When coming up with a name for their band, Walon Smith and Sarah Looney drew from two sources of inspiration — Dr. Seuss and the band’s home state of Alabama.

Smith of Clanton and Looney of Montgomery are the core singer-songwriter

duo of Cotton Bird, whose genre-defying music is as hard to define as its name. And that’s the way they like it.

The “bird” half of the name comes from a character in the Dr. Seuss book, “Happy Birthday To You!” known as the Great Birthday Bird.

“We both liked that name,” Looney recalled. “Walon said, ‘Well, I really liked ‘bird.’ So, we kept bird, and I came up with cotton because of our strong ties to Alabama, and I think cotton is a strong image. Plus, all the good names are already taken.”

Smith and Looney share lead vocal duties, as well as backup and harmony parts. Looney plays percussion including snare drum, cymbals and tambourine, in addition to keyboards and guitar. Smith plays guitar, bass, drums and keyboards. Drummer Leif Bondarenko and bass player Eric Onimus of Birmingham, among others, round out the lineup.

The music is an eclectic blend of originals and covers that draw from a wide range of influences and styles. In other words, to really get an idea of what the band sounds

like, the best way is to just attend a show.

Smith grew up as a fan of “The Jackson 5” and “The Beatles,” both immensely popular and influential acts, but not exactly the kind of music his peers were listening to. This became more noticeable in his high school years.

“The music that inspired me to learn to play guitar was ‘The Beatles,’ and after that I would say Bob Dylan, Frank Sinatra, Neil Young and Tom Petty. Those are the big ones,” he said.

Looney is originally from Lake Charles, Louisiana.

She said the first cassette tape she ever bought was of ’60s girl groups. She also named Lucinda Williams as an influence, and one that’s a lot closer to home: her dad.

“My dad [Bobby Looney] played guitar for me and my siblings growing up my

When asked about their style, Smith said they try not to define it.

“We have not found [a genre] that satisfies us, but we have influences, and some of those influences are rock and roll, older rock and roll, ’60s and ’70s rock and roll and even ’50s rock and roll,” he said.

Looney added: “A lot of artists that I think of pop as much as rock are influences of mine. I think we both have a really wide variety of influences. To say that we are a rock and roll band probably would not be accurate.”

Looney attempted to define the band as the following: “We are artists, we are writers, we are audiophiles, we are veteran gig musicians who are passionate about being in a band making our own music the way we want.

And we want it to sound good.”

Looney is a classically trained vocalist with a background in musical theater.

While this experience is no doubt valuable to her career, she explained that there was quite a transition to singing in Cotton Bird.

“I’ve had to teach myself how to sing pop,” she said. “It’s completely different.”

The group formed in 2012 and started out as a duo. Smith and Looney met at a gig in Montgomery at the 1048 Jazz & Blues Club, where he was playing with another band. Smith had been playing gigs since graduating from college in 1987.

“It just kind of evolved naturally,” Smith said. “We found out we had common ground musically. And when we sang

together it sounded good, and we found out we could write songs together, collaborate on that. We both seemed to have enough of a shared vision that we felt like we could pursue it more seriously.”

Cotton Bird is working on its debut album, yet to be named. The group indicated the songs represent different stories of life experiences.

Looney said some of the songs are very personal for her, naming two examples, “Maybe I” and “Alabama.” “‘Maybe I’ was written from a situation in my life where I was sort of replacing these other women, one was in a job and one was in a friendship,” she said. “And in both cases I felt that I could not live up to the woman that had been there before me, so ‘Maybe I’ was an exploration of what I could add to these explanations. It’s sort of like you’re in competition with a memory, and people love to romanticize memories.”

“Alabama” is about coming to terms with memories of calling Alabama home, drawn from a collection of experiences living in the state.

Smith described his song lyrics as “kind of impressionistic.”

“I know what I mean by my lyrics, but I can’t necessarily tell you what it means, and so that probably leaves it open to interpretation to people who can interpret it in different ways. That’s OK,” he said.

The debut album was recorded at Smith’s home studio in Chilton County and is a collection of songs in various stages of completion. The band is hoping to release it sometime in 2019.

