A note from the editor In this edition, we take some time to stop and honor those who have served in the U.S. military to preserve the freedoms we hold so dear.

In “Salute a hero, ” Aubry Wallace shares his story. Those who protect this country by serving in the military make many sacrifices, as do their families, Joyanna by going whenever they are needed Love and moving when necessary. As we near July 4, let us celebrate those who have preserved our independence.

Also in this issue, Willow 31 shares with us hot summer trends in Chilton County. Some of these styles are revamped versions of one many may remember.

Summer can also be a great time to enjoy nature or start a new hobby. Local photographer John Morgan shared his experience taking photos of moths.

We also sat down with Miss Chilton County Allison Giles to hear about her reign thus far and how competing in pageants has helped her in other areas of life.

Aubry Lee Wallace was six years old when he knew he wanted to join the U.S. military.

The year was 1941, and World War II was underway.

“On Dec. 7, the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor,” Wallace said. “From that time on, I hated all enemies of the United States, and I wanted to fight them.”

Looking back on that time, he said the attack “was so shocking to people. People don’t realize how it was.”

He said Birmingham had blackout drills in preparation for if there was ever an attack.

“Everybody was scared to death,” Wallace said. “There was no way the Japanese could get that far inland to come to Alabama, but people were still afraid of it.”

His eagerness to serve was met with some challenge as he tried to enter the military when he was underage — twice.

At 15, Wallace joined the National Guard.

“In June of that year, 1950, is when the Korean War started,” Wallace said. “When the war started, the Guard knew they had a bunch of kids in there.”

He received an honorable discharge because he was too young to serve.

The following year, Wallace tried joining the Army.

“I went and lied about my age again, and I joined the Army,” Wallace said. “I went through boot camp ... Then my daddy got me out again. He didn’t want me going to Korea.”

Wallace had taken a train to boot camp in California.

Having been born in Stanton in 1935, he enjoyed getting to see other parts of the country.

Finally at the age of 17, Wallace begged his father to sign permission for him to join.

“I told my dad, ‘I want you to sign for me to go into the service. I want to join the Air Force,’” Wallace said. “He didn’t really want to. I said ‘If you don’t do it, Dad. I’m going to leave home. I’m going to get in some way.’”

Eventually, Wallace convinced his father to sign the necessary papers for him to serve in the Air Force.

Wallace was accepted as a supply major.

“The Korean War was still going on when I joined the Air Force,” Wallace said.

He completed his training in Texas.

“My first duty assignment was to Maxwell Air Force Base down in Montgomery,” Wallace said.

It was during this assignment that he met his wife, Shirley.

“We were both kids,” Aubry said. “I was only 17 years old. She was 15 years old when we got married.”

“In just a few months, I was 16,” Shirley said.

The couple has now been married for 65 years and will celebrate their anniversary in July.

“We proved everybody wrong that said it wouldn’t last,” Aubry said.

Two weeks after his wedding, Wallace was reassigned to Alaska. Since Aubry did not have a high enough rank for Shirley to go with him, she stayed behind.

Aubry was on a ship headed to Alaska when he received news that the Korean War had ended.

After 18 months in Alaska, Aubry was stationed in Texas. This time Shirley was able to join him.

In 1958, Aubry was sent to Hawaii. Shirley was unable to go because she was pregnant with their third child at the time and was not cleared to travel until the child was six weeks old.

He was stationed in Hawaii for three years.

“When I was in Hawaii was when they first came out with computers, and we had to transfer all of our records ... our computer was as big as this house,” Aubry said. “You walked into it, you had to walk into the computer, and you had to put on a white jacket go through two sets of doors and be blown off, no dust could go in there.”

Next, he was stationed in Louisiana. This is where he was during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

“Everyone thought we were going to go to war,” Aubry said.

While war with Cuba did not happen, the United States became more involved in Vietnam.

“We had been over there for a long time supporting the French, when the French was over there supporting the Communists,” Aubry said.

In 1963, he was accepted for flight status as an aircraft load master on the C-130.

An aircraft load master is responsible for everything in the plane behind the cockpit.

“My primary job was to make sure that aircraft was in balance,” Aubry said. “People don’t understand this about aircraft. An aircraft has a center of gravity and everything 8 peach living

in that aircraft has to be balanced to that center of gravity to the plane or they won’t fly.”

The plane was also used to drop paratroopers.

He was a part of a unit sent to Tachikawa in Japan, which served as a staging point for flights into south Vietnam.

