Q

uilting is a favorite cultural pastime in the South.

Although quilting dates back to ancient Egyptian times, American quilts have made their 4 peach living

own self-important rite of passage into history. During Colonial times, whole cloth pieces were sewn together front and back. In the 1770s, patchwork quilts became common, followed by the use of paper patterns to construct designs onto the quilt during the 1800s.

Local resident Melinda Maddox is an artistic quilter and adds a unique

aesthetic of originality and artistry to her quilt patterns — many times using a photo as a reference to quilt onto the front of a quilt.

“I always have enjoyed painting, but when COVID came it stopped me from going to Senior Connection to paint, so I decided that I would work on my quilting instead,” said Maddox.

Maddox began sewing in junior high school. In high school, she made herself and fellow cheerleaders new CCHS cheerleading uniforms.

“My mother and grandmother both could sew,” said Maddox. “Mother could sew a doll dress without a pattern when I was a little girl, and my grandmother quilted. Her quilts were hand-sewn, and I still have them.”

“I did other things like smock girl’s dresses and make my sons’ pants, but I didn’t start quilting until about four and half years ago,” she said. “I had just retired, and some friends at First Baptist Church encouraged me to come to the quilting group and that’s when quilting started for me.”

In 2020, she entered an African sunset-themed quilt into the Birmingham Quilt Show, and received third place among state competitors. This year, she quilted her German Shepherd, Jake, onto a quilt for the Roy Wood Art Show in Clanton.

“Artistic quilts take more time and are more difficult to make so you really need to be passionate about what design you are going to put on it,” said Maddox. “I chose the African sunset from a picture I took during a mission trip while on a boat and the other from a photo of our family dog.”

Maddox begins each project by creating a piece of paper the exact size that she wants the quilt to be.

Once the large piece of paper is taped together, Maddox uses her drawing skills to hand draw the image onto the paper. She does not draw every detail of the picture, but only the main subject and contrasting colors.

“After that is the fun part,” she said. “I pick out the material that I am going to be using. I take the picture with me and hold up different fabrics to try to get the colors just right. When I made my German Shepherd quilt, I held the fabric up to him and would ask, ‘Jake, is this your color?”

Maddox uses many painting skills while working on her quilts including shading techniques and attention to character details.

“When painting a landscape, the trees and grass may all be green, but they are different shades of green,” she said. “Finding the perfect fabric for a landscape quilt is the same principle. You need different shades of the same color to show dimension. Also, when adding details to a dog or person, there needs to be more defining traits, like the shape of the eyes or their expression, so it doesn’t look like any German Shepherd, it looks like 6 peach living

After Maddox has selected the perfect fabrics, she color codes them similarly to a paint-by-number project. She then glues the pieces in order of dimension and sews them in place.

Maddox uses “free-motion sewing” to complete her project, in which she uses her hand to guide the machine being careful to match her stitch length.

“Once the project is complete, I use a little fabric paint to add detail — such as for eyes, teeth or nose,” she said.

Since Maddox’s retirement four and half years ago from Alabama’s Department of Education, she has used some of her career knowledge to help her while quilting.

“I worked with technology before at my job, and now, I am using it to make quilting patterns,” said

Maddox.

The software design program, Electric Quilt 8, has a library of over 6,700 pre-drawn designs ready to use.

Users may use these designs as they are or edit them.

“I am always working on two or three quilts,” she said. “They can take me anywhere from three months to a year to finish. One grandson wanted one with Hot Wheels and a granddaughter wanted hers with her name on it with doll dresses. I made her dresses from the same material to match. I like to sew in personal details that mean something and make them special.”

Melinda and her husband, Bill, live on the lake. She has two sons, Matt and Bryan, and five grandchildren.

scension St. Vincent’s Chilton will celebrate its fifth anniversary on Oct. 3.

When it opened, the hospital brought emergency care and other medical services that had been unavailable in Chilton County.

“We want … to celebrate what we have done and our associates and all of the hard work that everyone has put in to make this possible, including the Health Care Authority Board for the work that was done in advance of opening the hospital,” hospital administrator Shanon Hamilton said.

Hamilton became the hospital administrator in July 2019, replacing Suzannah Campbell, who had served as administrator since the facility opened.

“I definitely want to thank the community for the support that they have shown Ascension St. Vincent’s Chilton over those five years because without community support and without patients choosing every day to come to this ministry we can’t be successful,” Hamilton said. “They supported us when we first opened and more and more of them are supporting us now.”

