A note from the editor Welcome 2021!

Many have longed for this calendar change for months hoping for a fresh start.

However, fresh starts usually require more than just a calendar change. They usually require hard work.

For the Glasscocks, it took a lot of hard work and ingenuity to turn a portion of the second floor of their business into a Joyanna loft apartment.

Love The space is a mix of antique and modern that hits just the right tone. Ann and Tommy shared the details of the transformation and gave us the grand tour for this issue.

No matter how rough 2020 has been there are still some things that you will want to continue in 2021. Cindy and Jerry Huang share about their annual traditions connected to Chinese New Year (which is celebrated in February).

The Huangs also graciously shared a recipe for dumplings traditionally enjoyed as a part of the Chinese New Year.

Popular music group Holy Destiny also talks about their music and the history of the group in this issue.

The Chilton County Extension Office also shares tips on having a successful farm home office in this edition.

Most who attend a church in Chilton County are familiar with Holy Destiny —the Southern Gospel quartet that has traveled the South on and off since the late ’90s.

Although not always a quartet, the group has become a mainstay for not only church singings but also community events, gaining a significant following with their brand of sacred harmonies.

The group faced a major setback in August 2020, however, when bass singer Jeff Lanier of Eclectic, Alabama became sick and was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor. Lanier, who had performed with the group for more than four years, had to stop singing as his condition affected his ability to speak.

“He’s already taken 30 rounds of radiation and chemo. He’s in the process of going back for another MRI,” said Stacey Adams, the group’s tenor and emcee, in early December. “He’s a great bass singer. We never had a bass singer until he came with us.”

Holy Destiny even did a benefit singing for their member and close friend, raising more than $7,000 for medical expenses, as Lanier is self-employed and unable to work.

“We still consider him our bass singer. Who knows what God has in store for that?” said Stacey.

The group also includes Stacey’s brother and fellow group founder, Stanley Adams, who sings baritone, lead singer Rob Manning of Prattville and sound tech Allen Dale.

Rewind back to the ’90s, when the Adams brothers attended Glad Tidings Church of God in Clanton. Stanley sang during church services and soon his brother followed suit. Stacey—the younger brother by about five years— started singing along with the car radio. As teenagers, the boys looked up to Gospel groups The Kingsmen, Gold City Quartet, The Cathedrals and local singers such as Gene Lowery, Gerald Adams, and Percy Scott & The Fishers of Men. “It kind of started from there,” Stacey said.

“Those groups right there really helped us get started. They were very helpful in putting our name out there to other churches.”

“We just got interested in it,” added Stanley.

In the fall of 1997, Holy Destiny officially took off. Stacey said the group’s name came from a line in a song by Gold City Quartet.

“It was just really neat. We just all agreed on it,” he said.

As word of mouth spread, the group traveled

the South, performing continuously except for about a year’s hiatus in the early 2000s. They performed mostly as a trio until Lanier joined in 2016.

Holy Destiny’s career has taken them to notable places— the group has opened for Gold City, Heaven Bound, The McKameys, The Inspirations and others. They sang at the Chilton County Sesquicentennial celebration in Clanton, and even got to perform on the steps of the Alabama Governor’s Mansion.

But few would argue that for Southern Gospel groups, their heartbeat is found in the congregations of local churches.

“There’s probably not a church in Chilton County we haven’t been to. Churches have been very good to us,” said Stacey.

Holy Destiny is known for doing benefit singings for causes like Relay for Life, Lions Club and individuals in need. The style is mostly defined as “Southern Gospel,” but they do a few bluegrass numbers and will throw in some more modern tracks depending on the audience. Stacey has written some original songs, the most requested of which is “In the peach living 5

Palm of His Hand,” which he wrote in about 10 minutes inspired by a scripture passage in Hebrews 13:5.

“I was a teenager when I wrote that, and you know how your teenage years are, just going through times feeling like you don’t need anybody,” he said. “God just kind of got ahold of my heart.”

The group’s overall most requested song is “Midnight Cry.” “It talks about the coming of Christ,” Stanley said.

“People are looking for that hope, you know, in a world that’s hopeless. Our main goal is to share the Gospel through song.

