A note from the editor As a new year starts, many focus on new beginnings.

Sometimes these beginnings can come from things that have seemed to be dead in our lives, such as renewing an interest in a hobby one has left on the shelf for a while.

In the hands of local woodworker Joyanna Gerald Smitherman, peach trees that Love no longer produce fruit the way they used to have new purpose as wood for doorstops, decorative bowls and pens.

Smitherman let us visit his workshop to see the process for his pens step-by-step.

For the Wright/Cleckler family, new beginnings after tragedy have come in creating a memorial garden and focusing on finding joy. The family shares about Clint Cleckler’s struggle with cancer and their efforts to honor his memory.

The start of a new year can also be a time to set goals and choose new adventures for the coming year. If farming is one of those adventures, the Alabama Cooperative Extension System has resources to help. One of those resources is outlined in this publication.

Also in this edition, we check in with the reigning Miss YMCA Chloe Killingsworth about her time so far and get a peek at Charlotte Johnson’s doll collection.

Peach trees are a mainstay of the Chilton County landscape, but even a healthy tree has to be pruned and eventually cut down to make room for new trees to keep peach production high.

Chilton County resident Gerald Smitherman saw potential in the larger peach branches and stumps that were being discarded from his son’s orchard as a new source of wood for small projects.

“I got to looking at all of the wasted wood that was thrown away every year,” Smitherman said. “I said, ‘I think I could do something with that.’”

Pruning and cutting down of exhausted trees keeps peach farmers busy in the winter months.

“The trees only live about 12-15 years,” Smitherman said.

Some of the peach wood that Smitherman salvages is used to create pens.

Each project starts by cutting the stumps with a chain or band saw to get pieces that are the right size. After a rectangular piece of wood is cut to the correct size, Smitherman drills a hole through the center lengthwise.

Next, a lathe is used to shape the wood to a comfortable size for a pen.

Hardware purchased for the pen determines how wide Smitherman needs to shave the wood to. “The bushings on either side of the pen blank are the correct size, and you purchase the bushings to go with the hardware,� Smitherman said.

Each pen is then sanded until its smooth. The actual pen components, such as the ink and the tip, are

purchased as a kit. The exterior clip and tip come in a variety of colors.

Cross refills can be used in any of the pens to change the color of the ink or for when it runs out.

Each peach wood pen still carries the faint scent of peaches even after it is finished.

“I started doing pens about seven or eight years ago,” Smitherman said. “It was just an extension of my other wood working, just something different that I wanted to do. It uses a lot of scraps left over from bigger projects.”

Pens are finished off with a sealant to keep everything smooth.

“It’s kind of a unique item for Chilton County,” Smitherman said.

Smitherman also makes small decorative dishes and door stops from peach wood.

He said peach trees are in the same family as cherry trees and have “similar characteristics of cherry, except being smaller trees and faster growing.”

He said peach wood “tends to shrink and crack a lot, so it is difficult to get large pieces” of the wood.

Smitherman has given away many of his pens as gifts, but the pens are also for sale at Rustique Relics in Clanton.

“You can make a pen with anything that you can drill and turn on a lathe,” Smitherman said.

For Smitherman, this has included plastic and deer antler.

The deer antlers come from a friend of his who is a taxidermist.

He said he uses a band saw to rough cut it usable pieces before putting it on the lathe to shape.

“The only problem is it does stink,” Smitherman said.

The blanks for the plastic pens come from a supply store in Pelham and offer a variety of color options.

Wood working has been a part of Smitherman’s life for many years.

“I grew up in a family of woodworkers and carpenters,” Smitherman said.

Smitherman has lived the majority of his life in Chilton County.

He taught agriculture and shop for 30 years and developed his home shop during that time. He first built his current shop in 2002 and has been adding on ever since.

“I kind of enjoy the smaller things,” Smitherman said.

“It is kind of fun to be able to finish a project in a short amount of time.”

Bowls, rolling pins and cutting boards are just a few of the other wood projects that Smitherman enjoys.

Treasured heirlooms hold enormous sentimental value to those who become the recipients as they serve as a visual reminder of fond memories of the giver.

Charlotte Johnson of Clanton is creating such treasures for her family as she passes down her extensive doll collection a little at a time.

“I have enjoyed them for a long time, so I hope they enjoy them half as much as I have,” Johnson said.

Her collection has been growing for 40 years and at one time included about 500 dolls.