“One of the things, I really remember about flying out of Tachikawa is the air base was right in the middle of the city,” Aubry said.

He also worked on an airplane that was used as an ambulance.

Once bases were established in Vietnam, Aubry and his team began flying to those air strips. During this part of his career, he would land on each of them that had been established.

“There wasn’t a month from November of 1965 til I retired in 1972 that I wasn’t in Vietnam at some time or another,” Aubry said.

Shirley said this made for a bit of a “lonely life” for her.

“I had my kids, but he was gone all the time,” she said.

However, she said she did enjoy the opportunities to see and experience new places each time the family moved.

In 1966, Aubry cross trained on the C-131 and was stationed in California. He was on missions along the Vietnam-Cambodian border to resupply bases by dropping supplies with parachutes.

“We resupplied 20 bases along that border,” he said. “We had a 90% recovery rate, and that’s a pretty good recovery rate when you drop your cargo from an airplane.”

It was because of this mission that he received the Distinguished Flying Cross.

While there, he became the chief of training. Andrews Air Force Base invited some of those from the California base to a training at LAX airport to train for serving on Air Force One.

He said he was never called on to serve on Air Force One, but he was prepared anyway.

In 1968, he was asked to be a part of Bob Hope’s Christmas tour.

“We went all over southeast Asia, starting at Midway Island,” Aubry said.

In 1969, he requested to be stationed in Charleston, South Carolina.

“I knew I only had 18 months left and I wanted to get closer to home (Alabama) for my retirement,” Aubry said. “... The last two missions I had with the Air Force I went around the world.”

He retired at the age of 36 as a Master Sergeant E-7 and moved his family back to Chilton County.

During his military service, Aubry Wallace was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with Five Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Good Conduct Medal (one for every 25 combat support missions), National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Medal, Air Force Presidential Unit Citation, Combat Readiness Ribbon, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon and Master Aircrew Wings.

When he was stationed in California, Aubry pastored a church in addition to serving with the Air Force to fill in after the pastor had left. In 1978, he attended seminary in Louisiana.

In 2005, Aubry Wallace was invited to come and pray for the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives.

Although he never became a pilot in the Air Force, he did earn his pilot’s license years later at the Chilton County Airport, under the direction of Billy Singleton.

He took his first solo flight on May 11, 2001.

Aubry and Shirley had three sons, Mickel, Kurt and Timothy and one daughter Windy Kay (Wallace) Barr.

All three of the Wallace sons went on to serve in the military. The oldest, Mickel, joined the Navy when he grew up and died in service to his country. peach living 9

As the sun goes down, John Morgan turns on his outside lights and watches the white sheets hung on the side of his house waiting for moths to land.

Morgan has photographed 585 different species, some of which had never been documented previously in Alabama.

His fascination with insects began at an early age.

“I have been infatuated with all things bugs all of my life,” Morgan said.

He said it is a “God-given fascination.”

Although he had also been interested in photography from the age of 15, Morgan’s two hobbies did not come together into one until about eight years ago.

Morgan said his interest in photography grew out of looking at Ansley Adams books.

“He was a pioneer in black and white,” Morgan said.

Morgan said Adams mostly took large scale, landscape photos in the western United States.

His first camera was 110 mm film, then he got a 35 mm. His equipment has grown with his interest.

It was a trip with the Birmingham Audubon, which Morgan said “is another one of my passions,” that began his interest in photographing moths. Someone new had joined the group and was more interested in photographing butterflies than the birds.

The man was Vitaly Charny, co-author of the book “Butterflies of Alabama,” working on photographs for his next book. Morgan asked Charny if he ever took pictures of moths.

Because moths are mostly nocturnal and extremely small, Morgan said they are far less popular than butterflies.

“More than half of the moths, we have in Alabama are smaller than a centimeter,” Morgan said.

Photographing something so small takes specialized equipment and a bit of trial and error to find the best angle.

Morgan uses a lens specifically designed for taking close up photos of extremely small objects.

“You have to really practice with this,” Morgan said of the lens.

He said the lens is designed for photographing subjects that are a centimeter or smaller.

He uses a diffuser he modified on the camera’s flash to keep the details of the insect in focus. Morgan also added a headlamp attachment (not specifically designed for cameras but modified by himself ) to have a light source closer to the subject.

He said each photographer has to learn how to best take the photos they want with the specific equipment that they have.