Smith said the band’s audience comprises a wide range of ages, from senior citizens to the middle-aged, college-aged, 20-somethings and even children.

“We’re trying to be as versatile as we can, so we can play as many gigs as possible and reach as many people as possible,” he said.

Cotton Bird performed at the Chilton County Fall Supper at the Chilton County Chamber of Commerce and Chilton County’s 150th (Sesquicentennial) anniversary Goose Pond Gala event in October.

Zoey Collum is 2018 Miss Peach STORY BY JOYANNA LOVE PHOTOS CONTRIBUTED 10 peach living

Zoey Collum was no stranger to the Clanton Lions Club’s Peach Pageant when she signed up for the 2018 Miss event.

“I had always dreamed of being Miss Peach,” Collum said.

Yet, she thought Miss Peach may be a dream unrealized.

“I had never won peach queen, and I didn’t think I would,” Collum said.

Despite participating when she was younger, Collum had never won a peach queen title. She had been first runner up for Young Miss twice.

2018 was her first year competing for the Miss title.

Hearing her name announced as the queen came as a surprise.

Collum had admired previous Miss Peach Queens and finds it surreal sometimes that she now holds the title.

She said the experience thus far has been “fun and exciting and crazy.”

Her favorite activity was delivering peaches to Gov. Kay Ivey and getting to talk to her. Collum said she also enjoyed getting to meet Cam Ward at another event.

Collum and the other Peach Queens have also participated in Eli Go for Gold, where the Lions Club made a donation to the Eli Jackson Foundation, and the Sesquicentennial parade.

Collum also spoke to the Chilton County Chamber of Commerce about the history of the Peach Pageant.

She is looking forward to the upcoming parades and the Peanut Festival in Dothan.

Collum had wanted to be Miss Peach while she would still be in high school rather than having to travel back from college for events.

She has been accepted to Auburn University, where she plans on being a pre-med major. Her career goal is to be a psychiatrist.

“I really enjoy helping others,” Collum said.

She had thought about being a doctor, but wanted to be able to talk to people and help them with their problem.

These two come together in the field of psychiatry.

The $2,500 in scholarships Collum won during the Peach Pageant will help pay her tuition. In addition to $2,000 for being Miss Peach, Collum also received $500 for the 2018 Clanton Lions Club Outstanding Achievement Scholarship based on her GPA. The variety of scholarships available through the pageant was a major reason Collum wanted to compete at the Miss level. During her reign, Collum hopes to continue the scholarship started by the 2017 peach queens. Funds were raised through a fashion show prior to the Peach Festival.

During the pageant, Collum was nervous about the onstage question.

However, she said Miss Peach really does need to be able to answer questions about the county, so it makes sense.

Her question was “If you were chosen as Miss Peach Queen, what would you do to promote the pageant and encourage participation from other girls in this county?”

Her answer was “If given the opportunity to be Miss Peach, I would promote and encourage participation through additional scholarship opportunities; academic excellence is a great incentive. I would also love to promote the reason why we have the Lions Club is for service. As Miss Peach, I would be a representative of the Lions Club through my service.”

As a part of the pageant, Collum received a packet of information about the peach industry and the county.

“I’m glad I got that even if I didn’t win,” Collum said, commenting that she learned a lot about the county from the information.

For the younger peach queens, Collum wants to encourage them to “stay close to God, be positive and remember people are watching them, too.”

She said staying close to God is what has helped her stay calm while balancing being Miss Peach and her senior year.

With every new season, comes new styles and preferences. These often include a new hair style, color or cut.

At LeCroy Career Technical Center, high school juniors and seniors from throughout the county learn a variety of hair and nail styles in a two-year program.

The various styles and techniques are practiced on mannequins before the students move on to helping customers and doing each other’s hair and nails.

Through the school’s simulated workforce, students learn all aspects of working in a salon. Students are divided into two salons per class, each with a student manager and assistant manager.

This year, the salons for the afternoon class are Beauty from Ashes with Madison Easterling as manager and Tangles with Kailey Cordes as manager.