That’s our main objective when we go, to try to see somebody change and to see somebody uplifted that’s hurting, and there are a lot of people hurting.”

Holy Destiny’s first concert as a quartet was at New Covenant Baptist Church, where they sang to a packed house. Group members continue to perform and remain faithful that God still has much in store for them.

The second floor of the business at the corner of Seventh Street and Second Avenue had been untouched for years.

When MorLyn’s needed storage space for seasonal decorations, Ann and Tommy Glasscock decided to create a dedicated area on the second floor.

Creating a stable staircase was required to provide easier access.

This project sparked an idea of converting the space into a living area.

It is something the Glasscocks began seriously thinking almost two years ago.

Tommy Glasscock had started a new job that required commuting to Montgomery and traveling the state. The couple had also started spending more time in their home on Lake Mitchell.

“We moved to the lake full time and then we started talking about this,” Tommy Glasscock said.

Because of the amount of time he would be gone for work, the couple wanted to have something closer to their store.

“He was really making a place for me that when he was gone I wouldn’t be on the lake by myself,” Ann Glasscock said.

The MorLyn’s building was constructed in the late1800s and was formerly Upchurch Drugstore with medical doctor and attorney offices upstairs and an apothecary in the basement. Ann Glasscock’s parents bought the building in the early 1980s.

Several old papers from the attorney offices were still in the building when the Glasscocks began clearing out the second floor. One dates back to 1908.

The basement remains mostly untouched.

Once the stairs were built for the storage area project, further developing the area into useable space was discussed.

Getting the area cleaned out and dealing with a pigeon problem in the ceiling were the most challenging aspects of the project.

Leaving the original ceiling beams exposed was important to Ann. “I wanted to keep it in the era of the building,” Ann Glasscock said. “That is why we have tried to use so many of the original items that were actually in this building.”

Tommy Glasscock completed the majority of the work with friends and family, but they called in a professional for the plumbing.

The old pipes are now the handrailing to the second floor.

The interior doors are original. To maximize space, some of the doors have been converted to sliding doors.

“I would say about 90% of what you see here is of the building,” Tommy Glasscock said.

While many of the glass bottles were in the building, Tommy Glasscock said he also found some of the glasses that say Upchurch on them at an estate sale. “He didn’t throw anything away as he tore it out he kept it all,” Ann Glasscock said.

She said Tommy Glasscock “is a visionary and I’m not” when it came to repurposing the items.

for the bathroom sink. Never used but old light fixtures were rewired to be used in the apartment. The chandeliers in the main room were initially in the Elizabeth Hall building down the street.

Heirloom furniture adds to the charm of the space.

A cabinet that had belonged to Ann Glasscock’s greatgrandmother was upgraded and sets in the kitchen.

“That’s my parent’s first set of china,” Ann Glasscock said of the dishes in the cabinet.

Tommy Glasscock said restoring the cabinet took about 12 hours.

Upgrading the space to the modern era required all new wiring, heating and cooling as well as a washer and dryer hookup.

“He was able to divide up this one big room so that we could have one half be a laundry room and the other half a shower and a separate room for the toilet,” Ann Glasscock said.

The Glasscocks talked to the city building inspector throughout the project to ensure they were in code.

Many of the questions they had about whether they could do something with the space had not been asked of the city before, Tommy Glasscock said.

The renovation took a year and four months.

Upgrading the heating and cooling was a challenge. Ann Glasscock said they had not wanted to have the duct work exposed but this was the only option.

Now that the apartment is livable, the Glasscocks are enjoying the option of walking to downtown restaurants and church.

“Our vision has always been how do we build a greater downtown the more historic district we travel a lot to small towns and have seen a lot of small towns that have been revitalized, so we thought why not be the one to kick start it,” Tommy Glasscock said.

The apartment only accounts for less than half of the entire upstairs space available. Much of it is still old storage. In the areas that have not yet been renovated, one of the doors still bears the name of the doctor who had worked there.

However, now that the Glasscocks have completed their initial ideas, plans have begun for upgrading the rest of the space.