On the rear exterior wall of his house, Morgan has set up a backlight specifically designed to attract insects with a more traditional outdoor light to attract as many moths as possible. The lights are on either side of a white sheet.

“Without the white sheet, I’d miss them,” Morgan said. “They’d be too small.”

Morgan said he thinks the mercury vapor security light on the opposite side of house is what initially gets the creatures in his yard.

The setup brings most of Morgan’s moth finds to him, although he said he has gone hunting for specific species in order to photograph them.

Morgan said when he first started photographing moths this way, he tried to get the best shot he could before it flew away, not really paying attention to what other bugs may be around it.

“Now, I’m a little more picky with my peach living 11

shots, and I just want to get the moth,” Morgan said.

He will often use a twig to move other insects out of the shot.

The opportunity to learn is what keeps Morgan looking for moths.

“The thing I enjoy the most — I like learning new things,” Morgan said. “I like learning about things that have been here longer than we have. In a lot of ways, ... the moths that are new to me, especially the ones I find that are new to the state, I look at them as little jewels waiting on me to find them, like I’m dredging a river.”

So far, Morgan has documented 60 or 70 moths new to Alabama. Right now, Morgan is hoping to be the first person to photograph the caterpillar stage of a moth first seen in Alabama in 2012.

“They do know that it is only found on mimosa trees,” Morgan said.

There are some of these on Morgan’s property, so he is hopeful.

He said moths do more than people know and more pollination than they are given credit for.

Once, he saw an io moth and a one-eyed sphinx in the same night. “(It was) an unbelievable beautiful sphinx,” Morgan said. “A sphinx is a family of moth that have a very particular shape ... the one-eyed sphinx is very colorful purple and gold and its underwings are read and blue.”

He said the sphinx moths sometimes hit the sheets so hard that he thinks they are bumblebees.

One of his favorite moths is the pondside crambid, which is about two centimeters in length.

Morgan photographed this type of moth for only the second time in late May. Morgan is a member of a few different moth and insect enthusiast groups where members upload photos of specimens that they are trying to identify. He said these groups give him a chance to talk to people who know more about moths than he does.

He likes the collaborative atmosphere of discussing photos and determining what species it may be.

One site, iNaturalist uses a pattern recognition system to determine an identification.

“It’s not always correct,” Morgan said.

The most common ways to identify a moth is the overall shape, which usually at least narrows it down to the family. Color, under wings and special markings can help to narrow it further.

Size is often an important factor in determining the species. Morgan uses a ruler to measure the moth when possible. When he

does not have a ruler handy, Morgan uses the thread count on the sheet and a mathematical equation to measure the size of a moth.

Guidebooks are helpful in determining which of the 20,000 or more species of moth found in Alabama a particular moth is.

Soil testing is one of the most economical ways to ensure that your plot will produce,” — NORM HALEY Many hunters and outdoor enthusiasts plant food plots to help manage deer habitats. Today, more and more deer hunters implement warm and cool season food plots for a variety of purposes. When planting food plots, soil tests are crucial to a plot’s success. Extension professionals discuss the importance and the benefits of soil testing.

SOIL TESTING IS IMPORTANT

Norm Haley, an Alabama Extension regional agent covering forestry, wildlife and natural resource management, said that soil testing is the first step in having a successful food plot.

“Soil testing is the first step because it helps determine what the site needs to produce the most palatable and attractive forages,” Haley said. “Acidic soils that lack nutrients will be poor producers. A soil test tells the farmer/ hunter what lime and fertilizers are required to turn a poor site into a producer.”

Jordan Graves, also a regional agent specializing in forestry, wildlife and natural resource management, said plants grow best with particular soil conditions.

“Different species of plants require different soil conditions,” Graves said.

“Biomass increases when soil pH and nutrient levels are sufficient, based on the particular species.”

Some commonly used plants in food plots are alfalfa, chicory and clovers. Growers also use some small grain mixtures such as corn, soybean and corn mixtures, oats, winter rye, ryegrass, soybeans, cowpeas and wheat.

WHAT DO TESTS SHOW?

Graves said that soil tests look at three things: nutrient levels, pH and soil composition.

“Nutrient levels show the amount of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium that

are in the soil,” Graves said. “pH levels show how acetic soils are and growers adjust these levels by applying lime to a field. Soil composition references to clay, sand or loam soils.”

Haley said that soil tests determine which levels need to be adjusted in a field.