“I had always loved dolls and enjoyed buying them for my daughters, but I just didn’t think about collecting them for myself until my grandchildren came along, and I started giving them storybook dolls,” Johnson said.

The dolls portrayed different characters from classic fairy tales.

“They were excited,” Johnson said. “As far as I know, they still have them.”

Later, grandchildren started giving her similar dolls as gifts.

“I just started from there,” Johnson said.

Her collection began with Effanbee dolls patterned after people from around the world. She also began collecting the Effanbee storybook dolls. Johnson said after these dolls, she began collecting the celebrity dolls, such as Marilyn Monroe, Elvis, John Wayne, etc.

As Johnson saw different dolls she liked, her collection grew. She is especially fond of the realistic looking Annette Himstedt collection.

Many of these dolls Johnson found at Helen’s Antiques in Prattville.

“She had beautiful dolls and furniture and everything in her shop,” Johnson said.

These dolls are from the Ashton Drake collection.

Annette Himstedt is one of Charlotte Johnson’s favorite doll designers. The doll on the tricycle is a part of this collection.

It was in this store that Johnson saw her first Annette Himstedt doll.

Johnson’s collection also includes dolls that had been popular among children and serious collectors alike, such as Barbie and Cabbage Patch Dolls.

“I was not going to collect Barbies because I had so many other dolls, and I started on the Holiday Barbie,” Johnson said.

She started collecting them when the third one came out. Her Barbie collection now includes Gone with the Wind dolls, Marilyn Monroe dolls, My Fair Lady dolls and several Dolls of the World.

“My daughter-in-law loved Cabbage Patch Kids,” Johnson said. “I think she started me (collecting those) and gave me my first one.”

Over the years, Johnson’s children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren had begun asking for specific dolls that they have their eye on.

In 2016, Johnson decided she was ready to begin parting with her collection and passing it on to the next generations.

“They get to pick one for their birthday and for Christmas,” Johnson said.

Among these have been her Precious Moments collection and the first 3-foot Barbie to be released.

Her great-grandchildren are now enjoying the “My Size Barbie.”

Her collection also includes dolls from Madame Alexander, Danbury Mint, Lee Middleton, Robin Woods, Hildegard Gunzel, Virginia Turner, Promenade Collection, Phyllis Parker, Rotraut Schrott, Yolanda Belles and Pamela Erff.

While she has never been a part of an organized club of doll collectors, Johnson said she has met several fellow collectors at doll shows. Johnson said she purchased some of her Madame Alexander dolls at a show in Prattville.

Johnsons said even as she was building her collection she tried not to pay too much for any one doll.

Showing the collection to others is what Johnson has enjoyed the most.

When one steps into the home of Janice and Jerry Wright, there is an intoxicating feeling of warmth and belonging. They immediately feel like old family friends.

It might seem a strange thing to be filled with such joy and peace considering the circumstances, yet the reason for their joy in the midst of deep sorrow quickly unfolds as they share their story.

Their grandson Clint Cleckler was adventurous, outgoing and always allowed his love for the Lord to be the driving force in his life. He was wise beyond his years and had a love for people that seemed immeasurable.

One could find him sitting with the student who dined alone, befriending the friendless and boldly declaring the love of Christ to others. He had a special place in his heart for 14 peach living

missions and once gave up playing high school football in order to attend a mission trip to serve others.

After graduating from The University of Alabama, he began his career as an oncology nurse. “After his transfer from Auburn to UAB, he completed a rotation in the oncology clinic and knew that’s where he wanted to work,” shared Clint’s mother Beverly Cleckler.

“Most people don’t want to work in that field right out of college, but he knew that was his calling. He began working with leukemia patients.”

Clint enjoyed his work but still made time to feed his adventurous side. During a hike on Blood Mountain in Georgia, Clint found himself falling behind his friends.

“He had a very rapid heart rate and was struggling to catch his breath during the hike,” said Beverly.

“When he returned home, he developed a cough.

He went to the doctor, and although his blood counts were off, they suggested he might have a mycoplasma infection or might possibly be dealing with too much stress.”

As the symptoms progressed, Clint made a visit one Friday to the hematology doctor on the floor he worked on at UAB for further blood work. Within 45 minutes, the doctor called and delivered the news that Clint had leukemia.

“He started chemotherapy immediately, but he didn’t go into remission,” Beverly said. “He was in need of a bone marrow transplant, so they tested his sister, but 16 peach living

she wasn’t a match. He was placed on the bone marrow registry in March of 2012 and a donor was found that July.”