FORTUNE Locals celebrate Chinese New Year traditions

Fireworks and festivities always make ringing in the New Year a joyous occasion. Around the world the holiday is celebrated in the last few hours of December, but Clanton residents Jerry and Cindy Huang and other Chinese immigrants around the world will celebrate the New Year in February.

The origin of Chinese New Year began 16001046 BC, during the Shang Dynasty and is marked each year with a rich wealth of ancient culture and traditions.

Known locally as “Jerry and Cindy,” they were born as Wen Chang and Zhanjiang. “Wen Chang” or Jerry was born on the rural southern island of Hainan, peach living 17

China. After he completed high school, he traveled to the city of Guangdong in order to study refinery and processing at the university.

“At that time, it was difficult to travel,” said Cindy.

“If you were living in the countryside and wanted to travel to the city, you had to have so many food ration cards to show (officials).”

Ration cards were given to all Chinese citizens in order to purchase items needed such as rice or fabric to make clothing.

Jerry met Cindy while studying in Guangdong.

They married in 1987 and had their son Yu in 1988.

In 1989, Jerry immigrated to the United States and enrolled at Auburn University. Cindy and Yu followed in 1991. In 1995, they purchased Ping’s Garden Restaurant and moved to Chilton County. Their daughter, Julie, was born in 1998.

Each year, the Huang family celebrates Chinese New Year with annual traditions that everyone in the family loves. The celebration lasts a total of 16 days (from New Year’s Eve, Feb. 11 to the Lantern Festival, Feb. 26), with the Chinese New Year being the main day for celebrations. Each day is marked around a different focus with different superstitions. On New Year’s Eve, Chinese believe that you should not harbor or talk negatively because you do not want to take anything negative with you into the New Year. On New Year’s Day, there are fireworks and a delightful spread of traditional Chinese foods such as dumplings.

Superstition says that no life should be killed on New Year’s, so recipes that call for meat are prepared the day before. Other superstitions include no sweeping or cleaning, because good luck might be swept away.

day after the new year.

“On New Year’s (Feb. 12), we will celebrate with friends, fireworks and food,” said Jerry. “The next day is marked by visiting the wife’s side of the family and Feb. 14 is cleaning day.”

When visiting family, red money envelopes are given to children and the elderly as gifts.

“It is middle-aged people that are missing out on this game because they are supplying the gifts to everyone else,” said Jerry. “The red envelopes are the best gifts because everyone likes money, whereas sometimes on Christmas you might receive a gift you do not like.”

“Usually, grandparents give the red envelopes to their grandchildren and the parents of the children will give the grandparents an envelope,” said Cindy.

2021 is marked as the Year of the Ox. The ox, known agriculturally for their hard work ethic, being reliable and never seeking praise are often overlooked, but regain recognition from others through the fruits of their labor.

“Each year has a different animal sign that repeats itself every twelve years,” said Cindy. “People born under each sign are supposed to have characteristics of that animal. Some people even try to look for a spouse that is under an animal sign that works well with their own.

The end of the Chinese New Year is celebrated by the lantern festival in which people cast beautifully decorated lanterns into the night sky. Lanterns are almost always red to symbolize good fortune and can be an outward symbol of people letting go of their past self. Riddles are written on the side of each lantern for children to guess the answers.

Red Chinese lanterns and decorations fill the marketplace.

CHINESE NEW YEAR DUMPLINGS Dumplings are the most traditional dish served on New Year’s Day. The custom of serving dumplings comes from the crescent shape of the dumpling resembling the shape of ancient money. Children are given dumplings as a fun, pretend way of giving them “money.”

INGREDIENTS:

DIRECTIONS:

What you’ll need for the dumpling: • 4 cups all-purpose flour • 1 cup water (room temperature)

To make your dumpling pastry, slowly pour the water into the flour. Mix with a pair of chopsticks until thoroughly mixed. Dust your hands with flour and begin to knead the dough for about 10 minutes until smooth. Cover with a damp dish towel for two hours. After two hours, knead for a few minutes and allow the dough to rest again for thirty minutes. While the dough is resting during the thirty minutes time, set a large pot of water on to boil. In a large bowl mix your filling ingredients together. When the ingredients are mixed well they will form a paste, which will help your dumplings stay together. (The pork filling may be made in advance to marinate.)

