Upcoming Events March Luncheon Secretary of State John Merrill will be the features speaker at the meeting on March 12 at the Jemison City Hall Complex at noon.

Merrill is the son of Mary Merrill and the late Judge Horace Merrill of Heflin, Alabama in Cleburne County. Merrill has had an extensive career in economic development: working for the Tuscaloosa County Industrial Development Board where he assisted in the recruitment of MercedesBenz, director of business development for the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama, director of community relations and community education for the Tuscaloosa County Board of Education and served as business development officer for 1st Federal Bank in Tuscaloosa.

In 2010, he was elected to represent the people of District 62 in the State House of Representatives with 87 percent of the vote, which was the highest percentage garnered by a candidate in

any contested House race that year. He served as the secretary/treasurer of the House Republican Caucus and was a member of the powerful Rules Committee, Economic Development and Tourism, and Constitution, Campaigns, and Elections Committees.

On Nov. 4, 2014, he was elected as Alabama's Secretary of State with 65 percent of the vote, winning in 53 of Alabama's 67 counties. He was inaugurated as Alabama's 53rd Secretary of State on January 19, 2015. Merrill has been awarded numerous recognitions throughout his career on a state and national level. He has traveled internationally and represented our great state and nation in Canada, China, Germany, Russia and Taiwan.

Merrill has been married to the former Cindy Benford for 33 years and they have two grown children.

Jeremy Arthur, Chamber of Commerce Association of Alabama president and CEO, will be the featured speaker at the April 16 meeting at Clanton First United Methodist Church at noon.

CCAA is a 120 plus member organization representing chambers of commerce throughout Alabama. Through this office, Arthur serves as the chief administrative executive ultimately responsible for the total operations of the association. He is responsible for directing the efforts of a joint agreement known as The Partnership with the Business Council of Alabama. The Partnership represents the interest of some one million working

Alabamians through its member companies and local chambers of commerce.

Prior to joining the Chamber of Commerce Association of Alabama, he served at the president of the Prattville Area Chamber of Commerce.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science.

His graduate studies include a Master of Public Administration from Auburn University, with a Minor in Economic Development. He is currently a Doctoral Candidate at Auburn University in Public Administration and Public Policy.

He is originally from Decatur, and now calls Prattville, Alabama home.

Chamber attends EXPO

The Chilton County Chamber of Commerce staff and ambassadors attended the Alabama Advantage Expo last month in Orange Beach, Alabama. The expo under the direction of ADECA, the Alabama Department of Economic and

Community Affairs, is held annually at the Caribe Resort to showcase Alabama to the “Snow Birds,” as they are often referred, or primarily retirees that make their home for several months on Alabama’s Gulf Coast.

Exhibitors set up booths throughout

the resort giving out information about their communities, their businesses and our way of life in the South.

Below you will get a glimpse at how we went about welcoming those retirees to Chilton County: Welcome to Chilton County!

Chilton County is known for its world famous ‘Chilton County Peaches’ and is often referred to as the peach capital of the South.

Centrally located along I-65, it is home to award winning schools, the state of the art Chilton St. Vincent’s Hospital, as well as Jefferson State Community College Chilton campus.

Chilton County sits alongside the Coosa River with 7.9 square miles of water, Lay Lake and Lake Mitchell offer wonderful outdoor recreation amenities. The cities and towns in Chilton County are friendly and family oriented. Chilton County is a great place to live, work and play!
