Local choir brings together community

— Shemekia Cooper members since they were born. “We started with a youth choir, probably three or four years ago,” Cooper said. Because many of the members are related, the group was invited to sing at get togethers and funerals. “Last year, I was asked to do a women’s choir, so I got a women’s choir together,” Copper said. “This is just the combining of all of the choirs.” The Unity of Verbena sang at Chestnut Creek Heritage Chapel in commemoration of the Alabama Bicentennial earlier this year. The combined choir has also been invited to sing at revivals. While Cooper has never “studied music,” she has a lot of experience leading people in song.
“I have been over youth choirs for years,” Cooper said. Her first experience with singing was at My Father’s Business Ministry in Verbena. “Me and my brother used to stand right there in the front and sing songs there in the church,” Cooper said. “We have always been affiliated with singing. I love to just see everybody, family, friends getting together and giving God the glory.” Her brother is now the pastor at My Father’s Business Ministry and Unity of Verbena frequently practices there. However, the practice space is not always the same. Unity of Verbena practices on an as-needed basis when there is an event coming up. Members usually 5 peach living

work on at least three songs per practice. Of the songs the choir has done, founding member Lenora Price said “Free Worshipper” by Todd Dulaney is her favorite. “We are all free to worship Him, and we all worship in a different way and (to) be sincere about it,” Price said. JaTahja White’s favorite song the choir sings is “How Excellent” because it highlights “how excellent Jesus is and what he’s done for me. JaQue’vyus Hilliard, Shemekia Cooper’s son, has been a member since the beginning and enjoys singing with his cousins and other extended family. He likes the vocals different members showcase through the gospel music. “I like singing tenor and this music it’s just different than all the other gospel songs I listen to,” Hilliard said. His favorite song with the choir is “Salvation and Glory,” which his cousin T.J. sings. “He sings very good — he and his sister ... anytime they lead a song they do very good,” Hilliard said. “You get a different feeling.” When selecting songs, Cooper said she prays about which songs would the best fit for where they will be singing. She said she prays about which of the songs she should select for a particular event. Seven of the youth members left for college this fall, but they will return to Verbena as they can to participate in the choir. Numbers have grown as people see the choir perform and ask about joining. “We are not doing it for a show, we are just doing it to 7 peach living

give God the praise,” Cooper said. Cooper said the dedication of the singers and musicians traveling from wherever they live in the region is what makes the choir possible. Price said she wanted be a part of the choir for the “sense of unity and bringing the community together.” “Even though we worship in separate churches, we come together for that one purpose, which is to give praise and glory to our Savior,” Price said. Price taught many of the members in her high school English class and said she enjoys interacting with them. “It’s kind of helping me come out of my shell a 8 peach living
little bit,” Price said. She also enjoys “being a part of something that is bigger than one church — something that’s bigger than all of us.” “Rhythm, emotion and the meaning behind the words” draws Price to gospel music, she said. White has been a part of the choir for two years. Her enjoyment of singing prompted her to join. While she had sung in the choir at her church, being in Unity of Verbena has given her the opportunity to sing with family. The choir sings at six to seven events per year. Master Gardeners host Christmas Home Tour
The dining room is ready for Christmas.
Story by JOYANNA LOVE The Chilton County Master Gardeners will host its Christmas Home Tour on Dec. 8 from 1-4 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance and can be purchased at the Chilton County Extension Office or from any Master Gardener. Tickets can also be purchased the day of for $20 at any of the participating locations. This year’s tour will highlight historic locations in Verbena. Locations will include the homes of Janine and Chris Speaks, Vivian and Dalvin Johnson, Elaine and Arnold McDaniel and Pat Barfield as well as Verbena United Methodist Church. Locations can be visited in any order. Directions will be on the tickets. “Each of the home owners is excited,” Alice Broome, Master Gardener Christmas Home Tour chair, said. She said the event serves as a fundraiser for the Master Gardener organization with a portion going toward a scholarship for a student in Auburn University’s Agricultural program.
gave Payne her first ornaments in the collection. “We had been friends since second grade,” Payne said. “She passed away with cancer in 2009, so those always go on a metal tree to the side, where you can just see (them).” Her Lennox ornaments are displayed in a similar way. “When I sit down with Christmas ornaments and I unwrap that ball, I remember where I got it who gave it to me,” Payne said. “It’s just memories.” Her festive party started with 15 people and has grown to more than 40. Payne said all of her friends, and some of their friends, are always invited. There have been up to four generations of a family at a time at the party. Her flair for decorating had begun earlier than 16 peach living
her annual party. “I would decorate and everybody says, ‘well, nobody sees it, why don’t you invite us over?’” Payne said. Since the party is always the second Tuesday in December, her decorations have to be in place early. “I try to wait until Thanksgiving afternoon, but it is getting harder and harder the more I put out,” Payne said. Her family and friends do not just show up for the party, many come to help her deck the halls and come back after the party to help her carefully put away the treasures until next year. “I have 35 years worth of Christmas stuff, and I just change up where I put it, put something new with something old,” Payne said. Her collection has grown as some guests to the