On July 19, 2012, Clint Clecker received a bone marrow transplant but would go on to face overwhelming complications which he would battle for the next three years.

“Clint developed graft versus host disease as a result of his transplant. Although his match was good, it wasn’t perfect, and the donor cells started attacking his body,” said Beverly. “The disease attacked his skin causing it to harden. He lost all of his mobility and flexibility. His skin was like concrete and started peeling off.”

As he faced this battle, Clint became an advocate for the bone marrow registry.

He spoke at colleges, Relay for Life and to the doctors and medical students at UAB encouraging people to get on the donor list.

He also continued to encourage others in their faith. He once shared with his father that he felt like a modern day Job because of all the complications and pain he faced, but he accepted it without question. Although it was not something he would have chosen, he knew it was God’s plan.

“Clint knew he was going to pass away, and he made me promise that we would be okay and asked us not to go to a dark place,” shared Beverly. “He had a peace about dying and did not fear death. Until his last breath, he was more concerned about his family and the people around him than himself.”

After a three-and-a-half-year battle, Clint Cleckler passed away on July 17, 2015.

“It was not the end result we wanted. We wanted him here on earth, but it was a selfish desire,” said Beverly. “How many people

Although our prayer for complete healing was not answered, so many of our prayers were answered and those blessings branched out. Days, weeks, months and even years after Clint’s passing, people will tell us of the impact he had on their lives.

We just can’t question any of it.”

In memory of Clint, the Wrights created a special memorial garden on the land next to their home in Clanton off Highway 22.

“We had just bought the lot beside our home before he passed, and we wanted a place to show that he was here on this earth,” Jerry said.

Today, family and friends gather regularly in the garden to celebrate Clint’s life.

“Every two weeks we’ve had a get together.

We go out there and have a good time,” Jerry said. “This is not a time to feel sad.

He would want us to have a good time and that’s what we do.”

During his long battle, Clint Clecker once shared a letter he had written on his Facebook page. His illness had rekindled his appreciation for life, especially the small things that people so often take for granted.

In closing his letter, he left readers with this piece of advice.

“I hope you all realize the beauty and life each day has for you. Most importantly, I pray you have a true source of peace or will search for it. Time of trouble will come, and you cannot make it on your own.”

Throughout his journey, Clint held on to Jeremiah 20:9, “But if I say, ‘I will not mention His word or speak anymore in His name,’ His word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in; indeed, I cannot.”

Chloe Killingsworth was overwhelmed with emotion when the judges of the Miss YMCA Pageant announced her as the winner.

“I had already picked out who I thought would win,” recalled Killingsworth. “When they called my name, I burst into tears.”

Though Killingsworth had participated in other pageants, she felt unqualified to win the title of Miss YMCA. When her name was called to receive the crown, it caught the teen by complete surprise.

“I was so excited!” exclaimed Killingsworth.

“I met my mom off-stage, and we both just cried.”

Killingsworth has risen with cheerfulness to the challenge of carrying the crown for her community. Part of the responsibility of Miss YMCA is to represent the organization in community activities. Killingsworth has found it easier to carry out this task with the support she has from family.

“I’m really close with my mom,” Killingsworth said. “She’s been so great with planning everything and helping us get it all together.”

The greatest moments for Killingsworth as Miss YMCA has been serving her community and finding out just “how much the community does for everybody.”

“It has made me a better person,” Killingsworth said. “It has given me a better appreciation for my community.”

Building relationships has been something Killingsworth has treasured as reigning Miss YMCA. She has worked to make sure she’s “always a good role model for everybody,” and her priority has been “always looking out for my [sister queens].”

“I want them to feel comfortable coming to me for help,” stated Killingsworth concerning her sister queens having any needs, problems or questions.

“Serving with my sister queens has been a lot of fun,” Killingsworth recalled. “I’ve gotten to know everybody better.”

Killingsworth’s sister queens include Junior Miss Hannah Strohmer-Hill, Young Miss Kenleigh Smith, Little Miss Kimber Ray and Tiny Miss Emery Blackmon. The queens will reign until July 2019.

Killingsworth laughed at the memories she’s made with her sister queens.

“Spending time with my sister queens is fun. They all have such a great sense of humor. They’re hilarious,” Killingsworth said.

When asked how reigning as Miss YMCA has affected her, Killingsworth spoke of her new respect for her community.

“I have a different perspective of the world,” stated Killingsworth.

Along with her new worldview, Killingsworth has gained a new personal viewpoint as well. She has learned the value of always being the best version of herself that she can be.