“They start out with sanitation, sterilization and they go all the way up to the cosmetology board requirements, such as getting ready for state testing,” instructor Tracey Minor said.

Coloring hair is the favorite part for many of the students. Having three colors, especially reds, blondes and browns, was popular in the fall.

During winter, darker colors tend to be more popular hair color choices.

The students would also like purple and pink, if they could have them and still be in line with school dress code, Minor said.

However, adding a section of fake pink hair for breast cancer awareness month in October is popular.

“I love color. That’s the best part of it,’’ Taylor Connell said.

Her favorite style to do is the ombre. In this style, the top portion of hair is one color and transitions to a different color on the bottom portion.

Connell had this hairstyle during the interview.

“It’s just different,” Connell said. “You don’t see many people with it ... Its creative.”

Blonde is a popular color for the bottom color in this hairstyle. But, Connell said she would like to try some wilder combinations with her own hair.

“I like to try everything,” Connell said.

Connell, who is in her second year in the program, said she wanted to be in cosmetology because of her aunt.

Connell’s recipe for success in the program is “getting creative with it and know you can do it.”

“It’s a great program,” Connell said. “It really is. You learn so much from it.”

Prior to being accepted to the program, Christina Carter had taught herself the foil technique of coloring hair and would do her mom’s hair.

Just what technique the hairstylist-in-training uses when coloring depends on what the customer wants.

“I would rather foil than put a cap on because it gets down to the roots, and it’s not gapy,” Carter said.

However, she commented that some people prefer having gaps.

“Ever since I was a kid, I wanted to do hair,” Carter, who is in her first year in the program, said.

She said she has learned that it is worth paying more to use salon-quality products.

Red, blonde and caramel highlights were the customer’s choice one day this semester.

Students divided the customer’s hair into sections for each color before beginning the coloring process using the foil technique.

“I like doing haircuts more than I do color because I have had more practice with it,” Easterling said. “I do a lot of men’s haircuts.”

A popular haircut this semester for men has been the fade — where the side is super short and the hair is longer on the top.

Sectioning the hair before starting is important.

Confidence is also crucial to a good haircut, Easterling said.

“If you are nervous about it, you are more likely to mess up,” Easterling said.

Easterling, who is in her second year in the program, said “making people feel pretty all the time” is why she wanted to be in cosmetology.

Perms have also made a comeback in popularity.

One version of this style students learn is “the helicopter perm” because of how the curlers and placeholders look during the process. Estrella Gutierrez, who is in her first year in the program, said the style keeps the person’s hair straight toward the top of the head and the rest curly.

The process takes 25 to 30 minutes.

Gutierrez said straight back perms and piggyback (layered) perms were more popular.

Amiiya Williams, who is in her first year in the program, said doing hairstyles for customers is fun.

Williams said she became interested in joining the program after she started “doing hair on the weekends.”

Gutierrez has enjoyed “learning the new techniques of ... perms, learning how to do manicures and stuff like that.”

Gutierrez said she likes using bright colors, glitter and diamond crystals when doing nails.

The program does have some loyal customers that help the students experience what working in a salon is really like. Minor said one woman has been coming since she was in the program.

“She still comes and gets perms twice a year,” Minor said.

Students will accrue up to 840 hours during the program.

The additional required hours for licensure must be completed at the college/ cosmetology school level before being qualified to take the state licensure exam.

Easterling plans to attend Paul Mitchell Schools cosmetology program or Aveda Institute to finish her hours for licensure. Connell also said she is considering Aveda.

“I would like to own my own salon,” Easterling said. “I am going to Jeff State after I finish cosmetology school to get my business degree.”

Many of the students share Easterlings desire to own their own salon one day.

As a part of LeCroy’s program students have the opportunity to tour several colleges.

Students also attend a two-day hair show in Birmingham each year.

“They enjoy that,” Minor said. “There are people there from all over the world doing anything from hair coloring to haircuts, you name it.”

Community service is also important to the LeCroy students. Minor said the students go to assisted living facilities to do female residents hair, makeup and nails.