Payne’s color scheme stays with the traditional red, green and golds with some unique ornaments, including a hamburger and jellyfish, that have been gifts from her daughter. “I love some of those new colors, but I just have so much that I can’t change,” Payne said. The dining room display is usually home to the Santa and reindeer cookie jars. Payne said she had wanted the Fitz and Floyd pieces for a while but waited for a sale to get them. Since that first purchase, she has expanded trying to get Santa his traditional eight reindeer. The party has an added special air as guests use china and crystal glasses. 17 peach living

Each decoration has special memories for Payne.
Garland is used in a variety of ways each year. “I love the garlands ... of course they are lit, and I add crystal swags and ornaments,” Payne said. One year, she put garland around the window and placed her Lennox teacups in it. “I collect Mark Roberts elves,” Payne said. “Everybody says they are creepy, but if you really look at them, you’ve got to like them. They are a good conversation starter.” Payne often finds creative ways to display decorations she has had for years. “Last year, I had them (Mark Roberts elves) hanging from the chandelier like he is trying to get into the dip, hanging out in the kitchen with his chef ’s hat,” Payne said. Changing up where she puts the elves creates a hideand-seek game of sorts as guests to her home discover ones they may not have seen before. Disney-themed decorations are also a prominent display. Payne said she has a gazebo display that features a dancing Cinderella and Prince Charming. “That’s the whole point of Christmas to see the wonder on the little children’s faces when they walk in the door and their eyes light up and they run to the tree,” Payne said. Adults and children alike can enjoy the wonder of the season in December at the Payne house.

On the night of the pageant, Desmond was “very excited” when she was announced as the winner. “I had not competed in a pageant in a year and a half and talking onstage had me a little nervous,” Desmond said. “I was excited to hear I had won, so that I could participate in all of the (American) Cancer Society fundraisers.” Her onstage presentation dealt with explaining what the American Cancer Society was, how it got started and where the money goes. During her reign, Desmond has visited cancer patients and participated in raising funds for childhood cancer research. “It’s not about the crown on your head ... it is about raising money for the people and for research,” Desmond said.

She said she has enjoyed the opportunity to give back. “Seeing all the little girls look up to me cause I have a crown, and I like them coming up and asking me questions about it,” Desmond said. During events, Desmond tells people about the American Cancer Society and what it does to raise money to “help cancer patients and their families.” “If a child needs a wig and they can’t afford it, then the American Cancer Society will help them pay for that wig or any other treatments that they need,” Desmond said. She said she helps those she meets know what they are donating to, if they donate to Relay For Life. Desmond is a senior at Chilton County High School. She plans on attending Jefferson State Community College and becoming a vet technician. “For as long as I can remember, I have

always been interested in helping animals,” Desmond said. “I have always just brought them in and nursed them back to health.” Desmond said the experience has “shown me how thankful I am that all of my family is healthy — and I’m healthy, and I don’t have to go through all of this. I’ve learned to be extra nice toward people because you never know what people are going through. You always help people no matter what, and that’s something that will always stick with me.” She said the experience has also shown her just how many people are dealing with cancer. Desmond said she was grateful to everyone who made the pageant and Relay For Life possible. The remaining time of her reign will include visiting cancer patients at Hope Lodge again, local Christmas events and a cancer survivor’s dinner. PUMPKIN CHEESE PIE Courtesy of USDA Food and Nutrition Service Makes: 16 servings A great option for cheesecake lovers. Less fat and saturated fat than a standard cheesecake but all the flavor. Ingredients 8 ounces cream cheese, reduced fat 8 ounces cream cheese, non-fat 2 egg 4 egg whites 1 1/4 cups sugar 1 can pumpkin (29 ounces) 1 teaspoon ginger 1 tablespoon cinnamon 2 graham cracker pie crusts (9 inch) Directions 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. 2. Place the cream cheese, eggs and sugar in a large mixing bowl. Mix at medium speed until creamed. Add the remaining ingredients and mix at medium speed until ingredients are well mixed. 3. Spoon the mixture evenly in each pie crust and place both in the oven for approximately 50 minutes until pies look firm in the middle.

Ingredients 1 head of lettuce (about 10 cups) 2 apples (medium, sliced) 1/2 cup walnuts (chopped) 1 cup dried cranberries 1/2 cup green onion (sliced) 3/4 cup vinaigrette dressing Directions 1. Toss lettuce, apples, walnuts, cranberries, and onions in a large bowl. 2. Add dressing; toss to coat. Serve immediately. Note: To prepare ahead, add apples and dressing just before serving. MAPLE SWEET POTATOES Courtesy of USDA Food and Nutrition Service Makes: 2 servings Sweet potatoes, maple syrup, orange juice, and yogurt are a winning combination in this easy dish that can be made in the microwave. Ingredients 2 sweet potatoes (large) 2 tablespoons yogurt, non-fat 1 tablespoon maple syrup 1/16 cup orange juice (1 Tablespoon) Directions 1. Prick potato skins with a fork. Microwave on high for 3 to 4 minutes until soft and easily pierced with a knife. 2. Scoop out the pulp into a medium bowl. Mash the pulp and stir in the yogurt, maple syrup, and orange juice. Transfer to a microwave safe serving bowl and microwave for 1 to 2 minutes to heat through.