“People are always watching, watching your actions.

People look up to you,” said Killingsworth.

For Killingsworth, connecting with her community has been the most meaningful part of reigning as Miss YMCA. The YMCA Queens participated in the Jemison Christmas Tree Lighting.

“It has been great [to] meet new people and meet new families. It has been a lot of fun. I’m already going to miss being queen,” Killingsworth fondly remarked.

One of the events Killingsworth and her queen sisters were able to serve in was raising money to buy Christmas presents for a teen in foster care through a pancake brunch held at Farmhouse Café in Thorsby.

“We had a pajama party and a dance party. It was a lot of fun,” recounted Killingsworth.

Along with her sister queens, Killingsworth has also participated in several parades as Miss YMCA, including the Peach Capital Parade during the county’s celebration of its 150th anniversary.

Her favorite community service activity has been the annual Trick or Treat the Streets in downtown Clanton.

“We dressed up like princesses and gave out a ton of candy. We took a lot of pictures with all the little babies in their costumes. They were so adorable. It was so much fun.”

Killingsworth also enjoyed celebrating the Thorsby little league football team and cheerleading squad.

“We passed out sashes and roses for their homecoming. It was a lot of fun,” said Killingsworth.

Becoming a servant to her community is where Miss YMCA 2018 wants to build a career. A junior at Chilton County High School, Killingsworth is eagerly looking forward to the future.

“I have my sights set on the legal field. Everyone wants to become a nurse or a doctor. I want to do something different. I’m leaning towards becoming a police officer.” peach living 21

Sprouting SEEDS Extension offers farming basics online course

More people than ever want to give farming a try. In the past, people turned to farming family members for help. Today, most people are generations removed from farming.

To help budding farmers get started, Alabama Extension now offers a free online course, Farming Basics. Launched on Sept.

10. The course addresses critical topics in agriculture.

Alabama Extension director Gary Lemme called the course a groundbreaking digital effort.

James Spann to be Chamber Banquet Speaker The Chilton County Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual banquet on Jan. 24 at 6:30 p.m. at the Clanton Performing Arts Center in the Chilton-Clanton campus of Jefferson State Community College.

Chamber Members, potential members and James Spann supporters are invited to attend.

James Spann, Meteorologist with ABC 33/40 will be our Guest Speaker. Several awards will be given including a New Business of the Year, Citizen of the Year, Distinguished Business of the Year, Community Spirit Award, and a Chamber’s Choice Award.

Spann has served as the chief meteorologist for ABC 33/40 for 21 years. In all, James has been a television weather anchor for 39 years.

Spann has received the two highest awards in the nation for a broadcast meteorologist.

One is national “Broadcaster of the Year” by the National Weather Association, which he accepted in September 2012. According to the NWA, James was selected to receive the award “For his passionate dedication to serving the Central Alabama community with critical weather information for over thirty years, especially during the deadly April 27, 2011 tornado outbreak.”

James also was the winner of the American Meteorological Society “Award for Broadcast

Meteorology” in January 2013. The AMS stated he was the winner in part because of “his tireless efforts to advance the public’s awareness of and engagement in the science of meteorology, particularly severe weather forecasting and response.”

James won an Emmy for best television weather anchor in the Southeast U.S. in June 2014, and was elected to the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Silver Circle in 2013. Essentially, it is the ultimate Emmy Award. It represents outstanding achievement spanning at least 25 years in the broadcast industry with a proven record of mentoring and community involvement. And, James received another Emmy for live coverage of the deadly tornado which hit Tuscaloosa on Dec. 16, 2000.

Spann was one of the first weather anchors in the nation to earn “Certified Broadcast Meteorologist” status from the American Meteorological Society.

The University of West Alabama conferred an honorary doctor of laws degree to Spann in 2013.

Spann is in the Theta Tau professional engineering fraternity Alumni Hall of Fame, and the University of Alabama School of Communication Hall of Fame.

Spann is on the inaugural steering committee of The Alliance for Integrative Approaches to Extreme Environmental Events, and on the steering committee of The Verification of the Origins of Rotation in Tornadoes EXperiment-Southeast (VORTEX-SE), which brings together meteorologists, researchers and social scientists to collaborate on a research program looking at the storms and conditions that produce tornadoes in the U.S. Southeast.

James is the Chairman of the Board of Grandview Medical Center, and is a member of the University of Alabama College of Communication and Information Sciences Board of Visitors.