Prepare a small bowl of water beside your work space to help seal your dumplings. Roll the dough out to the thickness of a tortilla and in 3 inch diameters. Carefully take the small round dumpling circle and place a tablespoon of filling inside. Using both hands crimp the circle in half using your index fingers and thumbs. If the dough begins to dry out in your hand use some of the water to seal the dumpling.

Place the dumplings in the boiling water. When your water gets low, remove the dumplings and add a cup of water to the pot until it returns to boiling. Cindy usually refills her pot of boiling water three times and warns that if you do not remove the dumplings each time they will fall apart.

FARMER’S DESK Tips on Improving your Home Office for Farm Management STORY BY JESSIE BOSWELL, REGIONAL EXTENSION AGENT

The beginning of the year is the perfect time for Chilton County farmers to organize their home office and records for the upcoming months. Spending a little bit of time organizing records now can make business decisions as well as tax time easier. Here are six tips on keeping your records and home office in order.

1. Create an up-to-date Calendar with Important Tasks/Events Physically writing or typing out a list of responsibilities, then prioritizing and scheduling them is all that is needed for an up-to-date calendar and to-do list. Having that tangible list of tasks that you want to complete by a certain date can give you the ability to better schedule your time and work. You can list things that need to be done weekly around the farm or make a list of the bills for the quarter. You essentially want reminders for relevant events or bills and to also provide motivation for the completion of important tasks.

2. Keep Detailed Production and Sales Records These kinds of records are often sheets filled in with handwritten data and used often during harvest.

I encourage producers to scan them into the computer occasionally in order to have another secure copy of them on file. I also encourage producers to take advantage of different software available, from Microsoft Excel to peach living 23

farm management software that can provide analytics and track profitability. The sales and production records are important to keep because they play a large role in any decisions you make regarding your operation. Not only are they used to guide your choices moving forward, but they may need to be audited in the future. It is critical to keep them organized and on file in a secure location.

These records will help guide you in making necessary changes over the years.

3. Implement a Central Inbox in your Home Office I have seen the use of a physical central inbox in many home offices of small business owners and farmers. In a farming 24 peach living

operation, there may only be one or two people organizing the finances of the farm and possibly an accountant. It is important to keep track of all the income and expenses of the farm and the paperwork that accompanies it. The central inbox functions as a place to keep all papers until they can be properly filed or put into a system. Having that single location for incoming papers can prevent loss or misplacement of important information.

4. Keep your Records and Files Organized For someone who runs a farm, it is crucial to keep good records and to have them organized in a way that makes them easy to access. Receipts and bills need to be kept in

an orderly manner. They can be organized alphabetically, by date or by enterprise (if there are different crops or animals). It can be beneficial for the farmer to keep good long-term records written and accessible when planning for the farm.

Why do I need to keep good and detailed records?

It is important to strive for better recordkeeping every year or season. The better records you have, the better decisions you’ll be able to make regarding your operation.

They give you a starting point for reviewing your business and examining what is helping you make a profit or what is preventing you from making a profit. Knowing what is or isn’t working now can assist you in implementing new practices and guiding what practices you already in place.

It is also imperative to keep your personal and business financial records separate. You need to be able to track the income and expenses of your farm in order to truly analyze the profitability.

5. Prioritize Business Planning Time needs to be consistently and regularly spent on business planning for growth and attaining goals. It can be a session set aside daily, weekly or monthly just to think about the operation and how it is getting closer to the goal(s) you have for it. Hopefully you have thought out and written down goals and aspirations for your operation.

They can include both short-and long-term goals, which can encourage the necessary self-discipline needed when running your own farm or business. The time for business planning simply needs to be carved out so it is not overlooked because it so important for the future of your operation.

6. Leave your Home Office Area Ready for the Next Day

This tip may be easier said than done, but it can be such a beneficial habit to create. In the process of organizing and cleaning your home office area after you are done working, you are setting yourself up for success the next time you need to work. Your desk will look much more inviting the next day. Clutter can seem to decrease productivity and add more stress and distraction that no one needs in their workspace. Cleaning up your home office area is something that would only take a few minutes but would greatly benefit your future self.