“From the tests results, the lab provides recommendations that the site requires for each particular crop a person intends to plant,” Haley said. “These recommendations are provided in tons of

lime per acre and in pounds of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium per acre.”

HEALTHY FOOD PLOTS

Haley said that a healthier food plots are more nutritious and sought out by wildlife.

“Healthy or properly limed and fertilized plots will be the most productive and attractive to deer and other wildlife,” Haley said. “If you are testing and following the recommendations and your neighbor isn’t, your plots will draw more attention from deer and other wildlife.”

SOIL TESTS CUT COSTS

Graves said that a soil test will tell you how much fertilizer to use and what nutrients are most needed.

Without this, a person is blindly guessing what the soil needs, which adds to their overall costs.

“If you do not amend your soils correctly, you could be wasting money on the seed you put in the ground, fuel used to plant the plots, time and effort you put in,” Graves said. “You may waste money putting out incorrect amounts of fertilizer or putting out lime when the soil doesn’t need it.”

Soil testing is one of the most economical ways to ensure that your plot will produce,” Haley adds. “A properly limed field allows plants to use minerals and nutrients that would otherwise not be available for uptake in lower pH or acidic soils. In other words, if you’re fertilizing a low pH field, you may be wasting money.”

Summer is a time of sporting one’s style while enjoying the long days of sunshine.

In Alabama, these trends often also focus on staying comfortable in the excessive heat typical of July and August.

Patterns are in this summer with shorts and shirts in everything from stripes to snake skin styles finding their way on to local shelves.

“Stripes are huge,” Kelsie Barrett of Willow 31 said. “Linen is huge.”

She said the snake skin patterns are popular because “it’s just so vibrant and fun.”

Ruffles and smock (also known as scrunched) tops are also popular.

“Some of the hottest trends this summer will be rompers, two piece sets, like a top and a bottom that go together,” Barrett said.

Jumpsuits, one-piece pants suits, are also very popular this year.

“It’s something cute to throw on, and it’s different than a dress,” Barrett said.

Some of the styles gaining momentum are ones Shelley Morris of Willow 31 has seen before.

“Jumpsuits and rompers were big in my time,” Morris said.

She said she has wondered why styles from the ’70s and ’80s, such as smock tops and high-waist denim shorts, have surged in popularity again.

“I think designers go back and look and they go, ‘I like that,’ and they bring it back,” Morris said.

A cropped top with high-waist shorts is a popular look this season.

For footwear, strappy sandals are popular again for summer 2019.

The Willow team said style trends are being driven by ads on social media.

“The stuff we like and see is because we see it on social media first,” Barrett said.

The mother and daughter duo has enjoyed being in business together. peach living 19

“We get to spend more time together,” Barrett said.

“We can count on each other,” Morris said. “... There is 100% trust. You can count on each other and depend on each other no matter what.”

Willow 31 takes it names from Highway 31.

“We got to restore an old building that’s been here for years,” Barrett said.

Morris and Barrett said the location and large display windows was what drew them to the location.

“It was fun restoring an old downtown building,” Barrett said.

A counter and two dressing rooms were added as was space for displays. Barrett said she likes the wood look that they chose for the remodel.

Opening a boutique was something Barrett had always wanted to do.

“I’ve always loved shopping,” Barrett said.

“This is really fun getting to bring in new brands and stuff that’s going to be hot items

for the girls ... and bringing it local was what I really wanted to do.”

The interior restoration was extensive, but the building still holds many memories for customers.

The building has housed Western Auto and Bar-D, and some remember coming to the location during those times.

When Willow 31 first opened in October 2018, customers recognized Morris as the former owner of Cake Addiction. In 2019, customers began asking if she would be 20 peach living

making her chocolate covered strawberries for Valentine’s Day. What Morris thought would be a one-time thing has become an ongoing opportunity for customers to order cupcakes for pickup at the store and cakes for special events.

Morris said the opportunity is available about twice a month, usually around holidays.

“Strawberry cupcakes are the number one,” Morris said.

Peach and wedding cake-flavored cupcakes are also popular in the summer time.

The wedding cake cupcakes are decorated with all white frosting and a flower on top.

“It tastes the same as a wedding cake,” Morris said.

For July, strawberries and blueberries take center stage for the patriotic look of red, white and blue.

Morris uses her Cake Addiction Facebook page to let potential customers know which flavors are available.

Morris bakes the cupcakes for sale in her ServSafe certified kitchen at home and brings them to the store.