“They love to do stuff like that,” Minor said.

The residents then had a fashion show that the students judged.

Customer service is a major component of the program.

Minor said this includes greeting customers at the door, introducing themselves, asking the customer what they would like and taking them to the chair to start.

HEALTHY Tailgating Extension System shares tips

AUBURN, Ala. – Football season is in full swing.

Thousands of fans flock to stadiums every Saturday to cheer on their favorite college teams and spend the day tailgating.

Traditionally, tailgating means high caloric foods, often fried and loaded with cheese. These can actually make you sluggish and tired. peach living 21

Many people want to enjoy tailgating while still maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Dr. Andrea Morris, a health and nutrition specialist with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, has some great advice.

HAVE A TAILGATE GAME PLAN

There are a few steps to take to enjoy tailgate food without adding the typical calories. Morris said to first have a game plan before tailgating begins. Plan to eat prior to kickoff. Morris said, “by doing this, everyone can enjoy their meal and great conversation.”

If you are TV tailgating, eat prior to kickoff.

It can help you avoid consuming too many calories by snacking while watching the game.

If you plan on drinking alcoholic beverages or soft drinks at the tailgate, Morris said to alternate between those beverages and water throughout the day.

“It will keep you hydrated and cut out some calories,” Morris added.

Alcohol does not quench thirst.

HEALTHY SNACKS

Always have healthy snacking options such as fruits and vegetables, and include

physical activity when possible. Morris suggested fun games like frisbee, throwing a football or playing kickball to add even more fun.

“You can also create a scavenger hunt to encourage your group to get up and walk around the tailgating area,” she said.

For those who think eating healthy means sacrificing taste, Morris said simply baking or grilling foods such as chicken wings is a healthy alternative to frying. Salsa and guacamole are always crowd pleasers. These foods can take the place of heavier, cheesefilled dips.

Some of Morris’ favorite go-to snacks include apple slices with peanut butter, cottage cheese and pineapples, a snack mix of peanuts and almonds and yogurt covered cranberries.

THINK FOOD SAFETY

Another important aspect of tailgating is food safety. Morris has tips to remember while eating outside.

“Don’t leave food sitting off the grill or out of the cooler for more than two hours,” she said. “If temperatures are 90 degrees or

higher, don’t leave food out for more than one hour.”

She also advised using coolers filled with ice packs or ice to keep perishable food items below 40 degrees.

Cook meats to a safe internal temperature.

“Ground beef or pork should be cooked to 160 degrees, poultry to 165 degrees and steaks, chops, roast, fresh pork and ham, 145 degrees,” Morris said.

Remember to keep raw foods from separate ready-to-eat foods.

KEEP HANDS CLEAN

Lastly, when it comes to food safety it’s always important to keep your hands clean.

Morris advised tailgaters to bring extra water with soap and paper towels, hand sanitizer or antibacterial wipes.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle during football season can be accomplished by following Morris’ tips. Planning to eat before the game, choosing healthy food and drink choices and remembering food safety tips will help make an enjoyable tailgate season.

Whether as a meal or as part of a party spread, chili has long been a colder weather favorite.

Debbie Housner makes it about once a month throughout the colder months.

Her recipe was the crowd favorite and the first-place winner in the 2018 Senior Connection Chili Cook Off. Housner said this was her first year to be a part of the event.

“I never thought I would win it,” Housner said. “There were several folks that were there.”

She had decided to enter at the encouragement of her husband Forest and the Master Gardeners.

Her recipe was modified from one she found in “Healthy Recipes from State Farm Agents” while working for the insurance company.

The initial version called for turkey.

Housner changed it to ground beef and added a frozen recipe starter mixture of chopped onions, celery, parsley and peppers.

“I brown my meat with that recipe starter,” Housner said. “... then I add beef consomme, tomato soup, kidney beans and two cans of the Hunt’s diced tomatoes.”

CHILI CON CARNE

BY DEBBIE HOUSNER (Inspired by “Healthy Recipes from State Farm Agents.”)