This support was shown in tangible ways during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic as community members dropped off meals and snacks for staff members.

“That meant so much to our staff,” Hamilton said.

Health care workers have seen a lot of changes and precautions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Chief Medical Officer Dr. Sean Vanlandingham, who had worked at other St. Vincent’s locations, joined the Chiton County team when the hospital opened.

At first, he was part-time in the emergency department. Later, he became full-time and eventually became the chief medical officer.

“One of the things we have been blessed with is a leadership team that has been 10 peach living

committed to this ministry as well as this community,” Hamilton said. “With a leadership team that has been stable, it’s allowed us to consistently build on the success that we have had in the prior years.”

About 60% of the leadership team live in Chilton County.

“The benefit for those that don’t live in the community, for most of them it is a reverse commute away from the metropolitan areas, like Birmingham or Montgomery,” Hamilton

said. “Most of the associates that work here and the leadership team as well, they appreciate the feel of working in a regional hospital and the sense of community that you get versus working in a large metropolitan hospital.”

Vanlandingham said those that work in the emergency department “really love” the community.

Some have chosen a long commute from the Birmingham area in order to serve Chilton County residents.

Prior to the opening of St. Vincent’s Chilton, community members had to travel to another county for emergency health services.

Vanlandingham said. “We really feel like we are a part of a community that care about each other, who have great values, who have a real positive attitude about the work that they do and who are also really capable and talented … I am proud of the level of care that our doctors have been able to provide.”

This team was able to adjust and adapt well to serve patients during the COVID-19 pandemic, he said.

Since opening, at least 100,000 patients have come to the emergency department. Hamilton said it is a source of pride for the facility that the community “trusted us.”

“I think that speaks volumes for what we do here,” Hamilton said. “Within that 100,000, there have been

thousands of in-patient submissions, where the inpatient care could be provided here in their community rather than having to go somewhere else. That is what we want to build on.”

Patient satisfaction scores the hospital has received show that community members are overall happy with the care they receive.

Hamilton said the hospital has received an overall five-star patient satisfaction score.

“We have some of the highest patient satisfaction scores in the state (with Medicaid and Medicare patients),” Hamilton said.

Hospital administrators and staff have worked to increase the services offered through new programs and partnerships.

has been added. Hamilton said those served with sleep studies have double or tripled from the first few months it was in operation.

“We do a lot of sleep disorder testing that we were probably not doing three years ago,” Hamilton said. “We do about … 30 sleep disorder studies a month.”

In the fall of 2020, the hospital added outpatient occupational therapy to its services.

“We saw a need in the community and decided that that would be an important 14 peach living

service line to review and then open,” Hamilton said.

Outpatient nutritional assessments providing community members the opportunity to talk with a registered dietician has also been added in recent years.

These consultations can help someone know how “to live healthy based on changing their lifestyle around food and eating,” Hamilton said. “You think about patients who are diabetic or pre-diabetic — this is very helpful for them, or maybe someone

wanting to make a long-term commitment to weight loss or healthy eating.”

Such consultation is also helpful for those struggling with an eating disorder.

Expanding services is in the future for the hospital.

“As a result of the pandemic, hospitals around the country are implementing much more telemedicine opportunities, and one of the things St. Vincent’s Chilton will be doing in the next 12 months is adding additional telemedicine services here,” Hamilton said.

These would be services that patients could some to St. Vincent’s Chilton for and see a specialist via telemedicine, rather than having to drive to an outof-county hospital.

Telepsych and telestroke programs are already in place.

“We are also working with the Alabama Department of Public Health and the Joint Commission to be designated as a stroke ready hospital,” Hamilton said.

The hospital expects this to happen in the next year.

Transitional care will continue to be a focus.

Hamilton said the hospital wants to grow this service by making sure community members know “we provide swing bed services here and their loved ones can receive in-patient rehab level services here in the community instead of having to have inpatient rehab at another facility.”

This means that those who have surgery out-ofcounty can come back closer to home to do the rehab and be closer to family.

S

eth Smith would not leave his dad alone. At age 7 or 8, the only thing he wanted was a Honda XR80 — that is, until he sat on one.

“I just kept saying, ‘I want a motorcycle’ because I saw that a bunch of kids older than me had them,” recalls the Maplesville native. “Well, he finally got me one — and he brought it home, and I got on it, and I didn’t like it at all.”

