girls — has been Montgomery’s heart.

“Right when you put a crown on your head and a sash on your body, and you walk out into the community, you don’t

realize how many people actually do look up to you,” she said.

“Even when you don’t have the crown on your head, people are still looking up to you — but especially when you are going out as the title holder.”

Montgomery recalled some little girls’ comments when the queens were featured on a local television show: “One day we’re going to be onstage just like you, and we’re going to be able to get a crown and sash.”

“I just think that’s so important because a lot of people don’t have the confidence you do until you start pageants

or whatever your hobby may be,” she said, speaking from experience.

Montgomery described herself as a shy young girl when she first began competing in local pageants. It was the pageants, particularly ones with interview portions, that taught her the confidence she has today.

“You have to come out of your shell; you have to talk to them if you really want the title you’re going for,” she said. “That’s really important to me, to be able to show people that it’s a little intimidating at first, but it’s really a good experience.”

Greatly due to the relationships she cultivates with fellow participants, pageant interviews have become Montgomery’s favorite portion of the competition.

“I’m definitely getting to meet people in the interview portion. It’s a really big part of why I enjoy it,” she said.

“When you live in the county, especially Chilton County, it’s so small, so you already know most of the people (fellow contestants),” she explained. “But, really getting to interact with girls, especially other pageant girls — it’s a really cool experience because you may think you know someone, but you really get to know them when you spend a whole day to compete with them.”

Montgomery said getting to know her “queen sisters” has been one of her greatest joys as Miss Swedish Festival 2018.

“It’s been so fun!” she said. “I knew that I would be close to my queen sisters, but it’s been really a good experience getting to understand and know who they are, just personality-wise.

Because each one of my queen sisters has such as big and beautiful personality, and they’re all so different also. That’s really important to me: to get to be a role model to not only my sisters but other people in the community.”

Montgomery said she strives to remain genuinely herself in order to set an example for the individuals she encounters.

It is the responsibility of bearing the Miss Swedish Fest title, and the role she hopes most to model.

“That’s really important to me,” she said, “to make sure that I keep certain aspects of myself and my personality true, to show other people that they can be who they are.”

The Miss Swedish Fest Pageant is held each October in Thorsby as part of the annual Swedish Festival celebrating the town’s heritage.

Upcoming Events March Luncheon Secretary of State John Merrill will be the features speaker at the meeting on March 12 at the Jemison City Hall Complex at noon.

Merrill is the son of Mary Merrill and the late Judge Horace Merrill of Heflin, Alabama in Cleburne County. Merrill has had an extensive career in economic development: working for the Tuscaloosa County Industrial Development Board where he assisted in the recruitment of MercedesBenz, director of business development for the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama, director of community relations and community education for the Tuscaloosa County Board of Education and served as business development officer for 1st Federal Bank in Tuscaloosa.

In 2010, he was elected to represent the people of District 62 in the State House of Representatives with 87 percent of the vote, which was the highest percentage garnered by a candidate in

any contested House race that year. He served as the secretary/treasurer of the House Republican Caucus and was a member of the powerful Rules Committee, Economic Development and Tourism, and Constitution, Campaigns, and Elections Committees.

On Nov. 4, 2014, he was elected as Alabama's Secretary of State with 65 percent of the vote, winning in 53 of Alabama's 67 counties. He was inaugurated as Alabama's 53rd Secretary of State on January 19, 2015. Merrill has been awarded numerous recognitions throughout his career on a state and national level. He has traveled internationally and represented our great state and nation in Canada, China, Germany, Russia and Taiwan.

Merrill has been married to the former Cindy Benford for 33 years and they have two grown children.

Jeremy Arthur, Chamber of Commerce Association of Alabama president and CEO, will be the featured speaker at the April 16 meeting at Clanton First United Methodist Church at noon.

CCAA is a 120 plus member organization representing chambers of commerce throughout Alabama. Through this office, Arthur serves as the chief administrative executive ultimately responsible for the total operations of the association. He is responsible for directing the efforts of a joint agreement known as The Partnership with the Business Council of Alabama. The Partnership represents the interest of some one million working

Alabamians through its member companies and local chambers of commerce.

Prior to joining the Chamber of Commerce Association of Alabama, he served at the president of the Prattville Area Chamber of Commerce.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science.

His graduate studies include a Master of Public Administration from Auburn University, with a Minor in Economic Development. He is currently a Doctoral Candidate at Auburn University in Public Administration and Public Policy.

He is originally from Decatur, and now calls Prattville, Alabama home.

Chamber attends EXPO

The Chilton County Chamber of Commerce staff and ambassadors attended the Alabama Advantage Expo last month in Orange Beach, Alabama. The expo under the direction of ADECA, the Alabama Department of Economic and

Community Affairs, is held annually at the Caribe Resort to showcase Alabama to the “Snow Birds,” as they are often referred, or primarily retirees that make their home for several months on Alabama’s Gulf Coast.

Below you will get a glimpse at how we went about welcoming those retirees to Chilton County: Welcome to Chilton County!

Chilton County is known for its world famous ‘Chilton County Peaches’ and is often referred to as the peach capital of Alabama.

Centrally located along I-65, it is home to award winning schools, the state of the art Chilton St. Vincent’s Hospital, as well as Jefferson State Community College Chilton campus.

COMMUNITY HAPPENINGS Every Monday Clanton First United Methodist Church, at 207 Eighth Street North in Clanton, hosts Celebrate Recovery, a Christ-centered 12 step program to address any hurt, habit or hangup. Meetings are every Monday evening at 5:45 p.m. beginning with a free dinner and followed by a large-group meeting at 6:30 p.m. Men’s and women’s small groups meet at 7:30 p.m.