INGREDIENTS:

DIRECTIONS:

• 1 1/2 pounds ground beef • Frozen recipe mix of chopped onions, celery, parsley and peppers • 2 cans diced tomatoes • 1 can tomato soup • beef consomme • 1 16-ounce can red kidney beans • 2 garlic gloves, minced • 2 teaspoons salt • 2 teaspoons oregano • 2 teaspoons chili powder or ground cumin • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper • 1 bay leaf

Combine first two ingredients in a Dutch oven or large saucepan.

Brown meat. Drain off fat. Add all additional ingredients. Stir to blend.

Cover and simmer 1 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally. Remove bay leaf. Serve with your choice of crackers, cheese and sour cream.

Cornbread is a good side for Debbie Housner’s chili.

She then adds seasonings, including garlic, salt, oregano, chili powder, crushed red pepper and a bay leaf.

“I like this recipe because it is simple,” Housner said.

“I love meaty, juicy chili, and that’s what it is.”

She said the recipe can really be changed to fit what a cook has on hand.

The basic recipe is not too spicy.

“It just has a nice warm feeling,” Housner said. “It feels like home.”

Before serving the chili, the bay leaf should be removed.

Housner said the chili also freezes really well, so it can be made in large batches and saved for later.

She serves her chili with cornbread on the side and topped with a four Mexican cheese blend and sour cream.

Sometimes she also has Hershey Kisses on hand.

“I did serve this chili at the cook off with a Kiss,” Housner said. “Everybody wanted to know what my secret ingredient is — it’s love. If you don’t love the person you are serving it for, it’s not going to taste good.

Anybody can make this recipe, but in order to make it taste good, you have to love what you’re doing.”

Originally from Michigan, Housner was influenced in her love of cooking by her mom, who often had people over for a meal.

She moved to Alabama with her husband after their first grandchild was born in 2010.

At the cook off, event attendees traded in the provided sample size serving dishes for coffee cups to enjoy more of it.

“I had repeats that just kept coming back,” Housner said. “I made it in my big seven-quart Crock-pot. I doubled the recipe, and it was gone.”

Chilton County Chamber lays the groundwork for new student ambassador program The Chilton County Chamber of Commerce is introducing an Ambassador Program which will give young men and women the opportunity to be involved with the business community by being exposed to programs directed by the Chilton County Chamber of Commerce. They will assist with functions such as our Annual Chamber Banquet, Fall Supper, Trick or Treat the Streets, Peach Jam and many others.

Participants will meet business leaders from throughout the state, attend seminars and represent Chilton County and the Chilton County Chamber of Commerce at Legislative Day in Montgomery. Those selected will be expected to maintain high standards of personal ethics. They will be leaders among their peers and in our community. This program shall be administered by the staff of the Chilton County Chamber of Commerce with the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors having oversight responsibilities.

Policy and Procedure Forms and Student Applications have been delivered to all schools in Chilton County and the program will get underway in January 2019. A total of 15 students will be chosen for the

Crop photo here program. The program will be open to male and female students who are rising sophomores, juniors or seniors attending schools in Chilton County. They must have a cumulative grade point average of at least an 85, certified in writing by the applicant’s principal or guidance counselor along with a recommendation from his or her school.

Applications and instructions can be picked up at the school office or the Chamber of Commerce office located at 500 5th Avenue North, Clanton.

Applications are due on Nov. 27, and an interview will take place on Dec. 11, 2018. Those selected will be notified and will be recognized at our annual Chamber Banquet on Jan. 24, 2019.

COMMUNITY HAPPENINGS Every Monday Clanton First United Methodist Church, at 207 Eighth Street North in Clanton, hosts Celebrate Recovery, a Christ-centered 12 step program to address any hurt, habit or hangup.

Meetings are every Monday evening at 5:45 p.m. beginning with a free dinner and followed by a large-group meeting at 6:30 p.m. Men’s and women’s small groups meet at 7:30 p.m.

Celebration Place, a pre-covery program for children ages 5-13, meets at the same time and teaches children at an early age how to deal with hurts, habits and hangups that happen in their lives. For more information, please contact the church office at 755-0490.