An arrangement permitted under Alabama’s Cottage Law. French macaron cookies are also a popular sweet treat.

Upcoming events for the boutique include a backto-school bash, including a sale and free beverages.

Allison Giles of Maplesville was no stranger to the local pageant scene when she signed up for Miss Chilton County in 2019.

She had competed in the Junior Miss competition for the past two years, taking first alternate both time.

As one of the youngest contestants in the Miss category, her win this year came as a surprise.

“It was crazy,” Giles said, commenting that there were two girls who had been doing this awhile that she especially thought had a chance at winning.

“Being the first time competing in Miss is kind of scary, too,” Giles said.

The moment her name was called as the 2019 Miss Chilton County left her speechless.

Giles said she gained experience and friendships competing in many of the other county-wide pageants when she was younger but never won a title.

However, she did win some titles in the Maplesville High School pageant. She won the National Teen Miss United States Agriculture title in 2018.

In preparation for the Miss Chilton County competition, Giles practiced in front of a mirror for her onstage introduction and her fiveminute interview.

The interview is conducted before the pageant in front of a panel of three judges.

“I definitely love having a queen sister; that’s definitely my favorite,” Giles said. “One of my favorite parts of Miss Chilton is getting to know them.

She said she has also enjoyed volunteering in the community as a part of her reign.

The Evening Lions Club, which holds the Miss Chilton County pageant, awarded Giles $2,000 in college scholarship funds for winning the title.

“I am going to use that for Jeff State,” Giles said. “I want to be a pediatric nurse when I grow up. That’s always been my dream. I love kids.”

She said participating in pageants helped her develop her interview skills that will help her achieve this goal.

“Pageants have helped me so much because most people just think of a pageant as walking on stage and getting hair and makeup done all

that kind of stuff, but it’s so much more,” Giles said. “Interview has always been my weakest part and the more I do a pageant the better I get at the interview.”

She said the pageant coordinator Debbie King has also helped her in her years in the pageant.

This past school year, when she was in 10th grade, Giles applied to the health science program at LeCroy Career Technical Center.

An interview was required.

“Through pageants, it just helped me to open up and have confidence” during the interview and to make her dream come true, Giles said.

Giles said 90 students were called in for interviews, and 40 students were selected to participate.

Giles was one of them.

She said this is one of the largest groups they have accepted into the two-year program.

Graduates of the program are certified as nurse assistants.

After high school, Giles plans to attend two years at Jefferson State Community and then attend UAB or the University of South Alabama.

Parade and volunteer projects. Along with her queen sisters, Giles has donated supplies to Butterfly Bridge and helped clean the bathhouses at Raleigh’s Place.

She said she had not known about these nonprofits prior to these events.

During Maplesville Heritage Day, the girls coordinated mini-train rides for children to raise funds for Relay for Life.

“It was cool to bring my home(town) to the Miss Chilton County rather than staying just in Clanton,” Giles said.

Giles hopes to be a part of events in other towns and cities of the county during her reign.

The queens also participated in Relay for Life.

During a visit to see the Capitol, Sen. Cam Ward gave them a tour and introduced them to Gov. Kay Ivey.

“I had never been to the Capitol before,” Giles said. “We got to meet the governor, so that’s pretty cool.”

Giles said she is also looking forward to helping the Evening Lions Club establish more scholarship opportunities for contestants through raising funds and helping to establish partnerships.

Giles participated in her first pageant, the Peach Pageant, at the age of 12.

She did not place. However, the kindess shown to her by a fellow contestant, Zoey Collum, made her want to continue participating.

“She just showed kindness to me and showed me the fun of doing pageants,” Giles said. “... having that friendship made me want to keep doing pageants.”

Giles said she has met about half of her friends through pageants.

With each pageant, Giles said she gained confidence to keep going after a title.

Giles said she enjoys being able to show other girls her age that they can win.

Students participate in Scholars program The Chilton County Chamber of Commerce selected two rising high school seniors, Kallen Harris and Krista Davis, to participate in this year’s Economic and Community Development Scholars program on the campus of Huntingdon College, June 25-27.

Huntingdon College partnered once again with the Chamber of Commerce Association of Alabama, the Economic Development Association of Alabama and the Alabama Department of Commerce to host the third annual Economic and Community Development Scholars Program. The program is designed to introduce outstanding future leaders of Alabama communities to the importance of economic and community development and to open their eyes to consider this as a future career opportunity.