At that moment, Smith’s life could have taken a drastically different path, if not for his mother’s intervention. Afraid that the young boy would regret his decision, she advised him to run outside and tell his dad to keep the bike. So, he did.

“I kept practicing with it, and I finally got to where I could ride it by myself, and it just went from there,” Smith said.

Before long, he had his second motorcycle — a Kawasaki KX65. Around that time, Seth’s dad took him down the road to a track in Billingsley called

Crossbones MX located near Billingsley is his favorite place to race.

Crossbones MX. That’s what eventually led to Smith entering his first race in Autauga County. It was there that he experienced a “no guts, no glory” moment.

“I was just so scared and nervous, and ended up just riding and had a good time,” Smith recounts.

After getting his third motorcycle for Christmas, a Kawasaki KX85, he started entering more and more races, and there was 18 peach living

no stopping him.

Now, at age 18, Smith has owned about 15 different motorcycles and routinely competes in enduro and motocross. For the uninitiated, enduro consists largely of tracks through woodland areas, with manmade obstacles thrown in here and there to keep things interesting, while motocross races are held on open purpose-built dirt tracks with many jumps, hills and turns.

“It’s not a team spor t; it’s all me. I depend on myself, I don’t have to depend on nobody else. If I do bad, it’s on me. If I do good, it’s on me. It just makes me feel calm.”

Smith has competed in the Perry Mountain Motorcycle Club’s 24-hour challenge in Maplesville twice, and has raced in Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma, Florida —“all over the place,” he said.

So far, the biggest stage he has competed on has been Mini O’s held at a track called Gatorback Cycle Park near Gainesville, Florida. It is a national competition held the entire week of Thanksgiving, and Smith participated in 2019 and 2020.

“It’s got all the fast kids, the factory kids, factory riders, everybody fast goes there. Kids all over the world. It’s the big deal,” he said.

While Mini O’s is Smith’s favorite race in which he has competed, he said his favorite track remains Crossbones MX located near Billingsley, one of the places where it all started for him as a motorcyclist.

“The people who own it, we’re really good friends with them, really close,” he said.

It goes without saying

that motorcycles require a significant time investment year-round.

To prepare for a big race, such as Mini O’s, it takes about a month just to get everything ready.

This involves checking the bikes, changing out old parts, changing out tires, cleaning gear and preparing general necessities such as food and clothes.

When asked how many races per year in which he competes, Smith says he does not even keep up with that. He simply says, “It’s a lot.”

But the investment has paid off. Smith has won six Alabama state championships, and even a national championship two years ago at Mill Creek MX in Pell City at the Summer Classic.

He finished in the top 10 in classes at Mini O’s, and currently has more than 500 trophies in his collection.

When asked what he enjoys most about racing, Smith said, “It’s not a team sport; it’s all me. I depend on myself, I don’t have to depend on nobody

else. If I do bad, it’s on me. If I do good, it’s on me. It just makes me feel calm.”

While Smith may be the only one riding during competitions, he is quick to give credit where credit is due — namely his parents, Keith and Donna Smith, for supporting him throughout his journey while pushing him to be

better and better. It is not uncommon for his dad to stay up until 4 a.m. working on bikes.

“Every little second they had, they put into it,” Smith said, also acknowledging his three siblings, Kyle, Derrick and Allison; and best friends, Brandon Brasher and Dawson Jones.

“They took time out of their clock to do stuff for me,” he said.

to spend more time with family. He also graduated from Isabella High School this year. He is currently working in drywall and indicated that he plans to keep racing as a side gig.

“Right now, that’s just something for fun.

It’s just something I’m always still going to do because it’s fun, and I love to do it,” Smith said.

021 Miss Relay For Life Queen Ana Rodriguez believes serving as queen is about more than just wearing a crown.

“Being the 2021 Miss Relay For Life Queen has been an absolute blessing in my life,” Rodriguez said. “When I won, I was so shocked because I felt that the Lord made this to be my plan. I love being able to meet new people and being filled with new experiences and opportunities. Each day that has passed since my crowning has been an absolute blast, and I can’t wait for more to come.”

Rodriguez said she initially decided to participate in the Miss Relay For Life pageant after hearing Sunny Mays and former director Amy Jolley tell her how the pageant was being planned for the 2021 year.

“I decided to participate and was really nervous because of the onstage statement, but once I started speaking about why I relay, I wasn’t nervous anymore. After hearing my name called, I felt like everything had come into place,” Rodriguez said. “I was in absolute shock to say the least. It is the best decision I have ever made.”

she spends time studying for a test or volunteering with different clubs at her school.

On the weekends, she often enjoys spending time playing with her brothers, going to their football games or attending church on Sundays at Lomax Assembly of God, where she volunteers in the nursery.

“I also love to play with my two dogs,” Rodruiguez said. “They are the most dramatic, and also the sweetest dogs you will ever meet.”

Rodriguez said each cancer ribbon she wears on her crown represents what she fights for: a cure for cancer.

“Each diamond on the crown represents who we fight with: those who have been impacted by cancer,” Rodriguez said. “I believe it is very important to know that our biggest and most important duty as queens is not a duty, it is a mission. It is a mission to impact others in a positive way,

and to always brighten someone’s day.”

Since receiving the crown, Rodriguez said she believes she has accomplished more than she could have ever hoped for as queen.

“I had aimed to change one person’s life for the better, but I am so glad that I have been able to do so much more,” Rodriguez said. “I love to see how I get to use my crown to talk to little kids, and those less fortunate than I am, and change their lives for the better with the little words of kindness that I get to share.”

Rodriguez said her role model is her mom, because her mom has been her best friend since day one.

“She has always shown me that a smile is the prettiest thing that you can wear,” Rodriguez said.

“She is always kind to every person she meets and is the most selfless person I know. No matter how bad of a day she is having, she always tries to brighten the days of

others. She is the one who encourages me to always do my best and I thank her each and every day for her help. Especially when I had to take my test on 350 medical terminology words.”

Rodriguez attends Chilton County High School where she is a part of the school’s student government, FFA, FCCLA, NHS, NSHSS, science club and theater. After graduation in 2022, she plans on attending Jefferson State Community College. She

then plans to attend the University of Alabama, where she will pursue a career as a neonatologist at Children’s Hospital.

“I have always loved babies, especially the ones I get to play with at church, and I want to create a positive impact in their and their parent’s lives,” Rodriguez said.

She is the daughter of Elvita Rodriguez, and the sister of JJ and Ky.

•After sampling a complete lot (15 to 20 core samples), mix the sample thoroughly and place the sample in a 1-quart plastic bag.

•Label each sample with an ID (e.g., Back forty, Front lot, Old cotton field).

•Fill out a Hay and Forage Testing Analysis Form on the Soil Testing Lab website or obtain a form from your county Extension office. Attach the form to the sample and mail it to the Auburn University Soil Testing Laboratory.

Harvesting excess forage growth also results in the production of young tender regrowth for later grazing.

Since hay is the primary feed source for livestock during the winter it is viewed as a necessity by the majority of livestock owners and leaves them with two options: bale it or buy it. When considering the economics of hay production, you have to keep in mind that a large percentage of costs are fixed, meaning regardless of other factors, these costs will remain. From strictly an economic perspective, it is extremely difficult for a small producer to justify producing their own hay. However, if a producer is going to spend the time, money and effort to produce hay, they should strive to make it worthwhile focusing on high quality, high yielding, efficiently produced hay.

The single most important producer-controlled factor influencing hay quality is stage of maturity at harvest. This is where many Southern livestock producers can improve hay quality most easily and dramatically.

Stage of maturity at harvest influences the palatability, crude protein content, and the digestible energy level. Cutting hay past the recommended stage results in increased fiber content as well as decreasing palatability and digestibility. Waiting to harvest will generally increase the number of bales produced, but nutritive value decreases. In addition to requiring more fuel, time and labor to store the high fiber hay, animal performance will be depressed. Poor quality hay passes more slowly through the animal digestive system, causing lower intake of low-quality hay, which further reduces animal performance.

Most hay sold in the United States is sold by the bale, based on either color or forage type, with very little concern over nutritive quality. Good quality hay is often sold too cheap, and poor-quality hay is often sold for more than it is worth. Poor quality hay is low in both protein and energy and is usually high in fiber. Observations of hay for leafiness, softness, color, odor, dust and foreign materials are great indicators of quality, however, nutritive value of hay must be measured.

The only way to determine the nutrient value of hay is to have a sample analyzed at a testing facility like Auburn University. To obtain accurate results from such tests, a representative sample must be collected. Once the results of a test are obtained and the quality of a lot of hay is known, that information can be used in effectively formulating diets for livestock.
